Okay, so Nate is not actually in my dining room. (I wish!) He is here, however, in design spirit and that’s good enough for me. Let me explain. A few weeks ago I got an email from my friends at Target asking if I wanted to work on a mini-redesign in my house with Nate Berkus and his exclusive collection with Target. Well, after I made sure I wasn’t dreaming and had myself a little freak out, I responded yes and had a call scheduled with him two days later.

The folks at Target asked me to pick a room in my house that needed a little refresh. Nate would review pictures and offer suggestions and products during the call. As I’ve mentioned here on IBC, my style has shifted over the past few months. It didn’t take long for me to notice that my dining room could benefit from a little refresh. Basically, I was thinking a few new amazing accessories from his collection would certainly do the trick.

It was a Friday morning when Nate called. (And yes, I was completely nervous and probably made a fool of myself on the phone.) To my surprise, Nate had bigger plans for my dining room. His first suggestion was to paint. Honestly, that threw me a bit since I had no intention of painting my dining room. Plus, he wanted me to paint my dining room a dark gray, Dior Gray to be exact. He also had other suggestions for improvement, including moving a few pieces of furniture around and adding in some new accessories. He did, however, say that he loved my curtain panels, which totally made my day because I made them myself a few years ago. Point for Michael! And I have to say, even from the ten-minute call I had with him. he is as kind, genuine, and friendly as you would expect. When the call ended, I was both ridiculously excited and totally nervous. Did I really just talk to Nate Berkus?

Anyway, I was honestly most anxious about the paint change. I have had and loved this dining room for so long. However, I put my trust in Nate and went for it! And I’m oh so happy that I did!

As you can see, the color, furniture changes, and bold accessories have given me a whole new space. I’m totally in love.

As much as I loved my bright yellow dining room, this change is so welcome. Paired with the white molding and touches of green and gold, the gray walls are totally chic. while still warm and inviting.

To help me bring this new look together, Target provided many pieces from Nate’s new Spring 2014 collection. You guys know I’ve been a fan of Nate’s designs for some time and I’m especially loving this collection. Everything seems to have a modern twist with lots of graphic patterns, yet it still feels unique and collected. Plus, it’s so affordable. Part of Nate’s philosophy is that a home should be a reflection of the people who live there. So, I used the new pieces that I love and mixed them in with lots of things I already owned.

I think I was most excited to get this gold table lamp. Partially because it’s freaking stunning, but I’ve also been looking for a way to include more light in this room since I moved in five years ago.

I actually DIY’d the table it’s on. Nate originally suggested using his Hexagonal Side Table (which I love), but it didn’t fit with my radiator. So I designed my own table to match his. It fits perfectly and is super functional.

Lots of other accessories add color, texture, and sparkle.

It was such a fun challenge accessorizing this space, but I think I pretty good job!

A few plants were also necessary for a new spring dining room. I’m loving this orchid I picked up from ProFlowers. It was the perfect finishing touch. I also moved one of my fiddle leaf figs to this space in a new seagrass basket. The pattern and texture on this piece make it a killer!

  1. I’m loving the color on the wall……I think it goes so well with the style you have migrated to. The white trim and accessories and the pops of green in the room really make the whole space come together. What an incredible experience to have Nate Berkus help you design a room in your house! (even more exciting is to have him compliment the curtains you made yourself!!!) It’s so fun to watch your style change and see how you are transforming your home……every room (or at least those that we see!) goes together so well and looks totally like they’ve had your touch!!!

  2. The room looks great! I really love the walls and your dining chairs are gorgeous!

I have been wanting to get a plant for my house and I’ve seen a lot of homes online with Fiddle Leafs and have heard they are pretty easy to care for. Do your cats bother them? I am nervous about that because I think they are poisonous to kitties. Thank you!

  3. How exciting! The room looks fantastic. I LOVE the dark gray walls with splashes of white — so fresh, polished and sophisticated. Just pinned for myself down the road! Congrats on such an awesome opportunity!

  4. I am in LOVE with the wall color! It makes everything pop. Especially those killer curtains. I really like the turtle shell dish. I don’t know exactly why, there’s just something unique and different and very unexpected about it. Plus the texture and tones. One day, when I don’t have toddlers in the house, my house will be pretty like yours!

  5. I was a bit upset at the idea of painting your wonderfully cheerful dining room……but it looks AMAZING!!! I love the grey with the crisp white trim, green cabinet and warm wood dining table…..plus a few dashes of gold. Wonderful combination. The only thing that does bother me is the rug……I like the patter but not the brownish colour. I find it blends in too much with the table and floors and leave it feeling a little blah down there. But that’s just me. As long as you love it that is all that matters! Great job 🙂

  6. Michael, the room looks amazing! I saw your posts right after getting off the phone with Nate and your reluctance on the color change. The update though, is incredible and the contrast of the dark walls with the white mouldings is beautiful. I also appreciate that you still have a lot of YOU in the room mixing in old elements with the new – like your cuckoo clock. I also admire, which is my design aesthetic too, the mix of design styles like your neoclassic chairs at the window with more modern chairs at the traditional style table. Great Space! Can you give Nate my number??? Pretty Please!

  8. Love this! You have done a great transformation! I too love Nate’s ideas! The grey is striking! I guess gold is back! Nice job! Thanks for being an inspiration to all of us!

  9. Michael, I really love the new dining room! However, I imagine Nate was rather giddy at having the chance to work with YOU! Believe it or not, I had never heard of him until I saw his name on your blog. I admit I am not a regular shopper at Target but have become more so since seeing your blog. You have amazing taste, and I enjoy following you on your blog, Pinterest, and Twitter!

    1. Haha. That makes my day! You heard about me before you heard about Nate? Point for Michael. 😉

And thank you so much for your super sweet compliments. They made my day.

      xo Michael

  10. I don’t normally feel very ga-ga about any celebrity but, I swear, I probably would have fainted if I was to speak to Nate. I have followed him ever since he first started showing up on Oprah. He just seems so genuinely lovely and I am so glad to hear he might really be like that. SO EXCITING! That gray looks absolutely STUNNING. With all the white trim and rich wood and that pop of green, oh my. If I had a room that got any light I would totally steal your room. Gorgeous!

  11. You talked to Nate Berkus. On the phone. Shall I reach through the monitor and slap you just to make sure it’s reality?!?! I’m so happy for you- what a great opportunity. And I love that wall color with the pops of white and gold. I went dark in one room and I absolutely love it. So excited to see where your new style leads!
