FAQs about Homemade Pie Recipes:
Before we get to that tempting list, here are some questions people often ask about making pies at home. If you don’t see your question in this list, please leave it in the comments.
Also, please know that most of these pie recipes can be made with store-bought crust. However, because I usually prefer to make my crust from scratch, I’ve also included my go-to pie crust recipe for your convenience.

What is the most popular type of pie in America?
The Taste of Home magazine did a survey, and the most popular pies across the country are both apple pie and peanut butter pie. So, that saying “as American as apple pie” is pretty accurate!
Which type of pie has the most sugar?
If you make it the southern way (with bourbon, brown sugar, and corn syrup), pecan pie tops the list! There are 29 grams of sugar in a pie and 30 grams of added sugar. It is definitely one of the most calorie-dense pies you can make…but also one of the most delicious.
Is pie healthier than cake?
Since pies usually have slices of fruit, they have to be healthier than cake, right? If you are going just by calorie intake, pies are actually worse for you! (not what I wanted to hear). A typical cake has about 324 calories per slice, but a slice of pie will put you at about 450 calories.
How long does leftover pie last in the refrigerator?
I suggest eating pie within about 3-5 days. After that time, the pie filling will soften the crust, and it won’t have the same delightful flaky texture.
I love classic, but do you have any creative or unique pie recipes?
You bet I do! In fact, I have another post just like this one loaded with my best unique pie recipes. There are mini pies, slab pies, pies in a jar, and so much more! Check them out HERE.

The Best Pie Recipes with Classic Crust
These recipes are made the same way your grandmother or family members made pie. The crust is either homemade or storebought – but is always flaky and delicious!
1. Go-To Pie Crust
I perfected this recipe during IBC’s Year of Pie and have made this crust countless times since then. The recipe calls for butter and Crisco (the best of both worlds) and comes together in a food processor. You’ll find this crust fairly simple and almost foolproof.
2. Apple Pie with All-Butter Crust
This was the first pie recipe I made during the Year of Pie. What sets this pie apart from other apple pies is the buttery crust. To experience bliss on a plate, serve your slice warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream!
3. Strawberry Rhubarb Crumble Pie
My family eats this pie at many gatherings, and it reminds me of my grandparents, who grew rhubarb in their garden. The strawberry and rhubarb filling has just the right balance of sweet and tart. For textural interest, there’s a flavorful crumble topping. If you’re a fan of rhubarb, you’re going to enjoy this pie.
4. Blackberry Pear Pie
This beautiful pie recipe combines the flavors and colors of summer (blackberries) and fall (pears). I used cookie cutters to cut out dough leaves for the top crust, but you can use other shapes or freehand your cutouts. Before going into the oven, everything is brushed with egg and cream and sprinkled with sugar.
5. Cranberry Pecan Pie
Cranberries are a tasty twist on this pie recipe. They add color and a tartness that exquisitely complements the sweetness of the classic pecan filling. Your holiday guests are sure to be impressed with this delicious dessert.

6. Strawberry Rhubarb Pie
I can’t seem to get enough of rhubarb desserts. (I even did a rhubarb recipe roundup – you will definitely enjoy those ideas too!) In this pie, the pairing of a wide lattice crust with the strawberry-rhubarb inside is hard to beat. I’m certain your family will love this special treat as much as mine does.
Best Pie Recipes with Non-Traditional Crust
All of these pies are made with alternatives to the standard pie crust. These are great when you’re in the mood for something different.
7. Cinnamon Roll Apple Pie
You’ll want to bake this pie recipe in a clear glass pan so folks can see the crust. The “cinnamon rolls” are store-bought pie dough that you sprinkle with cinnamon and sugar, roll up, slice, and then spread out in the bottom and along the sides of the pan. For the finale, there’s a crumb topping with a swirl of cinnamon icing.

8. Graham Cracker Cream Pie
True to its name, this pie has a delicious graham cracker crust. It’s filled with vanilla custard and covered with a fluffy meringue that’s browned to perfection. You’ll see and taste why this pie recipe is so popular with my family.
9. Cinnamon Roll Butternut Squash Pie
This pie recipe has a fancy top crust that will get the attention of your guests. But don’t worry, it’s easy to make. You can use your favorite pumpkin pie filling, or if you’re feeling a bit adventurous, do what I did and make a butternut squash filling. I promise everyone will be talking and posting about your pie in a good way!
10. Blueberry Cream Pie
This is no ordinary blueberry pie. A generous layer of creamy custard is smothered with a homemade filling bursting with blueberries. And the graham cracker crust has a surprise in it – coconut for you and yours to enjoy!
Try a Slab Pie!
11. Pumpkin Slab Pie
This Pumpkin Slab Pie is an easy, delicious, and fun way to serve pumpkin pie. It’s unique shape and fun design is interesting, but still serves that pumpkin pie flavor everyone loves.

12. Mixed Berry Slab Pie
A classic flavor combination, this Mixed Berry Slab Pie will leave everyone asking for more. Serve with a scoop of ice cream for the ultimate dessert!

13. Apple Cranberry Slab Pie
This Apple-Cranberry Slab Pie is such a delicious combination of flavors. While I made this in the fall, it would be fabulous any time of the year!

BONUS Pie-Inspired Recipe:
14. Cinnamon Sugar Pie Crust Cookies
Have you ever wondered what to do with excess pie dough or craved a cookie but had none in the house? Turn that dough into a crunchy cookie by cutting it into strips (or seasonal shapes like I did). Sprinkle the shapes with cinnamon and sugar, then bake.

That’s a Wrap on the Best Pie Recipes!
I hope this roundup has you thinking about which pie recipe to make. If you need more inspiration, I’m putting together another post about pies. It’s titled “10+ Creative and Unique Pie Recipes” and will appear on the blog in the near future.
