My Ultimate List of Kitchen Essentials #kitchen #essentials #kitchentools #appliances #dinnerware #serveware #baking #bakeware #glassware #pans

Curious about my favorite tools, appliances, and cookware? Then you’ve come to the right place because I’m sharing the ultimate list of my kitchen essentials. From bakeware to dinnerware, these are my go-to items for creating magic in my kitchen.

My Ultimate List of Kitchen Essentials

If you’ve been following Inspired by Charm for a while, you’ll know that for me, time spent in the kitchen is time well spent. The kitchen is my happy place. I’ve developed and shared hundreds of recipes here, so having kitchen tools and equipment I can rely on is a must. This collection of kitchen essentials has been in development for years. I did the work so you don’t have to.

My Ultimate List of Kitchen Essentials #kitchen #essentials #kitchentools #appliances #dinnerware #serveware #baking #bakeware #glassware #pans

Before we get into this list, there are a few things I want to mention.

First – While this is a very comprehensive list, I am not suggesting that it is a list of EVERYTHING you need or must/should have. Items listed are just personal favorites. For example, I have three different sets of flatware. The average person doesn’t need this. Pick one. Another example: you may notice there’s no blender; that’s because I haven’t found one I love. I will be certain to update this post when I have new things to add to my kitchen-essentials list.

Second – Because this list is pretty extensive, I’m not going to go into great detail as to why I love each item. However, I will make a few small notes so you will understand why I want to recommend the items listed to everyone I know. If you have questions, leave them in the comments below and I’ll do my best to answer them.

Third – I realize that it’s not ideal that every product is not pictured. I think this is one of those posts that’s going to develop and get better over time. Please bear with me. I wanted to get this post to you so for now, published is better than perfect. If there is any way I can make things easier to navigate, please let me know in the comment section below.

Fourth – If you’re new to Inspired by Charm, you may have never seen my kitchen before. Back in 2019 I completed a major kitchen remodel and documented the entire process. You can see the results of that kitchen renovation in this post HERE.

With that being said, let’s get into my Ultimate List of Kitchen Essentials.

Curious about more of my favorites that aren’t in the kitchen? You’re in luck, because I have more post like this! Check out some of my other favorites below:

Kitchen Essentials – Tableware:

When it comes to tableware, my goal was to find something that matched my style, something that I could dress up or dress down, and something that I could mix and match with. The dinnerware collection below checks off all of those boxes and then some. I also have no issues with chips or scratches. In terms of color, white is the obvious choice for me. Yes, colored dishes or patterned dishes can be so much fun, but I found classic white to be best. Why? It goes with everything and your food will always look beautiful on a classic white plate.

In terms of flatware, I have several sets because I’m extra. However, the classic silver set is my go-to everyday flatware. I threw in the others because I love them and if you did want an extra set, they are ones I would recommend.

My Ultimate List of Kitchen Essentials #kitchen #essentials #kitchentools #appliances #dinnerware #serveware #baking #bakeware #glassware #pans

Kitchen Essentials – Glassware:

Glassware might be my favorite kitchen essential to talk about. The French wine glasses and the CB2 Glasses are two of my favorites in this collection. They are so inexpensive and can be used for water, wine, cocktails, etc. I will mention that they are delicate, which I honestly love, but if you are rough on glasses, please take note of this.

I’ll let the other glasses speak for themselves. Some are pricey and some are inexpensive. If they are pricey, it’s for a good reason; it’s because they are a show-stopper of a glass.

One other thing worth mentioning is that you can find beautiful glassware at thrift stores for basically nothing. If you’re looking to save money, shop your local thrift store for glassware. You will not be disappointed.

My Ultimate List of Kitchen Essentials #kitchen #essentials #kitchentools #appliances #dinnerware #serveware #baking #bakeware #glassware #pans

Kitchen Essentials – Cookware/Bakeware:

In terms of cookware, Staub is my go-to whenever possible. Their bakers and cast iron pieces are investments, but worth every penny. They should last you a lifetime. I also love the Goldtouch line at Williams-Sonoma for all of my baking sheets and pans. I honestly can’t say if they are “better” than others, but I love how they perform and I love the color. I think I have most of the collection. I didn’t link them all below, but I did share some of my favorites.

My Ultimate List of Kitchen Essentials #kitchen #essentials #kitchentools #appliances #dinnerware #serveware #baking #bakeware #glassware #pans

Kitchen Essentials – Kitchen Tools:

Well-functioning kitchen tools are a must for any kitchen essentials list. When it comes to knives, Zwilling is a go-to for me. Their knife block sits on my counter and I have spent the last few years filling up my knife block with the knives I love and use the most.

The rest of this list is comprised of things I’m constantly reaching for when I’m in the kitchen. Things like a spatula, tongs, measuring cups, juicers, etc. These are either handy tools to make preparation easier or common tools that I feel work really well. Having the right tools that function well makes all the difference.

My Ultimate List of Kitchen Essentials #kitchen #essentials #kitchentools #appliances #dinnerware #serveware #baking #bakeware #glassware #pans

Kitchen Essentials – Serveware:

I’d say that 95% of my serveware is white or off-white. Again, this is for the same reason I have white dinnerware. Food looks best on white. Exceptions to this rule are wood serving pieces and black serving pieces. I have a few of the wood or black serveware pieces sprinkled in below for a little variety. Certain foods can really shine on these surfaces as well.

You’ll notice the collection I listed below has various shapes and sizes. I think it’s nice to have a collection of varied pieces. You never know what you’re going to need. I also have some vintage ironstone and other vintage pieces I like to use for serving as well.

My Ultimate List of Kitchen Essentials #kitchen #essentials #kitchentools #appliances #dinnerware #serveware #baking #bakeware #glassware #pans

Kitchen Essentials – Storage:

Anytime I share a picture of my butler’s pantry, I always get asked about the wood-topped glass canisters I have for my flour and sugar. I get it. They are so pretty and they function really well too! For me, kitchen storage needs to be functional and pretty.

With the exception of my OXO Pop Canister which I use for dry storage, I try to use mostly glass wherever I can. I just prefer the look, feel, and how well glass cleans. (No red spaghetti sauce-stained plastic containers in this kitchen.) I’ve also listed things for storing leftovers, vegetables, fruits, etc.

My Ultimate List of Kitchen Essentials #kitchen #essentials #kitchentools #appliances #dinnerware #serveware #baking #bakeware #glassware #pans

Kitchen Essentials – Small Appliances:

Generally speaking, I’m a big fan of KitchenAid appliances. (Their new cordless hand mixer is a dream!) I adore this food processor. (FYI – I specifically bought this particular one because it’s the one Ina Garten uses and the “Queen of the Kitchen” wouldn’t use anything less than the best!)

I don’t have a ton of small appliances, but the ones I do have I really like and do use. Throughout the years I’ve tried many. These are the are the workhorses in my kitchen that never let me down.

My Ultimate List of Kitchen Essentials #kitchen #essentials #kitchentools #appliances #dinnerware #serveware #baking #bakeware #glassware #pans

Kitchen Essentials – Cleaning:

The start to a beautiful kitchen is a clean kitchen. These are some of the products and tools that I used, love and recommend. If a product is marked with an *MHC that means it’s from one of my favorite stores: The Maple House Co! You can use coupon code “INSPIRED10” to save 10% on your order. Happy Shopping!

Kitchen Essentials – Ingredients:

I wasn’t sure if I should share pantry staples and ingredients, but there are a few that are must-haves in my kitchen, so I decided to included them in this list.

Kitchen Essentials – Other:

There are a few kitchen essentials that just didn’t fit anywhere else so I needed a miscellaneous section. This list contains items that are FUNctional (fun and functional) or items that are just a must-have for me. For example, my Sonos speaker is one of these items. Great tunes are a must in the kitchen so a good speak is essential.

My Ultimate List of Kitchen Essentials #kitchen #essentials #kitchentools #appliances #dinnerware #serveware #baking #bakeware #glassware #pans

Kitchen Essentials – Vintage:

Finally, I wanted to add that not everything in your kitchen needs to be new in order to be beautiful and functional. In fact, some of my favorite kitchen tools are vintage finds. These are a bit harder to source in a blog post, but some of my favorite vintage kitchen essentials include:

I’ve found that vintage items were built to last. If they are still in good quality after 50+ years, you know they are going to last you a lifetime.

Side note: I talk a lot about vintage treasures here on Inspired by Charm. If you’re looking for more on this topic that goes beyond kitchen decor, tools, and accessories, check out these posts below:

I did my best to link things where I could, but the results will be a bit more general. When it comes to finding vintage kitchen essentials, I recommend checking local thrift and antique stores. For me, it helps to see and feel an item to know if it’s going to be a good fit for my space.

My Ultimate List of Kitchen Essentials #kitchen #essentials #kitchentools #appliances #dinnerware #serveware #baking #bakeware #glassware #pans

That’s a Wrap on My Kitchen Essentials!

If there is a tool, gadget, serving piece, etc. that’s not on my list and you’re curious about it, leave a comment below. Certain products may have skipped my mind. I’m also happy to test out other things that could be added to this best kitchen essentials list. There are a lot of pieces in the kitchen so there is still work to be done.

Curious about something else in my kitchen like paint colors, light fixtures, cabinetry hardware, countertops, etc.? I did a full post with source list which you can find HERE.

With all that being said, I hope you found this list immensely helpful. As I mentioned above, the kitchen is one of my favorite places to be and I rely on quality products that do the job their designed to do. I can recommend each of these items with the upmost confidence.

Are there any kitchen essentials/favorites items you’d like to see or hear about? Let me know in the comments below.

Why You Need a Playlist of Your Favorite Songs #music #playlist #bestsongs #favoritesongs #spotify #tunes #tuesdaytunes

You need to have a playlist of your favorite songs. Yes, you do, and in this post I’m going to tell you why. Plus, I’m sharing my playlist of my favorite songs with you.

Why You Need a Playlist of Your Favorite Songs #music #playlist #bestsongs #favoritesongs #spotify #tunes #tuesdaytunes

As you know, I’ve been sharing playlists on Inspired by Charm for years. Music is a big part of my life, so it’s naturally a big part of the blog too. Recently, my go-to playlist has been My Ultimate Folk Playlist. However, I wanted to switch it up and rock out to some new tunes. I was also thinking about some of my favorite songs, and decided that I needed a playlist with all of my favorites. Well, that’s exactly what I did. I took about 15 or 30 minutes to get the playlist started and filled it with any song that I could think of that I absolutely love.

Why You Need a Playlist of Your Favorite Songs #music #playlist #bestsongs #favoritesongs #spotify #tunes #tuesdaytunes

Why You Need a Playlist of Your Favorite Songs:

I suppose that this is something I should’ve done a long time ago, but it obviously hadn’t occurred to me until recently. I ended up creating this playlist when I was having a rough time with life. Things just felt kind of out of sorts: I was in a bad mood, I was easily irritated, and honestly just kind of sad.

Let me tell you friends, it is amazing what five hours worth of your favorite music can do to change your mood and lift your spirits. It’s life-changing. (And yes, as of right now, this playlist is 5+ hours long and I assume it will continue to grow.)

Just imagine a playlist that is perfectly tailored to you, a playlist where you know every single word to every single song. It’s joy-inducing.

Why You Need a Playlist of Your Favorite Songs #music #playlist #bestsongs #favoritesongs #spotify #tunes #tuesdaytunes

I love this playlist so much that I’ve been listening to it nonstop since I created it. This is both a blessing and a curse as I have a tendency to wear things out pretty quickly. In fact, I’m almost thinking about making a new playlist for spring and summer just so I have something else to listen to. But, when I think about it, can you really overplay your all-time favorite songs?

My Favorite Songs of All Time:

I share this playlist sort of cautiously because chances are no one else may like it. After all, it was created specifically for me. However, after experiencing the joy that this playlist has brought me, sharing it almost felt like an obligation.

Now, if you decide to have a listen, I’m going tell you this in advance: this playlist is extremely unique. There are country songs, songs from the 80s and 90s, contemporary songs, slow songs, fast songs, and it goes on from there.

In fact, as I was putting together this playlist, I was reminded of one of my favorite “eras” of music. (I use the word “era” loosely here.) But it was back when Dawson’s Creek was on the air and I absolutely loved every song they played on the show. I assume there was internet at that time because I vaguely remember trying desperately to figure out what every song was. (Unfortunately we didn’t have Shazam back then.)

Why You Need a Playlist of Your Favorite Songs #music #playlist #bestsongs #favoritesongs #spotify #tunes #tuesdaytunes

A couple years ago I read Amy Poehler’s Yes Please (highly recommend by the way), and in one of the chapters she talked about time travel and about how very real and possible it is. I think about this chapter’s message constantly. I’m always thinking of ways I can time travel in my everyday life. Songs on this playlist allow me to time travel back to some of the most cherished moments of my life. Who knew a playlist could have so much power.

With all that being said, if you still want to give my playlist a listen, you can find it HERE. As always, I use Spotify to create my playlist and listen to my music. (If you like this playlist, or any of my other playlist, you can follow me on Spotify HERE. I have dozens of playlists!) I know everyone has their favorite music streaming service, and Spotify happens to be mine. I’ve also embedded a music player widget into this blog post. I don’t think they allow you to listen to a song in its entirety in the widget, but it will give you an idea of what you’ll find if you want to listen to more.

If you do listen, I would be very curious to know if you enjoy the playlist . Who knows, we may just have the same taste in music. Maybe we’re meant to be best friends!

Want more playlists from yours truly? You can find all of my playlists HERE.

But that’s not the point here. If you don’t have a playlist of all your favorite songs, go create it NOW. I promise it will become a new go-to. Use it whenever your feeling out of sorts, irritated, or sad. It’s an instant mood booster. Use it when you want to time travel. Use it whenever you need it.

Happy listening, friends!

How to Grow a Coleus Topiary #coleus #topiary #planting #garden #gardening #topiaries #coleusplant

Learn how to make a beautiful and eye-catching Coleus Topiary. I’m walking you through the step-by-step process on how to make this stunning addition for your home and garden.

How to Grow a Coleus Topiary

Did you know you could turn coleus into a topiary? Well, you can, and the end results are stunning. (If this is new to you, don’t feel bad because I just found out this year too.)

This post is a little different in that I don’t have a completed project to share with you. I didn’t want to wait until the end of summer to write this post because then you couldn’t enjoy the project with me and hopefully try if for yourself. So, I decided to write the post now and will continue to update it as I grow my coleus topiary. I think it will be a fun way to do a project together.

How to Grow a Coleus Topiary #coleus #topiary #planting #garden #gardening #topiaries #coleusplant

To give you an idea of how a completed topiary will look, I have included some images of the final result, so you have an idea of where we are headed. I’ve sourced all of the photos to their original creator and hope to eventually replace them with the results of my own coleus topiary journey.

As you can see, the results of this project are truly stunning. Coleus come in a variety of colors, leaf shapes, textures, etc. While I had originally intended to only grow 2-3 of these Coleus Topiaries, I ended up with 12. I just couldn’t resist all of the beautiful coleus varieties. Plus, I wanted to ensure I had several successful topiaries (so if one or two don’t make it, I’ll be certain to have a few that do).

With all that being said, let’s get into the process. I hope you’ll purchase some coleus plants and come along on this creative adventure with me!

How to Grow a Coleus Topiary #coleus #topiary #planting #garden #gardening #topiaries #coleusplant

Growing a Coleus Topiary:

1. Buy A Coleus Plant
You’ll need a coleus plant to start. If you’re feeling extra ambitious, you’re welcome to start your coleus plant from seed. If not, most garden centers and nurseries sell coleus. It is available in a variety of colors, sizes, leaf styles, etc. This process of creating a topiary should work with any of the coleus varieties, so choose the one you like best.

How to Grow a Coleus Topiary #coleus #topiary #planting #garden #gardening #topiaries #coleusplant

How to Grow a Coleus Topiary #coleus #topiary #planting #garden #gardening #topiaries #coleusplant

If you want a particular height for your final topiary be sure to check the tag to see the max growth height for the variety you are selecting.

Also, I like to select a plant with an obvious center stem/trunk like the plant pictured above. I found these pretty easy to find, though one of my coleus had several main stems/trunks. This style will work too, but first you will need to eliminate all of the stems but one.

2. Pot Your Coleus
Next, plant your coleus in your chosen pot. I don’t like to go too big to start, but want to make sure the plant’s roots have enough room. Keep in mind that you will likely need to replant your topiary as it grows.

How to Grow a Coleus Topiary #coleus #topiary #planting #garden #gardening #topiaries #coleusplant

Choose a heavy pot as eventually your plant will be top heavy and the right pot will help to prevent your topiary from falling over.

3. Pinch Leaves
Once potted, choose one stem to serve as your trunk. Then, remove all of the other stems with pruning shears. Coleus stems can be very fragile, so take your time and be patient.

If there are single leaves on your main truck you can leave those on the trunk as they will help fuel the plant’s growth. You can remove them later or they may eventually just fall off on their own.

How to Grow a Coleus Topiary #coleus #topiary #planting #garden #gardening #topiaries #coleusplant

4. Stake Your Coleus
To help support your topiary during it’s growth, insert a stake with a length close to the desired height (around 2-3 feet) in the pot near the trunk. (I’m using these bamboo stakes.) Attach the trunk to the stake with garden ties.

As the plant grows, continue to attach the trunk to your stake. Over time, the main stem will harden and become more of a woody trunk. Even at this stage, the trunk isn’t super sturdy, so the stake will be essential for the life of the plant.

How to Grow a Coleus Topiary #coleus #topiary #planting #garden #gardening #topiaries #coleusplant

How to Grow a Coleus Topiary #coleus #topiary #planting #garden #gardening #topiaries #coleusplant

5. Pruning Your Topiary
In addition to continuing to attach the trunk of the coleus to the stake as it grows, you’ll also want to continue pruning off any additional stems that will emerge. You’ll just want a cluster of leaves at the top which will eventually result in a foliage-free trunk.

Once your topiary reaches close to the desired height for your project, pinch off the top. This will stimulate more branching from from the cluster of leaves at the top which will eventually form your topiary.

How to Grow a Coleus Topiary #coleus #topiary #planting #garden #gardening #topiaries #coleusplant

Then, as your topiary ball starts to grow and form, continue to pinch the stem tips at the top of the plant. This will help to create a dense ball of foliage.

You’ll also want to pinch off any flower spikes. You want the plant to put the energy into the foliage; the flowers will will drain the plant of resources.

6. Be Patient and Have Fun
Like any topiary, this process doesn’t happen over night. I’m assuming this will take an entire summer and then some. If you want beautiful results, know that this process will take time.

How to Grow a Coleus Topiary #coleus #topiary #planting #garden #gardening #topiaries #coleusplant

Other Helpful Coleus Topiary Growing Tips:

Summer Sunlight:
Your coleus with thrive in moderate light to shade during the summer months.

Winter Sunlight:
Coleus prefers brighter light in the winter with several hours of direct sunlight.

Watering:
Water regularly as coleus tend to be thirsty plants. Do not overwater or allow the coleus to sit in soaking water as this can cause the stem to rot.

Fertilizer:
Use a 10-10-10 water-soluble fertilizer at 1/4 strength every week from March to October.

Outdoor Care:
Avoid strong winds and heavy rain as these can damage your coleus.

Repotting:
As your topiary grows, it’s likely that you’ll need to repot it at least once or twice a year.

Winterize:
I know that coleus grow fairly quickly, but I’m not sure exactly how much progress we’ll make in one summer. The good news: you can bring a coleus inside during the winter months and it will continue to grow and thrive. (Or so I’ve been told.)

And that’s it!

Coleus Topiary UPDATE:

Here’s is a look at how my topiaries were doing about 3/4th of the way through the season. I had intentions of taking more pictures but they were hit by frost and destroyed. I really loved this process and plan to do it again this year.

Roasted Zucchini Panzanella

Anyone else love panzanella as much as I do? If you’re not familiar with panzanella, it is a Tuscan tossed salad made with soaked stale bread, tomatoes, onions, cheese, etc. Does this sound delicious? It is!!!

I shared a unique panzanella recipe a few years ago in which avocado was the star ingredient. That recipe is delicious. You can find it HERE. I also have another bread salad HERE made with bread, radicchio, blue cheese, and pancetta! So good!

Anyway, I wanted to make bread salad again, but thought I would switch it up and try something new which lead me to this Roasted Zucchini Panzanella.

Roasted Zucchini Panzanella Salad #vegetable #roasted #zucchini #panzanella #salad #recipe #summer #picnic #breadsalad

The base for the recipe is the same, I just used roasted zucchini. The combination is tasty, plus it’s a great way to use up all that zucchini when your garden is producing more than you know what to do with.

As far as the other vegetables in this salad, I used tomatoes, green pepper, and red onion. One of the great things about panzanella is you can use whatever vegetables you love. If you want to substitute an ingredient, go for it. Have a vegetable you need to use up in the refrigerator, toss it in. Make it your own.

There is so much to love about this unique salad. I hope you’ll give it a try. Let me walk you through the recipe.

Looking for more tasty summer salad recipes? You’re in luck because I have an entire post dedicated to my favorites. You can find those HERE.

Chocolate Chip Cookie Brownies #chocolatechip #cookies #brownies #homemade #dessert #bar #dessertbar #recipe

Over the past couple of years I’ve seen several versions of this recipe on the internet. After doing some research and testing, I put together a delectable, easy, and approachable recipe anyone can use to whip up this sweet combo.

While delicious any time of the year, this is one of those recipes I love for the summer months. It’s a quick go-to that will complement any picnic, summer party, road trip, or impromptu gathering at home.

Another great thing about this recipe is that many of the ingredients are pantry and refrigerator staples. As long as you have some good chocolate, you’ll be all set! You can whip these brownies up in a moment’s notice and you’ll be ready with a treat that everyone is going to love.

With that being said, let me walk you through the recipe for these tasty bars.

Chocolate Chip Cookie Brownies #chocolatechip #cookies #brownies #homemade #dessert #bar #dessertbar #recipe

How to Make Chocolate Chip Cookie Brownies:

Begin by preheating your oven to 350 degrees F. Prepare a 9 x 13 pan by spraying it with baking spray, then lining it with parchment paper, and finally, spraying it again. Set aside.

To make the cookie dough, use a medium-sized bowl and whisk together the flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. Set aside. (There is a full ingredient list as well as detailed instructions in the printable recipe card below.)

In a large bowl, beat together the butter, brown sugar, and granulated sugar on medium-high until light and fluffy. Then, beat in the egg and vanilla extract. Reduce the speed to low and mix in the flour mixture until just incorporated. Stir in the chocolate chips until evenly combined.

Next, prepare the brownie batter by melting the butter and chocolate in a heat-proof bowl set over a pot of simmering water. Remove from the heat and then whisk in the sugar. Whisk in the eggs one at a time until combined. Whisk in the cocoa powder, salt, and vanilla. Then use a spatula to fold in the flour until combined.

Lightly cover with a piece of foil and bake for 20 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for another 28-30 minutes.

Allow to cool completely on a wire rack. Lift the brownies out using the parchment paper and cut into squares. Store extras in an airtight container for 3-4 days.

That’s it my friends. Pretty simple, right? As much as I have enjoyed a boxed brownie mix, I may never go back.

And, if you want to take these Chocolate Chip Cookie Brownies to the next level, might I suggest topping them with vanilla ice cream and a drizzle of hot fudge? You’ll be glad you did!

No matter how you serve them, I hope you give this recipe a try.

How to Add Vintage Charm to Your Home #vintage #vintagefinds #antiques #homedecor #decor #decorating #charm #vintagecharm

As someone that loves antiquing and loves decorating with vintage finds, I’m excited to share my tips and ideas for styling your home with antique decor and vintage treasures.

Decorating with Antique Decor and Vintage Finds #antiques #vintage #vintagefinds #decor #homedecor #decorating #styling

Decorating with Antique Decor and Vintage Finds:

Whether you’re new here or a lifelong IBC reader, my name is Michael and I love antiques and vintage finds. Not only do I love the process of hunting down these unique treasures, but I love bringing them home and incorporating them into my spaces. Recently, I’ve heard from several of you that you want to do more antiquing, but are still a little unsure or apprehensive on how to incorporate your finds into your home.

Since I think there are probably endless ways to do this and thus this post could go on forever, I’ve decided to put together a list of some of my favorite and approachable ways that anyone can use to begin decorating with antiques. Let’s get to it.

How to Incorporate Antique Into Your Home Decor #homedecor #vintagedecor #anitquedecor #styling #decorating

How to Incorporate Antiques Into Your Home Decor #antique #shelf #walldecor #decor #vintageart #homedecor #styling

Styling Your Home with Antique Decor:

Unique Artwork

One thing I always look for when I’m hunting items for antique decor is artwork. Even though you’ll most likely find your best deals at thrift stores, I’ve amassed a beautiful collection of vintage artwork from all of my antiquing adventures.

What I love about purchasing art from antique and thrift stores is that you’re guaranteed to find something unique that not everyone has hanging in their home. Also, I appreciate the vintage frames. In my opinion, they are far superior to anything you can find that’s new.

How to Incorporate Antiques Into Your Home Decor #antique #shelf #walldecor #decor #vintageart #homedecor #styling #paintbynumber

While I have vintage art scattered all around my home, I thought that in this post I would share two notable collections as inspiration. First, the paint-by-number grouping I have in my family room and then the gallery wall going up my staircase that I started more recently.

It’s also worth mentioning that you don’t need all vintage art. I personally love mixing new with old to create a diversely beautiful collection.

Try Functional Items

Another suggestion is to incorporate vintage decor you can actually use.

Think about things like:

  • glassware and dinnerware
  • baskets for decor and storage
  • furniture, including chairs, tables, dressers, etc.
  • a coat rack, hooks, or peg rails

This can be a great place to start because you’re not wandering around aimlessly. Instead, you’re actually looking to find something that will serve a purpose in your home.

If you are looking for larger pieces, I always recommend jotting down notes and measurements in advance to aid you in your decision making. It’s also helpful to keep in mind some of the other colors, wood tones, etc. in your room so that you can have an idea of how the piece will look in your space.

Adding items like these to your existing decor should be a breeze as you already have a need for them. This will help to build up your comfort level for adding more throughout your space.

Here is another idea. I love collection vintage tins so I’m always thinking of creative ways to use them. Here I used a larger candy tin to hide away my remote colors.

How to Incorporate Antique Into Your Home Decor #antiques #vintagefinds #homedecor #styling #brass #decorating

Start A Collection.

Another great way to add vintage finds to your home is by starting a collection.

In fact, I recommend this idea so much that I wrote an entire blog series about it. The series is still in progress, but you can find the post on “How to Start a Home Decor CollectionHERE and the post on “How to Display a Home Decor CollectionHERE.

How to Incorporate Antiques Into Your Home Decor #antiques #vintagefinds #homedecor #styling #vintagetins #decorating

Starting A Home Decor Collection #homedecor #collection #collecting #vintagecollection #vintage finds #decorating

I think that decorating with a collection is a really unique, fun, and an easy way to add personality to your home. Doing it with antiques takes it to the next level of awesomeness.

I personally like to use collections to decorate shelves, bookcases, coffee tables, etc. A grouping of similar items is an easy way to make a big statement in your decor.

How to Incorporate Antiques Into Your Home Decor #antiques #vintagefinds #homedecor #styling #vintage #brass #decorating

Embrace Quirky.

Speaking of blog posts about vintage decor, I also started a series about embracing quirky decor. (You can find that HERE.)  I am not saying that all antiques are or need to be quirky. This isn’t the case at all, but it’s definitely something you can and should consider when you’re looking to add vintage finds to your home.

Adding one quirky item to your dresser or on the center of your dining room table can really let your personality shine through your decor.

How to Decorate with Antique / Vintage Finds #antique #vintage #vintagefinds #homedecor #decorating

How to Add Quirky Decor to Your Home #homedecor #quirky #unique #collecting #vintagefinds #decorating

Just Do It!

Okay, I realize this may not sound very helpful, but at the end of the day, this is the best advice I can give you. Often times we get wrapped up in our own heads and think we “need” the exact antique that we saw someone on Instagram have/use and then want to duplicate the effect. Either that or we need someone else to tell us what antique find looks good in our home. However, that’s not what it’s about at all. In fact, I think that defeats the purpose.

When I’m shopping for antiques, I look for things that I find beautiful, things that speak to me. This is when the magic happens.

Antique Decor: Final Thought

The final thing I want to mention is that shopping for vintage decor requires time and patience. If you’re looking to completely transform a room in a weekend, vintage decor and furnishings may not be the way to go.

For example, I spent over a year looking for a sideboard for my dining room. My paint-by-number art grouping took months to complete. These special treasures are hard to come by and the more specific your needs/wants, the harder it will be. Go into the process with patience.

Frozen Old Fashioned Slush Recipe #oldfashioned #slush #recipe #frozen #cocktail #bourbon

This Frozen Old Fashioned Slush recipe takes the classic cocktail to a new, and dare I say it, much cooler level. Made with bourbon, this a refreshing and flavorful drink that can be served any time of the year.

Frozen Old Fashioned Slush Recipe

Frozen cocktails have a special place in my heart, which is why I’m so excited to share this Frozen Old Fashioned recipe with you. For as long as I can remember, my family has served frozen cocktails during the Christmas season. We called them “slushes.” The one that always comes to mind is a Slow Gin Slush. (Writing that sentence reminds me I should try to get a recipe for that!)

Frozen Old Fashioned Slush Recipe #oldfashioned #slush #recipe #frozen #cocktail #bourbon

Here in central PA, many of us go “treeing” during the week of Christmas. This entails visiting friends and relatives to see their Christmas trees, play cards, snack, talk, and enjoy time together. More often than not, slushes are on the menu. I obviously did not partake in slushes when I was a kid, but now, as an adult, they’re a beloved holiday treat.

This past Christmas, my dad’s wife made a new slush for us: this Frozen Old Fashioned. It was so good that I thought I’d share the recipe with you today.

So why am I talking about a “holiday” drink with spring and summer approaching? Well, you don’t need to wait until the holiday season to serve this cocktail recipe. I’m sharing it now because it’s also a refreshing libation for the warmer months ahead. As I said earlier, this Frozen Old Fashioned can be enjoyed all year long.

Now that you know my history with slushes, let’s whip up this delectable drink.

What do you need to Make Frozen Old Fashioned Slush Recipe:

Before we get into the recipe, let me tell you what you’re going to need to make this delicious slush recipe.

Frozen Old Fashioned Slush Recipe #oldfashioned #slush #recipe #frozen #cocktail #bourbon

How to Make this Frozen Old Fashioned Slush Recipe:

First off, keep in mind that this is a frozen cocktail recipe, so it requires freezer time. That means you’ll need to prepare some things in advance.

To create the cocktail mix, add water and sugar to a large saucepan. While stirring, bring the mixture to a boil. Cook until the sugar is dissolved. Then, let the mixture cool completely. (I’ve shared a full ingredient list and recipe instructions in the printable recipe card below.)

Next, stir in the bourbon, orange juice concentrate, cherry juice, and bitters. Pour this mixture into a freezer-safe baking dish that will hold at least 3 quarts. Freeze for 10-12 hours or overnight. If possible, stir the mixture with a fork once or twice while it freezes.

For this recipe, I’m using Four Roses Bourbon. It’s a favorite at my house. I usually serve Single Barrel, but for this recipe I opted for their standard recipe.

Frozen Old Fashioned Slush Recipe #oldfashioned #slush #recipe #frozen #cocktail #bourbon

As I’ve mentioned many times, I prefer Luxardo cherries. I’m using them and their juice in this recipe.

Frozen Old Fashioned Slush Recipe #oldfashioned #slush #recipe #frozen #cocktail #bourbon

I think they’re superior to standard maraschino cherries, but they do come with a higher price tag. I made a note in the recipe that it’s okay to use maraschino cherries instead.

Once your mixture is a nicely frozen slush, it’s ready to serve.

Frozen Old Fashioned Slush Recipe #oldfashioned #slush #recipe #frozen #cocktail #bourbon

To serve, place about 3/4 cup of the Old Fashioned mixture in a glass. Top with 1/4 cup lemon-lime soda. Garnish with an orange slice and a cherry.

This cocktail is so delicious! If you want to make it a bit stronger, feel free to add another splash of Four Roses Bourbon.

Ingredients

  • 6 cups water
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 cups bourbon - (My favorite is Four Roses.)
  • 12 ounces (one can) frozen orange juice concentrate - thaweed
  • 2 tablespoons Luxardo cherry juice*
  • 1/4 cup bitters
For serving:
  • Lemon-lime soda - (1/4 cup per serving)
  • Orange slice and Luxardo cherries*

Instructions

  • Start by adding the water and sugar to a large saucepan. Stir continuously and bring to a boil. Cook until the sugar is dissolved. This will take about five minutes. Allow to cool completely.
  • Next, stir in the bourbon, orange juice concentrate, cherry juice, and bitters. Pour this mixture into a freezer-safe baking dish that will hold at least 3 quarts. Freeze for 10-12 hours or overnight. If possible, stir the mixture with a fork once or twice during the freezing process.

Living Room Fireplace and Bookcase Styling #fireplace #mantel #livingroom #decor #decorating #bookcase #bookshelf #styling

I’m inviting you back into my home to share some living room fireplace and bookcase styling. I hope this everyday decor will delight and inspire you in decorating your own space.

Late last fall, I had some beautiful new cabinetry installed in my living room. (You can see the before HERE and the after HERE.) The project finished up just before I began decorating my home for Christmas, so I didn’t really get to decorate my beautiful new custom cabinetry. Well, I’ve finally given the area a fresh new look and I’m thrilled to be able to share it with you today.

Let me show you around!

Living Room Fireplace and Bookcase Styling

Updated Mantel Artwork:

During the holidays and winter months, I hung a beautiful piece of artwork from Lindsay Letters that depicted a beautiful field of snowy pine trees. As much as I adore this piece, I knew I needed something different for a non-wintery look.

Thankfully, Lindsay Letters came through for me again and I found the perfect replacement with her Sea Glass Coast canvas print. This particular size (48 x 16) is the perfect fit and the colors work wonderfully with the rest of the room.

It reminds me of staring out at the ocean while standing on a beautiful sandy beach and that’s exactly what I need right now. It’s calming. It’s uplifting. It’s like a mini-vacation right in my living room and I am HERE FOR IT! You can find this piece HERE.

To keep my beautiful new woodwork free from holes, I used these large picture hanging strips to hang the artwork. I used a total of six sets of strips, which might be overkill, but I’d rather be safe than sorry.

Also, speaking of Lindsay, she recently launched her new Spring 2021 collection called “Girls House”. It’s stunning. There is so much to love, but THIS is my favorite piece from the collection. Also, if you have a frame TV, she recently released some pieces you can use as artwork for your TV. They are amazing!! I actually just purchased a frame TV for my bedroom and I’ll definitely be using a Lindsay Letters piece once I get it hung. Details on Lindsay’s FrameTV artwork can be found HERE.

Simplified Styling:

The last time I shared my living room fireplace and bookcase styling, the area was all decked out for the holidays. As much as I adored that look, I opted for a more simplified styling to move me into spring and summer.

To be honest, I kept a lot of the styling the same, but removed the holiday decor and added in some more spring and everyday items.

I love these weathered newel posts which I found at a local antique shop. The colors work so well with the rest of the styling and match some of the other wood items I have on the bookcases.

Also, I get a lot of questions about the light fixtures above my bookcases. Aren’t they fabulous? They are from Hudson Valley Lighting. You can find them HERE.

Quirky Touches:

I recently wrote a blog post all about my love of quirky home decor touches and why I think they are so important when decorating a room. (You can find that post HERE if you missed it.) So naturally, I had to include a few in this space.

Living Room Fireplace and Bookcase Styling #fireplace #mantel #livingroom #decor #decorating #bookcase #bookshelf #styling

One of my favorite quirky details is my brass animal collection. I have been collecting these for a few years now. They are all vintage. I usually scoop them up when I’m antiquing or at a flea market. The collection started with a pair of brass deer I have in my powder room and grew from there. I then added bunnies, mice, a pig, and my latest addition: a snail. I’m not sure if it’s just because he’s new, but he might be my favorite.

While it may not be defined as quirky, I also love this male bust which I found while antiquing last year. I have been on the hunt for one of these and I just love what it adds to this space.

Finally, my favorite new unique addition is this set of pottery crowns. They are made by the fabulous Julie LoRusso of JL Studio Pottery. I’m honestly obsessed with them. I really love any sort of handmade pottery bowl or vessel. Turn them into a crown and it’s a must-have for me.

I styled the pottery crowns with some plants and a candle, but they are so versatile that you can use them for anything. Julie has a variety of styles available in her Etsy store HERE. She also takes custom orders if you can’t find exactly what you want in her shop. Tell her Inspired by Charm sent you!

Botanical Elements:

I’ve said this many times here on Inspired by Charm, but if you’re ever decorating a space and you feel like it’s missing something, and you’re not sure what it is, chances are it’s a botanical element. Plants and flowers always add that final finishing touch to a space. They are an element that breathes life, freshness, movement, and color to anything you’re decorating.

Living Room Fireplace and Bookcase Styling #fireplace #mantel #livingroom #decor #decorating #bookcase #bookshelf #styling

I’ve scattered lots in this area as I’m anxious for the earth to come alive again. Orchids are one of my favorite budget-friendly flowers. The one on my mantel has been blooming for two and a half months now. I think it was $30 at the grocery store. That’s such an amazing deal for fresh flowers that will likely last over 3 months.

Living Room Fireplace and Bookcase Styling #fireplace #mantel #livingroom #decor #decorating #bookcase #bookshelf #styling

I also tucked a few other plants into my bookcase shelves. You might be surprised (as I’m typically not a fan of them) since two of these plants are faux! Say what? Can you guess which two?

One is this trailing plant in the terracotta pot pictured here.

Living Room Fireplace and Bookcase Styling #fireplace #mantel #livingroom #decor #decorating #bookcase #bookshelf #styling

The other is this silvery blue-green plant I have tucked into one of my crown vessels.

Living Room Fireplace and Bookcase Styling #fireplace #mantel #livingroom #decor #decorating #bookcase #bookshelf #styling

This area doesn’t get great light so having real plants on this bookcase isn’t always easy or practical. With the exception of the orchid, I occasionally move the rest of my plants to different locations around my house so they can get the light they need to do their best.

Living Room Fireplace and Bookcase Styling #fireplace #mantel #livingroom #decor #decorating #bookcase #bookshelf #styling

I love having these two faux plants here because now there’s always a touch of green. And honestly, no one would ever know they are faux until they get really close to them or touch them. You can purchase these plants HERE and HERE. They are on the pricey side, so I recommend having a coupon or waiting for a sale.

For some final finishing touches, I added other antique elements including a vintage lunch box as a bookend, an alabaster sphere (I found it at HomeGoods), and lots of my favorite books in a coordinating color palette.

I also managed to sneak in a few photos of my ironstone planter. I wrote a post all about how you can DIY these gorgeous spring planters HERE.

These planters were such a fabulous way to bring a little life and spring into my home this time of year. This grape hyacinth planter was a favorite.

That’s it! Living Room Fireplace and Bookcase Styling

And with that, I think I can say that my living room fireplace and bookcase styling is ready for a new season.

I hope you enjoyed this little tour of an updated area of my home. I also hope you picked up a few ideas that you can use in your own living room fireplace and/or bookcase styling.

I’m inviting you back into my home to share some living room fireplace and bookcase styling. I hope this everyday decor will delight and inspire you in decorating your own space. How to Add Quirky Decor to Your Home #homedecor #quirky #unique #collecting #vintagefinds #decorating

Have you ever decorated a space and thought it was missing something? Maybe it was a touch of quirky. In this post, I want to share why I recommend a bit of quirky home decor and what that means to me.

How and Why To Add Quirky Elements to Your Home Decor

When I’m creating posts about decorating here on Inspired by Charm, one piece of advice I give over and over again is to incorporate some quirky decor elements into your home. As I am currently retweaking my own spaces for a new season, I was thinking more about this and had lots of thoughts I wanted to share with you in hopes that they might be helpful.

In this two-post series, I’m going to share why I recommend adding quirky elements to your home decor and then how to do it. Today is the “why”; next will be the “how.”

How to Add Quirky Decor to Your Home #homedecor #quirky #unique #collecting #vintagefinds #decorating

I also think it’s important to mention that quirky doesn’t necessarily mean weird, goofy, strange, etc. Quirky could be an old artist’s palette slathered with colorful paint that is used as wall decor or using a collection of saved movie ticket stubs to create artwork. Quirky could be using something in a different way than its intended use. Maybe you could turn a basket into a light fixture or tuck a plant into a vintage coffee tin.

As I share my thoughts below, I hope these ideas make sense and will give you some ideas on how to make your decorating more uniquely you.

Note: When possible, i’ve tried to share links for every image that I used in this post. If you’d like to see more of the spaces featured, just click the link under each photo and you’ll be directed to the coordinating blog post.

Why Add Quirky Elements to Your Home Decor?

1. To Showcase Your Personality

Because of the nature of design and current designing trends, I think it’s really easy to be influenced by what’s popular. While there are benefits to keeping up-to-date with what’s new and trendy, I think it’s even more important to honor your own unique style and personality. The unnerving part about this is that not everyone is going to understand or like it. This is where you need a little courage and encouragement to do what makes you happy.

For example, pink might not be a popular color to paint kitchen cabinets. But if you dream of a pink kitchen and want nothing more than to sip your morning coffee staring at that beautiful blush hue, then that’s exactly what you should do. Want purple chairs around your fire pit in the woods? Do that! Your home is a reflection of you and your family. Use it to showcase your unique personality.

2. Create Something to Discover

Now, I’m not telling everyone to go out and paint something in their home a random color for the sake of being “different.” You can add quirky elements to your home without them being “in your face.” It can be as simple as just thinking about those special little details. For example, in my powder room, I have a brass, bunny head hook to hang my tea towel. In my kitchen, I have a crock filled with a collection of antique rolling pins.

These aren’t outlandish things, but they create interest. They tell a story. It’s something to discover. Maybe there is a family heirloom you can incorporate. Maybe you can create a gallery wall using artwork that you and your family created. Maybe you can frame old recipes that your grandma wrote and hang them in your kitchen.

One way I like to do this is with my Christmas tree decorating. I always tuck a weird ornament or a set of really odd ornaments into my tree. For several years it was a set of gold sequined animals (lions, rhinoceroses, unicorns, etc.). Another year it was colorful pheasants. Last it was a bunch of mushroom ornaments. From a distance, you wouldn’t even notice them, but when you got up close and looked, there was something unique to discover.

3. Everyone Loves to Laugh

We’ve always heard that laughter is the best medicine. And not that you want your decorating style to make people laugh, but a funny or quirky accessory in your home can help your guests feel welcome and comfortable.

Have you ever been in a home where everything is so immaculate that you’re afraid to take off your coat for fear a stray cat hair will leap off of your jacket and destroy their “perfect” space? Now that’s not to say there’s anything wrong with that, as do I love that people take care of things and show a sense of pride in their home. However, adding something clever and interesting to your decor may be a sign to your guests (and even yourself) that it’s okay to let your guard down a bit, have a little fun, and be comfortable.

4. It Makes Your Home Memorable

It takes me a very long time to complete a space. Can I complete a room in a weekend? Not possible. Does the room still look beautiful in the process? Sure does. Finding just the right interesting objects takes time. This is just my process.

Sure, I could head to one of my favorite home decor stores and finish things as quickly as possible, but then the room feels like it could belong in anyone’s home. I like to take my time to find unique and special pieces that feel like they could only be in my home.

These are the details that people will remember when they see your space and that will make a house feel like your home. In addition, these are the details that you’ll enjoy coming home to after a long day. When I look around my home, my favorite and most memorable pieces are the ones that are unique, quirky, and personal to me.

5. It’s Budget Friendly

We all know how expensive new and trendy decor can be. (Especially if you’re continually trying to keep up with the latest trends.) Now It is fine to use brand new items for adding a touch of quirky to your decor, but I’ve found some of my best and most unique pieces during my antiquing and thrifting adventures.

If you’re looking to add some originality to your home decor, visit your local thrift store, stop at a garage sale, visit an estate sale, or go to your local flea market. These places are just loaded with treasures and you will spend significantly less money than you would at a big-box home decor store. Plus, the chances of anyone else having the same thing in their home are minimal. This leads me to my final point …

6. Your Decor Becomes an Original

One of my favorite things about home decor and interior design is when someone does something I’ve never seen before. I love when someone tried a new paint color I haven’t seen or used a decorative item that not everyone else is using. It’s interesting, unique, and memorable.

One of my biggest decorating thrills is to bring pieces into my home that no one else has in their space. It’s a way to create an environment that is truly unique, memorable, and special.

That’s a Wrap on Quirky Home Decor …

… for now at least.

When you’re looking to decorate a space in your home, I cannot encourage you enough to look deep into your decorating spirit to discover what YOU really want, rather than simply doing what’s popular, trendy, or easily available. Embrace the quirky!

As I mentioned above, I ended up having a lot to say about this topic, so I needed to divide it up. In the next post, I’m going to talk more about the “HOW.” Meaning, how can you add some quirky elements to your home decor. I’ll also share more examples of how I implemented some of these thoughts and ideas into my own space.

Stay tuned for part two of this post next week!

Tulipiere - Flower Vase / Tulip Vase #tulipiere #vase #flowervase #tulips #tulipvase #flowerarranging #flowers #bouquet

If you’re looking for a beautiful, easy, and interesting way to arrange flowers, look no further than a Tulipiere. In this post, I’m explaining what it is, where to get one, and how to use it.

Tulipiere - Flower Vase / Tulip Vase #tulipiere #vase #flowervase #tulips #tulipvase #flowerarranging #flowers #bouquet

Several weeks ago on Instagram, I shared a look into a cabinet I have in my dining room. The cabinet holds a collection of white serving pieces and vases. Among that mix is an odd-looking piece with several spouts on top. It’s been in my collection for years, and while I never thought much about it, many of my followers asked about this peculiar-looking piece.

What is it you ask? A tulipiere!

What is a Tulipiere?

So you’re probably wondering, what is a tulipiere? In simplest terms, it’s a vase for tulips.

They were invented back in Holland back in the 1600s. At that point in time tulips were considered very precious and thus expensive and valuable. They became a status symbol. The tulipiere was created with numerous holes or short spouts and a central water source and was used to display flowers. Experts vary in opinion on how they were originally used. Some sources say the spouts were used to hold actual flowering bulbs such as tulip, hyacinth, crocus, etc., while other sources say the spouts were designed to hold single blooms.

In my personal experience I’ve never used them to hold a bulb, but find them to be a beautiful vessel for holding many single blossoms.

Tulipiere - Flower Vase / Tulip Vase #tulipiere #vase #flowervase #tulips #tulipvase #flowerarranging #flowers #bouquet

Originally, tulipieres varied in size from petite to tall pyramids that would actually sit on the floor. While you can still purchase a variety of shapes and sizes, most of the ones that I have seen are smaller, tabletop varieties.

Oh, and if you’re wondering how to pronounce “tulipiere”, there’s a great pronunciation HERE.

Tulipiere - Flower Vase / Tulip Vase #tulipiere #vase #flowervase #tulips #tulipvase #flowerarranging #flowers #bouquet

Where to Buy a Tulipiere:

If you’re looking for the most traditional variety, you’ll want Delftware or Delft pottery (also known as Delft Blue). These are made in Delft, Holland.

However, I’ve seen similar tulip vases sold in a variety of places. Throughout this post, I’ve linked the specific vases that I own. I’ve also shared a list of other options toward the end of this post.

My first recommendation is to visit the Heinen Delfts Blauw store on Etsy. (Be sure to note the available discount code below before ordering.) These tulipieres are my personal favorites. While I prefer the solid white varieties, the traditional blue and white ones are available too.

The three variety I have from Heinen Delfts Blauw are:

Looking for more Tulipieres you can purchase? Here are a few others I love:

What Flowers Can I Use in a Tulipiere?

While tulipieres were obviously designed for tulips, they can be used with other flower varieties as well. I personally prefer the look of a single bloom variety flower, but you can certainly have fun with it and use what you love.

Here is how I used one of the  Heinen Delfts Blauw tulipieres to style a variety of flowers and blooms. There’s not a tulip in sight and yet I think it looks lovely!

Tulipiere - Flower Vase / Tulip Vase #tulipiere #vase #flowervase #tulips #tulipvase #flowerarranging #flowers #bouquet

How to Use a Tulipiere:

It’s really very simple to use a tulipiere. Begin by filling the vase with water.

Then freshly cut the stems of your blooms and tuck them into the spouts.

It is a personal preference, but I like to keep my stems pretty short. The smaller the vase the shorter the stem is my rule of thumb. However, I have seen these styled with long tulip stems for a more wild look. Do what pleases your eye!

Tulipiere - Flower Vase / Tulip Vase #tulipiere #vase #flowervase #tulips #tulipvase #flowerarranging #flowers #bouquet

You can reference some of the photos I’ve shared in this post for examples of how I like to style my floral arrangements.

Depending on the thickness of your stem and opening of the spout, you can typically fit 1-2 stems per spout. When it comes to tulips, which have a thicker stem, all you really need is one per spout. However, I personally like a fuller look so I will often tuck two into a few of the spouts.

Tulipiere - Flower Vase / Tulip Vase #tulipiere #vase #flowervase #tulips #tulipvase #flowerarranging #flowers #bouquet

As with any fresh-cut flowers, I recommend changing the water and recutting the stems every other day. This will give your arrangement the longest life.

With very few styling skills required, it’s a really simple way to get a beautiful flower arrangement.

I hope you learned something new today or just have a new appreciation for these beautiful and functional pieces of pottery.

Ideas for Beautiful Home Decor Collections #home #decor #homedecor #collections #collecting #vintage #vintagefinds #antiques

Do you have a collection you love, but aren’t sure what to do with it or how to display it in your home? In this post, I’m going to share several ideas on how to display a collection. With several collections of my own, I’ll also share some pictures along the way to get your ideas flowing.

Welcome back to my Inspired by Charm little mini-series about starting, displaying, and loving your home decor collection. This is the second post in the series. In my previous post, I shared ideas for starting a collection. It’s packed with a ton of great information. You can find that here if you missed it.

Inspired by Charm’s Home Decor Collection Mini Series:

With that information covered, assuming you’re ready to start a collection or maybe have already begun forming a collection but not quite sure what to do with it, I’m goining to help you with the presentation today. I have several ideas for you on how to display a collection.

How to Display A Home Decor Collection #homedecor #collection #collecting #vintagecollection #vintage finds #decorating

I think it’s really important to find a display and storage solution that works best for you. In the past, I’ve felt a little bogged down or stressed by my collections. However, now that I have set some parameters, know exactly what I want, and have set spaces for each of them, I am able to enjoy them without the stress.

Whether you prefer a more minimalist or maximalist esthetic, I have an approach or two that should work for YOU!

With that being said, let’s get into it!

How to Display a Collection

1. All Together

The most obvious way to display your collection is to put everything together. For example, if you collect ironstone serving dishes, bowls, and platters, they would create a beautiful look when displayed all together in a hutch or cabinet in your dining room or kitchen. Do you have a collection of picnic baskets? They would look cute stacked from largest to smallest in a little corner of your home.

Starting A Home Decor Collection #homedecor #collection #collecting #vintagecollection #vintage finds #decorating

Having a beautiful large collection display can make a really cohesive and impactful statement in your home.

As I mentioned in my previous post, it’s really important to set some parameters for your collection. In this way, you’ll know when enough is enough. For example, do you want your stack of picnic baskets to reach the top of your sofa or are you going dramatic and want them floor to ceiling?

For a more personal example, I’ve started a gallery wall going up the wall along my staircase. While I want to fill the entire wall from the bottom to the top of the stairs, I also want to keep this art collection contained within somewhat of a defined area. Once I fill in this area and reach the top of the stairs, my collection will end.

2. Limited Pieces

As much as we love our collections, there are instances where everything can’t be displayed. Whether you simply don’t have the room or just want to avoid excess clutter, a collection can still be possible if you limit its size.

For example, I unintentionally started collecting vintage salt and pepper shakers. I had no intentions of starting this collection, but a couple of years ago I found this adorable set of vintage-looking football player salt and pepper shakers while antiquing. They looked adorable in this particular spot in my butler’s pantry. While they could have looked lovely all year long, I prefer to switch things up seasonally, so I needed to find something for winter … and then for Christmas … and then for spring … and so on. Now I have a collection of about 6-8 sets of salt and pepper shakers! But, this is one of those collections I don’t display all at once. Only one piece of the collection is out at one time and the rest are tucked away in storage until their appropriate season.

Simple Fall Decorating Ideas for the Kitchen #fall #decor #decorating #kitchen #ideas #autumn

New Vintage Finds from my Antiquing Adventures #vintagefind #antiques #decorating #decor #antiquedecor #vintage #antiquing

Also, if you are tight on space but really want a collection, you can limit your display to 3-5 (or however many pieces your space allows). For example, I have a small rolling pin collection in my kitchen. I’ve limited that collection to what fits in a large crock under my kitchen work table. Since that is full, my collection is complete.

3. Seasonally

As I mentioned above, I’m a big fan of seasonal decorating, especially at Christmas. As you might guess, I have a few collections that just come out at certain times of the year. I suppose this is similar to my salt and pepper shakers, but these are collections with multiple pieces.

I love the idea of a seasonal collection as you get to enjoy them at specific times of the year. It becomes somewhat of a tradition to bring them out and set them up. Some of my Christmas collections are my personal favorites.

Festive Ideas and Inspiration for Living Room Christmas Decor #christmas #holiday #decor #decorating #ideas #livingroom #mantel #christmastree

Christmas In my Bulters Pantry #kitchen #christmas #decor #holiday #pantry #decorating #santamugs

Again, if your seasonal collection starts to feel a bit overwhelming and more of a daunting task rather than a joyous tradition, you may want to start limiting the collection or only displaying the pieces you really love.

Starting A Home Decor Collection #homedecor #collection #collecting #vintagecollection #vintage finds #decorating

One of my favorite seasonal collections is my herd of plastic deer. This collection began when I inherited three of them from my grandparents. These deer seem to be somewhat rare so the collection grows slowly, but I do pick them up whenever I see them on my antiquing adventures. I have a few other Christmas collections I’ll be sharing with you in my next post in this mini-series.

4. Throughout Your Home

If you don’t like the look of a mass collection displayed all in one area, you can spread that collection throughout your home.

For example, maybe you love collecting unique indoor plants. This would be a fabulous collection to spread around your home. Consequently, each room could get a touch of greenery and each plant can get the ideal light needed to grow its best.

Incorporating New Indoor Plants - Home Decor with Plants #plant #decor #decorating #plants #pothos #myrtle #pilea

I’m not sure this counts as a collection, but one thing I collect that I have spread around my house is books. In some instances I have them sorted out by use. For example, all of my art books are near my art table. All of my gardening books are in my office, etc. I’ve also distributed some of my book collection by color. In my living room, I used mostly blue, black, and green books to match my decor. While this might not seem particularly organized to you, it works really well for me.

New Vintage Finds from my Antiquing Adventures #vintagefind #antiques #decorating #decor #antiquedecor #vintage #antiquing

As you saw above, I have a collection of small brass animals. This would be another fun idea to spread out throughout your home. You could have one in each room. It could also be a fun little game to see if your guests notice or can find the brass animal in each room. Have fun with it!

5. Functional

Last but not least, collections can be displayed or stored for functionality.

For example, if you’ve been following IBC for some time, you might know that I love my specialty cake pans. From beehives to houses and even a skull (you can see them all HERE), I love using these pans when I need a unique and festive cake. I have this collection for functional purposes rather than something I want on display. I have a dedicated tote in my basement storage area where I keep all of these pans organized. Once this tote is full, my collection needs to stop. The other choice would be to donate an older pan, that I no longer use, to a charity so I would then have room in my tote to add a new pan.

Other examples of functional collections could be paintbrushes if you’re an artist, makeup if you enjoy trying different looks, DVDs if you love the art of movie-making, etc.

Determine what storage solution works best for you. While you may want to display some of these items, like paintbrushes if you’re an artist, there are other items, like DVDs, that you may want to keep in a cabinet. This will help cut down on the visual clutter, while still making them easily accessible. Decide what works best for you and what brings you the most joy in your home.

Dense, flavorful, and moist, this classic Lemon Pound Cake recipe is one you’ll turn to again and again. Drizzled with a tangy lemon glaze, it can be served for breakfast, an after-dinner dessert, or anything in between.

Lemon Pound Cake

Yes my friends, bust out your baking dishes, whisks, and fresh lemons because today we are making a fabulous Lemon Pound Cake!

Delicious Lemon Pound Cake Recipe #lemon #poundcake #recipe #quickbread #dessert #cake #easter #spring

For some reason, I’m always craving lemon recipes in the spring. In fact, I enjoy lemon recipes so much that I have an entire blog post dedicated to 14+ of my favorite lemon recipes. You can find that HERE if you’re a lemon lover too.

Recently I spent the day in my kitchen whipping up some new spring treats and this Lemon Pound Cake was one of the recipes on that list. I don’t want to compare it to the popular Starbucks lemon pound cake, but it’s really close. Let’s just say it’s better because it’s homemade.

As you know, I love specialty cake pans, so when I saw this adorable lemon-inspired loaf pan, I knew some delicious lemon quick bread needed to happen.

Delicious Lemon Pound Cake Recipe #lemon #poundcake #recipe #quickbread #dessert #cake #easter #spring

Speaking of specialty cake pans, I’m kind of an expert with them. I’ve made gingerbread houses, a beehive, individual shortcakes, and even a chocolate skull cake. I put together an entire blog post with all of my creations HERE. They are pretty special.

How to Grease Speciality Cake Pans:

When I do use pans like these, I often get asked how to grease them properly so the cake will come out nicely and easily. I’m going to break it down for you into four simple steps.

1. Evenly spray the pan with a baking spray. The key is BAKING spray, not cooking spray. I recommend PAM Baking Spray or Baker’s Joy.
2. Use a pastry brush (I like this silicone type) to press the baking spray into all the nooks and crannies.
3. Sprinkle lightly with flour. Then, shake the flour all around the pan. Dump out any excess flour.
4. My final tip is to wait until the cake cools slightly before you try to remove it from the pan. It all depends on the size of the cake, but it’s typically a good 15-20 minutes.

That’s it! I hope that helps!

You can find the lemon cake pan I used for this recipe HERE.

Delicious Lemon Pound Cake Recipe #lemon #poundcake #recipe #quickbread #dessert #cake #easter #spring

Okay, now that we have all of the important details out of the way, let me show you how to make this Lemon Pound Cake.

How to Make Lemon Pound Cake:

Begin by preheating your oven to 325 degrees F.

Prepare your baking pan by spraying it with baking spray. Then, use a pastry brush to make sure all the nooks and crannies of the pan are coated with the spray. Set aside.

You can find the lemon cake pan I used for this recipe HERE.

With an electric mixer, cream together the cream cheese, butter, and sugar. Mix until light and fluffy. Add the eggs one at a time and beat to combine. For your convenience, there is a full ingredient list and detailed instructions on the printable recipe card below.

Delicious Lemon Pound Cake Recipe #lemon #poundcake #recipe #quickbread #dessert #cake #easter #spring

Next, add the zest and juice from one lemon along with the vanilla extract. Mix well. Add in the flour and salt and mix until just combined.

Add this mixture to your prepared baking pan and bake for 55-60 minutes or until a toothpick inserted near the center comes out clean.

Allow the loaf to cool in the pan for about 15 minutes. Then invert onto a cooling rack and remove from the pan. Allow the cake to completely cool before topping it with a confectioners’ sugar glaze.

To make the glaze, in a medium-sized bowl, start with the confectioners’ sugar. Then, add the half and half one tablespoon at a time to reach the desired consistency. Whisk to combine. Mix in the vanilla extract and optional food coloring.

Whisk well until the glaze is smooth and no sugar clumps are visible. Drizzle onto your cake with the whisk or a spoon.

Delicious Lemon Pound Cake Recipe #lemon #poundcake #recipe #quickbread #dessert #cake #easter #spring

Ta-da! Your delicious lemon pound cake is complete!

Now I know that whipping cream cheese into this recipe might sound a bit odd, but it’s the secret ingredient that adds creaminess, moisture, and a subtle tang that pairs perfectly with all that lemon goodness. Trust me on this one.

When you see things like sour cream, buttermilk, and cream cheese in a cake or bread recipe, you’ll know it’s going to be moist. (And I know a lot of people hate that word, but I love it because that’s exactly how I want recipes like this to be.)

Ironstone Flowering Bulb Planter #spring #planter #ironstone #bulb #daffodil #hyacinth #crocus #centerpiece #springdecor

Using flowering potted bulbs and vintage ironstone, create a beautiful Ironstone Flowering Bulb Planter to decorate your home for spring.

Ironstone Flowering Bulb Planter:

Don’t you love when beautiful and wonderful ideas form somewhat magically? I had no intention of creating this Ironstone Flowering Bulb Planter project, but then all the pieces serendipitously fell into place. It was meant to be!

Last year, around this time I picked up some potted flowering bulbs at Lowe’s. They came in 4-inch plastic pots and each pot had 3-4 bulbs. (Options included tulips, daffodils, hyacinths, and crocuses*.) I turned them into a beautiful spring centerpiece HERE and then used them again to create this garden-inspired spring tablescape HERE. Once they were done blooming, I planted them out in my landscaping.

*Update: I wanted to make a quick note that the crocus never bloomed for me. I’m not sure why, but I wanted to let you know. I would avoid using crocus for this project. As you will see in this post, the other varieties performed beautifully.

Ironstone Flowering Bulb Planter #spring #planter #ironstone #bulb #daffodil #hyacinth #crocus #centerpiece #springdecor

To my delight, a week ago I noticed the bulbs that I planted last year were coming up out of the ground. I was obsessed. (And if you follow me on Instagram, you got to see my delight firsthand.) I love that I was able to enjoy these flowers for several weeks indoors last year and now they will be blooming in my garden for years to come.

Once I saw them sprouting, I was reminded to head back to Lowe’s to pick up some more potted bulbs for another project this year. I didn’t have plans for them but knew I’d figure something out.

Flash forward to a few days ago when I visited one of my favorite local antique stores and found not one but three beautiful vintage ironstone pieces. (You can get a list of all my favorite Pittsburgh antique stores HERE.) I got two compotes and one terrine. Even at that moment, it didn’t hit me, but as soon as I got home, I knew what I had to do. These vintage ironstone pieces needed to become Ironstone Flowering Bulb Planters.

And that’s exactly what I did.

These are the results:

Ironstone Flowering Bulb Planter #spring #planter #ironstone #bulb #daffodil #hyacinth #crocus #centerpiece #springdecor

Aren’t they beautiful!? I couldn’t be more thrilled with how they came out.

As I’m writing and sharing this post, my flowers have not bloomed. However, once they do, I will snap some more photographs and update this post so you can see them in all their glory. *UPDATE* They’ve bloomed! New photos have been added to allow you to see them in their full glory. If you want to get an idea as to how they might look, check out this post HERE. As I mentioned above, I did a similar project last year using terra cotta pots. I used them to decorate a spring table when they were blooming. The results were lovely.

The process for putting together these planters is really simple. However, I did write down a quick tutorial for you and shared links to some of the products that I used.

Let’s get to it!

How To Create Ironstone Flowering Bulb Planter:

You will need:

Begin by lining your vessel with plastic wrap. To be honest, I’m not sure this step is necessary, but I wanted to protect my ironstone from possible staining from the soil. If there is no need to protect the finish of the interior of your vessel, you can skip this step.

Ironstone Flowering Bulb Planter #spring #planter #ironstone #bulb #daffodil #hyacinth #crocus #centerpiece #springdecor

Next, add soil to your vessel, and then pot your bulbs. While the bulbs are pretty hardy, avoid breaking the roots.

Ironstone Flowering Bulb Planter #spring #planter #ironstone #bulb #daffodil #hyacinth #crocus #centerpiece #springdecor

Fill in around the bulbs as needed with additional soil.

Cover the top of the soil with various moss. I used sphagnum moss, sheet moss, and reindeer moss.

Ironstone Flowering Bulb Planter #spring #planter #ironstone #bulb #daffodil #hyacinth #crocus #centerpiece #springdecor

Add additional natural decor to the top of your planter like a small piece of bark, dry twigs, pebbles, etc.

Finally, give your bulbs a good initial watering and water again in the days ahead as needed. If your container has no drainage holes like mine, be careful to not overwater.

Voila! Your Ironstone Flowering Bulb Planter is complete!

Ironstone Flowering Bulb Planter #spring #planter #ironstone #bulb #daffodil #hyacinth #crocus #centerpiece #springdecor

And don’t forget the final step. Once your bulbs are done flowering, plant them outside so you can enjoy them again, year after year.

Ironstone Flowering Bulb Planter #spring #planter #ironstone #bulb #daffodil #hyacinth #crocus #centerpiece #springdecor

As you can see, I’ve placed my ironstone planters all around my house to snap a few photos. They look lovely as a centerpiece, styled on your coffee table, or placed on a bookcase shelf. You could even create smaller versions with a single flowering bulb for your nightstand or powder room. The options are only limited by your styling creativity.

These adorable, delicious, and unique mini cakes, that are shaped liked garden vegetables, are a delightful treat for spring and summer entertaining.

Vegetable Garden Mini Cakes

Earlier this week I spent a day in the kitchen working on some new spring recipes to share with you. One of the items on my recipe list was these adorable mini cakes. I had a feeling they were going to turn out cute, but I never expected them to look this good.

Vegetable Garden Mini Cakes #minicakes #cake #spring #summer #dessert #garden #petitfours #recipe #dessert #mini

Vegetable Garden Mini Cakes #minicakes #cake #spring #summer #dessert #garden #petitfours #recipe #dessert #mini

While these mini cakes do take some time to make (the decorating takes the most time), they are really easy. I’m hoping that this post and the printable recipe below will make them even easier for you.

What makes these mini cakes so easy to make is that I used a specialty cake baking pan designed to bake mini cakes in the shape of beloved garden vegetables. (You can purchase the pan HERE.)

Vegetable Garden Mini Cakes #minicakes #cake #spring #summer #dessert #garden #petitfours #recipe #dessert #mini

If you’re familiar with my recipes, you’ll know that I adore these specialty cake pans. I’ve made gingerbread houses, a beehive, individual shortcakes, and even a chocolate skull cake. I put together an entire blog post with all of my creations HERE. They are pretty special.

When I stumbled upon this pan, I knew I had to give these a try and I’m so glad I did.

Vegetable Garden Mini Cakes #minicakes #cake #spring #summer #dessert #garden #petitfours #recipe #dessert #mini

Vegetable Garden Mini Cakes #minicakes #cake #spring #summer #dessert #garden #petitfours #recipe #dessert #mini

I used a brown sugar carrot cake batter to make these mini cakes. It’s very similar to the recipe that is provided with the baking pan, but with a few changes that make it even more delicious. I also added on a confectioners’ sugar glaze in coordinating vegetable colors to really bring the mini cakes to life.

With that being said, let me walk you through the recipe and share tips for styling these sweet little cakes.

Vegetable Garden Mini Cakes #minicakes #cake #spring #summer #dessert #garden #petitfours #recipe #dessert #mini

How to Make Mini Cakes:

Begin by preheating your oven to 350 degrees F.

Prepare your baking pan by spraying it with baking spray. Then, use a pastry brush to make sure all the nooks and crannies of the pan are coated with the spray. Set aside.

In the bowl of a stand mixer, cream together the brown sugar and butter. Add the eggs and vanilla and beat again until smooth.

In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, cinnamon, and salt. Add half of this mixture to your sugar and butter mixture. Start to combine for a few seconds, and then add in your buttermilk. Combine for a few more seconds and then add in the rest of your flour mixture. Finally, add in the finely shredded carrots and mix until just combined.

Vegetable Garden Mini Cakes #minicakes #cake #spring #summer #dessert #garden #petitfours #recipe #dessert #mini

Use a teaspoon to fill each cavity 3/4 full of batter. Do not overfill. Lightly bang pan on counter to level the batter.

Vegetable Garden Mini Cakes #minicakes #cake #spring #summer #dessert #garden #petitfours #recipe #dessert #mini

Vegetable Garden Mini Cakes #minicakes #cake #spring #summer #dessert #garden #petitfours #recipe #dessert #mini

Bake for 14-16 minutes or until the center is set and the edges begin to brown. Allow the cakes to cool in the pan for 5-8 minutes before inverting onto a cooling rack. Clean your pan and repeat with the remaining batter.

Next, prepare your glaze. In a medium-sized bowl, start with the confectioners’ sugar. Then, add the half and half one tablespoon at a time to reach the desired consistency. Whisk to combine. Mix in the vanilla extract and optional food coloring.

Whisk well until the glaze is smooth and no sugar clumps are visible. Drizzle onto your cake with the whisk, a spoon, or a piping bag.

I dyed the glaze in various colors using my favorite food dye which you can find HERE. I added the dye to piping bags which I found to be the easiest method for applying the glaze.

Once your cakes have cooled, use a pastry bag to drizzle each cake with the confectioners’ sugar glaze.

Vegetable Garden Mini Cakes #minicakes #cake #spring #summer #dessert #garden #petitfours #recipe #dessert #mini

Vegetable Garden Mini Cakes #minicakes #cake #spring #summer #dessert #garden #petitfours #recipe #dessert #mini

I suggest adding some wax or parchment paper to your counter first, and then pipe onto the cakes while they are still on the cooling rack. The wax paper will catch any drips making clean-up really simple.

To present these mini cakes I used two different methods, For both methods, I used some crushed chocolate graham crackers as “dirt.” With the first method, I simply baked a boxed brownie mix, then added a thin layer of the “dirt”, and after that, I placed the mini cakes on top to complete the look. If I was to do it again, I’d likely add a layer of frosting between the brownies and “dirt” to provide a little added moisture.

Vegetable Garden Mini Cakes #minicakes #cake #spring #summer #dessert #garden #petitfours #recipe #dessert #mini

With the second method, I skipped the brownies and just added some of the crushed chocolate graham crackers to a serving dish and placed the mini cakes on top of that.

Both look super cute. It’s a winner either way.

Vegetable Garden Mini Cakes #minicakes #cake #spring #summer #dessert #garden #petitfours #recipe #dessert #mini

And with that, my adorable garden vegetable mini cakes are ready for their big debut. Grab a shovel and rake and dig in!

Looking for more mini dessert recipes? Try these:

As you can see in some of my photos, I also made another specialty cake. It’s a wonderful Lemon Pound Cake. I’ll be sharing that recipe with you soon! Stay tuned!

I hope you love this mini cake recipe as much as I enjoyed making it. Happy Baking!

New Vintage Finds from my Antiquing Adventures #vintagefind #antiques #decorating #decor #antiquedecor #vintage #antiquing

I’m excited to share some new vintage finds from my antiquing adventures. See what I found and how I used these treasures in my home!

If you regularly follow Inspired by Charm, you might know that one of my favorite hobbies is visiting antique stores to hunt for vintage finds to use in decorating my home. In addition to enjoying “the hunt,” I also love to share my latest finds with you. I do this for several reasons:

  1. It’s always fun to see what treasures other people are finding.
  2. I hope my finds inspire you to add vintage decor to your home.
  3. I want to share ideas and inspiration on what you can look for on your antiquing adventures.

Over the past month or so, I’ve been hitting up all of my favorite local antique stores. (If you’re in, near, or visiting the Pittsburgh area, I’ve shared a full list of my favorite places HERE.) I usually get the urge to antique and thrift whenever a new season is on the horizon. Typically, I’m able to find some beautiful, new-to-me items to switch up my decor.

With that said, I thought it would be fun to put together a blog post sharing some of my latest finds and show you how I incorporated them into my decor. I’ve actually found lots of new treasures so I may even need to make this post a two-parter!

New Vintage Finds from my Antiquing Adventures

1. Staircase Gallery Wall Art
As you might have noticed when I shared my entryway decor at Christmas, I’ve started to assemble a little gallery wall going up the wall next to my staircase. I had been picking up vintage art pieces whenever I found something I liked, but I wasn’t quite sure what to do with them. Then, inspiration struck and I decided to do this fun gallery wall going up my stairs.

Starting A Home Decor Collection #homedecor #collection #collecting #vintagecollection #vintage finds #decorating

While I’m not limiting myself to strictly vintage pieces, that happens to be where I’ve been finding much of the artwork. If you look around, you can often find great prices on vintage artwork. And with a variety of styles available, you’re certain to find something to match your esthetic.

New Vintage Finds from my Antiquing Adventures #vintagefind #antiques #decorating #decor #antiquedecor #vintage #antiquing

I have yet to hang all of my new pieces as I like to have a grouping of 5-6 pieces before adding more to my gallery wall. Some of my new finds include these framed beagle prize ribbons and this stunning watercolor.

2. Vintage Salvage Pieces
I’ve always had a love for salvage architectural pieces. I recently found three different pieces I really like. I hung one piece in my office, another in my entryway, and the third in my kitchen.

New Vintage Finds from my Antiquing Adventures #vintagefind #antiques #decorating #decor #antiquedecor #vintage #antiquingNew Vintage Finds from my Antiquing Adventures #vintagefind #antiques #decorating #decor #antiquedecor #vintage #antiquing

I hung the first two pieces above existing artwork. Before adding these salvaged pieces, the art felt a little lost and lonely. These extra pieces were the perfect finishing touch and they helped to better fill the spaces.

New Vintage Finds from my Antiquing Adventures #vintagefind #antiques #decorating #decor #antiquedecor #vintage #antiquing]New Vintage Finds from my Antiquing Adventures #vintagefind #antiques #decorating #decor #antiquedecor #vintage #antiquing

The third piece I hung in my kitchen. I have a corner in my kitchen where there are four different openings/doors so there are a couple of very small wall spaces. This piece fit perfectly between the opening to my family room and butler’s pantry.

New Vintage Finds from my Antiquing Adventures #vintagefind #antiques #decorating #decor #antiquedecor #vintage #antiquing

The color of the piece is very similar to the wall and trim so I may eventually paint it, but even as it is, I think it adds a little something special to this space.

3. Brass Snail & Brass Bunny
For years now I’ve had a minor obsession with anything brass. While my obsession has mellowed out slightly, there are still pieces I just can’t resist, especially small brass animals.

New Vintage Finds from my Antiquing Adventures #vintagefind #antiques #decorating #decor #antiquedecor #vintage #antiquing

As you might have seen in some of my other recent posts, I have assembled a little brass animal collection on my living room bookcases. I even put a few of them under some glass cloches to make them feel extra special. The new additions to my little collection are a brass snail and an additional brass bunny. I’m especially fond of the snail.

Speaking of collections, if you have any interest in starting your own home decor collection or want to read more about mine, I started a new series here on IBC that is all about collections. You can find the start of that series HERE. And be sure to sign-up for the Inspired by Charm Mailing List so you don’t miss future posts in the series.

4. Bunny Salt & Pepper
I’ve also expanded another one of my collections. In my butler’s pantry, I have a little spot reserved for seasonal salt and pepper shakers. If you’ve been following along for the past couple of years you may remember seeing a few of my seasonal salt and pepper shakers including some vintage football players (my personal favorite), a pair of birds, Mr. & Mrs. Claus, and a set of winter pine trees.

I didn’t have a set for spring, so when I saw this bunny pair I knew they would be perfect. I love their look and the colors work wonderfully in this space.

5. Secretary Desk and Stool
One of my biggest purchases was this secretary desk and stool. I’ve been hunting for a secretary desk for over a year now and when I saw this one pop up on Facebook Marketplace I knew I had found a winner.

New Vintage Finds from my Antiquing Adventures #vintagefind #antiques #decorating #decor #antiquedecor #vintage #antiquing

It’s pretty old and much of it is assembled with tongue and groove and wooden pegs. In general, it’s perfect, but I’m not the biggest fan of its color and sheen. It’s a bit too orange and shiny. I think that when the weather starts to warm up, I’m going to try and refinish this piece to give it a look that better suits my home and style.

The desk didn’t come with a stool. I happened upon the stool about a month later. It suits the desk well. In fact, the color and finish of the stool are what I’m hoping to achieve on the desk.

6. Glass Rolling Pin
And finally, I added another rolling pin to my glass rolling pin collection. My grandma had a glass rolling pin (which my mom has now) and I always admired it. This particular style is pretty hard to find. A couple of years ago, my mom found one for me and the collection has been growing ever since. In addition to some wood rolling pins that I’ve collected, I now have three of these glass rolling pins.

One of the glass rolling pins is displayed with my rolling pin collection, another sits on the counter in my butler’s pantry, and my newest addition came with some cording so I hung it on a rack in my kitchen. The wood tones of the rack match the rolling pin perfectly. It was meant to be!

Vintage Decor Ideas

A collection of similar items can be a great way to decorate a space in your home. In this post, I’m sharing my tips and tricks on how to start a home decor collection.

Starting a Home Decor Collection

This past weekend I did a little antique shopping and while I was perusing the aisles for some of my favorite antique finds, I was thinking about a few of the home decor collections I have in my home and thought it would make a great series here on the blog.

As I began to write this post, so many new thoughts worth sharing kept popping into my head. I quickly realized, that with all I wanted to say and share, this topic was going to require more than one post. So, I’m thinking this will end up being a three-part series over a few weeks. Here’s what that will look like:

  1. In this post I’ll share some ideas for starting a home decor collection. (You are here.)
  2. Then I will give you some ideas for how to beautifully display your collections.
  3. Finally, I will show you all of my special collections. (Coming soon!)

Updated to Add: This mini series is complete. You can find all the posts below.

Inspired by Charm’s Home Decor Collection Mini Series:

Sound fun? I sure hope so. I enjoy my collections for so many reasons, and I think you will too. I love the thrill of the hunt, I love how they look displayed in my home, and I love showing them off to visitors, guests, and friends.

If you’re looking for a creative way to decorate your space and want to start a collection of your own, then this new series is just for you! Let’s get into it.

How to Start a Home Decor Collection

1. Find Something You Love

I think the key to a really great collection is choosing an item that you personally enjoy. As I scroll through social media, I’ve seen a lot of the same collections. While it’s possible that everyone likes the same thing, my assumption is that people started collecting things because someone else did and it snowballed from there.

My recommendation is that you find something that YOU really love. Collect something that interests you, that excites you, or that makes your heart smile. The more unique, the better. These are the collections that will bring you the most joy and will end up being something you keep for a lifetime rather than a collection that winds up at the thrift store because it was just a trend. (Know that I say this with zero judgment; I’ve been there too!)

2. Try Something Quirky

In my opinion, some of the best collections are things that are a bit different or quirky. Think outside of the box. In a future post, I’m going to share some of the things I collect. While I hope my collections spark some ideas for you, remember that your collection doesn’t have to be like mine or someone else’s to be special.

As I mentioned above, choose something that you’ll love to hunt for. Choose something that will bring you joy every time you see it as you walk into your home.

Another benefit to choosing something that is quirky and unique is that not everyone will be searching for the same item so the price may be lower. Some of my favorite collections are antique items and over the years, as certain items became more popular, I found that the prices started to skyrocket and things became harder to find. There have been a couple of collections I had to stop just because I didn’t want to pay the inflated prices.

Starting A Home Decor Collection #homedecor #collection #collecting #vintagecollection #vintage finds #decorating

3. Set Some Parameters

Collections can quickly spiral out of control if you’re not careful. When I’m thinking about my own collections, I like to set up some boundaries. I learned this the hard way because there was a time or two I started a collection while perusing eBay and when all of the packages started to arrive I was filled with regret. It was impulse shopping. I wish I would have had some parameters in place back then.

Some questions to ask yourself:

  •  Is there a certain size, style, shape, material, age, etc. that I want to limit my collection to?
  • Do I only want to shop in person or can I search online?
  • How many pieces are the max for my collection?
  • What will I do with pieces of my collection that no longer fit or I no longer love?
  • Where will I store or display my collection?
  • Is this collection bringing me joy or causing me stress?
  • Do I want new items or vintage finds?

As you can imagine, this list could go on and on. I just recommend you think things through before starting in order to avoid any buyer’s remorse.

Starting A Home Decor Collection #homedecor #collection #collecting #vintagecollection #vintage finds #decorating

4. Think Practical
If you are tight on space or tend to be more of a minimalist with your home decor, think about collections that are practical or functional. For example, you could collect vintage clothing or jewelry that you could wear. You could collect vintage baking dishes and tools that you’re able to use in the kitchen.

Practical could also mean collecting a certain style of art to decorate your walls or vases to display flowers and cuttings from your yard.

Also, this is your collection so you can determine how many items are in it. You can collect 5 of something or 100. Again, be realistic, practical, and honest with yourself. No matter what size space you call home, you can have a collection too.

Starting A Home Decor Collection #homedecor #collection #collecting #vintagecollection #vintage finds #decorating

5. Start Shopping
With all of those things in mind, you’re ready to start shopping.

I’ve built a collection overnight (thank you online shopping) and I’ve been building other collections for 10+ years. While there’s no right or wrong way, I’ve found that taking my time to build a collection is much more rewarding and typically leads to better results in the end. You may feel the pressure to build your collection as quickly as possible, but I say take it slow. You can enjoy a collection when it’s a just few pieces as much as you can when you have twelve items in it.

Depending on what your collection is, do some research as to where you might shop. Will you be looking at antique stores, thrift shops, home decorating stores, or even your own backyard? Is your collection going to be pieces you only buy while you’re traveling or are they going to be homemade items that you create yourself?

For me, shopping is one of the best parts of building a collection, so be sure to have fun with this part.

Funfetti Coffee Cake | #funfetti #coffeecake #cake #recipe #dessert #brunch #breakfast

This Funfetti Coffee Cake is a classic coffee cake recipe updated with colorful sprinkles making it the perfect dessert for a celebration.

Funfetti Coffee Cake | inspiredbycharm.com

Funfetti Coffee Cake:

I’m one of those people who thinks everything tastes better with sprinkles, which is why I created this Funfetti Coffee Cake recipe. When it comes to picking out donuts, cupcakes, ice cream, or any other sweet treat, I’m immediately drawn to anything with sprinkles. I’d like to think it says something about my personality, but I suspect it means I’m addicted to sugar.

Funfetti Coffee Cake | inspiredbycharm.com

I don’t know if sprinkles add flavor, but I certainly seem to enjoy treats that have them.

In my search for delicious Funfetti desserts, I did notice one thing missing from the group of funfetti treats: a fabulous recipe for Funfetti Coffee Cake. And as quickly as that idea came into my brain, I was in the kitchen whipping up this festive coffee cake.

Funfetti Coffee Cake | inspiredbycharm.com

Funfetti Coffee Cake | inspiredbycharm.com

How do you make Funfetti Coffee Cake:

Because Ina Garten is my cooking queen, I used her coffee cake recipe as a base for my recipe. I’ve made this recipe before, and it’s one of my favorites, so I figured that was a good place to start.

Begin by preheating your oven to 350 degrees F. Grease and flour a bundt pan. (Alternatively you can use a 10-inch tube pan or a 13×9-inch pan.) Set aside.

In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, cream the butter and sugar until light (about 4-5 minutes). For your convenience, there is a full ingredient list and detailed instructions in the printable recipe card below.

Add the eggs one at a time, then add the vanilla and sour cream. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. With the mixer on low, add the flour mixture to the batter until just combined. Then, with a spatula, gently fold in the sprinkles.

Funfetti Coffee Cake | inspiredbycharm.com

Next, prepare the streusel. Place the brown sugar, flour, cinnamon, salt, and butter in a bowl. With your fingers, pinch the mixture together until it forms a crumble.

Into your prepared pan, spoon in half of the batter and level with a spatula. Then, sprinkle with 3/4 of the streusel mixture. (Only use 1/2 if you plan to have your crumb layer be on the top of your finished cake.) Spoon the rest of the batter into the pan, evenly spread it out, and top with the remaining streusel. Bake for 50-60 minutes or until a toothpick inserted near the center comes out clean.

Funfetti Coffee Cake | inspiredbycharm.com

Allow the cake to cool on a wire rack for about 30 minutes. Then, remove the cake from the pan and place on a serving plate. Allow the cake to cool.

Funfetti Coffee Cake | inspiredbycharm.com

Funfetti Coffee Cake | inspiredbycharm.com

In the meantime, prepare the funfetti glaze. In a bowl, whisk together the confectioner’s sugar, melted butter, vanilla, salt and milk. You’ll want the glaze to be as thick as possible while still being a bit runny. If it’s too runny, add more confectioners sugar; if it’s too thick, add more milk.

Funfetti Coffee Cake | inspiredbycharm.com

Once the cake has cooled (It can still be slightly warm.), drizzle as much of the glaze over the cake as you’d like. Then, add more sprinkles before the glaze has set.

Slice and serve.

Funfetti Coffee Cake | inspiredbycharm.com

Traditional coffee cakes like this are made in a tube-style (angel food cake) pan. Not only does this create an interesting shape, but it allows for that beautiful crumb coat to be visible on top.

I did’t have a tube pan so I improvised with this gorgeous bundt pan. (affliate link) However, as a result. my crumb coat was on the bottom. Which honestly doesn’t bother me in the slightest. In fact, it reminds me of a cloud, and clouds and funfetti go together like peanut butter and jelly. (In case non-traditional upside-down cakes drive you bananas, you’ve been warned.)

Funfetti Coffee Cake | inspiredbycharm.com

One other thing to note: I found that sprinkles like these, or the cylindrical variety, work best for funfetti. Most of these are the same color throughout. The round sprinkles (nonpareils) are typically color coated, and they tend to bleed when they come in contact with liquid which does not result in the best funfetti effect. Although I’ve seen both used, I’m just letting you know my personal preference.

With all of that out of the way, I think we are ready to bake up some fun!

Funfetti Coffee Cake | inspiredbycharm.com

Coffee cake just got a whole like more fun. And, let’s be honest, a lot cuter, too.

Funfetti Coffee Cake | inspiredbycharm.com

Funfetti Coffee Cake | inspiredbycharm.com

This cake is delicious on its own (without the glaze), but the glaze makes the whole thing come together. You can add as much or as little as you’d like. Glaze and I are BFFs so naturally I used all of it. So much so that it pooled on my cake stand, but I’m totally okay with that.

You’ll notice that some of the cinnamon sugar streusel will fall off the bottom as you glaze. At first I was annoyed because it was getting into my glaze, but then I chose to embrace it, and enjoy how it gives a sneak peak as to what’s inside.

Funfetti Coffee Cake | inspiredbycharm.com

Funfetti Coffee Cake | inspiredbycharm.com

So friends, the lesson for today is that sprinkles really do make everything better. (Puddles of funfetti glaze don’t hurt either.) So next time you’re in charge of baking up something sweet, give this Funfetti Coffee Cake a try.

How to Become an Artist: A Novice's Guide #art #artist #watercolor #oilpainting #gouache #beginner #novice #artclass

Interested in drawing or painting? Wondering How to Become an Artist? I’m hoping I can help. I’m excited to share my adventures of rediscovering my love of art and sharing my advice on how to be an artist.

How to Become an Artist: A Novice's Guide #art #artist #watercolor #oilpainting #gouache #beginner #novice #artclass

How to Become an Artist:

If you’ve been following me on Instagram, you won’t be surprised to see this post. If you’re just following Inspired by Charm here or are new to the blog (welcome, by the way), then this discussion of my artistic journey might be new to you. Either way, if you have an interest in art, drawing, painting, or just curious about my process, then this post is for you.

Part of me feels a little premature in writing a post titled “How to Become an Artist” because I honestly don’t have the answer for you yet nor am I technically an artist. However, a big part of this blog is taking you along with me on my adventures. Every adventure needs a starting point, as rough as it may be, so I thought this would be the perfect place to start.

If you’re looking for more posts in this art series, check out these:

How to Become an Artist: A Novice's Guide #art #artist #watercolor #oilpainting #gouache #beginner #novice #artclass

I have always had an interest in art, drawing, and painting. I took as many art classes as I could in high school and even a few in college. More recently I’ve taken some local community art courses–one for watercolor and one for oil painting. Am I any good? I suppose that’s subjective, but I’d like to think I have some God-given abilities. You see, my mom and both of my brothers were / still are very talented artists. My brothers don’t practice much anymore, but my Mom has been diving back into the arts.

As I’ve started practicing again, I’ve created some pieces which I like and some that I feel could use some work. I’ve included a few photos from my sketchbook as part of this post so you can have an idea of what I’m creating. None of these are official pieces of artwork. Rather, they are merely studies as I try to determine the direction and style I want to explore in my artwork.

How to Become an Artist: A Novice's Guide #art #artist #watercolor #oilpainting #gouache #beginner #novice #artclass

So you may be asking, “What is the purpose of this post?” Well, as I dove back into my art practice I’ve learned a few lessons along the way that I thought might be helpful for anyone looking to build an art practice. Also, as I’ve been sharing some of my work and studies on Instagram I’ve received dozens of questions about how I got started, if I’m taking classes, etc. I’ve also heard from a lot of you that want to dabble in art, but aren’t sure where to start.

I’m just a novice myself, but I hope what I’ve learned so far will help you on your journey. Let’s get into it.

How to Be an Artist:

Practice, study, and practice some more.

We’ve all heard the saying “Practice makes perfect,” and that couldn’t be more true.

Even if you “don’t know how to draw/paint,” you can start by just drawing basic shapes like lines, circles, squares, doodles, etc. Just the practice of moving your hand, wrist, arm, and connecting that with your brain will make a huge difference.

When I started back up with my art process and went to draw a circle, it felt really weird. It was almost like I forgot how to do it so I just spent time drawing and doodling. The goal wasn’t to create a piece of art, it was just to get my hand and brain working on movement again.

How to Become an Artist: A Novice's Guide #art #artist #watercolor #oilpainting #gouache #beginner #novice #artclass

If you’re really new to drawing, you can also start by tracing. While you’re obviously copying someone’s work, this technique is done to make the connection between your hand and your brain.

The more you practice, the more these movements and gestures become second nature for your hand and brain. With enough practice, you’ll be able to create lines, shapes, and brushstrokes without even thinking about them.

This might sound like fluff, but it’s really helpful. Once you’re feeling comfortable and ready to dive deeper, I recommend studying and learning from the greats and artists you admire.

How to Become an Artist: A Novice's Guide #art #artist #watercolor #oilpainting #gouache #beginner #novice #artclass

How to Get Started:

I know how overwhelming it can feel when you’re beginning something new. Where do you start?

STUDY:

While I have some basic art knowledge, I also had a lot to learn as I was getting back into my art. Yes, you can certainly just sit down and draw or paint, but if you want to grow, learn, gain new techniques, etc. it helps to learn from someone that has more experience. Below I’ve listed some of my favorite resources that I’ve been using over the past few months.

Skillshare:
If you’re looking for more structured lessons, Skillshare is an amazing resource and one of my personal favorites. There are thousands of classes and it only costs $9.99 a month. Not only can you learn art, but you can take courses on public speaking, photography, building confidence, graphic design, productivity, etc. If you put in the time and effort and take even one class a month, this is an amazing value. To me, this is more valuable than any other subscription you can buy. Plus, they also offer a free 14-day trial. It’s the best.

YouTube:
YouTube might be my favorite resource because it’s absolutely free and there are literally thousands of artists sharing a multitude of techniques and related items about art. Just head on over to YouTube and search for whatever skill, technique, or medium you want to study and I promise there will be dozens of videos. It’s an incredible library of resources and it doesn’t cost you a penny.

Instagram:
Another free resource is social media. Over the past few months, I’ve followed dozens of new artists on Instagram. Since the addition of Instagram stories, Reels, and IGTV, you can find some art tutorials on Instagram, but nothing like you would on YouTube. However, I do consider Instagram a great resource for inspiration and motivation. In addition, artists will share classes they’ve taken, tools they use, etc. I also found a couple of artists that offer classes themselves. I’ve even taken a few.

Local Classes:
Finally, as I mentioned above, I’ve taken some local classes right here in Pittsburgh. No matter where you are located, there are likely some art courses nearby. You can start by doing a quick Google search for your area. I also recommend checking out local colleges, museums, botanical gardens, art education centers, etc. In addition, you may want to find a Facebook group for your local community and ask for recommendations there. You may find individuals in your community that teach out of their home.

My watercolor class was at my area Adult Education Center, my oil painting class was at an independently run art school, and I even took a mosaic glass art class at the local botanical garden.

Books:
While not a go-to for me personally, art books are another great resource. Again, there are books on almost any art subject that you may be curious about. Just a reminder that you can save yourself some expense by going to a local library and borrowing books that you’re interested in. If you love the book and want it as a permanent resource, then you can make the investment and purchase it.

I do have a few art books that I really love and use when I need a quick reference. (I’ll be sure to share these in a future post.) However, my preferred learning method is video tutorials or in-person classes.

As you can see, there is an endless amount of resources available to you. Search out to find which one suits you’re learning style best and give it a go.

How to Become an Artist: A Novice's Guide #art #artist #watercolor #oilpainting #gouache #beginner #novice #artclass

GET SOME BASIC SUPPLIES:

On Instagram, I’ve gotten a lot of questions about paints, palettes, pens, tools, etc. As I’m diving deeper into my “How to Become an Artist” adventures I’m discovering products and tools that I love. As I continue to grow and learn I will be more than happy to share these things with you. In fact, I have a post HERE with all of My Favorite Art Supplies.

However, if you’re new to art, I would focus less on the tools and more on the practice. I say this from experience as I spent months buying “the best” art products and then never did anything with them. Being a person that loves to shop and buy supplies, this brought me joy but didn’t really help my ultimate goal of being an artist.

As I discovered wonderful artists through my studies, I was surprised at how many used somewhat basic art supplies. I’ve seen amazing drawings from ballpoint pens and highlighters. I even saw paintings done with tea and coffee! Get creative and use what you have.

Do “the best” art supplies make a difference? Yes, of course.

Do you need them to get started? Do you need them to be an artist? Absolutely not.

You don’t need a specific pen, pencil, paint, brush, fill-in-the-blank, to get started. Use what you have. A simple ballpoint pen and a notebook are enough for you to start drawing and learning. Start there.

And yes, I get it. Trust me. Buying and amassing art supplies is such a wonderful high. I can’t wait to share some of my favorite art supplies with you and tell you why I love them so much.

How to Become an Artist: A Novice's Guide #art #artist #watercolor #oilpainting #gouache #beginner #novice #artclass

Becoming an Artist: Final Thoughts:

If I could sum up this post in two words I would say: Just Start.
What is the first step to becoming an artist? Just start.

It really is that simple. And yes, I know how hard starting can seem. As I mentioned above, I waffled for months and stocked up on every art supply thinking that would make me an artist. Spoiler alert: it didn’t. It wasn’t until I put pen to paper (literally and figuratively) that the magic started to unfold.

So grab a piece of paper, and just start. You’ve got this.

Homemade Blueberry Cake:

Sometimes the simplest recipes are the most delicious. That’s certainly the case with this homemade Blueberry Cake.

This recipe reminds me of something my grandma would make. It’s one of those really simple recipes that you can just “throw together” when you have leftover blueberries or the neighbor down the road drops off some from their blueberry bush.

Speaking of blueberries, if you love blueberry based recipes, I have an entire post dedicated to My Best Blueberry Recipes. You can find that HERE.

How to Make Blueberry Cake:

Begin by preheating your oven to 350 degrees F. Spray an 8×8 inch (or equivalent) pan with baking spray. Set aside.

In a bowl, cream together the butter and 1/2 cup sugar. Add in the salt and vanilla, and mix again to combine.

For your convenience, there is a full ingredient list and detailed instructions in the printable recipe card below.

Next, separate the egg yolks from the egg whites. Reserve the whites. Add the egg yolks to the butter and sugar mixture. Beat to combine.

Bacon and Blue Cheese Potato Salad #potatosalad #sidedish #potato #bacon #bluecheese #salad #recipe

Move over classic potato salad; there’s a new dish in town. This Bacon and Blue Cheese Potato Salad is a fresh and flavorful take on the classic recipe. In fact, I’d take this over the classic recipe any day!

Bacon and Blue Cheese Potato Salad #potatosalad #sidedish #potato #bacon #bluecheese #salad #recipe

Over the past month, I’ve been doing some behind-the-scenes work to clean-up and organize the recipes and blog posts here on Inspired by Charm. One thing I noticed was that I didn’t have a good potato salad recipe. Why? Well, to be quite honest, I really don’t like potato salad. Well, that was until I made this Bacon and Blue Cheese Potato Salad.

Bacon and Blue Cheese Potato Salad #potatosalad #sidedish #potato #bacon #bluecheese #salad #recipe
Bacon and Blue Cheese Potato Salad #potatosalad #sidedish #potato #bacon #bluecheese #salad #recipe

Why You’ll Love This Recipe:

My problem with most potato salads is that they are really heavy and can often be pretty bland. That’s not the case with this recipe. Thanks to a lighter dressing, chunks of blue cheese and bacon, and a sprinkle of fresh green onions, this is a potato salad recipe I can get behind.

Want to know how to make it? While it’s really easy, I’d be happy to walk you through the steps. Let’s get to it!

Bacon and Blue Cheese Potato Salad #potatosalad #sidedish #potato #bacon #bluecheese #salad #recipe

How to make this unique Potato Salad recipe

Begin by cooking your bacon. (Want to know my secret for cooking perfect bacon that results in less of a greasy mess? Check out this post here.)

Once your bacon is cooked and cooled, crumble and set aside. For your convenience, there is a full ingredient list and detailed instructions in the printable recipe card below.

While your bacon cooks, bring a large pot of water to a boil. Once boiling, add the potatoes and cook until tender. Depending on the size of your potatoes, this will take 15-20 minutes. Drain, cool, and cut your potatoes into 1-inch chunks.

To a large bowl add the potatoes, bacon, green onion, and blue cheese.

Bacon and Blue Cheese Potato Salad #potatosalad #sidedish #potato #bacon #bluecheese #salad #recipe

In a small bowl, whisk together the olive oil, white vinegar, sugar, black pepper, and salt. Drizzle this on top of your potato mixture. Toss with a large spoon or spatula to combine.

Bacon and Blue Cheese Potato Salad #potatosalad #sidedish #potato #bacon #bluecheese #salad #recipe

Chill for at least 1-2 hours before serving. And for those that are wondering … yes, this can be made 24-hours in advance and chilled in an airtight container.

Bacon and Blue Cheese Potato Salad #potatosalad #sidedish #potato #bacon #bluecheese #salad #recipe

As you can see, this Bacon and Blue Cheese Potato Salad is so easy to make. I also love that you don’t have to peel the potatoes. Not only does it save time, but I think it adds such a nice color, texture, and flavor.

Valentine's Day Snack Ideas #valentinesday #valentine #treat #snack #dessert #decor #entertaining #barcart #snackcuterie

Valentine’s Day is a fun day to celebrate the ones you love. In this post, I’m sharing two creative, beautiful, and delicious Valentine’s Day snack ideas. One is a Valentine’s Day Bar Cart and the other is a Valentine’s Day Snackcuterie Board. Either snack idea will be a festive way to enjoy and celebrate the day.

Valentine's Day Snack Ideas #valentinesday #valentine #treat #snack #dessert #decor #entertaining #barcart #snackcuterie

Valentine’s Day Snack Ideas

I don’t know about you, but Valentine’s Day always seems to sneak up on me. That’s why this year I’ve planned ahead and created two unique, colorful, and tasty displays of Valentine’s Day snacks to celebrate this love-filled day.

I’m so thrilled to share what I have created and in addition, give you a few tips for setting up something similar. Don’t celebrate Valentine’s Day? Don’t worry! These ideas and tips can be used to create a visually-beautiful food display for virtually any holiday or celebration.

Here’s a look at what I created.

Valentine's Day Snack Ideas #valentinesday #valentine #treat #snack #dessert #decor #entertaining #barcart #snackcuterie

Valentine's Day Snack Ideas #valentinesday #valentine #treat #snack #dessert #decor #entertaining #barcart #snackcuterie

I couldn’t be more pleased with my valentine snack displays. I think they are so fun and festive. Curious about how they came together? Let me break it down for you and share some tips for creating a similar look in your own space.

Let’s start with my Valentine’s Day Snackcuterie Board!

Valentine’s Day Snack Board:

I’m sure you’ve heard of a charcuterie board. A snackcuterie is the same idea, but with snacks instead of meats. (If you like this idea, be sure to check out my coffee-inspired snackcuterie HERE.)

This idea is great for a small gathering or a small space.

Valentine's Day Snack Ideas #valentinesday #valentine #treat #snack #dessert #decor #entertaining #barcart #snackcuterie

Valentine's Day Snack Ideas #valentinesday #valentine #treat #snack #dessert #decor #entertaining #barcart #snackcuterie

I realize that many of you may not have the luxury of dedicating a large area for a sweet treat display for Valentine’s Day. Have no fear because you can recreate this look on any scale. Let me show you how I did it.

For this charcuterie-inspired display, I started with a large, round, wooden board. From there, I just filled it up with all of my sweet treats. As you can see, I put some of the treats in bowls and dishes, and others I set directly onto the board.

Valentine's Day Snack Ideas #valentinesday #valentine #treat #snack #dessert #decor #entertaining #barcart #snackcuterie

Valentine's Day Snack Ideas #valentinesday #valentine #treat #snack #dessert #decor #entertaining #barcart #snackcuterie

I also included a few decorations. I used a small vase of flowers (that follow my color scheme) for a little height as well as one of my cookie cutter decorations.

Valentine’s Day Snack Bar Cart:

For my next idea, I cleared off my bar cart and restyled it to create this tasty display.

Valentine's Day Snack Ideas #valentinesday #valentine #treat #snack #dessert #decor #entertaining #barcart #snackcuterie

To start, I gathered some supplies. Most of these items, including the snacks, were found at HomeGoods. (Curious about my bar cart, you can find that HERE.)

When I’m shopping for a display like this, I usually like to consider some sort of theme or color story. In this case, it was fairly simple as Valentine’s Day was my theme and I stuck to the traditional Valentine’s Day colors of red, pink, and white.

I like this idea because it not only helps to limit your scope when you are shopping (you can ignore anything that doesn’t fit your theme), but it also helps to create a cohesive look in the finished project.

Valentine's Day Snack Ideas #valentinesday #valentine #treat #snack #dessert #decor #entertaining #barcart #snackcuterie

Valentine's Day Snack Ideas #valentinesday #valentine #treat #snack #dessert #decor #entertaining #barcart #snackcuterie

With the bar cart cleared and all of my treats purchased, I started bringing everything together. I used a variety of white serving pieces including cake stands for cupcakes, bowls for candy, and a couple of pitchers for flower displays.

Valentine's Day Snack Ideas #valentinesday #valentine #treat #snack #dessert #decor #entertaining #barcart #snackcuterie

I love using white serveware for a couple of reasons. First, it’s pretty universal since white coordinates with any holiday or occasion. Second, I think that food looks best on white dishes. A simple white plate will let the food stand out.

With all of the treats in place, we’re ready to decorate!

Valentine's Day Snack Ideas #valentinesday #valentine #treat #snack #dessert #decor #entertaining #barcart #snackcuterie

In this type of display, you don’t need a lot of decorative items because your sweet treats act as the decorations. However, I still like to include a few fun pieces. Including some “conversation-heart” napkins, heart-shaped cookie cutters, and fresh flowers.

I decided to keep things pretty simple which is why I opted for store-bought treats and cupcakes that I picked up at a local bakery. If you have more time, enjoy baking, or want strictly homemade treats, that is fine too. Do what works for you!

Homemade Valentine’s Day Snack Ideas:

It’s a clever, delicious, and creative way to celebrate the holiday at home. You’ve got this!

Buying a House with IBC: My Wish List

Do you have a bookcase or shelving unit in your home that just never seems to look “right”? Well, you’re in luck today because I’m walking you through my no-fail tips for styling a bookcase. Through this process, I’m also going to show you how I decorated one of my bookcases.

No-Fail Tips for Styling a Bookcase

No-Fail Tips for Styling a Bookcase:

I do follow a few “rules” when it comes to getting the look I want in a bookcase/shelving unit. Here are the elements I keep in mind: function, color, shape, texture, spacing, botanical, bling, and personal.

I know this may seem like a lot, but each aspect is important. Once I explain things a bit, I’m sure it will make sense. I’ve snapped some pictures of a bookcase in my apartment to walk you through the process. Let’s do this!

My Go-To Styling Tips:

Function – Decide what you need your shelving to do.

I wanted to use this bookcase for storing books and miscellany. It’s close to my kitchen so it needs to double as a wine rack. My overall goal is to balance storage and décor.

No-Fail Tips for Styling a Bookcase

Color – Stay within your color palette.

Here I used greens, teals, and blues. These are the colors I have in the rest of the room. I pulled in neutrals as well (black, white, and wood) because they coordinate with details in the space.

No-Fail Tips for Styling a Bookcase

Shape – Use a variety of shapes to create balance and interest.

A bookcase full of square items is probably going to be a bit boring. To break up the sharp lines of my bookcase, I added elements with different shapes – my bunch of grapes, tree sculpture, and round pots and vases. This keeps things interesting!

No-Fail Tips for Styling a Bookcase

Texture / Pattern – Bring in multiple ones to enhance visual appeal

Things like plants, baskets, and wood are great for adding texture. Incorporate them throughout your bookcase to create different surfaces.

No-Fail Tips for Styling a Bookcase

Spacing – Leave some empty space.

It’s the difference between collected and cluttered. Allowing room between the items is better than cramming in too much. When a piece can breathe, it can stand out.

No-Fail Tips for Styling a Bookcase

Botanical – Include flowers and plants to complete a space.

If you ever look at a shelving unit and think it’s missing something try adding a plant or fresh cut flowers. A botanical element is a natural way to finish off any space.

No-Fail Tips for Styling a Bookcase

Bling – Add something that sparkles – glass, metallic, mirrors, crystals, etc.

Finally, every space needs a little bling. Add something metallic or another item that reflects light (like my vintage bunch of grapes). Touches like these will instantly give your bookcase life and movement.

No-Fail Tips for Styling a Bookcase

And voila! Your bookcase went from drab to fab in seven simple steps! I hope these ideas are helpful.

No-Fail Tips for Styling a Bookcase

As always, Happy Decorating!
