Rum Punch | Inspired by Charm #DrinksandLinks

I had every intention of having my list of 2014 goals / resolutions ready for today. However, it just didn’t happen. I have a pretty good list going, but I don’t think it’s something I want to rush. So, instead of sharing my goals with you today, I thought we could do a Drinks and Links! Drinks. Goals. Kind of the same thing, eh?

Last year around this time I was preparing to head off on my first cruise. Remembering that fun time with my friends, I thought today’s cocktail could double as a little #FlashbackFriday. And since there are no cruises for me in the near future, I figured a boy could dream and savor the flavors of a fabulous Caribbean vacation. Right?

Today I’m showing you how to make a classic Rum Punch. It’s a fairly basic drink, but the flavors have a somewhat magical power that instantly transports you to a tropical island where the sun in shining, the water is crystal clear, and the drinks are flowing. After temperatures in the negatives this week, I think a little sunshine in a glass would be most welcome.

Beyond the flavor, one of my favorite things about this cocktail is the happiness-inducing color.

The ombre effect comes from the grenadine which sinks to the bottom and a little bit of dark rum which floats on the top. Isn’t it beautiful?

Let’s mix one up.

Rum Punch

Here’s what you’ll need:

3 ounces of pineapple juice
2 ounces of orange juice
1 ounce dark rum, plus 1/2 ounce to splash on top
1 ounce coconut rum
splash of grenadine
lime slice for garnish

In a glass, pour in the pineapple juice, orange juice, 1 ounce dark rum, and 1 ounce coconut rum. Gently stir. Then slowly pour in a splash of grenadine. The grenadine will sink to the bottom giving you that gorgeous coloring. Then, add 1/2 ounce of the dark rum to the top. Garnish with a slice of lime and float away into a tropical paradise. A cute straw helps, too.

Although the drink looks gorgeous, I like to give it a little stir to get everything all mixed up before sipping the day way.

Hello, I agree with all that you spoke about above…But One thing I am thinking a pitcher of these and some friends and a good movie would be a good start to a Saturday evening…lol Just Saying… Thanks for sharing this I was just wondering where I could find this recipe,. By the way, we went a cruise with 30 other people from our home town area, and we all sure enjoyed the Miami Vice, Blended drinks…Half Pina-Colada and Half Strawberry Daiquirí poured into a glass at the sametime…so you need to blenders..See, you need a friend to make and share these with…

Gorgeous, and that sounds amazingly tasty with the grenadine. I had a fabulous rum punch in Penzance (served to me by people in, yes, pirate costumes) at the Golowan festival. They said their secret was in making a simple syrup infused with spices. Alas, I have yet to recreate the right blend of spices, but it’s an effort I’m willing to pursue. 😉

The grenadine adds great flavor and color. The spiced simple syrup sounds fabulous! You’ll have to let me know if you come up with the right combo. I’d love to give it a try.

You are so right that these colors have a total happiness effect! I’m pinning now and can’t wait to give this a try next time we entertain.

I have a golf tournament coming up and I would like to make this but I see this recipe is only for one drink at a time. Do you have a recipe that I could use on a larger scale?

    Thanks

  • Bev at

Looks delicious! Would this cocktail work in big batches in a drink dispenser or punch bowl?
