Like it or not, fall is fast approaching. In fact, a week from today is September 1. To unofficially kick off fall here on IBC, I thought we’d take a look back at some of my favorite fall home decor ideas. Whether you’re ready for a change of seasons right about now or want to hold on to summer a while longer, I hope you find some seasonal inspiration.

Quick Disclaimer: Did you know that many of us bloggers have to create content a month or more in advance so that search engines like Google and social media platforms such as Facebook recognize our work as “relevant.” I won’t bore you with the details, but I ask for your kindness toward me and other bloggers who seem to share things a bit early.

In posting the ideas early, we also want to give you enough time to actually use these ideas this season. I hope that makes sense. Beyond bloggers, I hope you’ll also be kind to folks celebrating whatever season they want to celebrate. If it makes you happy and doesn’t hurt anyone, I say go for it! Thanks.

Having been blogging for 8+ years, I’ve managed to build quite a collection of content here on Inspired by Charm. (Follow IBC on Facebook or Twitter to keep up with archived content.) It’s fun for me to look back and see things I’ve worked on over the years and notice how I’ve grown and changed.

When I was recently scrolling through some of my fall content, it dawned on me that it would be fun to take all of you with me on a walk down memory lane. So today I’ll be sharing many of my favorite fall home decor ideas as well as some of the most popular fall content as determined by your shares on social media and how many times a particular post has been viewed. Today’s post will focus on home decorating ideas and crafts; next week, we’ll have a look at recipes.

You can click on any of the photos or links in the mint green color for more photos and information.

My Fall Home Tours are undoubtedly IBC reader favorites. The number of comments on the tours far exceed many of the posts here on the blog. This tells me that many of you enjoy touring around my home. It will be interesting to see how my Fall Home Tour comes together this year as I will be sharing a different space (my Pittsburgh apartment!).

Last year I also had fun decorating my deck. It turned out beautifully with seasonal foliage and a few Halloween and other autumn touches.

Favorite Fall Decor DIY Ideas:

If you enjoy getting crafty in the fall, I’ve shared lots of fun, festive, and simple ideas over the years. One of your (and my) favorites is this Color-Wrapped Wheat. It continues to wow year after year. I made it three years ago, and it still looks as fresh today as it did then.

This succulent pumpkin planter was and still is, among my favorite fall projects. I loved that I was able to reuse some succulents to perfectly blend summer and fall.

Speaking of getting creative with gourds, remember my “Acorn” Acorn Squash? Simply by adding a bit of twine to a squash, you’ve got a really beautiful, rustic, and oversized acorn.

This Fall Cork Table Decor was a favorite project from last year. It was easy to make and created such an impact on my table. I also appreciate it,’s multi-use functionally. Whether you need a table runner, placement, or trivet – this will work!

I was also on a stamping kick last year, creating these custom and functional napkins as well as some seasonal treat bags. With the almost limitless variety of stamps and textiles, you can make whatever suits your fancy.

Speaking of a customizable fall project, this tag banner is just that. I created one for Halloween and two for fall. It truly doesn’t get any more simple, and you could customize these for any season or celebration.

And if we go way back to 2013 (remember when my dining room was yellow/orange), you can grab a collection of tips for styling the perfect fall centerpiece. Four years later, the advice in that post is still solid.

  1. Happy Winter Wonderland! I just discovered your Blog thru BH&G Christmas ideas special interest publication.
I’m from Swansea, Massachusetts so I am living in a Winter Wonderland right now. You couldn’t have come into my life at a more perfect time. I recently lost both my parents a day apart. During the past 2 years I had been decorating my Moms bedside with any holiday that comes our way and fresh flowers every week. After their passing I felt and still do that loss. I realized how I had to make up for it in some way. I went crazy decorating for the fall and changed it from Halloween to Thanksgiving by replacing a few items in my yard and on my mantel and chandeliers and window seat. My grandkids have enjoyed it so much and since Christmas have begged me not to take them down so thence we are now decorating our Winter Wonderland Memories!

  2. Hi Michael. I love this post with so many fall ideas in one place. I love your mantel ideas, shelves and centerpieces. It’s nice when they can be put together without adding a lot of things that have to be stored all year. 😀I think I’ll try the color wrapped wheat this year. Very charming! Thanks and enjoy the beautiful fall season!

  3. Michael- Loved this article on fall décor so much I shared it on my real estate business page. I thought my clients would really enjoy your blog and get some great ideas for giving their homes a fall facelift.

  4. I LOVE your new apartment, but this post made me lonesome for the quaintness of your St. Marys’ house. Do you ever feel the same? In case no one’s told you: You make Mother Nature’s fall handiwork even more beautiful. Thank you!

    1. I know that life will lead me back to a house and I can’t wait for that day. However, I’m embracing my current space as a new adventure and challenge, knowing that it’s not permanent. But yes, my St. Marys home is beautiful and was always fun to decorate. I’ll definitely be missing it over the next few months.

      xo Michael

  5. Fall is my favorite season and I’m ready for it as soon as the temperature gets over 85! Not a fan of the intense summer heat 🙂 Bring on the boots and scarves!

  6. I live in the South, where it’s usually still pretty hot even into the fall months…so it’s fun to imagine for a moment that far-off time when it *is* actually a little cooler out there. This post accomplished that nicely 🙂

    1. Awww! Thanks so much Emma! I could hold unto summer forever (or make fall last for 4 months), but I unfortunately don’t have those powers. Ha!
