Whatcha Packin’

I’m in the midst of preparing to head out of town for a work trip / vacation. Even though summer is just about in full swing here, I’m really looking forward to a week away. My brain has been a little foggy the past several months, so I’m hoping that some relaxation and refocusing will help clear my head.

As I start packing, I thought it’d be fun to share a few of my travel essentials for this trip, and travel in general. I haven’t previously posted about this, so I hope it’s helpful and mildly interesting. Here’s what I’m packin’!

Since this is a work-related trip, technology is a must. I have a Macbook Air that goes with me whenever I travel. I’d prefer to just carry a tablet, however, it doesn’t have the functionality and programs I need. Another travel essential for me is my phone. I’ll be leaving the country, so I’ve enabled a global plan should an emergency arise. This is especially important because I’m traveling alone. I’ll also use my phone as my camera. I estimate that 80% of my travel photos are taken with my iPhone. I will bring along this point and shoot camera for any better quality pictures I want to snap. I find traveling with my DSLR to be cumbersome due its size, having to switch lenses, etc. I also worry about it too much, so I rarely take it on trips. A backup power charger is another must when I travel. This particular charger powers my phone from dead to fully charged several times before needing to be recharged. Worries about finding an outlet are a thing of the past.

I’m headed to the Caribbean again, so beach attire is a necessity. I’m a big fan of this style of swimming trunks from 2xist. They are on the shorter side, making them a bit more stylish without being too short. A few tank tops are likewise a must. I think black looks best on me so I usually pack a few of those. I’ll be bringing sunglasses too. When packing the rest of my clothes, I try to stick to things in same color palette. This makes mixing and matching super simple. For this trip, I’m taking two pairs of flip flops and three pairs of shoes – sneakers for exercise / walking, casual but dressy shoes (a pair of brown boat shoes), and one fun pair of shoes. These Sperry X Gray Malin slip-ons will be perfect with my color palette.

Since I will be gone for more than a week, I’m packing a large bag, one carry on (a backpack), and a small canvas tote. Once I get to the airport, I’ll check my large bag. For my carry on, I prefer using a stylish backpack. This makes travel so much easier at the airport and when exploring at your destination. It leaves your hands free, and it’s easier on your shoulders. For the plane, I’ll usually unpack my small canvas tote from my backpack and fill it with anything I’ll need during the flight. I have long legs and this frees up precious leg room. The tote also works great at the destination when heading to the pool or beach.

Included among my incidentals is a book. Right now I’m reading Better Than Before by Gretchen Rubin. (It’s been a fantastic read thus far, and I’m hoping to share some thoughts about it next week.) I also have Audible downloaded on my phone and will listen to a book on my drive to the airport, the flight, or if I’m having trouble falling asleep while traveling. Of course, sunscreen is a given, but I also like to bring along after-sun lotion. No matter how much sunscreen I apply, some part of me usually gets burned, and this stuff is heaven sent.

Finally, I always pack a small notebook and my trusty sharpies. This trip is especially important since I want to use some of the time alone to figure out work and life goals. As selfish as it may sound, I need to refocus on what’s important to me without any outside influences. Being mostly disconnected from the world gives me a chance to do that. And since you know I love to share all that weirdly personal stuff here, I’m sure there will be a post about it on my return.

That’s it!

I’ll be heading out soon, so if you have any interest in coming along on this next adventure, be sure to follow along on Instagram and Snapchat at inspiredbycharm. Also, since this is a new type of post for IBC, let me know what you think in the comments below. I love your feedback.
