This is sort of a special day since it’s my Holiday Home Tour!  It’s always a fun post to create because I get to walk you through my home and show you what my Christmas Home Decor.

It’s Day 4 of the 12 Days of Christmas! Welcome back, everyone.

Holiday Home Tour | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

For this particular tour, I’m joining up with The White Buffalo Stylin’ Co.’s Blogger Stylin’ Home Tours. Today marks the final day of this tour. If you’d like, you can click here to start from the beginning to see all of the bloggers’ homes and their Christmas home decor. There are over 30 bloggers participating! The previous stop on the tour was the uber-talented Craftberry Bush. If you’re joining from there, welcome! If you missed her post, be sure to click back and check it out here.

Per usual, I’m going to let the pictures do most of the talking and chime in a bit here and there. Let’s go!

Christmas Home Decor – Living Room

Yesterday I shared my tutorial for the wood stockings on my mantel, so let’s start in the living room.

This year I decided to limit my colors in each space of my home. In the living room I’m using teal, green, and black.

Holiday Home Tour | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

I also love decorating with glass ornaments. HomeGoods is one of my go-to places for finding great ornaments at the best prices. These bottle brush trees from Target couldn’t have worked out better for this space.

If you’ve been on any of my other home tours, you’ll notice I picked up new poufs. I wanted to pull some of the yellow out of this room and add a bit of cozy texture for the winter. I also found some new pillows at HomeGoods.

And yes, my marshmallow wreath lives on. I had to replace a few marshmallows, but other than that, it’s in great shape. It’s still one of my favorite Christmas home decor items!

Christmas Home Decor – Office

Over in the office, red and pink were my colors of choice. They nicely matched my filing cabinets.

You’ll also notice a big change in this space. I swapped out my workbench for a small table. I’ll talk more about my decision in another post, but I’m loving the change. (I do have different chairs coming for this table, however, they were delayed, so I’m making do for now. Ha! A blogger’s gotta do what a blogger’s gotta do.)

I “need” to have more than one tree in my house, so I dressed this one up with with ornaments in a gradient from red to pink.

Near my pink dresser is the new Elf print from Lindsay Letters. You all know Lindsay, right? She has the best prints, canvas artwork, and other fun accessories! She’s the bomb. I actually have a few more of her pieces upstairs. I’ll be showing you those next week.

Christmas Home Decor – Entryway

Holiday Home Tour | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

Holiday Home Tour | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

In the foyer, I have Christmas tree #3. This one’s real, and I decorated it with these tiny glass balls in every color. Then, I added on some falling cat ornaments because they may be the best ornaments ever. Also, who doesn’t want cats falling from their tree?

Holiday Home Tour | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

Oh, I should also mention that I painted my entryway. Again! I wasn’t feeling the gray so it had to go. More on that in a later post.

And there’s another Elf print! Son of a nutcracker!

You already had a sneak peek in my dining room Christmas home decor earlier this week when I shared my Gold and Green Tree. (You can see more of this tree here.) Now it’s time for a closer look.

I put together a super simple centerpiece using a variety of trees. Lots of bottle brush trees, plus, one of my favorite Christmas crafts – the colorful wooden trees I created a few years back.

Grab your jigsaw and safety glasses. It’s Day 3 of the 12 Days of Christmas here on IBC.

From baking to decorating to sawdust making, I’m covering it all this holiday season. Today we are breaking out the power tools to create a unique, yet truly festive addition to your holiday mantel.

DIY Wood Stockings | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

In years past, I’ve seen fellow bloggers and designers use vintage wood sock forms as “stockings” to adorn their fireplaces. I always loved how those looked. So I did some digging and found a few wood sock forms on online. Unfortunately they cost more than I wanted to spend. They also didn’t quite have the look I was after. I was disappointed, but decided to use this bump in the road as a DIY challenge.

I’d never used a jigsaw before, but I figured, why not make my own “vintage” sock forms. And that’s what I did.

DIY Wood Stockings | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

Pretty cool and authentic looking, right?

I couldn’t be happier with how they turned out. After a quick trip to Lowe’s to buy my tools and supplies, I had a totally unique and personal way to decorate my fireplace for Christmas.

DIY Wood Stockings | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

Because my Holiday Home Tour hasn’t happened yet (It goes live tomorrow.), I’m trying not to reveal my entire mantel / living room decor. However, what I love most about these DIY Wood Stockings is the vintage element they add to the space. They also feel right at home with my wood floors and wood topped coffee table.

In case you’re interested in making your own wood stockings, I thought I’d walk you through the steps I followed.

DIY Wood Stockings | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

First, here’s what you will need:
1″ x 12″ x 4′ pine boards
Jigsaw
Orbital sander
Drill and drill bit
Wood stain (I used Minwax Provincial.)
Finishing wax
Cotton rags
Latex gloves
Twine
Pencil
Safety glasses

Let’s get started.

DIY Wood Stockings | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

Using a pencil, draw your sock forms onto the wood. I just freehanded mine. Model your stockings after mine or search for images of vintage sock forms online. My stockings range in length from 15 to 26 inches. (Also, once you have a couple cut out, you can trace them onto another board to create more. That’s what I did. I varied the tracing slightly so they were all a bit different.)

DIY Wood Stockings | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

Next, with your jigsaw, cut out the stockings. (Please follow all of the safety precautions listed in the operation manual of your particular jigsaw.)

Now drill a hole in the top of each stocking about 1 1/2 inches from the top. (You’ll use this hole to hang your finished stocking.)

DIY Wood Stockings | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

Once your forms are cut and drilled, use an orbital sander to remove any pencil lines and smooth the edges. I sanded my edges so they had a softer, rounded look. Remove all dust after sanding.

DIY Wood Stockings | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

Now it’s time to stain. Wearing a pair of latex gloves, apply the stain to the wood using a lint-free cotton rag. Wipe off any excess. Allow the stain to dry completely.

DIY Wood Stockings | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

The next step is sealing your project with a finishing wax. Again with gloved hands, use a lint-free cotton rag and work the finishing wax into the wood in a circular motion. Wipe off any excess wax with a rag. Allow the wax to dry completely. Overnight is best.

DIY Wood Stockings | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

Finally, run some twine or string through the hole you drilled earlier, and your new “vintage” stocking is ready to hang.

DIY Wood Stockings | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

I used small gold hooks drilled into the bottom of my mantel to hang my wood stockings. However, you can use whatever method works best for you.

DIY Wood Stockings | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

A few more things about the stockings:

I decided to use stain because I was going for a rustic vintage feel. However, if you want a crisp, bold look, you could certainly paint the sock forms.

Also, you don’t need a mantel to hang these. I think one of these wood socks would look great hanging from a coat hook, banister, or even a dresser or bookcase. The options are endless.

DIY Wood Stockings | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

Regardless of how you choose to display your stockings, this is a fun project that’s great for a beginning woodworker / DIYer.

DIY Wood Stockings | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

I hope you enjoyed this project as much as I did. Please join me back here tomorrow as I show you around my home for my second annual Holiday Home Tour. See you then!

Happy Holidays and welcome to the 12 Days of Christmas 2015! I am so excited to be bringing this series back to Inspired by Charm. I have lots of fun ideas to share with you over the next 12 days! First up, my Gold and Green Christmas Tree.

Coming up with a new theme for my Christmas tree is probably one of my favorite things to do each holiday season. So, I thought sharing this year’s tree would be a great way to kick off the 12 Days series!

Gold and Green Tree | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

I actually had a tough time deciding on my 2015 theme. I tossed around a few ideas, but ultimately, Adele made the decision for me. Yep, THE Adele.

Gold and Green Christmas Tree:

Okay. Okay. She didn’t actually tell me what to do, but she definitely helped to solidify my decision. Let me explain. First, I knew that I wanted to use the Frozen Fur Flocked tree from Treetopia’s new collection. As in past years, Treetopia was super kind and sent me a new tree to work my magic on for their Holiday Tree Council. As soon as I saw the Frozen Fur, I was in love. It’s a slim white tree with white lights AND it’s flocked. Gorgeous, right?

Once I had the tree, I needed to figure out what to put on it. I had a few preliminary thoughts, but nothing felt right. After talking with a friend, I decided that gold and green could be something fun and different. As much as I like a more traditional tree, I also enjoy mixing things up a bit.

However, I still wasn’t confident in my decision. That was until Adele came into the picture. Following news of her latest album, a preview of Adele: Live at the BBC popped up on YouTube.

Gold and Green Tree | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

If you aren’t aware, I’m a HUGE Adele fan. (Btw, wasn’t this hilarious!?) In the preview, she walks out on stage wearing a gold and green dress. Talk about an A-ha Moment! I took it as a big ol’ sign to move forward with my decision. Thus, my gold and green tree was born.

Gold and Green Tree | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

Thanks, Adele!

Gold and Green Tree | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

Gold and Green Tree | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

It’s certainly not traditional, but I am thrilled with my tree. With the existing colors in the dining room (and help from my new rug), the tree fits in perfectly.

Gold and Green Tree | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

I have a huge collection of glass ornaments, some vintage and some new, so that’s where I started. Actually, I began with a gold ribbon I picked up at Michael’s; then I moved onto the ornaments.

Gold and Green Tree | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

How to Decorate a Gold and Green Christmas Tree:

I used a variety of gold and green hues to give the tree a collected-over-time look. You’ll even see a touch of blue and orange in the mix. I really loaded the tree with ornaments. I even tucked dozens deep into the branches and hung others on the tips of the branches.

Gold and Green Tree | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

Although I could have limited it to colored glass balls, I decided to add more interest with a few different kinds of ornaments. I picked up some ornaments at Michael’s including the gems and the translucent gold ornaments.

I also love shopping the ornament selection at HomeGoods. I’m always surprised that the beautiful selection that have at really great prices. They certainly make me #HomeGoodsHappy!

The long thin ornaments also came from H&M. (In case you’re not aware, H&M has super cute home decor items at great prices.)

Gold and Green Tree | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

Gold and Green Tree | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

For the tree topper, this star from West Elm was the crowning jewel. To tie it into the rest of the tree, I added the matching ornaments.

Gold and Green Tree | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

For the tree skirt, white faux fur was the perfect choice. (It goes nicely with another element in the dining room. I’ll be sharing more of the space on Friday in my Holiday Home Tour.)

Gold and Green Tree | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

Gold and Green Tree | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

Isn’t it pretty?

I especially like this tree with the lights off. However, it’s is a stunner with the lights on as well.

Gold and Green Tree | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

Who would have thought Adele would inspire a Christmas tree? Inspiration can come from the most unexpected places.

Gold and Green Tree | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

I hope you like this tree as much as I do.

I hope you enjoyed my 2015 Christmas Tree. Stay tuned for more ideas and giveaways as IBC’s 12 Days of Christmas continues. Tomorrow I’ll be sharing a sweet treat!

I love a delicious dessert cocktail. A few weeks ago when I was at an event, we mixed up some Pumpkin Milkshakes. They were the bomb.com and gave me an idea for a cocktail recipe.

My thought: Why not combine a pumpkin milkshake and a pumpkin pie martini to create a Frozen Pumpkin Pie Martini? And so I did.

Frozen Pumpkin Pie Martini | inspiredbycharm.com

With Thanksgiving only a couple weeks away, this recipe couldn’t come at a better time. Not only is it a cold and sweet libation, but it is also a joy to share and enjoy during quiet moments with loved ones.

This year, I’ve teamed up with Reddi-wip to share recipes and Share The Joy. For me, creating cocktails and entertaining friends and family are such joyful experiences, and I’m delighted when I can pass on that joy to others. When you feel joy and share that feeling with someone else, the world becomes an even more beautiful place.

Frozen Pumpkin Pie Martini | inspiredbycharm.com

Sipping one of these Frozen Pumpkin Pie Martinis helps with the joy, too. So whip up a batch, invite your friends over, and celebrate the bounty of the harvest season. Joy is intensified when it is shared with others.

You may be wondering what makes this cocktail so exceptional. Well, first, it’s garnished with graham cracker crumbs. That little crunch resembles the crust of the pumpkin pie.

Frozen Pumpkin Pie Martini | inspiredbycharm.com

Secondly, there’s ice cream in this cocktail. That’s the frozen part of this concoction. It also adds a delightfully creamy texture to the drink.

Frozen Pumpkin Pie Martini | inspiredbycharm.com

Pumpkin puree and spices give this martini a traditional pumpkin pie flavor.

Frozen Pumpkin Pie Martini | inspiredbycharm.com

Finally, this cocktail is topped up with a generous squeeze of Reddi-wip and sprinkled with cinnamon for a perfect finishing touch.

Frozen Pumpkin Pie Martini | inspiredbycharm.com

Frozen Pumpkin Pie Martini

Makes 2 cocktails

1/2 cup vanilla ice cream
1/4 cup pumpkin puree
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
1/4 cup vanilla vodka
1/4 cup white chocolate liqueur
1/4 cup half & half
Honey and graham cracker crumbs for glass rim
Reddi-wip and cinnamon for garnish

Begin with two shallow dishes in place. To one, add a tablespoon of honey. To the other, add the graham cracker crumbs. Rim the edge of each martini glass first with honey and then in the graham cracker crumbs. Set aside.

In a blender, add the ice cream, pumpkin puree, cinnamon, pumpkin pie spice, vodka, chocolate liqueur, and half & half. Blend to combine. Pour into your prepared martini glasses.

Top with Reddi--wip and a sprinkle of cinnamon.

Pretty decadent, don’t you think? If you love anything pumpkin spiced, you need to give this recipe a try.

How to Make Cheddar Bacon Ranch Tortilla Pinwheels:

Here, I’m changing up the classic recipe by boosting the flavor with both Hidden Valley Ranch and thick-cut bacon. Fresh herbs add even more flavor.

As you’ll see in the recipe below, all of the ingredients are mixed together and spread on tortillas. The tortillas then get rolled up.

Learn how to make these beautiful and stylish gold foil napkins!

About a month ago, I packed up my little suitcase plus a larger one full of dinnerware and crafting supplies (I’ll explain in a minute.) and headed off to Boston.

As I’ve mentioned here on IBC, I was invited by my friends at Wayfair to be an Ambassador for their first ever Heart Home Conference. (Um, where does the time go. I’m so sorry it took me this long to write this post.) This conference was designed for anyone who has a passion for home decor. It was a two-day event comprised of numerous sessions focused on new design trends, how to master the art of creating video content, and other decorating-related topics. There were also wonderful brands, including all of the subdivisions of Wayfair: Birch Lane, AllModern, Joss & Main, and DwellStudio. And, as if it couldn’t get any more exciting, on the last day of the conference, bloggers like myself taught some DIY classes.

Heart Home | inspiredbycharm.com
The 48-hour adventure was a blast and incredibly informative. It was so nice to participate in a conference that focused on design of the home. While plans aren’t firm for next year, I’m keeping my fingers crossed that I will be invited again.

DIY Gold Foil Napkins:

I happened to be one of the lucky folks who was selected to teach a DIY class. I was paired up with the fabulous and talented Jen of City Farmhouse. Our class was titled Dueling DIYs. Our “weapons” of choice were napkins. We each brought our personal style to life by coming up with unique ways to embellish a standard napkin.

Jen opted to create a Dipped Watercolor Napkin. You can check out her napkins here along with a full tutorial on how to make them. I decided to bring on the bling and make Gold Foil Napkins.

DIY Gold Foil Napkins | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

Pretty fabulous, right?

With the holidays fast approaching, I thought today was the perfect time to teach you how to DIY these napkins. They are so simple to do, and they will add sparkle to your holiday table, be it for Thanksgiving, Christmas, or New Year’s.

thanksgiving napkin diy

(Speaking of Thanksgiving tables, you can find the tutorial for this fun color wrapped wheat here. I used the wheat here to dress up a plate, but in the tutorial, I also show you how to make it into a centerpiece.)

What makes this project so easy is the metallic transfer sheets and liquid adhesive. In a nutshell, you apply the liquid adhesive and let it set. Then you apply and remove the sheets.

You can create any pattern or design you can dream up. From stripes to brushstrokes to dots, the options are endless.

DIY Gold Foil Napkins | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

DIY Gold Foil Napkins | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

The foil transfer sheets come in a variety of colors and can be found on Amazon (links below). I chose gold and rose gold. For this project, I used the Deco Foil Liquid Adhesive. Through some experimentation, I found that there are two versions of this “glue.” You want Liquid Adhesive which is no-iron. (Just be sure to check the packaging before you begin.)

Let me walk you through the tutorial.

How to make DIY Gold Foil Napkins:

For this project, you will need:

Deco Foil Liquid Adhesive
Deco Foil Metallic Transfer Sheets (gold or rose gold)
Napkins
Paint Brush

DIY Gold Foil Napkins | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

Begin with a smooth, ironed napkin.

Next, apply the liquid adhesive with a paint brush. As I said above, you can paint any pattern you wish. When applying the adhesive, you want it to be thick but not clumpy or heavy.

DIY Gold Foil Napkins | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

Next, allow the adhesive to dry. The longer the better. I’d say at least an hour or two. When ready, the adhesive will be tacky, not wet.

Then, apply the foil transfer sheets, metallic side up.

DIY Gold Foil Napkins | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

Using your hands, rub the transfer sheets where you applied the adhesive.

DIY Gold Foil Napkins | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

Then remove the sheets. If any areas are still tacky after removing the sheets, just apply the sheets again. Rub; then remove. Repeat until you achieve the coverage you desire or until the adhesive is no longer tacky.

DIY Gold Foil Napkins | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

That’s it. Your napkins are complete.

DIY Gold Foil Napkins | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

These napkins can be hand washed in cold water.

With a variety of oil options, patterns, and napkin colors, you have endless ways of bringing the bling to your tablescape. I’m confident these napkins will be the perfect addition to your holiday celebration.

These could even double as place cards by attaching a tag to them with your guest’s name.

And, if you’re willing to give them up, your guests could take them home as a little favor.

DIY Color Wrapped Wheat | inspiredbycharm.com

Let me show you how easy they are to make.

How to Make this DIY Wrapped Color Week:

For this project, you will need dried wheat stalks, embroidery floss (in any color you’d like), and a pair of scissors. Yep, that’s it.

You can buy dried wheat stalks HERE or HERE

DIY Color Wrapped Wheat | inspiredbycharm.com

You will want to start off with a few stalks of wheat. I prefer sticking with an odd number so I made some with five stalks and some with seven stalks.

DIY Color Wrapped Wheat | inspiredbycharm.com

Bunch the wheat together near the top, wrap around once with the embroidery floss, and tie a knot to hold everything in place.

Then, start to wrap the embroidery floss around the stalks. I found it easiest to spin the wheat to wrap the floss rather than spinning my hand around the wheat.

DIY Color Wrapped Wheat | inspiredbycharm.com

Cover about 2 inches of the stalks with the floss and then tie another knot to hold everything in place.

That’s it!

DIY Color Wrapped Wheat | inspiredbycharm.com

If you’re putting them in a vase like I did here, you can trim the bottom of the stems so they are all the same length.

DIY Color Wrapped Wheat | inspiredbycharm.com

DIY Color Wrapped Wheat | inspiredbycharm.com

I like using a clear glass vase because the wheat is so pretty on its own. (You can check out how I made the gold and burlap runner here.)

To use the wrapped wheat on my place settings, I just trimmed the stalks so they’re really short.

DIY Color Wrapped Wheat | inspiredbycharm.com

The wheat would also look great tied on a package or a gift. Another possibility is to tuck one or two in a live flower arrangement for a little touch of harvest.

DIY Color Wrapped Wheat | inspiredbycharm.com

That’s it for today. I hope you enjoyed this simple, yet beautiful DIY.

Classic thumbprint cookies get an upgrade thanks to a generous scope of Nutella. These Nutella Thumbprint Cookies are an easy and crowd-pleasing recipes!

We did it, friends. Fall Cookie Week 2015 is a wrap! Today we are wrapping things up with these Nutella Thumbprint Cookies!

This is always a fun and tasty week for me. I end up having cookies with my coffee every morning for breakfast, and that makes me one happy guy.

Nutella Thumbprints | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCfallcookieweek

Plus, FCW gives me a chance to get creative, try new recipes, and share them with you. I know that we’ll soon be moving into the holiday season, but I think all of these recipes would work well for entertaining and gifts. I hope you’ll get a chance to try them at some point.

Nutella Thumbprint Cookies

Nutella Thumbprints | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCfallcookieweek

As I mentioned, today I’m closing the series with everyone’s favorite: Nutella. I thought that it would be hard to top last year’s Salted Caramel Thumbprints, but I figured making something with Nutella might up the odds.

How to Make Nutella Thumbprint Cookies

Again, with these cookies, I took a classic thumbprint recipe and just substituted Nutella for the jam. It’s as simple as that.

Nutella Thumbprints | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCfallcookieweek

The Nutella goes into the thumbprint after the cookies come out of the oven. Since Nutella is a bit thick, I find that popping it in the microwave helps to make it the perfect consistency for spooning on the cookie.

What is not to love about a cookie topped with Nutella?! Yes, please. Let’s bake up a couple dozen or so.

Enjoy Nutella? You’l love these recipes too:

They look delectable, don’t they? They are!

Again, in case you missed any cookies in Fall Cookie Week 2015, you can find all of the recipes here. Thanks so much for following along during FCW.

Hey there! Happy Saturday and Happy Halloween! What are your plans for the holiday?

I’m staying in and working. I decided that my bathroom needed a little “weekend” makeover so I’m knee-deep in painting. Plus, I have a few other projects to wrap up and some travel plans on the horizon; so it’s going to be a busy weekend. (I’ll be talking about my bathroom project next week on the blog.)

Chocolate Covered Pretzel Peanut Butter Cookies | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCfallcookieweek

However, I’m not too busy for cookies! I have two more Fall Cookie Week (FCW) recipes to share with you this weekend to wrap up the series.

Peanut butter cookies have long been a favorite of mine. Add a little chocolate to them, and I’m in heaven. As you know, the combination of peanut butter and chocolate is irresistible to me, so this pairing had to find its way into FCW.

Chocolate Covered Pretzel Peanut Butter Cookies | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCfallcookieweek

Here, I took a basic peanut butter cookie recipe and added chocolate covered pretzels to create these Chocolate Covered Pretzel Peanut Butter Cookies.

Chocolate Covered Pretzel Peanut Butter Cookies | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCfallcookieweek

Not only does the chocolate complement the peanut butter, but the pretzel adds a touch of saltiness and great crunch.

Chocolate Covered Pretzel Peanut Butter Cookies | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCfallcookieweek

And doesn’t the garnish of a chocolate covered pretzel on top just look perfect?

Chocolate Covered Pretzel Peanut Butter Cookies | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCfallcookieweek

This is a fun twist on a classic that I know you’re going to love. Let’s whip some up.

Chocolate Covered Pretzel Peanut Butter Cookies | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCfallcookieweek

Chocolate Covered Pretzel Peanut Butter Cookies

Makes about 3 dozen cookies

2 1/4 cup flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
1 cup creamy peanut butter
3/4 cup sugar
1/4 cup brown sugar
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 cup chocolate covered pretzels, chopped
36 whole chocolate covered pretzels

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F.

In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.

In the bowl of a stand mixer, cream together the butter, peanut butter, sugar, and brown sugar. Mix until smooth (about 3-5 minutes). Add the egg and vanilla. Mix until combined.

With the mixer on low speed, gradually add the flour mixture until just combined. Mix in the chopped chocolate covered pretzels.

Scoop the dough into 1-inch balls and place on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Lightly flatten each ball to create a disc shape. Bake for 10-11 minutes.

Remove the cookies from the oven and allow them to cool on the baking sheet for 5-8 minutes before removing to a baking rack to finish cooling. Once completely cool, remove them from the rack and top each cookie with a chocolate covered pretzel. Store the cookies in an air-tight container.

Pretty delicious, right? These cookies are soft on the inside with a slight crunchiness on the outside. Just how a peanut butter cookie should be.

These Waffle Cookies are so delicious! Made in a waffle iron and topped with a maple glaze they are a unique and tasty cookie everyone is going to love.

Cinnamon Waffle Cookies with Maple Glaze | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCfallcookieweek

It’s Fall Cookie Week! Let’s talk about today’s cookie (All the FCW recipes can be found here in case you missed any). Today I’m so excited to share my recipe for Waffle Cookies with Maple Glaze!

Waffle Cookies:

Cinnamon Waffle Cookies with Maple Glaze | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCfallcookieweek

That’s right, we are trying something totally different. We’re baking cookies in a waffle iron: Cinnamon Waffle Cookies with Maple Glaze.

Cinnamon Waffle Cookies with Maple Glaze | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCfallcookieweek

I know. I know. My inner Leslie Knope just exploded.

giphy
People love waffles and people love breakfast for dinner, so why not bite-sized waffles coated in a maple glaze? You can eat them any time of the day. It’s genius.

How do you Make Waffle Cookies?

Cinnamon Waffle Cookies with Maple Glaze | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCfallcookieweek

These cookies are a bit time consuming because you can only “bake” four at once (depending on the size of your waffle iron.), but they bake quickly, and I think the results make the time totally worth it.

waffle cookies

You wouldn’t think this technique would work, but it does. The cookies come out of the waffle iron feeling a bit soft and waffle-like. Once they start to cool, they get a semi-firm, almost-crusty exterior which makes them much more cookie-like.

And since waffles aren’t complete without maple syrup, these cookies get dipped into a maple syrup glaze. – Be sure to use pure maple syrup. It makes a big difference.

Cinnamon Waffle Cookies with Maple Glaze | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCfallcookieweek

I have to recommend Finding Home Farms maple syrup because it’s the bomb.

Cinnamon Waffle Cookies with Maple Glaze | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCfallcookieweek

You may recognize that name. Finding Home Farms is also the name of the blog of my friend and fabulous entrepreneur Laura! (She coordinated the Fall Home Tour series.) Anyway, check out her syrup. You’ll love it.

So unique and simple, right? These Waffle Cookies will definitely add some interest and delight to any cookie tray. They are ideal for the holiday gifts, too.

Cinnamon Waffle Cookies with Maple Glaze | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCfallcookieweek

Waffle Cookie Recipe:

Cinnamon Waffle Cookies with Maple Glaze

Makes about 3 dozen cookies

Here's what you will need:
2 sticks butter, unsalted
1 cup sugar
1/4 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons cinnamon
3 eggs
2 cups all-purpose flour

Maple Glaze
1 cup powdered sugar
1/3 cup pure maple syrup
1/4 teaspoon salt

In the bowl of a stand mixer, cream together the butter and sugar until smooth (about 4-5 minutes). Add the salt and cinnamon. Mix to combine.

Turn the mixer to medium and add the eggs one at a time until incorporated.

Set the mixer to low and slowly add the flour. The batter will be sticky.

Next, turn on your waffle iron and set the temperature to medium-high (400 degrees F). Add about a tablespoon of dough to each section of the waffle iron. "Bake" for 2-4 minutes or until the cookies golden brown. Let the cookies cool and crisp up on a wire rack.

For the glaze, whisk together the powdered sugar, maple syrup, and salt until smooth. (If the mixture seems too thick, you can thin it with a little milk.) Dip the tops of each cookie into the glaze and return them to the cooling rack to set. Pack and store your waffle cookies in an air-tight container.

Woah! What’s happening? This isn’t a post about cookies! You’re right. I’m interrupting Fall Cookie Week to bring you some last-minute fall decorating ideas. (Don’t worry, there’s still a cookie recipe for today. You can find it here.)

Each month I team up with a few blogger friends to share a series of posts with 10 minute ideas. Whether we are creating, decorating, or cooking, the array of ideas shared each month is always inspired. So, when you’re finished here, be sure to check out all of the 10 Minute Decorating Ideas below.

Since most of my fall decorating is complete, (Yes, I’m one of those weird folks who switches into Christmas mode on the first day of November.), I thought today would be a great opportunity to round up 10 Quick and Easy Fall Decorating Ideas. With Halloween just around the corner and Thanksgiving less then a month away, I decided to use this post to recap ten of my favorite IBC fall decorating ideas. Each of these ideas requires minimal time, effort, and money.. So, if you’re looking for a few more inspired fall decorating ideas, this post is for you.

10 Quick and Easy Fall Decorating Ideas:

1. Pumpkin Cake Stand – In case you need to create a little height and interest on your table or buffet, consider turning a pumpkin into a cake stand. Just remove the stem and add a plate.

10 Quick and Easy Fall Decorating Ideas | inspiredbycharm.com

2. “Acorn” Acorn Squash – This is a fun little craft I recently created. All you need is rope, hot glue, and acorn squash to add a rustic touch to your fall decor. Get the full tutorial here.

10 Quick and Easy Fall Decorating Ideas | inspiredbycharm.com

3. Create a Candy Bar – As part of my Fall Home Tour, I created a candy bar in my office. Not only does it look beautiful, but it’s functional, too. Of course, who doesn’t love a display of sweet treats. (Disclaimer: I take no responsibility for any pounds gained from implementation of this decor idea.)

10 Quick and Easy Fall Decorating Ideas | inspiredbycharm.com

4. Fall Branches – Right now, nature is putting on a color show. Why not bring some of this natural color into your home? Don’t fret if you live in the city or don’t have trees to snip. I found these brightly colored branches online.

10 Quick and Easy Fall Decorating Ideas | inspiredbycharm.com

5. Printables – Hit up places like Pinterest or Etsy for seasonal printables. I found this “Hello Fall” printable from this fabulous Etsy shop for $5. That’s a steal for artwork that’s become a feature on my mantel. Etsy has hundreds of seasonal printables, and most a pretty inexpensive. If you’re lucky, you may even be able to find free printables via Pinterest.

More Quick and Easy Fall Decorating Ideas:

6. Flowers – Blooms aren’t just for spring and summer. I like to display fresh flowers and greens all year long. In the fall, things like mums, sunflowers, and even yellow and orange roses beautifully complement your decor. If possible, pick a flower that’s in season. If you can’t, use color as your guide and pair your floral choice with a seasonal vase. Tuck in autumn leaves or branches for even more fall flare. (More fall flower tips here.)

10 Quick and Easy Fall Decorating Ideas | inspiredbycharm.com

7. Pumpkin Planter – Speaking of nature, turn a pumpkin into a planter. Here I used succulents I had leftover from summer to create an interesting fall display. (See how I created it here.) You can keep the pumpkin planter as is, or add a few spiders to create a hair-raising effect.

10 Quick and Easy Fall Decorating Ideas | inspiredbycharm.com

8. Candlesticks – Okay, let’s finish this up with a few Halloween decorating ideas. I don’t like to get too scary and gruesome when it comes to Halloween decor. However, I do like to have a bit of fun. One way to add instant spookiness is with a bunch of candlesticks and candles. I’m not sure what it is, but a grouping of them make things instantly eerie. Stacks of books and spiders help, too. You can check out the full tutorial for this Spooky Chic Mantel here.

10 Quick and Easy Fall Decorating Ideas | inspiredbycharm.com

9. Chalkboard Wall – A few years ago I had a wall painted with chalkboard paint. I enjoyed updating the board with the change of seasons. One year, inspired by the Halloween favorite, Hocus Pocus, I drew the Hocus Pocus Broom Co. on my chalkboard wall. Talk about a statement piece! While this is a fairly large scale drawing (and it did take longer than ten minutes), you could create something similar and smaller on a portion of a wall or even a large board.

10 Quick and Easy Fall Decorating Ideas | inspiredbycharm.com

10. Book Pages – If you have some older books that are damaged or no longer usable, put them to work in your decor. I found seasonal images online and printed them onto old book pages. (You can find the full tutorial here.) Then I used the book pages all around my home to decorate. This theme brought a consistent look throughout my home.

10 Quick and Easy Fall Decorating Ideas | inspiredbycharm.com

Bonus Idea: Cocktail Garnishes – Sometimes the magic is in the details. Okay, technically this isn’t decorating, but it does involve embellishing glassware, so it qualifies. I made basic cocktails seasonal just by switching up the garnish. A martini with a dripping “blood” rim and a highball that’s been haunted are perfect for Halloween. You can get the recipes for these cocktails here.

Freshman Fifteen? More like the Fall Cookie Week Fifteen! I’m kidding. (No, I’m not. I can’t stop eating the cookies I’m baking. Send help immediately!) Thanks for stopping back for IBC’s Fall Cookie Week 2015.

Chai Spiced Snickerdoodles | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCfallcookieweek

In case you missed it, we had a little FCW intermission. This morning I teamed up with my fellow 10 Minute Ideas bloggers to share some quick and easy ideas for Fall Decorating. You can find that post here.

After yesterday’s decadence with the Brown Sugar Pecan Cookies, I’m toning things down a little with these Chai Spiced Snickerdoodles.

Chai Spiced Snickerdoodles | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCfallcookieweek

They’re a bit more subtle, but not boring or flavorless. Packed with a delightful blend of spices, these cookies pack beautifully rounded flavor without hurting your teeth with sweetness. They are begging to be enjoyed with a cup of tea while you shop online or catch up on the latest episode of Oprah’s Master Class. (The one with Ellen was so good!)

Chai Spiced Snickerdoodles | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCfallcookieweek

I really enjoy these cookies as I’ve been a fan of chai tea for years and years. I usually stick with the standard Tazo tea that you can buy in liquid form at many grocery stores. I mix mine with milk, warm it up in the microwave, and add a little sugar for sweetness. There’s something about that spice blend that warms you up from the inside out. These Chai Spice Snickerdoodles give me that same feeling.

Chai Spiced Snickerdoodles | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCfallcookieweek

These cookies are perfect for this time of year when you just want that touch of spice to add a little giddy to your step and warmth to your heart (and tummy). It also helps that they are super simple to bake. Let’s do it.

Chai Spiced Snickerdoodles | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCfallcookieweek

Chai Spiced Snickerdoodles

Makes about 3 dozen cookies

Here's what you will need:
1 cup sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
1/2 teaspoon ground cardamom
1/4 teaspoon ground allspice
1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened
1 egg
3/4 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
1 1/2 cups all purpose flour
1 teaspoon cream of tartar
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt

Begin by preheating your oven to 350 degrees F.

Whisk together the sugar, cinnamon, cardamom, ginger, and allspice in a bowl. Remove 1/4 cup of this mixture to a bowl for rolling the dough in before baking. Set aside.

In the bowl of a stand mixer, cream together the butter and remaining sugar mixture until light and fluffy (about 4-5 minutes). Add the egg and vanilla and mix until combined.

In a large bowl, combine the flour, baking soda, cream of tartar and salt. Then, with the mixer on low, add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture until just incorporated.

Roll the dough into 1-inch balls; then roll the balls in the reserved sugar and spice mixture. Place the balls on a baking sheet. Bake at 350 degrees F for 10-12 minutes or until the cookies just start to brown and crack. Transfer the cookies to a cooling rack to cool completely before packing and storing them in an air tight container.

Brown Sugar Pecan Cookies | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCfallcookieweek

Happy Tuesday and welcome back to Fall Cookie Week 2015!

I’m super excited to share today’s recipe with you. Don’t tell the other cookies, but these Brown Sugar Pecan Cookies are looking to be a favorite in this year’s series. How do I know? It’s because when I’m craving something a little sweet, I make a beeline for the cookie tin that contains these cookies. That’s a sure sign of a good cookie.

Brown Sugar Pecan Cookies | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCfallcookieweek

Of course, these guys do have an unfair advantage. Any cookie with frosting typically moves to the front of the pack. For example, the Frosted Pumpkin Cookies I made a few years ago and the Maple Cream Sandwich Cookies I made last year are still two of my favorites. (Note to Self: Think about having an All-Star Fall Cookie Week next year where you make all of the favorites from the past few years.)

Brown Sugar Pecan Cookies | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCfallcookieweek

Anyway, what I’m really saying is, you need to make these cookies.

Brown Sugar Pecan Cookies | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCfallcookieweek

Now, I know I might have lost some of you because there are pecans in these cookies. I get it. Ten years ago I wouldn’t have touched any cookie with nuts in it. However, if you are anything like the old me, just give this a try anyway. Maybe your taste buds have changed. (I’ve heard it said that our taste buds change every seven years.) You just might now love pecans in cookies. Stranger things have happened.

Brown Sugar Pecan Cookies | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCfallcookieweek

So what else makes these cookies so tasty? First, the flavor is on point. Perfectly fall. (Great for the holidays, too.) Second, the frosting is super easy and super sugary. (It uses two types of sugar.) Finally, the pecans add great texture and crunch. – There’s a reason they are in there, people.

Have I got you drooling, yet?

Brown Sugar Pecan Cookies | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCfallcookieweek

Okay, enough talk (and drooling). Let’s bake!

Brown Sugar Pecan Cookies | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCfallcookieweek

Brown Sugar Pecan Cookies

Makes about 3 dozen cookies

Here's what you will need:
2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 cup unsalted butter, softened
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup packed brown sugar
1 large egg
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/2 cup finely chopped pecans
Pecan halves or chopped pecans for garnish

Brown Sugar Frosting
1 cup packed brown sugar
1/2 cup whole milk
1 tablespoon butter
1/4 teaspoon salt
2 cups confectioner's sugar

In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.

In the bowl of a stand mixer, beat together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy (about 5 minutes). Add the egg and vanilla and beat until combined.

Mix in the dry ingredients until just combined; then stir in the chopped pecans. Cover the dough and refrigerate for at least one hour.

Once the dough is chilled, begin by preheating your oven to 350 degrees F.

Shape the dough into 1-inch balls and place two inches apart on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake for 10 minutes or until set. The cookies should just start to lightly brown. Allow to cool.

Meanwhile, prepare your frosting. In a pot over medium heat, combine the brown sugar and milk. Bring to a boil and boil for about 3-4 minutes, stirring constantly. Remove from heat and stir in the butter and salt.

Then, stir in the confectioner's sugar. Whisk or beat with an electric mixer until smooth. The frosting will firm up as it cools. However, if it seems too thin to spread, add more confectioner's sugar until the desired consistency is achieved.

Add about 1 tablespoon of frosting to each cookie. (I used the back of the spoon to spread the frosting around.) Top with a pecan half and / or chopped pecans. Allow the frosting to set before packing and storing the cookies in an air tight container.

Recipe adapted from Southern Living.

In case you need one more reason to love these cookies: they are as pretty as they are tasty. Even though I appreciate a fussy cookie, sometimes simple is best. I love that these look homemade. The chopped / halved pecans on top are the perfect finishing touch.

These Gingersnaps with Apple Cider Glaze combine two of my favorite flavors to create one delicious fall cookie recipe!

Gingersnaps with Apple Cider Glaze | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCfallcookieweek

Well friends, it’s back! Fall Cookie Week has returned to IBC and I’m kicking things off with the Gingersnaps with Apple Cider Glaze.

Gingersnaps with Apple Cider Glaze | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCfallcookieweek

Four years ago, I decided to start this cookie week when I was preparing treats for an open house in my gift shop. I wanted to have some snacks on hand as my guests shopped. I though could involved blog readers as well by sharing the recipes, so I did.

A lot has changed since then, but I’m so happy to be back and sharing seven more delicious, fall-inspired cookie recipes. As many of you well know, the gift shop is no longer here, but this week of baking has become somewhat of a tradition and I come to look forward to it each year. Plus, I tend to become pretty popular with my family as I’m the man with 250+ cookies to giveaway.

Gingersnaps with Apple Cider Glaze | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCfallcookieweek

This past weekend I baked five different batches of cookies with two more to complete this week. I’m really excited about this years line-up and I think you will be too.

If you decide to join along in the baking fun, I would love to see your cookie creations. Share them on Instagram using the hashtag #myIBC for a chance to have them and your Instagram featured on the Fall Cookie Week series page. Alright, on to the baking!

Gingersnaps with Apple Cider Glaze

For today’s cookie, I’m pulling out some traditional IBC style – a classic with a twist. Gingersnaps have long been a favorite cookie of mine. I know, it’s kind of boring, right? However, there’s something about their soft inner texture, crunchy crust, and bold season flavor that has me hooked.

Gingersnaps with Apple Cider Glaze | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCfallcookieweek

However, I wanted to turn the dial up on this cookie with a flavorful and fun twist. I did it with a Apple Cider Glaze. Thus, my Gingersnap with Apple Cider Glaze was born.

Gingersnaps with Apple Cider Glaze | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCfallcookieweek

How to Make Gingersnaps with Apple Cider Glaze

This easy to make glaze add the perfect touch of seasonal sweetness to make these cookies perfect for fall. It’s so simple too. Butter, confectioner’s sugar, and apple cider are whisked together in one easy step. Not, only does this glaze work well on these cookies, it’s perfect on a bundt cake, cinnamon rolls, pancakes – whatever sweet treat needs a drizzle of icing.

You can apply this glaze to your cookies anyway you wish. I opted to have fun and do random drizzles in varying directions and thicknesses. It’s a bit artistic, don’t you think?

Ingredients

Cider Drizzle:

Instructions

  • In a large bowl sift together the flour, ginger, baking soda, cinnamon, and salt. Stir the ingredients to combine. Set aside.
  • In the bowl of a stand mixer, beat the butter until creamy. Gradually beat in the white sugar. Then beat in the egg and dark molasses. Add 1/3 of the flour mixture into the butter mixture, mix to combine. Add the reming flour mixture and mix until a soft dough forms. Refrigerate the dough for at least one hour.
  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
  • Once the dough is chilled, roll the dough into 1-inch balls. Then, roll each ball in the cinnamon sugar and place 2 inches apart on an non-greased cookie sheet.
  • Bake until the tops are slightly rounded and cracked, about 10 minutes. Allow the cookies to cool on a wire rack.
  • In the meantime, prepare the cider glaze. In a bowl, whisk together the butter, confectioner's sugar, and apple cider. Add more confection's sugar if needed for a thicker glaze. Once the cookies have cooled, drizzle with the glaze. Allow the glaze to set before packing and storing in an air tight container.

Mulled Wine | inspiredbycharm.com

If you’re looking for a delicious warm cocktail, this Mulled Wine recipe is an easy and delicious recipe for the fall and holiday season.

It snowed here last week. Can you believe it!?! (Bring on my Mulled Wine recipe!!) Nothing stuck around for long, but in my book, mid-October is too early for the white stuff. Not being a huge fan of winter, I was not happy to see those fluffy flakes.

Our snow event, however, has a silver lining (actually two). It’s said that if snow falls before the first frost, we will have an “easy winter. “*crosses fingers* Secondly, snow gives me an excuse to stay inside, watch SVU marathons, and whip up something delicious in the kitchen.

That might be the only way I can tolerate winter: Olivia Benson and something yummy on the stove or in the oven.

The Best Mulled Wine Recipe:

Mulled Wine | inspiredbycharm.com

So to kick off this cozy season, today I’m sharing a recipe for Mulled Wine. I can’t believe that in seven years of blogging, this is my first post about how to make Mulled Wine. What’s wrong with me!?!

Mulled Wine | inspiredbycharm.com

Earlier this week I was watching Matt Bellassai’s Whine About It. (Side note: If you haven’t watched this web series, do yourself a favor and go back and check out the first season. I should mention that there is some foul language and off color humor in case that might offend you.) In this episode I watched, Matt was sipping on mulled wine, and immediately I knew I had to whip up a batch.

Mulled Wine | inspiredbycharm.com

How Do you Make Mulled Wine?

It’s really very simple. Everything get’s tossed into a pot and set to simmer.

Once it’s warm, it’s ready to serve! It really is that easy.

There’s something wonderful about warm spiced wine. The combination of the smell, warmth, and flavor is magical and a must-have for cool fall or winter evenings. It’s also the perfect beverage for entertaining. Throw everything in a crock pot, set it on low, and you’re done. Plus, it makes your home smell fabulous. Love that!

What Wine is Best for Mulled Wine?

Pinot Noir is kind of my go-to for everything. However something like New World Merlot or Shiraz would work quite nicely too. Any Italian red would be delightful too!

I always recommend a wine you like to drink. If necessary invite a lot of friends and family over and keep making batch after batch of mulled wine until you find just the right one.

Mulled Wine | inspiredbycharm.com

What goes into mulled wine?:

For the recipe below, I used the following ingredients to make my mulled wine.

  • red wine
  • apple cider
  • brandy
  • honey
  • cinnamon sticks
  • oranges
  • cloves
  • peppercorns

The recipe below makes a double batch, which is perfect for a crockpot or larger pot. However, feel free to cut this recipe in half. I just heated up mine on the stove in my Straub Cocotte which makes a beautiful presentation.

Also instead of adding in the spices loose, you can use Mulling Spices. I have a recipe for how to make them at home HERE.

Keep in mind that you want the mixture to warm up and only simmer. Try not to boil it as you’ll end up cooking off some of the alcohol. What’s the fun in the that?

Mulled Wine | inspiredbycharm.com

For the wine, I combined one sweeter red (a locally made wine) and a dry wine (I like Pinot Noir or Shiraz.). Use wine you like to drink and pick a sweetness level that works for you.

Okay, now let’s whip up a batch.

Mulled Wine | inspiredbycharm.com

It’s really that simple. To a make this even easier, place the cloves and peppercorns in a tea ball or cheesecloth so you don’t have to hunt for them once the simmering is complete.

Fall "Apple" Cheese Balls | inspiredbycharm.com

These apple-shaped cheeseballs make the perfect fall cheeseball recipe for entertaining. With two flavor variations, there’s something everyone will love.

Last year around this time I created one of my favorite posts. However, it was for my friends over at BHG. (Shout out to Eddie Ross for originating this super chic idea!) And while it got a mention here on IBC, I never really shared the recipes from it. To remedy the situation, I thought we’d have a Throwback Thursday here on the blog.

Fall "Apple" Cheese Balls | inspiredbycharm.com

The recipes I want to tell you about are for these adorable and delicious fall cheese balls. What makes them extra special (beyond the fact that they are balls of cheese you can eat) is that they are designed to look like apples.

You can find one recipe below and the second recipe HERE.

Fall "Apple" Cheese Balls | inspiredbycharm.com

This fabulously simple idea will take your fall entertaining to the next level. Trust me. Your guests will be impressed.

Fall "Apple" Cheese Balls | inspiredbycharm.com

I’m going to share a few variations of these cheese balls, but feel free to get creative with your ingredients and toppings. The one thing I do recommend is using freshly shredded cheese. As much as I love the convenience of the packaged variety, you can’t beat the flavor and texture of freshly shredded.

If you liked this cheeseball recipe, you’ll love these too:

You can find the recipe for this bright red white cheddar cheese ball below.

Fall "Apple" Cheese Balls | inspiredbycharm.com

White Cheddar "Apple" Cheese Ball

(Makes one cheese ball)

Here's what you will need:
8 ounces white cheddar cheese, freshly shredded
1 package (8 ounces) cream cheese, softened
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1/8 teaspoon ground red pepper
Paprika for dusting
Cutting from a small branch

Using a hand mixer, combine the cheddar cheese, cream cheese, garlic power and ground red pepper in a large bowl until smooth.

Then shape the cheese mixture into a ball. No need to be perfect here as apples aren't uniformly shaped. Make an indentation in the ball with your thumb to resemble the top of an apple. Chill ball for 30 minutes.

Remove from the refrigerator and coat the cheese ball heavily with paprika. Cover and chill for at least two hours before serving. Insert a branch with leaves to create an "apple stem."

Simple, right? A small tweak makes a boring cheese ball something really special.

Next, let’s talk about making two other “apples.” The recipe for these cheese balls is pretty much the same as the previous one; the outside coating is the main difference.

Fall "Apple" Cheese Balls | inspiredbycharm.com

One of the “apples” is rolled in finely crushed pistachios; the other is coated with finely crush walnuts and finely chopped bacon. I have created a separate post for that recipe. You can find it by clicking HERE.

Simple, elegant, and absolutely delicious. How can you go wrong with a ball of cheese?

Lowe's Fall Makeover Reveal | inspiredbycharm.com

Today I’m so excited to be revealing the results of the Fall Makeover I did with Lowe’s. It was a whirlwind of an experience that I am delighted to be sharing with all of you.

Lowe's Fall Makeover Reveal | inspiredbycharm.com

First, a bit of background. About a month ago I put a call out on IBC for a homeowner wanting a room makeover. Hundreds of you applied, and as much as I wanted to make over all of your spaces, I had to choose one. The homeowner who I selected was Christi (and her family of five) from a small town near Toledo, Ohio. Christi’s sitting room was in need of a makeover. As a stay-at-home mom with four children under the age of five, making over this space wasn’t feasible for her and her husband. They really wanted this room to match the rest of their home, but time and money weren’t on their side.

As part of the application process, Christi created a list of things she wanted for the room. That list included a fresh and modern wall color, new furnishings, storage shelves, an area for coats and shoes, lighting, a colorful rug, and a gallery wall. After Christi helped me out by sharing a Pinterest board with ideas for her space, I put together a plan.

Christi was a dream to work with and gave me lots of freedom when designing the space. She and her husband were thrilled to have help from Lowe’s and me to update and furnish their space.

Let’s take a quick look at some before pictures. These were shot by the homeowners before I arrived.

Lowe's Fall Makeover Reveal | inspiredbycharm.com

As you can see, the walls are a mustardy beige color. The homeowners’ style is brighter and more modern so this color was not working for them. This color also made the room seem dark and small.

Lowe's Fall Makeover Reveal | inspiredbycharm.com

Lowe's Fall Makeover Reveal | inspiredbycharm.com

Most of the furniture and art in the space were hand-me-downs. Christy and her husband were excited to ditch the old and usher in something new that they could call their own.

So, presented with a space that needed a makeover, willing homeowners, and lots of furnishings being delivered from Lowe’s, I made the five-hour drive to Ohio to get this makeover started.

painting hall

Thanks to the Lowe’s Heroes, the first day of the makeover was a huge success. The team quickly got going with painting the ceiling and walls. We even painted the homeowners’ small hallway that leads to the bedrooms. (It was the same mustardy beige color, so it definitely needed a change.)

Lowe's Fall Makeover Reveal | inspiredbycharm.com

The Lowe’s Heroes also helped to unpack and assemble some of the furniture and install it in the space. In addition, we built an entryway shelf so that the family would have room to hang coats.

Lowe's Fall Makeover Reveal | inspiredbycharm.com

We even had a couple little helpers. It was super sweet when one of the Lowe’s Heroes asked the kids to get involved.

Once day one was over, my friends from Lowe’s packed up their gear and headed out. But not before I took their photo.

Lowe's Fall Makeover Reveal | inspiredbycharm.com

I’m immensely grateful to this team for working diligently to bring the room together. Thank you!

With most of the hard labor complete, the second day was devoted to styling the space. Thanks to lots of pillows, plants, and a gallery wall, the room came together beautifully. Let me show you around.

Lowe's Fall Makeover Reveal | inspiredbycharm.com

Quite a transformation, right?

Lowe's Fall Makeover Reveal | inspiredbycharm.com

As you can see, the wall color I chose makes a huge difference. It’s Valspar’s Filtered Shade. It makes the room much bigger and brighter. It also works much better with the color palette in the rest of the home.

Lowe's Fall Makeover Reveal | inspiredbycharm.com

Also, as I mentioned, getting some new furnishings was essential. The Eden Sofa and Modway Gray Chair instantly updated the space. The Allen + Roth rug adds a pop of color and really great texture and pattern.
Lowe's Fall Makeover Reveal | inspiredbycharm.com

I also chose these mint ottomans. Not only do they add color, but the tops are removable for hidden storage. Plus, the round, upholstered edges make them kid friendly.

Lowe's Fall Makeover Reveal | inspiredbycharm.com

Lowe's Fall Makeover Reveal | inspiredbycharm.com

For the entry way, we DIY’d a shelf from lumber, wood brackets, and hooks. Since there are six hooks, each member of the family now has one. Benches below offer storage and a place to put on shoes.

Lowe's Fall Makeover Reveal | inspiredbycharm.com

Lowe's Fall Makeover Reveal | inspiredbycharm.com

Even more storage was added with a pair of shelves. The homeowners were excited about these from Allen + Roth as they’ve been wanting shelves like these for years.

accessories

Lowe's Fall Makeover Reveal | inspiredbycharm.com

A couple of accessories bring in personality, and baskets were used for additional storage.

Lowe's Fall Makeover Reveal | inspiredbycharm.com

The rest of the space was accessorized with pops of pink, blue, and metallics.

Lowe's Fall Makeover Reveal | inspiredbycharm.com

Lowe's Fall Makeover Reveal | inspiredbycharm.com

On one large wall, I created a gallery wall per Christi’s request. I used white frames and a few gold ones for interest to frame free printables I found online. I also included fish art at the request of the homeowners’ oldest son, Harper. The family was encouraged to add personal photographs if they wish.

Lowe's Fall Makeover Reveal | inspiredbycharm.com

Lowe's Fall Makeover Reveal | inspiredbycharm.com

To finish off a room, I think a touch of nature is a must. A large plant, an orchid, and some fresh flowers worked perfectly in Christi’s space.

Lowe's Fall Makeover Reveal | inspiredbycharm.com

Lowe's Fall Makeover Reveal | inspiredbycharm.com

I’d say that this sitting room makeover is complete.

Lowe's Fall Makeover Reveal | inspiredbycharm.com

That’s one happy, beautiful family, isn’t it?

Lowe's Fall Makeover Reveal | inspiredbycharm.com

And one more time … Before:

After:

Lowe's Fall Makeover Reveal | inspiredbycharm.com

It was such a joy to create this space with and for this family. I hope they enjoy it for years to come.

A big thank you to Christi and her family for being wonderful throughout this process. It was a pleasure to work with them. (Christi, Thanks, too, for the pumpkin spice latte, homemade oatmeal, and fall treats. You were the hostess with the “mostess.”)

And another huge thank you to the Lowe’s Heroes for helping to bring this vision to life. I truly could not have done it without you!

I had the pleasure of talking with an IBC reader the other day via social media. Even though we don’t know each other personally, this individual comment about how much I love any pumpkin-related sweet. I wasn’t surprised by the remark since I’ve mentioned it many times on the blog and am constantly pinning and sharing sweet pumpkin recipes on Facebook.

While there are days when social media drives me nuts (as I’m sure it does everyone), I love when I’m able to use it to connect with people, share joy, and see that joy inspire others. It’s been said that happiness is contagious, and I couldn’t agree more.

Over the next few months, I’m teaming up with Reddi-wip and their #ShareTheJoy program. The idea behind this program is to find joyful opportunities during our busy days and to share the joy with others. Of course, at the end of the day, if we are happy, it’s easier to spread that happiness to others.

I’m so excited about this program because it fits so well with my mission for Inspired by Charm. Plus, it’s an excuse to always have cans or Reddi-Wip in my refrigerator – and who wouldn’t want that. I encourage all of you to join in and use social media to share your #SharetheJoy stories. Spread the love, people.

Chocolate Pumpkin Tiramisu | inspiredbycharm.com

Back to the kind reader who noticed my love of all things pumpkin: I thought it would be only appropriate to kick off this series with a pumpkin-inspired treat. Today, I’m showing you how to make Chocolate Pumpkin Tiramisu.

I know I say this about every dessert (’cause it’s true), but Tiramisu is one of my favorites. If I go to a good Italian restaurant that has tiramisu on the menu, you can bet I order it. And I don’t share a bite.

Chocolate Pumpkin Tiramisu | inspiredbycharm.com

This recipe for Chocolate Pumpkin Tiramisu adds a seasonal twist to the classic. Plus, it’s created in individual glasses so the presentation is beautiful and personalized.

Chocolate Pumpkin Tiramisu | inspiredbycharm.com

Layers of lady fingers dipped in chocolate coffee are topped with a pumpkin- infused mascarpone cream that I could literally eat just by itself. Shredded chocolate also finds its way between the layers. Finally, the whole thing is topped off with Reddi-Wip and a little more shredded chocolate. The best part? No baking is required, and you can whip it up in about 30 minutes (with chilling).

Chocolate Pumpkin Tiramisu

(Makes 6)

Here's what you will need:
1 1/2 bars (3.5 ounces) dark chocolate
1 1/2 cups hot coffee
6 tablespoons bourbon
1 1/2 cups mascarpone
1 cup confectioners' sugar
2/3 cup heavy cream
1 1/2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
1 cup canned pumpkin puree
3 packages (3 ounces) soft Italian ladyfingers (54 cookies)
1 can Reddi-Wip

Begin by coarsely chopping one bar of chocolate. Transfer the chopped chocolate to a large bowl, pour in the coffee and whisk until the chocolate is melted. Then, whisk in 4 tablespoons of bourbon.

In another large bowl, using an electric mixer, beat together the mascarpone, confectioner's sugar, heavy cream, vanilla, pumpkin pie spice, cinnamon, and remaining 2 tablespoons of bourbon until fluffy. (About 2 minutes.) Add the pumpkin puree and mix until blended and creamy. (At this point, it's recommended to put this mixture into a large piping bag. However, you can spoon the mixture into your glasses if you do not have a piping bag.)

Begin with 1/3 of the lady fingers. Quickly dip each ladyfinger into the chocolate coffee mixture (about 2 seconds) then arrange them in layers on the bottom of your glasses. Use 3 lady fingers for each layer. Next, pipe (or spoon) a layer of the pumpkin mixture on top of the cookies. Then, grate some of the chocolate onto the pumpkin mixture.

Repeat the layers twice more with the remaining ladyfingers, pumpkin mixture and chocolate. Cover and refrigerate for about four hours. Before serving, top with Reddi-Whip and additional grated chocolate.

With that, your fall-inspired, joy-filled dessert is ready!

Sweet Potato Shepard's Pie | inspiredbycharm.com

Cooking up a hardy dish this time of year makes my heart (and tummy) happy. It’s hard to beat savory flavors that meld and cook all day. They warm you up from the inside out. While this recipe for Sweet Potato Shepherd’s Pie doesn’t take all day to cook, it’s perfect for cooler autumn weather.

Sweet Potato Shepherds Pie | inspiredbycharm.com

I didn’t get shepherd’s pie very often as a kid. (I don’t think my mom was a huge fan.) When I did get it, it was definitely a treat. It may not be all that fancy, but there’s something about it that I’ve always loved.

Sweet Potato Shepherds Pie | inspiredbycharm.com

Sweet Potato Shepard's Pie | inspiredbycharm.com

For fall, I decided to recreate the classic recipe with a few changes. First, I substituted sweet potatoes for mashed potatoes. The slight sweetness works beautifully in this recipe and definitely makes this dish appropriate for the season.

For the meat, I used a combination of beef and pork sausage. The pork sausage turns up the flavor and works well with the sweet potatoes.

Sweet Potato Shepherds Pie | inspiredbycharm.com

Sweet Potato Shepherds Pie | inspiredbycharm.com

And if all of that wasn’t enough, I opted to make individual servings in these beyond-adorable mini white pumpkin cocottes from Stuab. Talk about presentation, right? It’s little touches like these that make a meal extra special.

Sweet Potato Shepherds Pie | inspiredbycharm.com

Serve this up with a quick salad, – and you’re set for dinner. (A couple cookies for dessert wouldn’t hurt, either.)

That’s it, friends. A seasonal flavor boost for shepherd’s pie that you’re going to love. Let’s get cooking.

Sweet Potato Shepherds Pie | inspiredbycharm.com

Sweet Potato Shepherd's Pie

serves about 8 people

Here's what you will need:
2 pounds sweet potatoes, cut into thirds
4 tablespoons butter, softened
1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1 pound ground meat (I used a combination of pork sausage and ground beef.)
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 medium yellow onion, chopped
2 cups mushrooms, chopped
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 cup beef broth
1 1/2 cups crushed tomatoes
1 teaspoon dried rosemary
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1 cup frozen corn
1 cup frozen peas and carrots
Grated Parmesan and fresh rosemary for garnish (optional)

In a pot of cold salted water, bring the sweet potatoes to a boil. Cook for about 20 minutes or until tender; then drain. When cool enough to handle. remove and discard the skins.

In a large bowl, mash the sweet potatoes with butter, Parmesan cheese, and salt and pepper. Set aside.

Preheat your oven to 400 degrees F. Lightly coat six to eight individual casserole pans (or one large pan) with nonstick cooking spray.

In a large skillet, cook the ground meat over medium-high heat, breaking it up with a spoon. Cook until no longer pink. Transfer the meat to a colander and drain well. Wipe out your skillet with a paper towel.

In the same skillet, heat oil over medium-high heat. Add the onion and mushrooms and cook until tender (4-5 minutes). Add the garlic and cook for 2 more minutes. Stir in the broth, crushed tomatoes, rosemary, and Worcestershire sauce. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to medium and simmer until thickened. Then stir in the cooked meat, corn, peas and carrots. Add salt and pepper to taste. Cook 2 minutes.

Divide this mixture among the prepare baking dishes. Spread the top with the mashed sweet potatoes. Place dishes onto a large baking sheet.

Bake uncovered for 15-20 minutes or until the tops are lightly browned. Top with Parmesan cheese before serving.

Zucchini Bread Blueberry Crisp | inspiredbycharm.com

Just a heads up: This post is going to meander a bit at the start, so please stick with me. The most important thing to remember is that this Zucchini Bread Blueberry Crisp (served warm with ice cream) is a sensational mashup of deliciousness. It may sound a bit strange, but it’s genius. Let me tell you how I learned about it.

Zucchini Bread Blueberry Crisp | inspiredbycharm.com

First, as you know, this is A Year of the Skillet on IBC. My goal is to cook or bake scrumptious skillet-inspired recipes. This lovely dessert is the latest chapter in this adventure. (In case you missed any of the previous recipes, you can catch up here.)

Secondly, this creation was inspired by my recent trip to Kennebunkport, Maine. While we managed to do a lot of fun things in Maine, for me, the highlight was when we visited Hidden Pond.

Zucchini Bread Blueberry Crisp | inspiredbycharm.com

Hidden Pond is a luxury resort made up of adorable cottages tucked into sixty acres of birch forest. (Yes, you rent a cottage, not a room). Each cottage has a private outdoor shower, and every morning fresh muffins, pastries, and coffee are delivered to you. You are even encouraged to pick fresh fruits and veggies from the resort garden. The motto is “Breathe Deeply.” It’s hard to imagine that a place such as this actually exists, but it does.

There is also a farm-to-table restaurant at Hidden Pond called Earth. The restaurant was kind enough to host our group in a private little shed that has a gold framed mural ceiling. I was giddy with excitement. We got to sample a huge portion of their menu family style, and everything was spot-on delicious, fresh, and unique.

So what does all of this have to do with zucchini bread pretending to be a blueberry crisp while sitting in a skillet? I’ll tell you. While Earth is known for their donut dessert (Yes, they have a desert of warm glazed donuts.- I told you this place is the bomb.), I was smitten with another dessert. Any guesses what it was? Yep, Zucchini Bread Blueberry Crisp.

Zucchini Bread Blueberry Crisp | inspiredbycharm.com

When this dessert was brought to the table, I was super excited to see a crisp with melting ice cream. However, when they said, “Zucchini bread,” I thought, “Gross.” (Zucchini bread is not among my favorites.) One bite (and then another and another and another), though, was enough for me to change my mind. The addition of the blueberry crisp made me a zucchini bread fan. Who knew?

Zucchini Bread Blueberry Crisp | inspiredbycharm.com

That great taste, plus the fact that this dessert was served in a skillet, was all I needed to recreate it at home.

As you might have guessed, combining zucchini bread and blueberry crisp into one dessert is pretty straight forward. Zucchini bread batter is topped with blueberries which are topped with crisp. This mashup is baked and then served warm with ice cream. That’s it.

While Earth didn’t share their recipe, I took two recipes that I had, put them together, and voila!

I love desserts like this: classic flavors, beautifully presented with a fun little twist. You need to give this one a try.

Okay, I guess there weren’t that many twists and turns in this post; I just had a lot to explain before I presented the recipe. – Isn’t it wonderful when a bunch of things you love somehow all manage to work together harmoniously.

Let’s get into the recipe.

Zucchini Bread Blueberry Crisp

Here's what you will need:
(makes 2 skillets)

1 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
2 eggs
1/2 cup vegetable oil
1 cup white sugar
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla
1 cup grated zucchini (seeds removed)

Crisp:
2 cups blueberries
1/4 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup quick-cooking oats
1/4 cup brown sugar, packed
1/4 cup sugar
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 pecans, finely chopped
1/2 stick unsalted butter, cubed and softened

Vanilla ice cream for serving

Begin by spraying two 12.5 inch oval skillets (or baking dishes) with baking spray. Set aside. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F.

In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, salt, baking powder, baking soda, and cinnamon.

In a large bowl, beat the eggs, oil, vanilla, and sugar with an electric mixer. Add the dry ingredients to the wet ones and mix until almost combined. Then, stir in the zucchini until just combined. Divide the batter evenly into the prepared skillets. Set aside.

In another bowl, combine the flour, oats, brown and white sugar, cinnamon, and pecans. Add the butter. Using your hand, pinch the ingredients together until the mixture looks crumbly.

Evenly divide 3/4 of the blueberries on top of the zucchini bread batter, pushing a few slightly into the batter. Then, divide the crisp mixture evenly over the blueberries. Top with the remaining blueberries.

Bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted near the center comes out clean. Allow the pans to cool slightly.

This dish is best served warm with vanilla ice cream.

That’s it, friends. From Earth to your table.

Another big thanks to Hidden Pond for a magical evening at Earth. If you are ever in Kennebunkport, Maine, do yourself a favor and stop at Hidden Pond. Even if it’s just to look around or grab a cocktail at their amazing bar, you’ll be so glad you did. Also, thanks to Sweet and Simple Magazine for making my trip possible.

My experience at Earth at Hidden Pond was complimentary. However, this post was not sponsored. Thank you for supporting the brands that support Inspired by Charm. As always, all of the opinions, thoughts, and ideas in this post are my own.

Just a heads up: This post is going to meander a bit at the start, so please stick with me. The most important thing to remember is that this Zucchini Bread Blueberry Crisp (served warm with ice cream) is a sensational mashup of deliciousness. It may sound a bit strange, but it’s genius. Fall Home Tour 2015 | Inspired by Charm

Welcome to fall at Inspired by Charm!

Every time one of these home tours rolls around, I find it hard to believe that another season is upon us. However, if there is one season I’m happy to make room for, it’s fall. With pumpkins (both for decorating and eating), slightly cooler temperatures, fall festivals, colorful leaves, and cozy evenings on the couch (Bring on the blankets and warm apple cider!), what’s not to love?

For this year’s Finding Fall Home Tour hosted by Laura or Finding Home Farms, I’m joining 16 other bloggers and Better Homes and Gardens! The previous destination on this festive tour was Liz Marie’s home from the Liz Marie Blog. I admire Liz and her style so much. It’s an honor to follow her in this series. If my house is your first stop, be sure to click back (start at the beginning here) to see what you missed.

Fall Home Tour 2015 | Inspired by Charm

If you are new to Inspired by Charm (IBC), let me extend a heartfelt welcome! My name is Michael. Here on IBC I share a little bit of everything. From recipes to home decor to DIY projects to entertaining tips, my goal is to inspire you with fun, doable, and colorful ideas.

Now that I’ve introduced myself, let’s begin the tour. If you have any questions, please leave them in comments. All of my paint colors can be found here. I’ve also linked up a few products at the end of this post to help you easily find some of things featured on this tour.

This is my living room. It’s probably my favorite space in my home (and it seems to be yours, too). I really love tweaking this room each season.

(Since I know someone will ask, I purchased the rug in the space was from CB2 a few years ago. Unfortunately, it is no longer available.)

I decided to begin my seasonal decorating with lots of fresh flowers. Even though I know they won’t last all season, you just can’t beat the real thing. (Plus, in a week or so, it will give me an excuse to get creative with my mantel again.) These flowers are from Farmgirl Flowers. They create rustic bouquets with in-season blooms and foliage. Given my limited access to unique flowers, they are a lifesaver. I want a shipment every week.

Over in my office, I decided to set up a little candy bar. With Halloween just around the corner, I thought this would be fun. However, having a plethora of candy within arms reach of my desk may not have been the best idea.

I even tucked in a few of my DIY Acorn Acorn Squash. You can learn how to make those here.

In the dining room, I opted for something less traditional in terms of fall colors. I focused on whites, greens, and deep purple.

In the kitchen (which I recently shared here), I kept things simple. A few pumpkins and some flowers give a seasonal touch.

Now, I didn’t do much fall decorating upstairs, so I’m going to show you those rooms at another time – hopefully in a week or so. However, I did want to point out a few things.

Fall Home Tour 2015 | Inspired by Charm

First, I picked up a new chair for my closet area. I’ve been looking for something for a while now, and thought this worked perfectly. Simply styled with a brass studded pillow, it makes a great addition to the space.

In my bedroom, I switched out the throw at the bottom of the bed with a faux fur blanket. I also added new artwork in the hall.

Fall Home Tour 2015 | Inspired by Charm

Secondly, I finally paid a little bit of attention to my second guest bedroom.

Fall Home Tour 2015 | Inspired by Charm

This was a goal from my last home tour. (It was likewise my goal to get my other bedroom painted, which I managed to do as well! Yay for progress. [More on that soon.]) I decided to clear some of the clutter and limit the color palette. While it still has a ways to go, it’s looking better already. What do you think?

bedroom decor

These two seem to think so.

Fall Home Tour 2015 | Inspired by Charm

And that, my friends, wraps up another home tour here on IBC! I can’t thank you enough for stopping by. I hope you enjoyed seeing my home and picked up a few ideas for your space.

Next up on the tour is Emily from Jones Design Company. Her space is beautifully dressed for fall, so be sure to head over there for more inspired ideas.

Also, our friends over at Better Homes and Gardens are joining us on this tour too! Check out their post here. If you’re decorating your home for fall, but sure to share some pictures on Instagram. These "acorns" made with acorn squash are a quick and easy DIY to help decorate your home for the fall. inspiredbycharm.com

This week I’m busy “fallifying” my house. In recent years I’ve been posting seasonal home tours with some blogger friends, and our fall tours kick off next week. It feels a tad early (especially since it’s been in the upper 80s this past week), but I keep reminding myself that it is almost mid-September.

With decorating on my brain and DIY twitches in my hands, I wanted to tackle a few fall-inspired DIYs this year. My first project: DIY Acorn Acorn Squash.

These "acorns" made with acorn squash are a quick and easy DIY to help decorate your home for the fall. inspiredbycharm.com

Aren’t they cool? I thought the squash would add an interesting touch to my decor. The idea is to make an acorn squash look like an acorn by wrapping rope around one end. (Acorn squash are great for this project since they resemble the nut portion of the acorn – hence their name.)

When it comes to including natural elements in my decor, I try to use the real things. (There are times, of course, when that’s not possible.) So, for these acorns, I opted to use real acorn squash that I picked up at the grocery store. However, feel free to use what works best for you: some mini pumpkins, faux gourds, or squash. You might even switch up the rope color. Do what suits your taste and decor. Make it your own.

On a side note: if you enjoy using natural elements in your home and love a good DIY, you will want to check out my friend Stacy’s (the fab blogger behind Not Just a Housewife) new book, Natural Accents. It’s packed with fun and inspiring projects for decorating your home using things from nature.

Natural Accents by Stacy Risenmay

I’m enjoying my copy of Natural Accents and have already dog-eared a few pages with directions for projects I plan to try. Head on over to your local bookstore or HERE on Amazon to buy the book.

Okay, back to my acorn squash. Let me show you how to make them. This is a super simple project.

Here’s what you will need:
acorn squash
rope
hot glue gun and glue sticks
scissors

Begin by breaking or cutting off the stem of the squash.

Next, apply a dab of hot glue to the top of the squash and attach the end of your rope. Create a small one inch loop with the rope and glue it to the top of the squash.

Then start wrapping the rope around the loop, applying hot glue when needed to hold the rope in place.

Continue wrapping the rope around the top of the squash, gluing occasionally to ensur that the rope stays in place. Once you’ve covered about 1/3 of the squash with rope, cut off the rope at an angle and glue the end of it to the squash.

Voila! Your Acorn Acorn Squash is complete.

Now, all you need to do is tuck the squash into your decor and you’ll have a unique and natural fall element for your space.

Again, feel free to get creative by changing the rope, painting the squash, using a pumpkin, etc. If you do give this a project a try, be sure to share it on Instagram. I love seeing your creations. Use the hashtag #myIBC.

Glazed Pumpkin Doughnut Muffins | Inspired by Charm

Okay friends, this is the first official post of Fall 2015! If you’re not ready, click away and join me back here when you’re up to embracing the change of seasons! Just kidding, please don’t go.

Anyone who knows me won’t be surprised that my first thought about an appropriate post to kick off autumn would be something pumpkin related. When a major pumpkin doughnut craving hit, I knew these Glazed Pumpkin Doughnut Muffins were the natural choice.

Glazed Pumpkin Doughnut Muffins | Inspired by Charm

In my locale we don’t have access to things like pumpkin doughnuts, so finding a way to satisfy a craving has to happen in my own kitchen. I found this recipe for Doughnut Muffins via Fine Cooking. It sounded good, but I decided to fall-ify it. That meant cutting it in half, adding pumpkin, and changing the glaze.

Glazed Pumpkin Doughnut Muffins | Inspired by Charm

You’ll notice that there are a lot of spices in these muffins. As I’ve mentioned on IBC, when it comes to baking with pumpkin, it’s the spices that create the pumpkin flavor we’ve come to know and love. This recipe contains the spice combination I like best.

If you like pumpkin muffins you should also check out my Pumpkin Maple Glazed Muffins and these Double Chocolate Chip Pumpkin Muffins.

I also realized that a standard glaze wouldn’t work for these muffins. The addition of cinnamon and pure maple syrup creates the perfect seasonal flavor combination to make these guys really scream fall.

If you can, serve the muffins warm. However, I don’t think you’ll get any complaints if they’re at room temperature. They are full of fall pumpkiny goodness.

Let’s go over the recipe.

Glazed Pumpkin Doughnut Muffins | Inspired by Charm
Glazed Pumpkin Doughnut Muffins

(Makes 18 muffins)

Here's what you will need:
3 cups all-purpose flour
2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon cloves
1/2 cup milk
1/2 cup buttermilk
10 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup brown sugar, lightly packed
2 large eggs
1 cup pumpkin puree
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Glaze:
2 cups powdered sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon
2 tablespoons pure maple syrup
2 tablespoons milk (or as much as needed)

Begin by preheating your oven to 400 degrees F.

In a medium-sized bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, pumpkin pie spice, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves. Set aside. In a separate small bowl, combine the milk and buttermilk. Set aside.

In a large mixing bowl, using an electric mixer on medium speed, whip together the butter and sugar until fluffy and combined, about 2 minutes. Then, mix in one egg at a time until combined. Blend in vanilla and pumpkin puree. Using a spatula, add the dry mixture in three separate batches, alternating with two additions of the milk mixture, mixing until just combined. Divide the batter into 18 paper-lined muffin cups. Filing each until nearly fully. Bake for 15-20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center of a muffin comes out clean. Transfer to a wire rack to cool.

In the meantime, prepare the glaze by whisking together the powdered sugar, cinnamon, maple syrup, and milk. Depending on the consistency, you may need to add more milk. When the muffins are cool (or almost cool) dip the muffin into the glaze to evenly coat the top. Lift the muffin out of the glaze and allow any access glaze to drip off. Allow the glaze to set or enjoy the muffins warm.
