My New Couch is Here!

Well, after waiting almost two months, my couch is FINALLY here. (I really shouldn’t be calling it a couch though. Technically, it’s a sectional.) Regardless of what I call it, it’s here and I love it.

In case you are wondering, this is the Henry Sectional from West Elm in Dove Gray Performance Velvet. I am so pleased with how it looks in the space. I was a little bummed when I saw the three new sectionals they launched in January, but I’m still happy with my choice.

As you can see. the shape of the sofa allows it to fit beautifully in this odd little corner. I plan to do something fun with end tables on both sides. I’m also on the hunt for a coffee table.

To be honest, my search for a coffee table has caused me some tossing and turning. (Not literally, but you get what I mean.) I’m in love with this large square one from Wisteria. However, I’m not thrilled with the price tag and I’m also worried it may be a bit too big. I have decided to swap out the entertainment stand and the TV so that I can bring my larger TV into this space. The new entertainment stand may eat up a little more floor space. I like having at least one extra option for seating, and although the red chair is temporary, an additional chair may not fit with such a large side table. Whew. Sorry, I was thinking out loud.

So, what I may end up doing is making a fake coffee table similar in size out of cardboard and seeing how things fit. Haha. Crazy, yes. But it will help me avoid spending money on a coffee table that is way too big.

Anyway, back to the sectional. When I was in Portland, I stopped at the West Elm there and like a weirdo, sat on every sofa. As I’ve mentioned before, I live in a pretty small town, so I knew that I wouldn’t find a piece of furniture locally to suit my taste. So I planned ahead and tested out things when I got to Portland. It was essential that this couch be both stylish and super comfortable. It’s a winner in both departments. Plus since it’s 6’1″ long, it allows me to stretch out completely. I love that! I also ordered samples from West Elm of all the fabric options I thought could work. I placed all of the samples against my wall color and floor color to see how each would look in the mix. Coincidentally, the Dove Gray is even a perfect match for one of the grays in my carpet. I love those happy little design accidents.

I’m so thankful I did this research because buying a huge sectional online could be very nerve-racking.

I’m also insanely happy the cats are a fan. Cause obviously that’s super important.

Slowly but surely this space is coming together. I wish I was able to just show you the before and after shots immediately, but that’s obviously not practical. I also think it’s somewhat helpful to see that design takes time. I am honestly baffled by how people can make over a room in a weekend. Besides, I like taking my time, trying things, and exploring the possibilities!

New Couch | Inspired by Charm

I’m off to enjoy a busy weekend. I’m heading to ALT Summit in Salt Lake City next week. (Anyone else?) so this weekend will involve a lot of planning, prepping, and post writing to make up for the days I’ll be gone. Despite the frenzy, I’m uber excited for the trip and the conference.

What’s on your weekend agenda?

New couch looks beautiful! glad the cats are liking it. I think that is a great idea to use a box to figure out what size of coffee table you need. I didn’t buy one (no room); just opted for an upholstered ottoman. Enjoy your weekend!

Hopefully it works out. It’s tough buying things online. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Hi! I love your blog and your pinterest. Actually been following your pinterest for a year or two and just found your blog when I was researching sofas. This is a super important question: DO THE CATS SCRATCH THAT COUCH? I have gone thru 3 crate and barrel sofa that my cats have destroyed. How does the west elm performance velvet hold up? Thank you so much!!!

        • Lauren at

I wanna know if the cats do any damage to the velvet too! I’ve heard velvet is perfect for cats because it’s not a surface that claws easily scratch into!

Also! I’d love to know how you keep your rug and target poufs cat hair free! Mine are COVERED in cat hair all the time! Oh, and I would love a sneak peek on how you keep your litter hid away and tidy!

        • Michael Wurm, Jr. at

          Laura –

So far so good. However, my cats have no front claws so that probably makes a big difference. They don’t really cause any damage to things around the house. I do still love my sofa and the fabric has held up wonderfully.

Hey Michael- i’m thinking about purchasing the same couch from West Elm. How has it held up?

        • Nicky Todd at

          Hi Eli

I purchased one and it has not worn well at all. 6 months later the seat cushions are flat and the back cushions are lumpy. The couch is more comfortable without the sofa’s back cushions – I use my own smaller ones. I am normal height and height and work 5 days a week, so only sit on it during the evening. I also live alone and rarely have people over.

I called West Elm and they said the foam is recycled (was not made aware of this when I bought it) and what they see from my photos it’s normal wear and tear. It’s not, they just won’t stand by their product.

I’m going to get new cushion inserts from a local upholsterer tomorrow. I’d suggest skipping if you haven’t already bought it. I also see now that you get what you pay for with couches and 1200 for a couch – it’s going to wear poorly.

        • Michael Wurm, Jr. at

I’m still very happy with my purchase. I’ve had mine for three years now. To me, it’s as good as the day I bought it. (Check out some of my home tours, I think it still look the same.) The cushions do need fluffing now and again, but I don’t mind. It take a minute.

Maybe they are making them differently now, but I honestly have no complaints.

          xo Michael

Love the living room! What color did you paint the walls? I have the West Elm Henry loveseats in the dove grey performance velvet. Currently the living room is all decorator’s white (BM).

  • Nikki @ Tikkido at

Gorgeous! I’m on the hunt for a new couch as well, and the one you’ve chosen is exactly the kind I’m looking for. My design crush is official. My girls+dog have done truly disgusting things to couch; does the performance velvet feel reasonably durable?

    • Michael Wurm, Jr. at

Nikki – so far it seems great. I guess time will tell.

LOVE the couch! Your research paid off….it looks great, as does the whole room! I would put the tv, and everything else in place first, and then put the cardboard table in place to see if it’s too big. I had a big square coffee table that didn’t quite fit in my space for years. It drove me insane. And besides, why did I need such a big table in such a little room? I was so glad when I finally got rid of it.

    • Michael Wurm, Jr. at

I know. That’s what I’m afraid of. Thanks for the advice!

Love your new “sectional” LOVE your new room! All of the bright fun colors are amazing. I wish I had your patience when it comes to decorating. I’m a want it done now kind of person and then I regret it later. :o( I have a sectional also and opted to use 4 leather foot stools that open so that I could use them for storage, foot rest, table top and pull them apart for additional seating if needed. I like your idea of using cardboard to create a visual for a coffee table. I think it will be super beneficial for you.

  • TracyG at

I love the room! The couch looks great and I LOVE the pop of turquoise wall. I like the coffee table you have, just because it fits and it’s different, but the cardboard cut out is a great idea.

  • Elle at

It looks so comfy! Love your “kitty pillows.” They’re are the best accessory:)

    Michael –

I want you to know that I enjoy your posts immensely. My eyes soak up every detail in your photos and I marvel at your sense of style, down to the littlest detail. Your home is so warm and inviting, like welcoming open arms.

I especially loved your Christmas tree pictures and posts.

Your couch is perfect. The red chair …it has the feel of a respected and loved elderly relative watching over the home-fires. I love it in this room.

The way the rug ties it all together — beautiful!

Throw as many pics at me as you like ….I enjoy every one. 🙂

  • Chris at

LOVE the new sectional. It fits the space wonderfully. I also LOVE LOVE LOVE the rug. Where did you get that? It would be perfect for my living room. I’ve never seen anything like it.

    • Kate at

Hi Michael – I too love this rug! Any chance you can let me know where it was from? Thanks, Kate x

  • Jeanette at

It fits perfectly! Your cats approve…and I approve of your cats 🙂

    • Michael Wurm, Jr. at

Hahaha. Perfect! It’s odd how much I value their opinion. I could be verging on crazy cat man.

I love the new sectional and I also love the coffee table you have. My cats love our new sofa too, someday I may get to stretch out on it.

Your couch looks so cozy. And the cat looks cozy on there too. Your house is to flawless, with too kids, I am not sure if I can get my house a flawless as yours…AMAZING!

  • Monica at

your room is coming together beautifully! Hooray for “slow decorating” … and for snuggly, cute cats! (And for being able to keep the furniture unclawed!)

Hi Michael! I just today discovered your blog over at Pinterest and decided to stop by because I noticed you were from PA. Me too, I live in Center City. Great blog you have here. I love the design – friendly, warm and inviting. I read your post below (the one about the song Roar) and laughed because about two months ago, I wrote a post about that song on my blog and said the same as you – obsessed with the encouraging message. I literally could not stop listening to it after I first heard it.

Great-looking couch. Love the color. Goes perfect with the area rug. Also, I love the accent color on that one wall.

Anyway, nice to meet you. Have a great weekend.

    • Michael Wurm, Jr. at

Nice to meet you too! Thanks so much for following along.

Love your new sectional. It fits the space so well. Have you looked at the Chase coffee table from Target. It has a similar look to the one from Wisteria but is rectangular and less than $250. It may give you the look you want with a better fit.

  • Terri at

Michael… your so creative, I think you should up-cycle the coffee table you have to model the one you want…just need a metal frame for the base and you could sand the top of the table you have and give it the finish you desire, you already know that the table you have fits in the space and it would look amazing, reusing what you have, be a little rustic and it would be a desirable one of kind piece… if your up for a project.

    • Michael Wurm, Jr. at

Thanks Courtney! I really like this coffee table too, but I was imagining a square. Something to think about. Thank you!!

    Hi Michael,
The sectional is perfect! Have you seen the Ikea hack coffee table that Kate at Centsational Girl build this week? It would be perfect with your sectional and she even used a weathered grey stain on the top. Have a safe trip and enjoy your week

    • Michael Wurm, Jr. at

Thanks for the tip. I love Kate, but I missed her coffee table. I’ll have to check it out.

Michael, I love your new sectional, it’s just beautiful! You must tell me how that velvet fabric fares with the cats and their hair. I have the Pottery Barn “Greenwich” sofa, chair, and ottoman in the microfiber suede and so far it’s been good as far as cleaning up cat hair, but they have also used it as a scratching post (bad kitties!) and I need to get it reupholstered. I’m thinking of a velvet, but am concerned the cat hair would stick and not be able to be vacuumed up as readily as it is with the microsuede.

As far as your coffee table, what about using two smaller square (or “cube”) tables instead of one large square or rectangular table? That way you could position them so you could walk between them and not have one large piece blocking traffic flow. Just a thought. Here are some ideas:||NoFacet-_-NoFacet-_–_-||NoFacet-_-NoFacet-_–_-

    • Michael Wurm, Jr. at

Wow! Thanks for all the links! As of right now any kitty hairs seem to vacuum off nicely. I’ll provide an update here once I’ve had the sectional for a while with a more through review.

Absolutely love the new couch. I was at West Elm this weekend looking for couches. I decided on the Henry, just not sure if I want another sectional or not.. They are comfortable, yet chic! Also added this rug to my design board. I’m in love! Great post. I launched a blog a few weeks back, would love if you checked it out!

    Have a great day,

  • Krystal at

Hi! Absolutely love it! I have been hovering on buying a new couch. Soooooo very much need a new one ( almost embarrassed to have anyone over ) but I have two dogs that shed. Knowing you have cats how good/bad is velvet?

    • Michael Wurm, Jr. at

Krystal – so far, so good. Any hair comes up pretty easily with my vacuum.

Ran across your site from a link from Young House Love, then I saw the sofa, (gorgeous!) and the cats (I’m a cat lady myself!) and well now I’m a blog follower!

Seriously love your blog. I have this same sectional in my home, had it a little over a year and it is going strong. Your living area is exactly what i am going for in my own home! I think the rug really ties it all together beautifully.

How would a round table fit? I see your round table on the side. Is it too big for the space? If not and you are ready to change it, you could shorten the stand and have a coffee table instead. BTW I just love love that rug…makes the room!

  • Matt at

So the wife is driving me crazy trying to find the blue color you have on the wall. The local stores do not have a color which is so pure. can you tell me the color name and brand so I can satisfy her need for a colored wall

  • Lisa at

I can’t tell you how much I LOVE your blog and your style, or how timely this post was for me. I’ve been hunting for a sofa since March (it’s now July), and for whatever reason, this post has never come up in any of my searches until this week – but I’m SO glad it did!

The West Elm Henry Sofa has been at the top of my list since the beginning of my search – in part because I, too, have cats that I want to be comfy (and not tear up the sofa fabric with their claws, ahem!) – but certain things have made me hesitate about it. Your post makes me feel a lot better about the sofa, but I still wonder about durability, comfort (I fell in love with another sofa in the same price range that I swear is the Most. Comfortable. Sofa. Ever.), and warranty. When I called West Elm to find out what sort of warranty they provide, I was basically told there just isn’t one.

What’s your experience of this sofa now that you’ve had it for about 6 months? Is cat hair still vacuuming up nicely? Are the cushions holding up (or flattening/sagging)?

    • Erin at

      Hi Michael!
I love your blog! And I am also interested in the same questions! How are the kitties treating the couch? and how is it looking these days? Thank you so much! This post has been so helpful.

can you tell me where you got your rug. I have been searching on line for over a month and can not locate one like. please reply…

Your blog is amazing! I wish you could come and decorate our new house for us! You have such great style and I love the way the Henry Sectional looks in your place. We ordered the same one too, only in Linen Weave Steel Gray, and it just arrived this morning. I am so disappointed with it as each of the three pieces is a slightly different shade of gray and it is REALLY noticeable. Glad you had better luck with yours!

I am so so so soso desperate to know where this colourful triangle rug is from, it would make my living area. Please advise me
    Thank you

Your living room couldn’t be any cuter! The sectional fits perfectly, it matches the length of the wall just right. Your use of color is amazing! The red, yellow, and blue stand out so well against the light gray of the couch.

  • Holly at

I’ve been on a quest trying to find this rug!!! Please spill!

It was from, however I believe they no longer carry it.

The couch matches perfectly with the rest of the room! I love the way it fits perfectly against the wall, it’s the perfect length. Also, you chose darling pillows to put on there! The bright colors look so fresh against the gray material.

  • Dusty at

I am glad I ran across this blog because it is so hard to find reviews for West Elm! I just bought this sectional. How has it been holding up? Have the back cushions starting sagging or are they still firm? Has the material held up to your cats?

    • Christine at

Hi! So glad I came across this post. Now that it’s been a year since your purchase how is the couch holding up?

  • Beth at

How has the sofa held up? We’re in the market for a new couch and are looking at one of the WE Henry styles (2-piece sectional). I’m so leery of buying furniture online and we’ve had mixed experiences with WE…but LOVE the Henry. Just frustrated because I can’t find reviews anywhere.

    • Eli at

Hey Beth- have you heard anything about the WE Henry? I’m wondering if I should invest…

  • Elizabeth Carter at

Hi there! I have a super strange question regarding your Henry sectional. Did you have any trouble fitting it inside your door? My door is only 35″ across and the couch says 36″. I have already purchased it so I’m a nervous wreck. I’m hoping I can turn it on it’s side and go through that way maybe without cushions and the feet. I thought I had a normal sized door frame but maybe not. Thank you!

    • Allison at

Hi Elizabeth, how did things work out? I’m in the exact same situation – have a 35″ wide doorway, and am nervous about pulling the trigger on ordering the couch. Did it end up fitting through yours? Thanks!

  • Marisa at

I’d also love to know how the Henry is holding up after a year! Just looked at the chaise sofa in store and would love some honest feedback 🙂

  • Janeen Sopata at

    Hi Michael,

I too bought the Henry in Dove Gray (sight unseen). Can you tell me if the color is a true gray. Hard to tell on an iPad. Very nervous that it is more taupe than gray. So glad I found your page

    Janeen Sopata

    • Michael Wurm, Jr. at

It’s definitely a cooler gray. Not taupe at all. Hope that helps your nerves.
