As you may know, over the past couple of years, my holiday decorating has included a nod to Christmases past. I love vintage Christmas decor! While I was antiquing and thrifting this past summer, I came across lots of old Christmas cards and postcards. Looking at the designs stirred up that special feeling that only Christmas can bring.

I kept those vintage designs in the back of my mind, knowing that I wanted to do something special during the holidays this year. I even purchased a couple of those cards for inspiration.

Fast forward to a few weeks ago when I found some old Christmas gift tags. My first thought: Wouldn’t it’d be fun to combine the two ideas and make Vintage-Inspired Christmas Gift Tags? I’m overjoyed with how the tags turned out. Let me show you.

These Christmas gift tags are available as a free printable to you. There are 16 unique gift tag designs on two sheets. I’ve also included an optional backside that has a place to fill in “to and from”.

  • Nothing says ‘thoughtful’ quite like a handmade touch. By adding these tags to your gifts, you’re giving a piece of your heart, showing your loved ones that you went that extra mile just for them.
  • Who doesn’t love a good freebie? And when it’s as charming and useful as this, it’s a win-win! These tags are my little holiday gift to you, ensuring your presents stand out under the tree.

Materials Needed

  • Downloadable Graphic File: Get started with the heart of this project, which is the vintage-inspired graphic file. You can easily download it HERE.
  • Thick Card Stock Paper: Opt for a sturdy card stock paper like this one, ensuring that your tags are durable and hold up well, especially when tied to those special gifts.
  • Home Printer: Any basic home printer should do the trick. It’s all about turning that digital design into a tangible piece of art.
  • Paper Cutter (or Scissors): Precision is key! A paper cutter will give you those clean, straight edges, but a good old pair of scissors will work just as well.
  • Tacky Glue: This tacky glue will be your best friend when it comes to attaching the glitter. A little goes a long way, and it secures everything in place beautifully.
  • German Glass Glitter: This is where the magic happens. German glass glitter offers a unique, vintage sparkle that really elevates the overall look of your tags. Adding glitter is easy and seems to enhance the vintage look. I used tacky glue and two colors of German glass glitter: gold and silver. German glass glitter is probably my favorite type of glitter. It looks so sparkly and rich.
  • Hole Punch: A simple tool, but essential for creating that small opening at the top of your tag, making it ready for the twine.
  • Twine: Once your tags are all prepped, loop in some colorful twine, which not only secures the tag to the gift but also adds a touch of charm.

How to Make

With all your supplies on hand, you’re ready to make these vintage-inspired Christmas gift tags. I’ll walk you through the easy steps below. I’ve also provided a full supply list and detailed instructions in the printable project card below.

  1. Start by downloading the free printable (click HERE to download), save it to your computer, and print out the tags. If you’re using the “to and from” on the backside, you will need to flip over the paper or use the double-sided option (if available) on your printer to print the back.

  1. Once the tags are printed, cut them out. Use a paper cutter to get nice straight lines. However, scissors will work. You also will need a hole punch to make the hole at the end.
  2. To put on the glitter, put a line of tacky glue on a piece of card stock paper. Very lightly dipped each edge of the tag into the glue.

Once all the edges have glue on them, dip them in the glitter. Set the tag aside to dry.

Because there is quite a variety in the gift tags, I found that some look better with silver glitter and others look better with gold. However, if you only want to buy one type of German glass glitter, (It is a bit pricey.) that would still work. I’ve linked my favorite here.

  1. Once the glitter was dry, run a piece of twine through the hole in each tag. This will allow you to tie the tags onto you packages.

Customization Ideas

I love these tags as they are, but you might want to take them even further. Here are a few ideas to customize your gift tags.

  • Ornament or Jingle Bell: Add a festive touch by tying a small ornament or jingle bell to the tag. Every time the gift is moved, there’ll be a delightful little jingle!
  • Evergreen Embellishment: For a natural, rustic touch, tie on or tuck in a piece of evergreen. It adds a fresh scent and a classic holiday feel to your gift.
  • Stamped Messages: Use rubber stamps to add holiday messages on the back of the tags. Phrases like “Merry & Bright,” “Season’s Greetings,” or “Joy to the World” can add a personal touch.
  • Layered Elements: Attach small items like buttons, fabric patches, or dried flowers to the tags. It’s a simple way to add texture and dimension.
  • Lace or Ribbon Edges: Instead of twine, use delicate lace or colorful ribbon to tie the tags. It can change the whole look and feel of the tag, making it more dainty or vibrant.
  • Photo Memories: Attach a small family photo or a picture of a cherished moment from the past year on the back of the tag. It turns the tag into a keepsake.
  • Washi Tape: This decorative tape comes in so many designs and colors. Use it to create borders, stripes, or other patterns on the tags.

Remember, the sky’s the limit when it comes to customization. These tags are a canvas for your creativity, so let your imagination run wild and make them uniquely yours!
