DIY Tag Banner

It’s hard to believe it’s been two weeks since my Fall Home Tour. You may remember that one of my fall decorations was this banner that I hung on my fireplace. Today I want to show you how I made it. In fact, I’m going to share three variations so you can create the perfect DIY Tag Banner for your home.

So how did this all come about? I had seen this style of banner for sale at stores, but unfortunately either the saying or colors didn’t suit my style. That inspired me to create my own. The best part about this project is that it’s completely customizable. – You choose the colors and word or phrase to make a banner that’s uniquely suited to your space or a particular event, holiday, or season.

For my Fall Home Tour mantel, I made a traditional-looking banner. Using these orange hang tags I found online, I just added gold sticker letters (from Walmart) to spell out, “Happy Fall Y’all.”

Although I love my fall mantelscape, the banner adds a splash of color to this part of the room that helps tie in the rest of the space.

Over in my dining room is a smaller banner that I made.

Drawing on the copper and rose gold accents I used to decorate this room, I put rose gold sticker letters on black hang tags (both from Michael’s) to spell out “Harvest.” I plan to use this banner from now through Thanksgiving.

As you can see, the process for creating the banners is very simple. What makes this even more fun is that I just used mini clothespins to hang each letter tag on a piece of twine. So, if desired, you could include a banner in your décor year round. Swapping out the letters for each season or special celebration would be super quick.

To give you an example of this, I decided to change my living room banner to something a bit more clever for Halloween.

Inspired by one of my all-time favorite shows, Parks and Recreation, I opted for “Trick or Treat Yo’self.” It’s a modern and fun nod to All Hallows’ Eve.

I used the same orange tags, but this time I went with black letters – the traditional colors of Halloween.

To portray the “trick” part of the expression, I tucked in a few black glitter spiders.

Then, I displayed an assortment of chocolatey goodies on my coffee table to represent the “treat.”

While most of the décor remained the same, my space took on a whole new vibe with just a couple simple, but important changes.

I don’t know about you, but I’m loving it. (Well, at least until I’m surrounded by regret and candy wrappers.)

Now, I know you probably don’t need a full tutorial on crafting these banners, but let me share a supply list and some tips with the step-by-step directions.

For this project, you will need:
Large hang tags
Alphabet stickers
Twine
Mini clothespins
Ruler, optional

First, purchase hang tags and alphabet stickers. I found my supplies at Walmart, Michael’s, and Amazon. When you’re making your selections, pay attention to the sizes so that the letters will fit the tags, and the finished banner will be the right size for the space where you plan to hang it.

Next, figure out what you’d like your banner to say. Feel free to use my ideas or come up with your own. Even something as simple as “Happy Halloween” would be perfect! If you have extra tags and letters, you could also spell out “Thanksgiving” and swap out the tags after October 31.

Now add your letters to the tags. I just eyeballed the letters, but you might want to use a ruler for exact placement.

Once your lettered tags are ready, attach the ends of a length of twine where you want to hang the banner. Pushpins work great for this.

Then, use mini clothespins to clip the letters to the twine. I find it easiest to start in the middle with the middle letter and work out from there.

And that’s it. Custom and seasonal decor in no time.
