I did it! I painted the guest bedroom!
I probably shouldn’t be too celebratory since it took me seven years accomplish this. However, I did reach the goal I set last week, so I’m feeling pretty good.

Goodbye pink. Goodbye wallpaper. Hello bright, light-flooded space!
As I mentioned, I decided to go with Reserved White from Sherwin Williams. The color is so beautiful. I was hoping for something a bit more white, but I do love how it looks. I think the slightly darker hue helps the molding stand out.
The most time-consuming aspect of getting this space painted (which didn’t take all that long) was the prep work. Removing the wallpaper border, patching (and sanding holes), and filling in gaps around the molding always seems to require the most time. While it’s my least favorite part of any painting project, it makes such a difference in the end result. As you’ve probably also discovered, it’s essential for achieving a crisp, clean look.
In addition to painting, I changed the molding around the door to the bathroom. When the house was turned into a B&B, this doorway was created so guests could access this bathroom without leaving their room.
For some reason, the previous owners used standard molding to frame out the door instead of matching the door right next to it. Even though it took a little extra time, I decided that duplicating the original molding was pretty important. In the near future, I will switch out the door to match the other one.
You will also notice a lot less furniture in the room. I decided to remove it all from the space. I plan to sell most of the pieces which came with the purchase of the B&B seven years ago. Although many of them are nice, I just have no emotional attachment to them, and they aren’t what I envision for the space.
That’s about it. This week I want to get the chandelier hung, install new switch plate / outlet covers, and (weather permitting) paint the bed frame. I’ll try to pop in with updates as those progress.

Simply beautiful! Your subtle changes make such a difference creating a light filled, uncluttered space. The new trim was a really smart, thought out move. I really like your skill as a designer. Most anyone can spend bunches of money to create a beautiful home. And you do this so well when need be. Yet, there are few in my experience who can design small, thoughtful upgrades, with limited money poured into the project, and still create a “wow factor” room. Great job, Michael!

Very nice. The color is perfect. I love the contrast between the walls, the windows and doors. It does make it stand out more. I also like the scrolling on the radiator. I love that the room is so crisp and bright. Can’t wait to see what else you have in store for this room. I do love how you decorate each room you have. I save my post for ideas to add to my own space. 🙂
I , so, love the perfect cleanliness and simplicity of the bedroom. You really captured the look , I do hope you reconsider keeping the wider dresser , near the closet door, I think it is fabulous , the way you accessorized the other areas of you house, I am absolutely sure ,that you can make that dresser a great vignette. Congratulation again on this successful transformation.

I too did not notice how beautiful the trim was in the before pics. The wall paper border really drew my eyes away from it. The color is fantastic. The room looks great. I can’t wait to see the rest! Great work!
See, now, I thought you’d be extra proud BECAUSE you finally got it done after seven years! Although a lot of white is not my thing, you managed to use the perfect white for the light the room receives. It’s gorgeous! Can’t wait to see more progress!
Looks gorgeous! The color is similar to what I’ve been painting the rooms in my house. I just love that soft grey with the white trim. And the simplicity of the furnishings is perfect. Have you laid on the bed and reveled in your hard work? I always do that when I finish a room. No? Just me? Alrighty then. 🙂

Hi! This room looks great!! You can never go wrong with white. What direction does your room face? I love this color and am going to consider it to repaint our bathroom and master bedroom. Our master bedroom has windows on the east and north walls which doesn’t result in great light. Thanks!

The simplicity of this room is beautiful. Before I didn’t notice much of the trim and moulding, now it is the first thing you see. The color is perfect, just what I’ve been looking for. Like white, but not quite, just enough to let the trim stand out. Great work, Michael!
