When I was at the grocery store the other day, I bought some apple cider. That was all the inspiration I needed to whip up this Cider and Maple Old Fashioned.

In essence, this is a classic old fashioned recipe but with a couple of substitutions. Instead of sugar, we’re using maple syrup, and instead of orange and cherry, we’re using apple cider. These changes give the classic a new flavor profile that’s perfect for fall.

My Favorite Bourbon

As you might recall, I’ve recently become a bourbon fan. A few years ago I wouldn’t dream of making or ordering a bourbon-based drink. However, after intentionally trying bourbon whenever I had the opportunity, it’s now a favorite. I’m especially fond of Four Roses Single Barrel, which you will often see me use. For maple syrup, you can’t miss with my go-to: Finding Home Farms. This time around, though, I opted for their Rye Barrel-Aged Maple Syrup. I thought a maple syrup aged in a whiskey barrel would make a lovely addition. I was right!

If you don’t have this particular maple syrup, don’t worry. Your cocktail will be equally delicious. Just make sure you use REAL maple syrup. I’ve shared my recommendations below.

Now that you have an idea of some of my favorite ingredients for this Cider and Maple Old Fashioned recipe, let’s whip one up.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

  • While we all appreciate the timeless allure of a classic old fashioned, this version offers a unique fall-inspired twist. By swapping out sugar for maple syrup and adding a splash of apple cider, you get a harmonious blend of flavors that’s both familiar and unique.
  • This Cider and Maple Old Fashioned embodies effortless elegance. It’s straightforward to make, requiring minimal ingredients, but the end result is a cocktail that feels both upscale, approachable, and seasonal.
  • Whether you’re hosting a fall-themed party or just having a quiet evening with friends, this drink is sure to be a hit. Its inviting amber hue and tantalizing taste make it a perfect conversation starter.

Ingredients

Now we are ready to gather up the handful of ingredients you’ll need to shake up this cider and maple old fashioned.

  • Bourbon (Four Roses Single Barrel): A premium bourbon with spicy flavors and a smooth finish. Single barrel bottling ensures a unique character in every sip.
  • Pure Maple Syrup (Finding Home Farms): A rich, natural sweetener with caramel undertones. Produced artisanally for both flavor and sustainability.
  • Apple Cider: Offers a tangy but fresh kick, balancing the cocktail’s richness. Its taste is reminiscent of crisp fall days and fresh orchards.
  • Orange Bitters: Introduces a zesty citrus edge, elevating the aromatic experience and bridging sweet and spicy notes.
  • Cinnamon Sticks (for garnish): A visual treat that subtly infuses the drink with its warm, aromatic essence as it steeps. I prefer these longer cinnamon sticks for cocktail garnishes.

How to Make

This cocktail couldn’t be easier to make. Since I like my drinks as cold as possible, I like to put this together in a cocktail shaker. If you don’t have one, you can just add all of the ingredients to a rocks glass and give them a good stir.

Simply follow the simple instructions below to prepare this fall-inspired old fashioned. I’ve also provided a full ingredient list and detailed instructions in the printable recipe card at the end of this post.

  1. To a cocktail shaker filled with ice, add the bourbon, pure maple syrup, apple cider, and orange bitters.
  2. Then shake up the mixture to cool and combine.

  2. Finish by garnishing with a cinnamon stick.

Pro Tip: I prefer these longer cinnamon sticks for cocktail garnishes. They can be challenging to find in the grocery store so I buy mine online.

And that’s it! An exquisite cocktail for fall!

Recipe Variations

Here are a few variations you can make to this specific recipe. I’ve also include a few other unique flavored old fashioned recipes below.

  • Spiced Cider Old Fashioned: Infuse the apple cider with cloves, star anise, and a slice of ginger before using it in the cocktail. This adds a warming and aromatic layer that’s great for cold evenings.
  • Caramel Apple Old Fashioned: Rim the glass with caramel before pouring in the cocktail. This adds a sweet, sticky touch that complements the apple and maple flavors.
  • Cider and Honey Old Fashioned: Replace the maple syrup with raw honey. It adds a floral sweetness that pairs well with the apple cider.
  • Smoked Maple Old Fashioned: Use a smoking gun or a lit cinnamon stick to infuse the cocktail with a smoky aroma just before serving. It adds a rustic, campfire-like element to the drink.

I love a classic old fashioned, but I also love unique variations of the classic recipe. Here are a few you may enjoy:

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a different bourbon?

Absolutely! While Four Roses Single Barrel is recommended for its unique profile, any quality bourbon should work in this recipe. Adjust to your taste.

Is there a non-alcoholic version?

For a non-alcoholic twist, substitute the bourbon with non-alcoholic apple cider or ginger ale. You’ll still enjoy the seasonal flavors!

I don’t have orange bitters. Can I still make this?

While orange bitters enhance the cocktail’s depth, you can skip them or substitute with a twist of orange zest for a hint of citrus. You can also use classic angostura bitter.

Can I use artificial maple syrup?

Authentic flavor comes from pure maple syrup. Artificial syrups may alter the taste and are not recommended for this recipe.

  1. I love an Old Fashioned and we had some cider on hand so did a test run last weekend for a small dinner party. It was a big hit! I cut back slightly on the maple syrup, just personal preference, make a batch for a pitcher and it was delicious. In the past I have tried other versions and they are very cider-forward whereas this is a delicious, fall/holiday version of a true Old Fashioned. Thank you!

  2. Excellent Fall cocktail but, would have liked more of a cinnamon taste instead of just as a garnish, overall delicious for a Four Roses Bourbon lover.

    1. Thanks! For this cocktail I focused on the cider and maple flavors. If you want more of a cinnamon kick, you could add a couple cinnamon sticks to your bourbon and let it sit for a few days to infuse that flavor. Cheers.
