Today I’m sharing the autumn decorations in my living room. With a focus on color and a few nods to the season, my living room is now ready for guests.

Yes, my friends, it’s been forever and a day since I gave you a peek into my “formal” living room. (The last time was probably my 2018 Christmas tour. How time flies!) That’s why I’m so excited about today’s post.

As I’ve mentioned, I kept my autumn decorations low key this year. (If you’re interested, I’ve previously shared my family room/den here and my kitchen here.) I didn’t buy a single pumpkin this fall. Can you believe it!? So, if you’re looking for subtle seasonal decorating ideas, this post is for you.

If you’re curious about any product sources, I will do my best to link everything below.

All of the large furnishings are the same as when we last toured this space. The big difference, which you might not even notice, is the floor. As part of my recent kitchen remodel and the installation of new hardwood floors in my entryway, I had the floor in this room refinished so now all of the floors on the first level of my house are the same.

Of course, that meant that this past summer, everything in the living room had to be removed and later all put back into place. Such fun! Ha.

Once the furnishings were in order, I slowly added autumn decorations. As I mentioned above, I wanted to create a subtle feeling of fall rather than a more literal interpretation of the season.

The biggest source of inspiration for the room and my autumn decorations was vintage amber bottles. I picked them up throughout the summer as I visited antique stores and flea markets. As you’ll see, I placed these around the room and tucked in a few branches of bayberry for a befitting botanical element.

It’s amazing how one small element can inspire a whole space.

I love how this amber color works with my existing green chairs. That led me to a few other coordinating decorative items, including the faux dried hops wreath on the mantel, a couple of new pillows, and the throw on the couch. I think this vibrant yet mellow color combination is striking and fresh.

I also restyle my little living room bar cart. Cheers!

Living Room Autumn Decorations: Ghosts and Pumpkins

I couldn’t resist a few pumpkins and ghosts, but they are chic interpretations of the traditional versions – white ceramic pumpkins in my hutch and ghost tea light holders on my dry sink.

I only recently purchased the ghost tea light holders. I think they’re fabulous. I have a feeling I will treasure them for years to come.

The pumpkins are hanging out over in my vintage wood cabinet.

I had fun styling my shelves with books and lots of vintage brass treasures. As you can see I’ve started a little brass animal collection.

Earlier this week I shared a new fall playlist. In that post, I mentioned how much I love my Sonos players. You can see one hiding on my shelf below. It blends in so well and has such great sound!

One other thing I wanted to point out is this view into the living room. As part of my kitchen renovation, I had three large windows installed in my dining room. You can see them from this angle. It’s amazing how big an impact this one small change has made on the entire first floor.

As you can probably tell, the dining room is lacking in pretty much everything. I’ve been hunting for a new dining table and sideboard. I’m hoping to find something vintage/antique, but I’m open to anything. I’m also thinking that the dining room walls may need a coat of color. (Do you agree? Any suggestions?) So that’s to be determined as well. Stay tuned.

And that, my friends, is a look at the autumn decorations in my living room. I know it doesn’t look that different, but I thought you might enjoy seeing how a few colorful touches and subtle reminders of the season can affect the look and feel of a space.

  1. I love the subtle fall touches! Living in Florida means all year summer and we don’t get a real Fall. I always do my “faux Fall” and keep it subtle with brown and green leaves, brown bottles and spanish moss. Fall is very subtle here and I like to keep my decor for the seasons to what I see outside. (Except Christmas… then it’s faux snow baby! I was admiring the plant in your living room and was getting ready to ask if it is a Ficus Audrey and then saw you listed it in your sources. Thank you for that! I love Ficus Audrey/Audrey Ficus and have a baby I am growing. They add structure, texture and life in a more “elegant” or at least more subtle way that the Fiddles. You are the first person, other than myself, who has shown one in the home. Hope they become more popular because I think they deserve the attention. Happy almost Fall. Thanks for the inspo!!

  2. What a perfect room! I love how it’s not over-the-top fall leaves and pumpkins. The amber is perfect, especially with the green chairs, which I so wish were still available! Thanks for the inspiration!

  3. I adore your kitchen. It’s really bright and airy and contemporary. My hubs is a custom cabinet maker who could never ever ever get the time to make our kitchen lovely. Odd. Anyways we finally had our kitchen fixed up by someone just in time to put our house up for sale. 🙂

  4. I think a blue color would be great in your dining room. When I saw the blue wallpaper in your bathroom I knew I had to have something like that in mine. So picking a dark blue that plays off that wallpaper would be beautiful! The white windows, your touches of gold, and the would floor would all go great with a dark blue. I’ve used Restoration hardware’s dark blue in my office and I love it. I’ll have to find the name of it.

  5. Your living room is beautiful! I could spend hours in there with a good book.

We have a shade of green in our house that we have loved for years, it is called Turtle Dove, by Behr. It is a hint of green on a creamy background. Pale enough to almost be an off white, but when compared to a true white the color pops. We have it in our guest room, with white beams on the ceiling, and it is restful and cool and blends well with other colors. Just a suggestion, I think it would look beautiful with your soft gray shades in your living room.

I’ve been a silent follower of your blog but have really enjoyed it, and I always know there’s something fun and creative to look forward to!

  6. Michael,

You have the BEST taste. You eye for details is amazing. I wouldn’t change a thing. Your pairing of the green and the amber bottles is perfect. I wish you could come and style my house.

  7. Love the emerald green with amber brown, so nice and rich. Your subtle play of color, texture (hello, metal fellows and cozy throws!) and styling is brilliant. Those needlepoint coasters – ♥!
We just downsized into a city loft, and i am really enjoying a spectrum of grays against our wood floors, which are much the tone of yours. Our colors range from very light grays (SW March WInd) to dark accent walls (Licorice, Pittsburgh Paint). I love the contrasts and how they seem like neutrals with art and furniture placement. I’m sure you’ll come up with something just as handsome as everything else you do, Michael! Love your blog.

  8. Love your room and how you have it styled. It looks so comfortable and welcoming. Thank you for inviting us into your beautiful home and sharing your thought process with us. Love your brass rabbit, your glassware and those chairs! I do have a question about the bottle on the top of your drinks cart….is it apricot liqueur? If it is, what is the brand name and did you purchase it in the states? Thanks.

  9. Michael, you have achieved a wonderful balance in your living room with just enough subtle fall touches. Lovely! As for the dining room, I am a fan of keeping walls light in color as here in the Northeast, we need as much light as we can get in the winter. Have you checked your local Habitat of Humanity Restore for furniture? I found the perfect hutch for my kitchen there. Good luck with your hunt!

  10. Hi Michael, another beautiful room tour with those gorgeous green chairs. Would a green in your dining room be a good pick? Love how you grouped the bar accessories on the cake stand. Wish I had a dining table for you. Then when you come for the table, I could say “ Michael, since your here, what would you do with this house!”

  11. This is just beautiful. I’m not a big holiday decorator (I’ve turned into my mother!) I love how subtle this is. Can’t wait to see what you do for Christmas.

  12. Love the subtle-ness and also the green and amber combo. And textures too! Your taste inspires me. Thank you!!
Ps–wish I could find such simple but elegant bookcases–are they custom and created as part of the mantel look? Teresa

  13. I’m new around here but I have to say “where have I been that I’ve been missing all this wonderful-ness!” Thank you to Miss Layla from TLC for steering me in your direction!
Gosh this room is everything I love! Those green chairs though! SWOON!
I am going to have a blast looking thru your previous posts! 💗

  14. OMG – Michael I love everything – but for a reason I can’t believe! We just had the whole interior of our house painted – an ordeal of 2-1/2 weeks, but it is looking great. I have done a few styling updates as well – today we are expecting delivery of a brushed brass bar cart – It looks like yours!!! I also have some large dark amber glass bottles – they were originally from a doctor’s office – I found them at a local antique shop. Also, your white cake plates are identical to mine that I have in the kitchen – I also have a small soft yellow. And lastly, I have a similar brushed gold and glass lamp in my foyer. Wow – even my husband is impressed with my decorating! I showed him the pictures of your new kitchen – he loved it. Thanks for continuing to inspire us – my husband said he thinks I am on the cutting edge!!!

  15. Your living room looks great! I love your green chairs. But my very favorite things were the green, horse rider needlepoint coasters. I’m guessing they’re vintage or do you have a source for them? Always love the details of your vignettes.
