  • Heat the extra virgin olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the sausage and cook, breaking it up into small pieces with a wooden spoon. Drain off most of the fat from the sausage. Reduce the heat to medium and push the sausage to the side of the pan. Add the onion and garlic to the center and cook until tender. Mix in the sausage and remove the pan from the heat.
  • Preheat your oven to 400 degrees F.
  • In a bowl, combine the sausage mixture with the cream cheese, 3/4 cup of the mozzarella cheese, 3/4 cup of the Italian cheese blend, and oregano. Spread this mixture evenly into the bottom of a 10x8-inch baking dish. Top with the pizza sauce and a sprinkle of mini pepperoni reserving about 1/4 cup to garnish the top. Top the pizza sauce and pepperoni with the remaining cheese. Finish the top with the remaining mini pepperoni.
  • Cover with aluminum foil and bake for 30-35 minutes*. Remove the foil and turn your oven to broil. Cook an additional 5 minutes.
  • Serve hot with sliced bread.

*You can prepare this in advance and refrigerate it overnight. Just increase the bake time to about 45 minutes.

  1. I’m writing from Canada and can’t find these mini pepperoni (s) anywhere. Must be an American thing? I guess I’ll have to go with regular pizza pepperoni but it will lose the appetizer cuteness.

    1. I haven’t seen mini pepperoni for a couple of years now (I’m in Ohio USA) so I cut regular-size slices into quarters or halves for recipes that call for mini. You can stack 4 – 6 slices if you have a sharp knife; that way it doesn’t take so long to cut them up.

      1. That totally works. I usually find the mini pepperoni at Walmart. However, I haven’t looked for it recently, so I can’t confirm with 100% certainity it’s still for sale.

  2. Made this for a baby shower as the new mommy has been craving sausage calzones all pregnancy! It was gone well before anything else and she went crazy for it!!! I had made a second at the same time to be heated for a football party the next day but by the time I got home, my family had eaten the whole pan.

  3. This looks very tasty, but I’m not a huge fan of cream cheese. Could I leave it out? Or would it make the recipe not “dippy” enough? Thanks for any info!

  4. I made this recently for a get-together with some friends. I think I added more cheese than I needed (I always add extra cheese to everything!) because it was pretty hard on the top, which made it hard to ‘dip’! That being said, everybody went crazy for it and absolutely loved it! My husband just told me yesterday, that he pulled out a fork and was eating it straight out of the pan!! Haha, there were no leftovers and I promised to make it again for my husband! Thank you for this recipe!

  5. what a wonderful savory dip recipe, great idea, have not had or made anything like it, closest I can think of is a 7 layer dip or similar, so good thinking and thank you!

  6. Ok, I need some spring-print fat pants now. Perhaps a tasteful floral with elastic waistband.

Any other dippers you can think of besides bread? I love bread but it doesn’t love me. This dip would be a luscious addition to my menu for an Italian Valentine’s dinner date in my living room. I have seen cheese cups made in muffin tins, is there room for more cheese in this recipe? (leading question)…

    1. Hmmm. That’s a tough question. I’m not sure if I’d pair it with more cheese, but if that works for you – it might do the trick. Is gluten the issue? Are their gluten-free chips or crackers that would work for you? Rice cakes? Another option might be to leave out the pepperoni and use sliced pepperoni to dip. You could also use celery and bell peppers. I hope that helps or at least stirs up some ideas.
