Living in Central PA, I find this time of year most uninspiring when it comes to decorating my house. While I’m glad the clutter of the holidays is gone, I still like to have color and interesting details fill my home.
Of course, it’s too early for spring. I also don’t really do Valentine’s Day and if I see another pinecone, I might scream. Thankfully, the other day inspiration struck when I was doing a little shopping at Walmart. Yes, I was somehow inspired by Walmart. Alert the design gods. Anywho, the store had just received a huge shipment of “exotic angel plants,” and I knew they’d add the perfect amount of freshness, life, and inspiration to my space. So, I loaded up my cart and off I went.
With my plants on hand, I was ready to break out another new treasure! This past November I was extremely fortunate to find this old chicken feeder on eBay. Normally, these suckers come with a hefty price tag. Luck was on my side, and I was able to pick up this guy for under $40 (with shipping). Talk about a steal. I actually never even opened the box until yesterday. It sat in my basement untouched for three months. Get it together, Michael!
So, I simply put in my plants, added a few candlesticks, tucked in a little moss – and a centerpiece was born! I love how the plants are peeking out of the rusty galvanized screen. The candlesticks add a little sparkle and glam. It’s all the things I love.
I have a terrible track record with these plants. (Though, I blame myself because I probably should not be buying something with “exotic” in its name.) But that doesn’t stop me from trying. Hopefully, I can keep them alive for at least a few months. At $2.50 each, it seemed worth the risk.
While it’s not much, this little centerpiece definitely got my creative brain working. I’m excited to tackle a few other areas in my house in hopes of no longer being uninspired by this season. How do you decorate this time of year?
That looks fantastic! I just love your design style. I am slowing decorating our new home and stop by your blog daily for inspiration. Word of caution on the Walmart plants…..treat for bugs even if you don’t see any right away. I am speaking from a rather embarrassing experience. They can make indoor dining seem very outdoorsy without much notice. On my way to check out the Threshold line at Target!
I’m new here and this is the bomb! LOVE it! I want a chicken feeder now 🙂 Pinned to the Better Homes & Garden “blogger home projects board” 🙂
Love the chicken feeder — fabulous, but can I bother you for the paint color? Our dining room is orange creamsicle, and I want more of what color you have. I hope you can help! thank you!!!
Michael, love the chicken feeder but I can’t keep my eyes off the baubbles on your chandelier! Round crystals? Glass ornaments? I searched and found where you bought it but it looks like it had normal not so stunning crystals to start with, I’m sure you’ve talked about it, did I miss it? Those glass balls are to die for!!!
I never thought of an old chicken feeder as decorative….but now I will be looking. That is the most inspiring use for one ever! I love the plants and then the added candlesticks. Genius!
Thanks!
Nancy
