As I mentioned on Monday, I got a new coffee table for my living room. This makes me happy on so many levels: I wasn’t loving the coffee table I had, I needed something bigger, and I wanted something I could style. So today I thought I’d show you my coffee table close up and share a few tips for styling any coffee table.

Coffee Table Styling | Inspired by Charm

Before you begin to style, you’ll need a few decorating accessories. My latest favorite place to shop is Hunters Alley. (You remember my bowl and brass pineapple bookends, right?) It’s a fab online marketplace where you can find amazing one-of-a-kind vintage, preowned, handcrafted, and artisanal items for your home. While both individuals and professional vendors can sell on Hunters Alley, listings are edited so the merchandise is only the best of the best. You can “like” products, comment on listings, see what other people are buying, and follow sellers who inspire you! Pretty awesome, right?

Coffee Table Styling | Inspired by Charm

At the risk of becoming a hoarder, it’s always nice to have pieces on hand in different shapes, sizes, and textures that are special and meaningful to you. It makes the styling process so much easier and a lot more fun. I actually just got this plate from Hunters Alley to hold remotes on the coffee table. It could double as a really cool serving tray. I’m also obsessed with the color.

Coffee Table Styling | Inspired by Charm

With that said, on to the styling! I’m a huge fan of Justina Blakeney and her blog. Her basic principles for styling a space (bookcase, side table, coffee table, etc.) have become my no-fail guide for styling basically anything. So I’m going to use her principles (which I’ve adapted slightly) to take you through my coffee table styling.

Function – what you need this space to do.

Color – stick within your color palette.

Shapes – use a variety of shapes to create balance and add diversity.

Texture / Pattern – use different ones to create visual interest.

Spacing – the different between collected and cluttered, leave some empty space.

Foliage – flowers and plants complete a space.

Sparkle – add something that sparkles – glass, metallic, mirrors, crystals, etc.

Coffee Table Styling | Inspired by Charm

Okay, let me show you how this system works. First, I need this table to function as a spot to rest my feet, place a drink, and add a little style. Although there are a lot of things on my coffee table, there is still room to perform all of these functions, plus the books and tray can be stacked to create even more usable space. In terms of color, I worked with the colors in the space, but not all of them. I limited this arrangement to include green, brass and teal. I mostly stayed within those three colors, but did add in something outside of that pallet with my coasters.

Coffee Table Styling | Inspired by Charm

Since the coffee table is rectangular I wanted to incorporate a few contrasting shapes. I added in a large round platter and a faceted terrarium. The shapes of the books and magazines mimic the coffee table. I wanted the pattern and texture of the coffee table itself to be the star of the show so I stuck with mostly solid accessories. However, the coasters and magazine covers do add texture and pattern.

Coffee Table Styling | Inspired by Charm

I also paid attention to the spacing of items. I kept the right-hand side of the table a bit more dense and left-hand side a little more open. In terms of verticals, the tulips, which double as my foliage, add height to my table. The plants in my terrarium are another botanical element. And last but not least, sparkle. Again my terrarium and brass elements bring a bit of bling to my table.

Coffee Table Styling | Inspired by Charm

And that’s it!

Coffee Table Styling | Inspired by Charm

As you may have guessed, these basic principles of styling can be applied to projects of all sizes, from something as big as room to something as small as a bedside table.

I hope you enjoyed these tips and are liking my new coffee table as much as I am.

Hey there, friends! I hope you all had a fabulous weekend. I was busy making some changes around the house this weekend, so I thought I’d catch you up on the progress and share a few hints of what’s to come.

Weekend Wanderlust: No.36 | Inspired by Charm

Paint – This weekend I painted my dining room. If you are following me on Instagram, this won’t come as a surprise. But yes, the yellowish orange has been replaced with a new and beautiful gray. I’m actually working on a little project with Target and Nate Berkus. Yes, THE Nate Berkus. (I got to talk to him on the phone for almost 10 minutes! I’m still pinching myself.) Anyway, I’ll be sharing more details about the revamped space next week.

Peek – In the meantime, I thought I would give you a sneak peek at some of the new products from the Nate Berkus collection that are going to be making their way into my dining room. I can’t wait to show you everything.

Weekend Wanderlust: No.36 | Inspired by Charm

Hang – I was also busy doing some other handy things this weekend. I finally hung barn doors over the little prop closet in my office. They are pretty amazing! But, of course, I’m going to make you wait for the full reveal.

Weekend Wanderlust: No.36 | Inspired by Charm

Decorate – In other styling news, I finally got a new coffee table. I’ve had my eye on this one from Wayfair for quite some time and finally pulled the trigger. It’s perfect! I love the detail on the wood top, and the tones in the wood match my hardwood floors perfectly. Plus, the metal base works nicely with my curtain rods. It’s a win all around!

Celebrate – I’m a little behind with this, but last week we celebrated my mom’s birthday! I was in charge of the cake. I ended up making this 14 Layer Cake I found via Bakerella. It was delicious! Happy Birthday, Mom!

Weekend Wanderlust: No.36 | Inspired by Charm

Read – Recently, I’ve been reading The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz. It’s certainly providing a lot of encouragement, guidance, and ideas for tackling my 52 Habits. I highly recommend it.

Watch – And I will leave you with this. Apparently it’s a commercial for a cell phone company in England. It’s pretty much one of my all-time favorite commercials. Enjoy!

Have a great week, everyone!

A couple weeks ago I was on the phone and the person on the other end said to me, “Your style has changed.” At first I thought to myself, “You don’t know what you’re talking about. It has not!”. Then, after checking myself, I realized my style has most certainly changed. From my office / living room makeover, to magazines I’m reading, to the pins I’m posting on Pinterest, I realized I have a whole new appreciation for a different design aesthetic. I think I was initially turned off by the comment because my brain subconsciously thought change equals something bad. However, after letting it sink in for a minute, I realized change is a great thing! Plus design is a journey and a process. I appreciate the fact that my tastes have changed and that I think I’m growing and learning and pushing a little out of my comfort zone. And along the way, I’m discovering myself and learning what I really love. I don’t want to get into too much detail about this year (I’ll save it for another post.), but I felt it was necessary to mention that before getting into the meat of today’s post.

My Bedroom: Before | Inspired by Charm

As you may have guessed from the title, I’ve decided to redo my bedroom. I had so much fun creating this space here with you all on IBC, but I’m ready for an update. When I closed my B&B last year, this space became my room as it was the biggest bedroom in the house. Other than getting some new bed linens and adding in a few accessories, I really didn’t change much. So because of that and my new approach to design, I’m ready for a shift.

My Bedroom: Before | Inspired by Charm

In fact, you’ll notice this space already looks a little different. (You can see old pictures here and here.) I think it was Tuesday night around 11 pm when I got this brilliant idea to move some furniture around. If you’re new here, my bedroom is actually two rooms. One room is for the bed; the other is a little sitting / clothes storage area. So that evening I switched the two. And to be honest, the switch was kind of genius. Both spaces function so much better now.

My Bedroom: Before | Inspired by Charm

The only disadvantage (and the reason these rooms weren’t set up this way initially) is that the front room faces the road and I’m on a semi-busy street. So there is some traffic noise at night, but I’m a heavy sleeper so it really doesn’t bother me. Other than that, it’s perfect.

So today, I thought I would share the basic plans and show you a couple inspiration images. Sound good?

Even though I dread the thought, I’m probably going to paint the walls. I want a color that’s almost white, but a shade different from the trim so it still pops. At this point, I haven’t picked a color. Suggestions are welcome.

With that, I’m probably going to start fresh with new linens and curtains. Don’t worry, I’ll keep my DIY forged nail curtain rods. Obviously artwork and accessories will change too. Maybe even a new chair.

My Bedroom: Before | Inspired by Charm

(Oh, and I wanted to point out that my little DIY tabletop cactus garden is totally thriving! I’m so proud of it.)

The biggest change will happen in what used to be the bedroom area. When this house was turned into a B&B, most of the closet spaces were turned into bathrooms, meaning that I have no storage space. Trying to find room for my clothes has been a nightmare from day one. So, this room is going to turn into one big ol’ walk-in closet. And let me tell you, I’m pretty psyched about it.

My Bedroom: Before | Inspired by Charm

Lots will change in the space, including installation of some sort of closet system. I’m trying to decide if I want to do something that’s open or something behind doors. I’d like to get a big mirror in here (which I already own) and maybe a really cozy leather chair.

My Bedroom: Before | Inspired by Charm

(Yes, that is my coffee table from my living room, which could only mean one thing! Hint. Hint.)

The overall look for this space is going to be calm and relaxed with pops of color and a masculine weirdness. Basically, a space that makes me calm but still super happy. Here are some of the inspiration images I’ve been lusting over.

Get it? I love inspiration hunting!

Even though it’s bittersweet to change up this space so soon, with a brave new style and a desire to make this home really mine, I’m ready. And I’m thrilled to be able to share it all with you.

Enjoy your weekend! I’ll see you back here Monday. I have a few other home-related projects I’m eager to share with you. Until then . . .

The other day I came across these rather large ceramic cacti created by artist Lina Cofán. At first glance, I assumed they were miniatures. I thought they would be cute on a shelf or coffee table as a little decorative accessory. However, upon further investigation I realized they were actually large ceramic sculptures so they weren’t going to work as I had hoped.

DIY Clay Cactus Garden | Inspired by Charm

That’s when I decided to make some small cacti of my own. I’s actually been wanting to do a project with clay and this was the perfect opportunity. I ended up getting 1.75 lbs of Sculpey oven-bake clay through Amazon. This was plenty (with a bit left over) to make all five of these adorable little guys.

With ready hands and a can-do attitude, I got to work on my little colorful clay garden. At first I thought I had a project fail on my hands, but once I worked with the clay a bit, things came together beautifully. I’m thrilled with how the little cacti turned out.

DIY Clay Cactus Garden | Inspired by Charm

Let me show you how to make them and also tell you about a few lessons I learned along the way.

DIY Clay Cactus Garden

Here’s what you will need:

oven-bake clay (I used Sculpey.)
clay tools (A toothpick would also work.)
baking sheet
acrylic craft paint
paint brushes
Sculpey gloss glaze

Begin by shaping your various cacti. I used some of Lina’s as well as real cacti as models and came up with a few ideas of my own. The clay may be a bit flimsy so try and keep it as thick as possible while still maintaining your design.

DIY Clay Cactus Garden | Inspired by Charm

I did make a small hole in the bottom of some of the thicker pieces just so they would bake more quickly and I wouldn’t use up too much clay. I rolled out little snakes of clay to add texture to one cactus. For another one, I cut out a star shape to create a little flower on top.

DIY Clay Cactus Garden | Inspired by Charm

Once you’ve shaped your cacti, use the clay tools or a toothpick to add texture.

DIY Clay Cactus Garden | Inspired by Charm

Next, your cacti are ready to bake. Follow the directions on the package. I baked mine at 275 degrees F for about 45 minutes. Check on them while they are baking to make sure they stay intact.

DIY Clay Cactus Garden | Inspired by Charm

DIY Clay Cactus Garden | Inspired by Charm

After they are baked and completely cooled, paint them whatever color you’d like. I used various shades of green. For each cactus, I used two colors just to give them a little dimension.

DIY Clay Cactus Garden | Inspired by Charm

And finally, to give your cactus a glossy ceramic look, apply two coats of gloss glaze, allowing it to dry in-between coats.

Finito! Your adorable little cacti garden is complete.

DIY Clay Cactus Garden | Inspired by Charm

Tell me, aren’t they freakin’ adorable!? They will be such a unique accessory for a bookshelf or on a coffee table. These could also make a wonderful table setting decoration or a favor for a party. What do you think?

DIY Clay Cactus Garden | Inspired by Charm

I think mine will eventually find a home in my office / living room space. I’m just in love with them.

Anyway, that’s it for today. I hope you enjoyed this little project. Join me back here tomorrow for an extra special post! You don’t want to miss it. I promise.

For the past couple months my houseplants have been driving me bananas. Luckily, I’ve been able to keep them alive, but they’ve been looking rather messy and totally unloved. Recently, I’ve had this idea to stick with all white planters. White is a common color throughout my house. This way if a plant needs to be moved to get more light or if I need a change of decor, then I can essentially move them wherever I like. Makes sense, right? Well, trying to find white planters in the dead of winter has been one of my most unsuccessful endeavors. Thankfully though, I was able to find a few to at least get me started with some of my plants.

I found very cool long oval shaped planter at Joann’s. It’s probably one of my favorites. You may also remember the little pig I found at HomeGoods on my shopping adventure with my mom. I also ended up getting my mom two of these adorable bird planters from West Elm. When I saw hers, I knew I needed a pair for myself.

Houseplant Love | Inspired by Charm

IMG_1059

I tend to shy away from planters without a hole on the bottom. I’ve killed too many plants from overwatering. Having good drainage helps me out a little bit. However, this time I took the risk. I put a few small stones in the bottom and will be extra mindful when it comes to watering. As you can see, I have a lot of succulents. After killing so many, I’ve finally realized that succulents love dry soil. Now I often go weeks without watering them and they seem to thrive. So if you tend to kill succulents, it’s probably from overwatering.

As I mentioned yesterday, I’m trying to declutter, do some spring cleaning, and get organized. Once that’s done these cute little planters will be distributed around the house to add a little life and color. At that point, I’ll share some tips for decorating with indoor plants. In the meantime though, I highly recommend checking out this Pinterest board. It’s created by a group of fabulous bloggers called Urban Jungle Bloggers. Seriously, the board is filled with gorgeous indoor plant inspiration. If they let me, I may even join along each month to share ideas. It would definitely be an interesting challenge, plus it would help me take better care of my own plants.

A few months ago I made a pretty cool DIY bulletin board. Other than staging it to take some pictures for the blog, however, I really haven’t used it much. As I shared on Monday, I’m starting some new habits. And as cheesy as it may sound, one of them is starting a vision board. (This post is not about starting a vision board, but once I actually do that, I’ll share another post here telling you how I went about it.)

DIY Button Thumb Tacks | Inspired by Charm

But, before I can create a proper vision board, I needed some really cute thumb tacks. I know I’m not the first person to glue a button to a thumb tack, but good ideas need to be documented, right?

DIY Button Thumb Tacks | Inspired by Charm

So today I thought I’d share this quick, fun, and colorful tutorial for DIY Button Thumb Tacks.

DIY Button Thumb Tacks | Inspired by Charm

DIY Button Thumb Tacks

You will need:

Buttons (I found a pack of vintage ones at Goodwill)
E6000 glue
Thumb tacks (These are from the hardware department at Walmart.)

Now, I’m warning you. Things are about to get complicated. (Totally kidding, this couldn’t get any easier.)

Set all of your buttons face down on a flat surface.

Add a little glue to your thumb tack.

Then place it on the back of your button and allow it to dry for a few hours.

Ta-da! Adorable DIY Button Thumb Tacks. I told you this was going to be easy.

DIY Button Thumb Tacks | Inspired by Charm

In a matter of minutes, I had dozens made and now I’m ready to attack my vision board with vengeance. Because that’s the only proper way to attack a vision board, right?

DIY Button Thumb Tacks | Inspired by Charm

Hope you all are having a fabulous Thursday!

I’m thinking about trying out a few shorter posts like this on IBC every now and again. More meat, fewer words and pictures. Actual content aside, what do you think? Do you like the longer posts or prefer something short and to the point? If you could take a quick moment in the comments and let me know what you like best, it would be immensely appreciated!

Over the past several weeks my kitchen has been used more often than when I ran my little B&B. (That may be a stretch, but you get the idea.) Except for the cleanup, I find baking and cooking extremely therapeutic. Plus, the rewards for my efforts are always worth it.

Pistachio Shortbread Cookies with Dark Chocolate Filling | Inspired by Charm

As you know, I’ve been pushing myself to try some new things this year and hope to venture into more of the savory side of things soon. But for now, I’m happy to focus on the sweeter things in life.

Pistachio Shortbread Cookies with Dark Chocolate Filling | Inspired by Charm

Speaking of pushing myself, I’m always up for a good challenge. So when my friends at KitchenAid gave me the challenge to MAKE SHORTBREAD TALL, I was in! The only other time I’ve tried my hands at shortbread was when I made one of my family’s favorite cookies, this White Chocolate and Cherry Shortbread. KitchenAid wanted to see if I could make Pistachio Shortbread Cookie Sandwiches with a Dark Chocolate Filling. I was actually thrilled to get this challenge since I had never really made something like this before. And I love me some pistachios!

Pistachio Shortbread Cookies with Dark Chocolate Filling | Inspired by Charm

I was fortunate to find shelled pistachios at my local grocery store. (I figured I’d have to shell them so this was a big win!) I wanted to include pistachios in the dough and also sprinkle some on the cookies. For the dough, I needed the pistachios to be finely chopped – almost ground. I knew my KitchenAid® Food Processor, with its three power settings, ExactSlice™ System, and Ultra Wide Mouth™ Feed Tube, would meet the challenge. It’s capable of slicing, shredding, kneading, chopping and puréeing almost any food. I threw about a half a cup of shelled pistachios in with the standard blade, turned it on high and within minutes I had exactly what I was looking for. This would infuse the cookie with flavor without being overly crunchy.

I then threw in some more pistachios and gave them a quick buzz around, leaving them a little chunkier. This would add a nice crunch to the top of the cookie. Perfect!

Pistachio Shortbread Cookies with Dark Chocolate Filling | Inspired by Charm

With the pistachios ready, I pulled out my stand mixer to get the dough working. As I learned from the recipe, shortbread isn’t easy. It actually took me two attempts. So I thought I would share a couple tricks to make it easier for you.

Pistachio Shortbread Cookies with Dark Chocolate Filling | Inspired by Charm

First, make sure the butter is super soft. Leave it out overnight. When you are ready to make your dough, unwrap the butter, set it on a plate, and give it about 10 – 15 seconds in the microwave so it just starts to melt. Since there is no liquid in the dough, this helps to prevent your dough from getting too crumbly.

Pistachio Shortbread Cookies with Dark Chocolate Filling | Inspired by Charm

Second, when rolling out the dough, work in small batches. If the dough is still a little too crumbly, sprinkle it with a little milk. That will help to bring things back together. I think shortbread is one of those things, like pie crust, that you need to get comfortable with “how it feels” before you can perfect your art.

Pistachio Shortbread Cookies with Dark Chocolate Filling | Inspired by Charm

Pistachio Shortbread Cookies with Dark Chocolate Filling | Inspired by Charm

The chocolate filling and glaze are very simple to make and come together quickly. I used dark chocolate, but if you prefer milk chocolate, feel free to make the substitution.

Let me show you how to make these.

Pistachio Shortbread Cookies with Dark Chocolate Filling | Inspired by Charm

Pistachio Shortbread Cookies with Dark Chocolate Filling

Here's what you will need:

Pistachio Shortbread Cookies:
3 sticks unsalted butter, softened
1 cup sugar, plus extra for sprinkling
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
3 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1/4 cups pistachios, very finely chopped
1/8 teaspoon salt

Chocolate filling:
1 stick butter, softened
1 1/2 cup powdered sugar
3 tablespoons special dark cocoa powder
2 tablespoons milk
1 tablespoon vanilla

Chocolate drizzle:
6 ounces dark chocolate
1 tablespoon Crisco
1/8 cup pistachios, coarsely chopped

In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, cream together the butter and 1 cup sugar until combined. Then add the vanilla.

Next add the flour, pistachios, and salt to the mixture. Mix on low speed until the dough starts to come together. Shape the dough into a flat disc, wrap in plastic and chill for at least 30 minutes.

Once the dough is chilled, preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.

On a lightly floured surface roll out the dough so that it is 1/4-inch thick. Cut out the cookies with a round cookie cutter or the top of a round glass. Place the cookies on an ungreased baking sheet and sprinkle with sugar. Bake for 15 to 18 minutes, until the edges begin to brown. Allow to cool at room temperature.

To make the filling, in your mixer fitted with the whisk attachment, combine the butter, powdered sugar, cocoa powder, milk, and vanilla. Mix until smooth. If necessary, you can add more milk for a smoother filling or more powdered sugar to stiffen it up.

Once the cookies are cool, fill a piping bag or a plastic baggie with the chocolate filling. Pipe onto half of the cookies. Then top with a second cookie and gently press until the filling spreads to the edges.

For the drizzle, melt the chocolate chips and shortening in a microwavable bowl (or in a double broiler). Allow the mixture to cool slightly, then transfer to a plastic bag. Snip off a tiny portion of one corner of the bag and drizzle the chocolate on top of the cookies. Sprinkle with chopped pistachios for a garnish.

And that completes your cookies. Grab a cup of milk, coffee, or tea and enjoy!

The combination of the sweet cookie, dark chocolate, and salty pistachios is kind of magical.

To make matters even better, they totally look like mini-masterpieces. What do you think? As you know from previous recipes I posted here, I especially love doing a cross-hatch with the chocolate. It’s simple, but looks so professional.

You are in for a treat today! Chocolate Chips. Now, I know what you’re thinking, “That sounds a little strange, Michael.” However, I promise you they are so delicious. It’s the salty-sweet combo that makes these such an epic treat!

Chocolate Chip | Inspired by Charm

Also, deliciousness doesn’t get much easier than this. What you have here is potato chips, drizzled with milk and white chocolate, plus a few festive sprinkles. To die for.

Chocolate Chip | Inspired by Charm

You can whip up a batch of these in no time and your Valentine won’t even be able to find the words to thank you.. Plus, they look totally adorable in my new bowl.

Chocolate Chip | Inspired by Charm

Before I show you how to make them, here are a couple things to note. The amount of chocolate you use is totally up to you. That’s why the measurements vary below. If you prefer, use dark chocolate, just milk chocolate, etc. Also, I like plain old Lay’s potato chips for this. However, if you like crinkle cut or a different brand, go for it. Feel free to get creative and toss in some pretzels, M&Ms, or whatever else your Valentine likes. Finally, as mentioned in the recipe, I let my chocolate firm when before switching from white to milk. This just ensures the two types of chocolate don’t blend together.

Chocolate Chips

Here's what you will need:
1 bag (10 ounces) potato chips
2-3 cups white chocolate chips
2-3 cups milk chocolate chips
2 tablespoons Crisco
Sprinkles (optional, but highly recommended)

Let's get baking:

On two baking sheet pans lined with wax or parchment paper, spread out your potato chips in a single layer.

In the microwave or a double broiler melt your white chocolate chips with one tablespoon of Crisco. Repeat this in a separate bowl with your milk chocolate chips.

Then drizzle the chips with your melted white chocolate. Add a few sprinkles and allow the chocolate to set. (If it's cold where you are, place them outdoors for a minute. If you live in a warm climate, a few minute in the refrigerator will help speed up the process.) Repeat with the milk chocolate.

Again, let your chocolate set. Then, using another baking sheet lined with wax paper, carefully flip your chips over, so you can apply more chocolate to the opposite side.

Repeat drizzling with the white and milk chocolate, allowing it to set in between. Don't forget your sprinkles.

Finally, allow your chocolate to set completely. Once hard, gently break up the chips into smaller pieces. Store in an airtight container to maintain freshness.

Again, if you are a fan of the salty and sweet combination you are going to love these. Not kidding, I could probably eat this whole bowl and then some. I know it might sound like an odd combination, but trust me on this one.

So go whip up a batch and let me know what you think!

Last Friday I kind of bailed on you. I showed you lots of new things in my living room, but failed to provide any sources. To be honest, I had a big ol’ case of the Fridays and I was just ready for the weekend.

So, as promised, I’m popping back in today to share some sources for those who are interested. If I’ve missed something or you have questions, let me know in the comments below and I’ll do my best to answer them. Also, this week or next I’m going to create a paint color post. This post will give information on all of the paint colors throughout my house. I get paint questions a lot so I figure it would be best to tackle it in one post. I’ll create a button for the sidebar and update the post when anything gets repainted. The sidebar button will also make the post easy to find.

I should also mention that in the living room, things are not necessarily where I want them to be. I bought a few things simply because I loved them, not because they go perfectly in the space. Once I get things situated in other rooms I can share better pictures of a more completed look. Anyway. Here we go.

I tried to snap a few new pictures, but I’m also recycling some from Friday.

First up, the sofa is the Henry Sectional in Performance Gray from West Elm. I’ve had it for about a month and I’m still in love with it. With two cats, I also find it pretty easy to clean.

The brass glass and mirror tiered side table is also from West Elm. The faux marble tray (no longer available) and glass gem are both from the Nate Berkus collection at Target. The patterned rug is this one from CB2.

The gorgeous turquoise lamp is from Lamps Plus. If you’ll notice, the base of the lamp perfectly matches the color around my fireplace. The Color+Plus collection uses colors from Sherwin Williams and others to create their lamps.

On to pillows! The bear with the red glasses and the turquoise pillows are from CB2. The multicolor pillow is from Crate and Barrel, but is no longer available.

The “Hello” pillow is from The Land of Nod and the ikat pillow is from the Islimi Etsy Shop.

I’m also trying out my green chevron lamp in this space. It’s one of my favorites and was from HomeGoods last year. The terrarium (which is still alive) is from RedEnvelope. The coasters were a DIY. You can find out how to make them here.

Last but not least. I found these tall brass lamps at HomeGoods. (I just heard from someone via Instagram that she spotted some at her HomeGoods!) The gold cake stand is from Ballard Designs. (It’s currently 40% off. Love that!) The pink dresser is vintage and the bulletin board is a DIY. You can see how I made that here.

I think that covers everything! Again, if you have questions, give me a holler in the comments. If not, I’ll meet you back here tomorrow with another sweet Valentine treat!

Last Friday I kind of bailed on you. I showed you lots of new things in my living room, but failed to provide any sources. To be honest, I had a big ol’ case of the Fridays and I was just ready for the weekend. So, as promised, I’m popping back in today to share […]

Normally, I would let Valentine’s Day go by unnoticed. It’s really not my favorite holiday. This year, however, I decided to push myself to get a little bit into the holiday spirit.

DIY Valentine's Day Treat Bags | Inspired by Charm

In addition to sharing my Sweetie Martini and Sugar Cookies with Cotton Candy Frosting, I’m also going to show you how to make a fun and useful craft. I’m part of the Lowe’s Creative Blogging Team and periodically we are given a challenge. This month, one of the challenges was Valentine’s Day. After hearing this, I knew pretty quickly what I wanted to make.

DIY Valentine's Day Treat Bags | Inspired by Charm

One of my favorite crafting supplies is actually available at Lowe’s. It’s drop cloth. I’ve used this stuff in a few projects here on IBC. It’s relatively inexpensive, a great neutral surface, and very easy to work with.

DIY Valentine's Day Treat Bags | Inspired by Charm

Today, I’m going to show you how to make these adorable DIY Valentine’s Day Treat Bags. What I love about this project is that the basic steps are pretty simple. From there you can let your creative juices flow and really have fun.

DIY Valentine’s Day Treat Bags

For this project you will need:

drop cloth
fabric paint
paint brush or pouncer sponge
sewing machine and thread (or fusible webbing)
iron and ironing board
scissors
ruler
paper
ribbon, candy, wine, and flower are optional, but highly recommended

The first step is to cut the drop cloth for your bags. One thing I love about this material is that it tears easily – and in a straight line. Just mark the location where you want to cut with a snip of your scissors; then tear!

DIY Valentine's Day Treat Bags | Inspired by Charm

I made two different sizes here. For the shorter bag, you’ll want a piece that measures 6 x 18 inches. For the taller bag, you’ll need a piece that’s 5 x 24 inches. However, you can make these bags any size you wish. Once cut, iron your pieces.

DIY Valentine's Day Treat Bags | Inspired by Charm

Next, you’ll want to create nice edges for the top of your bag. On the two shorter edges of your bag, fold over the drop cloth a quarter of an inch. Then fold over another quarter of an each. Then iron to hold in place. As you can see, this will hide any rough edges. Do this on both sides.

DIY Valentine's Day Treat Bags | Inspired by Charm

Then, with your sewing machine, sew a line through the folded-over fabric to hold it in place. Repeat this step on the other side. (If you don’t have a sewing machine, you could easily substitute fusible webbing for any stitching involved in making these bags.)

DIY Valentine's Day Treat Bags | Inspired by Charm

Next, fold your piece of fabric in half with the two right sides facing each other. Then, simply sew up each side. The bottom of the bag will be created by the fold in the fabric and won’t require any sewing.

DIY Valentine's Day Treat Bags | Inspired by Charm

Then, trim off excess threads and turn your bag right side out. Give your bag a quick press to make the surface flat before painting.

DIY Valentine's Day Treat Bags | Inspired by Charm

Now, you’re ready to paint. I used shades of pink and red for my bags, but you can use whatever colors that will work for your project. I prefer working with the Tulip brand fabric paint. For my treat bag artwork, I kept things simple by cutting out a heart from a piece of white paper. Using a pouncer sponge, I added in the color. Some hearts I kept solid, other I added a gradient effect.

DIY Valentine's Day Treat Bags | Inspired by Charm

This is where you can get creative. Draw Xs and Os, write out a poem with a Sharpie permanent marker, paint on words or “kisses” – just have fun. For my bags, I really liked the simplicity of the hearts so I went with that.

DIY Valentine's Day Treat Bags | Inspired by Charm

Once you are finished painting, let your completed projects dry for at least 3 hours.

DIY Valentine's Day Treat Bags | Inspired by Charm

After that, your DIY Valentine Treat Bags are complete!

Aren’t they adorable?

DIY Valentine's Day Treat Bags | Inspired by Charm

These bags have so many fun uses, too!

DIY Valentine's Day Treat Bags | Inspired by Charm

First, you have your basic treat bag. Fill it with some candies and tie a ribbon around the top to seal in the goodies.

DIY Valentine's Day Treat Bags | Inspired by Charm

These bags also make a great vase cover. Here, I just slid a basic drinking glass inside a bag and added some water. A quick ribbon around the top and some inexpensive flowers make a beautiful and unique arrangement.

DIY Valentine's Day Treat Bags | Inspired by Charm

The longer bag worked perfectly for a wine bottle! A fun ribbon and some treats tucked into the top make this a delightful Valetine’s treat!

DIY Valentine's Day Treat Bags | Inspired by Charm

See what I mean? There are so many options.

And that “wraps” up another project here on IBC. Do you think you’ll give these bags a try?

Sweetie Martini | Inspired by Charm #drinksandlink

Today I thought it would be fun to share a sweet and creamy cocktail for Valentine’s Day. (Oh, and if you’re looking for more sweet Valentine’s Day treat ideas, be sure to visit this post HERE.)

It’s somewhat inspired by a cake batter martini, but kissed with color to make it perfectly appropriate for the upcoming holiday.

Plus, I had these really cute heart sprinkles that I wanted to use on something.

Sweetie Martini | Inspired by Charm #drinksandlink

The result is this creamy, sweet, and soft martini, similar to a melted milkshake. I was having a hard time coming up with a name (because of my creative standstill) so I asked my BFF.

Without hesitation, she said, “Sweetie Martini”. It was perfect! (Thanks, Krista.)

Peanut Butter Pie made bite-sized in a chocolate crust are not only delicious, but gorgeous too! These Bite-Sized Peanut Butter Pies with Chocolate Crusts will quickly become a favorite by you and anyone you’re willing toe share them with!

Bite-Sized Peanut Butter Pies with Chocolate Crust | Inspired by Charm #ayearofpie

Wow!. It seems as though I’ve been baking up a storm around here lately. From pies to cookies to popcorn – apparently I have a big sweet tooth these days. Anyway, I came up with this idea for mini peanut butter pies late last week and couldn’t get it out of my head. I just had to give it a try as soon as possible.

Bite-Sized Peanut Butter Pie with Chocolate Crust:

I know that I was thinking about making a savory pie for the next recipe in my year of pie series, but when something comes along that involves peanut butter and chocolate, it takes precedence.

Bite-Sized Peanut Butter Pies with Chocolate Crust | Inspired by Charm #ayearofpie

Now, I’ve made a lot of recipes here on Inspired by Charm, but I can say with certainty that these Bite-Sized Peanut Butter Pies are officially in my top five. The combination of chocolate and peanut butter is probably my all-time favorite, so it’s not a surprise that I love these so much.

How to Make Peanut Butter Pie with Chocolate Crust:

I was also super excited to try out this crust recipe. First, it’s made in a food processor. I’ve always wanted to try this approach ever since I saw Ina Garten do it on the Barefoot Contessa. Secondly, it involves chocolate.

Bite-Sized Peanut Butter Pies with Chocolate Crust | Inspired by Charm #ayearofpie

I was actually surprised how wonderfully easy this dough came together. Other than paying attention to how much water (or in this case coffee) you are adding, it pretty much mixes itself. I may be convinced that a food processor is the way to go when it comes to making pie dough.

Bite-Sized Peanut Butter Pies with Chocolate Crust | Inspired by Charm #ayearofpie

You’ll notice the dough recipe calls for iced coffee. (This is yet another tip I learned from my friend, Ina. [She’s not really my friend, I just like saying that. However, I think we would be friends if we met some day. But then again, I think everyone assumes that.]) I think she made brownies once, or maybe it was chocolate cupcakes, and used coffee instead of plain water. Apparently coffee enhances the chocolate flavor. Now anytime I’m making something with chocolate, I try to incorporate a little coffee flavor. Honestly, it really seems to help. If you’re not a fan of coffee, or don’t have any on hand, I assume plain ice water will work fine in this recipe.

Bite-Sized Peanut Butter Pies with Chocolate Crust | Inspired by Charm #ayearofpie

For the filling, I simply followed a standard recipe for peanut butter pie filling. I used a plastic baggie to pipe it into the little shells. (I really need to invest in some proper piping bags and tips at some point.) However, it worked beautifully. I did the same thing for the chocolate drizzle.

IMG_0051

I also added a few chopped peanuts to about half of my bite-sized pies for a little garnish and a little crunch. Depending on your crowd, you can add these or leave them off.

Bite-Sized Peanut Butter Pies with Chocolate Crust | Inspired by Charm #ayearofpie

And if these photos haven’t given you enough encouragement, I really must insist you try this recipe. I was able to pass a few of these out to family and friends yesterday afternoon. Everyone gave them rave reviews.

Bite-Sized Peanut Butter Pies with Chocolate Crust | Inspired by Charm #ayearofpie

So, without further ado, let me show you how to make them.

And that’s it, friends!

I know it may sound a little complicated, but they come together quickly. And I promise, they are worth the time.

Bite-Sized Peanut Butter Pies with Chocolate Crust | Inspired by Charm #ayearofpie

The filling is obviously delicious and, as I mentioned above, I absolutely love this pie crust! It’s flaky, light, and the perfect amount of chocolately goodness.

Plus, the cuteness factor of this bite-sized pies is clearly off the scale. Based on how they look, you know they are going to be dynamite before they even cross your lips. Right?

I hope you enjoyed this recipe and I really hope you are loving A Year of Pie as much as I am. Have a fab day, everyone!

Peanut Butter Pie made bite-sized in a chocolate crust are not only delicious, but gorgeous too! These Bite-Sized Peanut Butter Pies with Chocolate Crusts will quickly become a favorite by you and anyone you're willing toe share them with!

Ingredients

Chocolate Crust:
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 4 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 4 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1 stick unsalted butter - cold
  • 4 tablespoons Crisco - (vegetable shortening)
  • 2 yolks from large eggs
  • 6 - 8 tablespoons iced coffee - ice water will work as well
Peanut Butter Filling:
Chocolate Drizzle:
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 tablespoon Crisco
  • Chopped peanuts - optional

Instructions

  • In a food processor (you can also do this by hand if needed), combine the flour, cocoa, sugar, and salt on low until blended. Add the butter and Crisco and pulse until the mixture resembles coarse crumbles. Add the egg yolks and iced coffee and process with slow pulses until the dough forms a ball. Start with about 5 tablespoons of iced coffee and add more until the mixture comes together.
  • Press the dough into two flatten discs. Wrap in plastic and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
  • Then, preheat your oven to 350 degrees F.
  • On a floured surface, roll out your dough until it is about 1/8 inch thick. Then cut out the dough using a flour shaped cookie cutter. My cookie cutter is 3-inches in diameter petal tip to petal tip. Once your first set of flowers are cut, you can ball up the dough and roll it out again. Repeat until you have used as much of the dough as possible.
  • Gently press the flowers into an ungreased mini muffin pan. Bake at 350 degrees F for 12 -15 minutes.
  • Allow the mini pie shells to cool completely in the pan before removing. This will ensure they keep their shape.
  • While they are cooling, mix up the peanut butter pie filling. Beat the peanut butter with the cream cheese and vanilla until smooth. Then add the powdered sugar, beating again until smooth. Add in the Cool Whip and beat the mixture one final time until smooth.
  • Add this filling into a piping bag or large plastic bag. Pipe into your cooled chocolate pie shells.
  • For the drizzle, melt the chocolate chips and shortening in a microwavable bowl (or in a double broiler). Allow the mixture to cool slightly, then transfer to a plastic bag. Snip off a tiny portion of one corner of the bag and drizzle the chocolate onto the filled pie shells. Top with chopped peanut for a garnish.

I ended up making about six different types of cookies over Christmas. However, being under a bit of a time crunch and needing a break from the Internet, I failed to blog about any of them. Sorry about that.

Sugar Cookies with Cotton Candy Frosting | Inspired by Charm

With Valentine’s Day on the horizon I thought this would be a good time to revisit one of my favorite cookies, but with a little twist. So, today I’m sharing a classic sugar cookie recipe with you. I feel that sugar cookies are a little like pie crust. Everyone has a favorite. Some people like them thicker; others prefer them thin. Some folks have to have them frosted; others just want a little sugar sprinkled on top. My dad likes his plain, thick, and heated up in the microwave. Today, I’m going to share my mom’s sugar cookie recipe that I’ve come to know and love. My great uunt also has a recipe for a much thicker cookie that I’ve actually never made. I will share that recipe as soon as I can get my hands on it.

Sugar Cookies with Cotton Candy Frosting | Inspired by Charm

When I was growing up, my mom, grandma, and I made these cookies every Christmas. My mom made the dough and was in charge of the rolling and baking. Grandma frosted the cookies and I decorated them. The frosting was always white and the decorations were always a variety of sprinkles. It was cold outside when we made them, so after they were frosted and decorated we’d put them on trays, cutting boards, and whatever else we could find and put them in the garage so the frosting could set before we packed them away. I always looked forward to that day. Always.

Sugar Cookies with Cotton Candy Frosting | Inspired by Charm

Nowadays, things have changed, I’m the one in charge of making the sugar cookies. And, while they are a tad time consuming, there’s something wonderfully nostalgic about them, so I’ll continue to make them with joy year after year.

Sugar Cookies with Cotton Candy Frosting | Inspired by Charm

However, this time around I decided to give them a fun little twist. A few months ago I bought a couple bottles of cotton candy extract (you can find it on Amazon) for another recipe which I ended up making. So, I thought I’d try out the extract in the recipe. While it doesn’t drastically alter the flavor, it definitely adds something different and delicious to these cookies. Plus, they smell even more heavenly than your typical sugar cookie.

Sugar Cookies with Cotton Candy Frosting | Inspired by Charm

I opted to add a little color to my frosting as well to emphasize the cotton candy theme.

Sugar Cookies with Cotton Candy Frosting | Inspired by Charm

The cookies turned out pretty cute, didn’t they? Of course, how can a sugar cookie covered in frosting with sprinkles on top be anything but cute.

Sugar Cookies with Cotton Candy Frosting | Inspired by Charm

If your mouth is watering, it’s understandable. Let me help you by showing you how to make them.

Sugar Cookies with Cotton Candy Frosting

makes about 3 dozen cookies

Here's what you will need:
Sugar Cookies:
4 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup Crisco
1 1/2 cups sugar
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/2 cup buttermilk

Cotton Candy Frosting:
1/2 cup Crisco
1/2 cup butter (softened)
5 cups confectioners' sugar
6 tablespoons milk
1/2 teaspoon cotton candy extract
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
Food coloring (optional)

In a large bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.

In a stand mixer, with the paddle attachment, cream together the Crisco, sugar, eggs, and vanilla. Once combined, add in half of the dry ingredients. Begin to mix and then add in the buttermilk. Then add in the rest of the dry ingredients and mix until just combined. Refrigerate the dough for at least four hours or overnight.

For the frosting, cream together the Crisco and butter. Slowly add in the confectioner's sugar, alternating with the milk as necessary. Before completely combined add in the cotton candy extract and the vanilla extract. Food coloring can be added at this time as well. If you prefer a stronger flavor, add more extract until you achieve the desired flavor. More milk can be added if you feel the frosting is too thick. The frosting does not need to be refrigerated before use.

After your dough has properly chilled, preheat your oven to 300 degrees F.

On a well-floured surface, roll out about 1/4 of the dough. You'll want the dough to be about 1/8- to 1/4-inch thick, depending on your preference. Cut the dough out with your favorite cookie cutters. Transfer to an ungreased cookie sheet. Bake for 10 minutes or until the first sign of browning appears on the surface of the cookie. Remove from the oven and allow to cool completely, then add the frosting and sprinkles.

Print

And that’s it.

Sugar Cookies with Cotton Candy Frosting | Inspired by Charm

I feel that part of making a good sugar cookie is practice. The first time I made them I rolled out my dough too thin and baked them for too long. They were about as crunchy as a Nilla Wafers. Just take your time and have patience.

Sugar Cookies with Cotton Candy Frosting | Inspired by Charm

Old family recipes are often based on weird factors like “how the dough feels” or “the right consistency of the frosting.” These things will make absolutely no sense until you do it a few times. And eventually it will make perfect sense. This is why our parents’ and grandparents’ recipes were always the best. They knew those secret little touches that were really never explained in the recipe.

Sugar Cookies with Cotton Candy Frosting | Inspired by Charm

Anywho, I really hope you enjoy this recipe! It was a pleasure sharing it with you. Happy baking, my friends!

By the way, the amazing cutting board above is from RedEnvelope. I’m kind of obsessed with it. You can check it out here.

The other night I had this genius (and what I thought to be original) idea to make red velvet popcorn. I’ve seen other flavors of popcorn floating around the net, plus with Valentine’s Day on the horizon, it sounded like a pretty epic idea. I should have known better. Someone (well, several someones) beat me to the punch.

Red Velvet Popcorn | Inspired by Charm

On Instagram, I posted a screen shot of the handful of red velvet popcorn recipes I found on Pinterest. I was feeling a little deflated. However thanks to some encouragement from some of Instagram followers, I decided to try the recipe out for myself.

Red Velvet Popcorn | Inspired by Charm

After digging a little deeper, I found the person who seems to have created the recipe. And, to my surprise, I know her! The fabulous Shelly of Cookies and Cups is the genius behind this yumminess. I had the pleasure of meeting Shelly last fall on my trip to Oregon. If you have yet to discover her site, you’re missing out. Seriously. She makes things like Peanut Butter Cup Crack Brownies and Oreo Icebox Cake. I kid you not. Pure deliciousness. So once you’ve read this post, why not head on over there and say hello. Her pictures are gorgeous, too.

Red Velvet Popcorn | Inspired by Charm

Before we get into the details of how to make this lovely confection, I need to warn you. It’s unbelievably delicious. Now, I know I say that about a lot of things, but this stuff is super duper tasty. I’m trying to be good about what I eat, so it took every bit of my self-control not to push my entire face into this as it was drying on the counter. Seriously.

Red Velvet Popcorn | Inspired by Charm

Anyway, to make this you will need to bake a red velvet cake. I just used the box variety. If you follow the recipe below, you’re only going to need about 1/3 of the cake, which is kind of an ideal situation. I just whipped up a quick batch of frosting and sent the rest of the cake to my grandparents. They were happy. You could also make a bigger batch of the popcorn and use more of the cake. Either way, it’s clearly a win-win situation.

Red Velvet Popcorn | Inspired by Charm

To crumble the cake, just use your fingers. It’s a piece of cake. Pun intended.

Red Velvet Popcorn | Inspired by Charm

I also added a little Crisco to my chocolate when melting it. It seems to keep the chocolate softer when it dries.

Red Velvet Popcorn | Inspired by Charm

Cool? All right, onto the recipe!

Red Velvet Popcorn

Here's what you will need:
8 cups popped popcorn (1/2 cup unpopped kernels) (OR you could do what I did and pop two standard-size bags of popcorn in the microwave.)
3 cups red velvet cake crumbs (about 1/3 of a 9 x 13 cake)
22 oz. (2 bags) white chocolate chips
1 tablespoon of Crisco

Let's get poppin'!

First pop your popcorn using an air popper or the stove. Again, you can cheat like I did and just use the microwave variety. (I used plain fat-free popcorn.)

Next, melt your white chocolate chips along with the Crisco in a double broiler on the stove.

Transfer your popcorn to a large bowl, making sure to remove any unpopped kernels. Pour the melted chocolate over the popcorn and stir to coat completely.

Pour the popcorn onto a waxed paper lined service and sprinkle with your red velvet crumbs. To get a heavy crumb coating turn the popcorn over with a spoon and sprinkle again with the red velvet crumbs. Repeat this step until you're happy with the coverage.

Let the chocolate set before eating or packaging.

I promise you, this tastes as good as it looks.

Red Velvet Popcorn | Inspired by Charm

I just packaged mine in some cello bags I picked up at Walmart (in the wedding section) and tied each bag up with some coordinating ribbon I had on hand. It’s that simple.

This would obviously make a super cute Valentine’s treat. But I always like giving gifts “just because” so it would certainly work for that as well. Whoever you give it to will be overjoyed!

Red Velvet Popcorn | Inspired by Charm

Well folks, I’m signing off for the weekend. I hope you have a fabulous one. I’m going to be busy with some cleaning, organizing, and maybe a project or two. What are you up to?

I’ll meet you back here on Monday!

These Buffalo and Blue cheese Lil Smokies are a delicious and easy appetizer recipe. They make a delicious snack for the big game or any family / friend gathering!

Buffalo and Blue Cheese Lit'l Smokies | Inspired by Charm

Buffalo and Blue Cheese Lil Smokies:

I would be lying if I told you I love watching the Superbowl. Sports have never been my thing. However, I am actually a fan of Superbowl Sunday. Growing up, my aunt would host a big party. Nowadays, my brother typically throws some sort of get-together.

Because of this, the Superbowl has always been an occasion to hang out with family and friends (some of whom I haven’t seen since the holidays). Plus, there is the added benefit of tons of delicious food including lil smokies!

What Are Lil Smokies?:

Over the years, I’ve come to love the game-day staples such as wings, potato chips, dips of every kind, and of course, Lit’l Smokies. To me, those bites of goodness are essential to complete the party food round-up. In the past, I’ve wrapped them in bacon and simmered them in a delicious sauce in a slow cooker, but this year I wanted to try something a little different.

So, I decided to combine them with two of my favorite things: buffalo sauce and blue cheese.

Buffalo and Blue Cheese Lit'l Smokies | Inspired by Charm

Let me tell you, it’s a winning combination!

How to make Lil Smokies:

If you’re anything like me and like blue cheese and buffalo sauce together, these are going to be magic in your mouth. I also love how easy these are to prepare. It will certainly make your game day entertaining a breeze.

Buffalo and Blue Cheese Lil Smokies Dip:

Buffalo and Blue Cheese Lit'l Smokies

Here's what you'll need:
1 package Hillshire Farm Lit'l Smokies
1 can (8 oz.) crescent rolls
1/2 cup blue cheese crumbles

Buffalo Dipping Sauce
1/2 cup sour cream
1/2 cup mayonnaise
6 tablespoons buffalo wing sauce
4 tablespoons blue cheese crumbles

Begin by preheating your oven to 350 degrees F.

Open the can of crescent rolls. Using the perforations on the dough, divide into 8 triangles. Cut each triangle, lengthwise, into three pieces.

On the larger end of the triangle place a Lit'l Smokie and add a little of the blue cheese crumbles to either side. Carefully roll up the dough around the Lit'l Smokie and the blue cheese crumbles. Then, place them on a cookie sheet about 1 inch apart.

Bake 15 -18 minutes until golden brown.

For the Buffalo Dipping Sauce, combine all ingredients in a medium sized bowl. Whisk until smooth and well blended.

Okay, now I’m warning you. This is where things are going to get a little weird. A really good weird, though. Remember how our parents told us not to play with our food? Well, today I’m throwing that advice right out of the window.

As you probably figured out, I don’t actually watch the Superbowl, except for the halftime show. (And the commercials, you gotta love the commercials!) Anyway, this year Bruno Mars and the Red Hot Chili Peppers will be taking the stage (a far cry from last year’s Beyonce, but I’ll take it).

Buffalo and Blue Cheese Lit'l Smokies | Inspired by Charm

Over in my humble kitchen, however, IBC and the Lit’l Smokies will be taking the stage.

Buffalo and Blue Cheese Lit'l Smokies | Inspired by Charm

Yes, I created this adorable mini-band out of Lil Smokies and crescent rolls.

I’m all about the finishing details when it comes to entertaining and I’m pretty sure my little edible band will make quite the impression. What do you think?

Buffalo and Blue Cheese Lit'l Smokies | Inspired by Charm

As you can see, I made a tiny microphone out of sliced carrots and toothpicks. I even crafted a guitar. Plus, some paper straws, bakers twine, and washi tape make a banner for the stage. Too cute, right? I should point out that one of the band members is none other than Jabba the Hutt. He plays a mean guitar.

It’s all about the presentation, isn’t it?

I don’t know about you, but after the glitter and glow of the holidays season, I’m always a little desperate to bring freshness, color, and coziness back into my home. I finally managed to pack up and put away all of my holiday decor. (It took an embarrassingly long time this year.) And as much as I welcome a space that is less cluttered, I’m equally excited to bring back a dose of happy color.

A Fresh Mantelscape | Inspired by Charm

As you know from a few of my other posts, I’ve teamed up with Glade®  to share ways to create the best feeling in your home all year long. Because honestly, who doesn’t want that? I know I talk about it frequently, but I use color to make my home warm and welcoming.

To add a little life and color to my living room mantel, I picked up some inexpensive mini roses at my local grocery store. I thought they would create a simple mantelscape that was packed with personality.

A Fresh Mantelscape | Inspired by Charm

Before the holidays, I was also super lucky to stumble upon these gorgeous glasses at a local thrift store. The glasses are tucked into little silver holders. I had a feeling they would make perfect little vases. Boy, was I right!

A Fresh Mantelscape | Inspired by Charm

Keeping the mantel super simple, I just tucked the roses into the little glasses … er, vases. I decided to keep my Glade®   Limited Edition Collection Sparkling Spruce candles on display. The color and shape of the jars works beautifully. Plus, I’m still obsessed with the scent. Honestly, I’m still wishing emerald was the color of the year. I’m not really digging radiant orchid.

I also tucked in this gorgeous gem from the new Nate Berkus collection at Target. It works perfectly with the geometric shapes in the art on my mantel.

I really love a simple mantel such as this. It has just the right amount of color, sparkle, and vitality. Plus, it gives me an excuse to buy a bunch of flowers every week.

So I’m curious, how do you add color and life into your space after the holidays. I don’t know about you, but I’m ready for winter to be over.

Share your tips using #bestfeelings. And don’t forget to visit Glade®   on Facebook and Twitter to see how you can create the best feelings in your home.

Well folks, Pie #2 is complete.

Mixed Berry Slab Pie | Inspired by Charm #ayearofpie

As you probably know, I write bi-weekly posts for Better Homes and Gardens style blog, Style Spotters and their food blog, Delish Dish. I actually met the wonderful folks at BHG over a year ago at their first ever Stylemakers event in NYC. It has been a pure joy to be writing for them for over a year now. Their digital team is made up of some of the most fabulous and kind people I’ve ever had the good fortune to meet.

Mixed Berry Slab Pie | Inspired by Charm #ayearofpie

Anyway, the other day while I was on Pinterest, I saw a BHG recipe for Double Cherry Slab Pie. Making a slab pie was on my short list for A Year of Pie, so I took it as a sign that this should be Pie #2.

Mixed Berry Slab Pie | Inspired by Charm #ayearofpie

I was so happy to see that this crust was slightly different from the first one I made. This crust called for butter and shortening. Attempting different kinds of crusts is definitely a mandatory part of my pie-baking process.

When preparing posts for Delish Dish, we are challenged is to give recipes a fun tweak. So I took the double cherry pie and turned it into a mixed berry pie. My local grocery store had a gorgeous selection of blackberries, raspberries, and blueberries, and they were destined to be a part of a delicious pie. I found a few recipes online for mixed berry pies and adapted my filling based on those.

You can find the full recipe for this pie on the Delish Dish blog by clicking here.

Overall, I was really pleased with how this pie turned out. I also liked the crust. While my first crust was a little thicker and flakier, this crust was more delicate and light. I also rolled it out a lot thinner in order to cover the pan. This crust reminded me more of the crust my mom and grandma make.

Mixed Berry Slab Pie | Inspired by Charm #ayearofpie

The only change I would make to this is serving it with a huge scoop of vanilla ice cream. I didn’t have any on hand when I was photographing this, and I wanted to show this particular pie without it. Ice cream would have put this pie over the top in the deliciousness department. But then again, I prefer any fruit pie with ice cream.

Mixed Berry Slab Pie | Inspired by Charm #ayearofpie

So that wraps up my second pie. Again, you can find the recipe here.

I’m thinking about trying a savory pie next. Do you have any recipe recommendations? Feel free to leave links in the comments below.

As I mentioned yesterday, I spent some time this past weekend doing a little indoor gardening. Before I go on, however, I have a confession. In the past, I have made multiple attempts at indoor miniature gardens. I planted succulents in creamers and glass jars and tried terrariums in myriad containers and cloches. No matter what I did, my mini-gardens never survived.

Fern Terrarium | Inspired by Charm

This time around I decided to cheat a bit. I found a DIY terrarium kit that literally includes everything you need to make this adorable fern garden.

Fern Terrarium | Inspired by Charm

While I’m normally all about DIY, I thought this kit was a pretty good deal. I figured out that by the time I purchased all of the individual pieces for this, I would end up spending about as much, if not more. Plus, there are step-by-step directions so hopefully I did things right and can keep this bad boy alive.

However, if you are the die-hard DIY type, I will fill you in on the steps to create this.

First, you will need a container. I’m obsessed with this one because of its shape and gold color. Next, put in a layer of small pebbles. This helps with drainage.

Fern Terrarium | Inspired by Charm

Then, add a layer of activated charcoal. In a closed environment, such as that in a terrarium, the charcoal helps to filter the air and keep it fresh. On top of the charcoal, place a later of moss. This will keep the soil from falling down into your pebbles.

Fern Terrarium | Inspired by Charm

Next, add your plants and soil.

Fern Terrarium | Inspired by Charm

Finally, you can put in a few decorative items like reindeer moss and larger pebbles.

Fern Terrarium | Inspired by Charm

And that’s it. Pretty cute, right?

Fern Terrarium | Inspired by Charm

I think the completed terrarium looks totally awesome. Right now I have it sitting on my coffee table. Typically, terrariums shouldn’t get direct sunlight because can the plants can burn through the glass. I’m hoping this spot will provide just the right amount of light.

The kit also comes with a small sprayer bottle to add moisture when necessary.

If you want to recreate this look, you can find this kit by clicking here. If you’re not in a rush, keep your eyes peeled because now and then RedEnvelope has sales or offers free shipping. Gotta love that!

Hello, friends! Today I’m back with a fun little DIY. Right before the holidays I came across an image of felt ball coasters. You may have noticed that these little felt balls have been popping up all around craftland. I saw lots of them this past holiday season in garlands and ornaments. Wanting to get crafty with these little guys, I decided to make some colorful coasters for my new office space!

I ended up ordering felt balls from this fab Etsy shop. (The shop owner Claire is a delight!) You can buy the felt balls in multicolor packs or pick whatever combination of colors you like best. I did both. I used the 1cm size for this particular project.

DIY Wool Felt Ball Coasters | Inspired by Charm

As I’ll describe below, I basically glued the balls to some clearance cork coasters I found at TJ Maxx. After doing a little more research when writing this post, I realized that these felt balls could also be threaded onto string and then sewn together. This would eliminate the need for the cork coaster. This would also make the felt balls a bit closer together. I may try this method with a larger size ball. If I do, I’ll be sure to show you how.

DIY Wool Felt Ball Coasters | Inspired by Charm

I’m just super happy with how my coasters turned out. They appeared in this Instagram yesterday, and I was pleased to see that they received such a positive response!

Let me show you how I made them.

DIY Wool Felt Ball Coasters

Here’s what you’ll need:

1 cm wool felt balls (90-100 per coaster depending on the size)
cork coasters
E600 glue

DIY Wool Felt Ball Coasters | Inspired by Charm

Begin by gluing one felt ball to the center of your coaster.

I used a long wood skewer to place the glue where I wanted it. When I got to the other rings, I just put the glue directly onto the cork.

To keep the felt balls as tight as possible, you’ll want to stop and allow the glue to dry every so often as you work around each coaster. I worked on my coasters off and on throughout the day.

DIY Wool Felt Ball Coasters | Inspired by Charm

Continue working all the way around until your coaster is completely covered. For the last row, I had just enough space to glue each ball a little to the coaster and a little to the felt ball next to it. This made the cork coaster virtually disappear.

After everything is dry, your coasters are ready to use!

DIY Wool Felt Ball Coasters | Inspired by Charm

This is a super simple project, and I think the end product is really spectacular. The coasters are so unique and colorful, clearly a perfect addition to my space.

DIY Wool Felt Ball Coasters | Inspired by Charm

I also really love that they are customizable. The felt balls come in oodles of colors you could do varied shades of blue or a more neutral pallet with grays and whites. Either way, you will have a cozy spot for your favorite beverage.

How do you like my colorful coasters?

Well, I did it. A Year of Pie has officially begun and I’m officially obsessed. I want to make pies all day, every day. Despite being a little nervous since it was my first attempt at pie baking, I found the whole process very soothing and cathartic. You know … like the scene from Bridesmaids when Kristin Wiig’s character makes the cupcake. Something like that.

As you can tell from the title of this post, I decided to start with a pretty traditional pie – apple.

Apple Pie with All-Butter Crust | Inspired by Charm #ayearofpie

Surprisingly, apple pie isn’t among my favorites. However, a warm slice with a giant scoop of vanilla ice cream is not something I would turn down.

Apple Pie with All-Butter Crust | Inspired by Charm #ayearofpie

Apple Pie with All-Butter Crust | Inspired by Charm #ayearofpie

I originally intended to make this a caramel apple pie. Basically, that would involve topping the apples with caramel sauce before adding the top crust. However, I got so excited when placing on the top crust that I completely forgot about the caramel. These things happen.

Apple Pie with All-Butter Crust | Inspired by Charm #ayearofpie

Apple Pie with All-Butter Crust | Inspired by Charm #ayearofpie

While my mom has a fabulous pie crust recipe, I have decided to try a few others before tackling the family favorite. To make this pie I ended up two different recipes. For the crust, I used the All-Butter Crust recipe from The Four and Twenty Blackbirds Pie Book. For the pie filling, I used the recipe from Honeysuckle Catering. She recently did two YouTube videos with Margo True of Sunset Magazine showiing how to make pie dough and apple pie. After watching both of those videos, I was a little more confident about tackling this recipe. Be sure to check them out.

Apple Pie with All-Butter Crust | Inspired by Charm #ayearofpie

Throughout this year I plan to experiment with different pie dough recipes until I find the one I like best. However, I do realize that pie dough is kind of a personal thing and people have their favorites. Be it thin, thick, flaky, buttery, etc. – I recommend testing different recipes to find your own preferred variety. Kind of like what I’m doing.

Apple Pie with All-Butter Crust | Inspired by Charm #ayearofpie

And, since I am documenting this for my own reference, I will leave a few notes at the end of the post detailing my thoughts about flavors, etc. So if you are curious about my personal taste notes, you can find those there.

Apple Pie with All-Butter Crust | Inspired by Charm #ayearofpie

Apple Pie with All-Butter Crust

Here’s what you will need:

All-Butter Crust

2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon sugar
1 teaspoon kosher salt
1/2 pound (2 sticks) cold unsalted butter, cut into 1/2-inch pieces
1 cup cold water
1/4 cup cider vinegar
1 cup ice

Apple Filling

3 1/2 pounds apples (6 large or 7 medium), peeled and sliced (1/8th inch thick) I used a mix of Granny Smith and Honey Crisp
3/4 cup sugar
2 tablespoons of flour
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon allspice
1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
2 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into thin slices
1/4 cup milk and sanding sugar for garnish

Let’s get baking:

In a large bowl, sift together the flour, salt, and sugar. Then add the cold butter pieces. Use a spatula to coat the butter with the flour mixture. With a pastry blender, cut the butter into the flour mixture until the butter is in pea-sized pieces. Be careful not to over mix.

Then in a small bowl combine the water, ice, and cider vinegar. Sprinkle about 4 tablespoons of the ice water mixture over the flour and butter mixture and incorporate with a spatula. Continue to add more of the ice water mixture, 1 to 2 tablespoons at a time, using the spatula and / or your hand until the dough comes together into a ball. If necessary, add small drops of the water mixture to any remaining dry bits.

Split the dough in half and shape each piece into a flat disk. Wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least an hour. (This dough can be refrigerated for 3 days or frozen for 1 month.)

Next, we want to make our apple filling.

Place your peeled and sliced apples in a large bowl. In a medium-sized bow whisk together sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, and salt. Sprinkle this mixture over the apples and mix with your hands or a large spoon to combine. Add the lemon juice and mix again.

Remove your chilled dough from the fridge. Roll out the dough on a lightly floured work surface. (To make this process a bit easier, I rolled mine out between two sheets of waxed paper.) Roll out the dough to 1/8 inch thickness. The dough should be two inches wider in circumference than the size of your pie pan. Use the wax paper or your hands to transfer the dough to your pie pan. Trim the dough leaving about 1/2 inch overhang. Chill the bottom crust while you roll out the top.

Now, preheat your oven to 450 degrees F. Position your two oven racks on the two lowest levels. On the bottom rack, place a cooke sheet to catch any drips from your pie.

Next, pour your prepared apples into the pie shell. Then, scatter the thinly sliced butter on the top. Next, add the top crust to your pie. I decided to try a lattice top. Instead of explaining how to do that here, check out this awesome tutorial via YouTube.

For a standard top crust, carefully center it on your filled pie. Fold the edge of your top crust over the edge of the bottom crust so it’s flush with the pan. Crimp the edge to seal with your fingers or a fork.

Slash a few decorative steam vents in the top crust. Brush the top crust with milk and sprinkle with sanding sugar.

Set the pie onto the second to lowest rack in your oven. Bake at 450 degrees F for 20 minutes, then reduce the heat to 350 degrees F. Bake until the pie is a medium golden brown. You can test the doneness of your apples by sticking a knife into a vent hold. They should feel tender. Let the pie cool at least an hour before serving.

And that my friends is one awesomely delicious pie.

Apple Pie with All-Butter Crust | Inspired by Charm #ayearofpie

Served with a heaping scoop of vanilla bean ice cream, this really is perfection.

I’ve never knowingly had a crust with cider vinegar in it. It does add a really unique and tangy flavor. I liked it! However, I will cut back a bit on the amount next time I make this crust. Maybe 1/6th of a cup instead of 1/4th. With that being said though, this dough is bananas! (Bananas = super good). It’s flaky, flavorful, thick, and all around wonderful. I could have just eaten the dough with the ice cream.

Apple Pie with All-Butter Crust | Inspired by Charm #ayearofpie

My apples were still a little crisp, so I assume I didn’t cut them quite thin enough or didn’t bake it long enough. It wasn’t enough to bother me, but something I’ll keep in mind next time. My mom also suggested a different apple. She prefers Cortland.

Apple Pie with All-Butter Crust | Inspired by Charm #ayearofpie

My pie also had a fair amount of liquid. I did cut into it a little bitter sooner than I should have. (I was in a bit of a hurry as the sun was setting and I needed to photograph this bad boy. (You may be surprised to learn that I took most of the cut pie pictures in an almost completely dark kitchen. The magic of a good camera and a tripod!) As the pie continued to set, I noticed things thickened up. So, a lesson to you – patience is a virtue. Also, the Four & Twenty Blackbirds Pie Book talked a little bit about using apples in pies. Apparently, there is a way to release some the the liquid in the apples before baking. I may also give that a try next time around.

With all that being said though, the flavors of the pie were still wonderfully delicious and enjoyable. I’m calling this pie a winner!

Apple Pie with All-Butter Crust | Inspired by Charm #ayearofpie

For not being a big Apple Pie fan, I was really pleased with my first attempt at pie. Not only did it turn out beautifully, but it tasted equally delicious.

One down, many more to go! What type of pie would you like to see me tackle next?

Rum Punch Recipe:

I had every intention of having my list of 2014 goals / resolutions ready for today. However, it just didn’t happen.

I have a pretty good list going, but I don’t think it’s something I want to rush. So, instead of sharing my goals with you today, I thought we could do a cocktail recipe for this Rum Punch.  Kind of the same thing, eh?

One sip of this Rum Punch and you'll be transport to tropical paradise! #rum #punch #cocktail #recipe

Last year around this time I was preparing to head off on my first cruise. Remembering that fun time with my friends, I thought today’s cocktail could double as a little #FlashbackFriday.

And since there are no cruises for me in the near future, I figured a boy could dream and savor the flavors of a fabulous Caribbean vacation. Right?

Rum Punch | Inspired by Charm #DrinksandLinks

Today I’m showing you how to make a classic Rum Punch. It’s a fairly basic drink, but the flavors have a somewhat magical power that instantly transports you to a tropical island where the sun in shining, the water is crystal clear, and the drinks are flowing.

After temperatures in the negatives this week, I think a little sunshine in a glass would be most welcome.

Rum Punch | Inspired by Charm #DrinksandLinks

What is in Rum Punch?

As you can imagine there are many different rum punch recipes. However, I found that must rum punches include:

  • pineapple juice
  • orange juice
  • grenadine
  • rum (obviously!)

For my recipe, I used two different rums: dark rum and coconut rum. I feel the addition of coconut rum really gives it that tropical beachy flavor!

Beyond the flavor, one of my favorite things about this cocktail is the happiness-inducing color.

Rum Punch | Inspired by Charm #DrinksandLinks

The ombre effect comes from the grenadine which sinks to the bottom and a little bit of dark rum which floats on the top. Isn’t it beautiful?

Let’s mix one up.

Although this Rum Punch looks gorgeous, I like to give it a little stir to get everything all mixed up before sipping the day way.

You may remember that over a year ago I started a gallery wall in my downstairs hallway. Well, just before Christmas, I finally managed to finish it.

My Completed Gallery Wall | Inspired by Charm

I really wish I could explain why it took me so long to complete it, but honestly I have no excuse. It’s quite possible that this is the project I’ve procrastinated the most on. But at this point, that’s neither here nor there.

Given the fact that it’s taken me so LONG, I don’t have a list of sources for the prints. I’ve collected some from various trips, Etsy, and Society6. If you see something you are DYING to know the source for, please let me know in the comments below and I’ll do my best to track it down for you.

My Completed Gallery Wall | Inspired by Charm

All the frames are from various places as well. Most came from Target, Walmart, or Ikea. However, a few were thrifted or custom. The custom ones were ordered from Frames By Mail. I also bought a few custom mats here.

My Completed Gallery Wall | Inspired by Charm

My favorite frame is this ornate one from Goodwill. It was gold to start, but a quick coat of white paint gave it a whole new life. I may incorporate a few more frames like this one if I happen upon them.

I also found a framed chalkboard (to the left of the door) and a chunky wood branch chalkboard pencil. It’s pretty sweet. This allows me to personalize my wall for the season or a special event.

I was actually able to complete this wall thanks to a few pictures I took on my trip to Portland. As much as I love being able to purchase prints, I really like to include some of my own work and photographs.

I also tucked in a few favorite pictures of family and friends.

Ingredients

Instructions

  • Begin by preheating your oven to 350 degrees F.
  • Then in a bowl, mix together the flour, baking soda, and salt. Set this aside.
  • With a mixer on medium speed, cream together the butter, peanut butter, sugar, and brown sugar until light and fluffy. This should take about 4-5 minutes. Then add the egg and vanilla. Mix to combine. Reduce the mixer speed to low and add the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.
  • Shape the dough into 1-inch balls and place in cups of a miniature muffin pan.
  • Bake for 8 to 10 minutes, or until the cookies are lightly brown and still puffy. Remove from the oven and press a peanut butter cup in the middle of each cookie. Once the chocolate starts to melt on the top, add a pinch of sprinkles. Cool for about 10 minutes before removing from the pans; then allow the chocolate to firm up completely.

Don’t get my wrong here, I love my job – probably more then any other job I’ve had in my life. Even though I often find it hard to explain what I do, I always tell people it’s the best job ever. I’ve been a creative person for as long as I can remember. In fact, I think we are all pretty darn creative – some of us just choose to make a career out of those skills. However, there are days when my creativity and inspiration are nowhere to be found. Today was one of those days. This time of year my to-do list seems never ending, yet there are times I just can’t seem to get a darn thing done. Whether my brain is focused on something else or I’m just a ball of tired, unmotivated weirdness, all I can accomplish is eating every last thing in my fridge and watching Ellen videos on YouTube. (Yes, this has happened on one too many occasions.)

While highly entertaining, watching Ellen isn’t going to get my work done. Plus, being a one-man-show, all that work will be sitting there waiting for me the next day.

Since being creative is a huge part of what I do, I decided to come up with five tips for finding creativity during the day. This way when I’m having one of those “ball-of-tired-unmotivated-weirdness” kind of days, I’ll have at least something to turn to in order to get my creative juices flowing again.

1. Gather, even when you’re not looking.
I’ve found that when I’m trying to come up with a project or idea it’s usually not going to happen in that moment. So I’ve started to gather inspiration everywhere, even when I’m not looking for it.

Thankfully I usually have my phone on me when I’m out and about so snapping pictures is a piece of cake. To take this a step further, when I find something that really inspires me or relates to a project I’m working on, I actually print the picture. That way my inspiration doesn’t get lost among the thousands of picture on my phone. It’s right there at my fingertips.

2. Create an inspiration board
Now, what do you do with all of those pictures? Recently I created a bulletin board for my office. With the evolution of Pinterest I’ve changed how and where I keep things that inspire me. Having a dedicated space in my office to pin up pictures, fabric swatches, or magazine tear sheets gives me a place to go to (other than the Internet) when I need a creativity infusion.

3. Get off the Internet.
Speaking of the Internet … Clearly, I am smitten with Pinterest. I also love the blogs I follow, and I may or may not have an unhealthy interest in Ellen videos. Nothing is more inspiring, however, than getting off the computer. Whether I’m at an antique store, taking a walk, or hanging out with my friends, that’s where I’m most likely to find my best and most creative ideas.

4. Try working on something else.
This is key for me. There are days when I am so bogged down by one project or trying to think of an idea for another project that I literally can’t focus on anything else. Huge workflow killer. When this happens, I usually end up getting nothing accomplished. I know it’s kind of basic, but lately I’ve been trying to force myself to work on something else. Even if there is a deadline at stake, sometimes it’s best to just walk away from something for an hour and focus on something else like emptying the dishwasher or organizing a drawer. This way, I’m killing two birds with one stone, I’m staying productive and it give my brain a break to restart my creativity.

5. Clear the clutter.
As you know, I’m in the process of creating a workspace for myself. This has been one of the greatest tools in helping my creative side. Before, supplies and props were scattered wherever I could squeeze them in. Now, I have a dedicated place for props. Eventually, each piece of furniture will house specific things. Basically, everything will be in its place. So, when creativity does strike it won’t be put on hold while I go searching for the right cake stand or that red striped washi tape.

This goes for paperwork and images as well. Instead of having loose paperwork everywhere, I’ve been using my printer to scan important documents and neatly file them on my computer.

I even started scanning tear sheets from magazines and catalogs that have inspiration for future projects. Then, instead of trying to remember which magazine or catalog that really cool idea was in, I can just find the image that I scanned in the “Really Cool Ideas” folder on my desktop. Pretty ingenious, right?

While there are many ways to hone your creativity and stay productive, these are just five things that have been working for me. What do you do to enhance your creativity?

Don’t get my wrong here, I love my job – probably more then any other job I’ve had in my life. Even though I often find it hard to explain what I do, I always tell people it’s the best job ever. I’ve been a creative person for as long as I can remember. In […]
