Ingredients

You’ll need a few things to craft this Rhubarb Ginger Vodka. Here’s what you’ll want to gather:

  • Rhubarb: A tart vegetable that brings a fresh, vibrant edge to any drink. It is one of my favorite things to use in the kitchen. I look forward to it sprouting up in my garden every year.
  • Superfine Sugar: Dissolves easily for a smooth, sweet infusion.
  • Fresh Ginger: Adds a spicy kick to the vodka, enhancing its complexity. It works nicely with the rhubarb.
  • Orange Peel: Infuses a subtle citrus note, balancing the sharpness of the rhubarb.
  • Vodka: The clean, neutral base that marries all the flavors together beautifully. I used Tito’s, but feel free to use your favorite. I recommend using a mid-range vodka.

How to Serve

Here are a few suggested serving ideas for your fresh batch of homemade rhubarb ginger vodka! Cheers!

  • As a Chilled Shot: Serve this vodka chilled for a crisp, invigorating shot. Its bold flavors make it a fantastic sipping spirit.
  • Spiked Rhubarb Lemonade: Mix it into homemade or store-bought lemonade for a refreshing Spiked Rhubarb Lemonade. It’s ideal for sunny days or outdoor gatherings.
  • Rhubarb Mule: Update the classic Moscow Mule by using Rhubarb and Ginger Vodka in place of the traditional vodka. Mix with ginger beer and a squeeze of lime served over ice in a copper mug.
  • Rhubarb Vodka Tonic: For a simple and refreshing drink, mix this vodka with tonic water and add a lime wedge for garnish. The bitterness of the tonic beautifully complements the tartness of the rhubarb.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is superfine sugar and can I use regular sugar instead?
Superfine sugar, also known as caster sugar, dissolves more quickly than regular granulated sugar, making it ideal for drinks. You can use regular sugar, but it might take longer to dissolve completely.

How long should I let the vodka infuse?
The optimal infusion time is one month. This allows the flavors of the rhubarb, ginger, and orange peel to fully meld with the vodka, creating a well-rounded flavor.

Can I speed up the infusion process?
While some infusions can be hastened by shaking or more frequent mixing, this particular recipe benefits from a slow, steady infusion period to develop its unique flavors.

How should I store the infused vodka?
Once strained, store your Rhubarb and Ginger Vodka in a clean bottle in a cool, dark place. It can be enjoyed for up to a year if stored properly.

Can I reuse the rhubarb and ginger after straining?
After the infusion process, most of the flavor will be transferred to the vodka making the rhubarb and ginger less potent. They are typically discarded, but you can experiment with using them in cooking or baking for a subtle flavor.
