I said it before and I’ll say it again, I could make a meal out of appetizers. In fact, that’s exactly what I did with these sausage wonton appetizer bites. They were so delicious I didn’t have the heart to get rid of them, so dinner they became. Boy, are they yummy?

If you’ve been following IBC for some time, you might remember that I made a similar appetizer recipe several years ago using these handy wonton wrappers. The other recipe is for artichoke wonton wrappers. They are made using the same method but have a different, but equally delicious filling.

What I love about using these wonton wrappers to make an appetizer is that they are so easy to work with and they make whatever you put inside of them look really fancy and special. Folks will think you made these delicate pastry cups, but you can just pick them up at most grocery stores. (It can be our little secret.)

In this recipe, they are filled with pork sausage, chopped peppers and onions, Colby cheese, and ranch dressing. I bet you never cooked with ranch dressing before! It may seem like an odd thing, but it adds such wonderful flavor and creaminess to this recipe.

I promise that you and your guests are going to devour these scrumptious little bites. They might be the perfect hors d’oeuvres recipe! Let me show you how to make them!

How to Make

Besides the flavor, one of the things I love about this recipe is that it comes together quickly.

I’ll walk you through the steps for making these wonton appetizers below. I’ve also provided a full ingredient list and detailed instructions in the printable recipe card below.

  1. Begin by preheating your oven to 350 degrees F.
  2. Lightly spray a mini muffin pan with cooking spray. Gently press the wonton wrappers into the mini muffin pan. This can be a bit tricky, so please reference the image below.

NOTE: If you attempt to just press the wonton wrapper into the cup, it’s going to tear. You want to pinch the wrapper together into the flower shape shown above, insert it into the baking cup, and then gently press it into place. With this method, I had no tears.

  1. Once all the wrappers are in place, bake until the edges of the wontons just start to brown: about 5 minutes. Remove from the oven and set aside to cool.
  2. In a large skillet, cook the sausage over medium heat. Break up the sausage into smaller pieces as it cooks. Cook until no longer pink.
  3. Remove the sausage from the pan and drain excess grease.
  4. To the same pan, add the chopped peppers and onions. Season lightly with salt and pepper. Cook for about 5-7 minutes, then return the sausage to the pan. Add in the shredded Colby cheese and ranch dressing. Cook until the cheese is melted and heated through.

Recipe Variations

Now that you have mastered the art of creating these delicious Sausage Wonton Appetizer Bites, it’s time to explore some exciting recipe variations.

  • One delightful variation you can try is adding a touch of sweetness to the filling. Consider mixing in a small amount of finely diced apple or pear to add a subtle burst of fruity flavor. The combination of the savory sausage with the hint of sweetness will create a delightful contrast in flavors.
  • If you prefer a spicier kick, you can incorporate some diced jalapenos or crushed red pepper flakes into the filling. The heat from these ingredients will elevate the flavor profile and add an exciting element to each bite.
  • For those who crave a more diverse filling, consider adding additional ingredients such as finely chopped mushrooms, artichokes, tomatoes, or other vegetables.
  • To take your presentation up a notch, you can experiment with different dipping sauces to complement the Sausage Wonton Appetizer Bites. Traditional options like ranch dressing or tomato salsa would be delicious!

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make these Sausage Wonton Appetizer Bites ahead of time?

Absolutely! The great thing about these appetizer bites is that you can prepare them in advance. After assembling the wontons, you can freeze them on a baking sheet until firm, and then transfer them to a freezer-safe bag or container. They can be stored in the freezer for up to a month. When you’re ready to serve, simply bake them straight from the freezer, adding a few extra minutes to the cooking time.

Can I substitute the sausage for a different protein?

Of course! While the recipe calls for sausage, you can certainly experiment with different proteins to suit your taste preferences. Ground chicken, turkey, or even diced shrimp could make great alternatives. Just make sure to adjust the seasoning accordingly to enhance the flavors of your chosen protein.

How do I prevent the wonton wrappers from drying out?

A: Wonton wrappers can be a bit delicate and prone to drying out when exposed to air for too long. To keep them fresh and pliable while assembling the appetizer bites, cover the unused wrappers with a damp kitchen towel. This will prevent them from drying out and tearing, allowing you to work with them more easily.

  1. Any thoughts on how to cook these ahead and then warm them? Serve them room temp? or is this not a good idea and I should look for a different recipe? I am thinking of taking them to a church event.

    1. Made this for a party. Everyone loved them! Thanks for the break from the normal! Had a few left over, I just put them back in the oven for a few minutes and I think they were better the second time. I toted the in a pyrex carrier with a heat pack

  2. Definitely a keeper. Needed a quick snack for last minute company. Took out some precooked Italian sausage from the fridge, whipped up a packet of Ranch dip (didn’t have any dressing), busted open a bag of shredded cheddar jack cheese I purchased at Costco, and a package of wonton wrappers and it was perfecto! Had a hot appetizer ready in less than 30 minutes. Thank you for sharing your recipe.

  3. Hi, these look pretty yummy. I was wondering if you could make them in a regular muffin pan? Maybe the wonton wrappers would not be large enough? Would like to know. Thanks!
