Why Vintage Wall Decor?

To begin, I thought I’d start by explaining “the why” which means why I like decorating with vintage and antique wall decor and why I think you’ll enjoy it too.

  • Unique Style: Vintage items are often one-of-a-kind and can add a unique touch to a home that newer, mass-produced items simply can’t match. Decorating with vintage items can also help to create a personalized and curated aesthetic. Your collection of vintage items can reflect your personal tastes, travels, and experiences.
  • Connection to the Past: Compared to using new items, vintage decor can evoke a sense of nostalgia, comfort, and a connection to the past. Vintage decor can make a home feel cozy and lived-in, creating a warm, welcoming atmosphere.
  • Versatility: Vintage items can blend well with a variety of decor styles. Whether your overall aesthetic leans toward rustic, modern, boho, or traditional, there are vintage pieces that can complement your look.
  • Cost-effective: In many cases, vintage items can be more affordable than new ones, especially when you find them at garage sales, flea markets, or second-hand stores.
  • Quality Craftsmanship: Many vintage and antique items were crafted with a level of detail and quality that is hard to find today. They can add a sense of craftsmanship and durability to a home’s decor.
  • Sustainability: By reusing and repurposing vintage items, you’re not only creating a unique look but also making an environmentally friendly choice.
  • It’s Fun!: (Possibly my favorite reason!) Hunting for the perfect vintage item can be a thrilling experience. The joy of stumbling upon the perfect piece at an antique store or flea market adds a whole new level of enjoyment to the decorating process.

Okay, now that you know the why, let’s get into the how. Here are some of my favorite ways to introduce vintage items to your home vertically … in other words on your walls.

Traditional Ideas

  • Vintage Artwork/Paintings: A classic oil painting or a mid-century modern print can add depth, color, and a sense of history to a room. These pieces tell a visual story and can be a central focus or a subtle complement to your decor. In my family room, I have a collection of vintage paint-by-numbers that I adore. I’ve also started to mix in vintage artwork among original paintings going up the wall by my staircase.

  • Historical Photographs: Black and white or sepia-toned pictures can be framed and hung in a collection for a dramatic effect.
  • Maps: Vintage maps are a fantastic choice for a study or office area. They can be educational and attractive, and make for excellent conversation starters.
  • Woven Tapestries: Hang a vintage-inspired tapestry on your wall to add texture, color, and a touch of bohemian charm. Look for tapestries featuring floral patterns, nature motifs, or historical scenes.
  • Vintage Photographs: Frame black and white or sepia-toned photographs from the past to create a gallery wall with a vintage touch. Family portraits, old cityscapes, or vintage fashion shots can all make excellent choices. I had this photo of my grandparents when they were younger enlarged and framed.

Functional Items

  • Vintage Cookware and Copper Pans: Hanging vintage cookware, especially copper pans, can bring a rustic, country charm to your kitchen. The warm glow of copper can also add a sense of warmth and sophistication, making the wall not just decorative but also a testament to the timeless art of cooking. In my dining room, I have a collection of three copper pans hung above each other. I love the bold shapes they add.

  • Antique Mirrors: Hang ornate vintage mirrors on your walls to add a touch of elegance and create a sense of space. Look for mirrors with unique frames or decorative details to enhance the vintage feel.
  • Wall Clocks: Choose antique or vintage-style wall clocks with intricate designs or classic elements. They not only serve a practical purpose but also act as decorative focal points. I have a cuckoo clock in my entryway that was a gift to my parents on their wedding day.

  • Antique Plates/Dinnerware: A classic vintage wall decor idea is to hang ornate or interestingly patterned plates. This works particularly well in dining rooms and kitchens. I love a gallery wall-style display with a beautiful collection of plates.
  • Wall Sconces: Install vintage-style wall sconces to create a warm and intimate ambiance. Opt for sconces with ornate detailing, vintage finishes, or intricate patterns to enhance the vintage aesthetic. These sconces can be hardwired, plug-in, or even candle-lit like the one in my kitchen.
  • Antique Quilts or Blankets: These can be hung on a wall to showcase their pattern and bring a soft, cozy feel to a room. Hang them on a peg rail or use an old ladder.

Storage Pieces

  • Peg Rail: A vintage peg rail can bring a rustic charm to any room. You can use it in an entryway for hanging coats and hats, in the kitchen for utensils, or even in the bathroom for towels, adding both style and utility. I have peg rails in my entryway, butler’s pantry, and bathroom.
  • Accordion Peg Rack: An old-fashioned wooden accordion peg rack can be used to hang a variety of items, from scarves and jewelry to kitchen tools. Its expandable nature makes it a versatile piece that can fit into many different spaces.

  • Vintage Storage Boxes/Crates: Wooden storage boxes or crates can be stacked on a wall to create a vintage shelving unit. It’s a great way to display collectibles and offers a unique take on wall storage.
  • Vintage Shelves: Vintage shelves can range from rustic wooden bookcases to ornate metal display shelves. Whether they’re used for books, knick-knacks, or framed pictures, they’re an excellent way to add storage space while maintaining a vintage aesthetic. In my butler’s pantry I used a $15 thrifted shelf to create functional storage. Filled with mason jars of commonly used dry ingredients I can easily access the things I need.

  • Vintage Cabinets: This is the same idea but a different type of storage / shelving. I love vintage cabinets like these. They are great for veritable storage which is handy if youre tight on space. In my family room, I have a cupboard with a glass front door that I use to store vintage tins. During the holiday season, it becomes my Christmas ribbon cupboard.

Unique Elements

  • Old Farm Tools: Items like vintage rake heads can be turned into interesting wall decor. For instance, a rake head can become a wine glass holder.  In my primary bedroom, I’ve added an apple-picking ladder to the wall. It’s just setting on the floor, but it gives great interest to this otherwise boring area.

  • Vintage Signs: Old metal or wooden signs from stores or brands can add a quirky, fun element to your decor.
  • Salvaged Architectural Pieces: Elements like old tin ceiling tiles, shutters, or cornices can make striking statement pieces. You can use larger elements but don’t overlook the smaller items too. I will often hang smaller architectural pieces above other artwork to give the artwork a grander look.

  • Old Book Pages or Sheet Music: Framed or used in a collage, these pieces can bring a very cozy, warm feel to a space.
  • Sports Equipment: Vintage sports equipment, such as antique tennis rackets, croquet mallets, and old baseball gloves, offers a unique decorating option for wall decor. When displayed, these items instantly add character and a touch of nostalgia to any space, making them both functional and conversation pieces in a home.

  • Vintage Lettering or Typography: Vintage letters, numbers, or even old stencils can be hung on a wall for an artistic effect.
  • Framed Vintage Postcards or Greeting Cards: These can be grouped together to create an eye-catching collage on the wall. During the Christmas season, I have a beautiful vintage holiday card displayed in a gold frame. (Which was also found on one of my thrifting adventures). I adore the look!

In the hustle and bustle of our modern lives, the allure of vintage decor lies in its ability to connect us to the past and infuse our spaces with warmth and personality. It’s about more than just aesthetics—it’s about embracing the charm of items that have stood the test of time, tell a story, and bring with them a sense of history and nostalgia.

Whether you’re a seasoned antiquarian or just starting to dabble in vintage decor, remember this: each vintage piece you bring into your home is not just an object—it’s a piece of history, a conversation starter, and a reflection of your unique style. 1. I have never seen anyone mix old and new like you! Your style is so warm, cozy, yet modern and vintage at the same time. I wish you had a picture book that I can scroll through, like a coffee table book. I do follow you on IG and love your blog.

  2. One of the things my husband and I liked to collect are vintage cast iron pieces such as matchbox holders, we have an antique cast iron letter box hanging just inside our front door, vintage cast iron nut crackers, things like that. I love having them around my house because of their vintage charm and also they remind me of the times I collected them with my husband. Thanks for sharing your wonderful and inspiring ideas!

  3. Thank you Michael for writing this post. I have antique items stored in my basement from my grandmother because I didn’t know how to incorporate them into my decor. You have great ideas and I will surely be bringing some of my items out to display.

  4. Using the antiques in my house that were found and restored by my grandparents and parents gives me a sense of continuity and brings up wonderful memories of “the hunt” in barns and shops when I was young. My idea of a fun day trip is nosing through bins and racks looking for treasures. I had a real treat yesterday finding your booth in Tarentum!
Your ideas and guidance are spot on.
