As you may know, the Mint Julep is the official drink of the Kentucky Derby. (I have a delicious sweet tea mint julep recipe if you’re interested.)
However, did you know that the Preakness (another race which takes place two weeks after the Kentucky Derby) also has an official drink? Well, it certainly does, and it’s called the Black-Eyed Susan.
Brief History
The popularity of the Black Eyed Susan cocktail has been steadily growing, making appearances at countless events and gatherings. But where did this iconic cocktail come from?
Legend has it that the Black Eyed Susan was first created in honor of the Preakness Stakes, which is a horse race held annually in Baltimore, Maryland. It is said that the cocktail was named after the state flower of Maryland, the black eyed Susan.
The first-known recipe for the Black Eyed Susan dates back to the 1970s and included vodka, peach schnapps, orange juice, and pineapple juice. However, the recipe has undergone some changes over the years, with several variations popping up.
Nevertheless, the Black Eyed Susan remains a favorite among cocktail enthusiasts. With its fruity and refreshing taste, it’s perfect for any occasion. So, if you’re planning a get-together, impress your guests with some cocktail history and serve up a delicious Black Eyed Susan.

Ingredients
To make the best Black Eyed Susan cocktail, you’ll need a few key ingredients.

Traditionally, a Black-Eyed Susan Cocktail is garnished with a citrus wedge and a fresh cherry. I couldn’t find any fresh cherries in my locale, so I used my DIY Horse Cocktail Stirrers. I think they look perfect in any drink. You can learn how to make them here.
As I mentioned above this recipe has undergone some changes over the years. Even the Preakness itself has changed the recipe. No matter how you make it though, it’s a bright and citrusy cocktail you’ll enjoy sip after sip.

Looks great! But the recipe is for Purple Canbage Coleslaw! ???
Oops! CABBAGE…not whatever that other word is!
HAHAHA! Oh dear. Just when you think you’re getting a delicious cocktail, you get coleslaw. My bad. That’s what I get for publishing a post before I’ve had my coffee.
