DIY Clay Herb Markers | Inspired by Charm

I’m in the process of redecorating the side porch on my house. The goal is to make it cozier and more comfortable. Things are coming along as planned, but I wanted to add a few quirky, DIY touches.

Because I don’t have much of a yard, having a vegetable garden is out of the question. However, in the summer, I do like to have a ready supply of fresh herbs. So, as you may have seen a couple day ago, I used an existing shelf on my porch to plant a variety of herbs.

DIY Clay Herb Markers | Inspired by Charm

Although I can easily identity the plants by their leaves, I think it’s considerate to include some sort of maker for folks who aren’t as familiar with herbs. Plus, this shelf herb garden could use a spot or two of color amidst the green..

So yesterday, I grabbed some clay and paint and got to work creating these colorful DIY Clay Herb Markers.

DIY Clay Herb Markers | Inspired by Charm

With colors to match my outdoor decor and a touch of gold (of course!), these little makers are a fun and practical addition to my shelf herb garden.

To be a bit more subtle with my markings, I chose to use only the first letter of each herb. To my surprise, no letter was repeated in my collection. A happy accident.

DIY Clay Herb Markers | Inspired by Charm

I’m so pleased with the way they turned out and the color and whimsy they bring to the herbs. Let me show you how to make them.

DIY Clay Herb Markers
Here’s what you will need:
Sculpey oven-bake clay
Baking sheet
Various paints
Gold liquid guilding
Paint brushes

Start by removing the clay from the package. Knead the clay until soft and smooth.

DIY Clay Herb Markers | Inspired by Charm

Next, take a portion of the clay and roll it into a snake shape with your hands. This will create the the shape of the makers. Try to make the clay as even as possible, but don’t go to crazy. These are homemade. You can make them as long as you’d like. Mine were a little over 6 inches.

DIY Clay Herb Markers | Inspired by Charm

Next, start creating your letter. Again, roll more of your clay into a snake shape, then shape it into whatever letter you need.

DIY Clay Herb Markers | Inspired by Charm

With your letter created, press the clay from the stake into the clay of the letter.

DIY Clay Herb Markers | Inspired by Charm

Use your fingers to join the two. Seal off and cover up any seams with your finger.

Place you’re finished marker on an oven-proof glass or metal surface.

DIY Clay Herb Markers | Inspired by Charm

Repeat the above process with all your herb markers. Once complete, bake according to the directions on the package of clay. In my case, I baked these for about 45 minutes at 275 degrees F.

Allow your markers to cool completely; then you’re ready to paint.

DIY Clay Herb Markers | Inspired by Charm

I decided to paint the letters a color and the stakes gold.

DIY Clay Herb Markers | Inspired by Charm

I had eight markers, so I chose four different colors. For four of the markers, I used each color right out of the bottle. For the other four markers, I added a bit of white to each color to create four more colors. After painting the letters, give them time to dry.

Once the letters are dry, the stakes are ready to be painted. Here, I used a gold liquid guilding rather than regular paint. The guilding gave the gold color a great shine and luster. (Please note that gold liquid building does not clean up with water.)

DIY Clay Herb Markers | Inspired by Charm

Once the guilding is completely dry, your herb markers are complete.

DIY Clay Herb Markers | Inspired by Charm

This project was relatively simple, and as I said, I couldn’t be happier with the way the markers turned out. I also love that this project is really flexible. You can change the size, shape / style of the letter, paint colors, etc.

clay garden marker

As much as I love the gold accent on these, I ALMOST stopped after just painting the letters. There is something so attractive about the natural clay color. What do you think? I decided to go with the gold because … it’s gold. Ha! And because I wanted to provide some protection for the markers since they’re going to be in soil.

Once I finished the project, it was time to get these pots back outside and on their shelf on the porch.

colorful herb markers

They add an unexpected touch of color and sparkle to my space. Do you agree?

DIY Clay Herb Markers | Inspired by Charm

Now it’s time to get the rest of this porch ready so I can show you my progress. Stay tuned.

These Mini Skillet Blueberry Pies are all the things you love about classic blueberry pie, but served in adorable mini skillets.

Mini Skillet Blueberry Pies | Inspired by Charm

Lately, I’ve been having some serious pie cravings. I’m not sure what it is about summer, but I feel like I should be eating pie at the end of every meal. Okay, maybe just dinner. And a slice for breakfast wouldn’t hurt, either. Right?

Mini Skillet Blueberry Pies | Inspired by Charm

Mini Skillet Blueberry Pies

With blueberry season just around the corner here in Central PA, I thought we could all use a quick-down-and-dirty-no-fuss blueberry pie recipe. However, you know me; I had to up the creative and cuteness factor a bit.

Since it’s A Year of the Skillet on IBC, I decided to make these adorable Mini Skillet Blueberry Pies. I think they would be perfect for a small get-together or quiet dinner on the deck with friends or family.

Mini Skillet Blueberry Pies | Inspired by Charm

What makes these no-fuss is the use of store-bought pie crust. Yes, I know that homemade is better, and that last year I taught you how to make a simple crust. However, it’s hot and sunny, and we all want to be outside enjoying the summer weather as much as possible, so a ready-made crust will do just fine. As I told you, this is a quick-down-and-dirty-no-fuss recipe.

Mini Skillet Blueberry Pies | Inspired by Charm

Since the local blueberries aren’t quite ripe, I picked up some at my local supermarket. If you’re preparing this pie out of season, frozen berries would work as well. When making any sort of fruit pie, taste your fruit before adding the sugar. In most cases, the recommended amount should work fine. However, if you like your pies a bit sweeter, toss in a little more sugar. If you prefer them on the tart side, just decrease the amount slightly. Personally, I like sweet with a hint of tartness. This combination is magical when the pie is served with a big scoop of vanilla ice cream. The flavors seem perfectly balanced.

Mini Skillet Blueberry Pies | Inspired by Charm

For the crust, you’ll need 1 package (2 rolls of dough). Using your mini skillet as a guide, cut around it so that each dough circle is about 1/2 inch larger than the mini skillet. (These are the mini skillets I have.) After you have filled each skillet with a dough circle, ball up the excess dough and roll it out. Use that dough to make the tops for your pies.

Another tip: Since things tend to brown quickly in my oven, after about 10 minutes, I loosely covered my pies with a piece of aluminum foil to prevent burnt crust.

Mini Skillet Blueberry Pies | Inspired by Charm

The resulting pies make wonderful individual servings. I always say that ice cream is optional, but, come on, whom am I kidding?

Consider my craving satisfied!

Pretty simple and totally delicious looking, right? Give them a try and let me know what you think.

These Mini Skillet Blueberry Pies are all the things you love about classic blueberry pie, but served in adorable mini skillets.

Ingredients

  • 1 package (2 rolls) refrigerated pie dough or homemade pie crust*
  • 4 1/2 cups blueberries
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons butter - cold and cubed
  • 1 egg - lightly beaten
  • Sugar for dusting
  • Vanilla ice cream and mint spring for garnish

Instructions

  • In a large bowl, mix together the blueberries, sugar, flour, cinnamon, and lemon juice. When stirring, break up a few of the berries to release some juice. Allow to sit 15-20 minutes.
  • Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F.
  • Cut four circles out of the 2 rolls of pie dough. Each dough circle should be about 1/2 inch larger than the mini skillet you’re using as your guide.. Reserve excess dough. Place the dough circle into the skillet, being careful not to stretch the dough. With a knife trim off any excess dough.
  • Ball up all of the extra dough and roll it out on a lightly floured surface. Cut out four more circles large enough to cover the top of a mini skillet.
  • Next, evenly divide the blueberry mixture among the skillets. Top each with approximately 1/2 tablespoon of cubed, cold butter.
  • Cover each skillet with a piece of dough. Using your fingers, crimp the edge of dough all the way around to seal. Brush with egg wash and sprinkle lightly with sugar. Place skillets onto a cookie sheet for baking.
  • Bake for 35-40 minutes or until crust is golden and the filling is bubbly. (If the top crust starts to get brown before the inside is hot, cover with aluminum foil.)
  • Cool before serving. Top with ice cream and garnish with a sprig of mint.

Watermelon Mojitos | Inspired by Charm

Cheers to another weekend! Earlier in the week my mom and I went to the movies. When we walked out of the theater around 9:15 p.m., it was still light out. All I could think was, “Woooah.” This, my friends, is why I’m crazy about summer. The days just never want to end, and flip flops are the shoes du jour. Early morning coffee on the porch and cocktails in the afternoon only add to the allure of this time of year.

It’s been a while since I’ve had a Drink and Links post here on IBC, so in celebration of all things summer, let’s whip up a cocktail and take a look at some awesome web content.

Watermelon Mojitos | Inspired by Charm

First off, my recipe for Watermelon Mojitos!

Watermelon Mojitos | Inspired by Charm

One of my favorite things to grow each summer is pineapple mint. Its variegated leaves, soft texture, and mellow flavor make me want to find any excuse to use it.

<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><a href="https://vimeo.com/120206922">The routine is the enemy of time</a>.</p>

When I owned my B&B, I loved to include a stem of it in bowls of mixed fruit or yogurt and granola parfaits. It never ceased to amaze me how that one little detail made such a big difference in the look and taste of those standard breakfast items.

Anyway, today, I’m adding plenty of it to these delicious cocktails that are beyond perfect for summer. Along with the mint, pureed fresh watermelon, white rum, lime juice, and a little sweetness come together to create a thirst-quenching afternoon treat. And it’s simple to make.

Watermelon Mojitos | Inspired by Charm

To keep your watermelon mojito staying flavorful til the last drop, let me suggest this little trick: Cut some watermelon into small cubes and throw them in the freezer for a couple hours before making your drinks. Use them instead of regular ice cubes to prevent your cocktail from becoming watered down from melted ice.. The frozen watermelon cubes also double as a garnish and sweet snack.

Now, let’s make a few cocktails!

Watermelon Mojitos | Inspired by Charm

Watermelon Mojitos

(makes 2 cocktails)

Here's what you will needs:
3 large slices of watermelon (plus extra cubed and frozen for "ice" cubes)
10-15 mint leaves, plus more for garnish
4 ounces white rum
2 tablespoons simple syrup
2 tablespoons lime juice, freshly squeeze

In two glasses, divide the mint leaves equally and smash them slightly with a muddler or the back of a wooden spoon. Set aside. Remove the rind and any large or dark seeds from the watermelon. Then, in a blender or food processor, puree the watermelon.

To each glass, add ice (or frozen cubed watermelon), 2 tablespoons of white rum, 1 tablespoon of simple syrup, and 1 tablespoon lime juice. Top with pureed watermelon. Stir, garnish with a sprig of mint, and serve.

Sangria and Snacks | Inspired by Charm

Sangria is a must for summer. I’m stirring up one of my favorites: White Wine Sangria! It’s an easy and delicious cocktail recipe everyone will love.

Sangria and Snacks | Inspired by Charm

White Wine Sangria:

If I didn’t need to work in order to pay my bills, I would probably sit on my porch all summer long eating or drinking something delicious (like this White Wine Sangria!), listening to music, and watching the traffic on my street. In my opinion, it doesn’t get much better or more simple than that. Those are the moments of summer (and life in general) that I look forward to the most. The ones that come together with hardly any effort, but mean so much.

With this attitude in mine, I decided to whip up a batch of White Wine Sangria. I’ve shared red and blush sangrias on IBC in the past, so I figured it was time for a white.

Grilled Pineapple Chicken Kabobs | Inspired by Charm

It’s embarrassing to admit, but I didn’t grill once last summer. It was even worse because I absolutely love anything grilled. So I’ve made a promise to myself to take advantage of warmer days this year by getting outside and grilling more often. As an additional incentive, I keep reminding myself that a huge benefit of grilling is not having to clean up the whole kitchen.

One reason I didn’t do any grilling last year was because I had major problems with my old grill. I just couldn’t get it to work correctly. It was a hand-me-down, and I think it had probably seen better days.

Grilled Pineapple Chicken Kabobs | Inspired by Charm

However, thanks to my friends at Weber, I now have their new Weber Q 1200 grill. This thing is the best! As many of you know, I don’t have a huge outdoor space, so this grill is perfect. It takes up minimal space. Plus, it’s portable. I love that it can be taken to an event, tailgating, camping, etc. But I haven’t gotten to the best part; it’s available in six fun colors. You can show your personality as you grill.

Grilled Pineapple Chicken Kabobs | Inspired by Charm

As tempted as I was by all of the happy colors, I ultimately chose to stick with black. With my house being more traditional in style (and since that’s where I’ll mostly use the grill), that color was the best fit for me.

Grilled Pineapple Chicken Kabobs | Inspired by Charm

This past weekend I decided to break it in with some grilled pineapple chicken kabobs. Food on a stick is so much fun, so I couldn’t have picked a more appropriate food to inaugurate my new grill.

After the chicken spent a few hours in a delicious marinade bath, everything was skewered and ready for the grill. The grill was so simple to use, and the kabobs were cooked in no time.

Grilled Pineapple Chicken Kabobs | Inspired by Charm

I also love that grilling can be a healthier way to eat. I could live on grilled chicken and veggies all summer. Those little dark charred bits are my favorite. Anyone agree?

Grilled Pineapple Chicken Kabobs | Inspired by Charm

Okay, enough talk, let’s get cooking!

Grilled Pineapple Chicken Kabobs | Inspired by Charm

Grilled Pineapple Chicken Kabobs

Here's what you will need:

1 cup pineapple juice
1/3 cup soy sauce
1/3 cup honey
1 tablespoon sriracha
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
Salt and pepper to taste
1 1/2 pounds chicken, cubed
3 bell peppers (red, orange, and yellow), cubed
1 medium red onion, cubed
2 cups fresh pineapple, cubed
Grilling skewers

In a bowl, whisk together the pineapple juice, soy sauce, honey, sriracha, and garlic powder. Add in cubed chicken, cover, and marinate for 2-3 hours.

Once marinated, thread the chicken, pineapple, peppers, and onions on grilling skewers, alternating the items.

Heat your grill to medium-high. Lightly oil the grill grates and then place the kabobs on the grill. Cover and cook over medium-high heat for 12-15 minutes (or until the chicken is fully cooked), turning once during the cooking process.

Whatcha Packin' | Inspired by Charm

I’m in the midst of preparing to head out of town for a work trip / vacation. Even though summer is just about in full swing here, I’m really looking forward to a week away. My brain has been a little foggy the past several months, so I’m hoping that some relaxation and refocusing will help clear my head.

As I start packing, I thought it’d be fun to share a few of my travel essentials for this trip, and travel in general. I haven’t previously posted about this, so I hope it’s helpful and mildly interesting. Here’s what I’m packin’!

Whatcha Packin' | Inspired by Charm

Since this is a work-related trip, technology is a must. I have a Macbook Air that goes with me whenever I travel. I’d prefer to just carry a tablet, however, it doesn’t have the functionality and programs I need. Another travel essential for me is my phone. I’ll be leaving the country, so I’ve enabled a global plan should an emergency arise. This is especially important because I’m traveling alone. I’ll also use my phone as my camera. I estimate that 80% of my travel photos are taken with my iPhone. I will bring along this point and shoot camera for any better quality pictures I want to snap. I find traveling with my DSLR to be cumbersome due its size, having to switch lenses, etc. I also worry about it too much, so I rarely take it on trips. A backup power charger is another must when I travel. This particular charger powers my phone from dead to fully charged several times before needing to be recharged. Worries about finding an outlet are a thing of the past.

I’m headed to the Caribbean again, so beach attire is a necessity. I’m a big fan of this style of swimming trunks from 2xist. They are on the shorter side, making them a bit more stylish without being too short. A few tank tops are likewise a must. I think black looks best on me so I usually pack a few of those. I’ll be bringing sunglasses too. When packing the rest of my clothes, I try to stick to things in same color palette. This makes mixing and matching super simple. For this trip, I’m taking two pairs of flip flops and three pairs of shoes – sneakers for exercise / walking, casual but dressy shoes (a pair of brown boat shoes), and one fun pair of shoes. These Sperry X Gray Malin slip-ons will be perfect with my color palette.

Since I will be gone for more than a week, I’m packing a large bag, one carry on (a backpack), and a small canvas tote. Once I get to the airport, I’ll check my large bag. For my carry on, I prefer using a stylish backpack. This makes travel so much easier at the airport and when exploring at your destination. It leaves your hands free, and it’s easier on your shoulders. For the plane, I’ll usually unpack my small canvas tote from my backpack and fill it with anything I’ll need during the flight. I have long legs and this frees up precious leg room. The tote also works great at the destination when heading to the pool or beach.

Included among my incidentals is a book. Right now I’m reading Better Than Before by Gretchen Rubin. (It’s been a fantastic read thus far, and I’m hoping to share some thoughts about it next week.) I also have Audible downloaded on my phone and will listen to a book on my drive to the airport, the flight, or if I’m having trouble falling asleep while traveling. Of course, sunscreen is a given, but I also like to bring along after-sun lotion. No matter how much sunscreen I apply, some part of me usually gets burned, and this stuff is heaven sent.

Finally, I always pack a small notebook and my trusty sharpies. This trip is especially important since I want to use some of the time alone to figure out work and life goals. As selfish as it may sound, I need to refocus on what’s important to me without any outside influences. Being mostly disconnected from the world gives me a chance to do that. And since you know I love to share all that weirdly personal stuff here, I’m sure there will be a post about it on my return.

That’s it!

I’ll be heading out soon, so if you have any interest in coming along on this next adventure, be sure to follow along on Instagram and Snapchat at inspiredbycharm. Also, since this is a new type of post for IBC, let me know what you think in the comments below. I love your feedback.

Red Velvet Cupcake | Inspired by Charm

With Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day get-togethers on the horizon, I’m always excited to whip up something delicious to share with family and friends.

Red Velvet Cupcake | Inspired by Charm

For patriotic national holidays such as these, I lean toward red, white, and blue when it comes to baking inspiration. Since red velvet is a favorite of many people (and the color is so appropriate ), today I’m sharing a delicious recipe for Red Velvet Cupcakes.

Red Velvet Cupcake | Inspired by Charm

One thing I absolutely love about this recipe is the frosting. A cup of chopped pecans is stirred into a classic cream cheese frosting. Not only do the pecans have great flavor, but they add a touch of texture and crunch, too. I love being able to update a classic recipe with this delicious little detail.

Red Velvet Cupcake | Inspired by Charm

Finally, to give these cupcakes and all-American twist, I popped some cake decorating sugar candies on the top. Simple, but super effective. What do you think?

Red Velvet Cupcake | Inspired by Charm

Let me show you how to whip these up.

10 Patriotic Desserts | Inspired by Charm

Red Velvet Cupcakes with Pecan Cream Cheese Frosting

Makes about 30 cupcakes

Here's what you will need:

Red Velvet Cupcakes
2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon kosher salt
2 teaspoons unsweetened cocoa powder
2 cups granulated sugar
2 large eggs
1 3/4 cups vegetable oil
1 cup buttermilk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 bottle (2 ounces) red food coloring

Pecan Cream Cheese Frosting
1 package (8 ounces) cream cheese, room temperature
1 /2 cup butter, room temperature
4 cups confectioner's sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 cup pecans, chopped
Flag sugar candies, optional

Begin by preheating your oven to 350 degrees F. Line a muffin pan with paper baking cups and set aside.

In a medium-size bowl, sift together the flour, baking soda, salt, and cocoa. Set aside. Then in a large mixing bowl (or stand mixer), combine the sugar and the eggs. Next slowly beat in the oil. To the sugar mixture, add the flour alternatively with the butter milk, beginning and ending with the flour mixture. Stir in the vanilla and food coloring. Mix until just combined.

Spoon the batter into the muffin cups, filling each cup about 2/3 fill. Bake for 18-20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted near the center of the cupcake comes out clean. Let the cupcakes cool for five minutes before removing them from the pan to cool completely.

For the frosting, cream the cream cheese and butter together. Beat in the powdered sugar until smooth. Add the vanilla and nuts and mix until combined. Spread the frosting onto the cupcakes. Decorate with patriotic sugar candies.

Bedroom Gallery Wall | Inspired by Charm

I have been wanting to get some things hung on the walls of my bedroom / closet for the past several months. It was to the point that the bare walls were really driving me nuts.

Bedroom Gallery Wall | Inspired by Charm

So, fortunately when I was at T.J. Maxx last week with my mom, I noticed their sizable selection of frames. I have a fairly large, blank wall space above the dresser in my closet that I envisioned as an ideal place for a gallery wall. I knew that I needed a few smaller frames and was able to find a few options that might work. Without thinking too much about it, I picked out six frames that fit my color and texture palette for the room and checked out. I figured I could return anything that didn’t work.

Today, armed with my new frames, plus some old ones and a mirror I bought a while back, I was ready to tackle this blank wall.

Bedroom Gallery Wall | Inspired by Charm

Now I know there are many ways to create a successful gallery-style wall. I decided to abandon those tried-and true techniques and just go for it. However, there was a little method to my madness. Let me show you what I did.

First, I came up with a rough scheme for the frames. Gold-y/Copper-y metallics (based), whites, and woods. Next, before I started hanging things on the wall, I laid out all of the frames on the floor.

Bedroom Gallery Wall | Inspired by Charm

I had a sizable collection to choose from, so I just played around until I found a design I liked. For this particular wall, I wanted something that looked very collected and mismatched. Different shapes and textures are great for creating this type of look. I also decided to include a woven wall hanging I picked up in California.

Bedroom Gallery Wall | Inspired by Charm

Once I had a good layout, I started to hang things on the wall. I began with the large mirror and worked from there. Since things didn’t need to be perfectly spaced, I honestly didn’t do too much measuring. I just figured out where things would go by looking. I did need to move two things, so I’ll need to touch up two holes. Not too bad.

You’ll also notice that the final layout of things changed, too. Clearly I measured wrong and ran out of space. Oops! However, I’m truly glad this happened since this layout looks so much better.

Bedroom Gallery Wall | Inspired by Charm

With a little styling on my dresser to tie everything together, my new gallery wall is complete!

Bedroom Gallery Wall | Inspired by Charm

Now, I will say one thing: 90% of the art and photographs will be changed. It totally works the way it is, but I want to inject a bit more color. The goal was to get the frames on the wall. Now I can go back and fill in with the prints and photos I want.

Bedroom Gallery Wall | Inspired by Charm

I would have left the frames empty, but I’ve learned from experience that it’s no fun to see my empty frames when they are shared on social media.

The goal with this wall is to keep things light and fun. For example this tattooed muscle man print will stay and represents how I want this wall to look. A bit more quirky and colorful.

That wraps up another project. What do you think of my new gallery wall? Have you tried one in your space yet?

I have been wanting to get some things hung on the walls of my bedroom / closet for the past several months. It was to the point that the bare walls were really driving me nuts. So, fortunately when I was at T.J. Maxx last week with my mom, I noticed their sizable selection of […]

Skillet Apple Pizza Pie | Inspired by Charm

After all of the recent outdoor work, I thought we could use a little treat. Who’s with me?

In keeping with A Year of the Skillet, I’ve been inspired to try yet another dessert: Skillet Apple Pizza Pie. What can I say? I have a sweet tooth. The idea for this creation comes from Nicole of Brown Sugar. Of course, I had to make mine grander and more decedent.

Skillet Apple Pizza Pie | Inspired by Charm

Skillet Apple Pizza Pie | Inspired by Charm

If you’re a fan of apple pie, but dread making crust, this recipe is for you. It’s the perfect combination of pie meets pizza. It’s a really thick pie with a soft crust and delicious crumb topping. I mean, I can’t even.

Skillet Apple Pizza Pie | Inspired by Charm

I also love this recipe because it uses tubed pizza dough. Now, I’m all about making my own dough, but there are days when you just don’t have time for that. With everything else happening in this dish, no one will notice (or care) that you used dough from a tube.

Skillet Apple Pizza Pie | Inspired by Charm

One other thing to note before diving in: Make sure you factor in time for your cooked apples to cool. If you’re in a hurry, spread them out on a baking sheet and pop them in the fridge for a few minutes. You’ll have an extra pan to wash, but it will cut down on the cooling time.’

Skillet Apple Pizza Pie | Inspired by Charm

Anyway, give this recipe a try and let me know what you think. The recipe is below.

Skillet Apple Pizza Pie | Inspired by Charm

Skillet Apple Pizza Pie

Here's what you will need:

Filling:
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
4 Granny Smith apples, peeled and cubed
1/3 cup brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

Crumb topping:
1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
1/3 cup sugar
1/3 cup brown sugar
1 1/2 cup flour
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon salt

1 tube (13.5 ounces) Pillsbury Pizza Crust
2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
2 tablespoons sugar
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

Glaze:
1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 - 3 tablespoons milk

Vanilla ice cream for serving, optional

Begin by making the filling. Melt 2 tablespoons of butter in a large pan on medium-high heat. Add the apples and allow them to cook for about five minutes. Then stir in the brown sugar and cinnamon. Adjust the heat to medium and allow the apples to cook for about 10 more minutes until they are tender and the sauce is thick. Remove from heat. Set aside and allow to cool completely.

Preheat your oven to 425 degrees F. Spray a 10-inch cast iron skillet (or pie dish) with baking spray. Place the pizza dough inside the pan, shaping it to cover the bottom of the pan and the sides. If the dough is hanging over the sides, tear it off and pinch it back to another area where the dough is not covering the pan.

In a small dish, combine 2 tablespoons sugar and 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon. Brush the dough with butter, then sprinkle with cinnamon-sugar mixture. (You might not use all of the butter or cinnamon sugar.)

In a large bowl, make the crumb topping by combining the butter, sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon and salt until crumbly. Squeeze the mixture in your hands to create larger crumbles.

Then, add the cooled apples to the top of the dough. Sprinkle the crumb topping evenly on the apples. Use as much or little of the crumb topping as you like.

Bake for 10 - 12 minutes or until the crust is golden.

In the meantime, in a small bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar, vanilla, and milk. Add one tablespoon of milk at a time until the desired consistency is reached.

Once the pie is removed from the oven, allow it to cool. Drizzle with the glaze and serve with ice cream, if desired.

Pretty simple, right? I say the ice cream is optional, but you’re going to want it. Trust me.

Classic Margaritas | Inspired by Charm

If you’re looking for a classic margarita recipe, this is it! A simple recipe with really good ingredients creates a delicious margarita every time. Cheers!

Cinco de Mayo is next week so I thought a little celebration was in order.  With a celebration we need a cocktail. Today it’s a classic margarita recipe!

A long time ago I shared my recipe for a classic cosmopolitan. As much as I enjoy trying new things with unique ingredients, sometimes the classics are just as good, if not better.

Classic Margaritas | Inspired by Charm

When you combine quality, simple ingredients, magic happens. In fact, that’s probably why some cocktails have become classics. So, in celebration of Cinco de Mayo and all delicious things, let’s make some Classic Margaritas.

Classic Margaritas | Inspired by Charm

The BEST Classic Margarita Recipe:

Like I mentioned above, when you’re gathering your ingredients to create this recipe, make sure they are the best you can afford. Freshly squeezed lime juice and lemon juice are musts.

Also, stick to reasonably good booze. You don’t need top shelf; somewhere right in the middle will do. I like a clear tequila for margaritas, but that’s up to you.

Classic Margaritas | Inspired by Charm

You’ll notice that this recipe doesn’t include any added sweetness. I’m not into overly sweet drinks, so this is fine with me. However, if you like things on the sweeter side, a splash of simple syrup would work well in this recipe.

Classic Margaritas | Inspired by Charm

Classic Margaritas | Inspired by Charm

As you can see, I’m serving these margaritas on the rocks. If you prefer them blended, this recipe will work for that, too. Instead of shaking things up in a cocktail shaker, toss everything in a blender, add ice, and puree.

Okay, enough chatter. Let’s get this fiesta started!

This Five Cheese Sun-Dried Tomato Pasta is a delicious meal recipe loaded with delicious and rich flavor.

After a week of healthy eating and yesterday’s snowfall (Yes, it snows in late April in PA.), I was craving something flavor-packed, hearty, and easy to make. Several years ago I made Ina Garten’s Penne with Five Cheeses. This dish immediately came to mind when my craving struck. I knew it would be perfect.

5 Cheese Sun-Dried Tomato Pasta | Inspired by Charm

How to Make Five Cheese Sun-Dried Tomato Pasta:

I decided to give it a little twist though. Inspired by my new Tomato Cocotte from Staub and wanting to pack an extra punch of flavor into this cheesy pasta dish, I was lead to sun-dried tomatoes.

penne pasta

For this recipe, I opted for the oil-packed variety. I generally like these better for most dishes. To me, they seem to have a much richer flavor. Just make sure to drain them using a colander. Then dab off any excess oil with a paper towel.

Along with the delicious variety of cheese, the sun-dried tomatoes complement this dish perfectly. Speaking of cheeses, feel free to get creative. While the combination in this recipe works nicely, if there’s something you don’t like, just leave it out or substitute something you prefer. You can even add chopped chicken if you like and make a meal out of it.

No matter which way you make it, you’re going to love this dish!

Five Cheese Sun-Dried Tomato Pasta Recipe:

5 Cheese Sun-Dried Tomato Pasta

Here's what you will need:
1 jar (8.5 ounce) oil-packed sun-dried tomatoes
2 cups heavy cream
1 cup crushed tomatoes in thick tomato puree
1/2 cup Pecorino Romano, freshly grated
1/2 cup Fontina, shredded
1/3 cup Gorgonzola, crumbled
3 tablespoons ricotta cheese
1/4 pound fresh mozzarella, cubed
6 leaves fresh basil, chopped
1 pound penne pasta
2 tablespoons unsalted butter, cubed
Salt and pepper to taste

Preheat your oven to 400 degrees F.

Next, drain the oil from the sun-dried tomatoes. Pat them dry with a paper towel to remove any excess oil and set them aside.

Bring water with a pinch of salt to a boil in a stockpot.

Meanwhile in a large bowl, combine all the ingredients, except the penne and butter. Mix well.

Add the pasta to the boiling water and parboil for about 5 minutes. Drain it well using a colander and add it to the ingredients in your large bowl. Toss to combine.

Place the pasta mixture in a large oven-safe pan that has a lid. Dot the pasta with butter and sprinkle with additional Pecorino Romano.

Bake for 20 minutes with the lid on. Remove the lid and bake for an additional 15 - 20 minutes until the top is browned and bubbly.

My Go-To Green Smoothie | Inspired by Charm

This Green Smoothie recipe is so easy to make and surprisingly delicious. You’re going to love it as much as I do.

Since the middle of January I’ve been on a mission to eat healthier and shed a few pounds. (Which is why I created this Green Smoothie recipe!)  In 2014, I put on some unwanted weight, and by the end of the year, I just wasn’t feeling so hot about myself. Beyond the number on the scale, my clothes weren’t fitting, and I wasn’t happy about what was reflected in the mirror.

In January I made a commitment to myself to better manage my diet, eat healthier, and make an honest effort to exercise more. Fast forward three months and I’m happy to report I’ve lost about 18 pounds. Most of my clothes are fitting again, and I’m feeling better when I look in the mirror. While I kept to a pretty strict (but manageable) diet most days, there were times when I ordered pizza, had a donut (or two) for breakfast, or ate half of a cinnamon roll skillet bread in one sitting. True story. I failed some times, but I got right back up.

While I’m still on my healthy journey, I’m super pleased with my progress and excited to continue.

My Go-To Green Smoothie:

My Go-To Green Smoothie | Inspired by Charm

I think diet and lifestyle are a personal thing. At the end of the day, if you’re happy with yourself, then OK! At the end of last year, I wasn’t. It wasn’t just the rising number on the scale or my tight-fitting clothes, it was more about how I felt in my own skin. I’m obviously no expert on healthful living or dieting, so going deeper into what works for me is probably a bad idea. However, I did want to share one little tool with you: My Go-To Green Smoothie.

Part of my plan was (and still is) to limit sugars and processed food and add more greens and natural foods to my diet. While I don’t make one every day, this green smoothie is a lunchtime favorite for me.

My Go-To Green Smoothie | Inspired by Charm

It fills me up, is easy to make, is packed with fruits and greens, and tastes pretty good, too. Now, hear me out. This doesn’t taste like a creamy strawberry banana smoothie, but given the ingredients, it’s pretty darn good.

The recipe below probably makes enough for two smoothies. However, I usually drink it all by myself. I figure, the more vegetables the better, and if it can fill me up – awesome!

What Ingredients are in a Green Smoothie:

  • green apple
  • cucumber
  • spinach (or kale)
  • frozen pineapple
  • fresh ginger root
  • coconut water (or filtered water)
  • lemon juice

If you really like smoothies and are making them almost everyday, I recommend using one of the better blenders (Vitamix or Blendtec). A good blender will definitely make things nice and smooth.

My Go-To Green Smoothie | Inspired by Charm

Everything goes right into the blender, and 40 seconds later, the smoothie is ready. The recipe below is the combination that I like best. To be honest, I don’t measure things out anymore. I just throw in what feels good. If you like things a bit sweeter, add more fruit. I like to use frozen pineapple to keep the smoothie cold. Depending on my mood, I’ll also might put in a little piece of fresh ginger for added spice.

Let’s mix one up!

Green Smoothie Recipe:

My Go-To Green Smoothie | Inspired by Charm

My Go-To Green Smoothie

1/2 cup coconut water (or water)
1 small cucumber (or 1/2 large cucumber)
1 cup spinach or kale, packed
1 cup pineapple, frozen
1 green apple, cored and sliced
Juice from one lemon
Nub of fresh ginger, peeled (optional)

Toss all of the ingredients into a blender; blend until smooth.

Print

That’s it. Now, you’ll want to serve this green smoothie  with a spoon or in a glass you can shake. The ingredients will start to separate as the drink sits. Just give it a little mix and you’re good to go.

My Go-To Green Smoothie | Inspired by Charm

I hope you enjoyed my progress report and recipe. If you liked it and  want more things like this, please let me know in the comments.

What's the Tea with IBC | Inspired by Charm

Happy Monday!

It’s been a while since we’ve just chatted / gossiped / spilled the tea here on IBC, and I kind of miss it. This past Friday, friend and fellow blogger Stacy of Not Just a Housewife’s posted about changes in the blogging world over the past few years. She noted that some bloggers have pulled back on personal details and lost their voices due to fear of criticism or a need to have their blogs be super professional and polished spaces. Her message really hit home with me.

While change is inevitable and usually positive, it’s important to stop every now and then to make sure we’re headed down the right path. And while I’m not always the best at doing it, I think limiting comparisons to others and being exactly who we are is crucial to a happy life. – As you well know, I struggle with comparison and self-love, but I like to think I’m getting a bit stronger everyday.

Anyway, I’m veering from my point. What I’m trying to say is that I’m joining Stacy in striving to bring back more personality and realness to blogging. And while I realize I can never please everyone, what I can do is be myself and make no apologies for it. However, I am totally in love with you guys and appreciate your opinions. So if you have suggestions, questions, ideas for posts, or constructive criticism, please email me.

Make sense? Awesome sauce! Moving on.

First, thank you SO much for the Spring House Tour love. I didn’t want to go into too much detail in the actual post, but house tours stress me out. As I mentioned, during the past few months I’ve been frustrated with my home and lack of design motivation. I guess this is a natural part of the creative cycle with a side of “what will everyone else think.” At any rate, thanks in part to the arrival of spring weather, I’m feeling a renewed sense of design energy and hope to start tackling some long overdue projects around here.

What's the Tea with IBC | Inspired by Charm

Speaking of spring, this past Saturday was gorgeous: 73 degrees F and sunny! So I loaded my backpack with water, snacks, and a good audio book and headed to Driftwood, PA for a hike. I’m planning to enjoy the great outdoors more this year, and hiking is high on my list. This Saturday I hiked the Fred Woods Trail which is about five miles long. Despite the lack of leaves on the trees, the views were fabulous, and it was a beautiful place to explore. I’m looking forward to hiking it again in the summer and fall.

What's the Tea with IBC | Inspired by Charm

As I’ve probably mentioned, I write monthly posts for Shari’s Berries. This month I created a cocktail / mocktail to celebrate Mother’s Day. It’s a Hibiscus Tea Cooler, and it’s delicious. I’m under no obligation to share this information with you here, but I was super proud of the photography in this post. I tried something new, and it paid off. Anyway, if you’re interested, you can get the recipe here.

And a few other things around the web that are totally worth checking out:

Now it’s your turn! Spill the tea, friends. What’s new with you? What things are you loving on the web?

Welcome to my Spring Home Tour! I’m so excited to be joining a crew of fabulous bloggers for the Spring Blogger Stylin’ Home Tours hosted by the always lovely Lindsey of The White Buffalo Styling Co. I will link up all of the participating bloggers are at the bottom of this post. I highly recommend that you check out everyone’s space. To anyone who’s visiting IBC for the first time, welcome to my blog and my home!

It feels as if not much has changed since our last little tour, but I figured I’d show you around anyway. As you might have guessed from the many food posts on IBC in recent weeks, I’ve been struggling a bit with my design and creativity muscle lately. Much like my physical muscles, I need to get my butt in gear and start working out.

As in past tours, I will mostly let the pictures do the talking and throw in a few links here and there. If you have any questions, just note them in the comment section below. If you’re looking for paint color sources, everything is listed here. I’m currently working with my graphic designer to improve this list and its functionality, so please stay tuned for that.

Ready? Let’s do this!

Our first stop is the dining room. It looks pretty much the same. I’m still very much in love with the gray and immensely grateful that Nate pushed me to make the change. Last week I shared a few ideas for styling centerpieces for your dining room table if that’s ever a struggle for you.

In the entryway, I installed this DIY coat hook. It came in handy for my mom’s 60th birthday party. I also found that orchids do exceptionally well (when watered) in this space, so I’m totally loving that.

Over in the office, things are looking familiar as well. I’m trying hard to limit the amount of “stuff” I have around. I’m not quite where I want to be, but I’m making progress.

In the living room, I decided to do something new for spring. In the past, there was a lot of color happening in this space. Although I loved that, I’ve pared things down to mostly blue, green, and yellow. Naturally, a few other colors can be seen in the rug and some of the accessories, but for the most part, the color scheme has been refined. I think it’s more cohesive and relaxed.

Strawberry Planter | Inspired by Charm

A couple weeks ago while I was on YouTube, I came across this video from Dzung of Honeysuckle Catering. It was a two-part video in which she and a friend shared tips for planting a cute little strawberry planter and then made strawberry ice cream in a plastic baggie. I mean, what’s not to love.

Fast forward to last week at HomeGoods where I found this beautiful shallow cement pot and thought, “I should make one of those strawberry planters!”

Strawberry Planter | Inspired by Charm

I debated whether to post about this since I’m completely stealing the idea. Planting strawberries in a pot is not a revolutionary concept, but when I questioned if it was post-worthy, a friend asked, “Why wouldn’t it be!?!” So here I am today, showing you the fine art of putting plants into soil.

Strawberry Planter | Inspired by Charm

Can you tell that I’m waiting impatiently for the weather to warm up around here? Monday I taught you how to propagate succulents (and offered a $200 Lowe’s gift card to one lucky IBS reader. If you haven’t already entered to win, don’t forget to do so here.). Now I’m back with more planting.

Strawberry Planter | Inspired by Charm

I just thought this was such a fun way to dive into spring. I’m not sure where this bowl will end up, but I think it will be great outdoors on a table or just tucked in with some of my other plantings. Who knows. I also have this crazy notion to host a strawberry-themed mini party. All things strawberry! So maybe the strawberry pot will come in handy then.

Anyway, check out Dzung’s video for all of the ins and outs of strawberry planting (and the homemade ice cream recipe). The process is pretty simple. In a nutshell: put soil in a bowl, add some strawberry plants, and place the bowil in the sun.

Baked Coconut Chicken Strips | Inspired by Charm

There are certain flavors that remind me of the Caribbean. Coconut, cilantro, lime, and pineapple are a few that immediately come to mind.

As you may know, thanks to my friends at Carnival, last year I had the opportunity to sail the Caribbean with my mom. Stopping at various ports of call was a wonderful way to see a lot of places in the Caribbean. Taking advantage of the various shore excursions allowed us to experience many local activities and flavors.

Baked Coconut Chicken Strips | Inspired by Charm

One of my favorite excursions was “Salsa & Salsa and Margaritas” in Cozumel, Mexico. My mom and I made three different kinds of salsa, drank margaritas, and then learned how to salsa. It was some of the best aspects of that Caribbean island packed into one fun package.

Baked Coconut Chicken Strips | Inspired by Charm

While I’m not teaching you how to make salsa (or dance the salsa), I thought you might enjoy whipping up a dish inspired by the Caribbean – Baked Coconut Chicken Strips.

Baked Coconut Chicken Strips | Inspired by Charm

I’m a huge fan of coconut, whether sweet or savory, and these chicken strips are out-of-this-world-delicious. Baked in the oven, they are much healthier than the traditional fried chicken strips. However, they don’t lack in crunch. A mixture of coconut and panko crumbs give them a nice crunchy exterior.

Baked Coconut Chicken Strips | Inspired by Charm

Baked Coconut Chicken Strips | Inspired by Charm

Paired with homemade creamy honey-pineapple dipping sauce, these strips make a perfect appetizer or a main course for dinner. And, since I love dipping things. I decided to also pair these guys with a store-bought sweet chili sauce. The chicken goes deliciously with either.

Baked Coconut Chicken Strips | Inspired by Charm

Let me walk you through the recipe.

Baked Coconut Chicken Strips | Inspired by Charm

Baked Coconut Chicken Strips

Here's what you will need:

Chicken Strips
1 1/2 - 2 pounds chicken tenderloins
1/2 cup flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon seasoned salt
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
2 eggs
1 tablespoon milk
1 cup panko (Japanese-style breadcrumbs)
1 cup sweetened shredded coconut
1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
Sweet chili sauce, optional

Creamy Honey-Pineapple Dipping Sauce
1/2 cup mayonnaise
1/2 cup crushed pineapple
1 teaspoon fresh cilantro, chopped
1 tablespoon honey
1/2 teaspoon Sriracha sauce
1/2 teaspoon fresh lime juice

Begin by preheating your oven 350 degrees F. Brush a non-stick baking sheet with extra virgin olive oil. Set aside.

Gather three bowls. In one bowl, combine flour, salt, seasoned salt, and black pepper. In the second bowl, whisk together the eggs and milk. In the third bowl, combine the coconut and panko.

Dip a chicken tenderloin into the flour, shaking off any excess, then into the egg mixture, and finally into the coconut and panko mixture. Place the chicken on the baking sheet. Repeat with all of the chicken.

Bake on the middle of the rack for 15-18 minutes or until the chicken is fully cooked. To prevent the coconut from getting to dark while baking, if necessary, lightly cover the baking sheet with aluminum foil.

For the creamy honey-pineapple dipping sauce, whisk together all of the ingredients and serve in a small bowl. An additional store-bought sweet chili sauce can also be served alongside the chicken.

I have this love / hate relationship with plants. I soon as spring arrives, I want to see as much green as possible. I want to get my hands in the dirt and scatter plants everywhere. However, once that is done and I have to water and care for them, I’m not quite as excited about them. Anyone else with me?

Succulents, however, are one plant I can usually take care of since they require little attention. I’ve been anxious to purchase some new ones this year, but the local stores just haven’t been stocked with them. I’m assuming the temperatures have been too cold for shipping.

If you happen to recall, last year I created some succulent garden bowls. Well, this past winter I neglected them for too long and the largest one didn’t make it. (Scratch the above comment about being able to take care of succulents.)

Succulent Propagation | Inspired by Charm

As you can tell, there are a couple survivors, but all in all, the garden bowl is not looking good. I still love these little gardens, so I’m anxious to get new life back into them.

Succulent Propagation | Inspired by Charm

While most succulents aren’t crazy expensive, if you’re doing a lot of planting, the cost can add up. So today I’m going to show you how you can grow succulents from clippings of other succulents. Although this requires a little more time and work, it’s much less expensive. It’s also so easy. And if you love gardening, it’s fun as well. Let me show you.

Succulent Propagation | Inspired by Charm

First, you’ll need cuttings from succulents. You can just trim pieces from your own succulents, a friend’s (ask first), or you can purchase some. I found these on eBay. They were about a $1 per clipping, shipping included. I also used all the healthy pieces that survived from my succulent garden bowls.

Succulent Propagation | Inspired by Charm

Next, round up some soil and containers. I’m using these fancy starter containers I picked up at the store. However, you can use anything you might have on hand. Just make sure the container has good drainage (i.e., a hole in the bottom). Succulents like to stay dry. You can also plant the clipping directly in the container you want the succulent to grow in. I’ll show you that in a second.

Succulent Propagation | Inspired by Charm

For the soil, I like to purchase a bag of cactus / succulent mix. Again, you want something with great drainage. If you have general potting soil, you can mix in some perlite which will help with drainage.

Now, you’re ready to start planting. I like to remove as many of the “leaves” as I can from the piece of stem that will be going into the soil. Place each cutting in the soil with a minimum of one inch of the stem under the ground. This is the part where the roots will form.

Succulent Propagation | Inspired by Charm

Once all of your cuttings are planted, do not water for the first week. Just put them in an area with full sun to part shade and let them do their thing. After the first week, water as needed. The plants should start to root within one to two weeks.

That’s it! As your plants begin to grow, you can prune them back or take more cuttings to make even more new plants!

Succulent Propagation | Inspired by Charm

As I mentioned earlier, you can also plant right into a pot. I picked up this cute pot and thought it would be perfect for one of the taller succulents.

Since this pot has no drainage holes, I put plenty of stones in a layer on the bottom to give any excess water a place to sit. After that, I planted the same way as I did the other succulents.

spring sangria

Rosé Sangria:

Well friends, another week is almost over. The way I look at it, we’re one week closer to summer.

And speaking of summer, there’s nothing I love more than chilling out on the weekend with the sun shining, my shades on, and a big ol’ glass of sangria in my hand. In this case, Rosé Sangria!

The perfect Rosé Sangria cocktail recipe for summer entertaining! #rose #sangria

A couple years ago I shared my recipe for Sangria Tinto. It’s my go-to sangria recipe. However, every once in a while I like to mix things up and try something different.

Sangria Rosé | Inspired by Charm

As you may know, Sangria Tinto is made with red wine. I don’t think it’s fair to leave the other wine varieties out of the party, so today I’m sharing my recipe for Sangria Rosé.

The perfect Rosé Sangria cocktail recipe for summer entertaining! #rose #sangria

I think this particular Rosé Sangria recipe is perfect for the warmer months. It’s light and fresh and bursting with flavor thanks to fresh berries and citrus.

I’m not sure what it is, but there’s something I find so delicious and comforting about sangria. It’s casual, yet fancy and complex. Plus, other than cutting up some fruit, it’s a breeze to make and still looks like a million bucks. Don’t you agree?

Anyway, let’s keep today’s post short and sweet. Here’s the recipe. Go mix up a batch and have yourself a fabulous weekend.

Frosted Lemon Cookies | Inspired by Charm

Has anyone ever mentioned a food or flavor to you and then no matter how hard you try, you can’t get it out of your mind? If you have something to eat, regardless of how wonderful that food is, it just can’t compare with the flavor or taste of that one thing the person mentioned.

This, friends, is the story of my life.

Frosted Lemon Cookies | Inspired by Charm

Earlier this week a friend told me he was making lemon cookies. (Yes, the same friend who made the Brussels sprouts. – I’m starting to think he’s my muse.) You guessed it. I haven’t for the life of me been able to get lemon cookies out of my brain.

So yesterday morning I made lemon cookies. Consider my lemon-cookie-craving satisfied.

Frosted Lemon Cookies | Inspired by Charm

Frosted Lemon Cookies | Inspired by Charm

While I love a plain ol’ lemon sugar cookie, I decided to amp these up a bit with a lemon cream cheese frosting. (This is like the spring version of my fall frosted pumpkin cookies.) This worked out perfectly because my friends over at KRAFT challenged me to Twist That Dish!

Challenge accepted.

Frosted Lemon Cookies | Inspired by Charm

Making a lemon cream cheese frosting was a no brainer and super simple. Cream cheese frosting is one of my favorites, so adding a touch of lemon to it could only make it that much better. Tart and tangy go beautifully together.

Plus, PHILADELPHIA Cream Cheese is an ingredient I always seems to have on hand. Whether I’m just smearing it on a bagel, whipping up my stuffed jalapeño peppers, or making some cherry cream cheese bars, it always finds its way into my recipes. So much so that buying it in bulk at Sam’s Club may be a smart move. Speaking of Sam’s Club, be sure to swing by samsclub.com/kraftrecipes and check out their clever ideas. I’m so making their Easy Taco Bake.

Anyway, back to cookies. I just love this recipe. The combination of tangy, sweet, and citrus is perfectly balanced. None of the elements fight for the center of flavor attention. They just work together beautifully

Frosted Lemon Cookies | Inspired by Charm

The actual cookie is delicious, too. It has a slightly crunchy exterior with a soft center. That’s cookie perfection, friends.

Enough talk. Let’s whip up a batch.

Frosted Lemon Cookies | Inspired by Charm

Frosted Lemon Cookies

Makes 3-4 dozen cookies.

Cookies:
2 1/2 cups flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 cup butter, softened
1/2 cup vegetable shortening, softened
1 cup sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 egg
1 tablespoon lemon zest
1 tablespoon milk
1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice

Frosting:
8 ounces PHILADELPHIA Cream Cheese, softened
1/2 cup butter, softened
1 teaspoon vanilla
3 1/2 cups confectioner's sugar
4 - 5 teaspoons fresh lemon juice
Pinch of salt

Begin by preheating your oven to 350 degrees F.

In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, salt, and baking soda. Set aside.

In the bowl of an electric mixer, beat together the butter, vegetable shortening, and sugar until light and fluffy (about five minutes). Then, mix in the vanilla, egg, and lemon zest.

Add the dry ingredients to the mixture and begin to combine. Then add the milk and lemon juice. Mix until just incorporated.

Roll the dough into one-inch sized balls and place on an ungreased baking sheet. Flatten the balls with your hand. Baked for 10-12 minutes or until the cookies just begin to brown. Remove from the oven and allow to cool before frosting.

In the meantime, mix up the frosting. Beat the butter and cream cheese together until smooth. Add the vanilla and a pinch of salt. Next, slowly begin to incorporate the confectioner's sugar with the mixer on low. Then, add the fresh lemon juice, one teaspoon at a time, until you reach the desired consistency.

Spring Table Styling Ideas | Inspired by Charm

A couple months ago, I received a request for ways to style a dining room table when it’s not in use. I believe the specific comment was about what to use during the winter months after the holidays. Clearly, I’m a bit behind, but the ideas I’m going to share with you will work anytime of the year just by changing a few pieces.

I’m sorry I don’t remember who asked this question, but thank you so much. I absolutely love being a “creative” person, but there are times when I get a creative block. Your comments, questions, and suggestions truly help to get my brain turning again. In fact, I’ve been thinking about doing this post ever since I read that comment. I’m finally getting around to it. So if you don’t mind a slight delay (I’ll try to be better in the future,) please feel free to ask questions in the comments. I really do my best to answer them.

Spring Table Styling Ideas | Inspired by Charm

OK, on with the post. Today I want to share four simple spring table styling ideas. These are quick things you can do to create a stylish table using things you might have around your house. In fact, other than the flowers, I pulled all of the accessories from around my house.

I have used each of these ideas (or variations of them) on my own table at one point or another. I realize that not all of the options (or maybe even none of them) will suit you. However, I hope they spark some inspiration if you struggle with what to put on your table. Let’s dive in.

Option 1: Statement Piece

This first idea is super simple. One large piece, right in the center of the table. I like to use something that’s pretty sizable. I also like to use something that’s fairly unique and interesting.

Spring Table Styling Ideas | Inspired by Charm

A fish-shaped container planted with aloe is pretty interesting in my book. Using a natural element (e.g., the aloe plant) is always a great idea for the table. (You’ll actually see that repeated in all of these options.)

Spring Table Styling Ideas | Inspired by Charm

Obviously, this is minimalist decorating. If you wanted something more, a runner could be added under the planter.

Option 2: Flowers

Especially with April just around the corner, flowers are a great option for the table. Because I think one single arrangement in the middle of the table is predictable and boring, I went with three arrangements. I just threw them together with flowers from the grocery store.

Spring Table Styling Ideas | Inspired by Charm

There’s no need for fancy vases, either. I have a small collection of vintage mason jars, and they make great vases. Lined up on the table, they add life, color, and sparkle.

Spring Table Styling Ideas | Inspired by Charm

Here, I’m showing you the vases on a runner.

Spring Table Styling Ideas | Inspired by Charm

dining table decor idea

While they look fine without, I personally prefer the runner because it grounds the arrangements. It also adds a brightness and softness to my wood table.

Option 3: Collection

Last fall I got this collection of brass bowls and they have quickly become some of my favorite decorating accessories. Grouped together, they create a striking display. But have no fear, you don’t need a collection of brass bowls; three cakes stands, three white ceramic bowls, etc will serve the same purpose.

Spring Table Styling Ideas | Inspired by Charm

I like to fill two of the bowls and leave one empty. In this case, an orchid adds height, a touch of nature, and a pop of color. In the smaller bowl, some colorful chocolate eggs are appropriate for the season and a tasty little treat, too.

Spring Table Styling Ideas | Inspired by Charm

Again, you can try this with or without a runner.

Spring Table Styling Ideas | Inspired by Charm

And speaking of runners, you may be wondering about the proper length. I prefer runners to cover almost the full length of the table or hang off 4-6 inches on each end.

Option 4: A Tray

As I showed you a couple years ago when styling fall centerpieces, I’m partial to using a tray to contain a table display. This way, if you use your table daily, it’s easy to take the centerpiece off when needed.

Spring Table Styling Ideas | Inspired by Charm

Here, I actually have a few options to show you. First, to keep things from getting too crazy, I like to stick with three main items.

Spring Table Styling Ideas | Inspired by CharmSpring Table Styling Ideas | Inspired by Charm

In this case, we have a vase, a bowl, and a pair of salt and pepper shakers. For the vase, I tucked in some silver dollar eucalyptus (which I’m loving these days). For $3, it adds life, height, and movement. A few apples in a bowl add color and make it easy to grab a healthy snack.

Spring Table Styling Ideas | Inspired by Charm

Same tray done another way. A vase of flowers, a set of candles and a different bowl (same apples). Again, you don’t need these specific items. If you like this option, just arrange items you have to achieve a similar look .

Bonus Option: Tray Spillover

Recently, I’ve been trying to cut back a bit on clutter and over-designing. As you can see, all of the options above are simple yet effective. However, if you love your things and are craving a little more, give this bonus option a go.

Spring Table Styling Ideas | Inspired by Charm

Start with the tray, as I mentioned above. Then add a few coordinating accessories just outside of it. As this example shows, a stack of small appetizer plates and a candlestick work well. While I wouldn’t call this cluttered or “too much,” it does give a sense of abundance for those who like a little more.

Spring Table Styling Ideas | Inspired by Charm

I hope these ideas are helpful and inspire you to try something different on your table. What’s on your dining room table this time of year?

If you do try any of these options, I’d love to see your creations. Please share them with me on Instagram using the hashtag #myIBC.

Roasted Balsamic Brussels Sprouts | Inspired by Charm

These tasty Roasted Balsamic Brussels Sprouts are the perfect side dish for any meal. Everyone will love these flavor-packed bites of goodness.

It’s kind of weird to be starting off the week with a post about Roasted Balsamic Brussels Sprouts. But then again, if you love Brussels sprouts as much as I do, maybe it’s not so weird.

Roasted Balsamic Brussels Sprouts | Inspired by Charm

When I was in California a few weeks ago (a recap post on that trip is coming soon), I fell in love with these tasty mini-cabbage-like-balls-of-goodness all over again. I actually ate them twice in the span of a few days.

Since then, I’ve been looking for a reason to make them. Yesterday, a good friend of mine made them and shared a picture with me, and that sealed the deal. I HAD to make them.

Roasted Balsamic Brussels Sprouts:

How d0 I make Brussels Sprouts tasty?

Now, if you think you’re not a fan of Brussels spouts, I totally get it. Growing up, I wasn’t either. However, either my tastes changed or Brussels sprouts have come a long way in the past few years.

If you haven’t tasted them in a while or made them yourself, you should really give them a try. Start with this recipe, and if you still don’t like them, then maybe they’re just not the veggie for you.

This particular recipe is so simple to make. In my opinion roasting these little guys in the oven is the best way to prepare them. In fact, I don’t care for them boiled or steamed.

Roasting Brussel sprouts keeps them crisp and crunchy. Yum!

Roasted Balsamic Brussels Sprouts | Inspired by Charm

How to make Roasted Balsamic Brussels Sprouts:

Simply roasted with olive oil, salt and pepper; they brown up so nicely, allowing the flavor to truly shine.

Plus, the little leaves that fall off are probably my favorite. They turn brown and crispy; almost like Brussels sprout chips.

Still warm right out of the oven, a drizzle of balsamic glaze (a thickened balsamic vinegar) and some freshly grated Parmesan cheese are all these bite-sized balls of yumminess need.

Roasted Balsamic Brussels Sprouts | Inspired by Charm

Have I convinced you that Brussels sprouts are delicious and not so weird on a Monday?

I’ll take that as a yes. Check out the recipe below.

Cinnamon Roll Skillet Bread | Inspired by Charm

Cinnamon and sugar get me every time. The combination of the two (with maybe just a little butter) has always been one of my favorites. This love affair started a long time ago.

Cinnamon Roll Skillet Bread | Inspired by Charm

When I was growing up, my paternal grandmother made these cinnamon rolls that would knock your socks off. They were without a doubt one of the best things I’ve ever eaten. That was over 20 years ago, and I can still taste them. Sadly though, the recipe died with her. And surprisingly enough, I’m kind of okay with it. I think those cinnamon rolls and that recipe were meant just for that special moment in time. I’m also grateful for the fact that her cinnamon rolls started a quest for me to taste and create as many cinnamon-and-sugar-based recipes as I could to mimic that unforgettable flavor. I have yet to succeed, but I’m sure having fun with all of my attempts.

Today’s recipe, Cinnamon Roll Skillet Bread, leads me back to A Year of the Skillet. I’ve been waiting to make a large skillet-style cinnamon roll for quite some time, so I was thrilled when I found this recipe from Seasons & Suppers. Thanks for the inspiration and recipe, Jennifer!

cinnamon sugar bread skillet

I changed the recipe slightly and because of the size of the dough, used a much larger skillet. I recommend a 12-inch skillet, although you can probably get away with a 10-inch.

a year of the skillet cinnamon bread

I also enjoyed this recipe because it involved yeast and making dough. I was once intimidated with yeast, but after spending a year working with it, I’ve come to appreciate bread making and how delicious homemade bread can be. While time consuming, it’s always worth it and so rewarding.

Anyway, I was super pleased with this recipe. If you celebrate Easter or are hosting a breakfast / brunch soon, this beauty would be perfect. Give me a chunk of this and a big cup of coffee and I’m set. Talk about an awesome way to start your day. Plus, your house will have a delightful smell when this bad boy is baking. Yum!

Cinnamon Roll Skillet Bread | Inspired by Charm

Cinnamon Roll Skillet Bread

Here's what you will need:

For the dough:
3 cups all-purpose flour
4 tablespoons sugar
2 teaspoons salt
3 teaspoon instant yeast
1/4 cup water, warmed to 105-110 degrees F
1 cup milk, warmed to 105-110 degrees F
3 tablespoons butter, melted

For coating the dough:
1/2 cup butter, melted
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
3/4 cup brown sugar
1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon

For the streusel topping:
1/4 cup brown sugar
1 teaspoons cinnamon
1 tablespoon butter, cold

For the glaze:
2 cups confectioner's sugar
1/4 cup milk
1/4 cup butter, melted
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/4 teaspoon salt

Begin by making your dough. In a small bowl, mix together the yeast and warm water. (This mixture should bubble. That's how you know the yeast is active.) In the meantime, in a bowl of a stand mixer equipped with a dough hook, combine the flour, sugar, and salt. Then add the warmed milk, melted butter and proofed yeast. Knead with the dough hook until smooth. Add more flour if the dough is feeling too sticky. Remove the dough and place it in a lightly oiled bowl. Cover with plastic wrap, then a towel, and let it rise until it's doubled in size (about an hour).

Grease a 12-inch skillet and set aside.

For the coating: in a small bowl, combine the melted butter and and vanilla. In another small bowl, mix together the brown sugar and cinnamon. Next, divide the dough into two pieces and roll each piece into a rope about 3 feet long. Place the dough on a piece of parchment paper. Liberally brush with the melted butter and vanilla mixture, making sure to cover all sides of the dough. Once buttered, coat all sides of the dough with the brown sugar and cinnamon mixture.

Then, pinch the ends of the ropes together and twist them together. Pinch the other ends once twisted.

Starting in the center of your skillet, place the twisted dough inside and wind it around. If you have any extra butter from the brushing, drizzle it over the dough. Cover the skillet with plastic wrap and let the dough rise until doubled in size (about an hour).

In the meantime, prepare the streusel topping. Combine the brown sugar and cinnamon in a small bowl. Then, using a fork or pastry cutter, cut in the cold butter. Set aside.

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F. Once the dough is doubled, sprinkle with the streusel topping and bake for 40-45 minutes. If you notice that your bread is getting too dark, lightly cover it with a piece of aluminum foil. Remove from oven and allow to cool slightly.

Prepare the glaze by whisking together the confectioner's sugar, milk, melted butter, vanilla, and salt. Stir until smooth, adding more milk if necessary to achieve the desired consistency. Pour evenly over slightly cooled bread.

I have a bad habit of leaving clothes lying about in my bedroom. It’s not the stereotypical messy-clothes-strewn-everywhere scene, but I can almost guarantee there’ll be a stray t-shirt on the floor, a crumpled pair of jeans in the corner, or a hoodie on the dresser. One reason is that I’m usually in a hurry when I get dressed or go to bed. Another reason is that I don’t really have a place to put clothes I’ve worn that aren’t really dirty. And while time management is definitely something I need to work on, it’s not something I can fix in an afternoon. So, today I’m going to tackle part two of the problem and show you how to DIY some birch hooks.

DIY Birch Hooks | Inspired by Charm

When I was in Michaels recently, I happened upon these birch wood pieces. I thought they would make sturdy and unique hooks for clothes. With a little DIY muscle, they ended up working perfectly in my closet. Let me show you what I did.

DIY Birch Hooks | Inspired by Charm

DIY Birch Hooks

Here’s what you will need:
birch wood – slabs, sticks, branches, etc.
wood glue
double threaded coach screws
electric drill and drill bits
pencil
paper
scissors

First, get the birch wood. As I said, I purchased mine, but if you have access to free wood in your own backyard, go for it. In addition to the pieces I picked up at the craft store. I also had a couple birch branches that I cut into 1 – 2-inch pieces. If you don’t have a branch, a thick dowel rod or spare piece of wood will work fine.

DIY Birch Hooks | Inspired by Charm

For the larger slabs of wood, I used wood glue to attach my cut piece of birch branch to the back. Then I let it dry.

DIY Birch Hooks | Inspired by Charm

DIY Birch Hooks | Inspired by Charm

Next, you’ll want to put the double threaded screws in the wall. You will use these screws to attached your birch hooks to the wall.

DIY Birch Hooks | Inspired by Charm

Begin by drilling a hole in the back of your birch wood with a drill and bit. The bit should be slightly smaller in diameter than the diameter of your screw. Drill in far enough so that when you insert the screw, only the threaded end that will go into the wall is still showing.

DIY Birch Hooks | Inspired by Charm

Next, use pliers to screw the non-pointed end into your birch wood. Repeat with each of your birch pieces.

DIY Birch Hooks | Inspired by Charm

Once complete, you’re ready to attach them to the wall. For placement on the wall, trace each wood slab onto a piece of paper with a pencil and cut it out. This will allow you to get the pattern you’d like on your wall without struggling to hold the wood pieces in place.

Then, using a drill, screw into the center of each paper to mark a hole for each birch hook. Depending on your wall surface you may need to hammer in a wall anchor before screwing in the hooks (especially if you’re putting these hooks into drywall). My walls are plaster and lath, so they tend to hold screws quite well.

Now, screw your hooks into the wall, and the project is complete.

As you can see, these hooks work great. I really like the shape of them as clothes drape on them nicely. You don’t get any of those weird bumps in your shirts like you would with a standard clothes hook.

Things like belts and ties also stay on them very well.

I need a bench of some sort below the hooks. I played around with a few things I had on hand, but nothing seemed to be the right size or color. I’m thinking this stool from Target could work out perfectly.

I hope this will help keep me a little more organized and tidy. Do you have a place in your home that could benefit from some DIY Birch Hooks?

Oh, one more thing. As much as I love these hooks in their natural state, I might paint the face of them. Maybe just some of them? Maybe just half of each face (on a diagonal)? Maybe even gold leaf? I’m not sure. What do you think? Do they need a little something-something or do you like them as they are?

I hope you enjoyed this DIY project. Meet you back here tomorrow.

One reason is that I’m usually in a hurry […]

Jam Cocktail | Inspired by Charm

Here in Pennsylvania it’s always exciting when we spot the first robin of spring. It’s such a big deal that it usually makes the front page of the local paper. I guess that distinctive songbird is nature/s way of telling us that winter is almost over.

I’m thrilled to report that I spotted my first robin of the year yesterday on my run. This morning I saw another robin outside my kitchen window. While those robins are a sure sign of spring, I’m also taking them as a sign from the universe that warmer and brighter days are ahead, both physically and mentally. (At this point I’ll take any signs I can get.)

So to celebrate the arrival of spring, I thought a cocktail was in order.

The drink I’ve chosen is a Jam Cocktail. This fresh and bright libation brings together all the flavors of sunny days but requires no fresh fruit. Since I had some fresh berries on hand, I did throw them in as a garnish. However, they aren’t essential to the success of the cocktail.

Anywho, this drink comes together with a clear spirit (I used gin in one recipe and vodka in the other.), lemon juice, and your favorite jam or jelly. A little simple syrup is thrown into the mix for added sweetness.

I’m showing you two variations below to get you inspired. However, you can use any combination of jam and clear spirit that you like. You can also make this a mocktail by replacing the gin or vodka with club soda or lemon-lime soda.

Typically for this cocktail, the jam is shaken with the rest of the ingredients, but I opted to add it as a finishing touch, just slightly stirring it with a straw. I love the unique effect it gives the drink.

Garnished with fresh herbs, this cocktail is announcing spring, much like that robin did on my run yesterday. Okay, time for a drink.
