Meet Frankie

Say hello to Frankie!

Yes, my friends, I’ve welcomed a new kitty into my life and home. This news won’t come as a surprise to those of you who follow me on Instagram (I’ve already shared a few pictures of him there.), but I thought Frankie also deserved a post on IBC.

As you may know, I already had two cats: Sebastian and Jax. I adopted Sebastian as a kitten when I moved into my first apartment after college. Jax joined us about a year later. This year, Sebastian will turn 14, and Jax will be 13. It’s hard to believe they are that old and have lived in six different apartments/houses with me.

Having cats in my home is such a joy for me. As a single person, I like their companionship, and I’ve always been perfectly content with just two cats. To me, that’s the ideal number. I’ve also been blessed with two really great cats. I especially love that Sebastian and Jax are very close and can often be found snuggled together or cleaning each other’s heads.

However, since Sebastian and Jax are older, and I’m now settled in my current home, I recently decided to open myself to the idea of another cat. I wouldn’t actively seek another cat, but if one should find me, I’d be open to providing it a home. That way, in case something happened to Sebastian or Jax, the surviving cat would still have a companion, and so would I.

Rewind to a couple weeks before Christmas: My blogger friend Julia of Cuckoo 4 Design tagged me on an Instagram post. A cute little cat named Frankie was found living under the porch of a house here in Pittsburgh. He was being cared for by a kind couple who unfortunately couldn’t keep him. They were looking to find him a home for Christmas.

I wrote them an email expressing my interest in adopting Frankie, and from all the emails they received, they picked me to take Frankie. Fun fact: the husband has been following me on Pinterest for years!

It seemed like Frankie was destined to be in my life, so here he is!

Because I wanted to make sure that all the cats got along, there needed to be a trial period. If for some reason, things didn’t work out, the couple told me they would be willing to find Frankie another home.

Naturally, when any new cat joins a family, there is a bit of caution and adjustment on everyone’s part. However, in just a few days, all the cats seemed to be getting along.

I hope this doesn’t border on too much information, but in his early days at Bayberry House, Frankie had urinary issues (frequent trips to the litter box) that necessitated several visits to the vet. The vet couldn’t find anything wrong with Frankie. I later realized Frankie’s frequent urination was caused by the wet food I was giving him. Once I changed his diet, all the urinary issues disappeared.

Frankie’s been with me a little over a month now, and it feels as if he’s always been a member of our family. The other day I caught him snuggled up with Jax, which put a big smile on my face. He is a bit of trouble maker and has climbed up my fully decorated Christmas tree twice. He’s also ventured into the fireplace. I know this because I found big black streaks on his fur.

Oh, you might be wondering about his name. I believe the lovely folks that found him gave it to him. My guess is that it was inspired by Frank “Ol Blue Eyes” Sinatra. As you can see, my Frankie has striking blue eyes, too. I liked the name so much, that I didn’t feel any need to change it. Though, like any beloved pet, Frankie has garnered a few nicknames: Frankiestein, Frankie Doodle Doo, and Franklin.

Thank you for allowing me to officially introduce Frankie to you. I am so happy to welcome him into my home, and I suspect he’ll be making more appearances on IBC in the years ahead.

Hi Frankie. He is such a beautiful cat.

Welcome Frankie! He’s so handsome. I got my first kitten about a month ago – a ragdoll I’ve named Freddie Mercury. I didn’t think I was a cat person but after having Freddie I’m already thinking of a little friend for him. Animals are just so lovely – especially when living alone. Something special about coming home to someone who adores you.

What a beautiful cat! You are so lucky to have found each other!
Often, frequent urination can be caused by stress. Wet food is so much better for cats than dry food. I hope you will re-introduce it now that he is settled in.

What a beautiful cat! This brings up a question I’ve had for you for many years – how do you deal with cat mess? I so admire the way you’ve been able to decorate your homes over the years, and I’m very interested in design. BUT – I have two cats that have various health issues, and between the fur, random throw up, and other messes they cause, I’ve been reluctant to invest in the type of furnishings I’d like. It seems like every time I get a new rug or piece of soft furniture, that is the place they choose to make a mess. Do you have any go to suggestions about cleaning products for furniture/rugs when you have pets? Obviously regular cleaning can take care of things like fur, but I really struggle with the best way to keep other areas clean. I’d love a post on this topic – designing a beautiful home with pets. One of my cats is also a troublemaker, so much so that I haven’t put up a Christmas tree in 8 years! Thank you for all of the inspiration you provide, I’ve loved reading your blog for several years now.

    • Michael Wurm, Jr. at

This is a great questions. I think it’s challenging because I feel all cats are so different. However, I’ll definitely put together a post about this. Great idea!

      xo Michael

This is counterintuitive, but I have found that when my cats vomit, I leave it until it dries completely and then I can vacuum it up without stains. It has worked on my furniture and light-colored wool rugs. I have a cordless Dyson with a furniture attachment and amazingly, it works great in this situation. The hard part is letting the mess dry completely. That is why paper towels were invented-to put over the mess! Good luck!

  • Sandra at

He seems like the “purrfect” fit! And, what a beauty!

  • Linde at

He is one seriously handsome cat! Congratulatins Michael AND Frankie! Hope you share lots of pics of the kitties!

I have enjoyed discovering your blog a few months ago and like your style and stories. Now I like you even more learning that you have 3 cats! I have 2 myself. Congrats on the newest family member!

  • Cindy at

I had a Frankie myself once. I named him after Frank Sinatra. Sweetest kitty I ever had. He was solid white with beautiful blue eyes. Be warned though that the gene that causes the blue eyes in a white cat often means the kitty is deaf or hard of hearing. Mine turned out to be hard of hearing. Yours has some beautiful golden color in his fur so hopefully he hears ok. He looks super sweet as well. Congrats on your new family member!

  • Tracy at

He’s beautiful Congrats! Glad he fit in so well with the other cats and they are all getting along.

  • Linda Harris at

Bless you for your huge heart and love of cats….your feline family is adorable…..

  • Debbie at

So cute! I love having younger cats as they are so lively! I gave 2 old souls who are thankfully healthy and finally, after 3 years, getting along. I’m looking forward to seeing more of Frankie!

  • Cindy at

What a sweetie! Very photogenic. Animals are great. Kitty cats can be so naughty (climbing up your Christmas tree), but they weave their ways into our hearts that you end up loving on them even more. There is nothing more satisfying than waking up to their purr…life is good! Any hints on how you deal with cats scratching your beautiful furniture? I know it comes with the territory, but you seem to come up with ingenious ideas.

  • Eileen at

Love your cats! They are all beautiful! Ours died last year after 16 years. While we have 2 dogs, I feel like something is lacking in my life without a cat. I’m just scared to introduce a new cat to the dogs. Your house looks amazing

Frankie is sooooo pretty and lucky to have you as his owner. He looks as though he feels right at home.

  • Harriet Clark at

Frankie’s beautiful. Looks like he’s made himself at home.
He looks so much like a kitty we had named Murray. Murray was the runt of his litter and lived to be 20 years old. 😊

Thank you for opening your heart and home to another cat. He’s very blessed!

  • Lisa at

Thanks for sharing! He’s a beautiful boy. ❤️

I am so glad Frankie has a warm home to sleep in and lots of love and friendship. He is a handsome boy for sure. Glad your heart is big!!!! 🙂

  • wendy at

What an adorable little guy! And so great that they all get along. I, too, am a cat lover. I’ve have 2 (siblings). How do you keep them from clawing up your furniture and rugs? Mine are so destructive!

  • Judy Perez at

Frankie is so beautiful. I too love cats and your crew looks like one big happy family. My cat growing up was called Mildred Pierce because she had great looking eyebrows reminiscent of Joan Crawford’s.Milly lived to be 18 years old. Most of my growing up memories have her in them.

Congratulations on the new member of your family. He is gorgeous! It’s wonderful that you were able to give a stray a home. Adopt instead of buying! Congratulations again!😻😻😻

  • Sue at

Very happy for you and Frankie is a very handsome cat. I like his coloring, at first I thought he was all white; I see though he has some “cinnamon” which looks good on him.

I have a 14 year old cat and a two year old and I too, worry that if something happens to my older cat should I get another cat to keep the younger cat company.

  • Cathy Clark at

Frankie is such a GORGEOUS cat! Lucky you & him!

  • Lee at

“Concatulations” on your newest family member! He is a stunner just like our cat Sinatra was. Yes, he was named after Ole blue eyes too❤️
He found us and we consider that part of our lives with him as some of the very best.
    Miss him every day.
May you have a long and lovely time together.
I vote for at least a monthly update on all the kitties.❤️👏🏼👍🏼
