This project is not only easy to make but lets you bring in a mix of tradition and modern color to your home. It’s a fun and creative way to bring a personal touch to your autumn decorating, making it both unique and beautiful!

As the crisp air of fall starts to settle in, I always find myself drawn to projects that bring a bit of that autumn warmth indoors. This DIY Color Wrapped Wheat project is a perfect way to do just that. It’s a simple, yet striking way to add a pop of color to your seasonal decor while still keeping that classic fall feel we all love.
I used mine in a bunch as a centerpiece on my dining room table. It’s beautiful, right? A touch of tradition with a modern and colorful twist. I think these would coordinate beautifully with vintage fall decor too!

I also shortened a few of the bunches to decorate place settings. It’s a pretty way to tie everything together. These could even double as place cards by attaching a tag to them with your guest’s name. And, if you’re willing to give them up, your guests could take them home as a little favor.
It only takes a few basic supplies and a little bit of time. Let’s dive into how you can create this beautiful and easy fall decor piece.

- One of the best things about this project is how easily you can tailor it to your taste. With endless color combinations to choose from, you can match your wrapped wheat to any fall palette, making it a perfect fit for any home.
- This project is incredibly easy and meditative. The repetitive motion of wrapping the embroidery floss around the wheat stalks can be soothing, providing a small escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
- Traditional fall decor often leans towards earthy tones, but this project gives you the chance to infuse a splash of unexpected color into your space. It’s a great way to refresh your seasonal decor without much effort.
- Whether you’re using it as a centerpiece, to adorn place settings, or some other decorative touch, this color-wrapped wheat can be displayed in so many ways. It’s a fun and versatile addition to your fall decorations that can easily be adjusted to fit different spaces in your home.

Materials
For this project, you only need a few things. Here’s what to pick up:
- Dried Wheat Stalks: These are the foundation of your project. You’ll want to choose stalks that are sturdy and uniform in size to ensure a consistent look.
- Embroidery Floss: This is where the color comes in! Pick any shades that complement your fall decor. The floss wraps easily around the wheat and adds that vibrant touch to your project.
- Scissors: A good pair of sharp scissors is essential for trimming both the wheat stalks and the embroidery floss to your desired length, ensuring clean and precise cuts.

- You will want to start off with a few stalks of wheat. I prefer sticking with an odd number so I made some with five stalks and some with seven stalks.

- Bunch the wheat together near the top, wrap around once with the embroidery floss, and tie a knot to hold everything in place.
- Then, start to wrap the embroidery floss around the stalks. I found it easiest to spin the wheat to wrap the floss rather than spinning my hand around the wheat.

- Cover about 2 inches of the stalks with the floss and then tie another knot to hold everything in place.
That’s it!
Whether you’re admiring it as the centerpiece of your dining table or giving it as a thoughtful handmade gift, it’s sure to add a bit of personal charm to your fall celebrations.

Project Variations
Love this idea and looking for unique ways to mix it up? Then you’ll love some of these project variations to create a new or different look.
- Metallic Floss for a Glam Look: If you’re aiming for a more elegant or festive vibe, try using metallic embroidery floss. Gold, silver, or copper threads can add a touch of shimmer that’s perfect for holiday decor or a more sophisticated fall display.
- Natural Twine for a Rustic Feel: For a more rustic or farmhouse-style look, swap out the colorful floss for natural jute or twine. This gives the wheat stalks a more subdued, earthy appearance that pairs well with other natural elements in your home.
- Incorporate Beads or Charms: To take your wrapped wheat to the next level, consider adding small beads or charms as you wrap the floss. This can create a more intricate and detailed look, adding another layer of texture and interest to your decor.
- Dye the Wheat Stalks: For a bold and unique approach, try dyeing the wheat stalks themselves before wrapping them. You can use fabric dye in any color you like to create a striking contrast between the dyed wheat and the embroidery floss.
- Mix with Fresh Greenery: Combine your wrapped wheat stalks with fresh or faux greenery for a mixed-texture arrangement. This variation works especially well if you want to blend the warmth of fall with the freshness of other seasons, making your decor more versatile.

Display Ideas
- Centerpiece: Bundle several stalks together and place them in a clear or neutral-colored vase for a vibrant fall centerpiece. The mix of natural wheat and colorful wrapping makes it an eye-catching addition to your dining table or kitchen island.
- Mantel Arrangement: Create a display on your mantel by placing a few smaller bunches in various-sized vases or jars. Mix in candles, pumpkins, or other fall decor to add layers and dimension, making your mantel a focal point for the season.
- Place Settings: For a personal touch, tuck a few wrapped wheat stalks into napkin rings or tie them with a ribbon and place them on each plate for a thoughtful and charming addition to your fall tablescape.
- Wreath Accent: Incorporate your color-wrapped wheat stalks into a seasonal wreath. Whether you’re working with dried flowers or greenery, these stalks add a fresh and unexpected twist to a classic fall wreath.
- Shelf or Console Display: Lean your wrapped wheat bunches inside a small basket or vintage container on a shelf, sideboard, or entryway console. Pair them with other fall favorites like candles or mini gourds for a cohesive autumn look.
- Flower Arrangement: Add your wrapped wheat to a fresh or dried flower arrangement. The wrapped stalks create beautiful texture and color contrast, making them a unique addition to bouquets or seasonal floral displays.
- Gift Wrapping: For a creative twist on gift wrapping, tie a few wheat stalks onto a present with ribbon or twine. This adds a handmade touch and makes any gift feel even more special.

Equipment
- dried wheat stalks
- scissors
Instructions
- Start by gathering a small bunch of wheat stalks, around 5 to 7 for each bundle. I prefer using an odd number for a more balanced look, but feel free to adjust the size to your liking.
- Hold the bunch together near the top, just below the wheat heads. Take your embroidery floss and wrap it around the stalks once, tying a secure knot to hold everything in place.
- Now, begin wrapping the floss tightly around the stalks, covering about 2 inches. Rather than moving your hand around the wheat, I found it easier to hold the floss steady and spin the wheat stalks themselves to create the wrap.
- Once you've covered the desired area, tie another knot to secure the end of the floss, and trim any excess. Repeat for as many bundles as you'd like!
