Surprise! My long anticipated deck is complete!

Here’s how it all came together.

On Tuesday my contractor called and said they had a break in their schedule and would be able to get things installed several days early. (Yay!!) Three guys worked until late afternoon yesterday (even during the few bursts of rain) to finish up the entire thing in one day.

As you can probably tell, I’m super pleased with the results.

Before I get in to more pictures, though, I have to apologize. Clearly my outdoors-in-the-afternoon photography skills are lacking. I should have taken these pictures on an overcast day or closer to sunset, so please bear with me. I’ll be more conscientious about this once I get the space styled.

Anyway, as I mentioned, I decided to contract this project out. After seeing the crew work, I realize it could have been a doable DIY. Nonetheless, I’m glad it’s complete and in just one day.

Here’s a quick look at the space before.

Let's Talk About Decks, Baby | Inspired by Charm

It was an awkward and mostly unusable space. The previous owners decided that blacktopping every grassy area was the way to go, (I don’t get it.) Unfortunately, it didn’t do much for the space aesthetically.

Now, with a uniform and thoughtful layout, it’s become a fully functional space that’s no longer an eyesore.

In terms of furniture and decor, I’m not sure what I’ll be doing. I updated my porch with some new furniture (more on that soon) so I was able to relocate an existing table and chairs to the deck. I also threw on a few potted flowers that I had for some snappy color. I might build wooden benches or look for something second hand. I do know that I probably won’t be investing a lot more dough this year. I want to see how the space functions. Then, maybe next spring or summer, I can look for something more fitting and permanent.

Obviously, the deck will need to be stained. (I’m still deciding on the color.) As I mentioned in another post, I want to make other tweaks to this area, including painting the shed doors black, updating the light fixture in between them, stringing up some patio lights, etc.

Regardless of what else I decide to do, I’m just so excited to have a deck. I’m even more excited about enjoying it this weekend. It’s the perfect place for grilling and sangria drinking.

That is a very good observation, and I think the key to why everything Michael does works so well: He really pays attention to who his house is.

I’d say you’ve got a winner there, Michael! Now I’m looking forward to seeing what color you stain the deck and how the doors look after they’re painted. You are going to start living on your new deck. . . you lucky duck!

Looks great! Vertical plantings on that new wall would be awesome! You do need some sort of covering from the heat. I can’t wait to see what else you do!

WOW!! That turned out great. They did a good job making it all level. I think that would have been the hard part. Looks great!! 🙂
