A Fresh Look for the Basement Stairwell

Although it felt like a never-ending project, I’m happy to report that my basement stairwell is painted! Before we get into the details, I just want to apologize for the quality of the pictures. This is a tight space, so capturing it was a bit tricky.

While the area has yet to be decorated, the painting is complete and that makes me a happy man. When I introduced this project, I told you I’d chosen a green color for the walls. However, after picking out a new wall sconce and art for the space, I changed my mind and went with a light violet. It’s Elation from Sherwin Williams.

As many of you know, gray has been my color of choice lately. For this small space, though, I wanted something a bit bolder and happier. I think I found it. I also love how clean it makes the space look and feel. Let’s take a look at a before shot.

And now after.

I seriously cannot tell you how pleased I am to have this painting project completed. This space has bothered me since I moved into my house. Ultimately, I was waiting to get a new door installed, and after that happened, I was free to make the rest of the space look as good as the new door. It’s amazing what a big difference a small change like this can make.

I probably went a little overboard with the crown molding and shelves, but I’m so glad I did. I think they finish off this area and tie it in with the rest of the house.

Like I mentioned previously, I found a great wall sconce for this space. I also picked up some wall art by an artist I discovered while traveling in Ireland this past summer. I’m also trying to decide what I want to do for rugs. I’m leaning toward a runner. I could leave the stairs as they are, but I think a runner will protect the finish and add a bit of coziness to the space.

Once, I get all of those details finalized, I’ll pop back in with an update on the completed space. Sound good?

What do you think of this little transformation?

  1. What a difference paint makes! I can’t wait to see the artwork and lighting. Yes, I agree, a runner would add coziness to the entry way. I’m anxious to see the total improvement . . .

  2. I LOVE the color– fresh & bright! The floor painted gray is awesome,
I can’t wait to see your new sconce– I love this hallway-
    It’s beautiful , bright, welcoming & modern.

  3. This is simply gorgeous. I am a “grey” girl myself and don’t usually like color but this is subtle, sophisticated, clean and bright. great Job! I cannot wait to see the finished area!

  4. I am not a big “comment-er” on the blogs that I read, but I had to leave one today. I can’t BELIEVE no one else has gushed about how beautifully this space has turned out. I realize it is only a stairwell, but I’ve never wanted to stand in a stairwell so much in my life. It is the perfect mix of warm welcome and cool modern style. (So glad you ditched the green!) Can’t wait to see the finished version.

While I’m rambling, I also wanted to mention that your blog is always so inspiring. Reading it is one my favorite treats of the day. Thank you for sharing your creativity!
