Frequently Asked Questions
What type of red wine should I use?
I recommend a light-bodied Spanish wine for this recipe. However, any dry red wine like Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, or even a Pinot Noir can work well.
Can I add other fruits or spices?
Absolutely! Sangria is versatile. Feel free to add fruits like cranberries or spices like star anise or cloves for a different twist.
How do I make a non-alcoholic version?
Replace the wine with grape juice or cranberry juice and omit the apple brandy. I also recommend adding a cup of brewed tea which help create the mouth feel of wine. You’ll still enjoy a refreshing, fruity beverage with fall flavors.
Is the cinnamon simple syrup necessary?
While it adds a warm, spiced sweetness, you can substitute with regular simple syrup or a touch of maple syrup. Adjust to your taste preference.

Did anyone use different wine then the Rioja? I went to two liquor stores and both didn’t have it. If so please name the ones you used Thank you 😊
Hi Tara! I’m so surprised your wine and liquor stores don’t have Rioja. It’s a pretty standard / common Spanish wine. However, that’s not a problem. This recipe can use any red wine. I would choose a dry red. Cabernet Sauvignon is said to be comparable to Rioja. Pinto Noir is my favorite red wine, so that would I would select. Cheers!

Thank you for responding 🙂 yea I tried two local ones but I’m going to try a big place tomorrow. I’m also looking for apple brandy they both didn’t have that either so crossing my fingers I find them thank you for your suggestions and if I can’t get Rioja I will use one of those 🙂
THE BEST SANGRIA EVER!!!
you don’t have brandy in the ingredient list so I didn’t buy it – but you have it in the instructions?
This was such a hit last year for Friendsgiving. Can’t wait to try it again this year….even if it’s just my family. Stupid Covid!
This is the BEST sangria we have had! I have a regular recipe I make but the whole family said this is the only one we are allowed to have from now on, no matter the season!! LOL Definitely do not skip the cinnamon simple syrup! It is the key to taking this to the next level. Sooooo good Thank you for sharing 🙂
So good! Making it for the second time in two weeks.
Is the apple cider sparkling or juice?
It’s just real apple cider. Not apple juice, not sparkling apple.
xo Michael
Thank you!!
One more question – what size bottle of wine? Thanks ✌️💕✨
Just standard wine bottle size – I believe that’s 750mL

I’ve made this Sangria twice for this fall, and everyone loves it! I too added a splash of club soda, just plain fabulous!!
This was the best sangria ever! I almost omitted the cinn. simple syrup, and boy am I glad I didnt, that is what put it over the top as The Best!! I also added a splash of club soda! Great Recipe to enjoy around a fire on a brisk Fall night.
How long do you think this would keep? More than 24 hrs?
This is currently sitting in the fridge, ready to be brought to my husband’s family gathering (where they NEVER serve anything alcoholic but were open to us bringing sangria 🙂 🙂 ). Used 1/4 cup apple whiskey instead of brandy and added whole cranberries instead of pomegranate seeds, but otherwise stayed on course with the recipe. The cinnamon syrup makes it absolutely DIVINE (at least from what I can tell from various test tastes :). Thanks for the recipe, hope it goes over well!
So excited! I’m sure everyone will enjoy it! Cheers!
xo Michael
Can we sit around your fire and share a pitcher of this or would that be imposing? Happy Fall!
