Before you read this post, there are two things you should know. First, I love sangria. Second, tinto is just a fancy Spanish work for red.

Okay, now that we have that out of the way, let’s get going. A few weeks ago my friends at Black Box Wines sent me two boxes of their wine. Yes, boxed wine. I know what you are thinking. Boxed wine has a bad rap.

Well, if there is one brand that can change your mind, it’s Black Box. Not only is it reasonably priced, it’s delicious, stays fresh for up to four weeks, and gives you four bottles in one box. Pretty amazing!

A couple weekends ago my brother and his family visited, so it was the perfect time to get out the Black Box Merlot and whip up a big ol’ jar of sangria! It’s entertaining at its easiest! While there are many, many, many recipes for sangria out there, nothing beats this simple, classic one. You know it’s going to be delicious every single time.

I picked up the glass jar at Walmart a few years ago. It was about $10, and as far as I know they still sell them. The jar is the perfect size for a big batch of sangria! It also makes entertaining a breeze. Just set out the jar with some glasses, ice, and a big ladle and your guests can easily help themselves.

All right, let me show you how easy it is to put this together.

Sangria Tinto

Here's what you'll need:

1 1/2 cups simple syrup*
1 box Black Box red wine (I used Merlot.)
1 1/2 cups blackberrry brandy
1 cup triple sec
1 1/2 cups orange juice
4 oranges, sliced into thin rounds
4 green apples, cored and sliced thin
4 lemons, sliced into thin rounds

Let's put it all together:

Combine all ingredients in a large pitcher, cover, and refrigerate for 2 hours or up to 2 days. Serve over ice.

*Bring 1 cup sugar and 2 cups water to a simmer over medium-high heat until sugar is completely dissolved. I usually let the mixture simmer for about 10 minutes to create a thicker syrup. Allow syrup to cool completely.

Aside from cutting up all of the fruit, this recipe is fool proof. Also, if you don’t need this much sangria, you can easily cut the recipe in half. I should warn you, however, that once you start drinking the sangria you may not be able to stop. In fact, you may end up sipping it straight from the glass jar.

    bwwaaahhhaaa….I would totally be drinking out of the jar! I love me some sangria and this looks amazing. I have a big jar like that also but I use it for my laundry soap. Probably not a good mix. Can’t wait to whip up a batch. TFS!

    I know what you’re saying about Black Box too. Someone brought it to a picnic and I was afraid of what it might taste like (dreading something like Franzia or Boones Farm). I was pleasantly surprised to find that it was delicious!

    I love sangria too. I find that you do not need to purchase expensive wine for it to be good. I like mine not too sweet so I cut down on the sugar/simple syrup and then make up to volume with diet Sprite. I have also found you can slice the oranges much thinner is you barely freeze them first. Summer is sangria time.

    I’m planning to make this, but I’d need to halve the recipe. How would you suggest calculating the wine? Just two bottles? Thanks for sharing!

      Honestly I forget how many bottle are in a box. I believe it’s four, so two bottles would make sense.

    We use to make sangria daily at a cuban reasturant I worked at. the staff at the end of the night would pour a shot of dark rum perferably Zaya or Zucappa on top of the glass of Sangria. We nick named it a Wacky Jackie it was SO good.

      No problem. The sugar and water creates the simple syrup which is added to the whole Sangria Tinto mix. Does that make sense?

      Amy, I’d say 18-20 people depending on how much people drink. And yes, honeycrisp would work well.

    Is it crisp enough for a warm day? Would the same recipe work if I used Sauv. Blanc?
