it’s the middle of february and i am completely and utterly sick of the snow and cold weather. i love planting things. watching things grow. so the winter especially sucks. i enjoy following this blog where this woman lives in california. her life is so colorful. almost magical. anyway, the other day she posted a picture of herself surrounded by green. i was jealous. california, here i come.

after sometime on her sweet blog i was wondered aimlessly on etsy, I discovered these ah-mazing terrarium balls. and i was inspired.

picture found at LBrandt

i’m not a huge fan of air plants (they look like the may come alive an attack me in my sleep or something – they just seem unnatural). i also hate spending money on something i can do myself. (no offensive etsy seller) so i did some research and found the little glass orbs for a steal here. great, right? i had dirt (who doesn’t) so that was free. i mixed some stones into the dirt (free again) to create some sort of drainage. necessary? i’m not sure.

i had a couple succulents in a planter that i brought inside for the winter (which is super cool too. i’ll have to show you it another time. after it gets back outside. its looking a little sad. i think it’s ready for the winter to be over too.) anyway, so I just cut the succulents and put them in the dirt. supposedly they should root this way. ‘they’ say not to water the succulent clipping when you first plant them as the plant stores water in it leaves. then as time passes you can start to water.

i also found this string of pearls succulent here. (looks like there are none available at this time.) This flower ^ came after I planted the clippings, so it must be doing ok. oh, and this etsy seller is amazing. quick shipping, affordable price and they included directions for how to plant! awesome.

so, here’s what i came up with.

I must admit one of the succulents did have an untimely death (even before photos were taken). I think it was too drafty near this particular window. just about that time, my mom got me the cutest fern, so i decided to try planting that in the orb instead. this is test. so far, so good. i’ll keep you posted.

they are suspended by fishing line on a hook i screwed into the trip. (it’s hard to see in the pics) of course the older, yet more practical generation that sees these creations ask, ‘how are you going to water that?’ well, it actually super easy. just take them down (there are little holes in the top) and slowly pour the water in…slowly is key. then wipe off the glass. it’s really simple. and succulents seem to be pretty low maintenance, so that’s even better.

this is all still a big experiment. but i like that. and if it works out in the end, even better. i’ll keep you posted.

oh, and I made these for breakfast today. (thanks for the recipe idea room!) i, of course, jazzed mine up with some lemon zest and vanilla. not the best muffins i’ve ever had, but pretty darn good.

instead of making the standard of chocolate dipped strawberries for valentine’s day 2010, i thought i’d mix it up and try something new. i’ve never made meringues before and must admit i was a little intimidated. turns out it isn’t that difficult! the recipe i found seemed a little…blah… so i perked things up with some good vanilla and a little red food coloring.

all in all, not to bad. i love taking standard recipes and making them special with ingredients that i love (well, who doesn’t love vanilla). i’m able to take something and make it my own.

Authentic French Meringues
Adapted from: allrecipes.com

Ingredients:
8 eggs whites (room temperature – this is important!!)
4 1/2 cups confectioners’ sugar
1 drop ‘good’ (as ina garten would say) vanilla
1 drop red food coloring

Melted butter and flour (for baking sheet)

Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 200 degrees F. Brush baking sheet with melted butter, then flour. Crack your eggs separating your yolks from your whites.

2. In a glass or metal bowl, whip egg whites until foamy with electric mixer. Sprinkle in sugar a little at a time while continuing to whip at medium speed.

3. Add vanilla and food coloring.

4. When mixture forms stiff peaks and becomes shiny, stop mixing and transfer to a large pastry bag. (I didn’t have one, so I just used a ziploc bag with a small hole cut in the corner.) Then have fun piping. Round shapes or stars (formed with a star tip on your pastry bag) are most common.

spell out a word, a date, a name…

5. Place the meringues in the oven. Put a wooden spoon handle in the door to keep the oven from completely closing. Bake for 2-3 hours (depending on size), until the meringues are dry (all the way through – I just taste tested one!). Meringues should easily remove from sheet.

4. Allow meringues to cool completely. Eat … or store in an airtight container at room temp.

ta-da! don’t they look great? and they taste yummy too!!

how would you make this recipe your own? maybe add chocolate? lemon zest? cotton candy flavoring? espresso? endless options. try one. let me know how it turns out.

and don’t forget about our sweet giveaway. comment now through friday and you could win!

wow. i must say there are some really creative folks out there. typically i’m not a huge fan of valentine’s day but i’ve been inspired by all of the pink and red cheer others have been sharing.

first, garlands seem to be taking over the craft world. which, is not a bad thing-it’s hard not to be happy when there is garland around.

here is what i created from inspiration found here, here, here and here. (i could go on, but you get the idea)

anyway… most people crafted a similar garland use their sewing machine to attach the pieces. unfortunately, i don’t have a sewing machine and probably couldn’t figure out how to thread the thing, even though my mom has showed me several times.

so i used what i had…

first i printed a heart pattern i found online or from clip art in ms word (can’t remember). i found some colored paper for an amazing price, from an amazing ebay seller.

i have very little patience, so i was not about to trace my heart pattern on every piece of paper. i just stacked as many pieces of colored paper together as i could cut at once, set my heart pattern on top, and cut around it. (i cut out two of every heart color/pattern so i’d have a front and back)

i then used rubber cement (this is the best glue ever… never leaves those little wrinkles and bubbles like elmers glue… and if you get it somewhere you don’t want… it rubs right off!) and fishing line to create my garland. i did keep a good measure of the distance between my hearts (about two inches) for some consistency.

and voila! instant valentine’s cheer!

garlands not your thing? check out this, this and this. maybe they will help you get into the valentines spirit.

and these… yum… my mom made the most delicious sugar cookies for my open house last weekend. so simple, so delicious!

hate to say it, but i told you so… people are incredibly creative!

I…successfully?…blew snow (is that the correct wording for the past test of snow blowing?) for the first time today and have documented what I learned. While reading you may think: what an idiot. It’s okay – trust me, the thought ran through my mind several times.

Here’s what I learned:

1. When removing your snow blower from your shed, keep in mind that the melting snow from the roof could have created ice below the snow. This could… will… result in low tracking, followed by an embarrassing fall.

2. Plan first, then blow. It is important to take into account where you want the snow to be when finished. Also, taking in to account which direction the wind is blowing is essential.

3. The appropriate couture is recommended. Keep in mind that the snow does in fact blow.

4. No matter how much you plan, it is inevitable that the street snow plow will pass by as soon as you finish blowing the bottom of your driveway. Don’t lose hope.

5. Patience is key. Attempting to push the snow blower or plowing too much at once will create extreme frustration and added work.

6. Plowing in a square or circular pattern is not advisable as this will create a large pile of snow in your driveway that will need to be moved by another means.

7. If it’s still snowing while you are blowing, by the time you are ‘done’ you may need to start all over again.

8. For you those of you traveling past in your heated automobile. It is advisable NOT to honk. By the time the snow clears from the air the person snow blowing will have no idea who you are resulting in further frustration.

9. While snow blowing is an excellent snow remove system. Keep in mind you will still need to shovel some areas. Trying to squeeze your snow blowing apparatus into every area is not possible or advisable.

10. Snow blowing is NOT as easy as it looks.

A while back I went to a local quilt shop with my mom and convinced her to make me a quilt that the shop owner had on display. As luck would have it, they were offering a class at the shop to create this quilt. My mom took the class.

A couple years later (she’s a busy woman), I got my quilt… and I couldn’t be happier!

It’s super soft and super cozy (it’s made of this amazing flannel type fabric).

Aren’t the little ties the perfect finishing touch? I just had to share… even though I’m now to nervous to use it.

As far as instructions for making this treasure… I have no idea. Try contacting the quilt shop and I’m sure they could help.

In other news… my Project 365 is going to be moved to one day a week. On Sunday or Mondays I will post a weekly review with 7 photos from the past week. I think that will make more sense.

I adore this recipe. Years ago (well three years ago) when I was living in Philadelphia I discovered this recipe in Rachael Ray’s magazine. Which, at the time, I found surprising since she doesn’t really ‘do’ desserts. But, I made it anyway, and I’m glad I did.

Since this really isn’t my recipe you can click here to find it. Turns out its actually not Rachael Rays recipe either.. its from one of her fans. At any rate, it is delicious and super, super easy. Here at Old Charm, I like to serve it with breakfast. The leftovers, if there are any, make a great late night snack when returning back ‘home’ from a busy day with the family, sightseeing or visiting the Elk.

I’m a huge fan of peanut butter and chocolate together, so I’ve also tried this recipe using peanut butter and chocolate chips. It’s sinful.

Books for Summer Reading

Today I’m sharing some of my new books for Summer Reading.

I’ll be the first to admit I’m not a huge fan of reading. I love magazines. I love the way they create little scenes and little stories in all their pictures. Whether every detail has been carefully planned or if its a little haphazard…I find it inspiring! I suppose I’m a visual learner. I love seeing, doing, feeling and creating things. In school I was a horrible test taker. I couldn’t stand the thought or the process of sitting down and reading a textbook and then taking 100 question test on what I read. I never scored well. Give me a project, something that I can create with my hands, something I can imagine, something that doesn’t have an ‘answer’…then I’ll excel.

I’ve always loved books….not reading books…but having books or looking at books. (again with the picture thing) Sadly, I one of those people that judge a book by its cover. Some books covers are created with the most beautiful pictures or fonts and it draws me to it. Some would say I’m a sucker for good marketing. Anyway, after being inspired by some fellow bloggers, and realizing I haven’t read a book in its entirety in over a year, I decided to craft myself a summer reading list.

(This post contains affiliate links.)

In less than four days, I’m over half way through The Glass Castle (which says a lot for the book if I could read that much that quickly) Next I’m reading Little, Big then The Life of Pi and then I’m not sure. A couple suggestions include Man’s Search for Meaning and The Alchemist.

I suppose I’ll see if I can make it through the first three books and move on from there. If you have suggestions for  books for summer read… please leave a comment below. I love books with ‘heart’ or some inspired meaning. Obviously.

Looking through my last posts it seems that most are about plants or flowers… I apologize for that. I guess I’m just really enjoying the warm air and sunshine. I see why winter is so important…it certianly made me appreciate beautiful days of summer.

Over the past couple weeks I’ve been updating my landscaping in front of the Bed and Breakfast. After removing and replacing what seemed like 4 tons of stone (turns out it actually was 4 tons) I felt like a little ant. Back and forth. Back and forth. I’m finally ‘finished’. I say ‘finished’ because I still need to add a couple more shrubs… but they will come in the fall. I will post some pictures later this week.

On Mondays I use miracle-gro on all my flowers, pots, hanging baskets and some of my perennials. I once heard that it’s suggested to use fertilizer every forth watering. It takes me long enough to water without adding fertilizer to every watering can full of water, so I limit it to Mondays. It also helps me remember when a fertilized last. Genius.

As I watered I snapped some pictures of some flowers that have finally decided to open. Seems like the miracle-gro is working.

Today, I was reminded of the power of kindness. A wonderful couple staying here this weekend unexpectedly presented me a beautiful orchid as a thank you for an enjoyable stay. I was completely blown away and sincerely touched by this gesture.

It made me realize that the power of kindness is amazing. I decided to search through my 21 page word document saved on my computer to find a couple quotes about kindness that I like…here’s what I came up with…

Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle.
~Plato

The true meaning of life is to plant trees, under whose shade you do not expect to sit.
~Nelson Henderson

Those who bring sunshine to the lives of others cannot keep it from themselves.
~James Matthew Barrie

Sometimes someone says something really small, and it just fits right into this empty place in your heart.
~Unknown

Oh, and here’s my dining room…. or at least the start of it. Currently there is nothing on the walls…I would like to get a new area rug…and add a sofa table under the window (even though I did order one and they somehow forgot to include the screws)…and recover the chair cushion. In time. These things take time.

So, it seems that I’ve been away for a while again. Time certainly does fly. As I mentioned before, I did promise to be better at posting more often, but yet again, time has slipped away from me.

Anywho, I am back with a long to-do list over the next couple weeks. I have some great ideas that inspired me. As I complete these ideas/projects I will post them in hope they will inspired you also.

This is my latest creation. It’s a Tropical Breakfast Parfait. I was tired of my standard parfait of berries, yogurt and granola so I decided to mix things up!

So, included in this breakfast delight is luscious layers of vanilla yogurt, granola, pineapple, oranges, banana and fresh toasted coconut! Yum! The only thing I would change is to add a slice of kiwi for color… unfortunately I didn’t have any when I made these. Looks delicious huh?

And yes… they’re calling for snow tomorrow and Wednesday morning. 🙁

Today, as I rearranged the store for spring and the party on Saturday I ‘rediscovered’ the collection of cards I decided, long ago, to sell. Back when I was living in Philadelphia I discovered this card designer in a small gift shop and knew instantly that ‘someday’ I too would sell these cards.

Although often over looked in the Gift Shoppe these cards carry such a positive, whimsical and down-right happy message. The colors and colleague-style layout is so fun. I don’t know who wouldn’t LOVE to get one of these in the mail. Here are some of my favorites. Hope you enjoy them as much as I do! Stop by to see our collection or visit the Curly Girl website for even more great products.

I was looking for some ‘baking inspiration’ and my mom remembered she had some rhubarb frozen from my grandma’s garden. With spring on the horizon it was time to use up what was stored away for days exactly like today. Wow. It sounded delicious, but what could I make?

I researched the internet for recipes and I found one with great potential. With some minor adjustments, based on the reviews (thank goodness for reviews! A must read when available [you might as well learn from other’s mistakes to prevent some of your own]) the recipe turned out great! All I need to do now is serve with a huge scoop of vanilla ice cream! YUM!

Rhubarb Crisp

– 1lb fresh rhubarb, cut into 3/4in pieces (aka… 4 cups … oh and mine was fresh.. but frozen)

– 3/4 cup sugar

– 1 1/4 cup AP flower

– 1 tsp Cinnamon

– 3/4 cup packed brown sugar

– 1/2 cup old-fashion rolled oats

– 1/2 cup unsalted butter (aka…1 stick), melted…but cool

Combine rhubarb with sugar, 1/4 cup flour and cinnamon (and I added a couple drops of red food coloring – makes it look brighter) and transfer to a 8X8 inch pan.

In a bowl combine remaining 1 cup flour, brown sugar, rolled oats and butter. Mix well. Sprinkle over rhubarb mixture and bake 35 mins until top is golden and rhubarb tender. Serve warm with a big scoop of vanilla ice cream.

…really BIG chocolate chip cookies!

I was in the mood to bake but didn’t want to go to the store to buy tons of ingredients. So, I searched through my cupboards and found that I had everything I needed to make chocolate chip cookies. Yum.

I then began the search through my cookbooks and found a great recipe for extra large chocolate chips cookies. Perfect. Can you believe this is actually the first time I’ve made chocolate chip cookies from scratch?!

Anyway here’s the recipe. They are delicious! And the size of them is great! Tie three stacked together with a ribbon and go out and make someones day!

‘Why Are They So Big’ Chocolate Chip Cookies

2 c. all-purpose flour

1/2 t. baking soda

1/2 t. salt

3/4 c. butter, melted

1 c. brown sugar

1/2 c. sugar

1 egg

1 egg yolk

1 T. vanilla

6-oz milk chocolate chips

6-oz semi-sweet chocolate chips

Sift flour, baking soda and salt in a medium bowl, set aside. In a large bowl beat butter, sugar and brown sugar until well blended. Add egg, egg yolk and vanilla; beat until light and creamy. Add flour mixture; stir by hand until just blended. Do not over mix. Stir in chocolate chips.

Form dough into balls, 1/4 cup at a time (mine were a little smaller – I used a medium sized ice cream scooper to keep the size consistent); arrange 2 inches apart on greased or paper-lined baking sheets. Bake at 325 degrees for 15 to 17 minutes, or until edges are golden. Cool on baking sheets for several minutes, cool on wire rack. Makes about 15 cookies.

The sun is shining, there are no clouds in the sky and it’s supposed to be in the 40s for at least the next 10 days!! Finally. I hope this means the end of winter.

Inspired by the weather I decided to update my chalkboards. Hopefully they will excite you for spring too!

I’m shocked. I went to take a look at my little seedlings today, of course not expected to see anything but wet dirt, and to my surprise a little seed has burst to life in a little over 24 hours! I’m amazed. Isn’t nature wonderful. Welcome to the world Ornamental Millet Purple Majesty Hybrid.

As I mentioned before, last year I planted a majority of my flowers from seed, and will do the same this year. I’m hoping to start this week if my plant light bulbs arrive in time. Most of the seeds I have require temperatures ranging from 70-80 degrees to germinate. Unfortunately the temperatures in central PA are not going to exceed 38 degrees of within the next 10 days…maybe even longer (The Weather Channel only gives me a 10-day forcast). I’m hoping that my plant lights, a heating pad and a mini heater will help. Lets hope.

Anyway, last summer I saw a picture of a geranium topiary in Cottage Living magazine. I was inspired, I had to have one! So at the end of summer I looked through all my geraniums to find one with a somewhat straight stems. Success! I found one. I transplanted it into a pot and cared for it all winter long.

I also did some research to find out which geraniums make the best topiary. I was told by several sources it was the Lemon Crispum Geranium. It’s leaves have a wonderful lemon scent, supposedly it can be use for cooking and it has pink flowers. I purchased three of these in the fall, bad idea. Having to keep them alive all winter was tough, but I think I succeed. Just last week I trimmed them down to one main stem…there used to be many sprouts and branches.

I have four topiaries in total, one a standard geranium, which happens to be the tallest, and three Lemon Crispum Geraniums. I think they are as ready as I am for the spring and summer. Bring on the sunshine.

Progress on the attic has been continuing over the past couple weeks. I’m learning that even the smallest details take so long to accomplish. Especially since we are working from ‘nothing’. We have a general plan on what the finish project should look like but none on the small steps laid out in detail.

Anyway, here are some of the things that were accomplished last week.

See the large strip of floor missing? Well, we accidentally cut into a gas line we thought was empty. This was the old gas line that ran into all the bedrooms to provide gas to the old lights in the house. After we cut into this line we had to quickly tear down one of the wall we built to access the pipes to seal off the line. Crisis averted. The two small boxes on either side of the window are little built-in behind the main wall. They will hold my wine cooler and a mini-fridge. It’s tough to see, but we all began the process of running electricity. See the wires?

On the right…the large opening… is the beginning of another built-in. This will be a space for me to tuck my TV and related equipment into the wall. This way I won’t have to take up any floor space for that equipment! Good idea, huh?

I was happy to look at the weather forecast today to see that we may finally be breaking this horrible cold streak… well it lasted for about two months so that may be more than a streak. Looking ahead at the 10-day forecast it seems that the temperates should stay above 30 degrees with this coming Saturday reaching to the low 40s! Finally. Hopefully this ‘heat wave’ will help to melt some of the snow and warm peoples hearts. My onion is also ready for warmer weather as evident by its fresh green sprouts.

I’m headed to my sister-in-laws today to visit her and my nephews while my brother is away on business. I offered to make dessert. As I searched through my binder of potential recipes I found some great ideas, but I wanted to make something that was ‘kid friendly’ and with the upcoming Valentine holiday, red velvet ‘k-cakes’ as my nephew would say, were the perfect option!

Since I had a box of red velvet cake mix I decided to make it easy on myself and opted to not make them from scratch. Maybe next time.

I love the color of this cake!

I had a recipe for a quick butter cream… I think it was from Country Living Magazine, so I decide I would make that and do some fun dots on the cupcakes. The butter cream was super easy to make and quite delicious!

Almost Homemade Butter Cream

~16 oz marshmallow cream

~1 1/2 cups (3 sticks) butter, softened

~1 tsp vanilla extract

~1/2 cup confectioners’ sugar

Beat the marshmallow cream using an electric mixer set on low. Add the butter (in 1-inch pieces) and beat until smooth. Add vanilla and confectioners’ sugar, scraping down the sides of the bowl occasionally, and continue to beat on medium-high until smooth and fluffy.

As I searched through my binder of potential recipes I found some great ideas, but I wanted to make something that was ‘kid friendly’ and with the upcoming Valentine holiday, red […]

Last year, in the absence of a job and an increasing level of boredom. I decided I would grow my own annual (well…some turned out to be perennial) garden from seed. I went on Ebay and parkseed.com to find out what seeds I could purchase to create my garden. Boy was I surprised! I never realized how many seeds were out there!

I really had no idea what I was doing, I just picked out things that looked nice. I did learn a lot from the process and won’t be growing certain flowers again. The geraniums did the best! They were HUGE. Much nicer than geraniums you can purchase.

Last year, again not knowing what I was doing, I started planting in the beginning of April. This was probably about a month too late. This year I’m planning on starting at the end of February or beginning of March. I already have 90% of my seeds. This is what I used to plant my seeds last year. I will use a couple of these again, but have also upgraded to this, which I can reuse year after year.

Once I get things going at the end of the month I will post some pictures of my little seedlings and perhaps what they will look like. Some of the things I planting this year are geraniums (love them), petunias, an assortment of mint (chocolate, pineapple, apple, orange, hazelnut – these are great for desserts and breakfast parfaits – YUM!), decorative grasses, Lantana … and lots more … I can’t think of them all right now.)

If you are looking for a fun project to start this is great! By the end of February when you are sick of the cold weather it is nice to see something alive and growing. It also saves big bucks!! The cost of flowers is ridiculous! Especially when they are different or unique. Seed packets only cost $3-5 and you get anywhere from 10-20 plants from one packet! What a deal. Happy planting.

I get a plethora of magazines and catalogs in the mail…. some I throw away without opening the cover, others I leaf through and toss, a few I look through immediately and save to wonder through again and some are just dreams… today I received Williams Sonoma Home. Usually they are a little to fussy and formal for me, but they are GREAT for inspiration. Out of the entire catalog one page stood out the most. I think it’s the color that did it for me.

That lime green/chartreuse color is one of my favorites. I think there is something about it that’s so alive and fresh….and its a lot of fun. I also love the way they hung the pictures behind the chair. Two large pieces of art hung one on top of the other. It’s so dramatic! The details (you may not be able to see) on the pillows are also amazing. The only change I would make is to add a sense of comfort…or a ‘lived in’ look. A place where you CAN put your feet on the coffee and relax…. a home. Every room of the house should be lived in.

Hope you enjoy the photo as much as I do. Another idea to be filed away for future use.

So, as I move through this ‘journey’ called life I have learned a lot of lessons. Lessons that, if the rest of the world would learn, this planet would be a much happier place. A couple years ago, while working at the Four Seasons there was a server named Tia. She was, and I’m sure still is, an amazing person. Yes, there were days she would drive me crazy – but I suppose we all do that to each other sometimes – but those days were outnumbered by the days she would make me happy to be alive. Her joyful spirit, poetic stories and her happy-go-lucky attitude were contagious. She always knew exactly how to make me laugh and what to say when I needed that little pick me up. Anyway, one day Tia said to me, “Michael, I truly believe that certain people are brought into our lives for a reason, and you are one of those people. Your spirit has made an impact on my life.” (or something to that effect) A couple months after Tia told me this she quit the Four Seasons and I’ve only seen her once or twice since. The lesson that Tia taught me is that there are people that have come (and gone) in my life for some particular reason. They have touched my life or my heart and have helped to create the person that I am. No matter how much time I spent with them, an hour, a day, a year or a lifetime they have made me who I am today. And, since I live my life to music, listen to ‘For Good – Wicked Soundtrack’, it sums this up in a lovely, inspriational musical number. Tia if you ever read this, which I doubt you will – Thank you.

That was a rather long introduction to the point of my story, but yesterday I received and email from my friend Liz. I don’t think I talked to Liz in 4-5 years, but she read on facebook that I had purchased a bed and breakfast, started a blog, etc. I wanted to share part of her email (Liz, I hope you don’t mind)

“…I am so in awe of you! Your Inn and website(s) are creative, charming and absolutely beautiful. You sound so happy and it sounds like you’re extremely successful as well. I know one day, you’ll expand to the south where you’ll open a second bed and breakfast on a creek — Dawson’s Creek-style….”

This email made my day, my week… maybe even my month! Liz is one of those people that I was supposed to meet and has made such a wonderful impact on my life. So, Liz, Thank you.

This is a picture of Liz and I (again I hope you don’t mind). As our friend Dana (aka Kimmy) says this is from our JCrew photo shoot.

With a full house I decided to make a Delicious treat which will serve two purposes. One, it will make the house smell delicious and two, it will be a nice afternoon treat when my guests return from work. Mother nature decided to treat us with freezing rain, sleet, snow, etc. It is pretty ‘yucky’ outside.
Anyway. I decided to make cheesecake brownies… or as I like to call them, ‘Marianne’s Cheesecake Brownies’. When I was a Resident Assistant in the dorms at Penn State, our coordinator (basically the person that oversees the RAs and the residents) would make these for us often. Marianne was always wonderful to us and not just because of her baking. She was the best.

The recipe is quite simple. Prepare the brownies per the manufactures instructions (I prefer cake-like). Oh! and a special trick… instead of using plain water, as the recipe calls for, use coffee or instant coffee mix. Coffee has a delightful way of bringing out the flavor of chocolate.

Once you have the brownie mix made pour it into a bottom-greased 9X13 pan. (Don’t forget to preheat your oven to 350 degrees.)

In a medium size mixing bowl, mix or whisk together the following:
~ 8oz package room temp cream cheese (cold cream cheese will create lumps)
~ 1/3 cup sugar
~ 1 egg
~ 1/2 tsp good vanilla

When mixed (make sure it’s nice and smooth) pour over top your brownie batter and swirl in with a knife. Again bake brownies according to the manufactures directions.

Cool, cut and enjoy!
