I’m continuing my little afternoon tea mini-series here on Inspired by Charm. If you’re new to it, I recently put together an afternoon tea and wanted to add some DIY elements to the table decor to make the display feel extra special, personal, and unique. One of those elements is this Handmade Vintage Dishware Tiered Serving Tray, and I couldn’t be happier with how it turned out!

I browsed a few local thrift stores to find beautiful cups, mugs, and plates to create my design. (I’ll use any excuse to go thrifting—I love incorporating vintage finds!) With a little creativity and strong glue, I put together this one-of-a-kind, completely custom-tiered serving tray. I think it adds the perfect whimsical and unexpected touch to my afternoon tea setup. Plus, the size is just right for finger sandwiches and mini desserts.

While I’m using mine for afternoon tea, this tiered serving tray works for all sorts of occasions. For example, it would be a charming way to serve cookies, appetizers, holiday treats, or little nibbles for a baby or bridal shower. By mixing and matching different dishware, you can customize it to fit any color scheme, celebration, or holiday. Love that! You can also create multiple layers or keep it simple with just one cup and one plate for a cake stand-style serving piece.

All in all, this is such a fun project that comes together in minutes. No special skills are required—just some glue and a little stacking. Let’s get into it!

Materials

Let’s get into the materials list. You only need two things to make this whimsical Tiered Serving Tray. Love that!

  • Cups, mugs, and plates in various sizes – These are the main components of your tiered serving tray. Look for plates that vary in size from large to small and cups or mugs that are sturdy and stack well. Thrift stores, antique shops, and discount home stores are great places to find unique pieces that complement your style.
  • E6000 glue – This industrial-strength adhesive is ideal for bonding ceramic, porcelain, and glass. It dries clear and creates a durable hold, ensuring your serving tray stays secure. Be sure to use it in a well-ventilated area and allow plenty of drying time for the best results.

How To Make

Okay, ready to make this tiered serving tray? Let’s do it!  I’ll still take you through the steps below. I’ve also provided a full ingredient list and detailed instructions in the printable recipe card below.

  1. Gather your plates and cups. Thrift stores are great places to find unique pieces at affordable prices, but you can also check HomeGoods or TJ Maxx for more options. Remove any labels from the dishware, then clean and dry thoroughly.
  2. To make a three-tiered stand like this one, you’ll need two cups or mugs and three plates in descending sizes, from large to small. Having a few extra pieces on hand allows for a better fitting and more visually appealing design (just in case something you selected doesn’t work).

  1. Before gluing, do a dry run by stacking your plates and cups to test the fit. Start with the largest plate as the base, add a cup (right-side up or upside down), then the medium plate, another cup, and finally the smallest plate. Make sure everything sits securely without wobbling. Sometimes cup handles or plate rims can cause instability.

  1. Once you’re happy with the arrangement, take a picture or note the order, then disassemble. Begin with the largest plate, placing it right-side up. Apply a generous amount of glue to the bottom (or top rim) of the first cup and position it in the center of the plate. Wipe away any excess glue with a damp cloth. Apply glue to the opposite side of the cup, then set on the medium plate right side up. Repeat this process with the second cup and the smallest plate.

  1. Allow the glue to dry overnight to ensure a strong bond before using. While the glue should hold everything securely, it’s best to lift and carry the serving tier by the bottom plate for added stability.

And that’s it!

There’s something so special about adding handmade touches to your entertaining endeavors. Don’t you think?

Plus, I love a DIY project that feels special but doesn’t require a ton of effort, and this project checks all the boxes. It’s easy, affordable, and completely customizable—no two trays will ever look exactly the same. Plus, it’s a great way to repurpose beautiful dishware that might otherwise go unused.

Variations

This Handmade Vintage Dishware Tiered Serving Tray is endlessly customizable, making it easy to create a piece that fits your style and needs. Here are a few fun ways to mix things up and make this project your own.

  • Single-Tier Cake Stand – Instead of stacking multiple layers, use just one cup and one plate to create a charming pedestal stand. This works beautifully for displaying cakes, cupcakes, or even a decorative candle arrangement.
  • Color-Coordinated Design – Want to match a specific theme or holiday? Choose dishware in a cohesive color palette, whether classic white for a wedding, soft pastels for spring, or bold holiday hues for Christmas entertaining.
  • Mismatched Eclectic Look – For a more playful and unexpected vibe, mix and match plates and cups with different patterns, colors, and styles. A floral plate paired with a geometric mug? Why not! This creates a charming, collected-over-time feel.
  • Mini Personal Serving Stands – Make smaller, single-tier versions and place them at each seat for an extra-special way to serve individual treats. These would be perfect for baby or bridal showers, holiday brunches, or afternoon tea.
  • Glass or Crystal Elegance – For a more delicate and refined look, use glass or crystal dishes instead of ceramic. This creates a more formal serving piece that would be beautiful for weddings, anniversaries, or upscale events.
  • Rustic Farmhouse Style – If you love a more rustic look, opt for stoneware plates and mugs with earthy tones, speckled glazes, or distressed finishes. This gives the tray a cozy, farmhouse-inspired feel that works well for casual gatherings.

With so many ways to personalize this project, you can create a serving piece that’s as unique as your style. Whether you keep it classic or go bold with unexpected pairings, this DIY is all about making something beautiful, functional, and totally your own.

Frequently Asked Questions

How strong is the glue? Will the tray be sturdy?
E6000 glue creates an incredibly strong bond that’s perfect for this project. Once fully cured, the tray will be secure and durable for serving lightweight foods like finger sandwiches, cookies, or appetizers. However, for added stability, always lift and carry the tray by the bottom plate rather than by the top tier.

Can I use a different type of glue?
For the best hold, I highly recommend E6000 glue since it’s designed to bond ceramic, glass, and porcelain. Other adhesives, like hot glue or super glue, may not create a strong enough hold or become brittle over time. If you need an alternative, look for a heavy-duty epoxy made for non-porous surfaces.

Is this food-safe?
Since the glue is applied only to the bottom of the cups and plates, there’s no direct contact with food. However, if you’re serving anything without a liner, parchment paper, or small dishes, you may want to double-check the glue manufacturer’s recommendations.

How do I clean the tray?
Gently wipe it down with a damp cloth after use. Avoid submerging it in water or putting it in the dishwasher, as excess moisture could weaken the glue over time. If needed, use a mild soap, but be careful around the glued areas.

  2. I cannot thank you enough for this wonderful idea for using vintage dishware! I have several pieces that were my mothers and grandparents. This is a way to use some of them and retain the memory of these special people I adored.

  3. This is brilliant Michael! I love that glue, and your idea of using cups and mugs is extra cool. Thanks for the great idea – I can’t wait to try it out!

  4. Hi Michael. What a lovely post. And you take the most amazing photos. WOW.
OK – so I have been doing this pretty much for years. May I offer a suggestion for next time you do this? Go to an aquarium shop and buy aquarium glass glue. It is water proof (like, um, an aquarium haha) and so durable and food safe – as it is also ok to be around delicate fishes. It holds up for years if not soaked forever in hot water. Just thought I’d let you know. Now please invite me to tea next time, b/c your afternoon tea looked splendid. ♥

  5. Michael, I think this is the prettiest DIY Tiered Tray I’ve seen. Pinned, of course.
Have you done a post on all the pretty goodies ON the tray?
    Thanks,
