Cherry Almond Oatmeal

When I’m trying to be more conscious of my breakfast decisions, I will take the time to make eggs or a bowl of oatmeal. I know that breakfast is important. Plus, to prevent myself from reaching for an unhealthy snack at 10 AM, a breakfast that fills me up is actually a smart idea. I usually stick with oatmeal because clean-up is easy, and I can get a little touch of sweetness if I want.

I’m sharing a delicious idea that will make you actually want to take a few minutes to prepare something yummy to start your day.

For this Cherry Almond Oatmeal, I looked to one of my favorite flavor combinations – cherry and almond. This past December, I told you how to make White Chocolate Cherry Almond Quick Bread. I’m not sure what it is about this combination, but my taste buds seem to enjoy it. That’s why I created this Cherry Almond Oatmeal.

To make things even better, this oatmeal combination is super simple. Like many people, I need to go easy in the morning at least until the coffee kicks in.

How to Make Cherry Almond Oatmeal:

First, I cooked my oatmeal. I did this in the microwave because it’s quick. In addition to the water, I used the smallest splash of almond extract to get that yummy almond flavor cooked right into my oats.

After that, I added a sprinkle of brown sugar. Since my breakfast of choice is leftover cake, I need a little sweetness in the morning.

To finish things off, I topped my cooked oats with sliced almonds and fresh cherries.

Not too bad, right? The only thing that takes a bit of time is slicing the cherries, but you could certainly do that the night before.

Although you probably won’t need a recipe to make this, (It is pretty basic.), I created one for you to have as a tickler, so you won’t forget about making this. Let’s take a peek.

See, pretty simple! I may just have to pass on the sweets for breakfast and stick to my Cherry Almond Oatmeal instead.

  1. I also got a good chuckle from the left-over cake comment, but that is a bit too sweet for me! I never thought to add almond extract. I will have to give it a try!

  2. Left-over cake. Ha! Good one.
But it’s really no different than coffee cake is it?
I’ve done almonds & brown sugar before but it never occurred to me to add cherries. And I love the idea of adding the extract. I bet dried cherries would work too. (Kinda like raisins.)
My mom used to use the cherry-almond scented Jergens lotion. So that scent reminds me of her. I want to try your recipe to see if I get the same reaction.
And because it just looks darn tasty!

  3. Had a chuckle at your breakfast of choice being leftover cake. My maternal grandmother was ALWAYS trying to give us cake and pie for breakfast. My mom would station herself in the kitchen to say no for us. A fun memory. Thanks for conjuring it!
