Modern Country Colonial Deck Styling

A couple weeks ago I showed you around my newly decorated side porch. Well, today I’m finally taking you on a tour of my deck.
I’ve actually had this space styled and functional for a while. However, because of one thing or another, I just never got around to photographing it. It has been a rather wet and muggy summer, so maybe I can blame my procrastination on that.
Regardless of the reason for the delay, here’s my deck, all decked out (Pun intended)!
Modern Country Colonial Deck Styling:
The look of this space was inspired by the Modern Country Colonial aesthetic that I’m going for in my entire home. You’ll see all three design elements interwoven in the space.
I’m so pleased with how the deck turned out. I wanted it to be more functional for entertaining and dining, and I think I’ve achieved that. It can now accommodate a group of guests in style. (If I’m entertaining just a few folks, I can use the cozy lounge area on my side porch.)
Styling Your Deck for Summer:
This large trestle-inspired table is the perfect size and pairs nicely with the modern black metal chairs. For more interest and personality, I opted for different head chairs.
I always love having a chaise lounge chair on a deck, so that was a must for me. When I found these, I thought they’d be great in the space, and they are. I didn’t want anything that needed cushions since this deck does not have a roof. The unique design of these loungers makes them comfy without the need for cushions.
Opposite the loungers are the round bucket chairs I had at my apartment. I love how they look on the deck. They are just the right size for that area and offer extra seating for guests.
You may have noticed that my large cactus is spending the summer outdoors. It’s done amazingly well here. It’s growing new arms and has even flowered twice! (If you follow me on Instagram, you’ll know this was a special event.)
I also had room to tuck in a grill. It sits outside the door to the kitchen, which makes it extra convenient when I’m grilling.
I intentionally chose a more neutral palette for the deck. Even though I haven’t done much entertaining yet, I wanted a color scheme that would accommodate party decor, seasonal decorations, and festive foods in every color of the rainbow!
This space has worked so well for a couple outdoor photoshoots that I’ve done for the blog, and I am already looking forward to styling a few things for fall! I’ll be sharing a post later this week, so you’ll see how much the color pops.
Because it was late in the season when I was able to get this space together, I sort of missed the proper flower planting season. While I was able to incorporate some color, I think next year (and maybe even this fall), I’ll be able to add in even more color with my plantings.
Nonetheless, I’m loving my modern country colonial deck decor. It’s been a lot of fun bringing it all together and watching it grow and change over the summer. I hope you’re digging it as much as I am.
Oh, and here’s a view of the deck from the backyard. I wasn’t sure what to think about the shape of this deck at first. Now, I’m totally digging it.

Love your deck! Is the deck itself painted or stained wood or did it arrive that color? I have a light yellow house with white trim and that light shade appeals to me. Thanks.
Your deck looks fantastic. You mentioned that you had a wet and muggy summer. Did the rattan chairs hold up as well as they look in the picture? Did you do anything special like cover them duri rainy spells? And one last question, how wide are the seats in those chairs?

Very comfortable yet modern. Like the black/white theme that you can accent with seasonal plants and flowers. Those stairs are certainly different structurally, but they make the back interesting. Also, it looks like a good sized deck which is important. No point in having a postage stamp sized deck. Nice work!

This is beautiful! I love that it’s neutral, but not at all boring. We will be getting a big deck when we move into our new house and this gives me some great ideas for making it into a functional space. Thanks for sharing!
We have the same metal black chairs and rusty water runs out of them whenever it rains. So much that it has stained or deck and we keep them tilted up against the table so water doesn’t get inside the legs. Have you had this problem and/or do you know of a solution?
Oh no! Mine do not have this problem. I assume there must be a hole the water is getting into. You should be able to patch the hole(s) to avoid this problem.

Your plants all look terrific! Thanks for mentioning the Bridal Veil above…I was going to ask too. 🙂 We’ve a pool, patio, pergola project going in this fall and I’m thinking Bridal Veil might be a good addition next summer depending on the light requirements.

The hanging baskets are known to me as “Bridal Veil”. In Pennsylvania they are pretty widely available at most nurseries in the spring / early summer.

Hi MIchael, I love your deck! I have a couple of questions….what is your umbrella anchored to? And I love the baskets you have the plants in….will they withstand rain, and can they be used more than one year/season? I love the neutrals!
Great questions!
1. The umbrella is just in an umbrella stand on the deck. I’ve linked the umbrella stand at the bottom of the post.
2. The baskets are quality baskets made from some sort of wood or branch. They will weather, but should last a few years. Baskets made from things like raffia or more absorbent materials won’t last and may mold.

Thanks, MIchael! I saw on looking at the post again that the umbrella is in an umbrella stand on the deck. In one of the photos when I read through the first time I see what I thought was the umbrella post is actually a tree trunk, further back in the yard. I thought it was cantilevered somehow. My mistake! Great posts….I always look forward to you sharing your projects!
