These Peanut Butter Cup Rice Krispies Treats take rice krispies treats from good to great with the addition of peanut butter cups and a layer of chocolate.
Begin by greasing a 9x13-inch pan with butter or cooking spray. Set aside.
In a large saucepan, slowly melt the butter over low heat. Once it's melted, add the marshmallows and stir until melted. Then stir in the peanut butter.
Next, add the cereal to the marshmallow mixture and still until completely combined. Press half of the mixture into your prepared pan.
Place a single layer of the peanut butter cups on top the Rice Krispie mixture. Then add the remaining mixture over top and press down. Let cool.
Finally, melt the chocolate chips and shortening in a double boiler. Or in a microwave save bowl, microwave at 30-second intervals, stirring in between, until the chocolate is melted and smooth. Spread evenly over the top of the Rice Krispie treats. Garnish with sprinkles (optional). After the chocolate is completely set, cut and serve the treats.
