A New Spot for the TV

House Tour, Interiors

Howdy there, folks! You may remember that in my last living room / office update I talked about some more furniture additions and changes I wanted to make. Well, on the coffee table front, I think I’ve found something suitable. I haven’t made the purchase yet, but when I do, I’ll be sure to tell you more.

I did, however, do a TV stand swap. Just in case you forgot what my old TV stand looked like, here’s a reminder.

And now, the new one.

This is the 48″ Clapboard Console from Crate and Barrel, and I honestly couldn’t be more pleased with it. As much as I love my black antique wood cabinet, it just wasn’t right for the space.

Plus, after getting my couch, I realized the black cabinet was a tad small. In looking for a new stand, I knew that I wanted something clean and modern. Given the other furnishings in the room, I was leaning toward something white with wood accents.

Originally, I was considering these three stands (one, two, three). I love their Scandinavian / mid-century modern style. One of the reasons I didn’t choose any of these pieces is because all of them had solid doors. I didn’t want to keep a door hanging open every time I watch TV or listen to music so that the remote would work. With my stand, there are slats to allow remote control signals to easily pass through. (Remotes may have worked on the other cabinets, but I didn’t want to risk it.)

The final selling point was the cost. First, the stand I just bought is on sale through the end of this month. Second, when I purchased my other CB2 items for the space, I used my Crate and Barrel credit card. By doing this (and paying it off immediately), I earned over $300 in rewards! Pretty sweet, right? So, my grand total (with shipping and tax) was around $200. Not too shabby.

I did have to assemble the piece, but it was pretty simple and straight forward. Overall, I’m super pleased with the piece. The dimensions are perfect and it definitely suits the style of the room. My only (minor) gripe is the color. And honestly, I kind of expected this when I ordered it. The molding in my house and some of the other furniture pieces in this space are a pure white. Like, wonderfully clean, bright white. Love it. This piece, though, is slightly off white. It’s really not a big deal, and I’m not sure if you can tell from the photos, but I notice it and it bothers me somewhat. I know. I’m weird.

Other than that, I’m so pleased.

I’m also excited (and a little stressed) about coming up with some sort of art for the wall behind the TV. Because of all of the windows and doors in this space, I don’t have an abundance of wall space, so I’m glad I was able to reclaim a bit of it. I have a few ideas, but nothing that’s jumping out as the clear winner. Any suggestions?

Well, I’m off to bake something wonderful in the kitchen. It’s still pretty cold here, so any excuse to turn on the oven and bake something sweet and delicious is a win in my book.

Hi Michael! I noticed your cat friend there. Do you have any post about your pet spaces? I always like to hear about the creatures people live with. 🙂

I too love the rug!!! I am in Australia so may not find one here but would love to know where it’s from.

      Thanks! It’s from CB2.com

i love the rug!.. where is it from?

Love the look of the new cabinet! The stained legs are a great contrast and, as much as I love mixing styles – antique w/ vintage, the cabinet seemed too different to work. Loving the entire space!

I luhuhuhuv it! I recently discovered this fabulous blog and it just makes me a little sad that it’s been missing from my life until now. I ADORE this room and if you ever need someone to come and stare and drool, I’m your girl. (You don’t have to thank me, it’s my pleasure)

Awww. You’re about the sweetest thing ever. I’m equally as happy that you found my little spot on the internet! Thank you so much for all of your kind words. 🙂

You need a grouping of smaller item/pictures not as tall but slightly wider than your TV. Still love the rug!

Thanks Leslie. I love this idea the most, but I have an existing gallery wall right outside the door of this room. I’m thinking it could be too much. Eek!

I love it! Can’t get any better than wood tones with white. Mmm mmm mmm! Also- maybe it’s just late and I’m missing a few neurons but I don’t see the “before” tv table…. maybe in the armoire? Help a sister out.

    • Michael Wurm, Jr. at

Yep! That’s it. I should have explained that better. Oops! The black armoire housed a smaller TV. Sorry about that! 🙂

I like the idea of something with a little texture and something that isn’t typical art. Good thought!

I have loved watching this space evolve – you have done an amazing job, Michael! And I love Crate & Barrel too – that piece is fantastic!

Looks great! For the wall above the TV, how about mounting the giant letter squiggle from upstairs, only horizontal this time around? Or you could create another gallery wall. At my house, there are always more pictures that need to be framed and put up!

By the way, I’m really enjoying your site. Discovered it through Young House Love (I adore them!) and now I’m a regular reader!

I love you space. Behind the TV, I would love something textural. If you found a smaller rug matching or coordinating with your fabulous large rug and hung it behind the tv, I think it could be wonderful. Everything looks perfect.

In my head I am going through each room in my house trying to figure out where this piece could go. I love it. Your living room is looking amazing. I have a hug crush on the rug, couch, and now the tv stand.

    • Michael Wurm, Jr. at

Haha. I’m sure it could work somewhere. It’s a great piece! Thanks for the living room love. 🙂
