Two weekends ago I was invited by Buick to fly out to Detroit and check out their newest vehicle, the Encore. This was all part of an event by Buick called Pinboard to Dashboard. They invited ten extraordinary bloggers to be a part of this experience.

After arriving in Detroit, all of the bloggers met for dinner and drinks. (A huge thanks to Buick for their superior hospitality). The following day we had the opportunity to tour the Buick Design Center and learn about the Encore. What an experience!

Inspired By Charm

Not only did we get a sneak peak inside the Color Studio, we also got to hear all about this fabulous new vehicle.

After listening to the presentation, I was sold. Truth be told, I’m actually in the market for a new vehicle. The car I’m driving now is the same one I was driving my first year of college. That was almost 12 years ago, and it was a used vehicle when I got it. Yikes!

Anyway, I believe that things happen for a reason. I would have most likely never considered or even looked at a Buick. My grandparents always drove a Buick. While I loved their cars, I associated Buick with older people (No offense Gram and Pop.) or luxury that was out of my reach. Here’s the thing. After hearing about the Encore and why it was designed, I realized this vehicle was created for someone just like me. Buick is has a whole new image! I want and need a car that has room for me to throw in all my purchases after a day of antiquing. Though, I don’t want a huge vehicle that is hard to drive and maneuver. It needs to handle well. After working very hard and saving for so long, I want a vehicle that I am proud to drive. I also want to feel a little pampered. I mean, come on, who doesn’t want Intellilink, Park Assist, Pandora, Bose speakers, heated leather seats and steering wheel, and so much more. Surprisingly, all of this is actually achievable in my price range. I also want a vehicle that has a sophisticated yet sporty style. This is it, people! It’s luxury minus the snobbishness. Get it?

It goes without saying that come Spring when I’m ready to make my first-ever new car purchase, I will be stopping at the Buick dealership first.

Inspired By Charm

After the presentation, Buick asked us to create Pinterest boards to represent our dream Buick Encore concept. What color would the exterior be? What would the interior look like? What would we do in our Encore? Where would we go? Who would go with us? What would we be listening to?

Two major things stood out for me from the presentation, and I knew they had to be a part of my design plan. First, I heard an amazing quote, “A life of significance, not status.” This was a total goose bump-worthy moment. The words rang so true to what I want out of life. Second, again as part of the presentation, folks were interviewed about what they wanted in a car and in life general. Every person said they just wanted to be happy. Above all, happiness was most important.

So, with these two thoughts in mind, plus a whole lot of Michael and Inspired by Charm style, I got to work and designed a car concept that I am proud of and passionate about. I hope you like it just as much as I do.

To make things a little easier to explain, I divided up my concept into five sections. All of these images were pulled from my Pinboard to Dashboard Pinterest board. If you need the source of any of these images, all of them can be found there.

Inspired By Charm

Exterior: A big part of my overall design was to bring back beautiful pieces, designs, and ideas from the past, while still keeping the technology, feel, and style of today. (Much like how I like to decorate my interior spaces.) For the exterior, I pulled inspiration from Buick’s history. All of the cars (not the truck) in the images above are Buick. My Encore would be painted and trimmed to resemble these classics. A beautiful turquoise, a splash of creamy white, and lots of chrome bling. Are you seeing it?

Inspired By Charm

Interior: Moving inside the car, I’m thinking yellow! Yellow is my happy color. It makes me come alive; it makes me smile. Yellow leather with touches of teal, including some beautiful and unique stitching (details Buick is proud of). Of course, in true Inspired by Charm style, there would be a little bit of chevron, but not in an overpowering zig zag kind of way, a bit more subtle. I’d finish things off with some tufting and more chrome bling.

Inspired By Charm

Significance: To go with this fabulous design, my concept needs a purpose. I have dreams of driving across the country. Right now, I live in a small town in Central Pennsylvania. I’ve had the opportunity to meet some of the most amazing people online thanks to this blog and social media, but something is missing. I want to meet you all in person. So, here’s my plan. Get an adorable little trailer (we’ll talk more about that in a minute), pack it full of supplies including some fantastic food, and hit the road. A crosscountry adventure! When Buick asked who I wanted in my Encore, I knew my answer immediately. YOU! I want to take loads of pictures. I want to eat dinner in a field. I want to find the most incredible donut in America. I want to create beautiful memories. I want to see this beautiful country that I’m so proud to be a part of. Sounds pretty cool, right? Who’s with me?

Inspired By Charm

Music: This was easy. Music is such a huge part of my life. This is only a sampling of the the music I will be rocking out and chilling out to. As I mentioned above, in addition to my classic design, I want modern technology in my EncoreHere’s where this comes into play. I’ll talk more about this below, but my concept would be a social media powerhouse. I want to use it as a tool to stay connected along my journey. Part of that powerhouse would involve a feature where all of you could create playlists and make music suggestions for my journey. How awesome would that be? I love discovering new music, and I think this would be an amazing way to do it. Then when I get to my destination, we could pop the trunk and dance along to our favorite tunes over dinner in a field. Are you seeing it now?

Inspired By Charm

Accessories: This is when the fun begins. First, let’s talk about that adorable trailer. Unless I win the lottery, I’m going to need a place to sleep along my journey. How perfect would it be to have a matching teardrop trailer. Just enough room to sleep, store a picnic basket, and make a cup of coffee, right? It will be glamping (glamorous camping) at its finest. Also, as I mentioned above, I want this to be a social media powerhouse. (Yes, most of these features will only be available for use by a passenger or while the Encore is in park. Safety is important.) I would love to see a 360 degree camera placed on the roof of the vehicle. Perfect for taking impromptu photos on the road with a click of the button on the steering wheel. With ultimate connectivity, at the next rest stop, these photos could easily be uploaded to Facebook or Instagram. For those twitterholics out there, voiceactivated tweeting could also be implemented so that thoughts while driving will never be lost again. Sounds fun, right? It’s all about the accessories.

So, that’s my design concept in a nutshell. What do you think? Would you travel with me? Will you join me for dinner? Can I crash at your place along my journey?

Although, I may not be able to make this vision happen exactly as planned above, a cross-country trip is on my Bucket List. I’m not sure when or how, but be on the look out!

A ginormous thanks to Buick and their team for this amazing experience. I will be forever grateful. This is a big deal for a guy from Central Pennsylvania. Also, thank you for reintroducing me to the Buick brand. I am honestly and utterly impressed.

You folks are the best! Seriously. Thanks for all the comments and support you shared in yesterday’s post. I can’t tell you how much I appreciate that. I also wanted to add that I’m not giving up on happiness or my quest for it, just changing my approach. So have no fear, you will still find lots of happy and fun things here. I’m just removing the pressure of blogging about it for fifteen more days. I hope that makes sense.

I still have to digest my trip to Detroit, which I know some of you are curious about. I’ll have more details in the next few days. For now, you are welcome to follow along on Pinterest. Basically, I’m designing a car. (Unfortunately not a car I will actually get to keep.)  Head on over to Pinterest and check that out. I’ll be sharing more details soon.

It’s been a while since I posted a recipe, so today I thought I’d share one of my favorites. I worked with another company to create some images for a fall-inspired project. This was the resulting recipe without the added company details.

Inspired By Charm

Anyway, this is hands-down one of my favorite dips. Not only is it delicious, but it’s amazingly easy and a huge crowd pleaser.

Inspired By Charm

I wish I could take credit for coming up with this recipe, but the wonderful folks at Knorr are the true creators and I mentally thank them every time I make it. If you haven’t tried this before, give it a try. You won’t be disappointed! Enjoy.

Inspired By Charm

Here’s what you’ll need:
1 10-oz package frozen chopped spinach, thawed and squeezed dry
1 16-oz container sour cream
1 cup mayonnaise
1 8-oz package vegetable soup mix
1 8-oz can water chestnuts, drained and chopped
3 green onions, chopped (optional)

Let’s get cooking:
Combine all ingredients in a bowl.
Cover and chill in the refrigerator about 2 hours.
Serve with blue tortilla chips or your favorite dipper. This is delicious in a bread bowl with cubes of bread as dippers.

Have an amazing day, everyone!

For me, fall is the beginning of the holiday season. It’s the time of year when a house really becomes a home. People move inside and get a little closer. We tend to gather around the table just a bit more. Food really takes center stage and we all put on a few extra pounds to keep our bodies and hearts just a little bit warmer. It’s also the time of year when seasonal decor and decorating is in its prime. It’s when we take time to showcase our joys, style, and personality.

I love seasonal decorating. Just the thought of it literally makes my heart flutter. I can remember years ago when I was just a little kid, some of my favorite memories were picking out pumpkins, bales of straw, and cornstalks and tucking them in the corner of the porch at my childhood home. We’d hang those colorful cardboard cutouts in the windows – a witch in front of a moon or a black cat on a jack-o-lantern.

While I still do a little seasonal decorating, it’s definitely something that has been put on the back burner as life gets busier. Life is so busy anymore, it seems that a lot of holidays and special events are gone before you notice. Do you know what I mean? I remember last year I barely decorated for Christmas. I miss those days when I would spend the day or weekend shopping and decorating with my mom.(Yes, even as a young boy I had a thing for decorating.) They are some of my best and happiest memories. This year I’ve decided to make seasonal decorating fun again. To make more happy decorating memories instead of treating it like a job or a pain in the you-know-what. I want that flutter and excitement in my heart again. So today, I’m making a little ‘happiness pledge’ to MAKE time for the seasonal decorating I loved as a child – and enjoy every minute of it! Who’s with me?

I shared this post last week via The Idea Room. With my new proclamation, I thought it would be the perfect time to share it here on IBC. I hope you enjoy it again or for the first time. Let’s decorate!

…………………………………..

Today I have twelve mini-projects to share with you. Yep, twelve! Old books and old book pages are popping up everywhere in blogland and the craft world. So I decided to take this idea and give it a festive twist. If you remember, last week I shared all of these idea with my blogger pal Amy of The Idea Room. I felt it was such a fun and easy project, that I wanted to share it here as well.

To get started, I picked up a couple old books at a local thrift shop. (Book lovers, cover your eyes.) I tore out a few pages from the books and then grabbed my laptop. I hit up one of my favorite clip art galleries, The Graphics Fairy, and downloaded all the Halloween-related images.

Using two small pieces of double stick tape, I attached one book page to the center of a piece of standard card stock.

Using the word processing program on my computer, I selected one of the clip art images and printed it on the book page taped to the card stock.

Inspired By Charm

Simple as that! I repeated those steps for all my images. With a stack of embellished book pages in hand, I started to get crafty. Let’s get going!

No. 1: Place Cards
Just add a name in your word processor before printing your page (or write it in later) and then cut to fit.

No. 2: Vase Update
I have this great rectangular vase that was begging to be jazzed up. I just cut around the printed image and attached it to the vase with double stick tape.

No. 3: Wall Décor Accent
I have a display of plates and mirrors in my dinning room. I simply tucked in a few of the book pages for a spooky new look! This could be done to anything hanging, be it a frame, mirror, or other wall decoration.

No. 4: Decorative Jar Candle
Have a simple looking candle? Wrap it with an embellished book page. After cutting out the image, I attached it with double stick tape.

Inspired By Charm

No. 5: Vintage Wreath

This one is a piece of cake. Just tuck a printed page into your favorite wreath for an instant vintage touch.

No. 6: Put a Cloche on It!
Slide a mini-pumpkin and one of the pages under a cloche. Anything under a cloche always looks special and important.

Inspired By Charm

No. 7:  Candle Wrap
Trim the page so there is just enough to wrap around the candle. I used double stick tape to affix the page. Being tall and skinny, the skeleton key graphic worked perfectly. Use caution if you do decide to light these as old paper and flames don’t really go well together.

Inspired By Charm

Inspired By Charm

No. 8. Jazz up Your Jam
I thought the paper would rip on this one, but it couldn’t have worked better! Cut a square out of your paper with your image centered. Place it on top of your jar lid and screw on the top. I then added a fun label to make the presentation even more special. In case you were wondering, that’s peach jam.

Inspired By Charm

No. 9: Art Swap
This is another easy one. Swap out a piece of artwork for one of the pages, or add it on top of a piece of artwork that may be a little larger than the printed page.

Inspired By Charm

No. 10: Specimen Jars
These vintage mason jars are always coming in handy for me. After I printed the orange and black butterflies, I trimmed the pages to size and tucked them into the jars. These would look great all year long.

Inspired By Charm

Inspired By Charm

No. 11: Boring to Bold
It’s all in the details! Take a boring glass of striped drinking straws over-the-top by sliding in a page printed with skeletons. It doesn’t get any easier than this!

Inspired By Charm

No. 12: Goodie Bags
Last but not least, turn an old book page into a fun label for treats. I folded my page in half at the top of the label and cut it out, making sure not to cut the fold. Again, using double stick tape on both sides of the interior of my label, I attached it to a bag full of yummy pumpkin kisses.

Inspired By Charm

That’s it! Simple, but totally fabulous and unexpected. It really is all about the details. I hope you can use some of these ideas for your Halloween and fall decorating. What other ideas do you have for embellished book pages?

Last week I posted my Ode to Oz as part of Eighteen25’s Spooktacular September. Thank you so much to everyone who visited and shared such wonderful comments. Since I’m totally in love with this display, I wanted to also include it here on Inspired by Charm. Thrilled as I am to do a guest post for such amazing folks, I’m always a little bummed when I can’t share it here as well. So, I’m breaking all the rules and posting it again. Feel free to skip over this if you wish, or take another look to find things you may have missed. I even included new (and some of my favorite) photos from the shoot. Enjoy! Thanks again everyone!

Today, I wanted to share a little Halloween decorating I did in my dining room. While I love pumpkins, spiders, and ghosts, I decided to take a slightly  less traditional approach this year.

For inspiration, I turned to one of my all-time favorite movies, The Wizard of Oz. You see, I’ve had a love for this movie for quite some time. I played the scarecrow in my grade-school musical, and don’t even get me started on Wicked! Love it!

Inspired By Charm

Anyway, a couple months ago I hung some new shelves in my dining room. I wanted a little area that I could decorate seasonally with the things I love. This summer I created a Lemonade Stand and a Coffee Bar.

Inspired By Charm

So, I cleared my shelves and got to work. Except for some green vases I picked up at Goodwill for a few dollars, I created my Ode to Oz with items I already had on hand. Let’s follow the yellow brick road and see what I created.

Inspired By Charm

Pretty fabulous, right?
Inspired By Charm

Are you seeing any Oz-inspired items? Let’s take a closer look.

Inspired By Charm

A diploma (an old book page wrapped with a ribbon) and a crow represent the Scarecrow, while funnels and a heart on the print in the background stand for the Tin Man.

For the print, I found a black and white image of a farmhouse online and just printed it out on my printer.

The Lion makes his appearance in a crown and an actual gold lion I found at Pier1 a few months ago.

Inspired By Charm

The green vases that I picked up at Goodwill along with a green Ball jar create the Emerald City.

Inspired By Charm

While this display is lacking ruby slippers, some red roses and votive candle holders add color and sparkle. A piece of blue-and-white checked fabric tied onto a bucket (perfect for throwing water on witches) screams Dorothy.

Inspired By Charm

Speaking of witches, I included some brooms, a few winged monkeys (that look a little like bats), and an apple, perhaps from an enchanted talking tree.

Inspired By Charm

Even Glinda makes an appearance with some silver wand-like picks mixed with Indian corn.

Inspired By Charm

To finish everything off, I added a few more flowers – yellow daisies. Follow the yellow brick road!

Inspired By Charm
That’s it! My fall/Halloween Ode to Oz display!

Inspired By Charm

Inspired By Charm

What do you think? Regardless of your knowledge of The Wizard of Oz, I think this display is festive, colorful, happy, and a whole lot of fun!

Inspired By Charm

Clearly, I had a hard time containing my own excitement as I’m photo bombing my own photo.

Inspired By Charm

I hope all of you enjoyed my display and are feeling a little more inspired. If you are not a fan of The Wizard of Oz, feel free to use this idea for any of your favorite movies!

Inspired By Charm

If you do a similar display, please link it up in  the comments or shoot me an email. I’d love to see what you created!

Thanks again for bearing with my little repost. I hope you enjoyed it just as much as the first time.

Fall Cookie Week Roundup:

Monday – Chocolate Cherry Cookies
Tuesday – Pumpkin Blondies
Wednesday – White Chocolate Cranberry Oatmeal Cookies
Thursday – Pumpkin Krispies
Friday – Caramel Stuffed Apple Cider Cookies
Saturday – Pumpkin Blossoms

Well folks, the end is here, at least for actual cookie recipes. Today is the final day! Can you believe it? I really hope you enjoyed Fall Cookie Week and discovered some new recipes.

Don’t forget tomorrow there will be a Fall Baking Link Party. Stop by and share your fall baked goodies. On Monday, I will announce all of the giveaway winners including Lost Crates (which is now ended), the Fall Basket, and the Goose Creek Candles. Sound good?

All right, last but not least, today’s cookie is what I’m calling a Pumpkin Blossom. You may have seen this cute cookie floating around Pinterest. So did I.

Inspired By Charm

A couple weeks ago when I was at the store I finally found a few bags of Pumpkin Spice Kisses. I immediately snatched them up. I’m so glad I did because I haven’t seen them since.

The recipe I used comes from Pass the Sushi. I changed the spices around a bit because I couldn’t find dry chai spice mix. I could have made it, but I wasn’t about to pay $10 for a bottle of cardamom.

The results are fabulous! This was probably the most popular cookie at my Gift Shoppe Open House.

Here’s what you’ll need:

1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened

1/2 cup sugar

1/4 cup liquid chai concentrate (I used Tazo brand.)

1 large egg

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice

1/2  teaspoon cinnamon

22-24 Hershey’s Pumpkin Spice Kisses

Plus:

1/2 cup sugar

1 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice

Let’s get baking:

In a medium bowl whisk together flour, baking soda, salt, pumpkin pie spice, and cinnamon.

Using an electric mixer on medium speed, beat butter and sugar until fluffy (about three minutes).

Add eggs, chai concentrate, and vanilla to the butter mixture. Mix until combined.

Reduce mixer speed to low and add flour mixture in three portions, mixing each just until incorporated.

Refrigerate for about an hour. .

Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F.

Unwrap Pumpkin Kisses.

Then in a small bowl mix 1/2 cup sugar and 1 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice.

Using your hands, roll the dough into one-inch round balls. Then, roll dough balls in sugar and pumpkin pie spice mixture.

Place the dough balls about two inches apart on baking sheets. Bake for 12-15 minutes.

Remove the cookies from the oven and immediately place pumpkin kisses in the center of each cookie. Cool completely.
Because the Pumpkin Kisses melt very quickly, I put the bag in the freezer before unwrapping them. I also kept the unwrapped Kisses chilled until I was ready to place them on the cookies. Do not touch or move your cookies until the Kisses have firmed up again.

Only two more cookie recipes to go! I was going to attempt to squeeze in one more, but I have a feeling I’m going to have a lot of extra cookies, so making another batch would just be silly.

I still can’t believe that tomorrow is Friday. The weeks just seem to be going faster and faster. It looks like it’s going to be another working weekend for me. What about you? Two blogger friends have asked me to participate in their fall inspired parties, so I have lots of crafting and decorating to do. I have some great ideas swirling around in my head; I just need to figure out how to make them happen. Let’s hope this is a successful and productive weekend!

For those of you just joining Fall Cookie Week, check out the bottom of this post where I’ve linked up all the cookies. Also, a reminder that I’m giving away a huge basket full of fall inspired products and tasty treats from my Gift Shoppe. You can enter that giveaway by clicking here. The wonderful folks at Goose Creek Candle Co. have also joined me in giving away two scented candles! You can enter that by clicking here.

Today’s cookie is probably one of my favorites of the week! When soft caramel meets apple cider, you just can’t go wrong! I found several recipes for this cookie online. From what I can tell, the original comes from The Cooking Photographer. Huge congrats and thanks to her and her brain for creating such fabulousness. I tweaked her recipe slightly, but I assume either recipe will result in pure deliciousness!

Here’s what you’ll need:

1 cup softened butter

3/4 cup granulated sugar

1/4 cup brown sugar

1/2 teaspoon salt

1  7.4 oz. box Alpine Spiced Apple Cider Instant Original Drink Mix

2 eggs

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 teaspoon baking powder

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

3 cups all-purpose flour

1 14 oz. bag Kraft Caramels

Let’s get baking:

In a medium bowl whisk together flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt, and cinnamon.

Using an electric mixer on medium speed, beat butter, sugar, brown sugar, and all ten packs of apple cider mix until fluffy. About three minutes.

Beat eggs, one at a time, and add with the vanilla to the butter mixture.

Reduce mixer speed to low and add flour mixture in three portions, mixing each just until incorporated.

To make forming your cookie a bit easier, refrigerate for about an hour. This step is not required, but recommended.

When you are ready to bake, unwrap your caramels.

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F. Line your cookie sheets with parchment paper (not waxed paper!).

Begin by rolling about 1 1/2 tablespoons of dough into a ball. I found that a little more dough is better than less as the caramel will seep out the sides during baking.

Then, flatten the ball of dough slightly in the palm of your hand.

Press the caramel into the center of your dough and seal the dough around it, covering it completely. Place two inches apart on parchment-covered cookie sheets.

Bake 12-14 minutes, or until very lightly browned around the edges. (As I learned, these are easy to overbake, and the caramel will burn on the bottom. As soon as you notice the cookies are starting to lightly brown, remove them from the oven.

Once the cookies are done, slide the parchment off the baking sheet right onto the counter. Allow cookies to partially cool on the parchment. When cookies are cool enough to be firm but still slightly warm, carefully twist them off the parchment and allow to finish cooling upside down.

Have a great weekend everyone!!

Part of transforming my gift shoppe each season involves a new design on my ever-changing chalkboard wall. I painted this wall a little over four years ago, and since then, chalkboarding (if that’s even a word) has become an art form.

The intricate and awe-inspiring creations people produce with chalk on walls simply blow my mind. With such masterpieces out there, I feel a bit nervous displaying my novice creations for the world to see. Even the pressure to come up with a unique idea is tough.

This past summer I did a dessert/ice cream inspired display. For the past several weeks I’ve been racking my brain about what to do for fall. Last night after I clawed into bed, not even thinking about my fall chalkboard, inspiration struck! I grabbed my notebook and began sketching.

My idea was a sign/display for a broom shop  – a witch’s broom shop! Perfect! Full of excitement, I was slightly tempted to get out of bed at midnight and go work on the wall. However, my pillow didn’t think that was such a good idea.

After washing away my previous design, I was greeted with a blank canvas.

Inspired By Charm

I grabbed my very small supply of chalk and went to work.

Inspired By Charm

A few short hours later the design was complete and Hocus Pocus Broom Co. was born!

Inspired By Charm

Inspired By Charm

Though it’s clearly nothing as fancy as a professional chalk artist’s work, I’m pretty pleased with the results!

Inspired By Charm

The names of the brooms are a little tricky to read, but we have the Haunted Hog, Frightful Flyer, Cauldron Lowrider, Swift Sweeper, and The Wicked Witch. Pretty clever, right?

Inspired By Charm

I did a little online research to figure out five different broom designs. Seeing them all together makes sense, but it was harder than I anticipated to come up with five styles.

Inspired By Charm

Anyway, I think it’s perfect for the season. It will stay up through October 31, at which time a holiday chalk display will take over. I guess I should start thinking about that one now. Is Christmas really less than four months away!? Yikes!

Inspired By Charm

All right, I’m off to clean up a bunch of chalk dust. Have a great weekend!

With such […]

Wow, do I have some pure eye candy to share with you today. For those of you that have been around for a while may remember when I was trying to make some wall decor decisions in my dining room. Should I add shelves? Should I add more pictures? This was two years ago. Click here if you need a refresher before continuing.

Anyway, I ultimately decided to add more pictures. You can read about that here. While that worked for me, I really regretted not having some shelf space in my dinning room. So, apparently after two years, I decided to change that.

After removing the pictures, filling in the holes, and touching up some paint, here is the before.

Inspired By Charm

I picked up some brackets and 2″x12″x8’s at Home Depot. I cut everything to length, sanded, and attached the brackets.

Inspired By Charm

Then everything got a coat of white paint. I use the latex based trim paint from Sherwin Williams in semi-gloss for all the trim in my house. I used the same for this project.

Inspired By Charm

After two coats I attached my new shelves to the walls with some screws and BAM!, new awesomeness for dining room.

I do apologize I don’t have a full tutorial for this, but I figured the process was pretty self explanatory.

Now, on to the fun part. Filling these babies with awesomeness! To show you my new shelves I created two fancy displays. The first is a coffee bar and the second is a lemonade stand. Let’s check them out!

Inspired By Charm

A natural color scheme with pops of green and yell pulls together this impromptu coffee station.

Inspired By Charm

A funnel in a stemless wine glass creates an easy and unique flower arrangement. A few snips of greenery and blossoms from the garden practically arrange themselves as stems are tucked into the narrow end of the funnel.

Inspired By Charm

Inspired By Charm

A vintage wood ironing board found shopping at a local antique shop acts as a unique riser and is the centerpiece of both displays.

Inspired By Charm

Coffee beans in glass jars, more funnels, old printing blocks and a sweet little owl create interest and a bit of fun.

Inspired By Charm

Next up, my little in-house lemonade stand is all about color.

Inspired By Charm

Taking inspiration from a set of colorful bowls, splashes of red, purple, orange, and yellow were added to make this display really pop.

Inspired By Charm

Two potted purple ranunculus plucked from the garden add a natural and cost effective touch.

Inspired By Charm

Red and white striped straws in a tall drinking glass serve a purpuse and add a sense of whimsy. I love these straws!

Inspired By Charm

And, of course, there is plenty of cold lemonade with a few spare lemons for garnishing glasses or to whip up another batch should more friends arrive.

Inspired By Charm

Inspired By Charm

Pretty darn cute, right?!

I know that was a lot of pictures, but lets take one more quick look. Before…

Inspired By Charm

…and after.

Inspired By Charm

I’m totally in love with my new shelves and I can’t wait to deck them out for the fall and christmas! That’s the best part about shelves.

I hope you like them as much as I do!

Yes, I know, the blogosphere is already completely saturated with talk and pictures of Fiddle Leaf Figs. Today I’m going to add to that saturation.

Recently, I’ve been spotting this beautiful tree, which I later found out to be the Fiddle Leaf Fig (Ficus Lyrata), in practically every design magazine that exists.

Inspired By Charm

Apartment Therapy

Of course, I just love it. So, after some research, I figured out it’s name and then did some searching online to see where I could buy one ASAP.

Inspired By Charm

Elle Decor

I had absolutely zero luck. And, obviously, there was no where around town that sold them. Bummer.

But wait, this story has a happy ending. I love happy endings.

Inspired By Charm

Emily Henderson

On a recent trip to my brother’s house, I spotted one at a local nursery with my Sister-in-law. While I was super excited, the tree didn’t look lush or very healthy. I assume it probably just needed repotted. At $120, I passed.

Inspired By Charm

The Marion House Book

When I returned home, I causally searched ebay, as I had done before, expecting to find nothing. Then, like a beam of light through the clouds, there is was a listing for a Fiddle Leaf Fig! I honestly felt like I won the lottery.

I checked the listing and there were two left. I bought them both.

Inspired By Charm

So, yeah, they are both pretty small around now. They are clippings that were rooted from a ‘mother tree.’ Each plant was $14.

Inspired By Charm

The plants came barefoot, so I bought some clearance ceramic pots and got them planted. According to the care instructions, my new trees (officially named Bonnie and Clyde – hence the title of this post) like to be outside this time of year.

Inspired By Charm

Once things get’s too cold outside they will move into the dining room. This is where I’d like to keep at least one of these. Preferably the taller one, Bonnie.

Inspired By Charm

And for pots I found on clearance at Wal-mart, they fit it kind of perfectly. Don’t you think?

Either way, I’m so exited to have found them. Even in spite of their small size, I love them to pieces. So wish me luck! Here’s hoping Bonnie and Clyde are around for years to come.

Inspired By Charm

What are your thoughts on the ‘Fiddle Leaf Fig Trend’? Love them? Hate them? Couldn’t care less?

Well, I’m at it again. I’m filling things with flowers that were not intended for flowers. Honestly, I just can’t help myself! I’m loving it! Ready for my latest creation?

Inspired By Charm

So I found this oversized chicken feeder (at least that’s what I’m told) and knew instanly it would make the perfect planter!

Inspired By Charm

I love the little wood handle, the rope, and al the rusty details. It was screaming to be brought back to life.

Inspired By Charm

Well, I did just that. Goodbye chicken feeder, hello gorgeous!

Inspired By Charm

Luckily, I was able to find the perfect size hanging basket that fit exactly inside of the top of this feeder. The rim of the plastic basket fits right around the top holding it in place perfectly. Sweet!

Inspired By Charm

To this pot of what I assume are some ivy type geraniums, I added some white bacopa and a licorice plant.

Inspired By Charm

Both of these additions will trail nicely down the pot while the geraniums will mostly grow up.

Inspired By Charm

Right now this bucket of awesomeness is on my little patio table on my side porch, but will probably get moved as it’s pretty large.

Inspired By Charm

Though, it does look kind of perfect there doesn’t it? Too many flowers, not a enough room for them all. What’s a guy to do?

Inspired By Charm

I also put together one of these feeder planters for my Dad’s wife. I think she likes it as much as I do. She asked, ‘how could you give that away!?’ I confessed that I bought two!

Inspired By Charm

Lately, when I have the opportunity, I’m learning to by two of everything. Nothing wrong with that right?

So what do you think of my newest planter?

I honestly can’t tell you how excited I am to have Shannon of Shannanigans guest posting on the blog today. If you remember a few weeks ago the amazing and obviously super talented Shannon and her hubby spent some time at my little inn.

When she sent me this post I literally got goosebumps. Yep, that’s how much I love it! It has entertaining, crafts, baking, loads of color, planting, bow ties and plaid shorts. I’m mean, come on! Does it get any better?

I’ll will shut up now and let Shannon take over.  It’s such an honor to have her posting here today! Thanks Shannon.  (This is one of my top two favorite Gabe outfits! Boy has style!) And you know if I’m hosting a party I’m calling on you and Bottle Pop Party Co. to do it! Truly fabulous work!

……………………………….

Hi there Inspired by Charm readers! I’m Shannon, I blog at Shannanigans and I am president of the Michael fan club. Just kidding. But I would be. Should I start one? You’d join, right? Anyway, I adore everything Michael does, so when he asked me to whip up a guest post for IBC, you know I was on that. I had visions of crafting up something spectacular using some great find from the thrift store…something that would really make Michael proud.

But here’s the problem…I’m the mom of a toddler. Toddlers and browsing don’t mix. And like a lot of you, I don’t have the time to DIY all the fun things on my Pinterest boards. Did I mention I run a business too? So yeah, kinda busy. But when it came time for Mother’s Day, I knew I wanted to do something special for my own mama. And make it pretty…obviously. This I found the time for.

Inspired By Charm

I decided to host a little brunch, just for the two of us and set it up in my back yard. Luckily Mother’s Day came and the sun was shining so, along with my little helper (yeah right), I got to setting the table. I was inspired by this adorable picnic invitation I found at Eat Drink Chic as well as the little gingham pocket. So cute, right? What’s even better is that they’re free printables, go get yourself some!

Inspired By Charm

The invite had such bright fun colors, that I pulled every one of them, from the retro oilcloth tablecloth I found at HomeGoods to the handpainted stripey flatware. My Goodwill has random forks, knives and spoons for 10 cents each. Each! A strip of fabric tied around the fork and knife makes em a cute set.

Inspired By Charm

Meanwhile, my little buddy was off picking flowers for his sweet grandma. I die over his Doodle Dooz Bowtie, don’t you? We subscribe to the Michael way of doing flower arrangements…we grab em from our own yard!

Inspired By Charm

Next up was picking out some plates. I know I said I don’t get to the thrift stores too often, but I did score these melamine “paper” plates, originally from Target, brand new for 5 bucks for the whole set. I did the Goodwill-find happy dance, I swear it. The sweet little vintage yellow dessert plates, from Venerable Pastiche, matched the invite and tablecloth freaking perfectly. I couldn’t have found a better match.

Inspired By Charm

And I was too excited to put my new (old) blue mason jars to good use. Mason jars are my go-to for every event. And as much as I love a paper stripey straw that you see everywhere, these plastic straws from Target are candy-colored and reusable! The “You Are So Loved” print was actually a freebie with a purchase from one of my favorite shops, The Wheatfield. Go browse and die over the prettiness.

Inspired By Charm

One of my favorite parts of setting a cute table are placecards. Anytime someone comes over for any meal, I’m putting out placecards. It’s such a great way to get creative and tie in your theme. I used these precccccious little picnic baskets from My Wedding Favors, Etc. with a little plant tucked inside for both a placecard and a little gift.

Inspired By Charm

I love it when it comes together!

Inspired By Charm

I also got a chance to re-use the brown paper flowers we made for my Always Crafty Workshop at my home back in April. I just cut out a few more leaves in coordinating colors and tucked them in the existing flowers.

Inspired By Charm

In case you need some giant paper flowers of your own, I’ll be doing a quick tutorial on my blog later this week!

Inspired By Charm

And of course, no brunch is complete without something purty to snack on, right? Especially when it’s a cake adorned with a cute little washi tape bunting from Inspiration Nest.

Inspired By Charm

Inspired By Charm

This is a quick little recipe that I really have no source for. It’s just in my head. Jell-o probably invented it, who knows. Let’s call it Orange Angel Cake, how bout that?

1) Prepare a box of angel food cake mix and pour half of it into an ungreased bundt pan. Feel free to make another cake with the other half. The cake rises so high that half of the mixture will fill the entire bundt pan.

2) After it’s done baking, let it cool in the pan then use a serrated knife to shimmy it out of the pan.

3) While it’s cooling, prepare a box of orange jello by mixing 3/4 C boiling water with the powder then stirring in 1/2 C cold water.

4) Poke holes in the cake every 1/2 inch about 3/4 of the way down with a skewer or fork. Pour the jello mixture into the cake, letting it soak in. Refrigerate for 3 hours to set.

5) Frost with your choice of whipped topping or glaze. I used a pre-made bottle of vanilla glaze and it worked perfectly.

Inspired By Charm

This little dude enjoyed it. And I’m pretty sure you will too.

Thanks so much for having me, Michael! BFF’s Forev!

Do you ever eat something and then become instantly obsessed with it. Like it’s basically the only thing you want to eat. Yeah, this is totally happening to me right now. And it’s because of these White Chocolate and Blueberry Waffles. I’m obsessed.

Inspired By Charm
It actually started with making these into pancakes, which are also just as fabulous (so, if you don’t have a waffle maker, don’t worry.) Now they are all I want to eat!

I obviously had to share the recipe with you all. Though it’s fairly simple, just add chopped up white chocolate chips and blueberries to your basic waffle batter. No rocket science here.

Inspired By Charm
I made these pretty early in the morning and for my guests, so I don’t have any fancy ‘in process’ photos this time. Please forgive me.

White Chocolate & Blueberry Waffles:

Here's what you will need:
1 cup flour
1/4 cup sugar
1 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/4 tsp salt
1 tbls melted butter
1 egg
1/2 tsp vanilla
3/4 cup butter milk
1/4 cup white chocolate chips, chopped (I recommend the Ghirardelli chips)
1/2 cup fresh blueberries

Begin by making your batter. Mix all your dry ingredients into a large bowl. Set aside. Then mix all your wet ingredients in a medium bowl. Add your wet ingredients to your dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.

Then carefully stir in the chopped white chocolate chips and blueberries.

Ladle into your griddle of choice and cook until golden brown.
That's it.

*To adjust this recipe for pancakes instead of using 3/4 cups buttermilk, use 1/2 cup buttermilk and 1/2 cup whole milk.

Print

Inspired By Charm
Then plate up your waffles with a little way too much butter and some more fresh blueberries.

Inspired By Charm

Then, proceed to pour on the maple syrup baby!

Inspired By Charm
Seriously, this is happiness on a plate. Pour me a big cup of coffee and I’m set!

Inspired By Charm
Obviously blueberry waffles have been around for a while, but I think the white chocolate really takes these to the next level.

Inspired By Charm
That creamy, warm white chocolate hidden inside there is just magic.

What foods are you loving obsessed with these days?

Strawberry Malt Ball Cake #dessert #cake #strawberry #maltball #recipe

As some of you saw yesterday from my Instagram pictures. I made a Strawberry Malt Ball Cake with White Chocolate Cream Cheese Frosting for my Mom for Mother’s Day.

Today I had a chance to sit down and go through all the pictures and put together a recipe for you. So, may I officially introduce you to my Strawberry Malt Ball Cake.

I honestly wish I could say I was the original creator of the Malt Ball Cake, but sadly, I am not. If you do a google search you will see that several creative folks out there have made a chocolate version of this recipe. Though, I think I can safely say I’m the first to do it with strawberry malt balls. That counts for something right?

…………………………………………….

So here’s how to put this delicious confection together. Let’s start with the cake, here’s what you’ll need:

1 box Duncan Hines Strawberry Cake Mix
3 Eggs
1 1/3 cup water
1/3 cup vegetable oil

pink.jpg

Simply follow the directions on the back of the cake mix box to bake your cakes. I made two 9-in round cakes. I line my pan with parchment paper to prevent my cake from sticking to the pan.

While your cakes bake and cool. Let’s make the White Chocolate Cream Cheese Frosting.  We are going to start by making my Go-To Cream Cheese Frosting Recipe.

My Go-To Cream Cheese Frosting Recipe: (I doubled the recipe below for this cake)

1 cup (2 sticks) room temperature butter unsalted)4 oz cream cheese (use phildelphia, generic cream cheese is a no-no)1/4 teaspoon salt (if using unsalted butter)4 cups powdered sugar1 teaspoon vanilla extract2-3 tablespoons heavy cream

With an electric mixer, fitted with the whisk attachment; beat butter, salt and cream cheese (on medium speed) until completely smooth

One cup at time, add 2 cups of powdered sugar, beating after each addition. Add vanilla and about 1 tablespoon of cream, and continue beating. Add the remaining 2 cups powdered sugar, one at a time.Add an additional 1-2 tablespoons cream until desired consistency is reached.

icing.jpg

Now for the white chocolate. Melt an entire bag of white chocolate chips over a double broiler. I don’t have a double broiler so I just used a glass bowl over a pan of boiling water.

Once your chips are completely melted, remove your glass bowl from the pan and allow this to completely cool … but not so cold that the chocolate hardens up again.

Add your cooled melted white chocolate to your frosting. Mix until combined.

I wanted my frosting pink to match my malt balls so I added red food coloring until I achieved a shade of pink I liked.

Time to frost the cakes! I lined my cake plate with several pieces of wax paper which I will remove later. This keeps my cake plate free and clean of excess frosting. Props to my gal Ina Garten for that tip!

After a layer of frosting, I sliced some strawberries and added a layer of those to my cake.

With the strawberries secure, I added my second layer of cake, then continued to frost the rest of the cake.

I’m not an expert at adding frosting to a cake. This is why I need that layer of wax paper. I usually just gob it on with my spatula and then use a frosting knife/spatula to remove any excess. Thankfully this cake will be covered in malt balls so a perfectly frosted cake is not required.

Time for the malt balls, also know as Whoppers Strawberry Milkshake. I ended up using almost three 10oz boxes. Not ten boxes as I planned for. Oops!

So this process may seem challenging, but it’s honestly really easy. Just start by adding malt balls to the bottom of the cake. Work all the way around until you finish the first row.

Continue working up the cake until you reach the top. I offset my second row so that each malt ball tucked in-between two from the first row.

Once you are at the top, just continue to add your malt balls until you reach the center.

Ta da! Thanks it! A completely covered cake. Honestly, once you do it you’ll see how easy it is.

Pretty beautiful, right? And it smells delicious! Those strawberry malt balls smell like cotton candy! Yum.

As beautiful as the cake is by itself I wanted to make it a little bit more festive. So I grabbed some scraps of vintage sheets, bakers twine, scissors, wood skewers, and tacky glue and made this cute little bunting!

The photos are pretty self explanatory, but here how it came together. First, fold a scrap piece of fabric in half. Then cut out a triangle. You want the fold in fabric to be the bottom of your triangle. When you open your cut triangle it should look like a diamond. This will keep your bunting looking pretty from both sides.

With all your triangles cut, measure a piece of baker’s twine and cut it to fit. Open your triangles and apply some tacky glue. Insert your bakers twine and close your triangles. Continue adding your triangles until you have the desired length.

Tie each end of the bunting onto a large wooden skewer.

And that’s it! Bunting complete. Stick that beauty into your cake.

And she’s done!
A Strawberry Malt Ball Cake with White Chocolate Cream Cheese Frosting and Vintage Sheet Bunting

Seriously, could a cake get any cuter?

I’m pretty sure it can’t! And while it does take a little time for the cake to come together the process couldn’t be any easier.

A truly professional cake, made at home. Trust me, if I can do this, so can you!

Okay, I’m ready for a piece and I want to see how this thing looks on the inside.

An entirely pink cake! What’s not to love! And yes, that fabric underneath the cake is a vintage bed sheet I picked up at Goodwill a couple weeks ago for a dollar.

Time to dig in. Cake, frosting, fresh strawberries and a malt ball for good measure!

Delicious!

I don’t know about you, but one of the things I hate spending a lot of money on is fresh cut flowers. While they are beautiful and artful, they just seem to fade so quickly. Don’t get me wrong, I love fresh flowers and they really add the perfect finishing detail to any space, but I can’t afford a $50 arrangement every week.

So with Mother’s day just around the corner I thought I would create and share some ‘Bouquets on a Budget’.

Inspired By Charm

Using things I had on hand and some greenery found in my landscaping, I created two flower-shop-worthy arrangements for only $5 a piece!

Inspired By Charm

And I’m going to share my secrets with you today!

First, I stopped at Wal-Mart and picked up two bunches of tulips for $5 a piece.

Inspired By Charm

Then I dug through my cupboards and found a couple vases. Don’t have a vase? No problem. Use a water pitcher, an empty mason jar, a drinking glass, or whatever else you may have on hand.

Inspired By Charm

To compliment my tulips, I needed some greenery… and maybe an extra flower. I scouted out my landscaping to see what was green and blooming.

Inspired By Charm

I’m obviously not a plant expert, but here’s what I found (starting from the top left) – arborvitae, some purple leaved bush, daylily, a purple flower bachelors button, sedum, and clematis greens. I told you, I have no idea what some of these things are called. (I also used hosta leaves but failed to take a picture.)

With scissors in hand, I went out and snipped a few pieces of each.

Inspired By Charm

With lots of greens cut and tulips ready, it was time to start arranging.

Inspired By Charm

I begin by determining how tall I wanted my tulips to be in my vase. I gave them a quick cut to the length and got work cleaning them up.

Inspired By Charm

I cleaned off all the leaves that would below the rim of the vase. The leaves peel off very easily with just your hand. No knife or scissors required.

Inspired By Charm

I then did the same thing with the sedum, clearing off all the leaves that would have been below the rim of the vase. See how much better they look!

Inspired By Charm

After that, I tucked the tulips in my vase and then filled in with the sedum.

I repeated the same steps with my arborvitae. I really love the texture and color these give to the arrangement.

Inspired By Charm

After that I cleaned up my clematis leaves and tucked them into the arrangement. Almost done.

Honestly, this isn’t a very fussy process, just do what feels and looks right to you. Have fun. Be fearless.

Inspired By Charm

I felt the arrangement needed a bit more whimsy, so I grabbed some of my daylily leaves and tucked them in on either side of the arrangement.

To make this arrangement look truly professional, I grabbed a piece of green gingham ribbon I had on hand and tied it around the vase creating a bow in the front.

Inspired By Charm

To finish off the tails of the bow, I cut in a dovetail. This can be done by folding the ribbon in half and cutting at a diagonal. I do this to all my ribbon. It really gives it a finished look.

And that’s it!

Inspired By Charm

One professional looking arrangement, completed within minutes, using a $5 bunch of tulips and some greenery already growing in my yard.

Inspired By Charm

It doesn’t get much easier than that! Still don’t believe me? Let try another.

First, measure and clean up your tulips.

Inspired By Charm

I wanted this arrangement to be a bit more colorful, so I’m adding in some burgundy foliage…

Inspired By Charm

…and some of these purple flowers. See how much better they look after removing all of those leaves? Love that!

Inspired By Charm

I finished this arrangement by tucking in some hosta and daylily leaves.

Inspired By Charm

A quick and easy bow (if you can tie your shoes, you can make this bow) for that professional look.

Inspired By Charm

And we’re done!

Inspired By Charm

Honestly, it’s really that easy! So easy that you may never pay $50 for another flower arrangement again.

Inspired By Charm

And this look is so much more casual and less fussy then some of the arrangements you get from the florist. Don’t you think?

Inspired By Charm

Want to see them set up in my house? You got it!

Inspired By Charm

Inspired By Charm

Pretty amazing for only five bucks! A welcome and colorful addition to my little sideboard. That odd looking wood piece is a vintage ironing board for shirt sleeves. Remember I picked it up antiquing a couple weeks ago?

It’s amazing the difference fresh flowers can make in a space. And now, they are even affordable!

How about one more picture of me an my pink shorts? Which, by the way, I picked up at Target and totally love!

Have a wonderful weekend everyone. Happy, happy Mother’s day!Inspired By Charm

I don’t know about you, but one of the things I hate spending a lot of money on is fresh cut flowers. While they are beautiful and artful, they just seem to fade so quickly. Don’t get me wrong, I love fresh flowers and they really add the perfect finishing detail to any space, but […]

Yep, I’m still planting flowers. I’m sure there will be another frost, but I just can’t help myself. Especially on days like today when temperates were approaching 80 degrees! Thankfully everything I’m planting can be taken inside when that final frost arrives.

Remember my food mill turned planter that I whipped together last year? Well, I whipped them up again this year and thought I’d share the process.

Inspired By Charm

They come together super easy and the process is pretty self explanatory. Let’s get going!

First, gather all your goodies. I’m using three types flowers. Bacopa (the white one) and two varieties of Million Bells. I like these because they both trail  beautifully. I found both of my food mills on ebay and picked up the liners at Wal-Mart.

Inspired By Charm

Last year I used moss to help hold in the water. It didn’t work well. I noticed the food mill dried out really quickly. So this year I picked up a couple hanging basket liners in hopes that would help hold in more water.

Inspired By Charm

The liners were a little big, so I cut them to fit and placed them in the mill.

Inspired By Charm

Then I just filled it with plants.

Inspired By Charm

And made a mess.

Inspired By Charm

Then I watered. (I told you this was pretty self explanatory.)

Inspired By Charm

That’s it! Done.

Inspired By Charm

I planted two food mills, the first goes on my front porch…

Inspired By Charm

Inspired By Charm

…and the second goes on my side porch.

Inspired By Charm

Unique, easy, a little vintage, and a whole lot of fun!

Inspired By Charm

What fun, unique things do you plant your flowers in?

After a bitter cold week here in North Central Pennsylvania things finally started to warm up yesterday. I think it’s almost time to start picking up some plants! In fact, my Mom and I have a little trip planned to visit this amazing greenhouse tomorrow. So excited!

Yesterday I made a little more progress on my Outdoor Shelves. I hinted that this was going to be happening in my last post and a few of you easily picked up on my plans.

I now am officially the owner and creator of my first vertical garden! Ta da!

Inspired By Charm

Now, I know what you are thinking, “Michael, you’re going to need a few more hens and chicks because that just looks like framed dirt.’

I do realized I need a lot more hens and chicks, but I picked up this little bunch at my brother’s house yesterday and just couldn’t wait to get started. I have a few leads on some more, so this sucker will be full in no time, plus I want to leave a little room for things to grow.

Here is how this whole thing came together. (I made the framework last week, if you missed that you can see how I did that here.)

The first step to making my framed hens and chicks was to cut a back for my frame.  I traced my frame onto an old piece of paneling I had on hand, then cut it out using a circular saw. After that I sanded down any rough edges.

Inspired By Charm

I picked up some hardware cloth (wire screen) at the local hardware store. Using my newly cut back as guide I cut out the cloth it leaving a little extra on each side as I will be stapling this to my frame.

I trimmed off the excess on each corner to to give me a nice clean edge when inserting it into the frame.

Inspired By Charm

I folded the hardware cloth to neatly fit into my frame and then slide it into place. Using a staple gun, I secured it to the frame.

Inspired By Charm

Once all the staples were in and the screen was secure, I was ready for dirt.

Inspired By Charm

I did purchase one new bag of soil designed for succulents and cactus as the first layer.

Inspired By Charm

I filled in the rest with soil I had from an old flower pot. I packed the soil in as much as I could to make sure it would stay in place.

Inspired By Charm

Once the frame was well packed with dirt and any excess was removed from the frame. I applied the back with wood screws.

Inspired By Charm

When I flipped the frame over I  honestly expected lots of dirt to fall out, but was pleasantly surprised to see that mostly all of it stayed inside the frame.

Inspired By Charm

Next up, planting! I was going to go with a mix of succulents for this frame, but ultimately decided to stick with just hens and chicks as they can stay outside all winter.

I dug these guys out of my brother’s driveway. Some of them already have little baby chicks growing out of them! Too cute.

Inspired By Charm

To plant, I used a wooden skewer. I first inserted it through the grid and then wiggled it around to form a hole. Then, I placed the roots of the plant in the hole. If the roots were large I used the skewer to force them down.

Inspired By Charm

Once the plant was in place, I inserted the skewer into the holes around it to fill the dirt back in.

The process was a little tedious, but I love planting, so I enjoyed every minute of it!

Inspired By Charm

After that, I was done (for now), and back to the wall the shelf framed hens and chicks went.

Inspired By Charm

Its been hanging for about 24 hours now and everything is still in place. Success!

Inspired By Charm

I also temporarily added a couple other succulents to the little pots on the shelves (I bought these before I made the decision to stick with just hens and chicks). They most likely won’t stay there, but I’m desperate for a little more green!

Inspired By Charm

Over the next week or two I finish up the styling of these little shelves and share the completed look with you then.

Inspired By Charm

I’m also hoping to dig up a few more hens and chicks too, unless these guys plan on multiplying over night.

Inspired By Charm

So, what do you think of my new vertical garden?

Well, it’s about time. I’m finally making some progress getting my porches dressed for summer! My first little project is on my back porch.

This is the entrance that is most used. Guests that are staying at my little inn have a key to this door which leads into the kitchen.

Inspired By Charm

(yes, I’m recycling pictures from yesterday. I forgot to take a before shot. Oops!)

It’s not a huge space, so things sitting on the floor of the porch usually get in the way. With that in mind, I decided to take advantage of that big blank brick wall with the oddly placed glass block window.

Let me introduce you to my new outdoor shelves!

Inspired By Charm

Pretty cute, right? I filled them with some random things just to take some pictures. (That’s why this is only Step One). Decorating these guys will come on another day, in another post. I need to get my hands on some plants as soon as the threat of frost is over.

Let’s take a look at how these shelves came together! And don’t worry, they are a piece of cake!

First up, I did some measuring to determine what size boxes I wanted. I then cut up some leftover 2x4s to create three boxes.

Using some wood screws, I screwed the wood together at the corners.

Inspired By Charm

Yep, it was seriously that simple. No fancy minter cuts here. I wanted it to look rustic and simple.

Once everything was together, I gave them a quick sanding.

Inspired By Charm

Next I wanted to add some interest to these boring boxes. I picked up some stencils, black paint, and brushes at Wal-Mart and got stenciling.

I just choose some random (and not so random) words, numbers, and symbols. Some of the words will make more sense in Part Two of this little makeover.

Inspired By Charm

Next step, stain! Again using a lighter and darker stain that I had on hand, I stained all three boxes.

Inspired By Charm

After the stain was on, I felt like the shelves needed a little more interest. I grabbed some red paint and added that to various spots around the shelf. I used the same brush as my stain, so the paint went on very thin.

Inspired By Charm

Inspired By Charm

Once everything was dry, I gave the shelves a light sanding and then sprayed them with a clear spray sealer.

Inspired By Charm

After that, the shelves were complete and ready to be hung. I drilled two holes into the back of each self.
Using a masonry bit, I drilled holes into the brick and inserted screws. The holes drilled into the shelves were placed over the screws and the shelves were hung and done!

Inspired By Charm

Super cute, right? I just love they they turned out. A warm little welcome to everyone entering my home and little inn.

Inspired By Charm

Inspired By Charm

And while I’m not sure if this is where this adorable little sign will stay, but I’m loving it here for now. It was a special gift from the lovely Kathy of South of Main Street. Thank you so much Kathy, I just love it!

Inspired By Charm

I also love how that oddly placed window doesn’t look so odd anymore. It now looks like it was supposed to be there. Success!

The stencils details also add a unique touch. When my Mom stopped by my house today she asked ‘where’d you get that wood!?’, having no idea it was just 2x4s in disguise.

Inspired By Charm

Inspired By Charm

Any guesses what I havve planned for that tall skinny shelf?

Inspired By Charm

The stenciling on the side may give it away, but if you need another hint, check out my ‘Ideas for the Garden‘ post.

Inspired By Charm

Now I am even more anxious for summer to get here! Those little pots are just screaming for some dirt and flowers.

Inspired By Charm

So what do you think of my little porch project? Do you like my outdoor shelves?

Yep, that’s how I roll …yesterday I’m talking about diets, today I’m baking over the top deliciousness!

A couple weeks ago I found a recipe for cinnamon rolls that used a cinnamon butter spread. It was dated a while back and when I looked for said cinnamon spread at the grocery store it wasn’t there. So I improvised, made my own spread, and the rolls were fantastic. Based on that little experiment I thought I would take it a little further and use nutella instead of cinnamon, butter, and sugar.

And thus was born Nutella Rolls with Cream Cheese Icing!

Inspired By Charm

And let me tell you, these suckers are delicious!
Inspired By Charm
Ready to get started?

Here’s what you’ll need to make 8 Nutella Rolls

Rolls:
1 can Pillsbury Grands Biscuits
3/4 – 1 cup Nutella
Flour and Sugar for rolling

Cream Cheese Icing:
4oz Cream Cheese (softened)
1 tsp Vanilla
1 1/2 cups Powdered Sugar

That’s it! Let’s go!

Begin by preheating your oven to 350 degrees and spraying eight sections of a muffin pan with cooking or baking spray.

Lightly flour and sugar your surface. (I add a little sugar to sweeten up the dough)

Inspired By Charm
Using a rolling pin, roll out each biscuit until it’s about double in size.

Inspired By Charm
Grab your nutella and spread about 1-2 tablespoons on each piece of dough.

Inspired By Charm

Inspired By Charm
Then, roll up your dough.

Inspired By Charm
Once each piece is rolled, cut into three sections.

Inspired By Charm
Then, place the three pieces, cut side up, into one section of the muffin tin.

Inspired By Charm
Repeat for all eight rolls.

Inspired By Charm
Bake for about 15 minutes.

Inspired By Charm
Allow the rolls to cool for about five minutes, then remove from the pan.

Inspired By Charm
While the rolls cool, it time to whip up the cream cheese icing! Add the cream cheese, vanilla and powder sugar to a bowl. Whip with a whisk until smooth.

Inspired By Charm
While your rolls are still a little warm on the inside, slather on some icing!

Inspired By Charm
And that’s it! Serve and enjoy!

I guess it’s all about lemon here at IBC this week! (Speaking of, did you get a chance to try my super simple recipe for Lemontinis?)

Anywho, If these waffles aren’t worth getting out of bed for, then I don’t know what is! Here’s my latest creation.

Inspired By Charm

I came up with this mountain of awesomeness as a result of wanting to create a unique spring-inspired breakfast using items I had on hand.

I started with my go-to waffle recipe as a base, and jazzed it up with the addition of lemon and coconut.
Here’s what you’ll need to get these cooking…

Waffles:
3 cup flour
3/4 cup sugar
3 tsp baking powder
1 1/2 tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt

3/4 cup sweetened, shredded coconut
3 tbls melted butter
3 eggs
1/2 tsp vanilla
2 1/2 cup buttermilk

1 lemon zested and juiced

Lemon Cream Cheese Icing:
8oz cream cheese (softened)
1 cup powdered sugar
1/2 lemon juice (you may need more lemon juice based on the desired thickness of your icing)

Toasted Coconut for Garnish:
1 cups sweetened, shredded coconut

Got it? Good! Let’s get cooking!

Begin your waffles by mixing all the dry ingredients into a large bowl. Then, mix all your wet ingredients in a medium bowl. Add your wet ingredients to your dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.

Next, cook your waffles. I have a square iron that makes four, 4in square waffles. I use a heaping cup of batter. I like the look of the imperfect edges. I used the hottest setting and cook until golden brown.

Inspired By Charm

To make the lemon cream cheese icing, whisk together the cream cheese, powdered sugar and lemon juice. Add more powdered sugar and less lemon juice for a thicker icing.

Inspired By Charm

Toasted coconut is the finishing touch for these waffles.

Spread your coconut on a baking sheet and bake in the over at 300 degrees for about 20 minutes. Stir coconut every five minutes to brown evenly.

Inspired By Charm

Assembly your waffles and your done!

Inspired By Charm

Honestly, I know these are waffles, but it’s seriously like eating cake for breakfast. And I simply adore cake for breakfast. Doesn’t everyone?

Inspired By Charm

Though Operation 20lbs prevented me from putting my entire face into this plate, I did steal a bite or two… or three.

Enjoy!

…pronounced foe-nay (as in Claude Monet); not fox-net (as in the fox is caught in a net).

A couple months ago I found this vintage art at a local resale shop. I paid $5. At the time I bought the piece, I really didn’t have a plan of how I wanted to use it.

Inspired By Charm

As I mentioned last week, I have plans to redo one of my guest rooms. With pennies pinched, I needed to create some inexpensive wall art. Last night I was in the mood to paint so I grabbed my thrift store find from the basement and got to work!

As you can see, the painting was a bit drab. My goal was to brighten the whole thing up. I envisioned a yellow gold frame with a fresh new take on the current artwork using the colors (turquoise, light blue, white and green) I plan on using in my new space.

First, I removed the art from the frame to make painting everything a bit easier. I began by peeling off the paper baking. I then bent up the staples holding in the art. I kept the staples in the frame so I could use them to secure the painting to the frame when I was finished.

Inspired By Charm

Once the art was out of the frame I used two colors of bright yellow craft paint to cover the frame.

Inspired By Charm

After that was finished I used a gold metallic paint on top of the yellow.

Inspired By Charm

I did this step after the sun when down, so I don’t have any pictures. Sorry about that. After I applied the gold I went over everything with a white wash … then a little more yellow, a little more gold, a little more white, etc. I just continued to add layers until I was pleased with the look.

After the frame was finished I moved onto the artwork. I used the original painting as a guide and added brighter colors to the whole piece.

Inspired By Charm

It took many attempts to figure out what was going to look best. Honestly, at one point I almost gave up and threw the whole thing in the trash. I ultimately ending up liking the look of adding dots of color. The finished look reminds me of paintings done by Claude Monet.

This was the painting shortly after I started adding color.

Inspired By Charm

You can see the turquoise and blue in the sky/water and the green I added to the trees. For paint, I just used the cheap acrylic craft paint you can buy at Wal-mart or your local craft store.

After about three hours of working on the piece (and unfortunately not taking any more pictures, as I was both focused and frustrated) here’s what I came up with.

Inspired By Charm

Pretty fabulous, right!?

Inspired By Charm

I’m loving the new look! It went from drab and dusty to fab and fun!

Inspired By Charm

It’s cheerful and bold and I just love it! I think the colors will be a perfect addition to my room redo.

The desk below the art (found at a local antique shop) and the glass vase (found at TJ Maxx for $20) will also be additions to the space.

Inspired By Charm

I’m also really pleased with the yellow gold frame. It couldn’t have came out more perfect! The bright yellow base added a much need pop of color underneath the whitewashed gold.

Inspired By Charm

I also decided to paint the little house purple, inspired by this post I read earlier in the day.

Inspired By Charm

You’ll also noticed the horse and cart were completely eliminated from the pond. Much better.

Inspired By Charm

Until I actually start my room redo, my new piece of artwork will sit on my vintage corbel shelf in my hall.

Inspired By Charm

A lovely reminder that spring and summer are quickly approaching!

Today is my Mom’s Birthday. Happy Birthday, Mom!

Last night my brother and his wife cooked dinner for her and i brought the cake. That was find with me, I’ll take baking over dinner cooking any day.

I wanted to try something different so i thought I would do a cake inspired by neapolitan ice cream. While baking and decorating I kept my camera close at hand so I could share my little adventure with you.

Inspired By Charm

Let’s get baking!

I used boxed cake mixed. Duncan Hines. First up, french vanilla.

white.jpg

Then strawberry.

pink.jpg

Then chocolate.

brown.jpg

I prepared and baked according the directions the box. I lined my baking pans with parchment paper for extremely easy cake removal.

This gave me six cakes. I was originally planning on using all six, but later realized that was going to be way too tall. I decided to just use one of each and froze the other three to use another time.

IMG_2425.JPG

As the cakes cooled, I made the icing.

icing.jpg

My go-to icing recipe: (this recipe was doubled for this cake)

1 cup (2 sticks) room temperature butter unsalted)
4 oz cream cheese (use phildelphia, generic cream cheese is a no-no)1/4 teaspoon salt (if using unsalted butter)
4 cups powdered sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2-3 tablespoons heavy cream

With an electric mixer, fitted with the whisk attachment; beat butter, salt and cream cheese (on medium speed) until completely smooth
One cup at time, add 2 cups of powdered sugar, beating after each addition.
Add vanilla and about 1 tablespoon of cream, and continue beating.

Add the remaining 2 cups powdered sugar, one at a time.
Add an additional 1-2 tablespoons cream until desired consistency is reached.

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Icing done, cakes still cooling, time to whip up some quick decorations for my cake.

flags.jpg

To make the pennants I just cut a diamond shape out of some pretty scraps of fabric. I applied some tacky glue to one side of the diamond, placed a wooden skewer in the middle and folded the other side over. Yep, it’s seriously that easy.

I tied on some scraps of ribbon and rick rack to make it a little more interesting and fun!

For more fun decorations, I found these malted eggs and edible, yep EDIBLE, grass at Joann’s.

decor.jpg

The edible grass is oddly good. It takes like those little flying saucers wafers with a hit of green apple flavor. It’s also available in green and pink.

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

After my cakes were cool, it was time to put the cake together.

IMG_2431.JPG

I lined my cake plate with some wax paper stripes to prevent it from being complete covered in icing by the time I was finish. Thanks Ina Garten.

spread.jpg

I also cut off the tops of my cake so the layers stacked a little bit nicer.

I am not a cake decorator and don’t want to be. I actually love imperfections in cakes.

IMG_2526.JPG

So all you fancy cake deocrators out there can just look the other way.

IMG_2541.JPG

Once it was iced it was time for some edible grass and eggs.

IMG_2542.JPG

And don’t forget the flags!

IMG_2550.JPG

Tada! My spring themed neapolitan birthday cake!

IMG_2568.JPG

IMG_2592.JPG

IMG_2617.JPG

IMG_2590.JPG

Pretty stinkin’ cute, right!? Time for a slice.

And let me tell you, for boxed cake, it was incredibly moist, light and delicious! Neapolitan cake may just be my new favorite.

I hope you enjoyed my little baking adventure!

Have a great Monday everyone!  I’m sure my mom will be reading the comments if you want to send her some birthday love.

This Strawberry Pretzel Salad is an old-fashioned dessert recipe that still popular for a reason: it’s delicious!

This Strawberry Pretzel Salad is a classic dessert that continues to be a favorite! #strawberry #jello #pretzel #dessert #recipe

Strawberry Jell-O Salad?

For me the Super Bowl is all about the food. Honestly, I didn’t even know what teams were playing until kickoff. I went over to my brother’s house to watch the game commercials (which were disappointing) and the halftime show (which was amazing). My brother asked me to bring my Strawberry Jell-O Pretzel Salad.

I had some extra time, so I figured I’d take photos while I put everything together. If you haven’t ever made this dessert, it’s super simple and a crowd pleaser!

If you have made this Strawberry Pretzel Dessert dessert and it turned out to be a runny, mushy mess, don’t worry. I have some great tips to prevent this. Are you ready? Let’s go!

IMG_2024.JPG

How Do You Make Strawberry Jell-O Salad?

Begin by preheating your oven to 350 degrees F. Then crush the pretzels!

jps1.jpg

You can use any kind of pretzels, but make sure they have some salt on them. The salty-sweet combination is part of what makes this dessert so amazing. I put the pretzels in a plastic baggie and crushed them with a rolling pin.

IMG_1753.JPG

Combine the crushed pretzels, brown sugar, and melted butter and press into a lightly greased 9 x 13″ pan.

jps2.jpg

Bake for 10 minutes.

jps7.jpg

Remove from the oven. Once the pretzel crust is slightly cool, refrigerate it 30-60 minutes so that it gets really cold.

jps3.jpg

In the meantime, beat the cream cheese, sugar, and vanilla until smooth. Use a mixer for this. You don’t want lumps of cream cheese.

jps4.jpg

Blend in Cool Whip with a spatula.

IMG_1884.JPG

Spread over cooled crust.

IMG_1889.JPG

How to Avoid Runny Strawberry Pretzel Salad:

Make sure you spread this layer completely to the edges. You want to create a seal so your Jell-O doesn’t leak through. Again, this is key to keeping your layers separate. Once this is completed, put your pan back in the fridge to chill.

jps6.jpg

Next, make the Jell-O (you want the larger box of Jell-O) according to the package directions minus 1/4 cup of water. This is a personal preference, but I find using less water allows the Jell-O to firm up better.

IMG_1899.JPG

Put your bowl of Jell-O in the fridge to allow it to partially cool before putting it on top of your cream cheese layer.

IMG_1837.JPG

While the Jell-O partially cools, slice the strawberries. Then, place them on top of the chilled layer of cream cheese and Cool Whip.

IMG_1934.JPG

You can be as fancy as you wanted with this step.

jps5.jpg

I like to place the strawberries in alternating rows across the top. Feel free to scatter them randomly or in any fun pattern you choose.

Once your Jell-O is chilled and about the consistency of jam or pudding (about an hour or two in the fridge), you’re ready!

IMG_1967.JPG

This Strawberry Pretzel Salad is an old-fashioned dessert recipe that still popular for a reason: it's delicious!

Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 cup pretzels - crushed finely
  • 3 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 cup butter
  • 1 package (6 ounces) strawberry Jell-O gelatin dessert
  • 1 container (16 ounces) fresh strawberries, sliced
  • 1 container (8 ounces) cream cheese
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 container (8 ounces) Cool Whip

Instructions

  • Begin by preheating your oven to 350 degrees F. In a large bowl, combine the crushed pretzels, brown sugar, and melted butter and press into a lightly greased 9 x 13" pan.
  • Bake for 10 minutes.
  • Remove from the oven and allow to cool completely. Once the pretzel crust is slightly cool, refrigerate it 30-60 minutes so that it gets really cold.
  • In the meantime, with an electric mixer, beat the cream cheese, sugar, and vanilla until smooth. Then using a spatula, fold in the Cool Whip.
  • Spread over cooled crust. (Make sure you spread this layer completely to the edges. You want to create a seal so your Jell-O doesn’t leak through.) Return your pan to the fridge to chill.
  • Next, prepare the Jell-O according to the package directions minus 1/4 cup of water. This is a personal preference, but I find using less water allows the Jell-O to firm up better. Put your bowl of Jell-O in the fridge to allow it to chill. However, do not let it become completely firm
  • While the Jell-O cools, slice the strawberries. Then, place them on top of your chilled layer of cream cheese and cool whip.
  • Once the Jell-O is chilled to about the consistency of jam or pudding (about an hour or two in the fridge), it’s ready. Spoon or pour the Jell-O over the cream cheese layer.
  • Return the pan to the fridge. Cool until your Jell-O is completely set (about an hour).
  • Slice, serve, and enjoy!

Notes

Please note: For best results, you must chill the layers between steps. This is an easy dessert to make but it does take time due to chilling. Allow enough time to complete the entire recipe.
