Basic Muffin Recipe

I don’t know about you, but I love having a delicious base recipe that I can add to or manipulate in order to create dozens of additional recipes. That’s the case with this Basic Muffin recipe.

Want a blueberry muffin? Add blueberries. Lemon Poppy Seed? Add poppy seeds and lemon. Chocolate Chip? Add chocolate chips. You get the point, right? Your delicious options are only limited by your creativity.

I developed this recipe by using my favorite blueberry muffin recipe as a starting point and then tweaked a few things to make it adaptable for any muffin recipe. The results are delicious.

I also wanted to keep this recipe really easy and fuss-free so you only need a few kitchen tools and a mixer isn’t one of them. (I love a recipe that doesn’t involve me cleaning my mixer. Ha!)

Basic Muffin Recipe Variations:

As I mentioned above, the purpose of a basic muffin recipe is to have a go-to recipe that you can build upon to create virtually any variety of muffins.

My goal with this post is to provide you with a list of unique recipe ideas that you can create from using this base recipe. For now, I’m just sharing ideas. As I work and experiment with this recipe, I will be able to provide more detailed ingredient amounts for each type of muffin. Some ideas to get you started include:

  • Blueberry
  • Lemon Poppy Seed
  • Cranberry Orange
  • Strawberry Rhubarb
  • Chocolate Chip (I’ve already tried this. This recipe is coming soon!)

Generally speaking, I would add about 1 1/2 – 2 cups of adds in. As I try out different combinations, I will be updating this post with exact amounts. Check back soon!

Now that you are fully informed and fully equipped, let’s make some tasty muffins!

How to Make This Basic Muffin Recipe:

Begin by preheating your oven to 400 degrees F. Spray a 12-cup muffin pan with baking spray or line the cups with baking papers, then spray with baking spray.

In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Set aside. I’ve included a printable recipe card below for a full rundown of the recipe ingredients and instructions.

In a medium bowl, whisk together the milk, eggs, sour cream, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract.

Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients. Fold the two together gently. Mix until just barely/almost combined. This is the key to light and tender muffins. Do not overmix.

Spoon the batter into each muffin paper until about 3/4ths of the way full. Bake for 16-20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the middle of the muffin comes out clean.
