You know that I love me a good DIY candlestick. In the past, I’ve made colorblock wood candlesticks, multiple taper holder candlesticks, and paint-dipped brass candlesticks. Well, I’m back with another do-it-yourself candlestick! Can you handle it?

This month those of us on the Lowe’s Creative Blogger Team were challenged to create some Halloween decor. Since I like to keep things stylish, and candles are a must for Halloween decorating, I thought this idea for DIY Copper and Wood Candlesticks would be perfect!

I wish I was the genius behind this concept, but I’ve seen several variations of it online. I thought the candlesticks were wonderful so I decided to make them on my own.

Plus, with my newfound love for copper, I was excited to incorporate a bit of its metallic sheen in my home. Yes, friends. I’m taking a break from brass today.

Anyway, these candlesticks basically come together with wood dowels and copper pipe fittings. That’s it. It’s kind of like constructing something with Lincoln Logs or Tinker Toys. The shape and style are totally up to you.

Now I’m going to show you how I created mine. I made three different candlesticks. You’ll need the same supplies for each. I’ve listed the exact copper fittings and lengths of the wood pieces to make things a bit easier for you. But don’t feel compelled to follow my designs exactly. Mix it up and try some of your own.

DIY Copper and Wood Candlesticks

Here’s what you will need:
wood dowels* – 7/8 inch
copper fittings* – 7/8 inch openings (elbows, Ts, and female adapters)
circular saw
ruler and pencil
sandpaper
hammer
glue (optional)

*The dowels and copper fittings come in a variety of sizes. When you’re at Lowe’s picking up your supplies, just make sure the dowels fit snugly into the fittings. I brought a taper candle with me to the store to make sure that it would fit as well.

Begin by cleaning your copper fittings. Remove labels, give them a good scrub, and, if you want them to shine, polish them. That’s what I did with mine. It takes a little extra time, but it’s worth it. Polish them just like would with brass. (I have a tutorial on that here.) One round of cleaning and polishing will do the trick.

Next, you’ll want to cut the dowels to length. You can figure out a plan for how you want your candlesticks to look or follow the guide below that gives the measurements I used.

Once your dowels are cut, sand any rough edges.

Then, start assembling. My cut dowels fit tightly into my copper fittings. So much so that I need to use a hammer at times. I didn’t find it necessary to use glue, However, if your fittings are looser, add a bit of E6000 glue to hold everything in place.

Play with the fittings and the wood until everything is even and level.

And that’s it! Your candlesticks are complete.

I decided to leave my wood natural. However, you could paint the dowels to match your decor. I think black would look really chic. In fact, I may even try that down the road. Alternatively, you could even stain the wood.

I’m hoping that one or two of these candlesticks make it into my bedroom transformation, but at this point I’ve placed them around my house to show you how fabulous they can look in your home.

I thought this one with a black candle looked great next to my Succulent Pumpkin Planter (which is still doing and looking fabulous a week later!).

As you can see, using different fittings and lengths of wood allows you to come up with some really unique designs.

Basement Stairwell Transformation | Inspired by charm

I finally managed to get together the finishing touches for the basement stairwell. It’s safe to say it’s finished. (Well, as finished as it’s going to get for now. Nothing is ever truly finished around here.) Remember where I started? So, I thought I’d give you a peek at how the it looks.

Bam! Cute, right? Everything turned out better than I imagined. I’m so pleased with the results. (If you’re looking for paint color information, check out that post here.)

First, let’s talk about the light fixture. Isn’t it, amazing?

Since this space isn’t very big, I decided to splurge a bit on the few pieces that would fill it. The fixture is the Orbit Wall Sconce from School House Electric. It’s magical, and I’m so happy I bought it. It comes in a bunch of finishes, but I think this one is right for this small area. It’s a mix of black, silver, and brass. Hard to go wrong.

While it was on the expensive side, I think the light totally helped bring the space together. And to be honest, I don’t mind putting money into light fixtures. They’re both functional and decorative.

Moving on to the art.

Again, another win for the space. This art is from Eoin O Connor. I first saw his work when I went to Ireland this past summer. He is from Ireland. I instantly fell in love with the bright colors and quirky images. When I was considering what to put on the wall, I thought the color would be just the thing. Plus, it gives me a good laugh every time I come up the stairs.

Since the art was an odd size, I ordered some frames and mats via Frames by Mail. I’ve used them for years. (In fact, a lot of the frames in my gallery wall are from there.) They usually have some sale or discount happening, too.

I opted for a thin gold frame and a white mat which works well with the light fixture.

You can see that I added a few small purple jars on the shelf for a little more color and visual interest. I really want to keep this area simple, and they added just the oomph I wanted.

On the opposite wall, I hung a large wicker tray that I picked up earlier this year from Target. I actually had no place to store it, so it ended up here by accident. However, I think it works nicely in the space. A little greenery and another jar brighten things up on the ledge.

For the floor, I found the perfect small carpet at HomeGoods. I considered putting a runner on the stairs, but I’m shying away from that for the moment. I think a small rug in the landing area is fine for now.

Succulent Pumpkin Planter | Inspired by Charm

Hey there, friends! Happy Monday. I hope you had a fabulous weekend and are doing well.

It’s been a few years since I carved a pumpkin. Probably seven years to be precise. So when a blogger friend asked me to participate in Clinton Kelly’s 30-Minute Pumpkin Challenge I was a little nervous. I didn’t have much time which made me a tad worried about coming up with an idea. People have done literally EVERYTHING imaginable with a pumpkin. Just search Pinterest. It’s insane.

Fortunately, the idea of planting succulents in a pumpkin to create a Succulent Pumpkin Planter came to mind. I thought this was an original idea, so I went with it. Later I discovered that it’s been done. I should have guessed. ANYWAY, new idea or not, I think the planter turned out amazingly cute and has just the right amount of spooky.

Now, before we get started, I must mention that as soon as you cut into a pumpkin, there’s clearly a limited amount of time you have to decorate with it. After about a week, it’s going to rot. You’ll want to keep that in mind. As cute as this is, it’s obviously most ideal for a Halloween party, a spooktackular weekend celebration, or something like that. However, you will see in my tutorial that I considered this, so it can be disassembled as quickly as it comes together.

At any rate, it’s totally worth it.

Okay, ready? Let’s do it.

How to make a Succulent Pumpkin Planter:

You will need:
Pumpkin (I really like the Cinderella type, but any variety will work.)
plastic bowl or container that will fit inside the pumpkin
succulents
reindeer moss
plastic spiders
sharp knife
glue (I used a hot glue gun.)

Begin by cutting a hole into the top of your pumpkin. Make it wide enough so you can fit a lot of succulents inside. (Yes, the inside of a green pumpkin is orange too. I don’t know. This really surprised me for reason.)

Then, if necessary, insert a bowl or plastic container upside down into the pumpkin. This will give your plants a stable place to sit.

Start inserting your succulents. Keep your succulents in the plastic pots they came in. This will allow you to take the pumpkin planter apart because, as I mentioned above, the pumpkin will soon start to rot. After you disassemble your planter, you can then use your succulents somewhere else.

Tuck the potted succulents in really close to one another. The plastic pots bend easily so this is simple to do.

After all of your plants are in place, place some reindeer moss (I bought a big pack from Amazon a while back.) around the plants to hide the dirt and pots.

Your planter is now complete if you prefer a traditional look.

However if you’d like, you can add a little spookiness to your pumpkin. That’s what I did. Just hot glue a couple glittery black spiders (purchased at Walmart) to the side of the pumpkin.

Once I placed the pumpkin on my table, I added a few more spiders to make it look as if they were crawling toward and up into the pumpkin.

And that’s it! A Succulent Pumpkin Planter!

I wish this could last forever and ever.

However if you’d like, you could use a realistic-looking funkin and essentially keep your planter all season long.

As much as I love this pumpkin without the spiders, I like it even more with them. I’m not super into Halloween, but if I was, this would be my kind of decorating. Beautiful, but slightly unexpected and eerie.

I hope you’ve had a spectacular week. It’s been a busy one here on IBC so I’m happy Friday is here. And since it is Friday, let’s talk about today’s cocktail for a minute.

First, if you can believe it, until about two weeks ago I’d never had gin. Never. It turns out I like it. Also, I didn’t know what kind of gin to buy for this drink, but had heard fabulous things about Aviation so that’s what I went with.

Second, today’s cocktail is straight from the September issue of BHG. When I first leafed through that issue I remember thinking, “Hmmm, that Blackberry Gin Lemonade looks awesome. I think this should be how I try gin.” Flash forward to mid-September at the event in NYC. It was the featured cocktail. Bananas!

Anyway, I’m not sure if it’s the cocktail or the gin, but it was pretty darn tasty. So, I decided to give it a try at home, and it turned out just wonderful.

Now, if you’re not a drinker, no problem. This cocktail recipe starts off with a homemade Blackberry Lemonade which is killer. Just add the sparkling water and leave out the gin and you’re good to go. If you don’t like gin, substitute vodka.

I decided to garnish my cocktail with rosemary because I think it looks cute and goes so well with this flavor combination. And, naturally, I threw in a few birch bark-inspired paper straws to bring it on home!

Perfect. Let’s stir one up.

Blackberry Gin Lemonade

Here's what you will need:
For the lemonade ...
2 cups blackberries (I used frozen.)
1 cup water
1 cup sugar
1/4 cup honey
1 cup water
3/4 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice (about 4 - 5 lemons)

For the cocktail ...
1/2 cup sparkling water, chilled
1/2 cup gin
Ice
Fresh blackberries and rosemary sprigs for garnish

Begin by preparing the blackberry lemonade. In a small sauce pan, combine the blackberries, water, and sugar. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Stir to dissolve the sugar. Once boiling, reduce the heat to a simmer. Continue to heat, stirring occasionally, until the berries have softened. Remove the blackberry syrup from the heat and stir in the honey until it dissolves. Allow to cool slightly. Then, pour and press the mixture through a mesh sieve. Add another cup of water and the lemon juice to the strained mixture. Stir well to combine.

Next, prepare your cocktails. In a large pitcher, combine the blackberry lemonade, sparkling water, and gin. Serve in a a glass filled with ice. Garnish with fresh blackberries and a sprig of rosemary.

Pumpkin Mac and Cheese with Bacon

As you well know, when fall arrives I’m pretty much obsessed with all things pumpkin. From actually eating and drinking pumpkin-flavored treats to scattering them around my house and yard (pumpkins, not pumpkin-flavored things), I literally can’t get enough.

When it comes to being in the kitchen, I often find myself baking. I can’t really explain it, but I’ve just always been drawn to baking more than cooking. This is probably apparent since most of the recipes I share here on IBC are baked goods (and appetizers – I do like my appetizers.)

So, I’m challenging myself to try a few more savory dishes. Since it’s fall and I’m going for savory, I figured a Pumpkin Mac and Cheese with Bacon would be the perfect compromise.

I know throwing pumpkin into the mix may seem a bit odd. However, it pairs well with the cheese and bacon. And, in all honestly, you can’t really taste it. I mean, you know it’s there so it makes it seem like this mac and cheese was created just for fall. It gives it this extra layer of cozy flavor. I like it!

For this recipe I’m using two different types of cheese. If you have been following my blog for a while, you might remember that last year I worked with Cracker Barrel cheese to create some posts here on IBC. I’m no longer working with them, but I always find myself going back to their cheese. It’s good stuff, people. Also, when cheese is such an important ingredient in a dish, I like to shred it fresh. In addition to the cheddar, I’m using this Dubliner cheese from Kerrygold. I recently sampled this cheese, and it’s now a favorite of mine. I suspected that it would go beautifully in this mac and cheese – and did it ever!

I also should point out that I bake my bacon. I line a sheet pan with aluminum foil, toss in a cooling rack and line the bacon up. It takes about 30 minutes in a 350 degree F oven. This is how I always cooked bacon when I ran my B&B. I like this method because the bacon cooks evenly, a lot of the grease drains away, and the bacon looks picture perfect when done.

With the cheese and the bacon ready and my pasta cooked, I prepared everything in this beautiful pumpkin cocotte from Staub. They actually sent it to me to try, and I was mega excited. This thing is gorgeous. I think it’s the nicest piece of cookware I own. Anyway, if I didn’t have to cook my pasta separately, this could all have been done in a single pan. Love that.

If you can believe it, this was my first time cooking mac and cheese from scratch. Oddly enough, I loved every second of it. The recipe came together quickly and easily.

The resulting dish is lovely and delicious. The cheese. The bacon. And pumpkiny undertones. Heavenly. Talk about a great meal or side for a cool fall night.

Pumpkin Mac and Cheese with Bacon

serves 8 to 1o as a side dish

Here's what you will need:
1 pound pasta (I used cavatappi.)
1 tablespoon olive oil (or bacon grease)
1 cup onion, chopped
1 clove garlic, minced
3 tablespoons butter
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
2 cups whole milk
1/2 teaspoon onion powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
pinch of nutmeg
1 cup pumpkin puree
3 cups freshly shredded cheese (I used a combination of sharp cheddar cheese and Dubliner.)
8 strips thick cut bacon, cooked
1/4 cup panko bread crumbs

Begin by cooking your pasta according to the package directions. I like mine al dente. Strain the water from the cooked pasta and set the pasta aside.

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F.

In a medium or large oven-safe Dutch oven, add a thin layer of olive oil (or bacon grease). Then add your onions and sauté they until they start to golden. Ttoss in your garlic and cook for another minute.

Next, melt your butter with the onion and garlic. When melted, slowly whisk in the flour. Continue cooking and whisking for a minute.

Slowly mix the milk into the mixture until smooth. Continue to cook the mixture while stirring frequently until it bubbles and thickens. At this point, reduce the heat to low.

Stir in the onion powder, salt, pepper, nutmeg, and pumpkin puree until smooth. Then add your shredded cheese. (I like to reserve a handful of cheese to top off the dish.) Whisk the cheese cause until melted and smooth.

Remove from heat, add your cooked pasta, and stir. Then, add your bacon and stir.

Sprinkle the panko crumbs over top. Then top with the reserved (or extra) cheese.

Cover with a lid and bake for about 20 minutes until the cheese is melted and bubbling.

Wow. As much as I LOVE Fall Cookie Week (and I hope you do as well), it has put me a bit behind in keeping you up to date with what’s been happening around here. Even though I’ve spent a good deal of time in the kitchen lately, there have been other events that I’m excited to tell you about.

Almost two weeks ago, I hopped in my car and drove to New York City, which is about 4.5 hours from my house. It’s not a terrible drive, until you go through the Lincoln Tunnel and have to actually drive in the city. Now that, my friends, is scary. Of course, it was totally worth it because I absolutely love visiting NYC, and it had been almost a year since I was last there.

The reason for my trip was the Annual BHG Stylemaker Event! If you’ve been counting, you know that this was the third one I’ve had the privilege to attend. Two years ago is when I actually met all of the amazing folks from BHG for the first time, and it’s been a beautiful relationship ever since. Although visiting the city is expensive, it’s one event I wouldn’t miss.

As always, I got to chat and hang out with some of my favorite people, including bloggers who I’ve admired for years that have now become friends. This ultimately is the highlight of the trip. While I’m so grateful to live where I do, it’s not easy to find like-minded folks with whom I can talk shop. Connecting with other bloggers allows me to learn so much, helps me stay current, and ultimately be inspired to continue on this sometimes-crazy path.

BHG invited Nate to host the Stylemaker Panel. (You can check out all of the Stylemakers in the BHG September issue). He obviously (and unintentionally) stole the show. He is as kind and genuine in real life as he is on TV. Since I had the opportunity to work with Nate earlier this year, I made it a point to introduce myself. He even remembered who I was and mentioned that he read the post I created as part of our collaboration. It was nothing short of amazing and a memory that I will hold near and dear forever.

So, as fabulous as my trip was, my time in NYC was very brief because I needed to get back home and back to work. I was only able to spend a few short hours soaking up the ambiance of the city.

Now, I could go on and on about the event, but I’m not going to do that because it would not be very beneficial to you. Instead, I created a quick list of some of my favorite places to visit if you find yourself spending a day in NYC. I’m not a travel blogger so this isn’t a definitive guide to the city. It’s just a quick rundown of things that I highly recommend doing when you get a chance to visit.

Levain Bakery – seriously, the best chocolate chip cookie you will ever eat.

The High Line – a beautiful 1.45 mile-long park built on an abandoned portionof the New York Central Railroad. It’s packed with lush gardens and places to stop and visit along the way.

A Broadway Show – if I could see a Broadway show every time I visit, I definitely would. It’s an experience unlike any other. Wicked is easily my favorite.

Central Park – for a more relaxing day in the city, take a walk through this amazing park tucked in the heart of Manhattan.

SoHo – the best shopping in the city.

ABC Home and Fishes Eddy – located across the street from one another; this is a mecca for home decor enthusiasts.

Rockefeller Center – when I’m walking in the city I always find myself here. I’m not sure why I love it so much, but it just “feels” like NYC. Plus, Anthropologie and Magnolia Bakery are nearby.

I hope to return to the Big Apple in the future, so feel free to make this list even more useful by adding your favorite NYC locations and hot spots in the comments. I’d also love to read your recommendations and why you love NYC.

White Chocolate-Dipped Soft-Batch Butterscotch Cookies

Well friends, this is the last day of Fall Cookie Week. Not to give myself a pat on the back, but I think this was probably the best FCW yet. It’s so interesting to look back at the photos, styling, and recipes of the past years to see how it’s grown and improved. I hope you are feeling the same and have really enjoyed this year’s FCW.

I’ve gone back through each post from this week and added in every cookie link to the bottom. That way, if you’re ever looking for them, you can easily find them.

Okay. On to the final recipe.

Ever since I was a child, I have loved butterscotch. I know, it’s a weird thing for a kid to like, but it was (and still is) one of my favorite flavors. Anytime we’d go to the Dairy Queen, I’d get my cone or dilly bar dipped in butterscotch. Yum!

Because of this flavor crush, I decided to include a butterscotch recipe in FCW. I was inspired by this recipe from Sally’s Baking Addiction. I obviously gave it a few tweaks and created these White Chocolate-Dipped Soft-Baked Butterscotch Cookies. (How’s that for the longest cookie name ever!?) Don’t worry, this recipe deserves it!

I was a little hesitant to try the recipe, but I’m so glad that I did. They are easily one of my new favorites, and this dough will be a go-to for years to come. These cookies are so soft and the flavor is on point.

Just as I finished these, my brother stopped by my house. After sampling them, he raved about how good they are. He can be a bit particular about food, so this was a huge compliment and a testament to their deliciousness.

While these cookies are good enough alone, I decided to step it up a notch and dip half of the cookie in white chocolate. It’s a simple step that doesn’t take too much time, but adds another layer of flavor and interest to an already wonderful cookie.

White Chocolate-Dipped Soft-Baked Butterscotch Cookies

Here's what you will need:
2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 1/2 teaspoon cornstarch
1/2 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
3/4 cup light brown sugar
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1 large egg + 1 egg yolk
2 teaspoons vanilla
1 1/2 cups butterscotch chips (plus a handful to garnish)

1 bag (11 ounces) white chocolate chips (I used Ghirardelli.)
1 tablespoon vegetable shortening

In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, cornstarch and salt. Set aside.

Then, in a medium-sized bowl, combine the melted butter and sugars until no lumps remain. Then mix in the egg and egg yolk. Finally, whisk in the vanilla. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry and mix well with a spatula. Finally, fold in the butterscotch chips. Cover the dough and chill for at least two hours. (Do not skip the chilling.)

When the dough has cooled, remove it from the refrigerator. Then preheat your oven to 325 degrees F.

Roll about 2 tablespoons of the dough into a ball. Roll the balls so that they are taller, instead of wider. This will ensure that the cookies bake up thick. Place the balls on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or a silicone mat. Add some of your reserved butterscotch chips to the top of each dough ball for looks, if desired. Bake the cookies for 12 - 14 minutes. The cookies may seem soft or underbaked; however they will continue to bake on the cookie sheet. Allow to cool on the cookie sheet for about 10 minutes. Then move them to a wire rick to cool completely.

Once cooled, prepare your white chocolate dip. In a double boiler (a microwave will work as well, melt your chips along with 1 tablespoon of vegetable shorting. Make sure all of the chips have melted and the chocolate is smooth. Dip half of each cookie into the chocolate; then place on wax paper until the chocolate cools and firms.

I absolutely adore coconut, so I really love these cookies. I also can’t get over how wonderfully the salt and caramel work together. If you’ve never experienced this combination, you must give it a try.

I know it sounds weird, but it’s like a little flavor party for your mouth.

I thought about dipping half of each cookie into melted chocolate, but I resisted.If you decide to give that a try, I think it would totally take these cookies to the next level. Give me a shout out if you do.

These Salted Carmel Coconut Thumbprint Cookies are a modern twist on a classic cookie recipe that makes them perfect for the fall!

Ingredients

Instructions

  • Begin by preheating your oven to 350 degrees F.
  • In a large bowl, beat together your butter and sugar with a mixer on medium speed until light and fluffy (about 3 minutes); then beat in the vanilla and salt. With the mixer on low, gradually add the flour and beat until just combined.
  • Roll the dough with your hands into 1-inch balls.
  • Then, in one small bowl place your lightly beaten eggs. In another small bowl, place your coconut. Dip each ball first in the egg, then roll in the coconut.
  • Place balls on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Press an indentation into each ball with your thumb, finger, or back of a wooden spoon. Bake for 10 minutes. Remove the cookies from the oven and re-press the indentations. (Use caution since the cookies are hot.) Place the cookies back in the oven for an additional 10 minutes or until the cookies and coconut are golden.
  • Remove and let cool on a wire rack.
  • Now, place the unwrapped caramels and heavy cream in a sauce pan over low heat. Stir constantly until the caramels are melted and the mixture is smooth. Spoon the caramel sauce into the cookie indentations. Then, sprinkle with sea salt.

Buckeye Brownie Cookies

Even though I shared a chocolate and peanut butter cookie recipe on Monday. I thought that another one really couldn’t hurt. The way I look at it, the more the merrier. Peanut butter and chocolate are such a winning flavor combination.

Like the first recipe I baked, this cookie is actually created with a box cake mix. Well, in this case, a brownie mix. As much as I love making cookies from scratch, I’m all for the convenience of using a mix. Maybe not for every cookie, but it really does make the process much easier. Plus, if the end result is as delicious as these Buckeye Brownie Cookies, who cares.

In case you are not familiar with what a buckeye is, it’s basically like a peanut butter cup. A ball of sweetened peanut butter is dipped in chocolate. Buckeyes on their own are delicious, so putting them on top of a brownie cookie only make them that much better. (Throw some vanilla ice cream into this mix and I’m in dessert heaven.)

Buckeye Brownie Cookies

Here's what you will need:

1 cup powdered sugar
1 cup creamy peanut butter
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 box brownie mix
1/4 cup butter, melted
4 ounces cream cheese, softened
1 egg
4 ounces of chocolate (I prefer Ghiradelli's melting wafers.)

Begin by preheating your oven to 350 degrees F.

Then, in a medium-sized bowl, mix together the peanut butter, powdered sugar, and vanilla until completely combined. Roll into roughly 24 1-inch-diameter balls. Set aside.

In a large bowl mix together the brownie mix, butter, cream cheese, and egg.

Using a cookie scoop, scoop the batter onto a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper. Smooth the edges if necessary to form a round cookie.

Bake the cookies for 15 - 20 minutes.

After baking, immediately press one of the prepared peanut butter balls into the center of each cookie. Allow the cookies to cool on the pan for about 5 minutes. Then transfer them to a wire rack to finish cooling.

Once the cookies are cool, melt your chocolate in a double boiler (or in the microwave in a microwave safe bowl). Spoon melted chocolate over the top of each cookie. Allow the chocolate to set before serving.

Pumpkin Pecan Tassies

We’ve made it to the halfway point of Fall Cookie Week. Can you believe it? After today, there are only three more recipes. Do you have a favorite yet?

A while back I stumbled upon this recipe for Pumpkin Pecan Tassies over on BHG and immediately knew they had to be part of FCW. I love that they resemble mini pies. Given that this is also A Year of Pie on IBC, they just fit nicely into everything.

The only hesitation I had about making these was the pecan topping. Growing up, I wasn’t really a fan of nuts in or on food. So I have this subconscious fear that anything with nuts is going to be totally gross. However, as an adult my tastes have changed, and I honestly now enjoy pecans and many other kinds of nuts. I just need to break that weird mindset.

I’m happy to report that the pecan topping on these tassies is what really brings these cookies together.

If you love pumpkin pie, than you are totally going to love these. This cookie is like a bite-sized pumpkin pie with a sugary crunchy topping. Seriously, you can’t go wrong. I think these would be great to serve at a causal party. You can hold a glass of wine with one hand and pop these in your mouth with the other. That’s my kind of party!

Pumpkin Pecan Tassies

Here's what you will need:
1 package of prepared refrigerated pie crusts (2 crusts)
1 cup pumpkin
1/4 cup sugar
1/2 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/8 teaspoon salt
1 whole egg
1/4 cup half & half (or milk)

Pecan Topping:
1/3 cup pecans, chopped
1 tablespoon brown sugar
1 tablespoon butter, melted

Begin by preheating your oven to 350 degrees F.

Then, unroll your pie crusts. Use a 2 1/2 inch round cookie cutter (or the mouth of a drinking glass) and cut 12 rounds from each crust. Gently press the rounds into the ungreased cups of a mini muffin pan. Set aside.

In a large bowl, whisk together the pumpkin, sugar, spices, and salt. Next add your egg, then stir to combine. Slowly add your half & half, stirring once again until smooth.

In a small bowl, make your pecan topping by combining the pecans, brown sugar, and melted butter.

Using a spoon, add about 2 teaspoons of the pumpkin filling to each crust-lined cup. Then, top each with about 1 teaspoon of the pecan topping.

Bake for about 34 minutes or until the filling is set and the crust begins to brown. Allow the tassies to cool slightly before removing from the tin. Cool them completely on a wire rack.

Earlier this year, my friends and I took a trip to Vermont for another friend’s wedding. While we were there, I picked up a couple bottles of Vermont maple syrup. It’s the state’s specialty, so I figured it was a fitting thing to bring home.

One of those bottles has been staring at me every time I open my cupboard. I decided to finally crack it open for Fall Cookie Week and whip up a batch of these Maple Cream Cookies.

If you like things that are maple flavored, then you are going to love these cookies! Not only do the cookies exude maple goodness, but the flavor party continues in the maple buttercream icing that nicely holds the two cookies together.

The cookies end up being slightly crispy. Paired with the smooth buttercream, it’s a match made in heaven. Plus, who doesn’t love a sandwich cookie.

Maple Cream Sandwich Cookie

Maple Cream Cookie Recipe:

Maple Cream Sandwich Cookies

Here's what you will need:
2 1/3 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 cup unsalted butter, softened
1 cup sugar
1/2 cup dark brown sugar
1 large egg
2 teaspoons maple extract

Maple Buttercream:
1 cup unsalted butter, softened
3 cups powdered sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon maple extract
1/4 cup pure maple syrup

In a medium bowl, begin by whisking together your flour, baking powder and salt. Set aside. In a large bowl with an electric mixer (or stand mixer), beat the butter for about 30 seconds. Then add in the sugars and beat until fluffy, about 3-4 minutes. Add the egg and maple extract and continue to beat until combined.

Next, beat in the dry ingredients on low speed until just combined. Divide the dough into two balls, then flatten into a disk. Wrap each in plastic and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.

Once the dough is thoroughly chilled, preheat your oven to 350 degrees F. Line each baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat.

On a lightly floured surface, roll out the dough to about a 1/4-inch thickness. Use a cookie cutter to cut out cookies; then place on prepared baking sheets.

Bake cookies for about 8-10 minutes or until the edges just start to lightly brown. Transfer the cookies to a cutting board to cool.

In the meantime, mix up your maple buttercream. In a large bowl, beat butter with an electric mixer until smooth. Then, slowly begin to add powdered sugar, one cup at a time. Then add the salt, maple extract, and maple syrup. Beat until smooth.

Add buttercream to a piping bag (or plastic baggie with the tip of a corner cut off). Pipe the filling onto the backside of one cookie, then top with another. Repeat with the remaining cookies.

Frugal Fall Flowers

Ideas and tips for creating and styling beautiful frugal fall flower arrangements to decorate your home for fall.

I interrupt Fall Cookie Week for a very important message (Don’t worry, there’s still a cookie recipe for today. Click here.) Today, I’m taking a break from baking to share a quick and easy decorating idea. I teamed up with Laura of Finding Home and a few other fabulous ladies to share decor ideas throughout the year that can come together in less than 10 minutes. With crazy-busy schedules, it’s nice to have a few decorating ideas in your back pocket that you can throw together in a jiffy.

Frugal Fall Flower Arrangements:

Last week I shared my Fall Home Tour. (Thanks again for all of the love!) When you looked at the pictures of my house, you may have noticed that I have flowers scattered here and there. I’ve made it a habit to pick up a cheap bouquets of flowers at the store. Even though I live alone, there is something about having flowers around that makes me happy. And for a few bucks, I’m all in.

As you know, grocery store flowers can be a little boring. So today I wanted to show you how you can take a $5 pack of flowers and make wow-worthy arrangements for fall in just 10 minutes. Aka Frugal Fall Flowers.

Sound good? Let’s do it!

First, pick up some flowers at the store. I bought three different varieties just so I could show you more possibilities. All three of these together were still under $20. If you’re throwing a fall get-together, $20 isn’t too bad. As you’ll see, I was able to get five arrangements out of them.

Next, give these flowers a little love. Go ahead and quickly remove most of the leaves. And by most, I mean pretty much all of them. You can also remove any broken flower heads and pick off any petals that are brown, ripped, or otherwise damaged.

At this point, we need some fillers. Keep your pajamas on, put on your Crocs, grab a pair of scissors, and run around your yard collecting pretty leaves and flowers. (Your neighbors will think you have truly lost your mind. However, you’re the one who will have the pretty flowers. You win!)

While you’re collecting, remove any excess leaves so that the bulk of the foliage is toward the top of the stem.

Now, gather some containers from around your house and fill them with water. Think outside of the box. You don’t necessary need a flower vase. Use a mason jar, coffee cup, pottery, etc.

Then, start putting your arrangements together.

I really don’t know how to explain this part, but have fun with it. Play around with things until you like what you see. If it helps, use some of my examples for inspiration.

Fall Flower Arrangement:

A few tips:

  • Keep any leaves out of the water. They will turn yucky and your flowers won’t last as long.
  • If you’re having trouble deciding which flowers and foliage to use, stick with a similar color scheme and vary the shades.
  • Use different textures – some bigger leaves, some smaller leaves.
  • Try keeping things wispy. You can also keep things compact. Both work.
  • Do what you want. Some of you are going to love my creations; some of you aren’t. However, what matters is that I love them and they bring me joy. Same thing goes when you’re arranging your flowers.

Okay, let me show you what I came up with.

Something for the kitchen in one of my favorite mugs. Remember, things don’t have to be in-your-face-fall. A few red leaves sends that message.

Then, in the living room, I tucked a few flowers into a small Weck Jar to add some interest to my mantel.

And this arrangement on my coffee table happened by accident. The store was out of flowers, so I ended up picking all of these zinnias from my own yard at 11 o’clock at night (again in my pajamas and Crocs). The flowers totally work and were absolutely free!

Welcome back to Day 2 of Fall Cookie Week!

As you may have guessed from the title of this post, you’re not just getting a cookie recipe today. Because of this deliciously fun week, I thought it was only appropriate to have a little giveaway, too. Plus, it’s been ages since I’ve had a giveaway on IBC, so I figured it was about time.

First, let’s talk cookies. Then I’ll share the details of how you can win a KitchenAid Artisan Mixer.

Since fall is upon us and we are officially in Pumpkin-Flavored-Everything Season, I chose these Soft Pumpkin Sugar Cookies for today.

Nothing makes me happier than a soft sugar cookie with icing. Throw pumpkin into the mix and I’m in heaven. So, when I saw this recipe from Lauren’s Latest, I knew I had to give it a try with a few IBC tweaks.

This particular recipe is so simple to make. One thing to remember, though, is that you don’t want to over bake the cookies. Keeping these babies in the oven for just the right amount of time is the secret to their soft texture.

Also, as you might notice, there are several fall spices in these cookies. Make sure to include them all. As I discovered (and have mentioned here before) with pumpkin baking, you really need this blend of spices to get a vibrant pumpkin flavor. Trust me on this one.

Soft Pumpkin Sugar Cookies

Here's what you will need:
4 cups all purpose flour
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
1/2 cup butter, softened
1/2 cup vegetable oil
1 cup pumpkin puree
1 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup powdered sugar
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
2 large eggs

For the Glaze:
3 cups powdered sugar
4 tablespoons half & half (or milk)
1/2 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F.

In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, cream of tartar, salt, and spices; set aside. In another large bowl, beat together the butter, oil, pumpkin, sugars, vanilla, and eggs. Mix until smooth. Then, slowly mix in the dry ingredient until completely incorporated.

Using a 1 1/2 tablespoon scoop, place the dough onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper (or a silicone baking mat). Use a glass to flatten the dough to about 1/2 inch thick. (If the dough sticks, press the bottom of the class in granulated sugar before flattening the dough.) Bake for 8-9 minutes.

Once baked, transfer the cookies to a cutting board to cool.

While the cookies cool, prepare the glaze. Whisk together all of the ingredients until smooth. If your glaze is too thick, add more milk. If it's too thin, add more powdered sugar.

Once the cookies are cool, use a spoon and spread glaze over top of each cookie. Let the glaze harden before serving or packing away.

When it comes to baking, one of my favorite flavor combinations is chocolate and peanut butter. This recipe starts with a traditional peanut butter cookie dough. Then, a piece of Dove chocolate is added to each of the cookies as they come out of the oven.

Once the chocolate is nice and melted from the warmth of the cookie, you use a knife to spread the chocolate around. Then, festive fall / Halloween sprinkles are added for color and fun.

These cookies are so delicious and easy to make. If you’re doing any seasonal entertaining, they bring a nice touch of autumn to your table.

Let me teach you how to make them.

Peanut Butter Sprinkle Cookies

Here’s what you will need:
3 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup unsalted butter, softened
1 cup granulated sugar
1 cup brown sugar
1 cup smooth peanut butter
2 teaspoons vanilla
2 eggs
1/2 cup granulated sugar (for rolling the dough)
3 (10 oz) bags of Dove milk chocolate
Sprinkles in fall colors

Begin by preheating your oven to 375 degrees F.

Then, in a medium sized bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.

In a large bowl, beat your butter with a hand mixer for about 30 seconds. Then, add the sugar and brown sugar. Beat again for about 3 minutes. Next, add the peanut butter and vanilla. Beat until smooth. Finally, beat in each egg, one at a time.

Once combined, slowly add the dry ingredients and mix until just combined.

Roll the dough into 1-inch balls; then roll them in granulated sugar. Place evenly on a baking sheet. Bake for about 8 minutes or until the cookies just begin to lightly brown.

Remove from the cookie sheet and immediately press a chocolate into the center of each cookie. Wait a few minutes; then using a knife spread the chocolate. Top with sprinkles.

Spiced Apple Cake Cookie

Guess what’s back? Fall Cookie Week here on Inspired by Charm! It’s hard to believe that a year has passed and we are back for another round of deliciousness! Loosen up your pants, grab a glass of milk, and settle in!

As in the past (You can check out the First Year here and the Second Year here.), I’ll be sharing a new recipe each day this week. (Plus, I have a bonus recipe at the end of this post.) That makes a total of eight cookie recipes coming your way. Yum!

Like last year, there may also be a giveaway popping up one day this week. So stay tuned for that.

At the end of the week, I will recap the recipes so that you can easily find them in one place. Also, over the course of the week, I will continue to update each post, so each recipe will be linked up at the bottom of every page just in case you miss one or two.

So, with all that that covered, on to the baking!

This year, I’m kicking off Fall Cookie Week with these Spiced Apple Cake Cookies. I was inspired by this recipe from the fabulous Ali of Gimme Some Oven. I decided to give them a fall twist.

These cookies are actually made using two cake mixes. This was the first time I ever made a cookie with a cake mix, so I was excited to give it a try. For the recipe I used a spice cake mix and a caramel apple cake mix. The combination makes for a pretty tasty cookie. I love how the spices complement the apple.

Once the cookies were complete, I topped everything off with a caramel glaze. It tied all of the flavors together and gave the cookies a finishing detail that makes them look as beautiful as they taste.

These soft, flavor-packed cookies are a new favorite. And now I’m intrigued to try a few other cake mix-based cookies. The options are endless!

Spiced Apple Cake Cookies

1 (15.25 ounce) spice cake mix
1 (15.25 ounce) caramel apple cake mix
4 eggs (divided)
2/3 cup vegetable oil (divided)
1 cup powdered sugar

For the glaze:
1 1/4 cups powdered sugar
2 tablespoons caramel sauce
1 tablespoon milk

Begin by preheating your oven to 375 degrees F.

Then, prepare your two cakes mixes. In a large bowl pour in your spice cake mix. In another large bowl, pour in your caramel apple cake mix. To each cake mix, add 2 eggs and 1/3 cup vegetable oil. Mix until just blended. Cover both and refrigerate for about 30 minutes.

Add 1 cup of powdered sugar to a bowl; set aside.

Remove the bowls of batter from the refrigerator. Take about 2 teaspoons of spice batter and roll into a ball. (If the dough is sticky, just add a bit of powdered sugar to your hands to prevent it from sticking.) Repeat with the caramel apple batter. Then, gently roll the spice and apple dough balls together to make one large ball.

Carefully roll the dough ball into the prepared bowl of powdered sugar to coat. Place the dough balls on a baking sheet about 2 inches apart. Repeat with the remaining dough.

Bake for about 10 minutes or just until the cookies are slightly golden. Transfer to a wire rack to cool.

In the meantime, prepare your glaze. Whisk together the powdered sugar, milk, and caramel sauce. Add more milk to thin the glaze or more powdered sugar to thicken. You want a drizzling consistency. Then, put the glaze in a plastic baggie. Snip off a very small portion of one corner and drizzle glaze over your cooled cookies. (A piping bag can also be used or drizzle with a fork.)

Making cocktails in the fall has become one of my favorite things. Then again, to be honest, making any recipe in the fall is my favorite things. I just love all the flavors of the season.

This Caramel Apple Pie Martini is no exception. I was inspired to make this cocktail after making my Caramel Apple Martini. I love that recipe so much that I thought it could be equally delicious to make a creamy version. Spoiler alert: I was right!

Let me talk you through this a little bit, and then we will get to the recipe.

First, this is much more than a martini. It’s actually dessert in a glass (with alcohol of course). It’s like drinking a slice of fresh-baked apple pie with a big ol’ scoop of vanilla ice cream.

How to Make a Caramel Apple Pie Martini:

To start off, I rimmed the glass in caramel and then in crushed graham crackers. It adds such wonderful flavor and an unexpected crunch.

The other ingredients, while not bar staples, are totally awesome and I highly recommend adding them to your collection. Kissed Caramel Vodka is one of my favorites for this time of year. I especially love it in my aforementioned Caramel Apple Cider Martini.

Also, the Velvet Cinn Horchata is pure bliss. It brings great spice to creamy cocktails. In addition, I used Apple Pie Vodka. If you can’t find it, an apple vodka will work just as nicely.

Ingredients

  • 2 ounces apple pie vodka
  • 1 ounce kissed caramel vodka
  • 1 ounce Velvet Cinn Horchata
  • 1 ounce half & half
  • Caramel sauce and crushed graham crackers for garnish
  • sprinkle of cinnamon - optional

Instructions

  • Rim a martini glass with caramel sauce; then dip the glass in crushed graham crackers. Set aside.
  • In a cocktail shaker filled with ice, combine both vodkas, horchata, and half & half. 
  • Shake vigorously and pour into prepared martini glass. Add a sprinkle of cinnamon to the top.

Welcome back to my home, everyone! I’m so excited to invite you in for a fall look around. As some of you may remember, this past summer I did my first home tour on the blog. You were all so wonderfully kind and left the sweetest comments, so I’m thrilled to do this again.

In the kitchen, I added a few touches of fall here and there. You’ll notice that I got rid of the TV that hung on the wall. I rarely used the TV, and it didn’t do much for the space. Some new art has taken its place. I’m also still loving the pegboard I recently installed.

Hello, everyone! I hope you had a fabulous weekend. I feel like I say that every Monday (and I probably do), but I mean it.

I can’t believe we are already halfway through September. It feels like time just speeds up as the year progresses. Does it feel that way to you, too?

As I mentioned last week, I’m preparing for a fall home tour on Wednesday. This weekend I spent some time doing a bit of fall cleaning and decorating. One area I’ve been meaning to tackle for quite a while is the shelving in my office / living room. I styled the shelves some time back and have since let them collect dust. With a new season here, I thought I’d try something a bit different.

I began by clearing everything off and giving the shelves a good dusting. (The bookcases can be fond here.)

Much better! With that completed, I decided to organize my shelves by color. Each section would have a color focus. Extra shelves, would be white accessories and brass and gold would be accents to tie everything together. I began by placing a few items on each shelf to get an idea of where I wanted each color to go.

Once that was determined, I spent a good two hours styling my shelves and listening to music. As I explained last time I did a post like this, there are a few things I like to keep in mind when styling any space. Here’s a quick reminder:

Function – decide what you need this space to do.
Color – stay within your color palette.
Shapes – use a variety of shapes to create balance and add diversity.
Texture / Pattern – add various textures to create visual interest.
Spacing – leave some empty space (It’s the difference between collected and cluttered.)
Foliage – bring in flowers and plants to complete a space.
Sparkle – add something with a little bling – glass, metallic, mirrors, crystals, etc.
Personal – incorporate things that are meaningful and special to you.

I find that if I follow these tips, I’m much more likely to get a balanced and beautiful result. After lots of trial and error, my shelves had a fresh new look for fall.

I’m totally loving the color blocking. If you look closely, you’ll also notice another new addition to the space.

With fall on the brain and cooler temperatures sneaking in, I felt my thermostat deserved a stylish upgrade. When the folks at Honeywell contacted me to try out their new Lyric Thermostat, of course, I said, “Yes, please!”

With their app-based installation (no complex manuals) to follow, my Lyric was installed quicker than it took me to re-style my shelves.

I’m so glad I made the switch! My favorite feature is being able to control the Lyric from my phone or iPad. When I’m tucked into bed late at night and feeling too cold or too hot, I don’t need to slip out of bed and run downstairs. It’s the best.

Not only that, but it can be set to self-adjust for night time temperatures, based on your workout schedule, whether you’re home, etc. This adds up to energy savings, too, which my wallet definitely needs.

Hi, everyone! First off, thank you SO much for all of the love yesterday on my picture ledges. It’s great when a project comes together like that. I think the ledges will be a fun space to keep fresh and change up throughout the seasons.

A few of you made note of my turquoise gourds both on the blog and Instragram. On Monday, I spent most of the afternoon spray painting ten dried gourds. As I mentioned, I’m trying to find a way to make fall decorating really fresh and colorful to tie in with my contemporary decor. At least, that was my intent. When I finished painting the gourds, I was a bit disappointed with the results and thought the idea was a fail.

However, when I was putting together my shelves yesterday, I needed a pop of color and all of the sudden my painted gourds had purpose. They totally complemented the look. I love when that happens. So, today I thought I’d just quickly (because it’s really simple) show you how I painted them.

I found all of the gourds on eBay. They are real gourds that have been dried. I also purchased a few cans of spray paint in colors that I thought would go well with my decor and still look like fall. I also picked up a can of gloss spray paint because I wanted the gourds to have a shiny finish.

I decided to keep the stems natural, so I covered them with painter’s tape. I then tied a string to the stems and hung the gourds from a tree. First, I painted them all with the color (about three coats); then, I sprayed them with the gloss.

Once the gourds were dry, I was ready to decorate. Initially I had the idea of grouping them together. However, when I set them all on my mantel, the whole look was a bit much.

An aha moment came when I was setting up my ledges yesterday. Just using one color in a display seemed to work best.

I haven’t decided how I will use the rest of gourds in my fall decor, but I ran around the house today trying out different vignettes. I’m definitely seeing some potential. So, I guess this little project wasn’t a total fail after all.

This DIY Picture Ledge tutorial is a quick and inexpensive project anyone can tackle. Picture ledges are an easy way to decorate a wall with ease and style!

Howdy, friends! Today I’m back with a quick and inexpensive DIY project: DIY Picture Ledge.

But first, a bit of its backstory. A while ago, I hung a shelf in my upstairs hallway. I used some old corbels and a piece of wood for the shelf. Here’s what it looked like.

Not terrible, right? Still, it never worked for me. Maybe it was because the shelf stuck out too far or it was too high (The placement height was due to the built-in bench below.), but I always found it impossible to style.

It was dark and awkward and has been bothering me for quite some time. (I should also mention that the bench is built-in. It actually used to be a laundry shoot.)

Then about a month ago, I stumbled across the image of these picture ledges below via Pottery Barn.

Anyway, I fell in love with this picture ledge idea and thought it was something I could easily DIY.

How to Make a DIY Picture Ledge:

So, I headed out to the home improvement store, picked up 2 – 1x3x8 and 2- 1x6x8 pine boards. I cut them to length and then glued and nailed them together.

I did this project late at night and only snapped one photo with my phone. My apologies. However, it’s literally just gluing and screwing two boards together. Super simple.

After that, I pre-drilled some holes and screwed the picture ledge to the wall. I then painted them the same color (Sherwin Williams Gauzy White) as the wall. And that was it.

Ta da. New picture ledges! I paid about $25 for the boards. The rest of the materials were things I had on hand. Love these kind of projects.

While it’s looking better already, I clearly needed a few accessories to make this space come alive and feel a bit more like home.

How to Style a Picture Ledge:

I didn’t have a plan for what I was going to put on the new pictures ledges. I want them to come together over time so they have a collected look like the inspiration image.

So, I sourced my house for a few items and brought in a couple new things to come up with a cohesive and colorful look for the time being.

Picture Ledge:

These vintage amethyst mason jars, which I had just found on eBay, were the jumping off point for the display. (I actually bought them for the little shelf in my basement stairwell, so they might not stay here.) Anyway. Moving on.

Of course, gold and brass made an appearance as I have WAY too many of these accessories.

I also included a touch of fall. Remember those gourds I painted the other day? I’m happy to say they found a home and are adding a fun pop of color.

Yes, that’s one of Annie Baily’s photographs (the same artist in my wanderlust gallery wall). I’m obsessed with the colors of this print. Her photographs are amazing.

Other than that, most of the frames are from Target. The patterned pillow and “love” heart print came from HomeGoods and the “let it be” pillow and “Let’s go on an adventure” plate are from RedEnvelope.

I bought the wood vase when I was in Ireland this past summer. And the round brass ashtray was purchased at Goodwill.

I’m also considering a little table or stool in front of the bench. I love these sheepskin stools from Nate Berkus’s new collection, and I think one of those in front would look so perfect.

Once I get a few permanent pieces for this space, I’m going to hang some pictures on the wall just above the ledge to allow to me to layer things a bit more like the inspiration picture.

While it’s nowhere near complete, I think the whole picture ledge display came together nicely. Now, if I could just make a little progress on my bedroom, I’d be a happy guy.

Chicken Apple Sausage One Pan Pasta:

Sorry I didn’t post yesterday. I was WAY behind in my bookkeeping (my least favorite part about being self-employed), so I spent most of the day catching up on that. Before I knew it, the clock read 7 PM, and the day was gone. Apparently time also flies when you’re not having fun.

Lately I’ve been planning some ideas for fall decor, and in all honesty, I’m really stressed out about it. In the past, I didn’t do much indoor fall decorating. This year, however, I’m participating in a fall home tour, so I thought a few touches here and there would be good.

I’m trying to stay away from super country decor (which I love) because I don’t think it will work with my current style. So, in addition to my bookkeeping catch up yesterday, I spray painted some gourds. I’m not sure I like the results, but regardless of what I decide about them, the Fall Tour will be live next Wednesday, so you’ll see what I’ve come up with then.

Having said all that, I thought I’d take a break from decorating today and make something delicious to deal with my stress. Over the past month I’ve seen countless one pan pasta dishes on the Web. I try to stay away from recipes that contain mostly pasta, because as you know, I live by myself, love pasta, and don’t know when enough pasta is enough. However, I’ve been dying to try one of these recipes, so I figured I’d cook up a batch today and portion it out the rest of the week. (Unless I still can’t figure out my fall decor, stress out, and eat it all in one sitting.) I’m making One Pan Apple Chicken Sausage Pasta.\

How to Make Chicken Apple Sausage One Pan Pasta

I’ve changed things up a bit and am using one of my favorite sausages – chicken apple. There is something about the flavor combo that I just love. Plus, it seems especially fitting for fall.

What I love most about this recipe is that it comes together SO quickly. I kid you not. Thirty minutes tops. It’s all done in one pan, so cleanup is a breeze as well. And on top of all that, this recipe is super flavorful. The pasta actually cooks in chicken stock, cream, and the juice from the tomatoes. Yum!

The variations to this recipe are endless. Throw in any type of sausage or meat and feel free to add whatever veggies you like. You can even switch up the cheese. I’m already thinking about using steak, Gorgonzola, and sun-dried tomatoes the next time I make this. Sounds like heaven in a pan!

This Chicken Apple Sausage One Pan Pasta is one of my favorite go-to meals. You're love this one pot dish that's full of flavor and so easy to make!

Ingredients

  • tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 pound chicken apple sausage - sliced
  • 1/2 large onion - chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic - minced
  • 1 granny smith apple - chopped
  • 2 cups chicken broth
  • 1 can (14.5 oz)tomatoes with green chilies
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 10 ounces pasta - (I used Cellentani.)
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 cup Monterey Jack cheese - shredded
  • 1/4 cup green onions - sliced thinly for garnish

Instructions

  • n a large oven-safe pan / skillet, add olive oil and set the temperature to medium high heat. Add in the onions and sausage and cook for about 5 minutes until brown. Then, put in the garlic and apples, cooking for about another minute.
  • Next, add the chicken broth, canned tomatoes, heavy cream, pasta, salt, and pepper. Stir to combine. Bring the mixture to a boil; then reduce the heat to medium low. Cover and let simmer until the pasta is cooked al dente.
  • Remove the pan from the heat and add 1/2 cup of cheese to the pasta. Stir to combine. Sprinkle the top with the remaining cheese. Broil in the oven until the cheese melted.
  • Serve up, garnish with sliced green onions, and enjoy!

These DIY Pegboard Kitchen Storage Ideas will have your kitchen looking beautiful while keeping it functional.

Sometimes when I’m working on a project, I think to myself, “What in the heck am I doing? My to-do list is a mile long and the month has just started, I feel overwhelmed with how much I have to do.” And then, all of the sudden, I get this notion for a new project. Temporarily abandoning my massive to-do list, I find myself covered in paint with another area of my house torn up. And, since I started this one new project, I end up putting more things on my to-do list. Can anyone relate?

However, when the project is finally complete, I’m overjoyed with the results and wonder how I could live any other way.

So, here I am today in my kitchen (which I rarely show because it’s not the most amazing space), completely changing things around. Here’s what happened. I’m part of the Lowe’s Creative Blogger Team, and this month’s challenge was kitchen organization. Usually, I’m horribly late posting for Lowe’s which makes me feel terrible about myself, so I wanted to get my act together this month. I needed to make the 45-minute trek to Lowe’s this week for a few other things, and when I was there, out of the blue I got this idea for pegboard storage. I knew this was the project I needed to do, and that I needed to do it today. (Now, my project is only a day late. Baby steps.)

Four years ago (when I was a bit more into rustic / junk decor), I had the great idea to turn these crates I’d found in my basement into shelves in my kitchen. Since then, my style has evolved, and I’ve grown tired of the crates. I decided a change was in order. I decide to make create a pegboard kitchen storage area.

So, while on my shopping adventure at Lowe’s, I picked up a piece of pegboard (which happened to be the perfect size) and some pegboard accessories.

I wanted the pegboard to be white, so I gave it a coat of primer. Then I finished it off with a bright white trim paint.

I also picked up a couple little packages of peg board accessories. Thankfully, they included screws and spacers for hanging the board on my wall. Easy.

I decided to get three of these gray baskets as well. As you will see in a moment, I gave them a new look with a quick coat of spray paint.

After lots of cleaning, accessorizing, and some more painting, I have a brand new peg wall of organization! Let’s check it out.

So much better, right? It’s bright. It’s clean. It’s happy. And now I’m happy.

As you can see, the little baskets got a makeover. Valspar’s Rosy Cheeks spray paint gave them the perfect amount of pretty.

The baskets were filled with things I’m always reaching for when in the kitchen: salt, pepper, and little dishes. I also tucked in a plant because every styled space needs a touch of nature.

Other hooks were used to hang measuring cups and spoons. I like two sets of measuring cups, especially when baking. One set is for dry ingredients; the other is for wet. Very convenient.

I also used a screwdriver organizer for some cooking tools my Mom got for me. Love that.

Across the top of the pegboard is a 1x4x8 board I cut to size. The stain color is Provincial. This shelf provides storage for things I don’t use as frequently but like to display.

Since organization can also be pretty, I added a frame with a “cheeky” postcard I picked up in Ireland.

And to tie this whole area together, I changed around the art on the opposite wall. I had a basic white frame on hand, and I spray painted a portion of it black. Inside the frame is this artwork I found here. “Throw kindness around like confetti.” It’s a great little reminder to have in a space I use so much.

I also did a little cupboard organization and made room for some kitchen gadgets that were previously sitting on the counter collecting dust.

And that’s it! For a project that wasn’t even on my to-do list, I think it’s both cute and functional. Plus, it’s a much better reflection of where my design taste is these days.

Although it felt like a never-ending project, I’m happy to report that my basement stairwell is painted! Before we get into the details, I just want to apologize for the quality of the pictures. This is a tight space, so capturing it was a bit tricky.

While the area has yet to be decorated, the painting is complete and that makes me a happy man. When I introduced this project, I told you I’d chosen a green color for the walls. However, after picking out a new wall sconce and art for the space, I changed my mind and went with a light violet. It’s Elation from Sherwin Williams.

As many of you know, gray has been my color of choice lately. For this small space, though, I wanted something a bit bolder and happier. I think I found it. I also love how clean it makes the space look and feel. Let’s take a look at a before shot.

I seriously cannot tell you how pleased I am to have this painting project completed. This space has bothered me since I moved into my house. Ultimately, I was waiting to get a new door installed, and after that happened, I was free to make the rest of the space look as good as the new door. It’s amazing what a big difference a small change like this can make.

I probably went a little overboard with the crown molding and shelves, but I’m so glad I did. I think they finish off this area and tie it in with the rest of the house.

Like I mentioned previously, I found a great wall sconce for this space. I also picked up some wall art by an artist I discovered while traveling in Ireland this past summer. I’m also trying to decide what I want to do for rugs. I’m leaning toward a runner. I could leave the stairs as they are, but I think a runner will protect the finish and add a bit of coziness to the space.

I can’t believe that I’ve been blogging for almost five years and have yet to feature a recipe for Pumpkin Bars. Well, as you’ve probably noticed, I’ve finally created one that I’m excited to share. I actually made these last week, but thought I’d wait until September to blog about them. After all, September is the start of Pumpkin-Flavored-Everything-Season.

As you can imagine, there are a million pumpkin bar recipes out there. After looking at several of the “best” recipes, I came up with my own. It’s based in part on one of the classic recipes from Better Homes and Gardens.

After owning a B&B for five years and cooking up lots of pumpkin-related items for breakfast, I’ve learned something about baking with pumpkin. Here’s the secret – it’s all about the spices. No matter how much pumpkin puree you include in your recipe, that really fabulous pumpkin flavor comes from the spices.

Pumpkin Bars | Inspired by Charm

Whenever, I’m baking something with pumpkin, I always include cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and pumpkin pie spice. I’ve found that this combination gives the best flavor. If you want to ensure a really good fall flavor, makes sure to add in all those spices. Okay?

Pumpkin Bars | Inspired by Charm

These particular pumpkin bars have pecans on top of the frosting. Feel free to leave them off or use walnuts, candy corn, or whatever makes you happy. I know some folks are picky about nuts in / on things, so that part is up to you. Even a dusting of cinnamon on top would be nice for a little added garnish.

I’m pretty sure this is the best way to kick off Pumpkin-Flavored-Everything-Season!

Pumpkin Bars

Here's what you will need:
2 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
2 teaspoons cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon cloves
1/2 cup butter, softened
1 1/2 cup sugar
3 eggs
1 15-ounce can of pumpkin puree
1/2 cup sour cream
1/4 cup milk
1 teaspoon vanilla

Cream Cheese Frosting:
4 ounces cream cheese, softened
1/2 cup butter, softened
1 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
4 1/2 cups powdered sugar
1/2 cup pecans, chopped for garnish (optional)

Begin by preheating your oven to 350 degrees F. Then grease and flour a 15x10x1-inch baking pan. Set aside.

In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, baking powder, cinnamon, pumpkin pie spice, nutmeg, and cloves. Set aside.

In a stand mixer (or large bowl with hand mixer), beat the butter for about one minute. Then beat in the sugar until light and fluffy (about two more minutes). Add eggs, pumpkin, sour cream, milk and vanilla; beat until combined. (It's OK if your batter looks curdled or separated.) Add in your flour mixture and beat until just combined.

Spread the mixture evenly into your prepared baking pan. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted near the center comes out clean. Cool on wire rack.

For the frosting, combine cream cheese, butter, and vanilla. Beat with an electric mixer until light and fluffy. Slowly beat in the powdered sugar, one cup at a time. Continue beating until the frosting is smooth.
