And now for the dramatic conclusion of IBC’s Wall Decorating Series.

Only teasing. However, I am super pleased with how many of you seem to be enjoying this series. It’s been fun to give this topic the attention it deserves, and I hope that breaking it up into three chunks is making all of the information easier to digest.

If you’re new to this series, you can click here to start from the beginning. This three-part series was created to share ideas for decorating the walls of your home. Each idea in this series is inspired by things that have actually worked for me. Many of you might recognize the photos or ideas since they were on IBC at some point.

At any rate, I’m back today with my final five ideas to spruce up your walls. Let’s get this party started!

Local / Online Artists

In the previous posts, I shared a lot of ideas that involve art. So, at this point you might be saying, “That’s nice, but where do I find good art?” Well, that leads me to my next idea.

Thanks to the Internet, we all have access to a plethora of wonderful art at very affordable prices. As you may know from some of my other posts, my go-to source for quality art prints is Minted. Their selection is vast, their website functions well, and their prices are reasonable. They mostly sell art prints that were created by actual artists. With each print you get to learn a little more about the person who made it. To me, that’s important.

Ideas for Decorating Your Walls | inspiredbycharm.com

However, if Minted isn’t your style, there are plenty of other online sources for art. Etsy is one example. Do some research and find a source that works for you and your home.

Ideas for Decorating Your Walls | inspiredbycharm.com

In addition to the above online sources, check your local media for art festivals, galleries, and shows. Depending on the particular event, the prices can be pretty reasonable, plus you can also hunt down those one-of-kind pieces. Keep your mind and eyes open, too. Wall art doesn’t have to be something that fits into a frame. Try something new and different.

Ideas for Decorating Your Walls | inspiredbycharm.com

I should also give some love to Lindsay Letters and Funnelcloud Studios. While I enjoy many artists, these are certainly two of my favorites.

Go Botanical

I was a bit hesitant to include botanicals in this list because I don’t have too much experience with them. However, they are an important piece in the design equation.

If you follow current / modern design, you’ll notice lots of beautiful and unique wall planters. I’m a firm believe that every space needs a touch of nature, so being able to hang a plant or flower on a wall is a great option. Things like wall planters, planter wall pockets, living wreaths, etc. give you options for putting nature up on your walls.

Ideas for Decorating Your Walls | inspiredbycharm.com

One word of caution here: Think about the maintenance, especially if it is a living plant. How will you water and care for it? Obviously, it can be done; you just don’t want it to become a burden or destroy other things in your home.

Ideas for Decorating Your Walls | inspiredbycharm.com

However, walls exist outside, too, and I’ve certainly taken advantage of wall planters there. (Check out my hanging succulent planter and vertical hen and chick garden.)  Your options are endless for outdoor spaces.

Lighting

Another thing you might not think about when it comes to decorating your walls is lighting. I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but the selection of wall sconces is incredible these days.

A sconce can offer both light and an interesting or beautiful architectural embellishment. Naturally, I recommend checking out places like Restoration Hardware, West Elm, and even Urban Outfitters.

Whether you have the hardwiring in place in your wall or need a fixture you can plug in, there are plenty of options to suit your decor. You can even DIY something like I did with the wood wall bracket in my entryway.

Shelving

As I was writing this series and looking around my home, I noticed that I have used a lot of shelving to decorate my walls. This might be viewed as furniture by some people, but I consider it “wall decor” and an essential part of this list.

Ideas for Decorating Your Walls | inspiredbycharm.com

To illustrate, take a look at the large white shelves in my office / living room. Yes, they are functional, but over the years I’ve had great fun arranging them in unique ways. They are definitely part of the decor for my walls.

Ideas for Decorating Your Walls | inspiredbycharm.com

A more obvious wall decor shelf would be the two white shelves in my dining room. Made with pine boards and brackets, these shelves continue to be one of my favorite projects (tutorial here) and a fun space to decorate. Shelves such as these function well in a dining room, kitchen, or office where you have beautiful, unique, or functional things you want to display.

Ideas for Decorating Your Walls | inspiredbycharm.com

Another shelving example is in my upstairs hallway. For less than $30, I was able to create these simple picture ledges to hold art, souvenirs, and other small objects.

Ideas for Decorating Your Walls | inspiredbycharm.com

This option is excellent for anyone who tends to change things frequently. Since no nails are required for displaying art, you can switch things up as often as you like.

Organization

And finally, organization. This idea touches on shelving and functional objects, but I felt it deserved its own category.

Wall decor that functions as organization is ideal for spaces in your home where lots of activity is happening, such as the kitchen, office, craft room, and bathroom. These are places where there might be lots of little items and supplies that you use frequently and want to access easily so they need a designated spot.

Ideas for Decorating Your Walls | inspiredbycharm.com

What immediately comes to mind when I talk about this is the pegboard organizer in my kitchen. I’m not the most organized person, but this area reminds me of the importance of being organized. I use it each and every day, and I’m never hunting for things when I need them. I also love the way it looks and that it takes up minimal space.

Ideas for Decorating Your Walls | inspiredbycharm.com

However, don’t worry if pegboards aren’t your style. There are plenty of wall organizing units and DIY projects to suit your space and storage needs.

And with that, my list of ideas is complete. At least for now.

It’s your turn to go forth and decorate. With 15 ideas and a couple bonus tips, you now have plenty of inspiration to get something on those blank walls.

As always, if you have more ideas or suggestions, join in the conversation and share them in the comments. I’ve enjoyed putting this list together and hope it’s helpful.

And now for the dramatic conclusion of IBC’s Wall Decorating Series. Only teasing. However, I am super pleased with how many of you seem to be enjoying this series. It’s been fun to give this topic the attention it deserves, and I hope that breaking it up into three chunks is making all of the […]

This Veggie Pizza (shaped like a wreath) is a delicious, easy, and beautiful appetizer recipe you’ll come to love again and again.

With February behind us, my thoughts are turning to spring. I’m excited about the warmer weather, longer days, and splash of color, but I’m also ready for a new season of food (and this veggie pizza recipe)!

This Veggie Pizza Wreath is an easy and beautiful #appetizer #recipe! #veggie #pizza

Veggie Pizza:

As we come out of hibernation, we want lighter fare and fresh veggies. Right? Inspired by the upcoming change of season, and with spring holidays such as Easter and Mother’s Day on my mind, I always like to have a few ideas for simple nibbles.

One of my favorite quick and flavorful appetizers is veggie pizza. My dad’s wife makes this at least once or twice in the summer, and it’s always something I look forward to.

Inspired by spring, I decided to switch up the standard veggie pizza shape. Crescent rolls form the crust of this pizza. Simply slice and arrange them in a circular pattern on a round pizza tray to create a wreath shape.

What Do You Put on Veggie Pizza?

Veggie Pizza Wreath | inspiredbycharm.com

I used a variety of veggies for my pizza, including broccoli, cauliflower, orange bell pepper, green onions, radishes, and carrots. I kept things mostly orange and green for a light and fresh look.

However, you’re free to use whatever vegetables you and your family love. This pizza is also a great way to use up any miscellaneous fresh veggies.

Let me walk you through the recipe.

How to Make Veggie Pizza:

Begin by preheating your oven to 350 degrees F. Remove crescent rolls from the package. Do not unroll. Cut each roll into eight slices. Arrange in a circle on an ungreased 14-inch round pan.

For your convenience, there is a full ingredient list and detailed instructions in the printable recipe card below.

Bake for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown. Cool on the pan for at least 5 minutes before carefully removing to a serving plate to cool completely.

In a small bowl, beat together the cream cheese, sour cream, mayonnaise, and ranch dressing mix until smooth. Then, spread this mixture over the baked rolls. Top with assorted vegetables and cheese. Chill for an hour in the refrigerator before serving.

Baked with Lucky Charms cereal, these Lucky Charms Cupcakes are a creative and tasty St. Patrick’s Day treat.

But to be honest, I love to make them any time of the year!

Lucky Charms Cupcakes:

Lucky Charms Cupcakes | inspiredbycharm.com

Like lots of folks, there are days when I could spend hours in the kitchen whipping up something involved and elaborate. Then there are days when I’m pressed for time and need something quick and easy. Even on those latter days, I still want a unique dish I’m proud to share or serve. And obviously, it must taste delicious.

While I’ve posted many such recipes here on IBC, today I’m popping in to share one of those pressed-for-time-but-still-want-something-cute-and-delicious recipes.

Let me introduce my Lucky Charms Cupcakes.

st patricks day cupcakes

Lucky Charms Cupcakes | inspiredbycharm.com

Aren’t they the best?

Although these aren’t St. Patrick’s Day specific, I thought that this was the time to share this recipe because they fit the holiday. Honestly, I could eat Lucky Charms every day of the week. (Even as a 30-something-year-old man, they are still my favorite breakfast cereal.) So why not have Lucky Charms Cupcakes any day of the week?

How to Make Lucky Charms Cupcakes:

As I was saying, this recipe couldn’t get any easier. I’m using a boxed white cake mix. Yep, and I don’t mind one bit. In some instances, I actually prefer boxed mixes, and for this recipe it works really well.

Lucky Charms Cupcakes | inspiredbycharm.com

For the cupcakes, you simply follow the directions on the package. Then, when your cake batter is ready, you fold in some Lucky Charms. They bake up very nicely in the batter. The marshmallows melt to create color streaks and the other pieces soften to add a nice texture. I love it.

Lucky Charms Cupcakes | inspiredbycharm.com

To top off these cupcakes, I’m using my basic buttercream recipe. It’s simple to do, so take the time to make the frosting from scratch. While I’m cool with using a box cake mix, I’m not cool with using ready-made frosting. The real deal makes a noticeable difference.

For this frosting, I wanted a pale green color. I have a set of the AmeriColor gel food coloring (which I love and recommend). I used the leaf green. To ensure I achieved the right tint, I used a toothpick to add the tiniest amount of color. I think it’s absolutely perfect.

After I piped on the icing with a star tip, I needed a few more Lucky Charms to garnish these cupcakes. I just tucked a dozen or so cereal pieces right into the frosting.

And voila!

Skip the pot of gold. I’ll take a dozen of these at the end of my rainbow.

Baked with Lucky Charms cereal, these Lucky Charms Cupcakes are a creative and tasty St. Patrick's Day treat.

Ingredients

  • 1 box white cake mix
  • 1 cup milk
  • 3 egg whites
  • 1/4 cup oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 cups Lucky Charms cereal
Buttercream Frosting

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F and line two cupcake pans with paper liners.
  • Begin by preparing your cupcakes according to the box directions. For this particular mix, combine the cake mix, milk, eggs whites, oil, and vanilla extract in a large bowl. With your mixer on medium speed, beat for about two minutes. (I used Duncan Hines Classic White Cake mix. I substituted milk for the water and added 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract. Please follow the directions on your particular package.)
  • With the batter ready, gently fold in 2 cups of Lucky Charms cereal until combined.
  • Bake the cupcakes for 18-21 minutes or until a toothpick inserted near the center comes out clean. Cool on a wire rack for about five minutes. Then, remove the cupcakes from the pan to continue cooling.
  • Meanwhile, prepare the buttercream frosting. In a bowl of a stand mixer with a paddle attachment, cream together the vegetable shortening and butter for 3-4 minutes. Flavor with vanilla extract, almond extract, and salt. Mix to combine. With the mixer on low, begin slowly adding the confectioners' sugar, about one cup at a time. Slowly add the milk as needed to achieve the desired consistency. Add food coloring to adjust the color.
  • Use a piping bag and star tip to frost the cooled cupcakes. (Alternatively, you can skip the piping process and use a knife or spatula to frost.) Garnish with Lucky Charms cereal.

This post is sponsored by Carnival Cruise Lines.

Life is full of surprises. When my house was a bed and breakfast, I had hundreds of people coming and going through my door. During the past few years, however, I haven’t had many overnight guests. There are times I miss the buzz of activity in my home, but for the most part, I’m happy that my guests are a select few.

How to Create the Ultimate Guest Bedroom

Going to school for hospitality management, running a bed and breakfast, and having some recent opportunities to travel, I’ve learned a thing or two about hospitality. I don’t know about you, but I love traveling. That’s why when Carnival Cruise Lines invited me to team up with them this year, I couldn’t have been more eager. While there is no place like home, I love the experience of staying somewhere else, especially when that luxurious place is the the middle of the Caribbean.

After taking two different Carnival cruises, I’ve certainly come to appreciate their state room amenities. They offer 24-hour room service, nightly turndown service, cozy linens, a television (not that you’ll need it much with all of the activities on board), and so much more. Basically, you get all of the comforts of home and then some.

I loved so many things about cruising with Carnival, but a couple items stand out in relation to my room. First of all, the room attendants are always around. Whether you need more towels, want your clothes laundered / pressed, or have a question about the ship, they are there to help. (I’m honestly trying to figure out how to get this kind of service at my own house.) They also typically stop by your room twice a day to provide clean towels, make your bed, etc. Another thing I love is the nightly turndown service. If you’ve experienced this at a hotel or on a cruise, it’s certainly one of those details that make you feel like a king (or queen). In addition to the towels shaped into animals, the service includes a little Fun Times guide put together by Carnival for each day of the cruise. The guides detail all of the onboard activities, what time places are open, what the weather forecast is, and more. Each evening I found myself lying in bed planning out the next day. It’s the best.

Anyway, I sort of went off on a tangent there. Inspired by vacations and my professional experience in hospitality, I thought I’d share a few ideas to make your own guest room ready for visitors. These little touches require minimal time and money, but they will help you welcome your guests. Whether you implement one or all of these ideas, your guests are certain to feel special and pampered.

Guest Room Ready | How to Create the Ultimate Guest Bedroom with inspiredbycharm.com

Let’s get started!

Guest Bedroom: The Bed

First, consider the basics – the bed linens. While you don’t need the most expensive brand out there, give the linens a test drive. Make sure they are comfortable and feel a bit luxurious. I recommend white because it’s easy to care for and helps to keep a space bright and cheerful.

Guest Room Ready | How to Create the Ultimate Guest Bedroom with inspiredbycharm.com

Have an extra blanket handy in case your guests get chilly. A few extra pillows are nice as well to ensure the comfort of your guests.

Guest Room Ready | How to Create the Ultimate Guest Bedroom with inspiredbycharm.com

Guest Bedroom: Decorative Accessories

A bedside reading lamp is a must. In fact, having a couple lighting options is great. If possible, when looking into options, try to find something that can be dimmed or has different lighting levels.

Guest Room Ready | How to Create the Ultimate Guest Bedroom with inspiredbycharm.com

Have a mirror in the room. Ideally, a full-size one.

Guest Room Ready | How to Create the Ultimate Guest Bedroom with inspiredbycharm.com

Guest Room Ready | How to Create the Ultimate Guest Bedroom with inspiredbycharm.com

Also, as you decorate your guest room, be sure to leave some open areas. More than likely your guests will need a space to set out their own things. It’s also a good idea to have a place available for them to set their luggage. This can be something as simple as a bench or chair. A foldable luggage stand is another option. It will discourage guests from setting their possibly-dirty luggage on those beautiful white bed linens.

Guest Bedroom: Personal Items

Although it’s assumed that your visitors will bring everything they need for their visit, have a few personal care items tucked away just in case. Fill a box or a basket with soap, shampoo, toothbrushes, deodorant, stain-eraser stick, etc. Put the box or basket in a drawer or bedside table and let your guests know it’s there if they need it.

Guest Room Ready | How to Create the Ultimate Guest Bedroom with inspiredbycharm.com

It’s also helpful to have some basic medical items available. A few things to take away a headache, clear up indigestion, stop a cough, etc. are likely to be appreciated. Sometimes people can be embarrassed to ask for these things. If they are available, they won’t have to ask.

Guest Room Ready | How to Create the Ultimate Guest Bedroom with inspiredbycharm.com

I also like to set out lotions or sprays to help guests create a spa-like experience if they wish. If you choose things in unique containers, they can double as room accessories.

Guest Bedroom: Entertainment

Similar to the Fun Time brochures Carnival puts in their state rooms each evening, having a few magazines or books in the bedroom can give your guests some evening entertainment and a way to rest their brains before bed. A crossword or Sudoku puzzle book would be nice as well.

Guest Room Ready | How to Create the Ultimate Guest Bedroom with inspiredbycharm.com

Guest Room Ready | How to Create the Ultimate Guest Bedroom with inspiredbycharm.com

I also like to have a pen and small notebook somewhere in the room. This is handy for your guests, and it gives you a place to leave your guest a welcome note if you’d like.

Guest Bedroom: Connectivity

Another thing I love about cruising with Carnival is that they have wifi. While I try to stay offline as much as possible while on a cruise, I do need to go online now and again for work. Plus, it’s important to me to have a way to connect with family in case of emergency.

Guest Room Ready | How to Create the Ultimate Guest Bedroom with inspiredbycharm.com

It’s also safe to assume that your guests may want to connect while they are visiting. If you do have a wifi password, be sure to write it down somewhere (maybe in that little notebook you provided) and place it in the room. This is especially important if the password is complicated.

Guest Bedroom: Snacks

Have you ever stayed with someone and had a craving for a midnight snack but didn’t want to tip toe down to the kitchen? Prevent this from happening to your guests, by providing them with a few nibbles in their room. Things like snack bars and apples are great choices.

Guest Room Ready | How to Create the Ultimate Guest Bedroom with inspiredbycharm.com

Guest Room Ready | How to Create the Ultimate Guest Bedroom with inspiredbycharm.com

Making water available is another great idea. Whether it’s bottled water or a pitcher of water with glasses, this is a touch your guests will certainly appreciate.

Guest Room Ready | How to Create the Ultimate Guest Bedroom with inspiredbycharm.com

And if you really want to “wow” them, leave a few pieces of fine chocolate on their nightstand. Who doesn’t enjoy a piece of chocolate at the end of the day?

Guest Bedroom: Personalized Extras

Finally, let’s touch on a few extra amenities.

If you’re really looking to make your guests feel special, or maybe they are celebrating a special occasion, why not add some wine or champagne to their room? Be sure to include a couple glasses, and if necessary, a corkscrew to open the bottle.

Guest Room Ready | How to Create the Ultimate Guest Bedroom with inspiredbycharm.com

Fresh flowers can likewise add a thoughtful touch to a room. You can find inexpensive bouquets at the grocery store. However, if you don’t want to buy flowers every time you have a guest, a low maintenance plant that can stay in the room will certainly do the trick.

Guest Room Ready | How to Create the Ultimate Guest Bedroom with inspiredbycharm.com

Guest Room Ready | How to Create the Ultimate Guest Bedroom with inspiredbycharm.com

Other things like candles (Don’t forget the matches.), chocolate-covered strawberries, bathrobes, or slippers can be added to show your guests how much you care.

Now, I know this sounds like a lot, but don’t feel overwhelmed or that you must to all of these things to make your guests feel comfortable in your home. Build your guest room over time. Even one or two of these ideas will have your visitors feeling at home.

Remember, as you’re creating or improving your guest room, think about the things that you most enjoy having in your room when you travel. That’s always a good place to start.

And for more details about all of Carnival’s fabulous accommodations, head on over to their website.

Last week I started a three-part series here on IBC to share Ideas for Decorating Your Walls. If you missed that post, you’ll probably want to check it out since it includes a brief introduction about why I’m writing this and how to better use these ideas. You can find it here.

If you saw that post and have been waiting on the edge of your seat for Part 2 *insert sarcasm here*, then today is your lucky day.

Creative Wall Decor Ideas:

As I mentioned last week, sometimes I struggle with what to put on my walls. Assuming that I’m not alone in this struggle, I’ve created this series so you can find a few of my ideas in one easy-to-find location. If you’ve been following IBC for some time, you’ve probably seen most of these applications once or twice. However, I thought it would be helpful to have them in one place.

So without further ado, let’s continue.

Homemade / DIY Wall Art

This might be an obvious solution, but you can make something to put on your wall. I’m pretty sure that a few of you are rolling your eyes at the idea of homemade art. Trust me, I get it. I’ve seen my fair share of not-so-great homemade art. However, art is subjective. So, if you do like to DIY, here are a few ideas.

Ideas for Decorating Your Walls | inspiredbycharm.com

First, try framing fabric. Here, I used a striped fabric in my entryway to create instant artwork in some really beautiful frames.

Ideas for Decorating Your Walls | inspiredbycharm.com

Ideas for Decorating Your Walls | inspiredbycharm.com

You can also get creative with photographs and turn them into art. Try creating a collage or framing a collection of related images (like a vacation or special event) in a unique way.

Ideas for Decorating Your Walls | inspiredbycharm.com

Lastly, look to modern and / or abstract art for DIY inspiration. Art with graphic lines or abstract brushstrokes can be more easily replicated than something like the Mona Lisa. Here, I used a circle hole punch to create a simple and inexpensive piece of “art” that works wonderfully in my bedroom. Get creative and have fun.

Children’s Art for Wall Decor

Speaking of homemade and DIY art, kids can be a wonderful source of one-of-a-kind decorations for your walls. In my kitchen I have a trio of frames with art created by my nephew when he was a toddler. It began as large finger painting that that I cut down to size.

Ideas for Decorating Your Walls | inspiredbycharm.com

I just popped the art into some old frames I painted white and hung them up on the wall. They’ve been there for years and continue to be among the most meaningful pieces of art in my home.

Plates as Wall Decor

Since we are in the kitchen, let’s talk about another unique element that can be used as wall decor: plates! I know this isn’t a revolutionary idea, but I think it’s one that’s often forgotten. (That’s why I’m here to remind you.)
Now, decorating with plates doesn’t have to be done in that stuffy old-fashioned way that you’re envisioning. Take some time and search “plate decor” on Pinterest and you’ll discover a plethora of ideas from traditional to modern.

Ideas for Decorating Your Walls | inspiredbycharm.com

In my kitchen, I kept things simple by stacking three large white platters on an odd wall. Sticking with platters that have a similar circle shape and using white as a consistent color kept things organized and modern.

Ideas for Decorating Your Walls | inspiredbycharm.com

In my dining room I had fun mixing together mismatched plates and mirrors to create an eclectic collection.

Ideas for Decorating Your Walls | inspiredbycharm.com

As you can imagine, the options are endless here. Even hanging up a single ornate plate can be a fabulous look.

I also wanted to mention my method for hanging these plates. For the larger plates in the kitchen, I used these steel plate hangers. To hang the smaller plates in the dining room, I used these “invisible” adhesive disc hangers. Both hanging options come in various sizes. Be sure to use the hanger recommended for your particular plate size.

Wall Decor Idea: Mirrors

Again, it’s not a new idea, but definitely keep mirrors in mind when decorating the walls of your home.

Ideas for Decorating Your Walls | inspiredbycharm.com

Consider mirrors for darker areas of your home. They reflect natural sunlight so placing them on the wall opposite a window can help a room feel bigger and brighter.

Ideas for Decorating Your Walls | inspiredbycharm.com

Ideas for Decorating Your Walls | inspiredbycharm.com

Also, don’t overlook their functionality. Full length mirrors are ideal for bedrooms and hallways. It’s also nice to have a mirror somewhere near the door of your home so you can grab a quick look at yourself before popping out the door for a big meeting or event.

Go Vintage with your Wall Decor

A vintage element always comes into play when I’m pulling together a room. So naturally, using a touch of vintage in your wall decor is a must.

Why? Well, as much as I love the idea of something new, there is something about a vintage or thrifted item that you just can’t buy in a store. Vintage pieces have history, they have a story to tell. I also like the fact that when you go vintage, you’re lessening the chance that your neighbor or relative has the same piece.

Ideas for Decorating Your Walls | inspiredbycharm.com

Hit up your local thrift stores and antique shops to find these treasures. Remember that the framing can always be adjusted or changed to match your decor. Also keep in mind that the art can be switched up should you find a cool frame. When shopping, think about the color scheme or feel of your room. The art doesn’t have to match perfectly, but something about it should tie it into the room.

Ideas for Decorating Your Walls | inspiredbycharm.com

For a bit of vintage art in my own home, I was lucky enough to inherit the original 100-year-old blueprints for my house. A trio of them hangs on the landing of my staircase. I’ve also incorporated a couple vintage portraits in my bedroom gallery wall. Initially, I was attracted to these pieces because of their unique shape, size, and gold frames, but I’ve come to love the little portraits inside just as much.

Ideas for Decorating Your Walls | inspiredbycharm.com

I told you these vintage pieces already have a story.

And that concludes Part 2 of this wall decor ideas miniseries. I’ll be back soon with a few more ideas to wrap things up. See you then.

Last week I started a three-part series here on IBC to share Ideas for Decorating Your Walls. If you missed that post, you’ll probably want to check it out since it includes a brief introduction about why I’m writing this and how to better use these ideas. You can find it here. If you saw […]

I have two new and very fun things to share with you today. If there was ever a time to be excited, that time is now.

One of the things is today’s DIY: I’m going to teach you how to make some colorful and artsy plates! Inspired by the painted dinnerware I spied on Pinterest, I decided to make my own version, and I’m thrilled with the results. In fact, I was so pleased that after finishing the set, I was already thinking about more variations, colors, patterns, etc. That means, of course, that I have to share my plates with you.

Brushstroke Painted Plates | inspiredbycharm.com
The second thing I’m pumped to tell you about is these delicious new snack bars. They are called Curate. You’re getting the exclusive here on IBC because they are just now hitting the stores. I was lucky enough to sample them ahead of time, and they might be my new favorite snack.

Brushstroke Painted Plates | inspiredbycharm.com

Curate snack bars bring unique ingredients and bold flavors together to create a distinctive snacking experience. For example, a few of the bars have ingredients like balsamic vinegar and quinoa. It may sound strange, but the combination is brilliant, and it creates a flavor party in your mouth. And if that’s not enough to love, Curate bars contain protein, plant-based fiber, and sweetener from natural sources. These bars are also non-GMO, gluten-free, and have no artificial preservatives, flavors, or colors. I also love the texture of these bars. It feels fresh and homemade. Bam! Now that’s some healthy snacking. There are currently six flavors (You can explore them all on their website.) I’m still sampling them, but my current favorite is the Dark & Tempting. And that’s exactly how I would describe the flavor. So good!

Brushstroke Painted Plates | inspiredbycharm.com

Okay. So, with snacks in hand, I think it’s time to grab our paint and brushes and get creating!

Brushstroke Painted Plates | inspiredbycharm.com

As I said above, today’s project is these artful Brushstroke Painted Plates. I thought it was especially fitting to share them with the Curate bars since both represent brilliant and unique collaborations. One of color, one of flavor.

A few things to note before we get started. For the plates, inexpensive porcelain or ceramic ones work great. I used round dessert plates I found at Target. It’s okay if the plates have a shiny finish. Also, before painting, clean the surface of each plate with alcohol.

Secondly, you’ll need multi-surface premium paint. You do not want acrylic. This is the paint pot set at the craft store. I liked the variety of colors. Just be sure to read the package. There should be instructions on how to cure the paint. The paint I bought is non-toxic and dishwasher safe on the top-rack. If your plates will be used with food, this is important.

Finally, have fun with colors, patterns, designs, and brushstrokes. Inspired by these snack bars and the colors in my dining room, I went for bold! However, do what works for you. I’m just giving you the technique.

Let’s do this!

Brushstroke Painted Plates | inspiredbycharm.com

Brushstroke Painted Plates

You will need:
Assorted Paints
Paint brushes
Dinner plates (porcelain or ceramic)

Brushstroke Painted Plates | inspiredbycharm.com

Begin by cleaning your plates. (Check the directions on your paint.) Usually the surface can be quickly cleaned with alcohol.

Now you’re ready to paint. For this particular brushstroke pattern*, I chose six different colors. I layered on the paint one color at a time. For the brushstrokes, I found it best to keep my hands relaxed and loose. And don’t worry, the colors can be applied in any order.

Brushstroke Painted Plates | inspiredbycharm.com

Brushstroke Painted Plates | inspiredbycharm.com

I allowed a bit of drying time between colors because I didn’t want them to bleed / blend into each other too much (though in some places it did, and I’m totally cool with that). Just continue to layer on your colors until you’re pleased with the design.

Brushstroke Painted Plates | inspiredbycharm.com

Another quick tip: Toward the end of your color layering, go back in with your first and second colors and add another stroke of each to the plate. This makes the order of the color layers appear random.

Brushstroke Painted Plates | inspiredbycharm.com

For the finishing touch on my design, I added a little paint splatter*. With six plates and six colors, I splattered each plate with a different color. To create the splatter, just add a tiny bit of water to some of your paint. The goal is to make the paint a bit more runny without making it transparent. Dip a brush into the paint and then run your finger along the bristles to splatter the paint onto the plate.

Brushstroke Painted Plates | inspiredbycharm.com

*With any of these techniques, you may want to practice on paper before moving to your plate. However, the paint is water-based, so if you allow your paint to dry between colors, you can easily wipe off any mistakes.

Brushstroke Painted Plates | inspiredbycharm.com

Once you’re happy with your designs, allow the paint to dry. To fully cure the paint, follow the directions on your paint packaging. For my particular paint, I put my plates in a cool oven and then turned the heat to 350 degrees F for 30 minutes. I then turned the oven off and allowed the plates to cool in the oven.

Brushstroke Painted Plates | inspiredbycharm.com

With that, my Brushstroke Painted Plates were complete!

Brushstroke Painted Plates | inspiredbycharm.com

Now, I don’t know about you, but I’m totally in love with this color scheme and pattern. I do realize these are a bit bold and modern, but that’s the beauty of this project. You can easily modify it to match your decor, color scheme, and style.

For example, when I was talking with a friend, he mentioned how much he’d love these done in blacks, grays, and a touch of gold. I agree!

Brushstroke Painted Plates | inspiredbycharm.com

If you think about it, it’s kind of like the variety of Curate bars! (You knew I had to tie this all back together, right?) By combining different elements, you can really create something beautiful and interesting. And, with plenty of options, there’s something out there for everyone’s tastes.

Even though decorating has always been a hobby of mine (and part of my business during the past several years), there are still certain things about it that cause me to struggle. (This is probably obvious since it can take me over a year to “complete” a room.) One of the things that’s sometimes challenging is wall decor. While I’ve had several “instant” successes throughout my spaces, there are areas that have taken time and multiple attempts.

Since I suspect I’m not the only one who struggles with this (Raise your hand if you have an empty wall in your house.), I thought some ideas for decorating walls might be helpful. As I was pulling together this list, I quickly realized how long it was (and how much I had to say), so I’m splitting my ideas into a three-part series. Stay tuned for Parts 2 and 3 in the coming weeks.

Before we dive in, I want to share two things that excite me about this list. First, the ideas suit a variety of budgets. Whether you prefer to buy something, hang it up, and be done with it, or you like to save a few bucks and DIY, there’s something for you. Secondly, and most importantly, all of these ideas are things I’ve actually done in my home or spaces I’ve decorated. I’m not just pulling pretty pictures from online sources. These are things that have worked well for me, and I’m confident they will work for you, too.

Oh, and one more thing, these are just ideas to get you started. You don’t need to do them exactly as I did. Take these tips and tricks and make them work for you, your home, and your style. Sounds good?

Let’s get into it.

Gallery Wall

Naturally, I had to start with a gallery wall as I have three of them in my house. Gallery walls have been around forever, but have recently become somewhat trendy. I’m not going to explain how to create one, but if you do a quick search on Pinterest or Google, you’ll find plenty of brilliant tutorials to guide you through the process.

Ideas for Decorating Your Walls | inspiredbycharm.com

Gallery walls can be implemented in a variety of ways: Some just use frames, while others use frames and objects. Some are very organized, while others are more organic. Some gallery walls use a consistent frame style or color, and others mix it all up. Before you get started on your gallery wall, I suggest looking at magazines or on Pinterest for inspiration. First figure out what you want. Putting together a gallery wall can be a bit daunting, but having a vision will help.

Ideas for Decorating Your Walls | inspiredbycharm.com

As you can see in the images here, I created a gallery wall in my hallway using all white frames with a mix of colorful prints and photos. The color of the frames gives the collection order, but the way the frames are hung is a bit organic.

Ideas for Decorating Your Walls | inspiredbycharm.com

Ideas for Decorating Your Walls | inspiredbycharm.com

In the closet area of my bedroom, I used a variety of frames and objects to create a more playful gallery wall. To keep things from getting too busy, I kept all of the items in one area of the wall.

The final gallery wall in my home leads me to my next idea.

Photos

Photographs are a wonderful way to add art to your wall. The best part about this option is that anyone can do this, and it’s usually inexpensive.

Ideas for Decorating Your Walls | inspiredbycharm.com

My approach to creating the gallery wall in my living room was very methodical. I used the same frames and evenly spaced them out on one wall. All of the frames hold photographs that I took on my travels. I call it my Wanderlust Wall.

As I said above, anyone can do this, and I mean that. While I do have great camera equipment to photograph images for the blog, several of the photos on my gallery wall were taken with my iPhone camera. I just use a phone application (more on that later) to tweak the photos to make them look a bit more professional, and then I have the photos printed for a couple bucks. It’s really that simple.

Ideas for Decorating Your Walls | inspiredbycharm.com

And if you don’t travel, don’t worry. Take pictures of your family, your local park, or even your own backyard. Inspiration can be found anywhere. You can do it!

My frames were from Target, so the total cost of covering this entire wall was less than $100. Love that.

I should also mention that if you like this look, but doubt your photography skills, check out Etsy (or similar online sources). Many photographers sell prints and some are very reasonably priced.

Free Printables

Okay, one more gallery wall, and then we’ll move on. (I told you I love gallery walls!) I saved this wall until now because I needed it to help explain my next source for wall decor.

Ideas for Decorating Your Walls | inspiredbycharm.com

This is a wall I created for a living room I decorated this past fall. The homeowner wanted a gallery wall, but didn’t have a lot of art to fill the frames. So what do you do when you have a plan, have the frames, haven’t taken any photos, and need some art to fill them? The answer: free printables.

I hate to direct you to Pinterest again, but if you need free art, head to Pinterest. Do a search for “free art printables” and you’ll have enough beautiful prints to decorate every room in your home. Simply download the image and print it out.

Ideas for Decorating Your Walls | inspiredbycharm.com

One word of caution: Make sure that the art you want to print was intended to be free. Being a self-employed creator, I’m bummed when people take advantage of others’ work and don’t pay for things that should be paid for. So just be conscious of that. Please and thank you.

For the purposes of this application, the homeowner wanted to create a gallery wall with some of her own images, but due to our tight schedule, was unable to get photos in time. So I found some free printables in the color scheme / style of the room that will look chic until she has a chance to replace them.

Ideas for Decorating Your Walls | inspiredbycharm.com

BONUS IDEA: I also used metallic scrapbook paper to fill several of the frames to create unique geometric / modern art.

Other than the scrapbook paper, all of the art for this gallery wall was free, including the adorable fish her son colored for me.

Functional Wall Decor

Okay, let’s switch gears and talk about functional wall decor. My home office is the perfect example. In that space, I’ve created three wall decor ideas that work for me. ( And by “work for me”, I mean they serve a real purpose.)

Ideas for Decorating Your Walls | inspiredbycharm.com

First, I have a collection of clipboards that hold important documents as well as notepads for list making. This is awesome for an office space and serves me very well. Alternatively this could be a great option in a family room to hold children’s artwork as it can easily be switched out when something new comes in. It also could be fun in a child’s room to display art, magazine clippings, awards, etc.

Ideas for Decorating Your Walls | inspiredbycharm.com

Second, I have a huge calendar. While this is highly functional, it also makes a graphic statement in my space.

Ideas for Decorating Your Walls | inspiredbycharm.com

Finally, my DIY bulletin board. This is something I made several years ago. Not only is it a handy place for tacking up inspiration and mementos, but it’s a fun space to decorate for the seasons. Plus, it doubles as decor.

Decorative Objects

Now, don’t think that all wall decor needs to be flat artwork, canvases, or mirrors. To be honest if you can figure out how to hang something on your wall, it’s officially wall decor. I’m not saying you should do that, so let me give you a few more specific ideas.

First, woven wall hangings have become extremely popular lately. Whether you’re in Target or shopping your favorite home decor store, you’re going to come across some style of wall hanging. What’s funny is that when I got my first one, my Mom chuckled and said she remembered making them when she was younger. (Everything comes back around, people.)

Ideas for Decorating Your Walls | inspiredbycharm.com

Ideas for Decorating Your Walls | inspiredbycharm.com

While they are not for everyone or every space, I think they can add texture, organic softness, and a touch of quirkiness to a room. A woven wall hanging can break up the standard hardness of traditional frames and square artwork that tend to populate our walls.

If wall hangings aren’t your thing, don’t worry, I have a couple more options. Much like gallery walls, three-dimensional wall art has become a popular home accessory in recent years. Available in a variety of styles, examples are the gold starbursts I have in my dining room and the basket tray I have hanging upstairs. Again, places like Target and West Elm are good sources for these types of objects, but I’m guessing your favorite home decor retailer carries something similar.

Ideas for Decorating Your Walls | inspiredbycharm.com

Ideas for Decorating Your Walls | inspiredbycharm.com

And finally, this list would not be complete without mentioning Kevin. Kevin is the faux ceramic moose head that lives on my living room wall.

Ideas for Decorating Your Walls | inspiredbycharm.com

Again, this type of thing falls in the three-dimensional object category, but this is a more specific example. Animal busts come in a variety of styles, animals, and finishes, so if you like this look, there’s something that should suit your home. Plus, no animals were harmed in the making of them. That’s a huge bonus.

Ideas for Decorating Your Walls | inspiredbycharm.com

(I think this would be an appropriate time to also mention I have a gold paper maché unicorn above my bed.)

That’s a wrap for Part 1!

While I do have more ideas to share (Part 2 and Part 3 coming soon), I think this is where I’ll leave things for today. I certainly hope these tips were helpful and that you picked up an idea or two to take your walls from boring to bold.

Even though decorating has always been a hobby of mine (and part of my business during the past several years), there are still certain things about it that cause me to struggle. (This is probably obvious since it can take me over a year to “complete” a room.) One of the things that’s sometimes challenging […]

Whenever you take something wonderfully delicious and make a mini version of it, it seems to become twice as delicious. It’s kind of ironic because usually smaller doesn’t mean better. But in the case of food, it sure does. Today, we’re talking about and making some Black and Blue Sliders.

Black and Blue Sliders | inspiredbycharm.com

As you probably know, if there’s any place I’d rather be than hanging out in chilly Central PA, it’s floating on a ship in the Caribbean with my friends over at Carnival Cruise Lines. About two years ago I went on my first cruise. I totally loved the experience and have been on four different ships since then. The seas are clearly calling! Lucky for me, I’m going to be bumping that number up to five in the very near future.

One thing that I enjoy about cruising with Carnival is the endless supply of tasty food and drinks. Being a self-proclaimed foodie, I love that while on board, I can find something delicious to eat any time my tummy desires. (Also, I equally love the gym and plethora of activities to work off said food.) One delicious spot on several of the ships is Guy’s Burger Joint. (And yes, by Guy I mean Guy Fieri.) With fresh-off-the-grill burgers and hand-cut fries, “This place is money!”

Guy's Burger Joint // Black and Blue Sliders | inspiredbycharm.com

Inspired by Guy’s Burger Joint and my love of burgers, blue cheese, and miniature foods, we’re going to be whipping up some Black and Blue Sliders.

Black and Blue Sliders | inspiredbycharm.com

While the recipe looks a tad intimidating with its long list of ingredients, it’s really fairly simple. And let me tell you, all of those ingredients come together in such a magical way to take your taste buds to “Flavortown.” (I’m attempting to cleverly incorporate Guy quotes throughout this post. You’re welcome.)

Also, thanks to my friend and graphic designer, I’m showing you how to make a black bean variety of a slider. It’s also for those of you who are vegetarian or just want something a touch healthier.

Black and Blue Sliders | inspiredbycharm.com

To pack these little sliders full of flavor, you will need a few things before you get started. First, is the blackening spice. This is a combination of spices that you’ll add to your patties before frying them. The spice has a little kick to it so it adds some bold flavor to these tiny bites.

Black and Blue Sliders | inspiredbycharm.com

Black and Blue Sliders | inspiredbycharm.com

Secondly, we are going to make garlic butter. With this made, we will spread it on some of those sweet Hawaiian-style rolls and toast them up before layering up the sliders. Seriously, there are little pockets of flavor everywhere.

Black and Blue Sliders | inspiredbycharm.com

Black and Blue Sliders | inspiredbycharm.com

Finally, we’re going to whip up Donkey Sauce. This is one of Guy’s signature sauces. (Normally I need a lot of ketchup on a burger, but because this stuff is so tasty, I don’t need a drop.)

Black and Blue Sliders | inspiredbycharm.com

Now, whether you’re making the traditional beef burger or the black bean variety, you’ll want to stuff them with blue cheese. I understand that some people don’t like blue cheese, so you’re welcome to substitute whatever cheese you like. If you do however, I wouldn’t recommend calling them Black and Blue Sliders.

Black and Blue Sliders | inspiredbycharm.com

After your burgers are cooked, you’re ready to assemble them. I’ve given you a delicious combination of toppings that works beautifully with all the other pieces to this slider puzzle. However, you’re welcome to use whatever combination of toppings you like.

Black and Blue Sliders | inspiredbycharm.com

Oh, and if you decide to add bacon to these sliders (which you totally should) you can check out my secret way to make the best bacon here.

Black and Blue Sliders | inspiredbycharm.com

And that’s it. Sliders are a go. Invite some friends over, close your eyes, take a bite, and pretend you’re sailing in the Caribbean. (You may need to turn up the heat in your house and blast some tropical tunes for the full effect.)

Black and Blue Sliders | inspiredbycharm.com

Black and Blue Sliders | inspiredbycharm.com

Now, for the recipe.

Black and Blue Sliders | inspiredbycharm.com

Black and Blue Sliders

Makes 12 sliders

Here's what you will need:

Blackening Spice:
1 tablespoon black pepper
2 teaspoons onion powder
2 teaspoons ground cumin
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
1 teaspoon paprika
1/2 teaspoon chili powder
1/2 teaspoon Kosher salt

Garlic Butter:
4 tablespoons unsalted butter
6 cloves garlic, minced
3 tablespoons fresh flat leaf parsley, minced

Donkey Sauce:
1 cup mayonnaise
1/4 cup roasted garlic, minced
1 teaspoon yellow mustard
1/4 teaspoon Kosher salt
4 dashes Worcestershire sauce
4 pinches black pepper

Sliders:
32 ounces ground beef (80/20 blend)*
12 ounces blue cheese crumbles
12 mini Hawaiian-style rolls, sliced in half

Toppings**:
6 slices applewood bacon, cooked
24 dill pickle slices
1/2 onion, finely sliced
2 or 3 small tomatoes, finely sliced
2 cups mixed greens
12 wood skewers

*Alternatively to make Black Bean patties you will need 2 cans (15 ounces) of black beans and 1 cup panko bread crumbs. In a bowl, mash the beans with a fork and combine with bread crumbs. Add about 4 tablespoons of water to bring the mixture together. Prepare the sliders exactly the same, substituting this black bean mixture for the ground beef.
**Optional. You can top these burgers however you'd like. However, these ingredients do make a delicious combination.

Begin by preparing the blackening spice. In a small bowl, whisk together the black pepper, onion powder, cumin, garlic powder, cayenne pepper, Italian seasoning, paprika, chili powder, and Kosher salt. Set aside.

Next, make the garlic butter. In a medium sauce pan over medium-heat, add the butter and garlic. Melt the butter and cook the garlic for about 5 to 6 minutes. Remove from the heat, add the parsley, and mix well. Transfer to a bowl and set aside.

Then, prepare the Donkey Sauce. In a small bowl combine the mayonnaise, roasted garlic, Worcestershire sauce, yellow mustard, salt, and pepper. Mix well until smooth. Cover and refrigerate until slider assembly.

To make the patties for the sliders, divide the ground beef (or black bean mixture) into 24 balls. Then using your hands, form the balls into 2-inch round patties. Evenly top half of the patties with half (6 ounces) of the blue cheese. Place another patty on top, seal the edges, and re-form into a patty. The final patty will be about 3 inches round. Repeat to make 12 patties. Then season both sides with the prepared blackening spice.

Grill or pan fry the patties until fully cooked. Just before removing from the heat, evenly divide the remaining 6 ounces of blue cheese to top each of the patties. Remove from the heat when the cheese begins to melt.

Next, brush the cut sides of the rolls with the garlic butter. Toast the rolls on the grill (or pan) until golden.

Finally, assemble the sliders. Smear a bit of the Donkey Sauce on both toasted sides of the roll. Add the patty, then layer with bacon, dill pickle, onion, tomatoes, and greens. Top with the bun and and secure with a wood skewer.

Serve immediately.

“Holy sliders, Batman!” Don’t they look delicious!? They are!

I promise this recipe isn’t as intense as it seems. Plus, you will have some extra blackening spices and Donkey Sauce for more sliders next week or to incorporate into some other recipe. It’s a win-win.

During last year’s Fall Cookie Week, I created some Cinnamon Waffle Cookies with Maple Glaze. I really enjoyed the recipe and unique take on the classic “cookie”, so I wanted to give them another go. With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, I thought a seasonal variation on my first recipe could be fun and tasty.

With a few simple changes, I turned the original into these gorgeous and festive Red Velvet Waffle Cookies with Cream Cheese Glaze. Oh, and there are sprinkles and Reddi-wip, too. Talk about a tasty treat!

Red Velvet Waffle Cookies | inspiredbycharm.com

As you know, this year I’m working with Reddi-wip on a few missions to help #SharetheJoy. One of the amazing things about joy is that it can have a domino effect. A single gesture of joy (i.e., baking delicious waffle cookies) can have a long-lasting effect when you share it with someone you love. The ripple continues when that person shares the joy (and the cookies) with the people in their life. It’s kind of awesome, right?

Red Velvet Waffle Cookies | inspiredbycharm.com

Inspired by this idea, I wanted to create these waffle cookies in an effort to pass along some warm fuzzies to people I know who will enjoy them and share the joy with others. But first, we need some sweet treats. Let’s talk Red Velvet Waffle Cookies.

mini waffles

Not only are these cookies so simple to make, but they look perfectly divine for the upcoming holiday. I mean, who wouldn’t want to be greeted by a plate of tiny waffles topped with Reddi-wip?

Red Velvet Waffle Cookies | inspiredbycharm.com

The batter comes together pretty quickly. And the “baking” of these cookies is actually done in a waffle iron to create that classic grid pattern.

Red Velvet Waffle Cookies | inspiredbycharm.com

Red Velvet Waffle Cookies | inspiredbycharm.com

As yummy as waffles are on their own, their true purpose is to deliver more deliciousness to your mouth. That’s why I’m topping these with cream cheese glaze. Red velvet and cream cheese go together like peanut butter and jelly so this was a natural choice.

Red Velvet Waffle Cookies | inspiredbycharm.com

Red and pink sprinkles give these even more Valentine’s Day magic. And, just before indulging, I topped each cookie off with a whoosh of Reddi-wip. Made with real cream, it’s the perfect finishing touch for a waffle of any size.

Now, because this glaze has cream cheese in it, it’s not going to set up like a traditional glaze. So these cookies are best enjoyed the same day.

Let’s whip up a batch.

Red Velvet Waffle Cookies | inspiredbycharm.com

Red Velvet Waffle Cookies

Makes about 3 dozen cookies

Here's what you will need:
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder
2 sticks butter, unsalted
1 cup sugar
1/4 teaspoon salt
3 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 1/2 teaspoons red food coloring
PAM cooking spray

Cream Cheese Glaze:
4 ounces cream cheese, softened
1 cup powdered sugar
1/2 cup milk
Pinch of salt
Red and pink sprinkles, optional
Reddi-wip for garnish

In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour and cocoa powder. Set aside.

In the bowl of a stand mixer, cream together the butter, sugar, and salt until smooth (about 4 or 5 minutes). Mix to combine.

Turn the mixer to medium and add the eggs one at a time until incorporated. Then mix in the vanilla and red food coloring. Finally, set the mixer on low speed and slowly add the flour. The batter will be sticky.

Next, turn on your waffle iron, lightly spray with PAM cooking spray, and set the temperature to medium-high (400 degrees F). Add about a tablespoon of dough to each section of the waffle iron. "Bake" for 2-4 minutes or until the cookies are golden brown. Let the cookies cool and crisp up on a wire rack.

For the glaze, beat together the cream cheese and powdered sugar and salt until smooth. Slowly begin to incorporate the milk until you achieve the desired consistency. You may not need all of the milk. Dip the tops of each cookie into the glaze and return them to the cooling rack. Decorate with sprinkles. Serve with a whoosh of Reddi-wip.

Pretty simple, right? And aren’t they beautiful?

Now, to keep this joy train chugging along. I plated up my freshly “baked” cookies and surprised my older brother with a treat. He was delighted!

After a long day of work, he enjoyed a few cookies himself and then shared the rest with his neighbors and friends. Unexpected happy treats are the best.

Back in December, I gave my two fireplaces a quick makeover with paint. During the holidays, I didn’t get a chance to talk about the update here on IBC, so I thought today I’d share with you what I did and why I did it.

As you may know, there are two fireplaces in my home. One is on the first floor in the living room; the other is on the second floor in one of the guest bedrooms. Given that there are gas lines in both of the fireplaces, I assume that both were functional at one point. However, when I purchased the house, both gas lines were capped off, and the chimney was boarded up to prevent drafts.

When I was first transitioning this space a few years ago, I looked into getting the fireplace in the living room functioning again. The quote I got was high, plus I wasn’t a fan of the system they wanted to use. (Now, that really has nothing to do with today’s post other than the fact that part of the refurbishing process would have included replacing the tile around the fireplace.)

The tile around both fireplaces was in rough shape. That was another reason I wanted to give the fireplaces some attention. Not only did the color of the tile not work for the space, but it was also cracked, stained, and just generally not looking great.

While I assume the mantels, which are original to the house and almost 100 years old, could be removed so that I could replace the tile myself, I wanted to first figure out a plan for the actual fireplace in order to avoid removing the mantels twice or screwing up the tile when installing a fireplace insert.

In the meantime, the ugly tile was starting to drive me bonkers.

You may have never noticed, but several years ago, I painted the tile around the living room fireplace. It used to be a drab tan …

Fireplace Fix-Up | inspiredbycharm.com

(Sorry, I had a hard time finding photos. It seems I used to crop out the “ugliness.” [For good reason.] Ha!)

painted fireplace

… Now it’s the same color as the walls.

If you were paying extra close attention during my holiday home tour (bonus points to you), you might have notice that I painted the interior brick of the fireplace. Plus, I removed a piece of scalloped metal at the top of the fireplace. (Another detail that drove me crazy.)

Fireplace Fix-Up | inspiredbycharm.com

While it’s a small change, it made a big difference in the space.

Fireplace Fix-Up | inspiredbycharm.com

This recent change was made because I wanted black accents in the room.- I’m attempting to tone down my color palette a bit, and adding some black worked well when I decorated for the holidays this past year.

Although I did appreciate the charm of the black soot surrounding the untouched brick, it just wasn’t quite working with the rest of the room. With these two small changes, things look a lot cleaner.

Fireplace Fix-Up | inspiredbycharm.com

Now, you’re probably wondering about the paint. The tile wasn’t particularly glossy, so I didn’t do too much in terms of preparation. I did start with a primer. I used this Rust-Oleum Zinsser White Primer. Once that was dry, I chose to paint the tile with my wall color which is Aloof Gray from Sherwin Williams. I used their enamel paint in satin for a stronger finish. For the interior brick, I used Sherwin Williams enamel paint in satin again. The color is Black Magic.

Fireplace Fix-Up | inspiredbycharm.com

In addition, I purchased an iron fireplace grate to get the birch logs inside the fireplace off the floor. It just makes more sense this way. And it makes cleaning a bit easier. Even though the fireplace isn’t functional, I did get crafty and drill a few 1 1/2-inch holes into the logs. This allows me to tuck in tea lights to create a glow and flicker.

Fireplace Fix-Up | inspiredbycharm.com

Also, please don’t mind my lack of decor. I still haven’t “redecorated” after removing my holiday decor. I’m kind of enjoy the lack of “stuff”.

For the upstairs fireplace, I more or less did the same thing.

Fireplace Fix-Up | inspiredbycharm.com

As you can see, the tile “before” was pretty bad.

Fireplace Fix-Up | inspiredbycharm.com

I never showed it close up, but in addition to a few of the tiles being cracked, the finish on the tile was starting to look crackled. I’m not sure if this was intentional, but I wasn’t feeling it as it seemed to make the tile look dirty.

In this case, I just coated the tile with three coats of the white Rust-Oleum primer. Again, other than cleaning the tile, I didn’t do any prep work.

Since I still don’t have a clear direction for this space (after three years – ugh!), I wanted to keep it neutral. There’s nothing more neutral, fresh, and clean than white.

Fireplace Fix-Up | inspiredbycharm.com

Fireplace Fix-Up | inspiredbycharm.com

The interior brick in this fireplace was not soot covered, so I left it natural. Then, once the painting was done, to fill up the actual fireplace, I tucked in a few cacti / succulents that I brought in from my porch for the winter.

Fireplace Fix-Up | inspiredbycharm.com

Now, I know that’s not the best solution, but right now it works well for me. Fresh and clean!

Fireplace Fix-Up | inspiredbycharm.com

Also, before I sign off, can we quickly talk about the new artwork I have in this space? It’s actually the reason I decided to finally just paint this tile.

Fireplace Fix-Up | inspiredbycharm.com

This piece comes from Lindsay Letters. You probably remember me talking about her during my holiday home tour. She’s the person who creates and sells the Elf prints.

Fireplace Fix-Up | inspiredbycharm.com

Anyway, she kindly sent me this piece, and I’m just in love with it. It’s called Pink Bomb. It was photographed by Lark Photography, exclusively for Lindsey Letters.

Fireplace Fix-Up | inspiredbycharm.com

The image is this gorgeous bomb of smoke that starts with this beautiful orange-y coral color and eventually becomes a beautiful soft pink. Framed with a simple gold frame, it’s ideal for this space.

I do want to actually get it hung on the wall and pair it with a few more things on the mantel. One step at a time.

Fireplace Fix-Up | inspiredbycharm.com

The piece arrived back in November when I was struggling personally, and when I put it on the mantel for the first time, I sat back and cried. I tend to be an emotional / heart-on-the-sleeve person, but that was odd even for me. There was just something about the piece that touched me and gave me a little hope, not only for the space, but for life in general. (Thank you again, Lindsay.)

Fireplace Fix-Up | inspiredbycharm.com

If you want more details on this piece or want to learn more about Lindsay’s canvas and print work, hop on over to her site here.

Anywho, that’s my little (yet somehow long-winded) Fireplace Fix-Up. Isn’t it amazing what a few quarts of paint can do?

How do you think they look?

Back in December, I gave my two fireplaces a quick makeover with paint. During the holidays, I didn’t get a chance to talk about the update here on IBC, so I thought today I’d share with you what I did and why I did it. As you may know, there are two fireplaces in my […]

This Spinach, Bacon, and Swiss Quiche is my favorite quiche recipe. I think you are going to love it too. It makes a delicious breakfast or lunch idea you’re going to want to make again and again.

Spinach, Bacon, and Swiss Quiche:

Today I’m wrapping up Breakfast Week on IBC.

Spinach, Bacon, and Swiss Quiche | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCbreakfastweek

Yes, it’s true, Breakfast Week is coming to an end. However, I’m going to keep this series somewhat open-ended. This means I’ll probably pop back in with another breakfast week here and there until I’ve exhausted the topic. Sound good?

Other than my secret bacon recipe, this week was mostly focused on the sweeter side of things. However, given how much I love sweets, that probably was to be expected.

I thought I’d conclude things today with an incredibly delicious quiche recipe.

Spinach, Bacon, and Swiss Quiche | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCbreakfastweek

How to Make Spinach, Bacon, and Swiss Quiche:

If you haven’t had quiche, I hope you’ll give it a try. In case you’re not sure what it is, it’s like an omelet baked in a pie crust. But that omelet is really decadent and full of cheese, meats, and vegetables. It’s good stuff. For the filling, you can use whatever you like – bacon, ham, lobster, turkey, just veggies, etc. The combinations are endless.

Spinach, Bacon, and Swiss Quiche | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCbreakfastweek

Back in my high school days, I worked at a country-style cafe. Quiche was always on the menu, so I’ve been eating and loving it for a long time. Naturally, it works well for breakfast and brunch, but it also makes a great lunch when served with a side salad.

After trying many combinations, I’ve come to love the combination of spinach, bacon, and Swiss cheese the best. I’m not sure why it is, but the flavors work wonderfully together. And there’s bacon involved.

Spinach, Bacon, and Swiss Quiche | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCbreakfastweek

Spinach, Bacon, and Swiss Quiche | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCbreakfastweekPlus, if you if cook up your bacon the way I recommended earlier, it’s even better.

For my quiche, I used a store-bought crust. (Don’t tell!) However, you can make your own if you wish. I also like to pre-bake the crust just for a few minutes. This keeps it from getting terribly soggy when you pour in the egg mixture.

Spinach, Bacon, and Swiss Quiche | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCbreakfastweek

As always, I recommend buying quality cheese and shredding it yourself. I think this makes a huge flavor difference in recipes. As much as I love the convenience of bagged shredded cheese, nothing beats the taste and texture when you grate it fresh. Trust me.

Spinach, Bacon, and Swiss Quiche | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCbreakfastweek

Other than that, the recipe is pretty easy and straight forward. Here we go!

This Raspberry Buttermilk Cake is one of my go-to recipes. It’s so easy to make. It’s the perfect treat for breakfast, dessert, or an afternoon snack!

With that said, let the morning deliciousness continue! It’s Breakfast Week on IBC!

Raspberry Buttermilk Cake | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCbreakfastweek

Raspberry Buttermilk Cake:

This week of wonderful breakfast treats is partially inspired by my days as an innkeeper. I always served family style, whether I had. one guest or fourteen; no one was walking away from my table hungry. Although the menu items changed daily, I always stuck to a few categories.

Of course, there was the main item. This might be quiche, pancakes, or french toast. Then I would have a side dish, such as bacon, sausage, or hash browns. I’d also serve a fruit. Some examples: a mixed fruit parfait, yogurt with berries and granola, or even something fun like fruit kabobs. Finally, I’d offer a sweet (my favorite). This would be a muffin, pastry, coffee cake, cinnamon roll, etc.

Raspberry Buttermilk Cake | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCbreakfastweek

As you may have guessed, the sweet portion of the meal was also my favorite to cook (and eat). In fact, I could probably do a whole Breakfast Week just on those items.

One of my go-to breakfast sweets was this Raspberry Buttermilk Cake. Back then, I actually had this recipe memorized.

Raspberry Buttermilk Cake | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCbreakfastweek

Raspberry Buttermilk Cake | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCbreakfastweek

How to Make Raspberry Buttermilk Cake:

I love this cake for several reasons. First, it’s simple to make. As an innkeeper, my days were usually long so I didn’t do too much breakfast prep the night before. Having easy recipes to bake at 6 a.m. was a must. Secondly, I love to be able to use fresh berries for breakfast. While this recipe calls for raspberries, you can use any sweet and juicy berry you like. Trust me, I’ve tried them all.

Raspberry Buttermilk Cake | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCbreakfastweek

Raspberry Buttermilk Cake | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCbreakfastweek

Finally, I also loved this recipe for its simplicity. As I explained above, I served many different items at breakfast and this Raspberry Buttermilk Cake always played nicely with everything. The cake is moist with a touch of sweetness. The berries that float on top (or sometimes sink into the cake [which is just as good]) work wonderfully with the sweet layer of crunchy sugar that’s sprinkled on top before baking.

Raspberry Buttermilk Cake | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCbreakfastweek

To me, that makes a perfect breakfast sweet.

Raspberry Buttermilk Cake | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCbreakfastweek

Anyway, it’s not super fancy. It’s just an all-around good recipe that works well with a cup of coffee or tea. This obviously makes it ideal for breakfast.

Let me walk you through the recipe.

Raspberry Buttermilk Cake Recipe:

Raspberry Buttermilk Cake

Here's what you will need:
1 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup (1/2 stick) unsalted butter, softened
2/3 cup sugar
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 large egg
1/2 cup buttermilk
1 cup fresh raspberries
1 1/2 tablespoons sugar

Begin by preheating your oven to 400 degrees F.

Cut a round piece of parchment paper to fit the bottom of a 9-inch round cake pan. Spray the pan with flour baking spray, place the cut parchment round in the pan, then spray again.

In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.

In another medium bowl, beat together the butter and 2/3 cup sugar with an electric mixer on medium-high. Beat until light and fluffy, about 3 minutes. Then beat in the vanilla. Next add the egg and beat until incorporated.

At low speed, combine the flour mixture with the butter mixture in 3 batches, alternating with the buttermilk. Begin and end with the flour and mix until just combined.

Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan and smooth the top with a spatula. Scatter the raspberries over top of the batter, then sprinkle with the remaining 1 1/2 tablespoons of sugar.

Bake 25-30 minutes or until the cake is golden and a toothpick inserted near the center comes out clean.

Cool the cake in the pan for 10 minutes. Then, invert the cake to remove it from the pan. After removing the parchment paper, place the cake right side up on a wire rack. Allow the cake to cool 10-15 more minutes. Serve warm.

You’re going to love this Cherry Almond Oatmeal. It’s a delicious flavor combination that will keep your tastebuds and tummy satisfied!

Welcome back to Breakfast Week on IBC!

Cherry Almond Oatmeal Brown Sugar Bacon | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCbreakfastweek

Cherry Almond Oatmeal

When I’m trying to be more conscious of my breakfast decisions, I will take the time to make eggs or a bowl of oatmeal. I know that breakfast is important. Plus, to prevent myself from reaching for an unhealthy snack at 10 AM, a breakfast that fills me up is actually a smart idea. I usually stick with oatmeal because clean-up is easy, and I can get a little touch of sweetness if I want.

I’m sharing a delicious idea that will make you actually want to take a few minutes to prepare something yummy to start your day.

Cherry Almond Oatmeal Brown Sugar Bacon | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCbreakfastweek

For this Cherry Almond Oatmeal, I looked to one of my favorite flavor combinations – cherry and almond. This past December, I told you how to make White Chocolate Cherry Almond Quick Bread. I’m not sure what it is about this combination, but my taste buds seem to enjoy it. That’s why I created this Cherry Almond Oatmeal.

Cherry Almond Oatmeal | inspiredbycharm.com

To make things even better, this oatmeal combination is super simple. Like many people, I need to go easy in the morning at least until the coffee kicks in.

How to Make Cherry Almond Oatmeal:

First, I cooked my oatmeal. I did this in the microwave because it’s quick. In addition to the water, I used the smallest splash of almond extract to get that yummy almond flavor cooked right into my oats.

Cherry Almond Oatmeal | inspiredbycharm.com

After that, I added a sprinkle of brown sugar. Since my breakfast of choice is leftover cake, I need a little sweetness in the morning.

Cherry Almond Oatmeal | inspiredbycharm.com

To finish things off, I topped my cooked oats with sliced almonds and fresh cherries.

Cherry Almond Oatmeal | inspiredbycharm.com

Not too bad, right? The only thing that takes a bit of time is slicing the cherries, but you could certainly do that the night before.

Cherry Almond Oatmeal | inspiredbycharm.com

Although you probably won’t need a recipe to make this, (It is pretty basic.), I created one for you to have as a tickler, so you won’t forget about making this. Let’s take a peek.

See, pretty simple! I may just have to pass on the sweets for breakfast and stick to my Cherry Almond Oatmeal instead.

Cherry Almond Oatmeal | inspiredbycharm.com

Cherry Almond Oatmeal | inspiredbycharm.com

Hopefully, I’ve inspired you to whip up your own oatmeal combo. Good luck and enjoy your oatmeal!

Cherry Almond Oatmeal Recipe:

Cherry Almond Oatmeal

makes 1 bowl

Here's what you will need:
1/2 cup Quaker Quick 1-Minute Oats
1 cup water (or milk)
Pinch of salt
Splash of pure almond extract
1-2 tablespoons brown sugar
1/4 cup fresh cherries, pitted and quartered
2 tablespoons sliced almonds

Begin by combining the oats, water (or milk), salt, and almond extract in a medium microwave-safe bowl. Microwave on high for 1 1/2 - 2 minutes. Stir.

Top with brown sugar, cherries, and almonds. (Use as much or as little of these ingredients as you like to create your best bowl.) Enjoy!

This Baked Bacon with Brown Sugar is hands down my favorite way prepare bacon! Not only does it add a touch of sweetness, but clean-up is a breeze! You’re going to love it.

Welcome to the first-ever Breakfast Week on IBC! We’re kicking things off with this Brown Sugar Baked Bacon!

Brown Sugar Bacon | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCbreakfastweek

Thanks to a few of your comments (and an idea I had a while back), I’m dedicating a week to breakfast. As some of you may know, at one time I owned a bed and breakfast. With six years of daily breakfast cooking and serving under my belt, I have lots of delicious recipes and ideas to share.

Although I’m calling this Breakfast Week, I’m not exactly sure how long it will last or how many recipes I’ll end up posting. I guess it will be a surprise to us all.

To start things off, this week I’ll be telling you about a few favorite dishes from my B&B days plus some new ideas I’ve been wanting to try. Let’s get into it!

I thought it’d only be appropriate to begin this series with a recipe that always got rave reviews at my B&B:  Baked Bacon with Brown Sugar.

Brown Sugar Baked Bacon:

Brown Sugar Bacon | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCbreakfastweek

All of you who love bacon are sure to understand the allure. However, if you’ve never had bacon prepared this way, you must give it a try. If you think you liked bacon before, you’re going to fall head over heels for this stuff.

In recent years, recipes like this have been floating around the Internet, so I wouldn’t be surprised if you’ve heard of this or something similar. However, since it’s so delicious, I figured tossing my little recipe out there wouldn’t hurt.

How do you Make Baked Bacon?

Now, this recipe is super simple, but there are a few important things to ensure delicious results every time.

First, you must use a quality thick-cut bacon. I’m currently a big fan of the Wright Brand Applewood Smoked Bacon. It’s a bit more expensive, but totally worth it. That’s what I’m using today. However, use whatever brand you prefer: just make sure it’s cut thick.

Brown Sugar Bacon | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCbreakfastweek

Is it better to Bake or Fry Bacon?

Second, in this recipe we are going to bake the bacon instead of frying it. I love this preparation method for many reasons.

Not only does it make clean-up a breeze, but the bacon cooks more evenly. It’s not cooking in its own grease, and that lingering bacon scent isn’t as strong,

Brown Sugar Bacon | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCbreakfastweek

To get started, I line a baking pan with aluminum foil. Then, I set a cooling rack in the foil-lined pan. The aluminum foil isn’t necessary, but when the pan is cooled, you can just toss the foil in the trash along with the bacon grease.

That’s the easy clean-up part. Not to mention, you won’t have bacon grease splattering all over your stove top while cooking.

Brown Sugar Bacon | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCbreakfastweek

Brown Sugar Bacon | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCbreakfastweek

After that, simply lay out your bacon on the cooling rack, sprinkle the bacon with brown sugar, and pop the pan in the oven. That’s it.

Brown Sugar Bacon | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCbreakfastweek

The amount of brown sugar is totally up to you. I just give the bacon a little dusting. If you like things sweeter, add more sugar. If you just want a hint of sweetness, use less.

Bake the bacon at 350 degrees F for 20-30 minutes, depending how crispy you like it. Just pay attention to it, particularly as the bacon nears cooked perfection. It can go from perfectly done to burned very quickly.

Brown Sugar Bacon | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCbreakfastweek

That’s it!

I kid you not, this stuff is dangerously good. You will both thank me and hate me for sharing this deliciousness with you.

Brown Sugar Bacon | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCbreakfastweek

Oh, and one more thing, if you like things spicy, shake a little cayenne pepper in your brown sugar. So good!

Brown Sugar Bacon | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCbreakfastweek

Here are a few dishes you can serve with your bacon:

Brown Sugar Bacon | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCbreakfastweek

Like I said, my friends, give this decadent take on baked bacon a try; then come back and let me know what you think.

I have every intention of showing you around the upstairs of my house. I’ve made some progress in my guest room and my bathroom, so I’m excited to share that with you. However, right now my second floor looks like a gift-wrapping bomb went off. We will get there one of these days, even if it’s after Christmas. I promise. In the meantime, would you settle for a look at my upstairs hallway?

Updating my Picture Ledges | inspiredbycharm.com

A couple years ago I created these super inexpensive DIY picture ledges for a wall in the hallway. (Tutorial can be found here.) While they looked great when I hung them, as months passed and things got moved around, they started looking a little lame. They sort of became a catch-all for random frames and pictures I had around the house.

Frustrated with this area, I finally decided to take action. My plan was to create a gallery wall using the ledges to hold frames. I wanted to stick with mostly framed prints / photographs and maybe toss in a couple small objects.

With this in mind, I knew I needed some new things to fill my frames, so I headed over to Minted to check out their huge artwork section. And by huge, I mean ginormous. I was actually a bit overwhelmed at first. As you know, I love so many things, so choosing was harder than I anticipated. To make the task manageable, I had to limit myself.

Updating my Picture Ledges | inspiredbycharm.com

Since I love being near the ocean, I decided to create a mini beach-inspired getaway in my hallway. That meant I’d stick with art that reminded me of the water. I’d also limit my color palette: white, greens, blues, and obviously a touch of gold.

What felt overwhelming quickly became easy and fun! I just used the tools on the Minted site to narrow my search (You can do so by color and theme.) and voila! I had a collection of prints I was both excited about and inspired by.

And just like that, my picture ledges were back to looking company-ready! And, because these prints were purchased specifically for this space, I won’t be moving them around to other areas of the house anytime soon.

Since the holidays are here, I added stockings, pine, and Christmas ornaments to give things a festive touch.

Now, every time I walk into this hallway, I feel relaxed instead of stressed. It also makes me want to plan my next vacation pronto! And that my friends is exactly what art should do.

Mini Fall Cheeseball Appetizer Recipe

These Mini Cheeseballs / aka Cheese Truffles are an easy, cute, and delicious appetizer recipe everyone will love!

Cheese Truffles // Holiday Bacon-Inspired Appetizers | inspiredbycharm.com

Cute, right? Basically, these are single-serving cheese balls.

I love a cheese ball. But the downside is that while it’s beautiful at the start, after a couple people dig into it, it often looks messy and less appealing.

With this mini cheeseball recipe, however, each guest can gets his / her own mini-cheeseball. The truffle has the same wonderful taste as a regular cheeseball, and the presentation looks great all evening. Genius!

Sidenote: If you’re looking for my Cranberry Bacon-Wrapped Water Chestnuts recipe, You can find that HERE.

Cheese Truffles // Holiday Bacon-Inspired Appetizers | inspiredbycharm.com

Each truffle contains enough cheese for three crackers. (Or if you’re a cheese lover like me, it’s one truffle per cracker. Ha!)

Since variety is the spice of life, I have two cheese truffle recipes for you: Blue Cheese, Bacon, and Pistachio Cheese Truffles and Cheddar, Bacon, and Ranch Cheese Truffles. Here, I’m using  Applewood Smoked Bacon which pairs so nicely with cheese. The bacon is used both in the cheese mixture as well as a garnish to coat each truffle.

How to Make Mini Cheeseballs:

Cheese Truffles // Holiday Bacon-Inspired Appetizers | inspiredbycharm.com

While the ingredients differ in each recipe, the directions are the same.

Begin by mixing all of the ingredients, except for the garnish. You can do this by hand, but I find using a hand mixer works best to get everything well combined.

Cheese Truffles // Holiday Bacon-Inspired Appetizers | inspiredbycharm.com

Once you have your truffle mixture, you’ll want to roll it into 1 1/2-inch balls. Then, roll each ball in chopped nuts or bacon. Pop the truffles in the refrigerator to chill for at least an hour before serving, and you’re ready to go.

Cheese Truffles // Holiday Bacon-Inspired Appetizers | inspiredbycharm.com

While these require a little more preparation than your standard cheese ball, the presentation is well worth the effort.

Cranberry Meatball Recipe

These Cranberry Meatballs are a flavorful and easy appetizer recipe that makes the perfect treat for holiday entertaining!

Looking for a great holiday appetizer idea? This recipe for Cranberry Meatballs is it!

Cranberry Meatballs| inspiredbycharm.com

As you’ve probably guessed, I love holiday cooking and baking. My reasons are many. First, there’s the sugar, butter, cream, bacon, and a host of other decadent ingredients. These are the things that make food taste so good, and during the holidays they are celebrated.

Secondly, since these ingredients are so welcome and encouraged, holiday food is rich and flavorful. You get full not from eating a huge amount, but from the intensity of flavors in the dishes. Right? You know what I’m talking about.

Third, garnishes go on everything during the holidays. Cookies get sprinkles, cocktails get cranberries, hot chocolate gets candy canes,…. The list could go on and on.

Finally, a meal can consist solely of appetizers. Yes!! That’s one of my favorite kinds of meals, and it happens a lot this time of year. Oh, I just love it all.

Anyway, there’s a point to all of this explanation. I whipped up a batch of Cranberry Meatballs, and they are beyond good.

How to Make Cranberry Meatballs:

These Cranberry Meatballs are so easy to make! Just mix, roll, and bake! Doesn’t get easier than that, right?

The addition of cranberry sauce in the glaze gives a wonderful fruity tartness that works so well with the meatballs. Plus, it’s the season of cranberries! These were meant for the holidays.

Celebrate the season with this delicious Peppermint Espresso Martini. Cheers, friends! It’s Day 12 of the 12 Days of Christmas.

Peppermint Espresso Martini | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

This is a bittersweet day for me. While I have a delicious cocktail recipe, today marks the end of this fun and festive 12-day adventure. (For those of you who can’t get enough of IBC, please don’t worry. I’ll be posting holiday inspiration straight through to the big day! (At that point, I will probably sneak in a little break.)

As a delicious and festive send off for 12 Days 2015, I thought a coffee-inspired holiday cocktail would be appropriate. That’s why today’s recipe is for a Peppermint Espresso Martini.

Peppermint Espresso Martini | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

Peppermint Espresso Martini | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

I’m a big fan of espresso martinis, so adding a seasonal twist to this cocktail just made sense. Plus, I figured that around the holidays you might need a festive little pick-me-up.

How to Make an Espresso Martini with Peppermint:

This cocktail is so simple to make. To start, brew a shot of espresso.

Peppermint Espresso Martini | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

Then, fill a cocktail shaker with ice and add Kahlúa Peppermint Mocha, vodka, a splash of cream, and the espresso you just brewed.

Peppermint Espresso Martini | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

Shake it all up and pour it into a beautiful martini glass rimmed with crushed candy cane. That’s it!

Peppermint Espresso Martini | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

Typically espresso martinis do not have cream. However, I like cream in my coffee, so a splash in my martini made it perfect. Plus, I also love the creamy mocha color it creates.

Peppermint Espresso Martini | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

I should also let you know that when rimming the martini glass, I found that honey works best to get the candy cane pieces to stick. You can even toss some coffee beans into the martini if you’d like.

Let’s shake one up!

Peppermint Espresso Martini | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

Espresso Martini with Peppermint:

Peppermint Espresso Martini

Makes 1 drink

Here's what you will need:
1.5 parts Kahlúa Peppermint Mocha
1 part vodka
1 freshly brewed espresso
Splash of cream, optional
Ice
Crushed peppermint candy cane (or peppermint hard candy) and honey to garnish

Begin by rimming your martini glass in honey. Let any excess drip off. Then, dip into the crushed peppermint pieces. Set aside.

In a cocktail shaker with ice, add the Kahlúa, vodka, espresso, and cream. Shake vigorously until combined and cold.

Pour the cocktail into the prepared martini glass and enjoy!

Beautifully decadent, right?

Peppermint Espresso Martini | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

(BTW, I really like photographing martinis. I’m not sure why, but they always look so pretty. What do you think?)

Peppermint Espresso Martini | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

If you like espresso and martinis, be sure to give this a try. If you don’t like peppermint with your coffee, use regular Kahlúa and skip the peppermint rim to make a classic Espresso Martini.

A huge thanks to all of you who’ve followed along these past twelve days. I’m going to teach you how to make a super delicious White Chocolate, Almond, and Cherry Bread. It’s a delicious holiday treat that’s perfect for snacking or gifting!

Do you hear them? Eleven pipers piping! It’s Day 11 of the 12 Days of Christmas here on IBC.

White Chocolate, Almond, and Cherry Bread:

White Chocolate Cherry Almond Quick Bread | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

My thought process here is that you can whip of a couple batches of this quick bread for friends or colleagues. (You know, all of those folks you want to remember at Christmas, but can’t afford to give expensive presents.) Then, just tuck in a beautiful card with your bread, and you’ve got yourself a tasty, thoughtful treat. Who wouldn’t love that?

Cherry Christmas Card | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

First, let’s make some yummy quick bread.

I’ve been eyeing this recipe from Averie Cooks for some time. Given that I love the combination of cherry and almond around the holidays, I thought her recipe (with a few tweaks and the addition of white chocolate), would make the perfect treat. It’s something different, and it totally beats fruitcake. (Be sure to check out Averie Cooks, btw. She has a collection of amazing and beautiful recipes!)

How to Make White Chocolate, Almond, and Cherry Bread:

Cherry Christmas Card | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

Since I plan to give this bread away, I picked up these little cardboard pans at HomeGoods. I thought they’d be a beautiful way to present my homemade gift.

White Chocolate Cherry Almond Quick Bread | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

Once that was taken care of, I got to baking.

White Chocolate Cherry Almond Quick Bread | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

When the bread was cooled, I topped it with the cherry almond glaze and added sprinkles for the season.

White Chocolate Cherry Almond Quick Bread | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

Depending on how and when you’re going to give this bread, you might want to wrap it in some plastic wrap before adding a bow. To photograph it for this post, I just tied a bow around the whole thing, sans plastic wrap. Simple, but still cute and festive.

Let me walk you through the recipe; then we will move on to holiday cards.

I'm going to teach you how to make a super delicious White Chocolate, Almond, and Cherry Bread. It's a delicious holiday treat that's perfect for snacking or gifting!

Ingredients

Glaze:

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F.
  • For this recipe I used three 3x6-inch oven-safe cardboard pans. You can use whatever pan(you'd like, but make sure to adjust the baking time accordingly. These cardboard pans don't require the use of oil to prevent sticking. However, if you are using a metal or glass pan, spray it with cooking spray before pouring in the batter.
  • Begin by separating the cherries from the juice. Save the juice. Then, roughly chop the cherries.
  • Sprinkle the cherries with the two tablespoons of flour and toss to coat. (This prevents them from sinking while baking.) Set aside.
  • In a large mixing bowl, whisk together 1 3/4 cups flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
  • In a small mixing bowl, whisk together the egg, oil, almond extract, vanilla extract, and all of the cherry juice minus 1/4 cup. (Reserve this 1/4 cup of cherry juice for the glaze.)
  • Pour the wet mixture into the dry mixture and stir until just combined. Gently fold in the chopped cherries and white chocolate chips.
  • Pour the batter into your prepared pans filling each about two-thirds full.
  • Bake for 30-35 minutes. You'll know your bread is done when a toothpick inserted near the center comes out clean. Allow the bread to cool completely.
  • For the glaze, whisk the 1/4 cup reserved cherry juice with the almond extract and confectioners' sugar. If the glaze seems too thin, add more sugar until the desired consistency is reached. (If it's too thick, you can add a little water to thin it.)
  • Once the bread is cool, drizzle on the glaze and top with sprinkles.

Now that you have your gift ready, let’s talk Christmas cards. As I noted above, my cards are from Minted. I chose this beautiful botanical design with a foil-press. Yes, I know. Even my Christmas cards must have a little bling.

Cherry Christmas Card | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

One of the things I love to get from Minted is their photo cards. After you’ve chosen your photo (It might be a picture of your family or latest vacation or maybe your significant other.), you add it to one of their designs and magic happens. Since it’s just yours truly and the cats around here, I opted for a non-photo card. (I can hear the chorus of thank yous from my friends and family. – You’re welcome.)

Cherry Christmas Card | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

You still should have time (if you get your order in quickly) to receive your holiday cards before Christmas. However, Minted also has a fantastic selection of New Years cards. So, if things are a little crazy for you right now, you can certainly wish your family and friends a Happy New Year with a beautiful, personalized card.

Cherry Christmas Card | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

As you might have guessed, I like to jazz my cards up a bit. So, I bling up the envelopes a bit with my new best friend, glitter tape. It’s like a sneak peak of what’s inside.

Cherry Christmas Card | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

My other little holiday card trick (which I’ve been sharing for the past few years) is to use vintage holiday postage stamps when I mail out my cards. A grouping of three or four old stamps is usually enough to equal today’s postage rate. It’s a nostalgic nod on a modern card. Plus, it’s completely unexpected and fun. You can find these vintage stamps on Etsy. You’ll pay a little more per stamp, but I think it’s worth it.

Cherry Christmas Card | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

Now, I just need to find a spare minute or two or three to write out my cards. Maybe I can get Sebastian to help?

Maybe not.

Cherry Christmas Card | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

Anywho, I hope you enjoyed all of these ideas and tips for spreading cute, delicious, and personalized cheer this Christmas.

Let’s decorate you table with these holiday and Christmas centerpieces! Welcome to Day 10 of the 12 Days of Christmas!

After sharing my Holiday Home Tour with you last week, I thought it’d be fun to take a closer look at the centerpieces on my tables and then share a couple more ideas for simple, “use-what-you-have” holiday and Christmascenterpieces.

Holiday Centerpiece Ideas | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

The reality is that sometimes decorating is tough. It took me weeks to decorate my home for the holidays, and there are still some things I’m kind of “ehhh” about. We are our toughest critics, aren’t we?

Christmas Centerpieces

So, today I thought I’d lend a helping hand by offering several ideas for decorating a dining room table. Now, I know you probably don’t have a prop closet at your house, but hopefully you’ll have most of things things on hand to pull something together. The goal behind all of these holiday centerpieces is three-fold: Keep it low budget. Use the things you already have. And make it as festive as Santa’s Workshop.

First, I’m going to give you a closer look at my existing holiday centerpieces (the ones I shared in my Holiday Home Tour), then I’m going to offer additional ideas. Here we go!

Green Tree Christmas Centerpiece:

For the centerpiece in my dining room, I followed a few of my basic rules.

Holiday Centerpiece Ideas | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

I started by creating most of the centerpiece on a tray. As I’ve said in the past, I like doing this because the whole thing can be quickly moved when the table is needed for dining.

Holiday Centerpiece Ideas | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

I didn’t want to spend a bunch of money on a new centerpiece so I used a lot of what I already had. Sticking to my color palette of green and gold, I filled the tray with a mix of decorative trees – mostly bottle brush trees (Be sure to check out HomeGoods for these. They always have a great selection.), but also some of the colorful wooden trees I created a few years ago.

Holiday Centerpiece Ideas | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

Holiday Centerpiece Ideas | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

While this already felt festive, I tossed in a few small glass ornaments to fill in the base of the tray.

Holiday Centerpiece Ideas | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

And, since I loved them so much, I did pick up a pair of these brass moose to flank each side of the tray. What I really like about these moose is that they are timeless. Brass animal figures have been around forever and continue to work in modern decor. (Well, in my world, anyway.)

Holiday Centerpiece Ideas | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

With that, my centerpiece was complete. I opted to also use a table runner because I think it grounds everything and adds softness to the table.

Now, if you don’t have a collection of green trees, don’t worry. Any sort of collection would work here. As long as there is a constant color palette and some varying heights and textures, you’re good. Maybe you have a collection of nutcrackers or brass candlesticks? Those would work great.

Modern and Colorful Christmas Centerpiece:

Moving on. In my office area, I went a bit more colorful.

Holiday Centerpiece Ideas | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

I had this marble tiered server that was sitting in my closet so I decided to put it to use. As you know, I love glass ornaments (thanks in part to the selection at HomeGoods), so I filled the server with the detailed / ornate ones. Again, you don’t need this particular server or intricate glass ornaments. Something like a cake stand would work perfectly to get this look.

Holiday Centerpiece Ideas | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

To continue the theme around the table, I added a couple plates topped with wreaths and an ornament.

Holiday Centerpiece Ideas | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

Holiday Centerpiece Ideas | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

Because my color palette is a bit more varied in this space, I was able to have more fun with color. This look is happy, energetic, and festive.

Holiday Centerpiece Ideas | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

Plus, that tiered stand with ornaments set against the lit Christmas tree is just gorgeous!

Holiday Centerpiece Ideas | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

Okay, now that we’ve covered the existing centerpieces, I want to share two more variations. This time, however, I want to put these centerpieces to work. Let me show you what I mean.

Candy Inspired Christmas Centerpiece:

In my dining room, I decided to create a little candy station.

Holiday Centerpiece Ideas | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

If you know you’re not going to be hosting a big meal at your table, this is a fun way to dress up the table with something that functions as a treat for your visitors.

Again, sticking with my holiday dining room color scheme of gold and green, I started off with three cake stands. Then, I just filled them with some matching decor and candy. I love hitting up the grocery section at HomeGoods for unique candies and treats. The have great cakes stands too!

Holiday Centerpiece Ideas | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

Now, if this was an actual centerpiece, I might have purchased a couple more varieties of candy. However, things can still be beautiful and full just using what you have.

Holiday Centerpiece Ideas | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

Different heights and textures add a lot of interest, so be sure to mix things up. I also recommend adding a bit of bling to any centerpiece, especially during the holidays. Here, glittered crowns, a brass bowl, and ornaments provide plenty of sparkle.

Holiday Centerpiece Ideas | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

Holiday Centerpiece Ideas | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

Finally, I used a green felted ball garland to bring everything together. This made all of the individual pieces seem more unified. Plus it added some interesting texture and movement.

Holiday Centerpiece Ideas | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

As you can see, this centerpiece serves its purpose as decorative and functional.

Holiday Centerpiece Ideas | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

Now, on to the final centerpiece idea. This is the work horse of the group. This is mostly functional, but still decorative.

Entertaining Ready Christmas Centerpiece:

Let me paint a picture. Have you ever had unexpected guests show up around the holidays and you’re scrambling to find glassware, plates, flatware, salt and pepper, etc? Yeah, we’ve all been there.

This holiday centerpiece is for you!

Holiday Centerpiece Ideas | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

Because this consists of glassware and plates and might collect dust over time, this might be one of those ideas you reserve for those days when you have an inkling people will be stopping by.

Holiday Centerpiece Ideas | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

Here, a few knickknacks help things look festive, while the bulk of the items will keep you prepared.

Holiday Centerpiece Ideas | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

I started this off with ceramic white trees for purely decorative purposes. Since I knew this centerpiece would be busy, I kept the decorations simple. Then I tucked in a tray. As I mentioned previously, trays are great because they allow you to easily move a bunch of items at once.

Holiday Centerpiece Ideas | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

Sidebar. Can I tell you how much I adore this tray? I just found it up at a local thrift shop for a steal. While it’s not “holiday” per se, the color works perfectly in my room and it brings a unique touch to my space.

Holiday Centerpiece Ideas | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

Anyway, once I had the trees and tray, I filled the rest of the centerpiece with practical items like plates, flatware, salt and pepper shakers, and glassware. These are things I know I’ll need when guests arrive.

Holiday Centerpiece Ideas | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

With those items in place, I tucked in a few more decorative items such as the bottle brush trees and these adorable, edible peppermint stir spoons. Festive and useful!

Again, I used a table runner for a pop of color and softness. Plus, it also acts as a border for where I should keep my decor and entertaining supplies. This keeps things looking clean and organized.

Holiday Centerpiece Ideas | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

And that’s it! Four unique, creative, inexpensive, and festive Christmas centerpieces  to keep your holiday tables looking on fleek!

What do you think? Did you pick up any little tips? What idea did you like best?

I really hope you’re enjoying the 12 Days of Christmas on IBC. If you missed anything, be sure to click through the slides below to see all the ideas that I’ve been sharing throughout this series. Happy Holidays!

Welcome back to the 12 Days of Christmas! It’s Day 9. Today we are getting our quick-craft on with this fabulous cookie cutter wreath!

DIY Cookie Cutter Wreath | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

During this past year I teamed up with a group of fabulous bloggers to share helpful 10 minute ideas. These ideas ranged from easy desserts to simple decorating tips. (Check out the collection of ideas I shared here.) We are back this month with our final idea of the year (and possibly the series)! It’s bittersweet. Since Christmas is right around the corner, my blogger friends and I are presenting 10 Minute Decorating Ideas to help you dress your home for the season. Be sure to check out the other projects linked up at the end of this post.

For my 10 Minute Decorating Idea, I’m going to teach you how to make this adorable Cookie Cutter Wreath.

DIY Cookie Cutter Wreath | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

I wish I could take credit for this genius creation, but I saw it in a magazine a few years ago and had to make one for myself. As much as I enjoy a more complicated DIY (my wood stockings, for example), I also love projects that can be put together quickly.

I think they (Yep, I made two.) turned out wonderfully.

DIY Cookie Cutter Wreath | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

I created these wreaths for the sliding barn doors in my entryway. Around the holidays, I love to dress up the doors. Normally, I’m okay with a little less color, but a blank slate is begging for a bit of holiday cheer.

DIY Cookie Cutter Wreath | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

I’m also a fan of projects that allow you to put your own spin on them. With this project, feel free to change up the cookie cutter shape, use twine or wire instead of ribbon, or make it larger or smaller. There are oodles of options.

Star Cookie Cutter Wreath

I found that the packs of cookie cutters with different sizes of the same shape come in handy for this DIY. I was thrilled when I came across the pack of star cookie cutters I’m using here. To create a wreath like mine, you’ll need two packs. You’ll use every cutter with the exception of the smallest one.

Okay, with all of that background out of the way, let me walk you through how to put this wreath together.

DIY Cookie Cutter Wreath | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

How to Make a Cookie Cutter Wreath:

Here’s what you will need:
Star cookie cutters in various sizes (I found mine here.)
Hot glue gun and glue sticks
Ribbon or twine
Scissors
Pine bough (faux or real)

DIY Cookie Cutter Wreath | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

Start by laying out the cookie cutters in a circle. Make sure that each cookie cutter touches the adjacent one in at least one spot.

DIY Cookie Cutter Wreath | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

Then, grab your hot glue gun. Using a small amount of glue, attach each cookie cutter to the next one. This will provide some stability for your wreath.

DIY Cookie Cutter Wreath | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

Next, tie on a piece of ribbon to the area where each ornament connects.

DIY Cookie Cutter Wreath | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

Using a pair of scissors, snip the ribbon to the desired length. I prefer it pretty short.

DIY Cookie Cutter Wreath | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

Continue to attach ribbon to all of the joints around the entire wreath.

DIY Cookie Cutter Wreath | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

Then, attach a long piece of ribbon to the top of your wreath to create a hanger. Tuck in a few small pieces of pine, and your wreath is complete.

DIY Cookie Cutter Wreath | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

Voila!

DIY Cookie Cutter Wreath:

DIY Cookie Cutter Wreath | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

Super cute, right?

DIY Cookie Cutter Wreath | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

There is just something about this wreath that I’m in love with. It’s simple, homemade, and super festive. There’s a comfort in that. And that’s part of what Christmas is all about.

At least I think so.

DIY Cookie Cutter Wreath | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

As always, if you create this project, or any project here on Inspired by Charm, I would really love to see it! Please, share it on Instagram using the hashtag #myIBC. (And for the 12 Days of Christmas you can also use #IBCholiday.) Seeing your inspired creations and recipes gets bloggers like me pretty excited.

For as long as I can remember, Christmas Eve has been celebrated at my mom’s house. Except for the three years I lived in Philadelphia, I’ve always spent the evening with my family, and it’s something I’ve come to look forward to year after year.

On Christmas Eve my mom typically serves a ridiculous number of appetizers. Everyone comes over after church, we snack and chat, open a few presents, and snack some more. She usually asks what treats she should make for the evening, and almost without fail, I request these Artichoke Wonton Wrappers.

Artichoke Wonton Wrappers | inspiredbycharm.com

I’m not sure what it is about them, but they are close to the top of my list of favorite bite-sized treats. Until creating this post, I’d actually never made them.

It turns out, the recipe is pretty simple. Pre-made wonton wrappers are tucked into a mini muffin pan, filled with a delicious mixture of artichoke hearts, veggies, and Parmesan cheese, and then baked in the oven. That’s it!

The resulting appetizers are warm, packed with flavor and even a bit of crunch thanks to the baked wontons. What more could you want? If you give these a try, I’m sure you’ll see why I like them so much.

Let me walk you through the recipe.

Artichoke Wonton Wrappers

Makes 24

Here's what you will need:
24 small wonton wrappers
1 jar (12 ounce) quartered and marinated artichoke hearts, drained and chopped
1/4 cup shredded Parmesan cheese
1 garlic clove, minced
1/4 cup sliced pitted black olives, chopped
1/4 cup red bell pepper, chopped
1/2 cup mayonnaise
24 small wonton wrappers

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

In a medium-sized bowl, stir together the artichoke hearts, Parmesan cheese, garlic, black olives, red bell pepper, and mayonnaise until well combined. Set aside.

Spray the cups in a mini muffin pan with oil. Then, gently press one wonton wrapper into each cup. Evenly fill the wonton wrappers with the artichoke mixture.

Bake for 12-14 minutes or until the wonton wrappers are just browned and the artichoke mixture is bubbly. Serve warm.

Pretty simple, right? Not only do these pack a flavor punch, but the use of the wonton wrappers make them seem extra fancy. Your guests will think you spent a lot more time in the kitchen than you did. Sneaky. Sneaky.

In this post I’m sharing my ideas for creative Holiday gift wrapping and beautiful Christmas wrapping paper ideas.

It’s a new week, and I’m back with the first of six more ideas during this second half of the 12 Days of Christmas here on IBC. I’m having so much fun creating and sharing this content with you. I hope you’re enjoying it as much as I am!

12 Creative Wrapping Ideas | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

For Day 7, I thought it might be helpful) to focus on unique, beautiful, and contemporary ways to wrap presents along with some creative Christmas wrapping paper ideas.  I absolutely love wrapping gifts. It’s been that way for as long as I can remember. Even in high school, I was buying fancy ribbons and little accessories to tie onto my packages to make them look extra special.

12 Creative Wrapping Ideas | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

Christmas is my favorite time to wrap, and there are endless options for creating festive packages. As I was coming up with ideas and photographing images for today’s post, I eventually had to stop myself because I could have kept on going.

For this post, I’ve narrowed down my ideas to twelve. (Plus a few little tips squeezed in here and there.) If for some reason you need / want more, let me know in the comments, and I’ll try to put together another list after the 12 Days series has ended. Sound good?

Christmas Wrapping Paper Ideas:

Okay, let’s start wrapping!

1. Thick Yarn

12 Creative Wrapping Ideas | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

This year, you can’t go into a craft store without seeing beautiful thick yarn. It comes in many colors so you’re certain to find something to match your paper.

12 Creative Wrapping Ideas | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

Here, I wrapped it around my package in a traditional way and tied it off with a bow at the top. Super simple, but the texture is terrific. To make the package just a bit more special, I topped it off with this wood tree from the craft store. I love this kind of inexpensive, festive detail. I recommend checking out the promotion bins at your craft store for small items you can use to dress up a package.

2. Wrapped

12 Creative Wrapping Ideas | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

Whether you use yarn (like I did here), twine, raffia, or ribbon, a cute way to tie up a present is to literally wrap your string around it over and over again. You can be more organized with your wrapping, but I kept things casual by creating lines that criss cross. Finish things off by the tying the ends in a bow; then add an ornament or gift tag.

Side note: One of my favorite places to pick up inexpensive wrapping paper, ribbon, and accessories is HomeGoods. They have unique and quality wrapping supplies at really great prices.

3. Add a Tree

Again, at the craft store I found this bag of inexpensive mini trees. After adding a ribbon, I used some dots of glue to attach three of the trees to the top of the package. Done! Pretty cute, right?

Lately, I’ve also been loving satin ribbon. I purchase all of mine from Nashville Wraps. They have oodles of colors and widths. While I prefer the premium ribbon, the value one works just as nicely. The rolls are large so I usually have plenty left over to use throughout the year.

4. An Oversized Letter

As you might have noticed, letters, initials, and the alphabet in general have become pretty popular in home decor. They are everywhere for good reason. They personalize your space. Having your name or initial on something makes it yours and yours alone. This idea can be easily translated into your gift wrap. Here, I simply tied this large oversized cardboard letter onto my package.

Crafty Christmas Wrapping Giveaway - 12 Creative Wrapping Ideas | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

I picked the letter up at the craft store one day when they were having a 70% off sale, so it was 50 cents or something crazy like that. Fun ideas do not need to be expensive.

More Creative Christmas Wrapping Paper Ideas:

5. Alphabet Stickers

12 Creative Wrapping Ideas | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday
Sticking with the letter theme, pick up a pack of alphabet stickers. In the scrapbook section, there are dozen of beautiful choices. These 3-D foil letters from Thickers were among those that grabbed by attention.

Here, I used them to add the word “merry” to my package. You could spell out the recipient’s name or keep the letters more random and scatter them all over the package. I love how they add dimension and a bit of bling.

12 Creative Wrapping Ideas | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

You may have noticed that the tails of all of my ribbons have a little triangle cut out of them. It’s simple to do. Just fold the ribbon in half lengthwise; then make a diagonal cut into the fold. That’s it.

6. Stick on Some Tape

12 Creative Wrapping Ideas | Iinspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday
There are lots of fun tapes on the market these days. I found this awesome wood tape and wrapped it around my package vertically and horizontally.

12 Creative Wrapping Ideas | Iinspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

To give it texture, I added twine to the top and finished things off with a wood snowflake.

7. Add a Photo

12 Creative Wrapping Ideas | Iinspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday
Speaking of tape, why not use more of it to add a photo? Did you know there’s such a thing as glitter tape? I must have been hiding under a rock because I just found this stuff, and I want to put it everywhere. Here, I used it to attach a photo of my dad to this package. Who needs name tags when you have photos?

8. Clip on A Clothespin

12 Creative Wrapping Ideas | Iinspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday
Clothespins are an easy way to attach something to a gift. Here, I used satin ribbon again to tie up my present and create a bow. Then, I added a photo. (Who wouldn’t want a present with my face on it? Haha! I kid!)

12 Creative Wrapping Ideas | Iinspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

However, you don’t need to limit yourself to photos. Clip on a gift tag, card, recipe, ornament, etc. You can get clothespins in almost any size or color. I even found these cute ones with “Merry Christmas” printed on them.

Another quick tip: When you’re shopping for seasonal wrapping paper, venture beyond the holiday wrapping paper section. Places like Target and Hallmark have great everyday paper. When paired with a seasonal paper or a festive embellishment, it can instantly fit this time of year.

9. Stick on Wood Embellishments

holiday wrapping tips
I found these wood embellishments at the craft store. They come packaged with adhesive on the back, so adding them to a package is simple.

festive holiday wrapping ideas

As I shared above, one of these embellishments in the center of your package can look great on its own. However, sometimes more is merrrier. Here, I lined trees up the side of the package. It’s all in the details.

10. Multiple Bows

12 Creative Wrapping Ideas | Iinspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday
We all have a collection of traditional sticky Christmas bows, right? These are classic and will always remind me of the season. I like to use them in an unexpected way by grouping several smaller bows on a package instead of one. It’s a bit excessive, but that’s what makes it fun. When grouping multiples, I stick to odd numbers.

11. Add an Ornament

12 Creative Wrapping Ideas | Iinspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

You may have already discovered the beautiful ornaments at places like the HomeGoods, the Dollar Store, Walmart, and the Dollar Spot at Target. I found this little house at Walmart for $1 and thought it made the perfect topper for a present.

12 Creative Wrapping Ideas | Iinspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

You can also use these thin wood cut out ornaments that are typically sold at craft stores.

12. Finish it with Twine

12 Creative Wrapping Ideas | Iinspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday
One thing I’ve been doing for the past few years is finishing off my packages with twine. After I add ribbon and create a bow, I add another level of detail with some twine. Again, the options for twine are endless these days. They have almost any color you could imagine. I’m especially loving the twine with the metallic thread woven into it. You know I love a little bling. I found this beautiful spool at HomeGoods.

12 Creative Wrapping Ideas | Iinspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

The twine also allows you to secure a gift tag or ornament.

I hope these twelve creative ideas inspire you to add a little something extra to your holiday wrapping this year. If you want a few more inspiration, be sure to check out my from Creative Holiday Wrapping Ideas post from last year.

Let’s Make Christmas Candy:

Speaking of baking (sort of), today’s recipe is a fun, quick, and delicious treat you can make for the holidays. It’s Crock Pot Candy!

And while this technically isn’t a cookie, I think it looks beautiful on a Christmas cookie platter. So, if you’re looking for more delicious cookie recipes, check out this post HERE. I’m sharing my favorite Christmas Cookie recipes

Now, I’m sure many of you have heard of this since it’s become so popular this year. It’s so yummy, however, that I had to give it some love on IBC. I’m not sure where this recipe originated, but I heard about it from my mom who got it from one of her good friends.

My mom and I share cookie making responsibility for the holidays. She makes half of the recipes and I make half. Then we split our baking bounty. Last year, she made Crock Pot Candy. When she gave it to me, I sort of turned my nose up at it. The joke was on me though because after one bite, I was hooked!

Ingredients:

The ingredient list is simple. Here are all of the things you will need:

  • dry roasted peanuts (like THESE
  • almond bark (I used chocolate, but vanilla will also work. Find HERE or at ALDI)
  • semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • German chocolate bar (HERE or available at most grocery store in the baking aisle.)
  • mini baking cups (like THESE)
  • sprinkles optional, but recommended. I used ones like THESE.

How to Make Crock Pot Candy:

Making this candy is truly simple. Just toss everything into a crock pot.Once all of the ingredients are melted, portion the mixture out and toss on some sprinkles.

I should warn you that this will yield a huge batch of delicious candy. And by huge, I mean around 175 pieces of candy. I know. It’s a lot.

Crock Pot Candy | inspiredbycharm.com #IBCholiday

This candy is fun to add to a cookie tray or package up as a small gift for a friends, family member, or coworker. Also, it’s super simple to make. Other than portioning the candy out and occasionally stirring, the crock pot really does all the work.

If you have yet to make this candy, I hope you will give it a try. Let me show you how.

This Crock Pot Candy just might be the ultimate holiday treat! Not only is it easy to make, it’s  really delicious and a great treat to share for Christmas.

Ingredients

  • 2 pounds dry-roasted peanuts
  • 2 pounds almond bark* - I used chocolate; however vanilla will also work.
  • 12 ounces semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 4- ounce German chocolate bar*
  • Mini paper baking cups
  • Sprinkles - optional garnish

Instructions

  • Put all of the ingredients in a crock pot. (Except for the sprinkles.) Cover and set the temperature to warm. Let sit for 1 hour; then stir the mixture. Continue to heat for another hour, stirring every 15-20 minutes for an additional hour or until the chocolate is completely melted.
  • Once everything is melted, portion out the candy into mini paper baking cups. (I found it helpful to place the cups in a mini muffin pan before filling them with the candy to help them keep their shape. This isn’t required, just helpful.) Top with sprinkles and allow to cool until set.
  • Pack and store in an airtight container.

Notes

*I found these ingredients at my local Wal-mart in the baking section. I’d assume that most well-stocked grocery stores / Wal-mart (with grocery section) will carry them.
As far as I know, these ingredients can not be replaced with something else to yield the same results.
