Office Updates

Happy Monday, friends! It’s been months since I’ve had you all in my office space, so I figured today we could quickly pop in and check out what’s new. Although there haven’t been any major changes, I did get a new rug, so things are looking different and more pulled together.

Since I first turned this room from gift shop to living room / office, the area with my workstation has always felt incomplete. I think it was because there was too much wood and not enough color.

That got me thinking about adding a rug beneath the desk and stools. When I stumbled upon this Painter’s Cotton and Wool Rug in midnight blue from WestElm, I knew it would be the perfect addition to the space. Not only does in break up all of the wood, but it adds color and softness that was previously missing from this area. What do you think?

I’m digging it.

To make matters even better, the rug was crazy cheap – under $150. I liked it so much, that I picked up a smaller rug in same color for the front entry. Perfect, right?

I also gave my vintage pick dresser a fresh coat of paint. Previously, it had a bunch of nicks and peeling paint. While I can appreciate a rustic look, it just wasn’t working in this room. Sherwin Williams Rosy Outlook was the perfect match. Some sanding and swipes of a brush gave the dresser a fresh and updated look.

In other office-related news, I finally got handles for my sliding barn doors. I searched a while for the perfect option and ended up ordering handles from the place where I purchased the doors. Go figure!

The handles definitely give the doors a more finished look and make them much easier to open and close.

I’m pleased with how this entry to my office is coming along, but something about it still feels off. I’m not sure if it’s the table, the rug, the lack of decor, or something else entirely. I’ve tried a bunch of different options, but I just can’t get anything to work the way I’d like. I think I’m going to need to bring in the professionals. Haha.

Anyway, those are my office updates. (I told you it wasn’t much.) I am still amazed at how much a rug can change a space. What little touches have made a big difference in your home?

Have a great week, everyone!

I love the paint on the office walls. What is it?

Hi! I’m considering a rattan hanging chair in our sunroom, but I’m afraid to bite the bullet on it. Can you direct me to a post which discusses your chair? If there isn’t one, can you tell me where it’s from and whether you feel that it’s stable and comfy? Thank you!

The table in the entryway seems too small and brown. The arrangement on top of it is gorgeous, but the scale of it seems to overwhelm the table. I like the barstools, but somewhere else! Maybe Lucite would be the way to go to show off the rug even more! Other than that, the room is perfect!

Thanks for your input Margaret! Lucite stools? Or a Lucite table? Thanks!!

I like how the white seeps through the blue on the rug. I actually like the legs on the bar stools. It breaks up all the straight lines on everything else. As for the entry hall, I think that you need to change the round table. Paint it or something. I think that you have wonderful taste. You decorate everything so beautifully.

  • Kathy T at

I have searched your blog unsuccessfully for a mention of the lighting fixture in your entrance (the hanging light bulbs.) Please tell me more about it!
I also agree with the bar stool comments above, something a little less ornate might look better.
Enjoy your work so much, and I love the way you wait for just the right pieces to come along instead of settling for the “meh” solutions!

I love watching you bring your space together. Your office is looking great. I think the stools may indeed be the reason it feels “off” to you. An easy fix though and think how much fun you’ll have shopping! I love the round table as is. The warmth of the wood offsets the black hardware of the doors. Maybe a darker rug underneath would give a more grounded feeling if you feel it needs it. However, I love it like it is!

  • Candice at

I hesitate to suggest anything – your home is gorgeous! But, I feel a need to add a black graphic to the barn doors. Something simple, like a large numeral on each.

  • TidyMom at

oh I love the rug!! I have a space that’s too much wood and not enough color …..going to have to check out that rug, because I just pulled up the jute rug I had in there, because I realized it was just adding to the lack of color.

  • Gayle at

My 2 cents…The room is great overall. Agreed on above comment…the bar stools are off. The legs of the stools are too busy…too much cross-bracing in addition to too many curves on the legs. Then, putting the stools next to each other…the visual is a game of pick-up sticks. AND…the bar stools are white…which is a contrast to the rug, and a contrast to the table…which means they stand out more than anything. The room has more than enough (better) focal points…the bar stools are their own focal point and not in a good way.

Metal or wicker would be a better choice in the long run.

Love watching how your rooms develop.

What colour are your walls? I absolutely love them!

  • Colleen at

Your home is beautiful! Thank you so much for sharing. I think the above stool suggestions are very good and would pad make a huge difference. And, I think the round table in the entrance is the wrong color. Love the round shape but it should be much darker to feel more grounded.

  • Sara at

What about painting/staining the stools darker to make the center workstation more cohesive/grounded?

  • Beth of designPOST interiors at

I love the rug- blue always makes things better! I think the room looks awesome but maybe a touch of brass would add the finishing touch?!

  • Brittney at

I love your entire house! The colors work so well together, I need your help with mine (everything is white and beige, blah)…Anyway, maybe try switching out the stools for something more industrial? I think a bright colored tolix stool would make such a statement 🙂 whatever you do will be fabulous, I’m sure!

What about painting the round table a navy blue. It would create a pop in the entry way and
tie in with your new rug in the office. I painted my dining room table purple. 🙂 Helen
