Whether you need a quick gift idea or just want to treat yourself, I’m showing you how to make this fabulous Peppermint Sugar Scrub.
I can clearly remember the first time I experienced a sugar scrub. It was in the fall of 2006 and it was at a soap/bath and body shop in Soho (New York City.) The sale associate asked me if I wanted to try it and I said, “Sure.”. There was a fancy sink in the middle of the store and she washed my hands using the scrub. I was shocked at how soft my skin was when she was done. I don’t think I’ll ever forget that.
The good news is you can skip the $30 container at the store and instead, make a sugar scrub at home for just a couple of bucks. I’m going to show you how.

What is a Sugar Scrub?
Simply put, a sugar scrub is a bath product used to exfoliate and moisturize the skin.
Things like essential oils are added to provide a lovely aroma and make the experience of using a sugar scrub even more enjoyable.
How to Use
I personally like to just use my hands to apply the sugar scrub (where I want it or all over my body). You could also use a washcloth.
After rubbing in the sugar scrub, just wash it away with water. You’ll immediately notice how much softer your skin is. It’s pretty amazing.
It’s that simple! Ready to make some? Me too. Let’s do it!

Ingredients
You only need a few things to put together this scrub.
- granulated sugar – You can use any sugar you’d like. I prefer granulated as it provides a gentle exfoliation.
- fractionated coconut oil – I like using fractionated coconut oil here as it always remains in a liquid state.
- peppermint essential oil – Be sure you’re buying all-natural 100% oil. I recommend THIS one.
- food coloring – Adding food coloring is totally optional. I used THIS gel food coloring. You could also use something natural or a mica powder.
- Ball® 4oz Quilted Crystal Jelly Jars – THESE jars are the perfect size for gifting.
- ribbon – This is optional, but you can find the ribbon I used HERE.

How to Make
Now it’s time to walk you through the instructions. It couldn’t get easier, but I’ll still break it down step by step. There’s also a printable project card at the end of this post with a full ingredient list and recipe instructions.

It’s really that simple!
Whether you want a little self-care or need a quick and personalized gift idea, this is always a winner and something everyone and anyone can use.
Sugar Scrub Variations
Here are a few sugar scrub variations to try:
- Use a different essential oil. You can use whatever essential oil that you’d like as long as it’s safe for the skin.
- Use salt instead of sugar. The process is the same and salt can provide some different benefits.
- Include some add-ins. Try adding things to your scrubs like dried flowers.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does peppermint sugar scrub last?
Peppermint sugar scrub can last up to six months when stored in an airtight container like a jelly jar. Be sure to keep it in a cool, dry place, and avoid introducing water into the jar to maintain its freshness. The essential oils may begin to lose their potency over time, but the scrub will still be effective.
Can I use a different essential oil instead of peppermint?
Absolutely! While peppermint is refreshing and perfect for the holidays, you can swap it out for any essential oil you love. Lavender, orange, or eucalyptus are great alternatives, depending on the mood or season. Just ensure you’re using high-quality, skin-safe essential oils.
Is it safe to use this sugar scrub on sensitive skin?
This scrub is gentle enough for most skin types, but if you have very sensitive skin, you might want to do a patch test first. You can also adjust the ratio of sugar to coconut oil to make the scrub a bit less abrasive. If irritation occurs, discontinue use.
Can I use a different oil instead of coconut oil?
Yes! Fractionated coconut oil is lightweight and easy to work with, but you can substitute it with other oils like sweet almond oil, grapeseed oil, or jojoba oil. Keep in mind that the consistency of the scrub might vary slightly depending on the oil you choose.
Is food coloring necessary for this recipe?
Not at all! The food coloring is optional and purely for aesthetic purposes. If you prefer to keep things natural or are concerned about skin sensitivity, you can skip it entirely. The scrub will still work wonderfully and smell amazing.

What can I sub coconut oil for? Someone im thinking of is allergic to coconut. Would olive oil work well? Jojoba?
You can substitute it with other oils like sweet almond oil, grapeseed oil, or jojoba oil. Keep in mind that the consistency of the scrub might vary slightly depending on the oil you choose.

Just made a bunch of these for Christmas gifts! I had two scents of essential oil to use (I used to diffuse them in my car, but now that I have a new car, I don’t want to get rid of its natural smell because I like it lol) and one was in a pink jar and one in a green jar, so I used red and green food coloring. Absolutely perfect for Christmas! I hope everyone enjoys it. I used up almost all of the coconut oil, but I still have loads of everything else left, so maybe I’ll make more of these again next year!
I’m sure they will love it!
