i have a wall as you first enter my house/gift shoppe. when my house was first built in 1917, this wall was originally the back of a closet. i assume when the first owners of my little inn bought the house they removed the doors and turned the space into a little nook/office (yeah, people were turning closets into nooks in the 90’s too).

this space has now become my ‘window display’. being in a traditional house, i don’t have a huge window space to decorate seasonal as most cute little shoppes. i believe i mentioned some of this before and have shown you how this wall has changed in the past.

if you followed along with #makingofachristmasshoppe you’ll know this wall used to be purple grape harvest. well, grape harvest doesn’t lend itself well to spring and summer so i figured the wall needed a little facelift. i wanted something bright, warm and fun.

lately, i’ve been a little obsessed with the whole chevron pattern craze. so, chevron is what i decided on. honestly, no other idea really stood a chance.

in my usual style i wanted to mix in a little rustic, lived-in flare to the modern, clean lines of the chevron. i decided white would be my background color and the actual chevron would resemble a linen or burlap. i know, this sounds crazy. but i was going for it!

the good thing about this wall is that it’s fairly small and i paint it often, so if this all went really bad it wasn’t a huge commitment. i also wanted to use paint i had on hand. other than i roll of tape ($7) this project had no additional costs.

now, before we get into the nitty gritty of how i did this, lets take a look at an after picture.

IMG_1288.JPG

lovely, right?

through some odd miracle, i achieved exactly the look i wanted! i love it when that happens.

ok, now it’s time for a little tutorial.

as i mentioned i started with a grape harvest wall. (oh and i apologize in advance if some of my pictures are not the best. some were taken at 1am.)

IMG_1024.JPG

white was my base. i used kilz white satin paint right out of the can. it took three coats to cover (the picture below is after one coat…i think).

IMG_1039.JPG

next, i needed to tape off my chevron pattern. this requires a little math, but once you’ve figure it out the process is pretty simple.

first, i determined the length of my wall was 75″.

second, i decided i wanted six total chevron points. one of which would be split in half on either end.

i divided 75″ by 6″ to get 12.5″. this would be the total width of one point/upside down triangle.

then, i divided 12.5″ in half to get 6.25″. this is half the width and the location where the point from the next row of chevron would meet.

got it so far?

i didn’t worry to much over the height of the chevron or how many rows i would need as the top portion of my wall is covered. to make things simple, i just choose 12″ for the height.

Inspired By Charm

as you can see from the image above you are just going to draw dots (i used a pencil and made a teeny tiny little dots) across your wall. it’s important to use a level for this. my level has the measurements printed on it. you want your lines to be as straight as possible. i started on the bottom of my wall and worked up. i choose to start about two inches from the bottom of my wall so that the first chevron wouldn’t be touching the baseboard.

to place your tape, tear off the length you’ll need to reach from one point to the next, plus a little extra on each side (you’ll see why in the next step). then place your tape on the wall connecting the dots as illustrated in the picture above.

for the most part i worked in rows. i’d put in a row of dots, then tape, other row of dots, then tape.

once you get going it all starts to make sense and move pretty quickly.

IMG_1053.JPG

tada! you can see you’ll have some tape that over hangs were you will need to paint. so you’ll need to trim every other row.  i used an exacto knife.

as you can see below, a diamond pattern is created where your tape intersects on the wall (this is why your tape needs to be a little longer). this diamond acts as a great guide of where to trim.

IMG_1057.JPG

and here is the whole wall trimmed. i used the pieces of tape that i trimmed of to mark the areas i didn’t want to paint.

i noted a couple points on the picture below where i cut and where i didn’t.

Inspired By Charm

please note that with this method the white chevrons will be thicker than the painted ones.  the tape adds an extra inch on either side. if you want your stripes to be even, you’ll have to adjust your math.

it’s finally time to paint! as i mentioned i used paint i had on hand. one was a light cream/tanish color. the other was a darker grayish brown.

i bought really cheap brushes at walmart. the goal here was to create a linen/burlap look, so i wanted my brush strokes to be very obvious and a cheap brush would give me that look. W

hen painting, i used this cardboard box as my paint palette. i added a little of each color to the box and then painted from there. i mixed both colors as i painted and kept my brush a little on the dry side.

IMG_1078.JPG

this was the look after the first coat.  you can see the variation in color and a little texture starting to happen.  at this point you really couldn’t see any more white where i had painted. even though i kept things light i still had full coverage. this is important to keep the crisp lines important to a good chevron.

IMG_1082.JPG

once everything was dry i went back in with the lighter color.

IMG_1075.JPG

this time i used a very dry brush with just a little paint to give very defined brush strokes.

IMG_1088.JPG

i did this once going vertically.

i then waited for that to dry and did the same thing horizontally.

this gave me a weaved/cross hatch look. i found leaving the paint dry in-between coats is essential or the paint would just smear together and you couldn’t see your brush strokes as well.

IMG_1091.JPG

after that i peeled off my tape (my favorite part).

i then when back through with my white paint and touched up a couple of the areas where pencil dots were exposed or where i accidentally got the colored paint.

finished!

after that, i got my display on!

IMG_1309.JPG

this is an area in my gift shoppe, so it’s obviously decorated a little bit different than i’d decorate my home. this set up is obviously not very functional.

IMG_1303.JPG

but what it lacks in function it makes up for in pure eye candy!

here’s a close up of the chevron texture. love it!

IMG_1300.JPG

changing out display and merchandise in the shoppe is always a fun process for me. but it takes a lot of time and brain power. a lot. i need to make a mess and move everything around until things start to click.

this was probably one of the harder season changes. as i mentioned, i plan to making some changes in the merchandise i carry, so i really had no new items to set-up my mid-winter/spring displays. i was a bit nervous.

Inspired By Charm

when i’m in a situation with little or no new merchandise, i usually look to color to help create my display. for this particular display i used gold, white, cream, rusty metal and a pop of green.

things tend to take on a whole new life when they are paired up differently or used in a different way.

IMG_1305.JPG

would i change things if i had an unlimited budget to buy what i wanted? yes.

but, from nothing to something, i think it looks pretty darn good.

Inspired By Charm

so, that’s it folks, my chevron wall, a tutorial, and a couple little tidbits on how i decorate my shoppe.

IMG_1295.JPG

what do you think?

last week a friend asked whatever happened to a quilt {inspired by charm}. i realized i haven’t talked about it for quite some time. shame on me! i actually haven’t worked on it for a while either so it gave me a little motivation too.

A Quilt {IBC} - more rows

here is the original post for any new followers that have no idea what i’m talking about. i’m at the point where i no longer need fabric. so, thank you, but no need to send anymore.

the quilt is coming along wonderfully. better than i ever expected. and even though i said my ‘dream on’ quilt was my first quilt, this quilt actually is my first quilt. ‘dream on’ was just the first quilt i actually finished.

A Quilt {IBC} ironing

as i now know a little more about quilts, this is essentially a scrap quilt. it’s made up of pieces of you, my followers. all of the fabric used to make this quilt top is from you. thank you, thank you, thank you.

A Quilt {IBC} - rows

all the squares are officially cut. and all the rows are together. i’m currently in the process of paring up the rows. i only have about four more pairs to stitch together.

then, i will pair the pairs to make sections of four rows. like this one.

A Quilt {IBC} four rows

i’ll continue to piece the sections together until its finished. i’m using this pattern.
do you see any of the fabrics you sent?

A Quilt {IBC} two rows

i still have no idea what i’m going to use for the backing. i’m thinking some sorta of black and white polka dot. what do you think? it needs to be simple and work well with the wonderful scrappiness of the top.

i’d really, really like to find something like this (a black and white stripe) for the binding, but i haven’t been super successful yet. i also haven’t searched super well either. i’ll let you know what i come up with.

A Quilt {IBC} - sewing

so that’s where i stand. i’m really, really, really hoping to have it done before summer gets here. i have plans to hang it in my gift shoppe as part of a display to share it’s amazingness with everyone.

either way, i think it looks fierce and i’m so excited to see it come together.

in other news….

thank you for all the amazing ‘ask me’ questions. i’m going to trying and get everything together this weekend to start answering some questions next week.

Inspired By Charm

so, if you do still have some burning questions feel free to continue to leave those in the comments section of that post or via email.

i’m also so overwhelmed at the respond of ‘going american made’ in my gift shoppe. thank you! i’ve already stumbled across some amazing products.

Inspired By Charm

if this all goes well, i’m hoping, over time, to be 100% american made in my shoppe. wouldn’t that be spectacular!? please, please continue to spread the word. tweet it. facebook it. pin it. thank you! thank you!

and finally, the newest issue (issue III) of FOLK magazine is out. this issue happens to contains an amazing 10-page feature on my little inn. yep, 10 freakin’ pages!! talk about a dream come true! i took all the pictures for the feature and wrote the articles to accompany the pictures. it’s somewhat of a day-in-the-life/ making dreams come true/ how did i get here type article.

IMG_1008.JPG

because of this, and because i’ve surpassed 1000 followers and because the editor of FOLK is wonderfully generous, i’m going to have a little giveaway here on monday. you’ll have multiple chances to win a copy of this issue and/or a one year subscription. so be sure to stop over on monday.

this weekend i will be doing some painting (walls not signs), some quilting, some bookkeeping and lots of other fun and not-so-fun things. what do you have planned?

well, the sign is finished and on the wall. it feels good. and to be honest, i absolutely love it. having a one-of-a-kind piece is pretty awesome to me.

Inspired By Charm

so as promised, below is a detailed tutorial on how everything came together. just a warning, this post is going to be a little long. there are a lot, i mean A LOT, of photos. so, i’m going to try and be as brief as possible with my wording. ready?

i started off with two 1x12x8s from the local hardware store. they were about $13 each.

Inspired By Charm

other than some knots they were in pretty good shape. i wanted my wood a little weathered, so i got out some ‘tools of destruction’.

Inspired By Charm

i pounded heavily with both sides of the hammer. sawed the edges. beat it with some chain. i sanded down most of the sharp corners.  (i ended up not really using the screw driver. ) it’s hard to tell in the photos below but you’ll see more of the ‘beaten look’ after the next step.

Inspired By Charm

on pinterest i discovered you could age wood with steel wool and vinegar. after doing some research (it seems there are several ways to do this process) here what i came up with.

in two pans (don’t use good tupperware. oops!) i placed a piece of steel wool. to one added apple cider vinegar, the other balsamic vinegar. no specific amounts here.

Inspired By Charm

i waited about 30 minutes.  then, with rubber gloves, i used the soaked wool to scrub the wood. the picture on the right is the after.

Inspired By Charm

i then did the same with the balsamic and steel wool.

Inspired By Charm

this is how the wood looked after about 15 – 20 minutes.

Inspired By Charm

you can see more of the grain and the markings i made with my tools of destruction are much more obvious.

Inspired By Charm

here’s the wood completely dry. i was really pleased with the results. i will be doing this again for sure.

i’m assuming that you could take it even further if you let the steel wool soak longer. or do more applications.

Inspired By Charm

the wood even took on a speckled look. a friend on facebook, after seeing these pictures, thought it actually was old wood.

Inspired By Charm

then i joined together both pieces of wood, on the back, with joining strips. four of them.

Inspired By Charm

following that, i penciled on my design. i used a plate for the circle of the sun. the rays were just randomly placed. no measurements. i don’t do well with instructions and measurement when it comes to painting. and yes, i’m using a quilting ruler.

Inspired By Charm

i decided to paint my red outlines first. though, looking back, it may have been easier to put these in last.

Inspired By Charm

a sun! things are finally taking shape.

Inspired By Charm

i then applied some blue painters tape to preserve the red lines. i had to paint over the red that the tape didn’t cover so that it wouldn’t show throw my other paint. this is when i realized it may have been better to paint the red last. oh well, lesson learned.

Inspired By Charm

i then picked a random collection of blues and yellows to fill in the rays of the sun.

Inspired By Charm

i intentionally wasn’t perfect when i was painting, leaving some of my weather wood showing through.

Inspired By Charm

i purposely avoided the nicks and dents i made earlier. i used cheap foam brushes to apply my paint.

Inspired By Charm

another thing i hate about painting is cleaning up. when i was done, the brushes went in the trash.

Inspired By Charm

once everything was dry, who am i kidding… i have no patience, before everything was dry, i removed the tape to expose my beautiful red lines. perfect!

Inspired By Charm

next i gave everything i quick sand and then applied a white wash. just a mix of water and white paint. i worked quickly and wiped the paint with an old towel as i went. this gave me a sun faded look.

Inspired By Charm

i felt needed a few more distressed elements on the piece so i used a fork to create some worm/bug holes.

Inspired By Charm

i then went over the whole piece with a dark wash, just like the white wash. for this i used burnt umber paint and water.

Inspired By Charm

this darker color settled into all the distressed marks giving me a really aged and weathered look.

Inspired By Charm

done! well, the background anyway. next, i needed to add the text.

Inspired By Charm

i used a word processing program on my computer (iStudio) to pick fonts i liked. i then printed out a couple test pieces to get the size of the front right. the main font is haettenschweller and the script font is zapfino.

Inspired By Charm

once i had everything printed out, i cut and taped the pieces of paper together.

Inspired By Charm

i then shaded in the back of the paper with the printed text. i used a pencil to color everything in.  personally, this works best for me. i’ve tried chalk (rubs off to easy) and carbon paper (turns your paint blue). this is time consuming and a pain-in-the-you-know-what, but it works.

once the back is shaded in, i flipped the paper over and positioned it onto the sign. i then trace the letters. this tracing transfers the shading you just did to the sign creating an outline for you to paint. make sense?

Inspired By Charm

then i painted! i do mix in a couple drops of water to my white paint for an easy and smooth application.

Inspired By Charm

yes, i’m a lefty. any other lefties out there?!

i bought these paint brushes at wal-mart and have found a couple that work well for me. these i do wash and keep.

Inspired By Charm

i gave all the letters two coats of paint with a very light sanding in between. then, i erased any visible pencil lines.

Inspired By Charm

and that’s it! complete! ain’t she purdy?

Inspired By Charm

i choose to not put any sort of top coat on the piece as it will be indoors.

to hang it, i drilled two small holes into the back of the wood. then i put two screws into the wall. i put the holes on the screws and the sign was securely hung! or so i hope.

Inspired By Charm

like i said, i love unique, one-of-a-kind pieces and if this isn’t one of them, then i don’t know what is. the whole thing cost me under $35. i basically had to buy the wood, steel wool, joining strips and a couple brushes.

Inspired By Charm

and the style, colors and sentiment are a perfect fit for the space.

Inspired By Charm

and even though my head is way to big for this hat, i’m pretty darn pleased with my work.

Inspired By Charm

i hope this little tutorial was helpful. let me know if you have questions.

do you think you’ll be making a sign of your own?

Inspired By Charm

so i think i’ve created a new recipe! …at least as far as i know. with so many talented people out there, and outlets to share those talent,s it’s becoming harder to create something that is truly original.  this recipe came about from a mash up of two other recipes i’ve used in the past. the result is a really simple and delicious breakfast pastry, dessert or coffee-sipping-snack. i call them berry danish minis.

berry danish minis

aren’t they cute? for what they lack in size they make up for in flavor! do you immediately want to make some of your own? good, let’s get started.

here’s what you’ll need….

1 package pillsbury crescent rolls (or one of those new fancy crescent sheet things)

4 oz softened cream cheese

1/4 tsp vanilla

1 1/2 tbs sugar

1/2 cup jam OR 1/2 cup fresh berries (mashed and mixed with 1 tbs sugar)

[for this recipe i used 1/4 cup cherry jam and 1/4 cup blueberrie/blackberries. i wanted to try both]

step one: preheat oven to 350. open your crescent rolls and split at the seam into two sections. unroll unto a lightly floured surface.

berry danish minis - step 1

step two: seal the seams with your fingers. roll out dough until about 1/4 inch thick.

step three: combined softened cream cheese, sugar and vanilla. spread evenly onto both pieces of dough.

IMG_0413.JPG

step four: spread jam OR mashed berry/sugar mixture on top of cream cheese.

berry danish minis - step 2

step five: roll up dough lengthwise.

berry danish minis - step 3

step six: sliced rolled dough into eight even sections.

step seven: place cut sections into a lightly greased mini muffin tin.

berry danish minis - step 4

step eight: bake for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown on top. then, allow to cool in pan for about five minutes.

berry danish minis - baked

step nine: remove from pan and lightly sprinkle with powdered sugar.

berry danish minis - powdered sugar

step ten: devour

berry danish minis - 2

talk about yumminess! and super easy, right? told ya!

berry danish minis - step 3

so what do you think? will you be giving my berry danish minis a try? i sure hope!

Over the past week or so I hit up some nearby antique shops and found several really cool finds with pretty amazing price tags. So I thought I’d share two of them (both currently hung in my kitchen) with you today and I’ll share the rest when they find a more permanent home.

First, I found these red shutters at this really odd shop that’s only open during the holidays. This woman and/or man collects the most uniquely odd, yet beautiful, things all year and then sells them at christmas time.

The store is seriously magic. I missed the first weekend this year, but you can bet next year I’ll be the first in line! the store is called chris moose. more info here.

The color is just amazing and I love the little topiary detail. The best part is I only paid $12 for two shutters! Amazing! I think I looked at the price tag like twenty times to make sure i was reading it right.

Inspired By Charm

Then, to add some holiday cheer, i found this vintage red and green santa apron.

Inspired By Charm

It was sorta odd to photograph … my camera wasn’t being nice with all the light coming in from the window. but the details are beautiful and it’s in great shape. When christmas is over I found another apron (which is the fabric my fudge is setting on) to replace this one.

Inspired By Charm

Both aprons, only $5 each! I’m usually try to work them down in price a little bit (even though i’m not very good at it), but when things like this are more than reasonable, I’m happy to pay.

What do you think? Have you purchase any unique antiques lately?

Antiquing with Charm: No. 1

Over the past week or so I hit up some nearby antique shops and found several really cool finds with pretty amazing price tags. So I thought I’d share two of them (both currently hung in my kitchen) with you today and I’ll share the rest when they find a more permanent home. First, I […]

Yep, it’s after november 1st so christmas is in full swing… around here at least.

Last year after christmas, I picked up a brand new 4 foot tall pink christmas tree for around $10. i mean come on, who could resist? Over the past year i’ve been thinking about where to put it and how to decorate it.

Well,  I made a few decisions. First, I want to make every decoration/ornament for the tree. This includes the garland, ornaments, tree topper and skirt. Now, this doesn’t have to happen all within the next two months. I’m perfectly happy to piece it together over a couple years. Second,  I wanted to use vintage sheets as my theme. Perfect!

Yesterday i got started on the first round of ornaments. I have about 15 or so that are about 80% finished so I can’t share them with you quite yet. But soon.

In the meantime, thanks to the search feature on pinterest, I thought I’d share some other holiday decorations, inspired by pink! enjoy!

a new project

Uncategorized

last week i bought another new magazine. i know, i have problems, but that’s not the point. so, this is the magazine a i got.

Inspired By Charm

christmas ideas from better homes and gardens.  first, i have to tell you, if you only buy one ‘christmas magazine’ (other than FOLK, of course) then you NEED to buy this issue.

i can’t tell you how many wonderful, new, inspired and ah-mazing ideas are packed into this magazine. seriously amazing. i restrained myself from taking pictures of every page, but i did want to share two things.

first, love this use of three cloches.

Inspired By Charm

consider this another idea to my list of new uses for cloches.

second, this issue features the uber talented layla and kevin from the lettered cottage. i’ve always loved their house and projects. their spread in this issue is just brilliant. i’m in love with their holiday decor.

Inspired By Charm

i mean, come on! right!?

Inspired By Charm

so back to my point, when i saw the cover of the magazine, i noticed these festive appliquéd pillows and feel in love. i knew i had to make them, but i wanted to give them my own little twist.

Inspired By Charm

instead of using white fabric i wanted something a bit more colorful. the pillows will be used on some accent chairs in my dining room so i wanted them to match all the festiveness of my dining room christmas decor

i decided i’d use material from vintage sheets. i visited one of my favorite etsy shops and found exactly what i wanted.

Inspired By Charm

pretty amazing, right? the shop owner, jeni from in color order, is not only the sweetest, but she is incredibly talented. the projects she creates on her blog blow my mind. she also has the cutest bunny, george. if you haven’t been to her blog yet, stop on over and say, ‘hi’!

Inspired By Charm

i’m hoping to have these finished up before christmas and will definitely be sharing the results. so stay tuned!

do you have any fun diy project planned for the holidays?

some of you have may already guessed this from previous posts, but i’ve never really mentioned it officially until now. sometimes i’m nervous to say things until i’m certain they are going to happen. (i’m kind of cursed with bad luck.) anyway,

i’m going to be in a magazine!!

i’m am beyond thrilled and still find it hard to believe. for years and years a goal/dream of mine has been to be in a magazine. and that dream is coming true! i just can’t believe it.

the magazine is called FOLK. they released their first issue in september. issue two, the christmas issue will be released in early november. the issue is currently being printed and the beautiful cover of the magazine was just released!

i’ve been asked to be a contributor to each issue of the magazine which is printed six times per year. my column is appropriately titled ‘inspired by: _____’  the blank space will change based on what the column is inspired by.  pretty amazing, right!?

for issue two, the christmas issue, i have a beautiful diy project for christmas! you. will. die! i just love the way it came together. i also shared a couple other ideas, including a cookie recipe. so hopefully there will be more inspiration from me scattered among it’s pages.

Inspired By Charm

i’m am truly humbled and honored to be a part of this magazine. i’m so thankful to FOLK for making a dream come true. i’m also thankful for all of you readers and followers for allowing me to share my voice and ideas. your support and comments mean more to me than you’ll ever know! thank you!

Inspired By Charm

below is some general information about getting your hands on a copy of this magazine.

there’s nothing better than a yummy recipe. wait. that’s a lie. let me rephrase … there’s nothing better than a yummy recipe that’s easy to make.

i’ve had this recipe for a couple years now and for some reason i never made it. i tore it out of a magazine at some point. pillsbury i believe.

Inspired By Charm

the recipe is as follows….

twists:

1/2 cup finely chopped pecans

tablespoons granulated sugar

teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg

cans (8 oz each) Pillsbury® refrigerated crescent dinner rolls

tablespoons butter or margarine, melted

glaze:

1/2 cup powdered sugar

1/4 teaspoon maple flavor

2 to 3 teaspoons milk

directions:

heat oven to 375°F. ppray 1 large or 2 small cookie sheets with cooking spray. in small bowl, mix pecans, granulated sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg.

unroll both cans of dough; separate into 8 rectangles. firmly press perforations to seal.

brush each rectangle with melted butter. sprinkle 1 tablespoon pecan-sugar mixture evenly over each rectangle; press in lightly. starting at longer side, roll up each rectangle; pinch edges to seal.

with sharp knife, cut one roll in half lengthwise, forming 2 strips. with cut side up, carefully overlap strips 2 times to form twist. press ends together to seal. place on cookie sheet. repeat with remaining dough. sprinkle with any remaining pecan-sugar mixture.

bake 10 to 15 minutes or until golden brown.

in small bowl, mix glaze ingredients until smooth, adding enough milk for desired drizzling consistency. drizzle over warm rolls. serve warm!

Inspired By Charm

so, i was busy making these at 4:30AM so i don’t have any ‘in progress’ photos, just the results. which, like i said, yummy and easy. no mixer + no yeast = great early morning baking!

in other news, check out the amazing collection of glass cloches (or bell jars… or glass domes) that arrived the shoppe today!

Inspired By Charm

aren’t they beautiful!? oh, the possibilities! unless shannon breaks in and steals them all.

i just love when inspiration sneak ups and smacks you in the face with a good idea! a couple weekends ago i found a large vintage embroidery hoop at an antique shop. i had no idea what i’d do with it, but i decided to buy it anyway… and it was only $10. what a deal!

this weekend i was looking at the empty hoop and was inspired to create a new fall display with it … complete with a spider web.

Inspired By Charm

if i have to say so myself, i really pleased with the results! unique, fresh, fun, and colorful! what more could i ask for?

so here’s how the spider web hoop came together.

first, if you don’t have an vintage embroidery hoop laying around, you can easily use a new embroidery hoop from your local fabric shop. feel free to age it with some stain or paint if you wish.

next, using white yarn, i tied six strings of fabric onto the inner portion of the embroidery hoop. when tying on your strings, be sure they all intersect at one common point. i decided i wanted my intersection point to be off centered. then, reattach the outer hoop.

Inspired By Charm

once that’s done you need to start creating the web. cut a piece of yard and attach it, with a knot, to one of the strings on your hoop. starting towards the center, work in a clockwise fashion (or in my case counterclockwise) attaching your yarn to each piece of string on your hoop.

Inspired By Charm

it may take a couple times for you to get the tension right between each string. just keep trying. i had a hard time at first but after a couple tries i got a rhythm and the whole thing came together nicely and fairly quickly.

Inspired By Charm

once you finish one row, start a new row, with a new piece of string.

Inspired By Charm

as you continue to add rows, pull the string from you newly added rows outward to create more tension between the strings.

Inspired By Charm

continue  adding rows of yarn until you are satisfied with the look.

Inspired By Charm

and you’ll have a super cute spider web! i also added one of those really cute spiders from my shoppe to complete the look!

Inspired By Charm

for the rest of the display i made some paint dipped pumpkins! i admittley started off by actually dipping the pumpkins in paint. FAIL. i had to use a lot of paint, the process was really messy and trying to get them to dry all the way around with out dripping wasn’t easy.

Inspired By Charm

instead i placed the pumpkin upside down on a drinking glass and used a small foam brush and just painted the pumpkin. the crisp edge on the foam brush gave me a clean line and no brush strokes. plus there was no mess and the pumpkin could dry completely on the glass.

Inspired By Charm

once dry, i arranged my little display adding in some glass cloches and black pillar candle holders. and that’s it! a festive new display.

Inspired By Charm

as always, i’d love to know what you think! how’d i do? will you be trying either of these projects?

in keeping with all things new this month, and since several of you asked about my little acorns, i decided to share a new tutorial with you. (not that a tutorial is really needed as this process is pretty much self explanatory.)

Inspired By Charm

somewhere on the internet i saw the cutest little painted acorns. i had to try making some for myself. i used these acorns for a very cool christmasy project which, i’m unfortunatley unable to share with you just yet. but don’t worry, i will as soon as i can.

so the first step in the process is to get some acorns. i’m assuming there is a tree around you somewhere. if not, do like i did and buy them on ebay. (sad, but true.)

Inspired By Charm

about 75% of the acorns i got were already topless (oh my!). so those are the ones i choose to paint. the others with their tops in tact, i just left alone.

choose a spray paint color, i used burgundy and red, and get to spraying.

Inspired By Charm

I found it best to place the acorn upside down where their little hats would normally be. this way, they aren’t rolling around and you are able to cover the entire acorn with paint. it doesn’t matter if the tops are not painted, since you won’t see them once you reattach their little hats.

Inspired By Charm

next, match up your painted acorns bottoms to hats that seem to fit and look appropriate.

Inspired By Charm

then add a small amount of hot glue to the hats and attach to the bottom. pretty simple.

Inspired By Charm

and that’s it! painted acorns! too freakin’ cute, right?

Inspired By Charm

and the uses for these are endless! use them as vase fillers, tie them onto a package as decoration, hang them as ornaments on a mini christmas tree, photograph them and use the picture as a button for a ‘31 days series‘ ….

Inspired By Charm

… or scatter some around a buffet table like i did! it’s all in the details.

Inspired By Charm

what do you think? will you be making some painted acorns?

and be sure to check back sometime in november to see my ‘secret project’ where i used these lovely little acorns! you won’t be disappointed.

the past two days have been beautiful here. the perfect fall weather. mid 60s, cool nights and mornings, and the sun shinning with no clouds in sight! it’s giving me a chance to finish up some much needed plant removing, weeding and general yard work.

with all the summer flowers slowly dying i decided to add a fresh bouquet to my front door. a new fall wreath.

Inspired By Charm

i have been putting together wreaths since high school. yep, you read that right, high school. i’m no expert wreath maker, but i do an okay job and i’m pretty pleased with the results. and i actually really enjoy the process.

Inspired By Charm

i just start with a plain grapevine wreath and work around with flowers and greenery… or in this case yellowery. i just force the stems into the grapevine. no hot glue or wire required. this way, at the end of the season, i can take everything out of the wreath and start fresh! pretty simple, right?

Inspired By Charm

and did you notice the crow at the top? he’s my favorite part,  kind of cute and unexpected.

Inspired By Charm

and that’s it! a new fall wreath.

typically i’m not particularly excited for fridays to come. as an innkeeper/small business owner, the weekends are as busy, if not busier, than the actual week. but today is different. i’ve been waiting for this friday to come for a while. why? well, i’ll give you a hint … remember that really cool thing i did last year? i may just be going to another one! yep! but, don’t worry i’ll share all the details next week.

in the meantime, i wanted to tell you about two other things (if you didn’t already know). the lovely and super amazing alicia of poise gets cozy has just released her new ornament kits for this year!

Inspired By Charm

beautiful, right? i’ve always been such a big fan of these kits, but never ordered one. i guess they always seemed ‘out of my league.’ so maybe i’m feeling more confident in my abilities …. and i think it would be a wonderful collection to have, so i decided to order the first two kits. this one has always been a favorite of mine.

Inspired By Charm

i probably would have ordered all four kits (as i’m the biggest impulse buyer [my brain seems to go on vacation when i shop – not good!]) but at $30 each i really couldn’t. so i’m banking on the fact more of the kits will be available next year. fingers crossed.

in other news… have you seen jen’s new bathroom sinks!?

Inspired By Charm

ah-freakin-mazing!! right? she cut a table in half and turned it into two bathroom sinks! if this wasn’t a ‘pee in my pants’ moment, then i don’t know what is. and maybe i’m getting overly excited, as i do sometimes, but i just love this. jen definitely has a creative mind and a talented hand (have you see her signs) and i just love folks like that. i just wish she didn’t live halfway across the country, because i think we could be good friends.

anyway, head on over to her blog and check out her entire bathroom remodel. simple gorgeous!

hope you all have an amazing weekend! did you know that today is the first day of fall!? another reason to celebrate this friday!

lordy, lordy. things have been crazy around here. is your summer going as quickly as mine? it’s hard to believe we’ve already passed the fourth of july. it’s like the beginning of the end. but, i must say, even though it’s been a bit busy, my summer as been quite enjoyable and the weather has been just as great! which is quite shocking.

last week i cooked up another batch of jam. strawberry lemonade.

Inspired By Charm

let me tell you, its quite delicious. especially warmed up and served over ice cream. yum.

Inspired By Charm

i basically used the standard recipe for strawberry jam and added fresh lemon juice, lemon zest and a bottle of simply lemonade. i’d give you the recipe but i really don’t have one. this is how my jams usually come about.

last week i got a couple orders for the gift shoppe. included were these adorable mercury glass ducks.

Inspired By Charm

a bit of whimsy is a must in any house. don’t you think?

Inspired By Charm

i may just need to keep a set of these guys for myself.

so i usually don’t get all wrapped up in ‘all things wedding’ but i stumbled across photos of this bohemian rainbow inspired wedding (via this blog) and they nearly took my breath away.

i obviously take no credit for these photographs. they are all from the amazing folks over at three nails photography. they have a blog full of amazing images.

so on sunday, when i went to wrap my dad’s father’s day present, i realized i didn’t have any appropriate wrapping paper. in fact, the only wrapping paper i had was paper from last christmas. yikes!

so i put my thinking cap on, and here’s what i came up with.

Inspired By Charm

not to shabby, right?

luckily, since i put together baskets here at old charm, i usually have plenty or ribbon on hand. so i took my left over christmas paper and used the back of it as a blank slate.

Inspired By Charm

using some black paint and an empty half pint jar i covered the paper with circles.

Inspired By Charm

after it dried, i wrapped it all up with some ribbon and viola!

Inspired By Charm

pretty perfect, right?

Inspired By Charm

now i know i’m not the mastermind that originally came up with this idea, but i thought i’d share my creation anyway.

Inspired By Charm

how’d i do?
