The Office: The Color Plan

I’m happy to announce that the painting in my office has begun. I’m currently tackling the ceiling, which is probably my least favorite thing to paint. I hope to have it completed in the next couple of days. After that, I’m moving on to the walls, and that should go pretty quickly.

The Office: The Color Plan | Inspired by Charm #31daysofhome

Today, I thought I’d give you a quick look at my color choices and rough design plan. As I mentioned previously, most of the space is staying the same color, but I am changing a few walls.

Before we get to wall color, here is a rough idea of the color and design, including some really random furnishings. The space was inspired by the image of the dining room in the plan. (Unfortunately, I cannot find the source for this image. If anyone has it, please let me know in the comments below.) This image was part of the inspiration for my blog redesign earlier this year, so I thought that it would only be fitting to use it for my office. I’ve always loved the modern meets vintage look with amazing pops of color.

The colors directly behind that image were the colors used to create my blog and will be used as a guide when I’m picking out accessories for my office. The three larger colors directly below the inspiration image are my wall colors.

The majority of the walls will be repainted their current color – Sherwin-Williams Heron Plume.

The large wall opposite my desk area is going to get a little color with Sherwin-Williams Lighter Mint. I already purchased this paint and put a little color swatch on the wall. I think it’s going to really brighten up the space while adding a just a touch of color. I can’t wait to see it on the entire wall.

The area above the fireplace will get a big splash of color with Sherwin-Williams Larchmere. I’m still not sure that this is the best decision, but I’m just going to buy a quart of paint, cross my fingers, and give it a try. If I hate it, it can always be repainted. Right?

The chalkboard wall is going away. For now, I’m just going to paint it Heron Plume until I come up with a plan for it. Ultimately I’m thinking I want this wall to be a gallery of sorts, Floor to ceiling, covered with pictures, artwork, photographs, etc. Kind of like the wall in Joy Cho’s office. With that in mind, I think a neutral backdrop would work best.

I threw a few other elements into my design plan. As I mentioned, I want some sort of sectional sofa. I really like this one form West Elm, but it’s a little out of my budget. The lamp is from Lamps Plus and was part of the fabulous SWAG I received from the BHG event I attended a few weeks ago. Later this week on IBC, you may just have a chance to win a lamp of your choice from their collection as well. Hint. Hint. I’m also obsessed with these chartreuse counter stools from Crate & Barrel. I’m hoping to get three of them for my workstation / craft area. While the color and style is perfect, I’m not sure if they are tall enough or in the budget.

As you may have guessed, there will be some gold / brass details. I also added in my wheel-of-chance to see how it was going to look in the space before I bought it. It’s going to be perfection.

All of the windows will get curtains. I was looking at these from West Elm, but I think they are a tad too busy and dark. I’m thinking about just finding a white curtain (possibly with a subtle pattern) and embellishing them myself. TBD.

So that’s it. What do you think of my plan? Are you as excited as I am to see the finished space?

Hope youl are having a fab weekend!

I love your color choices! How fun! You mentioned a gallery wall – will you be looking for any new art? The reason I ask is because I was just shopping around on etsy for my own home and found an illustrator I like who seems to use a lot of your colors in his work. You may not be interested, but just in case: Good luck with everything!

I’m always looking for new art. There is an empty wall somewhere in this house. Thanks for sharing!

I considered Ikea, but I’m not a huge fan of their furniture. I hoping to have this sofa for a while. I’ll have to check it out though. Thanks!

Love, love, love these light and dark shades of mint/aqua you are going for – excellent choice!

For the curtains you could try white linens with an aqua pom pom trim stitched down the sides to bring a splash of colour, maybe? Can’t wait to see how it turns out! Happy painting 🙂

Hahaha. Shhhh. You’re giving away all my secrets. Let me just say … great minds think alike. 😉

We found your blog via Home Goods on Twitter, and we just love your style! We found your post so inspiring; you have such a lovely sense of color. Those chartreuse stools will be such a fun touch against the seafoam walls. Can’t wait to see it all done!

Looking through your pictures I saw the round walnut table on casters that my sister and I bought this summer at a yard sale. Got a leaf with it too. Ours needs a little cleaning up, light sanding and oiling. It was also missing a caster but I was able to find the exact ones online and bought all four for $7.00! I can’t remember if we paid $80 or $90 but it was a fabulous buy. My twin sister and I are living together in our retirement and slowing trying to get everything the way we want it with limited funds. Anyway it was fun to see ” our” table in your room.

What a great score Cecile! I actually inherited that table when I bought this house. It’s a wonderful piece. I’m not exactly sure how I’m going to use it yet, but it won’t work in this space. Enjoy your piece and congrats on the fab find!

Looks like a fun room!! Drop cloths are cheap and make great curtains that can be stenciled, painted and dyed! Worst case scenario, you have extra drop cloths! ;o)

    • Michael Wurm, Jr. at

Ohh! Great idea Janet. I’ll have to see if that will work for me. Thanks!

As always, I can’t wait to see this come to life in your home! I thought you had mentioned getting sheers at one point, what if you DIY the pattern from the West Elm curtains onto those! It would probably be a little cheaper and you could make them be exactly what you want!

    • Michael Wurm, Jr. at

Good point Jenn. I guess I want something that’s semi-sheer. Haha. I’m so picky. I’m just worried that the pattern is going to be too much. Once I get the curtain rods installed, I’ll be able to actually try a few options. Thanks for the great idea!

I do love me some color. Those bright paint chips make me happy. How about on the chalkboard wall, framing the whole space with wood and having either burlap or a nice print inside. And I was thinking it before I even read it. Make it a creative inspiration board. The whole thing. Frame it out in barn wood maybe. Make it pop. I have had my eye on those lamps at Lamps Plus for quite awhile. Not in the budget. I love all the colors and the shades. And plants. Live pretty plants that freshen the air and clear it of toxins.

    • Michael Wurm, Jr. at

Brenda – that’s a fun idea. That’s going to be my little living room space so I don’t know if I want an inspiration board in there. But it’s definitely something to think about. Thanks so much!!
