These DIY Pegboard Kitchen Storage Ideas will have your kitchen looking beautiful while keeping it functional.

Sometimes when I’m working on a project, I think to myself, “What in the heck am I doing? My to-do list is a mile long and the month has just started, I feel overwhelmed with how much I have to do.” And then, all of the sudden, I get this notion for a new project. Temporarily abandoning my massive to-do list, I find myself covered in paint with another area of my house torn up. And, since I started this one new project, I end up putting more things on my to-do list. Can anyone relate?

However, when the project is finally complete, I’m overjoyed with the results and wonder how I could live any other way.

So, here I am today in my kitchen (which I rarely show because it’s not the most amazing space), completely changing things around. Here’s what happened. I’m part of the Lowe’s Creative Blogger Team, and this month’s challenge was kitchen organization. Usually, I’m horribly late posting for Lowe’s which makes me feel terrible about myself, so I wanted to get my act together this month. I needed to make the 45-minute trek to Lowe’s this week for a few other things, and when I was there, out of the blue I got this idea for pegboard storage. I knew this was the project I needed to do, and that I needed to do it today. (Now, my project is only a day late. Baby steps.)

Four years ago (when I was a bit more into rustic / junk decor), I had the great idea to turn these crates I’d found in my basement into shelves in my kitchen. Since then, my style has evolved, and I’ve grown tired of the crates. I decided a change was in order. I decide to make create a pegboard kitchen storage area.

So, while on my shopping adventure at Lowe’s, I picked up a piece of pegboard (which happened to be the perfect size) and some pegboard accessories.

I wanted the pegboard to be white, so I gave it a coat of primer. Then I finished it off with a bright white trim paint.

I also picked up a couple little packages of peg board accessories. Thankfully, they included screws and spacers for hanging the board on my wall. Easy.

I decided to get three of these gray baskets as well. As you will see in a moment, I gave them a new look with a quick coat of spray paint.

After lots of cleaning, accessorizing, and some more painting, I have a brand new peg wall of organization! Let’s check it out.

So much better, right? It’s bright. It’s clean. It’s happy. And now I’m happy.

As you can see, the little baskets got a makeover. Valspar’s Rosy Cheeks spray paint gave them the perfect amount of pretty.

The baskets were filled with things I’m always reaching for when in the kitchen: salt, pepper, and little dishes. I also tucked in a plant because every styled space needs a touch of nature.

Other hooks were used to hang measuring cups and spoons. I like two sets of measuring cups, especially when baking. One set is for dry ingredients; the other is for wet. Very convenient.

I also used a screwdriver organizer for some cooking tools my Mom got for me. Love that.

Across the top of the pegboard is a 1x4x8 board I cut to size. The stain color is Provincial. This shelf provides storage for things I don’t use as frequently but like to display.

Since organization can also be pretty, I added a frame with a “cheeky” postcard I picked up in Ireland.

And to tie this whole area together, I changed around the art on the opposite wall. I had a basic white frame on hand, and I spray painted a portion of it black. Inside the frame is this artwork I found here. “Throw kindness around like confetti.” It’s a great little reminder to have in a space I use so much.

I also did a little cupboard organization and made room for some kitchen gadgets that were previously sitting on the counter collecting dust.

And that’s it! For a project that wasn’t even on my to-do list, I think it’s both cute and functional. Plus, it’s a much better reflection of where my design taste is these days.

  1. Just the inspiration I need. Had in mind to do this in my new very small kitchen and was not sure what it might look like. On my way I will have to turn the peg board vertical because of limited space and I wanted to put it in a frame. May have changed my mind about that after see the shelf on top. Also would Lowe’s cut the pegboard to the size I needed-have limited space.

  2. Hi – love this post and think the pegboard looks awesome in your kitchen. I was wondering if you could tell me how your West Elm cooking tools are holding up? Do they stain since they are white? I haven’t been able to find an online review! Thanks so much!!

    1. No at all. The accessory kit comes with screws and spacers that go between the wall and the board. You just screw it into place. It’s quite simple.

      1. Thank you!! This is the cutest thing ever and I’ve been looking for something for kitchen storage that actually looks awesome in my small space!! Thanks for sharing 🙂

      2. I’m planning to cover portion of a wall from ceiling to baseboards. Do you recommend using anchors? o they come with the spaces and screws or should I get the white plastic ones that screw into the wall then your mounting screws go into the anchor? I’m not planning to hang anything of any weight, but I’m not sure I trust my wallboard (cheap, corner cutting guy built these condos).

  3. Love it, Michael! I actually bought pegboard for kitchen storage this month too (it’s still propped up in my dining room). My plan for it didn’t work out (space issue) so I went with Plan B (furniture makeover). Your project turned out awesome!

  4. I saw the pegboard and cringed. This is exactly what was in my farmhouse when I purchased it in 1974. Only it was avocado green, not white. Same hooks. And I hated it. Things I did not use daily would get dusty, and the shelf I had became filthy with greasy kitchen dust. It became a chore to keep everything clean. And what lurked behind the pegboard on the wall, I do not what to know. This is a recycled idea from the late 60’s and it was a bad idea then.

    1. Thanks for your input Kathleen! Good thing this isn’t your kitchen then. However, I’m up for the challenge of keeping it clean and I think it looks wonderful in my space. If Julia Childs could pull it off, I think I can too. Ha! 🙂

  5. I LOVE what you’ve done. All of it! And it’s genius how you’ve made the pink work in there. One of my favorite aspects of your project is the addition of that shelf on top. Also adore the asymmetry of the black pain on the frame. : )

  6. I love it. Many years ago I had pegboard in my kitchen. Now that I have plans to move into a tiny apartment next year I’m thinking I will revisit this idea. Pinned so I won’t forget. xo Laura

  7. hi, this is exactly what I want to do in my small kitchen. What type of screws did you use so that there was a space between the wall and the pegboard? Is it just rubber washers, or a special pegboard screw?
    thanks!

    1. Angela, as I mentioned in the post, there were screws and spacers included in the hardware kit I bought. However, I’ve seen people use standard screws with a stack of washers as a spacer.

      Hope that helps. 🙂

      1. I tried something similar to use in a craft room but I did not get the spacing correct from the wall to the back of the pegboard. I’ve since moved to a mobile home with a terrible uneven kitchen wall. I have the pegboard in storage and will do this. We don’t have a Lowe’s close by so what I need is that measurement and I’m off!

  8. This looks fabulous. I too, never thought of a shelf above the pegboard! I didn’t even think of painting my pegboard!! I also LOVE the kindness quote and your fan. I have an old fan, shaped like that, is there a place I can get a cool stainless, shiney cover similar to yours?

    1. Thank you so much Laurie. The fan in my kitchen is from Lowe’s. I bought it about 4 years ago, so I’m not sure if it’s still available.

    2. Perhaps you could thoroughly clean your current cover to remove any hint of grease and CAREFULLY spray it with a metallic silver paint. Or cover it with a silver contact paper? I saw a project somewhere a few minutes ago that referred to gold contact paper from Amazon. Maybe you can find silver there or at Lowe’s or Home Depot.

  9. Holy cow!!! Love it! The peg board inspiration transformed your kitchen corner in the nicest way. It’s visually pleasing and gives you easy access to the things you use the most. Its so nice to change things up as your taste and style evolve. Bravo!

  10. It looks great, I love it! Love the idea of putting a shelf on the pegboard and when I saw it thought “Now why didn’t I think of that for the pegboard in our garage!” lol Wonderful idea.

    1. That’s quite the compliment. And it’s so funny, I didn’t even think about Julia Child until after people started mentioning her. I just adored her kitchen.

    2. Years before Julia hung her kitchen on pegboard (no offense) my grandfather had every hand tool n his machine shop hanging on pegboard covered walls with each item outlined in big black magic marker so everything was always put away in its proper place. I always loved his system. Then after I saw Julia’s kitchen on TV years ago, I knew I wanted to hang my truly tiny condo kitchen and bought a sheet of white pegboard. I haven’t hung it yet, but if I can’t get to it soon, I’ll enlist the aid of a couple really great Eagle Scouts I know to do it for me and pay them with a lunch or dinner.

  11. i love the way your kitchen pegboard organization turned out! i signed up at Lowes Creative Ideas for their free Creative Ideas Magazine about a year ago, and love getting it in the mail.
    you have a wonderful kitchen!
