My New Dining Room Table

Well I finally got a new dining room table! (Although technically it’s probably not considered new anymore.) You may have gotten a few glimpses of it here and here, but I’ve never officially showed it to you. So here it is!

Today is also your lucky day because I didn’t even take the time to clean up my makeshift office area or fix up my Ode to Oz display.

Anyway, when I bought this house four years ago, the dining room table came with it. While that table functioned well, it wasn’t lovely to look at.The top was completely destroyed, so it always had to be covered with a tablecloth. As much as I love a cute tablecloth, I didn’t really like it for everyday.

After trying to decide on a table for quite some time, I ultimately chose this one from Pottery Barn. I considered hunting for a vintage gathering table or having something custom made, but decided that getting a new table just made sense. I love vintage and antique pieces, butI really didn’t want to deal with another damaged top or a table that leans or rocks. Do you know what I mean?  This new table gives me that vintage, weathered look without any of the hassle. Perfect!

So far I’m just loving it! I haven’t had the chance to play around with centerpieces, place settings, or table runners (other than the one I recently made), but I’m working on it. I’m so excited to style this sucker for Christmas!

I tried to take some pictures from a variety of angles to give you an idea of the location of my dining room.

As you can see in the photos above and below, the dining room connects to the Gift Shoppe, which previously was the main living room. There are pocket doors that separate the spaces when needed. The front of the house is to the right. The front door is also to the right just beyond the pocket doors. .

My kitchen is to the left, as you can see in the picture below. The back door is to the left of the three plates hanging in the kitchen. My hens and chicks wall planter is hung just outside the back door.

I also have this fabulous built-in that is original to the house. (My house was constructed in 1917.)

I hope that gives you a better idea of the layout of my home. If you also look at the pictures of my hall in Tuesday’s post, you should be able to figure out the entire first floor plan. Basically, with all the doors open, you could walk in a big circle.

As I mentioned in an earlier post, I was going to also ask you for advice on chairs. Yesterday morning, however, I made a decision and ordered some. Right now, I’m using chairs I had, but it’s kind of a hot mess. I just couldn’t take it anymore.

I’m still looking for two somewhat formal, cushioned head chairs to replace the white Windsor-style chairs. For the other four chairs (currently the directors chairs). I ordered these black wishbone chairs from Overstock. It actually took me quite a long time to decide on the chairs. Did I want themto be all the same style? Did I want formal or casual? Dark or light? It was murder! I ultimately fell in love with these black wishbone chairs and I’m hoping they look perfect. I took it as a good sign when I spotted the original Hans J. Wegner chair in the October issue of Real Simple. One Wegner chair was priced at $849; I paid almost $200 less for all four of mine. Score!

So that’s my table. Finally. What do you think?

I love the new table! I think you’re totally right about buying a new one. Un-level, rocking tables are the worst! The chairs you ordered are perfect too and what a STEAL!

It’s great when you can buy something and fix it up or get a deal on Craig’s list, but sometimes it’s nice to have something brand new, isn’t it? It’s gorgeous. And I am mad for those wishbone chairs. I can’t wait to see how you like them.

You’ve done a great job, Michael. I love how the wall shelves turned out, too. The table looks like you’ll have it for many years to come, and the chairs should look awesome with it! The whole dining room looks wonderful … you have quite a nice touch!!

I love the new “old” Table. I know exactly what you mean about living with antiques and vintage. I think you made the right choice.

I know there is not a close Home Goods to St Mary’s, but they always have gorgeous and just the right size upholstered chairs.

I love the look of your dining room but I’m not going to lie: as a new blog reader my eyes immediately zeroed in on the YHL book! 😉 I think I will fit in well here. 😀
