Christmas Ideas: Q&A

Within the past three years, I’ve decorated eight different Christmas trees. That’s a lot of trees, a ton of ornaments, and plenty of glitter. Right now, I’m in the process of putting together my trees for this year. I actually have to come up with 5 or 6 ideas because a special opportunity will require me to completely redecorate my home for Christmas after Christmas. (This has me both excited and stressed.)

At any rate, I thought it would be fun to take a look at Christmases Past as a way to offer Unique Christmas Tree Decorating Ideas. If you’re looking for even MORE Christmas tree ideas, I wrote another post with 20+ Ideas for Beautiful and Festive Christmas Tree Decorations. You can find that HERE. I have been styling trees for a local gift shop since I was in high school, so I have plenty of ideas.

Unique Christmas Tree Decorating Ideas:

First, let’s look at trees of a different color. Gone are the days of only having green trees. Nowadays, trees come in almost any color you could want. While I don’t get overly crazy, I have made a few unique choices.

Unique Christmas Tree Decorating Ideas | inspiredbycharm.com

This silver tree was one I styled for a brand in the summer so it never actually saw Christmas day. Nonetheless, I think it turned out pretty cute. The theme for this tree came from a collection of ornaments that featured sweet treats like cakes and ice cream.

pink-christmas-tree

If you’re thinking about styling a new tree, I find that having a color scheme or theme can be helpful. You’ll notice one or the other in all of my trees.

Another non-traditional colored tree that I styled was this gold tinsel one. When I saw this tree, it instantly gave me a vintage-Christmas feel. With that as inspiration, I decked it out with vintage ornaments I bought on eBay. Most of those ornaments are made from styrofoam balls, sequins, and pins. (I even made a fun little video for this tree. Check it out here.)

Unique Christmas Tree Decorating Ideas | inspiredbycharm.com

I also tucked in vintage light-up tree toppers around the tree for added color and light. This tree was featured last year in Romantic Homes Magazine.

Unique Christmas Tree Decorating Ideas | inspiredbycharm.com

My final tree-of-a-different-color was my navy blue one from 2014. People still tell me that this is their favorite IBC tree. (It’s definitely a favorite of mine, too.)

Unique Christmas Tree Decorating Ideas | inspiredbycharm.com

Here, I chose to stick with glass balls in a gradient effect. I started with dark blue at the bottom and worked my way to the top, ending with light green. Copper ornaments throughout tied it all together. If you’re ever hunting for great glass ornaments at a good price check HomeGoods. It’s one of my go-to sources every year for really beautiful ornaments.

Unique Christmas Tree Decorating Ideas | inspiredbycharm.com

Unique Christmas Tree Decorating Ideas | inspiredbycharm.com

I think a gradient effect is an especially fun way to decorate a tree. Last year, I did the same thing in my office. I started with red and worked my way up to light pink. That time I used copper and white to tie everything together.

Unique Christmas Tree Decorating Ideas | inspiredbycharm.com

Another popular non-traditional tree color is white. I’ve seen so many white trees popping up over the past couple years, but to be honest, I’m not mad about it.

Unique Christmas Tree Decorating Ideas | inspiredbycharm.com

Last year, my Adele-inspired Christmas tree was white and worked beautifully in my dining room. I struggled with that tree at first, but in the end, I couldn’t have been happier with it.

Unique Christmas Tree Decorating Ideas | inspiredbycharm.com

I am going to miss it this year. It popped against my dark gray walls.

I was also super excited to have this image featured in the current issue (December 2016) of HGTV Magazine. You’ll have to flip through the issue to see if you can find the photo.

Now, if you want to stick with a traditional green tree, but still mix things up a bit, I suggest looking for a flocked one. Within the past couple years, the demand for flocked trees has been incredible. I had my first flocked tree a couple years ago. I picked it up at Walmart in a moment of desperation. The quality wasn’t the best, but it did have the look I was after.

Unique Christmas Tree Decorating Ideas | inspiredbycharm.com

It’s no wonder that flocked trees have become popular. That snowy effect is magical.

Unique Christmas Tree Decorating Ideas | inspiredbycharm.com

And for all of you traditional tree lovers, have no fear, I created a few trees for you, too.

Unique Christmas Tree Decorating Ideas | inspiredbycharm.com

I called this tree, “Into the Woods.” It was inspired by a country cabin set among the trees. I still love that black and red check ribbon.

Unique Christmas Tree Decorating Ideas | inspiredbycharm.com

This tree continues to live on at my mom’s house. I’ve been recreating this exact tree for her for the past two years and will set it up again this year. However, I suspect she’ll soon be wanting something different, so I’m betting it’s the last year.

Last, but certainly not least, is my rainbow tree.

Unique Christmas Tree Decorating Ideas | inspiredbycharm.com

This is probably one of my most well-known trees. Here, I used all glass ornaments to create a gradient rainbow from top to bottom. Most of the ornaments are thrifted, but a few new ones are tucked in here and there. By my count, there are more than 300 glass balls on this tree. Pretty amazing, right?

Unique Christmas Tree Decorating Ideas | inspiredbycharm.com

Unique Christmas Tree Decorating Ideas | inspiredbycharm.com

However, given that most of these ornaments were purchased at HomeGoods and thrift shops, it’s an economical way to decorate a tree for big impact.

And that’s it. Three years and eight trees have yielded a fun and unique collection of holiday cheer. Don’t you agree? I hope you’ve enjoyed and been inspired by my creations.

This is my list of some of the Best Christmas Songs. A classic Christmas playlist that will put anyone and everyone in the holiday spirt.

It’s official. This past weekend I began listening to a few of the best Christmas songs  with this classic Christmas playlist. And, #SorryNotSorry. Last week was a rough one for many reasons, so enjoying the weekend with holiday tunes and a bottle of wine was just what I needed. I actually started designing my Christmas decor as well. I set up two trees (sans ornaments) and came up with a plan. And of course, when you’re putting up your tree, Christmas music must be playing in the background. Right?

Best Christmas Songs:

When I went looking for music, I realized I had no Christmas music playlists. Since I only began my Tuesday Tunes series this year, I had to start from scratch. In compiling a playlist, I also realized that one would not be enough. I ended up making five. I know that sounds excessive, but it will make sense when it all comes together.

Over the next few weeks as we head toward Christmas, I’ll be sharing more of the five playlists here on IBC. In other words, if you like holiday music, you’re in for a treat! I’m also thinking about giving away a collection of my favorite holiday albums as part of this year’s 12 Days of Christmas. Whatever happens, there’s a lot of excitement to look forward to.

I’m fully aware that some of you aren’t quite ready for Christmas music. That’s okay. I get it. But, for those who want to start celebrating now, let’s do this!

Tuesday Tunes / 16 - Classic Christmas | inspiredbycharm.com

To kick off this Tuesday Tunes holiday mini-series, I thought this classic Christmas playlist of some the best Christmas songs was in order.

These are songs some of the best Christmas songs from decades ago, such as Elvis singing Blue Christmas, Brenda Lee with Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree, and The Beach Boys harmonizing on Little Saint Nick. As much as I enjoy contemporary sounds, there’s just something about these classics. They seem to have a magical way of stirring up that Christmas spirit in your heart.

This post is sponsored by DIGIORNO pizza. As always, all opinions are my own.

It seems that there’s an important football game on every day of the week during the fall and winter. What better way to celebrate then spending time with friends and family over food (especially pizza). No matter what the celebration, I always think it’s fun to have a few decorations and details that add to the festivities. So today, I’m inviting you to my DIY Football Pizza Party.

DIY Football Pizza Party | inspiredbycharm.com

DIY Football Pizza Party | inspiredbycharm.com

DIY Football Pizza Party | inspiredbycharm.com

Not only are we going to dive into DIGIORNO pizza’s piping hot and crispy crust pizzas, but I’m going to give you four creative ideas to DIY your way to a festive football game-watching experience. Each of these ideas can be whipped up in under 20 or so minutes, which happens to be just about how long it takes to bake a DIGIORNO Original RISING CRUST pizza.

DIY Football Pizza Party | inspiredbycharm.com

DIY Football Pizza Party | inspiredbycharm.com

Since we have a lot to cover, let’s get right to it!

First, we’re going to make lettered football-themed napkins.

DIY Football Pizza Party | inspiredbycharm.com

Lettered Football Napkins

For this project, your will need:
Lettered printable (It’s free! Download it here.)
Green cotton napkins
Fabric transfer sheets
Scissors

Begin by downloading the free printable. Then, print it on the fabric transfer sheets. Cut them into strips to fit your napkins.

DIY Football Pizza Party | inspiredbycharm.com

Next, follow the directions on your particular fabric transfer sheet to transfer the design to each napkin. (This typically involves ironing your transfer sheet onto the fabric for about 2 minutes. Allow the sheet to cool, and then peel off the paper backing.)

DIY Football Pizza Party | inspiredbycharm.com

It’s that simple. Your football-themed napkins are ready for the party!

DIY Football Pizza Party | inspiredbycharm.com

Since these are iron-on transfers, you’re not just transferring the text you printed, but the whole strip. I used that to my advantage by cutting out a uniform strip and making it part of my design.

Also, while I’ve provided you with a free download of some common football terms, feel free to create your own with your favorite words, teams, or players.

DIY Football Pizza Party | inspiredbycharm.com

With the napkins complete, we need something to serve the pizza. Let’s craft some custom football-themed pizza servers.

DIY Football Pizza Party | inspiredbycharm.com

Football Pizza Servers

For this project, you will need:
Wood handled pizza server
Washi tape
Paint
Paint brush

Begin by taping off the metal part of the pizza server with washi tape. Then paint the wood handle a solid color. I chose green, white, and brown for my servers. Apply a second coat.

DIY Football Pizza Party | inspiredbycharm.com

Once the paint is dry, it’s time for a design. On my server with the brown handle, I added laces like those on a football. On the white handled one, I made black stripes to mimic a referee’s shirt. On the green one, I put smaller stripes so that it resembled a football field.

DIY Football Pizza Party | inspiredbycharm.com

Depending on your skill level, you can freehand the designs or use more washi tape to section off areas you’d like to paint.

Once the paint is dry, remove any washi tape, and your football-themed pizza servers are ready for duty.

DIY Football Pizza Party | inspiredbycharm.com

DIY Football Pizza Party | inspiredbycharm.com

I picked these plain servers up for a steal. I think they were only a couple dollars a piece. Adding a little paint is an easy way to jazz them up for a party.

DIY Football Pizza Party | inspiredbycharm.com

My personal favorite is the football one!

Moving on to our third DIY project: After all the work, I think it’s time for a drink. Because you know how much I like garnishing things, let’s whip up some gold helmet drink stirrers.

DIY Football Pizza Party | inspiredbycharm.com

Helmet Drink Stirrers

For this project, you will need:
Mini football helmets
Gold spray paint
E-6000 glue
Plastic drink stirrers

Begin by spray painting your mini helmets gold. (I recommend gold, but you can use any color you wish.)

DIY Football Pizza Party | inspiredbycharm.com

Once they are painted (inside and out) and have completely dried, apply glue to the inside of the helmets and attach a drink stirrer to each. Allow the stirrers to dry for several hours before using them.

DIY Football Pizza Party | inspiredbycharm.com

How cool are these!?

DIY Football Pizza Party | inspiredbycharm.com

I promise your football-watching friends will get a kick of out them and congratulate you on your creativity.

Our fourth DIY project is a football and yard line-inspired garland.

DIY Football Pizza Party | inspiredbycharm.com

Football Yard Line Garland

For this project, you will need:
Football and yard line printable (It’s free! Download it here.)
Scissors
Twine
Mini clothes pins

Begin by downloading the free printables. Print them out and use a scissors to cut out the footballs and yard line pendants.

DIY Football Pizza Party | inspiredbycharm.com

Then, using the mini clothespins, attach them to your twine.

DIY Football Pizza Party | inspiredbycharm.com

Touchdown! It’s that simple.

DIY Football Pizza Party | inspiredbycharm.com

Hang the garland near your TV or use it to decorate your table.

DIY Football Pizza Party | inspiredbycharm.com

Now to take your DIY Football Pizza Party over the top, use a roll of 12-inch craft paper for a table runner. Measure it to fit your table; then with a felt-tip marker, draw on x’s, o’s, and arrows as seen in a coach’s playbook.

DIY Football Pizza Party | inspiredbycharm.com

Isn’t this a super simple way to add an interesting and fun detail to the best pizza party ever?

DIY Football Pizza Party | inspiredbycharm.com

Now that the DIY portions of this party is complete, let’s have some pizza. I’m serving up DIGIORNO Original RISING CRUST Supreme, DIGIORNO Original RISING CRUST Pepperoni, and DIGIORNO Original RISING CRUST Three Meat pizzas. (Check out more of their delicious flavor combinations here.) DIGIORNO pizzas help you rise to the occasion because it comes piping hot and crispy, straight from your oven in minutes, so you can spend less time in the kitchen and more time focused on the fun. Perfect!

Happy Friendsgiving!

Earlier today I shared a post with lots of tips for hosting a Friendsgiving celebration. As I set up the shoot last weekend, I had tunes playing in the background. Mostly, they were folksy acoustic jams that perfectly complemented the festivities. As I read through my post this morning, I kept thinking something was missing. I quickly realized it was the music!

As most of you know, music is an important part of my life. (One of the reasons for my Tuesday Tunes series!) To put together this Celebrate Friendsgiving! playlist, I compiled the tracks I was listening to over the weekend along with a few new favorites.

Tuesday Tunes: Celebrate Friendsgiving! inspiredbycharm.com

It’s a fun folksy mix of happy tunes that will make the ideal soundtrack for enjoying time with your friends. You’ll notice your foot tapping, but you’ll still be able to carry on a conversation. Yes!

And don’t worry, if you’re not hosting or attending Friendsgiving, this playlist will work just as well for Thanksgiving or even a chill afternoon or evening at home by yourself.

You can use the playlist above or listen directly on Spotify by clicking here.

If you’re enjoying my music selections, please subscribe to my profile for access to all of my favorite tracks, plus sneak listens to my upcoming Tuesday Tunes playlist.

I hope you have a happy, gratitude-filled holiday with your loved ones.

During the holiday season, I love to gather with friends and family and celebrate with good food, cocktails, and conversation. That’s why today, I’m sharing my Tips for Celebrating Friendsgiving.

Tips for Celebrating Friendsgiving | inspiredbycharm.com

My friends over at 1-800-Flowers.com are also joining the festivities. They were kind enough to provide me with beautiful flower arrangements to help get my Friendsgiving party started. Did you know that they offer a huge variety of gorgeous blooms for Thanksgiving, Friendsgiving, and the rest of the holiday season? Be sure to check out their entire selection here. (Also, pay attention to the end of this post for details on how you can enter to win an arrangement for your Friendsgiving celebration.)

In addition to all of that awesomeness, I’m super excited to be joining the Blogger Stylin’ Home Tour: Thanksgiving Table Edition. If you’re coming to IBC from your visit to A Designer at Home, welcome! Corinna’s bohemian-inspired tablescape is so fun! If you’d like to start at the beginning, click over to the The White Buffalo Styling Co., the host of the Blogger Stylin’ Home Tours (BHST).

As a stop on this BSHT, I’ll be showing you my own Friendsgiving tablescape and sharing tips and tricks for creating your own celebration.

Tips for Celebrating Friendsgiving | inspiredbycharm.com

In my opinion, the premise behind Friendsgiving is to have a relaxed and enjoyable meal with friends whose company you treasure. While Thanksgiving can often be a stressful day (especially if you’re the host), Friendsgiving should be fun and stress free. Let me walk you through some of my tips to help you achieve that.

As some of you probably know, I always recommend picking your color palette first when planning any event. There are a lot of decisions that need to be made when you entertain, and having a color scheme limits some of those choices immediately. It can even help with your food and beverage decisions. In choosing my colors, I pulled inspiration from the 1-800-Flowers.com Garden of Grandeur for Fall arrangement. With pops of red, orange, green, and purple, it’s perfect for the season and my space.

Tips for Celebrating Friendsgiving | inspiredbycharm.com

For Friendsgiving, I recommend hosting a potluck. As the host, you cook the main course (in my case, roasted chicken), and ask each guest to bring a favorite dish of the season. Not only does this cut down on the work and expense for the host, but it also makes everyone feel a part of the celebration.

Tips for Celebrating Friendsgiving | inspiredbycharm.com

Tips for Celebrating Friendsgiving | inspiredbycharm.com

(Did you notice that I roasted my chicken upside down? In my defense, this was only the third whole bird I’ve ever cooked. I should just stick with appetizers and desserts, right?)

Tips for Celebrating Friendsgiving | inspiredbycharm.com

Another thing I love to do for any party is to create a signature cocktail. While it’s a good idea to also have several standard beverage options available, a signature cocktail gives your guests a chance to try something different. Plus, you can match the drink to the theme of your celebration.

Tips for Celebrating Friendsgiving | inspiredbycharm.com

For this celebration, I decided to make Apple Pie Moonshine. (Tomorrow I’ll be posting the recipe here on IBC.) I thought this drink would be just the thing for a group of friends since it’s typically served in shot glasses.

Tips for Celebrating Friendsgiving | inspiredbycharm.com

Tips for Celebrating Friendsgiving | inspiredbycharm.com

Offering a toast with friends can be an excellent opportunity to say the things we’re thankful for and to celebrate another year of friendship.

Tips for Celebrating Friendsgiving | inspiredbycharm.com

Tips for Celebrating Friendsgiving | inspiredbycharm.com

I also recommend that you start thinking now about some of the things you’ll need to host Friendsgiving instead of waiting to the night before your guests arrive. Check to make sure you have enough entertaining supplies, test your recipes (so you’re not roasting your chicken upside down on the big day), and stock up on ingredients. If you’re ordering flowers, place the order now so that it will arrive a day or two before your celebration. This will give your beautiful blooms a chance to open, and you’ll have less to worry about the day of the event.

Tips for Celebrating Friendsgiving | inspiredbycharm.com

I added a pair of the In Love with Fall Bouquets™ to my side board and bar cart to wrap the room in flowers. The gold vases had me the minute I saw them. You know how much I love gold.

Tips for Celebrating Friendsgiving | inspiredbycharm.com

Speaking of flowers, if you have a few greens or blooms left after you’ve styled your arrangement, don’t toss them. Gather up small bud vases and fill them with the extras. These mini-arrangements are perfect for your bar cart, the bathroom vanity, or any corner of your home that needs a bit of brightening.

Tips for Celebrating Friendsgiving | inspiredbycharm.com

Strive for excellence when entertaining, but remember to keep things simple. While you may want to have the most elaborate Friendsgiving, often less is more. Limit your menu, decorations, and even your guest list. With fewer things to plan, buy, and cook, entertaining becomes much less of a fuss.

Tips for Celebrating Friendsgiving | inspiredbycharm.com

Also, Friendsgiving is a great opportunity to do something fun, but not overly fancy with your décor. In that spirit, I opted to use chalkboard paper as a table runner. It’s the ideal place to list your menu, and then, during the meal, you can encourage friends to write messages to one another. Tapping into your inner child at Friendsgiving is one way to keep things lighthearted.

Also, don’t forget some tunes for your celebration. Create your own playlist, or check out my Tuesday Tunes: Celebrate Friendsgiving playlist here.

Tips for Celebrating Friendsgiving | inspiredbycharm.com

Tips for Celebrating Friendsgiving | inspiredbycharm.com

Tips for Celebrating Friendsgiving | inspiredbycharm.com

Keep in mind that a dinner party with friends shouldn’t break the bank. When purchasing décor and supplies for your gathering, mix in reusable items that you’ll want to keep for years to come. Also bring in things that are truly special and unique. Personalization and DIY projects are two ways to do this.

Tips for Celebrating Friendsgiving | inspiredbycharm.com

Finally, remember to relax and enjoy yourself. A stressed out or nervous host isn’t fun to be around. I recommend sitting down and having a cocktail (or a shot of Apple Pie Moonshine!) 5-10 minutes before the event starts. This allows you to enjoy the fruits of your labor, and it gives you a chance to relax before guests arrive. After all, that’s what the holiday season is really about. There’s no sense in entertaining if you can’t enjoy the party, too!

I hope these tips and ideas are helpful for celebrating Friendsgiving and putting together your own unique tablescape.

Apple, cranberries, and seasonal spices come together to make this delicious Fall Harvest Overnight Oats. It’s the perfect recipe for busy fall mornings.

With the change of seasons, comes the chance for new breakfast dishes. Earlier this year I shared my recipe for Overnight Oats. Now that fall’s here, I’ve revisited my classic overnight oats recipe to take advantage of the flavors of autumn. Let’s dig into a bowl of Fall Harvest Overnight Oats.

Fall Harvest Overnight Oats | inspiredbycharm.com

I’ve been a fan of overnight oats for years. However, when I was introduced to them back in 2005, we called them muesli. Eleven years later, overnight night oats have become a breakfast staple for many.

In the fall, as temperatures start to cool, I often want something warm in the morning for breakfast. But I do have days when I crave my go-to overnight oats. That’s why I got the idea to incorporate some of my favorite hearty flavors: maple syrup, cranberries, apples, walnuts, and a dash of cinnamon to bring it all together.

How do you make Overnight Oats?

Fall Harvest Overnight Oats | inspiredbycharm.com

Fall Harvest Overnight Oats | inspiredbycharm.com

Fall Harvest Overnight Oats | inspiredbycharm.com

It’s really quite perfect. I don’t think I’ll ever tire of this dish.

The best part about overnight oats is that you can use the ingredients and flavors you love. Don’t like walnuts? Try almonds. Not a fan of apple? How about pears? Mix it up until you find a combination worth waking up to.

Fall Harvest Overnight Oats | inspiredbycharm.com

Everything gets mixed up in a sealable container before you head off to bed. In the morning, it’s ready to serve straight from the refrigerator.

Fall Harvest Overnight Oats | inspiredbycharm.com

To make mine look a bit prettier (You know me.), I added extra apple slices, Greek yogurt, cranberries, and cinnamon. However, if you’re not looking to impress anyone or are tight on time, this step isn’t necessary. Just dive right in.

Looks pretty good, right? If you haven’t eaten overnight oats, I hope I’ve tempted you. Let us know if you give these Fall Harvest Overnight Oats a try.

What’s your go-to breakfast this time of year?

Fall Harvest Overnight Oats Recipe:

Fall Harvest Overnight Oats

Serves two

Here's what you will need:
1 cup old-fashioned oats
1 tablespoon flax seeds
1 tablespoon chia seeds
1 1/2 cups cashew milk (or almond milk)
1 tablespoon maple syrup
1/2 cup Greek yogurt
1/4 cup dried cranberries
1 cup apple, thinly chopped
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
2 tablespoons walnuts
Additional apple, cranberries, Greek yogurt, and cinnamon stick for garnish

To a container that has a lid, add the old-fashioned oats, flax seeds, chia seeds, cashew milk, maple syrup, Greek yogurt, dried cranberries, apple, and cinnamon. Stir to combine. Cover and store in the refrigerator for 6 hours or overnight.

Divide the oat mixture into two bowls. Top with a spoonful of Greek yogurt and garnish with sliced apple, cranberries, and a cinnamon stick.

Last week I traveled to San Francisco and Napa Valley for a blogger retreat. To my delight, fellow blogger, friend, and Fall-Cookie-Week-Partner, Julie Blanner had also been invited! Since it’s not every day that we get to travel across the country, Julie and I decided to extend the trip a couple days in order to explore Napa Valley.

Julie had been to Napa Valley before, but this was my first visit. Regardless, both of us were excited about visiting an area of the country that’s known for amazing wine and beautiful scenery. It had also been a couple years since we got to hang out in person, so that was the real joy of our time out there.

A Visit to Napa Valley | inspiredbycharm.com

A Visit to Napa Valley | inspiredbycharm.com

We decided to stay in downtown Napa at the The Westin Verasa Napa. Thanks to Westin’s generosity, we were able to get the media rate, which we both greatly appreciated. (Thanks Westin!)

A Visit to Napa Valley | inspiredbycharm.com

The hotel is centrally located, making it a great starting and ending point for excursions into wine country. We also appreciated the complimentary afternoon wine tasting and tapas. I mean, who wouldn’t.

A Visit to Napa Valley | inspiredbycharm.com

Despite a few rainy days (which didn’t bother either of us), Julie and I had a wonderful time in Napa. If you enjoy good wine and stunning views, I can’t recommend it enough. However, being that it was my first time there, I was surprised by a few things. Let me explain.

A Visit to Napa Valley | inspiredbycharm.com

First off, if you’re looking to taste at any winery in Napa, you will typically need to make an appointment. This means that you must call ahead and get a reservation. We had no issues getting same-day or next-day reservations. However, if you have any must-visit-wineries, it’s smart to call ahead. Also, keep in mind that most open at 10 AM and close at 4 PM. I’d say you can probably visit 4 or 5 per day without feeling rushed.

A Visit to Napa Valley | inspiredbycharm.com

A Visit to Napa Valley | inspiredbycharm.com

Second, most of the wineries we visited in Napa charged a tasting fee. And I’m not talking $5. The fees ranged from $25 to $75. Coming from PA, that was a bit of sticker shot for me since most wine tastings in my part of the country are free or only cost a couple bucks.

With that being said, the price is well worth it. Not only are you tasting wines that cost from $35 to $300 per bottle, you’re also paying for the experience. In most instances, you are given your own table and a personal guide to walk you through the flight of wines. I actually found it to be a nice change from having to force down as many tastings as you can surrounded by people trying to do the same.

Another thing to note is that many wineries will waive the fee if you purchase wine. We often asked how many bottles or how much money we needed to spend to get the waiver. Some wineries will also print that information on their menu if you’re uncomfortable asking.

A Visit to Napa Valley | inspiredbycharm.com

Also, while you are tasting, don’t be afraid to ask to try other wines that are on the menu, but not part of the tasting. In most cases, the winery will have a bottle open and be happy to offer a sample. The vintners want you to enjoy their wines, and given that everyone likes something different, they want you to find what pleases your palate.

I also recommend checking out a few wineries that aren’t necessarily mainstream. Julie and I stumbled on Madrigal Family Winery at the end of our first day. Because they weren’t crowded, the host, Alejandro, offered us a walking tour through the winery and vineyard. While it’s fun to visit wineries whose names you know, I love getting off the beaten path and trying something new. Yes, it’s riskier, but I find that’s often where the magic happens.

Of the wineries we visited, I have to give a shout out to a few of my favorites. They include Madrigal Family Wines, Frog’s Leap, Joseph Phelps Vineyards, and Larkmead. (I found the property at Larkmead to be especially beautiful!)

All in all, we had a fabulous experience in Napa, and I’m looking to a return trip very soon.

Have you been to Napa? What are your favorite wineries or suggestions for tastings?

Last week I traveled to San Francisco and Napa Valley for a blogger retreat. To my delight, fellow blogger, friend, and Fall-Cookie-Week-Partner, Julie Blanner had also been invited! Since it’s not every day that we get to travel across the country, Julie and I decided to extend the trip a couple days in order to […]

Here are some festive and creative decorations for your Thanksgiving table.

As I mentioned last week, I’m going to start talking about the holidays now in hopes of getting ideas out there so you can implement the ones you like with less stress. So today I thought I would share some creative Thanksgiving table decorations if you wanted to add a simple festive touch to your Thanksgiving table. It really doesn’t take much to make it feel special and festive. Let’s get to it!

Thanksgiving Table Decorations:

Look to Nature

With Mother Nature putting on a colorful show, let’s start there for inspiration.

Thanksgiving Place Setting

Something as simple as a few leaves and acorns can dress up a plate for the season. The bold colors of autumn leaves will make your table pop; plus they are free.

Thanksgiving Place Setting

Apples can also be used. I had great success with them on my table during my Fall Home Tour. What made them extra special was that the stems and leaves were still attached. I was lucky enough to pick these from my own yard, but you can visit a local orchard or even glue a stem and leaves on a store-bought apple.

Craft a Personalized Tag

I recently made these fun and unique DIY Tag Banners as fall décor. Once I was finished with them for fall and Halloween, I realized they would make great tags for my table.

Thanksgiving Place Setting

Thanksgiving Place Setting

Each tag is simply adorned with a large foil alphabet sticker and tied to a rolled up napkin with twine. If you use letters that correspond to the initial of the first name of each of your guests, the tags can do double duty as place cards.

DIY a Cork Placemat

Speaking of DIY, if you’re looking to get more hands-on with your table décor, try whipping up these over-sized cork leaves. They can serve as placemats, a table runner, or even a trivet for hot foods.

However you use them, this simple DIY project is guaranteed to give chic seasonal style to your table. Get the full tutorial for these as well as free leaf templates here.

Stamp a Graphic Napkin

As I shared in a post a few weeks ago here on Design Happy, you can personalize your napkins using rubber stamps and ink. Learn how to make them here.

Whether you spell out the names of your guests, add a holiday greeting, or simply use a seasonal graphic such as leaves or pumpkins, this is a fun and easy way to bring a completely original touch to each place setting.

More Thanksgiving Table Decoration Ideas:

Make a Mini Rosemary Wreath

If you still have rosemary in your garden, why not create a mini wreath. All you need is floral wire, twine, and a fresh sprig of rosemary.

Thanksgiving Place Setting

Simply tie the rosemary to the floral wire using a small piece of twine. Then, wrap the floral wire around the rosemary and shape it into a circle. Snip off any excess floral wire and tie the twine into a bow. With that, your mini wreath is complete.

These wreaths are beautiful, and so fragrant.

Add a Pop of Color with Wheat

If you prefer a more modern look for your table, try dressing up stalks of wheat with colorful embroidery floss.

You can find the full tutorial for how to create these.

Thanksgiving Place Setting

Clustered in a vase, they make a colorful centerpiece for your Thanksgiving table. Or you can lay one or two on top of a plate for a simple embellishment.

Eye-catching, right? I think this idea might be my favorite.

I hope you found one or two or maybe more of these Thanksgiving table decorations ideas useful or inspiriting for dressing up your own table this Thanksgiving. What traditional or creative ways do you deck out your place settings for the holidays?

I don’t know about you, but when I’m traveling with my passport, I’m constantly worried I’ll lose it. It’s such a thin, little book that I never quite know where to put it. I needed something to make it more substantial and easier to spot, and protect it at the same time. My solution: a DIY No-Sew Passport Cover.

DIY No-Sew Passport Cover | inspiredbycharm.com

This cover is simple to make, and it looks chic.

Now I can’t wait to take it with me when my mom and I go on our next Carnival Cruise. We have one scheduled for 2017, and we couldn’t be more excited. I booked us on the new Carnival Vista. (Have you seen the new ship? It looks amazing!)

Since I wasn’t in the mood to drag out my sewing machine for this project, I headed to the store to figure out a way to DIY a passport cover without sewing.

DIY No-Sew Passport Cover | inspiredbycharm.com

Can you tell what I used?

It’s a mend and repair denim patch kit!

DIY No-Sew Passport Cover | inspiredbycharm.com

These kits are available in a variety of denim colors, and they include a couple patches that are the right size for a passport cover. With their adhesive backing, the two patches can be ironed together. The colorful felt in between them creates a cozy and safe pocket for a passport.

DIY No-Sew Passport Cover | inspiredbycharm.com

Inspired by the DIY Felt Cable Organizers I made a couple months ago, I decided to add a snap to ensure the passport stayed inside.

DIY No-Sew Passport Cover | inspiredbycharm.com

Plus, now I have a little matching set of travel accessories.

In 10 minutes or so, you can whip up one of these passport covers too. Let me walk you through the steps.

DIY No-Sew Passport Cover | inspiredbycharm.com

Here’s what you will need:
Mend and repair denim patch kit
12 x 9″ piece of felt
Snap kit
Felt tip marker
Scissors
Hole punch
Iron
Hammer
Passport (as a guide)

For this project, make sure you find a mend and repair denim patch kit that includes two large patches backed with iron-on adhesive.

DIY No-Sew Passport Cover | inspiredbycharm.com

Using one patch as a pattern, trace the shape onto a piece of felt with a felt tip marker. Since you need two of the felt shape, first fold the large piece of felt in half. (This will allow you to cut out both of the shapes at one time.)

DIY No-Sew Passport Cover | inspiredbycharm.com

Next, using your passport as a guide, make three marks on the bottom and sides to show where the passport will sit in your pouch. These marks are necessary so you don’t trim off too much when cutting out the felt.

DIY No-Sew Passport Cover | inspiredbycharm.com

Now you’re ready to cut the felt. The top should be trimmed in line with the pattern you traced. For the sides and the bottom, you’ll want to cut in about a quarter-inch from the line.

As you can see below, doing this allows the adhesive on the sides and bottom of the patches to seal the pouch together. The top will stay open because the felt prevents it from sealing.

DIY No-Sew Passport Cover | inspiredbycharm.com

Next, you’re ready to iron. Stack the patches so that the two sides with the adhesive are together with the felt in between.

DIY No-Sew Passport Cover | inspiredbycharm.com

With your iron on the cotton setting (Do not use steam.), iron each area of the cover for 30-45 seconds. Do this on both sides. Pay special attention to the edges to make sure they are bonded.

DIY No-Sew Passport Cover | inspiredbycharm.com

By ironing, you will seal the edges as well as adhere the denim patches to the felt to create a felt pocket.

DIY No-Sew Passport Cover | inspiredbycharm.com

Next, using a pair of scissors, trim off any overhanging felt or uneven places along the edges of the denim patches.

DIY No-Sew Passport Cover | inspiredbycharm.com

Finally, attach the snaps. Use a hole punch to create a hole in the same spot on both layers of the material in the center about 1/2-inch down from the top. (I recommend inserting your passport into the pouch to find the best spot so your passport will fit when the snaps are closed.

DIY No-Sew Passport Cover | inspiredbycharm.com

When the holes have been made, you’re ready to attach the snaps. (Make sure your kit includes the tools required to attach the snaps.) Follow the instructions on your particular snap kit. This process is simple; just be sure to attach the snaps the correct way so that they will connect when closing your passport cover.

DIY No-Sew Passport Cover | inspiredbycharm.com

And with that, your DIY No-Sew Passport Cover is complete!

DIY No-Sew Passport Cover | inspiredbycharm.com

This cover is so cute and practical. Given the variety of colors of denim patches, felt, and snaps that are available today, you can come up with a combination to match your travel gear.

DIY No-Sew Passport Cover | inspiredbycharm.com

Plus, there’s room in the cover to tuck in other things such as cash, credit cards, or even your Carnival Sign and Sail card. (You will use this card for identification and to make purchases on the ship.) When you go on a Carnival cruise, it’s essential that you carry your passport and Sign and Sail Card with you when you exit the ship at any port of call. Having these items in one place is a great way to stay organized.

DIY No-Sew Passport Cover | inspiredbycharm.com

I decided to keep my DIY No-Sew Passport Cover plain on the front, but feel free to add accessories and embellishments. You could even dust off that BeDazzler in your closet. Have fun and make the cover your own.

I hope you enjoyed this DIY. Happy traveling!

Tuesday Tunes 14 Ultimate Halloween Playlist | inspiredbycharm.com

It’s been a few years since I attended a Halloween party, but I’ll be celebrating this coming weekend with my family. I’ve been having a lot of fun working on my costume. It’s in the style of steampunk. (In case you’re not familiar with steampunk, it’s a science-fiction/fantasy genre and design aesthetic inspired by the industrial steam-powered machinery of the Victorian era.) I’ve got myself a top hat, goggles, vest, leather accessories, piping, gears, etc. My costume combines purchased and homemade items. I’m pretty pumped about it.

Anywho, no matter how you celebrate this holiday, I hope this playlist serves you well. If you need a few last-minute Halloween décor ideas, check out the IBC archives here.

Okay, you might be thinking: “It’s October, and he’s already starting to talk about the holiday season.” In an ideal world, I wouldn’t bring up Christmas until after Thanksgiving. However, if I waited until then, many of the ideas, recipes, and DIYs I want to share would come too late and be rather useless.

With November on our heels, you can expect to start seeing a sprinkling of Christmas-related posts on IBC. If you don’t celebrate the holiday or have any interest in holiday talk until after Thanksgiving, please just keep scrolling. I don’t want to upset anyone by focusing on the holidays, but I do think we should be kind of used to the early start at this point. My holiday philosophy: Do what makes you happy, and be kind to others.

With all that being said, let’s get into this.

If you’re anything like me, come mid-December, holiday panic sets in. There are cookies to be made, gifts to be purchased, Christmas cards to be addressed, and lights to be strung. At one point, it seemed that you had all the time in the world to get ready, but then you blink and become a stressed-out mess because there are a million things to do and only days to do them. Well, that’s how it is for me. Maybe I’m just terrible at time management. (Maybe? Ha! I’m pretty terrible at time management.)

For the past couple years, I’ve haven’t fully enjoyed the holidays because I’ve been crazy busy baking, shopping, and decorating. This year, I want to change that by starting early. My goal is not to do more, but to spread out the tasks so that when the week of Christmas rolls around, I can relax in my pjs and stare at my Christmas lights while scarfing down cookies, watching Christmas movies, and spending lots of time with people I love.

Want to join me? These are my tips for getting a head start on the holidays.

Bake in Advance

Did you know that a lot of Christmas cookies and baked goods can be made ahead, frozen, and then defrosted when the holidays arrive? It’s true! So why not start now? Figure out which of your cookies are a pain to make, knock them out in November, and freeze them for later.

Tips for Getting a Head Start on the Holiday Season | inspiredbycharm.com

Yes, baking cookies is one of the things I especially enjoy doing during the Christmas season. However, I always reach a point (usually around the fifth recipe) when it’s no longer a joy. Baking a batch each week leading up to the holidays stretches out the pleasure and keeps it from becoming a burden.

Not sure what to bake? Check out all of IBC’s cookie recipes here.

Also, start shopping now for recipe ingredients and entertaining staples that won’t go bad over the next couple months: flour, sugar, alcohol, crackers, chips, etc. Imagine not having to run to the liquor store on Christmas Eve because you’re out of ingredients for White Russians.

Start those Holiday Cards

Sending holiday cards is a must for me and something I truly enjoy. But staying up until 2 AM on December 20 to get them out before Christmas isn’t so much fun. So why not start now while you binge watch your new favorite show on Netflix?

Tips for Getting a Head Start on the Holiday Season | inspiredbycharm.com

Even if you start by reorganizing your address book, writing out the envelopes, or placing your card order (Yep, most online card companies have their holiday line out already.), you can be two steps ahead and cut down on that last-minute frustration.

Begin Shopping

Going to a mall (or any store for that matter) during the month of December is probably one of my least favorite things. And that’s coming from someone who loves to shop. Over the past couple years, it seems that more and more people are rude and grumpy during the holidays, so being surrounded by hundreds of them while shopping just isn’t fun for me.

Tips for Getting a Head Start on the Holiday Season | inspiredbycharm.com

Start your gift buying now before the madness begins. I have a couple folks on my list who get the same thing each year, so I’ve already placed those orders. If you need little things, such as stocking stuffers, gift cards, or a gift for the mail carrier, start picking up those items now to eliminate a bit of the stress later.

Done shopping and need some creative wrapping ideas? Check out mine here.

Declutter

This is a big one. During the holidays, excess “stuff” seems to accumulate so now is the time to make room for it. Start by clearing off a couple closet shelves and emptying a drawer for overnight visitors. If you can, look through your seasonal decor and donate items you won’t be using. Go through your closet and get rid of any clothes that are damaged or don’t quite fit anymore. You can even clear the fridge and your cabinets of items that have expired.

Tips for Getting a Head Start on the Holiday Season | inspiredbycharm.com

Trust me, having all this newly discovered free space will help when lots of holiday “stuff” starts to pile up. Plus, you can prevent those Clark Griswold mishaps.

And that’s it, friends. It seems simple, but when the chaos starts, it’s easy to forget. I’m on a mission to be a happier, less-stressed person this holiday season so I can truly enjoy the most wonderful time of the year. Won’t you join me?

What tips or tricks do you have for getting a jump on holiday preparations? Let us know in the comments below.

Okay, you might be thinking: “It’s October, and he’s already starting to talk about the holiday season.” In an ideal world, I wouldn’t bring up Christmas until after Thanksgiving. Sausage, Rice, and Cranberry Stuffed Mini Pumpkins:

Did you know you can use mini pumpkins for cooking? Well you can, and they make the most adorable fall side dish ever. What do you think?

Sausage, Rice, and Cranberry Mini Stuffed Pumpkins | inspiredbycharm.com

This post is sponsored by Mars SEEDS OF CHANGE® and Target.

This idea popped into my head after my friends over at SEEDS OF CHANGE® approached me about creating a seasonal recipe using their super tasty and Ready-to-Heat Rice. With plenty of mini pumpkins already on hand, I thought about what delicious combination of flavors to stuff inside them. Sausage, sweet onion, mushrooms, pecans, cranberries, kale, Parmigiano-Reggiano, seasonal spices, and of course, rice came together for a flavor combination that’s quintessentially fall.

Sausage, Rice, and Cranberry Mini Stuffed Pumpkins | inspiredbycharm.com

Now stuff all of that goodness into a mini pumpkin, and what’s not to love?

While combining all of these flavors is bound to be delicious, this dish also wins on presentation. Who knew roasted mini pumpkins could look so tasty?

How to Make Stuffed Mini Pumpkins:

Sausage, Rice, and Cranberry Mini Stuffed Pumpkins | inspiredbycharm.com

With a sharp knife, the tops of these mini pumpkins come off easily. I cut about 1/3 of the way down from the top.

Sausage, Rice, and Cranberry Mini Stuffed Pumpkins | inspiredbycharm.com

Sausage, Rice, and Cranberry Mini Stuffed Pumpkins | inspiredbycharm.com

Once you scoop out the seeds (which you can save for roasting), there’s plenty of room in these guys for stuffing. I decided to heap them with stuffing to get as much in there as I could.

Sausage, Rice, and Cranberry Mini Stuffed Pumpkins | inspiredbycharm.com

Sausage, Rice, and Cranberry Mini Stuffed Pumpkins | inspiredbycharm.com

The particular combination of flavors in this stuffing makes it especially good. With sweetness from the cranberries, crunch from the pecans, green color from the kale, and seasonal spices such as thyme and nutmeg, it’s the perfect savory complement to an autumn meal.

And don’t forget the pumpkin; you can eat that too. There’s not much in there, but it’s just enough to enjoy with the stuffing. Honestly, it’s almost a meal in itself.

Okay, enough pumpkin talk. Let me show you how to make them.

I can’t get over how adorable these stuffed mini pumpkins are. I’m in love.

I gave a few of them to my mom and grandma to enjoy for dinner, and they gave the pumpkins rave reviews. “Delicious! Very savory with the perfect seasonings.”

Create a seasonal side dish that wows in both flavor and appearance with these Sausage, Rice, and Cranberry Stuffed Mini Pumpkins.

Ingredients

  • 8-10 mini pumpkins
  • 2-3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 pound ground pork sausage
  • 3/4 cup chopped sweet onion
  • 1 cup roughly chopped crimini mushrooms
  • 1/2 cup apple cider
  • 1 cup chopped raw pecans
  • 1/8 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 2 teaspoons chopped fresh thyme
  • 1 cup dried cranberries
  • 1 package Seeds of Change Quinoa Brown and Red Rice - Brown and Red Rice
  • 1 cup chopped kale leaves
  • 1 cup shredded Parmigiano-Reggiano

Instructions

  • Begin by preheating your oven to 400 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil and set aside.
  • Slice the tops off the mini pumpkins and scoop out the seeds. Rub the pumpkins and tops with olive oil and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Place the pumpkins (with their tops on) on the prepared baking sheet. Roast for 15-20 minutes or until the pumpkins are just tender.
  • Meanwhile, add a tablespoon of olive oil to a medium skillet on medium-high heat. Add the sausage and cook it well. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Drain off the grease and set the sausage aside.
  • In the same pan, add the onions and mushrooms. Cook until tender. Add the apple cider to the pan. Deglaze the pan by scraping the bottom with a wood spoon. Then add the pecans, nutmeg, and thyme. Cook until the liquid is slightly reduced (4-5 minutes). Remove from heat and set aside.
  • Microwave the Seeds of Change Quinoa, Brown and Red Rice according to the package directions.
  • In a large bowl, combine the sausage, onion, mushrooms, dried cranberries, rice, kale, and 3/4 cup of Parmigiano-Reggiano.
  • Transfer the pumpkin bottoms to a large cast-iron pan. Set the tops aside.
  • Stuff the pumpkins with the sausage, rice, and cranberry mixture. Heap the mixture on top of each pumpkin. Sprinkle with the remaining Parmigiano-Reggiano.
  • Reduce the oven temperature to 350 degrees F. Bake for 15-20 minutes or until the pumpkins are soft and the stuffing is heated through.
  • Serve hot and place the pumpkin tops* back on the pumpkins.

Notes

*The tops can be warmed up on the same baking sheet by placing them in the oven for a few minutes before serving. They are mostly decorative.

A traditional Hot Toddy recipe gets a flavor upgrade inspired by classic apple pie. Seasoned with fresh apples and cinnamon, this Apple Cinnamon Hot Toddy recipe is a tasty fall cocktail.

Apple Cinnamon Hot Toddy | inspiredbycharm.com

Apply Cinnamon Hot Toddy:

There’s nothing better than a warm beverage on a cool day. During the fall and winter, one of my new favorites is a delicious hot toddy recipe!

With cooler temperatures rolling in, I thought I’d amp up my warm beverage options and give a hot toddy a try.

Typically, I’m not a fan of bourbon or any kind of whiskey, although, between you and me, I wish I was. When I see people sipping a glass of bourbon on TV or in a movie, I think they look so sophisticated and commanding.

Anyway, I have tried a few drinks made with bourbon, and I do enjoy them a bit more than just drinking it straight up. So, inspired by my need for something warm and my desire to acquire a taste for bourbon, I created an Apple Cinnamon Hot Toddy.

How to Make a Hot Toddy:

Apple Cinnamon Hot Toddy | inspiredbycharm.com

Apple Cinnamon Hot Toddy | inspiredbycharm.com

Mixed with cinnamon, maple syrup (Finding Home Farms, of course), and black tea, bourbon takes on a whole new life. And you know what, I love it!

In all honesty, this toddy is quite delicious and perfect for cooler weather. Plus, rumor has it that hot toddies are a great cure for a cold. Sick days just got a whole lot better.

Apple Cinnamon Hot Toddy | inspiredbycharm.com

What’s the best liquor for a Hot Toddy?

I prefer bourbon as my base hot toddy liquor. However, feel free to use what you love. Rum, brandy, or whiskey could all be excellent options. Use what you like best!

And for those of you who don’t imbibe, you can just substitute fresh apple cider for the bourbon. Yum!

This Chocolate Skull Cake just might be the perfect halloween dessert recipe. Spooky and delicious. Who could ask for more?

Last week I was so thrilled to share my haunted Halloween table with you. You may have noticed the centerpiece: a very eerie but totally delicious Chocolate Skull Cake. Today I want to show you how to make that Skull Cake. Let’s get going.

Chocolate Skull Cake | inspiredbycharm.com

As I mentioned, the idea for this cake came from a skull cake pan I found at HomeGoods. As soon as I spotted it, I knew it would be the crowning jewel in my tablescape.

In case all of the skull cake pans have already disappeared from your local HomeGoods, you can buy the same pan via Amazon.

Oh, and if you need some beautiful recipe cards to jot down the recipe, you can get my free printable Halloween Recipe Cards here.

Chocolate Skull Cake | inspiredbycharm.com

How to make a Chocolate Skull Cake:

I knew I wanted a chocolate cake with some sort of dripping chocolate glaze. I got this Chocolate Sour Cream Bundt Cake recipe from Two Peas and Their Pod and made a few changes for this application. Maria is an amazing cook and baker, so I knew that any recipe she shared would be delicious.

Chocolate Skull Cake | inspiredbycharm.com

After whipping up the cake batter, I filled my skull cake pan. If you purchase the same pan, you’ll notice that in the directions that come with it, you are told to only fill the pan about three-quarters of the way full. However, since this recipe doesn’t rise very much, you’ll want the pan to be about 90% full.

Chocolate Skull Cake | inspiredbycharm.com

My goal when baking this cake was to get it to rise to at least the top of the pan so that when I put the two halves together, everything would line up nicely. I’m happy to report that it worked.

Since the cakes did slightly dome, I used a sharp serrated knife to level them off so I had flat surfaces to sandwich together.

To hold the two cakes together, I used some of the chocolate glaze mixed with a little powdered sugar to make a thicker frosting to act as glue.

Chocolate Skull Cake | inspiredbycharm.com

Once the two pieces were sandwiched, I used more of the frosting to patch the seam. I also added some extra frosting randomly around the cake, so that the seam didn’t seem so obvious or out of place.

Chocolate Skull Cake | inspiredbycharm.com

After allowing the cake to cool in the refrigerator, I “painted” the cake with a mixture of powdered sugar and milk. I opted to do this to give the cake a white appearance. I felt that a thick frosting or lots of chocolate glaze drizzle would hide the important details of the skull.

Chocolate Skull Cake | inspiredbycharm.com

To incorporate the delicious chocolate glaze, I dribbled some on top of the skull and from the mouth, eyes, and nose.

Chocolate Skull Cake | inspiredbycharm.com

I recommend placing the extra glaze in a dish and serving it with the cake. That way your guests can spoon more of it on their individual slice if they wish.

Chocolate Skull Cake | inspiredbycharm.com

And that’s it. The resulting cake is not only moist, chocolatey, and delicious, but it’s a dessert befitting the season. While it does take a few extra steps to bring this to life, I think everyone will agree it’s worth the effort and time.

Oh, and if you like this skull cake recipe, you’ll really dig my chocolate tombstones snack cakes. You can see those here.

This Chocolate Skull Cake just might be the perfect halloween dessert recipe. Spooky and delicious. Who could ask for more?

Ingredients

Chocolate Glaze:
Powdered Sugar Glaze:

Instructions

  • Begin by preheating your oven to 350 degrees F. Butter and flour your skull cake pan and set aside.
  • In a small sauce pan, heat the butter, cocoa powder, salt, and water over medium heat. Cook and stir just until melted and evenly combined. Remove from heat and set aside.
  • In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, and baking soda to combine. Add half of the melted butter mixture and whisk until blended. The mixture will be thick. Add the remaining butter mixture and whisk to combine. Add the eggs, one at a time, whisking in between until completely blended. Finally, mix in the sour cream and vanilla until smooth.
  • Add the batter to the prepared pan, filling each side to about 90% full. (You may have a little extra batter.) Bake until a wood skewer inserted near the center comes out clean (45 to 50 minutes). Let the cake cool completely in the pan.
  • While the cake cools, prepare the chocolate glaze. To a large bowl, add the chocolate and corn syrup. Set aside. In a small sauce pan, combine the heavy cream and granulated sugar. Stir over medium heat until the cream is hot and the sugar is dissolved. Pour the hot cream over the chocolate and whisk until smooth.
  • In a small bowl, whisk together 1 cup of the prepared chocolate glaze with 1/2 cup confectioners' sugar until combined.
  • In another bowl, prepare the powdered sugar glaze by whisking together the confectioners' sugar, milk, and vanilla until smooth. For a thinner glaze, use additional milk.
  • Once the cake is cooled, trim off any cake that has domed above the top of the pan with a serrated knife to create a flat surface on each piece of cake. Use the chocolate glaze mixed with the confectioners sugar to sandwich the two cake halves together. Fill in any cracks with extra glaze. Refrigerate for about 30 minutes.
  • Place the cake on a baking rack that's on top of a baking sheet. Use a pasty brush to apply the powdered sugar glaze. Allow any excess glaze to drip off onto the baking sheet.
  • Move the cake to a cake stand or serving platter. Drizzle with some of the chocolate glaze. Serve the cake with any additional chocolate glaze in a bowl on the side.

It’s Halloween on Inspired by Charm. Today I’m showing you around my eerie but elegant dining room while also sharing some Haunted Halloween Table Decor Ideas. Let the ghoulishness begin.

It’s a thrill for me to join the other bloggers on The White Buffalo Styling Co.’s Halloween Home Tour. The tour kicked off yesterday. You can click here if you’d like to start at the beginning. If you’re coming over from withHeart, welcome! I’m frightfully excited to have you. Jennifer did such a beautiful job decorating her home for the season. I especially love that mantel garland.

Haunted Halloween Table Decor Ideas:

While I love to decorate my home for autumn (as you’ve seen in my two fall home tours here and here), I don’t usually go all out for Halloween. However, I do think it’s a fun excuse to dabble in the macabre and mysterious side of decorating. So when Lindsay invited me to join this tour, I knew it was a great opportunity to conjure up a few ideas for my dining room.

Creative, Spooky, and Chic Halloween Decorations:

As I do when planning most designs, I first thought about color. I decided on black and white with a mix of metallics.

With my color scheme in mind, I searched around my home for things I already had in order to not spend a ton of money to switch up this space. Let’s see if you can spot some familiar accessories.

I did buy a few things at Walmart. The table runner is sheer white fabric from the Halloween section. To make the fabric look a bit more creepy, I used scissors to create holes and tears.

For my plates, I stuck with basic white. With lots of spooky accessories planned, I thought white would be a ghostly neutral background. I had the gray napkins on hand and just topped them with gold flatware*.

I finished off each place setting with a metal spider designed to hold a mini pumpkin. (I used to sell the spider holders in my gift shop. I’m glad I hung on to a few.)

I also found these bling bat stickers* that I applied to my wine glasses. For a couple dollars, they were a frightfully good deal. At the end of the evening, they peeled right off.

Halloween Decorations: Flowers

Since every table needs flowers, I ordered this bouquet from The Bouqs. I tried to find something bootiful. These protea and spiky greens were perfect.

The glass candlesticks were also left over from my gift shop. Adorned with black tapers, they instantly made my table look spooky. There’s something about tall candlesticks with black candles that screams Halloween.

To finish off my creepy tablescape, I tucked in ceramic and brass pumpkins and scattered around small plastic snakes and spiders. The white ceramic pumpkins are from Grandin Road and the brass pumpkins* are from West Elm.

I found a skull cake pan at HomeGoods last week (You can also get one here on Amazon*.) and knew I had to add this cake to my Halloween table.

Coated in a white glaze and dripping with chocolate ganache, the skull cake is the perfect centerpiece.

I bet you never thought “dead” could also be delicious. Get the recipe here.

To tie the entire space together, I added a few ghoulish touches to the rest of the room.

I turned my dining room shelves into a mini bar with my DIY “I’m here for the boos” ice bucket as the centerpiece. (You can learn how I made that here.) Those black pumpkins* are from West Elm.

I also whipped up gold spider drink stirrers. To create them, I simply painted plastic spiders gold which I then hot glued to plastic stir sticks. It was a super simple project that adds great detail. (Remember when I made similar stirrers for the Kentucky Derby?)

To switch up my artwork, I just printed out this dancing skeleton graphic I found after a quick google search.

Over on my actual bar cart, I swapped out the booze for candy.

I got this beautiful and delicious chocolate from See’s Candies. I’m ready for any trick or treaters who stop by. (I also encouraged my guests to take a handful of chocolates with them to remember the evening.)

To complete the eerie look of my dining room, I added more tattered fabric to the head chairs at my table and hung a glitter skeleton from the door that leads to my side porch.

Have you ever taken on a project that looks amazing when you visualize it in your head, but has you wondering if it’s going to look fabulous or just totally junky?

This DIY Halloween Paint Can Decor was one of those projects. Thankfully, it turned out well. In fact, the bold and graphic style of Halloween decor is even better than I imagined.

DIY Halloween Paint Can Decor

DIY Halloween Paint Can Decor | inspiredbycharm.com

My friends over at Lowe’s Home Improvement challenged me to come up with a fun Halloween DIY project. Instead of simply using the beautiful seasonal decor they sell in store and online, I opted to put on my creative hat and make something unique.

I shopped the store last Saturday and settled on the idea of transforming paint cans into candle containers that I could use for entertaining. My mom then spotted some black and orange glitter spray paint, and my idea came to life. With vinyl letters, a Dremel, and a few other items, I was ready to get crafty and give plain paint cans a haunting new life.

And that I did.

On one large paint can (Yes, you can buy empty paint cans in gallon or quart sizes at Lowe’s.), I spelled out a classic Halloween pun, “I’m here for the boos.” (Get it? Here for the booze.) I thought this can could pull double duty as an ice bucket, wine storage, or even a cute gift.

DIY Halloween Paint Can Decor | inspiredbycharm.com

My sister-in-law mentioned that she and my brother “booze” (instead of boos) their adult neighbors and thought the can would make a great gift container for something like that.

DIY Halloween Paint Can Decor | inspiredbycharm.com

However, in my dining room, it looks super seasonal all styled up to create a little drink station for entertaining.

While it’s hard to see in the photos, the sparkle spray paint adds texture and just a touch of glamour to the can.

You might also have noticed another paint can on my drink station.

DIY Halloween Paint Can Decor | inspiredbycharm.com

Here, a quart paint can serves as a tealight holder. Using my Dremel rotary tool, I punched holes in the can to create the eerie design. (I found the spider web image online.) When the tealight is lit, the spider web comes to life, adding a lovely glow and twinkle.

Crazy cute, right?

And because those two designs weren’t enough, I went ahead and created two more Halloween paint cans.

To go along with the DIY Tag Banner in my living room, this can reads, “Trick or Treat Yo’self.”

DIY Halloween Paint Can Decor | inspiredbycharm.com

This can would be ideal for storing candy for trick or treaters or hiding your personal See’s Candies stash. I don’t judge.

DIY Halloween Paint Can Decor | inspiredbycharm.com

Again, that orange sparkle paint brought the can to life.

Because I needed a coordinating candle, I decided to add a pumpkin to the other quart can.

DIY Halloween Paint Can Decor | inspiredbycharm.com

Adorable.

DIY Halloween Paint Can Decor | inspiredbycharm.com

Also, for the record, I’ve fallen in love with my Dremel rotary tool. After seeing my blogger friend and makeover-genius, Monica use one on The Weekender (A DIY Makeover web series from Lowe’s), I knew I had to break mine out and try it for myself.

Okay, so now that I’ve teased you with my fabulous DIY Halloween Paint Can Decor, let me tell you how to create your own!

How to: DIY Halloween Paint Can Decor

DIY Halloween Paint Can Decor | inspiredbycharm.com

Here’s what will will need:

Empty paint cans
Spray paint (I used black and fire orange from Rust-Oleum.)
Glitter spray paint (in black and orange)
Vinyl alphabet stickers
Dremel rotary tool and bits
Printed Halloween graphics
Craft knife
Scissors
Tape

Let’s start with the lettered gallon paint cans.

First, you’ll want to pick up some vinyl letters. I found these (near the poster board) at Walmart. These vinyl letters aren’t overly sticky so you’ll be able to easily remove them after you’ve painted your cans.

DIY Halloween Paint Can Decor | inspiredbycharm.com

Next, apply the letters to the paint can, spelling out whatever you want it to say.

After the letters are applied, spray paint your can. I placed the can upside down on a cardboard box in my yard. That way, no paint got on the inside or the rim of the can. Apply 2 or 3 thin coats of  spray paint until the can is completely covered; allow each coat to thoroughly dry.

Once the can is completely covered in paint, follow up with 2 or 3 coats of the glitter paint. When using the glitter paint, be sure to have at least 2-3 feet of space between the can and the spray paint. Apply thin coats for the best results.

DIY Halloween Paint Can Decor | inspiredbycharm.com

After the can has completely dried, used a craft knife to peel off the letters. Fill your can with wine or candy, and you’re done.

Now, let’s make those quart-sized punched candle holders.

Start by finding a Halloween graphic online. In Google images, I searched for “Halloween outline.”

DIY Halloween Paint Can Decor | inspiredbycharm.com

Print out the graphic on a piece of paper. Trim the paper as needed so that it fits on the paint can. Tape the paper to the paint can, making sure the graphic is where you want it.

The paper with the graphic serves two purposes. First, it gives you a pattern to follow for making your design. Secondly, it gives the Dremel a matte surface for puncturing. (I tried using the Dremel on the paint can without a paper guide, and the bit tended to slip on the surface of the can.)

DIY Halloween Paint Can Decor | inspiredbycharm.com

With your design on the paint can, use your Dremel to puncture holes along the lines of the design. For this project, I used the bit that looks like a threaded cone.

(If you don’t have a Dremel, you could use a hammer and sharp nail to create your design.)

Once you’re happy with your design, remove the paper template. Now your can is ready to be painted.

DIY Halloween Paint Can Decor | inspiredbycharm.com

Again, I placed the can upside down on a cardboard box in my yard. That way, no paint could get inside or on the rim of the can. First, apply 2 or 3 thin coats of  spray paint until the can is completely covered. Make sure the paint dries thoroughly between coats.

Once the can is nicely painted, apply 2 or 3 thin coats of the glitter paint. As I indicated earlier, when using the glitter paint, be sure there is a 2-3 feet space between the can and the spray paint. Apply thin coats for best results.

DIY Halloween Paint Can Decor | inspiredbycharm.com

Allow the can to dry completely. Use a tea light to illuminate your design.

That’s it!

As you can see, this project is simple, but it creates bold and beautiful results. If you can spray paint, you can do this.

DIY Halloween Paint Can Decor | inspiredbycharm.com

DIY Halloween Paint Can Decor | inspiredbycharm.com

As I mentioned above, you don’t necessarily need a Dremel to complete this project. However, it’s a fun tool to have, and I’m excited to see what other projects I can create with it.

DIY Halloween Paint Can Decor | inspiredbycharm.com

For now, I’m just loving my DIY Halloween Paint Can Decor.

Join me back here on Friday when I’ll be joining some fellow bloggers for a mini-Halloween home tour. You’ll get to see the rest of my dining room decorated for an All Hallows’ Eve celebration.

Since we’re almost halfway through October (and it’s been a while since the last Tuesday Tunes), I thought some new grooves were in order.

A couple weekends ago I was in Asheville, NC for the wedding of my stepsister. A local bluegrass band played at the wedding. (One of the band members is a friend of the newlyweds.) While bluegrass music is not a traditional choice for nuptials, it was the perfect touch for my stepsister’s outdoor wedding which happened to be on a farm.

Tuesday Tunes 13 - Autumn Acoustic | inspiredbycharm.com

I am aware that not everyone is a fan of bluegrass or country, but somehow that style of music always makes me feel at home. Along with that, there’s something about this time of year that makes me gravitate toward the simpler things in life so I’m calling this week’s playlist, Autumn Acoustic. It’s a mix of acoustic favorites, bluegrass covers, and folky fall jams.

Whether you’re picking apples, enjoying a hayride, getting cozy next to a campfire, leaf peeping through the Northeast, or sipping apple pie sangria on the porch, this playlist is perfect for any fall activity.

The Classic White Russian Cocktails get a contemporary and delicious upgrade with one of the most popular flavors of the season: salted caramel. These Salted Caramel White Russians are the perfect cocktail for fall and the upcoming holiday season.

Salted Caramel White Russian cocktiail receipe | inspiredbycharm.com

Salted Caramel White Russian:

Several years back my oldest brother unknowingly started a new Thanksgiving tradition. He invited me to join him and his wife for a White Russian on Thanksgiving morning to watch the parade on TV.

As the years have passed, more family members have joined us and we now have snacks (of course!) to accompany the fun. In fact, this gathering has become one of my favorite new traditions. (I realize that some people might question kicking off a long day of drinking and eating with White Russians, but somehow we make it work.)

Salted Caramel White Russian cocktail recipe | inspiredbycharm.com

When I was at the liquor store a couple weeks ago (to get supplies for my Apple Pie Sangria), I noticed that Bailey’s has come out with a Salted Caramel Kahlua. Having a bottle of Salted Caramel Vodka already in my hand, I knew what I had to make: Salted Caramel White Russians.

Salted Caramel White Russians | inspiredbycharm.com

Salted Caramel White Russians | inspiredbycharm.com

Salted Caramel White Russians | inspiredbycharm.com

What is a White Russian cocktail?

In case you’ve never tasted a White Russian, it’s similar to a Kahula and Cream (which is essentially just Kahula and Half & Half) plus vodka. The resulting cocktail is like a thin chocolaty milkshake with vodka. Personally, I’m a big fan.

Salted Caramel White Russians | inspiredbycharm.com

How to make a Salted Caramel White Russian:

By simply replacing classic Kahlua and regular vodka with the salted caramel varieties, a completely new drink was born. With the increasing popularity of salted caramel, especially at this time of year, it couldn’t be more appropriate.

For a final touch (since every cocktail needs a beautiful garnish), I dripped caramel inside the glass before pouring in the drink. As Ina Garten taught me, it’s important that what you’re going to eat (or in this case drink) looks like what’s inside.

Salted Caramel White Russians | inspiredbycharm.com

With streaks of caramel running down the side of the glass, there’s no question what this cocktail is going to taste like. Let me show you how simple it is to make.

If you liked this cocktail recipe, I think you’ll love these too:

It’s really that simple.

I should also mention the measurements listed above are the classic recipe. Feel free to use more cream, less vodka, more Kahlua, etc – to find the perfect balance of flavors for you.

Just when I thought I’d wrapped up all of the details from my entertaining-inspired home tour, I realized there was one thing I’d forgotten: these Beautiful DIY Stamped Napkins for Chic Entertaining! I’m excited to show you how to make them!

DIY Stamped Napkins

Beautiful DIY Stamped Napkins for Chic Entertaining | inspiredbycharm.com

In case you’re not sure what I’m talking about, here’s a quick rewind. Several weeks ago I hosted a tour of my home dressed for fall with an entertaining twist. Over the past couple weeks I’ve been diving deeper into that post by sharing the recipes and DIY projects that were featured. These included Baked Pumpkin Donuts, Cream Cheese Caramel Apple Spread, Apple Pie Sangria, and Fall Harvest Pasta Salad. I even provided a more expansive tour so you could see other areas of my home.

Beautiful DIY Stamped Napkins for Chic Entertaining | inspiredbycharm.com

Now, I’m going to show you how to make these DIY stamped napkins!

( like creating my own napkins because it also allows me to tie an entire table together. Some times it’s hard to find just the right thing to fit your design. However, if you make an item yourself, you can easily customize it to achieve the look you want.

I started with these bold, marigold napkins from HomeGoods, but any cotton napkin will do. I decided to adorn them with falling leaves in varying shades of green to give a nod to fall and tie in the flowers on the table and the green cabinet in my dining room. When the project was complete, I had one-of-a-kind napkins to match my space.

Let me show you how to make them.

DIY Stamped Napkins Tutorial:

For this project, you will need:

  • Cotton napkins
  • Stamps
  • Pigment ink stamp pads
  • Iron
  • Scrap piece of fabric

img_9978

Begin by ironing your napkins. When stamping, it’s best to have a smooth surface.

If you have an extra napkin or scrap of fabric, I recommend practicing on it. Get a feel for how the stamps work on the fabric and how your colored ink looks on the fabric.

After that, you’re ready to stamp. Load your stamp with ink and press firmly onto the fabric. (For this project, you’ll want pigment stamp pads since these work best on fabric.)

img_9986

After you stamp once, you’ll need to load more ink before stamping again.

img_9987

Continuing stamp until you’re happy with the completed design. Because of the way I was folding my napkins, I opted to stamp my leaves across the entire bottom of the napkin. The fun part is, you can choose whatever design, pattern, and location that works best for you.

Allow the ink to dry for at least thirty minutes. In order to be able to launder the napkins, you’ll need to set the ink. To do this, place a piece of scrap fabric over the design and iron on high.

img_0001

With that, your DIY Stamped Napkins are complete, and the table is ready to set.

DIY Stamped Napkin | inspiredbycharm.com

As you can imagine, given the variety of stamps and ink colors available, your design options are almost limitless. No matter what the season or celebration, you’ll have the perfect napkin for your tablescape.

Some of you have already figured out the process after seeing my DIY Stamped Snack Bags tutorial, but I thought detailing everything in one post might be helpful.

Beautiful DIY Stamped Napkins for Chic Entertaining | inspiredbycharm.com

Also, a number of folks were asking about the stamps I used for both of these projects. The letter stamps came from Michael’s. I found the unique / modern stamps via Etsy.

Beautiful DIY Stamped Napkins for Chic Entertaining | inspiredbycharm.com

Talk to the Sun on Etsy has a beautiful selection of graphic and modern stamps. That’s where I purchased those awesome leaves. She offers hundreds of stamps that she has cut individually by hand, and she will do custom work.

Beautiful DIY Stamped Napkins for Chic Entertaining | inspiredbycharm.com

In fact, I recently commissioned her to make an IBC logo stamp. It’s perfection. I’ve been using it on letters and envelopes. I even made a couple IBC napkins.

She is based outside the United States so it does take a little longer for shipping, but it’s totally worth it. I also picked up a set of these pumpkins. I couldn’t resist.

My autumn DIY brain is working overtime. Today, I’m so excited to share another entertaining-inspired craft with you. We’re making some Fall Colorblock Cork Table Decor!

Fall Colorblock Cork Table Decor | inspiredbycharm.com

Fall Colorblock Cork Table Decor:

In essence, what I’ve created here is a colorful leaf-inspired tablescape. Colorblock leaves cut out of cork in various shapes and sizes line the center of my table and serve as a runner, trivets, and coasters. It looks pretty darn chic. My Staub Cast-Iron Pumpkin Cocoette looks pretty cozy on there. Don’t you think?

Fall Colorblock Cork Table Decor | inspiredbycharm.com

Inspiration for this Fall Colorblock Cork Table Decor came from several places. Over the past couple years, I’ve seen these large leaves cut out of cork in a few of my favorite magazines. I’ve always loved the idea, but wanted to give it an IBC twist. When my friends over at Fusion Mineral Paint recently sent me some of their new fall colors to try, this idea hit me like a ton of bricks. Now, I fully admit that painting cork isn’t genius or anything, but as you can clearly see, it totally changes the look of cork leaves.

What I love most about this entire tablescape is that it ties in all of the things I love. The style is a fun mix of modern and traditional with a nod to mid-century. Plus, (as I’m sure you expected) there’s a touch of gold, so it pure magic. Throw in a couple pumpkins for good measure, and we have a winner.

Now, I’m not only going to show you my table, I’m also going to teach how how to make these multipurpose colorful cork leaves.

Fall Colorblock Cork Table Decor | inspiredbycharm.com

How to Make Fall Colorblock Cork Table Decor:

Here’s what you will need:

Leaf printables (see below for links)
Scissors
12×12″ cork squares
Felt-tip marker
Craft knife (I like the X-Acto brand.)
Painter’s tape
Paint (I recommend Fusion Mineral Paint.)
Paint Brush

To get started, you’ll need to print the leaf printables I made for you. I have them in two sizes. Because the cork sheets are 12×12″, I wanted to make my leaves as big as possible. However, typical printers only print letter size which is 8×11″. However, I happen to have a printer that prints 13×19“. Assuming that most people don’t, I went ahead and provided two printables. One is for a standard printer, and the other is for a large-format printer.

Fall Colorblock Cork Table Decor | inspiredbycharm.com

If you want larger leaves, there’s no need to go out and buy a fancy printer. You can use the standard printables as a guide and just trace the leaves bigger or pay a local copy shop to print the larger pages.

Also, for the coasters, I reduced the size of the leaf images before printing them.

Leaf Printables:
Standard 8×11: White Oak / Maple / Birch / Red Oak
Large Format 13X19: White Oak / Maple / Birch / Red Oak

Once you have your printables, cut them out with a pair of scissors. Then, using a marker, trace the leaf shape onto the rougher side of the cork. You’ll want the smoother side of the cork to be on top.

Fall Colorblock Cork Table Decor | inspiredbycharm.com

Fall Colorblock Cork Table Decor | inspiredbycharm.com

Using a sharp craft knife, cut out the leaf. Please use the knife with caution. Work on a self-healing mat or surface you don’t mind damaging since the knife will cut through the cork and whatever is below it. (I tried using scissors, and although you can make it work, it does leave rough edges.)

Fall Colorblock Cork Table Decor | inspiredbycharm.com

Fall Colorblock Cork Table Decor | inspiredbycharm.com

Once your leaves are cut, use painters tap to mark off which area you’re going to paint.

Fall Colorblock Cork Table Decor | inspiredbycharm.com

Fall Colorblock Cork Table Decor | inspiredbycharm.com

Then you’re ready to paint. I used an inexpensive sponge brush and applied just one coat. For the larger leaves, I used the following Fusion Mineral Paint colors: Tuscan Orange, Upper Canada, Little Lamb, and Midnight Blue.

Fall Colorblock Cork Table Decor | inspiredbycharm.com

For the coasters, I used the Pale Gold and Deep Gold from the metallic series.

Once you have the coverage you like, remove the tape and allow the paint to dry completely.

Fall Colorblock Cork Table Decor | inspiredbycharm.com

With that, your leaves are complete.

Fall Colorblock Cork Table Decor | inspiredbycharm.com

To set the table, I simply lined the leaves down the middle. There’s no one way to style them, however, it seems works best when you have all the stems pointing towards the center. It keeps it casual, but still gives a sense of order.

And even though most folks don’t use coasters at a table setting, I liked the variety brought in by the smaller leaves. Plus, I wanted an excuse to try out Fusion’s metallic paints.

Of course, you can use whatever colors you like or ones that work with your home decor.

Fall Colorblock Cork Table Decor | inspiredbycharm.com

What I also love about these painted cork leaves is that their use isn’t limited to a table runner, trivet, or coaster. Try using them as a place mat or a festive way to dress up a side table. I think they could even work as wall decor. You’re only limited by your creativity.

It’s hard to believe it’s been two weeks since my Fall Home Tour. You may remember that one of my fall decorations was this banner that I hung on my fireplace. Today I want to show you how I made it. In fact, I’m going to share three variations so you can create the perfect DIY Tag Banner for your home.

DIY Tag Banners | inspiredbycharm.com

So how did this all come about? I had seen this style of banner for sale at stores, but unfortunately either the saying or colors didn’t suit my style. That inspired me to create my own. The best part about this project is that it’s completely customizable. – You choose the colors and word or phrase to make a banner that’s uniquely suited to your space or a particular event, holiday, or season.

DIY Tag Banners | inspiredbycharm.com

For my Fall Home Tour mantel, I made a traditional-looking banner. Using these orange hang tags I found online, I just added gold sticker letters (from Walmart) to spell out, “Happy Fall Y’all.”

DIY Tag Banner | inspiredbycharm.com

Although I love my fall mantelscape, the banner adds a splash of color to this part of the room that helps tie in the rest of the space.

Over in my dining room is a smaller banner that I made.

DIY Tag Banners | inspiredbycharm.com

Drawing on the copper and rose gold accents I used to decorate this room, I put rose gold sticker letters on black hang tags (both from Michael’s) to spell out “Harvest.” I plan to use this banner from now through Thanksgiving.

DIY Tag Banners | inspiredbycharm.com

DIY Tag Banners | inspiredbycharm.com

As you can see, the process for creating the banners is very simple. What makes this even more fun is that I just used mini clothespins to hang each letter tag on a piece of twine. So, if desired, you could include a banner in your décor year round. Swapping out the letters for each season or special celebration would be super quick.

DIY Tag Banner | inspiredbycharm.com

To give you an example of this, I decided to change my living room banner to something a bit more clever for Halloween.

DIY Tag Banner | inspiredbycharm.com

Inspired by one of my all-time favorite shows, Parks and Recreation, I opted for “Trick or Treat Yo’self.” It’s a modern and fun nod to All Hallows’ Eve.

DIY Tag Banner | inspiredbycharm.com

DIY Tag Banner | inspiredbycharm.com

I used the same orange tags, but this time I went with black letters – the traditional colors of Halloween.

To portray the “trick” part of the expression, I tucked in a few black glitter spiders.

DIY Tag Banner | inspiredbycharm.com

Then, I displayed an assortment of chocolatey goodies on my coffee table to represent the “treat.”

DIY Tag Banner | inspiredbycharm.com

DIY Tag Banner | inspiredbycharm.com

While most of the décor remained the same, my space took on a whole new vibe with just a couple simple, but important changes.

DIY Tag Banner | inspiredbycharm.com

I don’t know about you, but I’m loving it. (Well, at least until I’m surrounded by regret and candy wrappers.)

Now, I know you probably don’t need a full tutorial on crafting these banners, but let me share a supply list and some tips with the step-by-step directions.

For this project, you will need:
Large hang tags
Alphabet stickers
Twine
Mini clothespins
Ruler, optional

First, purchase hang tags and alphabet stickers. I found my supplies at Walmart, Michael’s, and Amazon. When you’re making your selections, pay attention to the sizes so that the letters will fit the tags, and the finished banner will be the right size for the space where you plan to hang it.

DIY Tag Banners | inspiredbycharm.com

Next, figure out what you’d like your banner to say. Feel free to use my ideas or come up with your own. Even something as simple as “Happy Halloween” would be perfect! If you have extra tags and letters, you could also spell out “Thanksgiving” and swap out the tags after October 31.

DIY Tag Banners | inspiredbycharm.com

Now add your letters to the tags. I just eyeballed the letters, but you might want to use a ruler for exact placement.

Once your lettered tags are ready, attach the ends of a length of twine where you want to hang the banner. Pushpins work great for this.

DIY Tag Banners | inspiredbycharm.com

Then, use mini clothespins to clip the letters to the twine. I find it easiest to start in the middle with the middle letter and work out from there.

And that’s it. Custom and seasonal decor in no time.

DIY Tag Banners | inspiredbycharm.com

Aren’t these banners cute?

Have fun with whatever colors, letters, twine, and clips you decide to use. The options are practically endless. I came up with my three three ideas in no time. I’m sure you can top them with your own creativity.

I hope you enjoyed this simple-to-make home decoration. If you decide to recreate this look for your own home, please share it on Instagram with the hashtag #myIBC and tag @inspiredbycharm. I can’t wait to see your designs.

Loaded with all the seasonal fall flavors you love, this pumpkin spice coffee creamer can be made at home with this easy recipe.

If you know me, or follow my blog, then you know I’m a self-proclaimed pumpkin addict. Usually, I consume so much of it that by November or December I’m more than ready for the now-famous pumpkin spice season to be over.

Homemade Pumpkin Spice Coffee Creamer:

Coffee is my go-to first thing each morning. Yes, I’m one of those people who find it challenging to function without a cup of joe to start the day. I take my coffee with cream and just a touch of sweetness. During the fall, I also like a little pumpkin spice. I’m familiar with the pre-made pumpkin-flavored coffee creamers on the market, but since I prefer natural ingredients I decided to make my own.

Homemade Pumpkin Spice Coffee Creamer | inspiredbycharm.com

As you know, I’ve been super fortunate to work with HomeGoods for most of this year. Twice a month I share ideas, projects, or recipes on their Design Happy blog. (You can find all of my posts here.) It’s an exciting space where I get to hang out with a great group of bloggers. Plus, it gives me another reason to shop at HomeGoods, and I’ll take any excuse to shop, right?

For my most recent post, I decided to make Homemade Pumpkin Spice Coffee Creamer. Those of you who know me well know that one of my favorite things about fall is the chance to eat everything and anything that’s pumpkin flavored. That includes pumpkin donuts, pumpkin cinnamon rolls, a pumpkin pie martini, and even pumpkin mac and cheese!

Of course, if there was a way for me to include pumpkin in the first hours of my day, I’d be on board immediately. Well, there is: Homemade Pumpkin Spice Coffee Creamer.

Homemade Pumpkin Spice Coffee Creamer | inspiredbycharm.com

Recently, I’ve become a big fan of the natural-type of coffee creamers. My favorite is Vanilla Natural Bliss from Coffee-mate. These creamers only use natural ingredients like milk, cream, and sugar rather than all of the weird stuff that goes into traditional store-bought coffee creamers. Unfortunately, these natural creamers aren’t available in seasonal flavors. Whomp. Whomp.

How to Make Pumpkin Spice Coffee Creamer:

While making your own coffee creamer might sound like a daunting task, it’s actually quite simple.

In a saucepan, start with a base of half and half. Then, add pumpkin puree, pumpkin pie spice, vanilla, maple syrup, and brown sugar for sweetness.

Homemade Pumpkin Spice Coffee Creamer | inspiredbycharm.com

Simply heat the mixture until all of the ingredients are combined. That’s it. Your delicious Pumpkin Spice Coffee Creamer is ready to go.

You can use it immediately or refrigerate it in a sealed container for up to five days.

Whether you want to just kick off your day with a taste of the season or you’re entertaining and want to impress your guests, this recipe is a winner.

Homemade Pumpkin Spice Coffee Creamer | inspiredbycharm.com

However, before you leave, I have one other quick recommendation. If you’re a fan of flavored coffee and happen to be in HomeGoods (or T.J. Maxx), keep your eye out for this Fall in Love Ground Coffee in Vanilla Nut Cream flavor.

I think it’s only $6 a bag, and it’s so seasonally delicious. Plus, it makes you’re house smell amazing. Just an extra little tip for my fellow coffee lovers.

Homemade Pumpkin Spice Coffee Creamer | inspiredbycharm.com

I love it so much that I’m hoarding 12 bags in hopes that amount will get me through the winter. Fingers crossed.

Loaded with all the seasonal fall flavors you love, pumpkin spice coffee creamer can be made at home with this easy recipe.

Instructions

  • Put all of the ingredients in a saucepan.
  • While whisking frequently, bring to a light simmer over medium heat. Gently warm the ingredients to combine (about one minute). Do not boil.
  • Use the creamer immediately or transfer it to a heatproof container and refrigerate* for up to five days.

Notes

*If chilled, shake or stir before use as some of the spices will settle to the bottom of the container.

Sometimes the simplest projects can have the biggest impact. Inspired by the brilliant combinations in Curate Snack bars,  stamps and colorful ink come together to give life and personality to otherwise boring canvas bags. Today on IBC, I’m showing you how I made these DIY Stamped Snack Bags.

DIY Stamped Snack Bags | inspiredbycharm.com

In my family (as in most families in my hometown), food and snacks are an important way of showing love and reaching out. At any event, no matter how big or small, there will be food. If someone passes away. you take the family a dish. If a new neighbor moves in, you bake them cookies. “What can I bring?” is a common phrase around these parts.

Food is also an essential part of road trips. When my mom and I went to NYC, she packed a goody bag with homemade energy bites, apples, and water. When she and her husband went on a trip to celebrate their 20th wedding anniversary, I gave them a big backpack of snacks. You get the idea.

Home or away, it always nice to have some snacks handy, and this got me thinking. Why not create unique and beautiful ways to carry and share those snacks? As many of you know, for the past few months, I’ve been working with Curate Snack bars. If you’re new to IBC or haven’t heard of Curate yet, it’s a line of delicious bars made of unique ingredients with bold and distinctive flavor combinations. The bars contain protein, plant-based fiber, and sweetener from natural sources. Plus, they are non-GMO and gluten-free with no artificial preservatives, flavors, or colors. And on top of all that, they are pretty darn delicious.

DIY Stamped Snack Bags | inspiredbycharm.com

Inspired by the Curate Snack bars and their colorful packaging, I thought these DIY Stamped Snack Bags would be the perfect way to carry around all of the food and snacks (that we apparently can’t be without).

Using a few fun stamps and thirty minutes of craft time, here’s what I came up with.

Naturally, I pulled inspiration from my own life, so these designs might not come as a surprise. First up, to suit the season, a pumpkin spice-inspired bag was in order.

DIY Stamped Snack Bags | inspiredbycharm.com

DIY Stamped Snack Bags | inspiredbycharm.com

Simple graphic text reading “Pumpkin Spice and Everything Nice” makes you think of a pumpkin when it’s embellished with a green leaf at the top. Can you imagine receiving this packed with Pumpkin Cinnamon Rolls? Um, yes please!

Adele also worked her way into my crafting. With “Hello It’s Me” on one side of the tote and “Hello From the Other Side” on the opposite side, I created a cute play on words. This one might be my favorite.

DIY Stamped Snack Bags | inspiredbycharm.com

I think this would be great to give to a new neighbor. I’d load it up with Curate Snack bars, a few homemade goodies, and a list of fun things to-do in the area.

This stamping technique (which I’ll show you in a moment) also works on smaller bags.

This zipper pouch is just the thing to stuff with goodies for your next “snack attack.” A zippered pouch keeps everything organized when tossed in another bag, your car, or even your luggage.

DIY Stamped Snack Bags | inspiredbycharm.com

DIY Stamped Snack Bags | inspiredbycharm.com

I found these little cloth bags which are the perfect size to hold one snack.

DIY Stamped Snack Bags | inspiredbycharm.com

What I also love is that they are multi-purpose. You could use them as a surprise in your child’s lunch box, party favors for a shower or wedding, upgraded Halloween gifts, or even a way to dress up a table setting at a dinner party. I always enjoy giving my guests something small to take with them, and these customizable bags are sure to please.

DIY Stamped Snack Bags | inspiredbycharm.com

As you can see, the ideas for these stamped bags, especially when using the alphabet stamps, are only limited by your creativity.

While the process for making these is simple, let me walk you through the steps.

DIY Stamped Snack Bags | inspiredbycharm.com

DIY Stamped Snack Bags

For this project you will need:
Canvas / fabric bags
Stamps
Pigment ink stamp pads
Ruler, optional

DIY Stamped Snack Bags | inspiredbycharm.com

To start off, decide what you want on your bag and plan how you want it laid out. Because you’re stamping with ink, there is little room for error.

There are a variety or rubber stamps available in stores and online. I recommend these clear letter stamps. They work with a clear stamping block. You can spell out whatever you’d like on the block and since it’s clear, you can see exactly where you are stamping. I love that feature.

DIY Stamped Snack Bags | inspiredbycharm.com

With your layout figured out and your stamp ready, load the stamper with ink. For this project, you’ll want pigment ink stamp pads since these work best on fabric*.

Then stamp.

DIY Stamped Snack Bags | inspiredbycharm.com

*If you anticipate needing to wash your bags at some point, you can set the ink using a hot iron. Simply place a piece of scrap fabric over your stamped design and press until hot.

DIY Stamped Snack Bags | inspiredbycharm.com

As I mentioned earlier, there’s little room for error. You may want to practice on a piece of paper or scrap fabric to get your technique down before moving on to your bag.

After you stamp once, you’ll need to load more ink before stamping again.

Continuing stamping until you’re happy with the completed design. Allow the bag to dry for a few hours before using.

DIY Stamped Snack Bags | inspiredbycharm.com

And that’s it, folks. It’s really that simple.

DIY Stamped Snack Bags | inspiredbycharm.com

DIY Stamped Snack Bags | inspiredbycharm.com

Cute, colorful, and customizable bags for all your snacking and food-giving needs. Even if your family or neighborhood isn’t as hung up on food as mine is, gift giving is always in style, and this is such a fun and personalized way to do it.

Happy crafting!

This post was created as part of my collaboration with Curate. The opinions, thoughts, and ideas in this post are my own.

Well, friends, the dramatic conclusion of another Fall Cookie Week is upon us. Even though it’s sad to see FCW end, I hope you’re excited to have 12 new and delicious fall cookie recipes to tempt your taste buds and share with friends. Today, to wrap things up, I’m showing you how to make these Caramel Apple Butter Snickerdoodles.

Caramel Apple Butter Snickerdoodles | inspiredbycharm.com

As you know, my friend and fellow blogger Julie Blanner has joined me for this year’s FCW. To check out all of her recipes, simply click here. And before I forget, if you haven’t already done so be sure to enter our fabulous FCW giveaway. Details on that can be found here.

We hope you try our cookie recipes. In case you do, please share a picture with us on Instagram. Use the hashtag #FallCookieWeek so we can find it.

Fall Cookie Week 2016 | inspiredbycharm.com

Okay, now let’s talk about these snickerdoodles.

As I was planning this year’s FCW, I knew I wanted to include a seasonal snickerdoodle recipe. It was a toss up between one with pumpkin or one with apple butter. Considering that I’d already selected a couple cookie recipes with pumpkin, I figured I’d take the apple butter route.

Caramel Apple Butter Snickerdoodles | inspiredbycharm.com

At first, I was going to make them pretty basic, but after seeing Julie’s Caramel Stuffed Cheesecake Cookies, I was inspired to sneak a soft caramel inside.

Caramel Apple Butter Snickerdoodles | inspiredbycharm.com

If you’ve never eaten cookies with a caramel baked inside, you are missing out. They are truly exceptional. I like to pop them in the microwave for about 10 seconds to remelt the caramel and warm up the cookie. It’s just enough to make them seem like they’re fresh out of the oven.

Of course, you can eat the cookies at room temperature. After being baked, the caramels already seem pretty soft. (BTW, I prefer the Lancaster Soft Caramels. They’re the perfect size and some of the softest caramels around.)

Caramel Apple Butter Snickerdoodles | inspiredbycharm.com

You may be wondering how to get the caramel into the dough. Don’t worry, it’s simple. Portion out your dough and then flatten it into a disk. Place the caramel in the center of the disk and wrap the dough around it. Then roll the dough into a ball, and the caramel will be secure.

Caramel Apple Butter Snickerdoodles | inspiredbycharm.com

Caramel Apple Butter Snickerdoodles | inspiredbycharm.com

For the most part, with this particular recipe, the caramels stay within the dough. This makes biting into one of these seemingly basic cookies kind of a sweet surprise for anyone who doesn’t know what’s inside.

Caramel Apple Butter Snickerdoodles | inspiredbycharm.com

Delicious and fun. Who wouldn’t love that?

Caramel Apple Butter Snickerdoodles | inspiredbycharm.com

Caramel Apple Butter Snickerdoodles

Makes 3 dozen cookies

2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 teaspoons cream of tartar
1 teaspoon apple pie spice
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
1 1/2 cups sugar
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 cup apple butter
36 soft caramels, unwrapped
1/4 cup sugar
2 teaspoons cinnamon

In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, cream of tartar, apple pie spice, and 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon. Set aside.

In a large bowl, using a stand or electric mixer, cream the butter and 1 1/2 cups sugar together until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs and vanilla followed by the apple butter. With the mixer on low, add the dry ingredients until incorporated.

Chill the dough for about 2 hours in the refrigerator or 30-45 minutes in the freezer.

Once the dough is chilled, preheat your oven to 350 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

In a small bowl, whisk together 1/4 cup sugar and 2 teaspoons cinnamon.

Using a 5 cm cookie scoop, portion out the dough. Flatten each scoop of dough into a disk. Place a soft caramel in the middle and then wrap with dough. Roll into a ball and toss it in the cinnamon-sugar mixture until completely coated. Transfer the dough balls to the prepared baking sheet, spacing them about 2 inches apart.

Bake for 15 minutes or until lightly golden. Allow the cookies to rest on the cookie sheet for 2 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Pack and store in an airtight container.
