My absolute least favorite part of painting any room is the prep work, especially when a room hasn’t been painted in umpteen years. The cleaning, the patching, the sanding, it’s a nightmare.
For some reason, it’s probably the part of the process that takes the longest for me, because that’s how much I don’t like it. Anyway, I was glad to find out I’m not the only one.
Thank you all for making me feel a little better via Instagram.
As I mentioned a couple weeks ago, I’m giving one of my rooms a little makeover. You can see the before pictures here and the design plan here. This week I’ve managed to clear the room (other than the bed), remove the first layer of wallpaper, and I’ve started patching.
This weekend, at some point, I’m going to lock myself in this damn room until all the patching is done! I really hope to get painting next week.
Why so much patching you ask? Well, in 1993 when the original owners of my little inn bought this house they made some changes to add bathrooms for each room. Therefore, lots of molding was moved and added. Almost 10 years laters things have shifted, moved, and settled. Now, there are lots of gaps between the molding and the wall.
Yes, I could ignore it and just start painting, but taking the time to do this now makes all the difference in the final product.
With my patching plaster in hand, I start filling in the gaps.
It’s fairly simple and easy. I don’t know why I dislike it so much. I guess I just want to start seeing results.
I keep a damp rag handy to wipe away any excess. This keep sanding to a minimum. Nothing wrong with that!
Tada! So much better.
Being close to 100 years old, my little house is in great shape. Though, I discovered this room has several cracks and wrinkles. I defiantly want to take care of these before any painting. I see a lot of sanding in my future.
All in all I’m off to a good start. Now, if I could just pause everything else that requires my attention I’d be in good shape!
To make this whole process a little bit easier, I must have some music playing nearby. Over the past month I have been completely obsessed with this mix on 8track.com by Happyolks. Please tell me you read her/their blog. It’s fantastic! Anyway, she posted the link to this mix a few weeks again and I’ve been loving it ever since.
Anyway, if you need or like folksy, easy, comforting music, give this mix a listen. You will love it!
And yes, I recently treated myself to an iPad. Treat Yo Self! I’m head-over-heels in love with the darn thing. Technology is amazing!
In other news, this weekend I’m starting to transform my little gift shoppe form Summer to Fall. Where did the time go!?
Anyway, last Christmas I shared my progress with you when I transformed my shoppe into a christmas wonderland. This probably won’t be nearly as exciting, and will happen over the course of a week, but you are more than welcome to follow along with my progress.
Have you all started decorating for fall yet? I love it, but I wish it lasted a month longer, don’t you? It’s my favorite season.
