As promised, today’s post is a brief update on the shelf project in my pseudo living room. Not that there is really much new, but I did get the brackets hung. Baby steps. For those of you who have never hung shelves, this is probably the easiest way. Well, unless you can get a shelf with brackets already attached. Anyway, after a lot research and stress, I decided on these brackets from True Value. I just ordered them online. I played around with the idea of doing some sort of floating shelves, but ultimately decided I wanted a bit of bracket bling. I think it makes the shelves a little more interesting. I also knew I wanted five shelves in this area, or so I thought.

After some tedious calculations I figured out where I wanted each shelf on the wall. Using a level, I penciled in where I would be drilling all of my holes. I triple checked all of my measurements to be sure everything was level. I started from the bottom and worked my way up. After the first shelf, Sebastian came by to inspect my work and do a little yoga. I think this is the downward facing cat.

Because I’m impatient and need to see how things look, I cut the wood for each shelf as I worked my way up. The wood I’m using is basic 2 x 10 x 10″ pine boards. I actually had these on hand when I accidentally bought the wrong size boards for my dining room shelves.

Anyway, once I finally installed the fourth set of brackets, I stood back to check out things were coming along. To my surprise I really liked just the four shelves. The placement of the top shelf gave me room for bigger decorative pieces and artwork. So I channeled my inner Christopher Lowell and ran around the house grabbing a few tchotchkes to see how things would look.

This whole time I was envisioning five shelves. Who knew four would be even better!? I just love when stuff like that happens.

My plan for this weekend is to get all four pieces of wood sanded and stained. I’m using a color that matches my hardwood floors and some of the other piece in the room. I usually prefer painted wood, so I’m really hoping I like how the shelves turn out once they are stained. We shall see. I will report back next week.

I also wanted to let you know that today is the start of my annual gift shoppe switchover! Yes, next week is the beginning of November and folks are already asking when I’m putting out the Christmas merchandise in my shoppe. If you’d like, you are welcome to follow along with my adventures.

Updates will be on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. You can follow along via #makingofachristmasshoppe. I’ll be posting pictures, ideas, thoughts, and other fun and completely random things. I’m sure I’ll need your advice along the way so please chime in with comments, replies, repins, and retweets!

And that’s all folks! Have a fantastic weekend!

Oh, yes… were right with the brackets. Staining the shelves will be the perfect touch. And the 4 shelves look great. And speaking of Christopher Lowell – where has he been? I loved his shows.

We recently did shelving (with brackets) in our bathroom and living room. In both areas I chose to stain them. I, like you, was unsure if I would like the final result as I my first inclination was to paint them. How did it turn out? I LOVE the stained wood! I mean really L-O-V-E it! So glad I made that choice. I can’t wait to see your shelves and I have a feeling your going to love the stained look too!

Michael – this is looking so great. I love shelves from floor to ceiling like this. And you have a gift for styling. I don’t have that gift. Can’t wait to see this all come together.

I am so glad you showed this. I’ve looked at those same brackets for the same application in our family room. I always thought it might look cheap, but it doesn’t! Very classic and chic. Just what I want! 🙂 thanks!
