Ingredients

To create this Chicken Apple Sausage pasta, you’ll need a handful of ingredients. Here’s what to gather before we get started.

  • Olive Oil: A kitchen staple, olive oil is perfect for sautéing, adding a subtle richness and helping to brown the sausage beautifully.
  • Chicken Apple Sausage: The star of the dish, these sausages bring a delightful combination of savory chicken and sweet apple flavors, infusing the pasta with depth and character.
  • Onion: A foundation of flavor, onions caramelize slightly when cooked, adding a natural sweetness and aroma that’s essential to the dish.
  • Garlic: Garlic adds a pungent, earthy flavor, essential in creating a full-bodied and aromatic experience.
  • Granny Smith Apple: Known for its tartness, this apple adds a crisp, refreshing contrast to the creamy, savory elements of the pasta.
  • Chicken Broth: Acting as a cooking liquid, chicken broth enriches the pasta with a savory depth, enhancing the overall flavor profile.
  • Tomatoes with Green Chilies: These bring a zesty, slightly spicy kick, adding complexity and a bit of heat to balance the creamy sauce.
  • Heavy Cream: The cream transforms the sauce into a velvety, rich texture, making each bite indulgently smooth.
  • Pasta: Cellentani, or your pasta of choice, serves as the heart of the dish, perfectly absorbing all the flavors while offering a satisfying chew.
  • Salt and Pepper: Simple seasonings that are key in fine-tuning the dish to your taste, enhancing all the other flavors.
  • Monterey Jack Cheese: This cheese melts beautifully, adding a gooey, melty texture and a mild, buttery flavor that complements the sausage and pasta.
  • Green Onions: Used as a garnish, green onions add a fresh, crisp finish and a pop of color, making the dish as visually appealing as it is delicious.

Recipe Variations

  • Switch Up the Sausage: While chicken apple sausage is a fantastic choice, feel free to experiment with other types of sausage. Spicy chorizo can add a kick, while a sweet Italian sausage brings a classic flair. Vegetarian? No problem! There are amazing plant-based sausages out there that will fit right in.
  • Veggie Delight: Add more nutrition and color to your dish by throwing in some vegetables. Spinach, bell peppers, or mushrooms make great additions. They cook quickly and blend beautifully with the other flavors.
  • Pasta Picks: Cellentani pasta is my go-to, but don’t let that limit you. Penne, fusilli, or even spaghetti can change the texture and feel of the dish. If you’re looking for a healthier option, whole wheat or gluten-free pastas are great alternatives.
  • Cream Alternatives: For those who prefer a lighter version, swap out heavy cream with half-and-half or even a splash of milk. Want to go dairy-free? Coconut milk can be a great alternative, adding a slight sweetness and creamy texture.
  • Protein Power: Not a fan of sausage? Chicken, shrimp, or even tofu can be excellent substitutes. They all bring a different protein punch to the dish and can cater to various dietary preferences.
  • Herb Heaven: Fresh herbs can elevate this dish to new heights. Basil, thyme, or oregano added towards the end of cooking infuse the pasta with freshness and aroma.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a different type of pasta for this recipe?

Absolutely! While I used Cellentani pasta, feel free to use whatever you have on hand. Penne, fusilli, or even spaghetti can work well. Just keep an eye on the cooking time, as it varies with different pasta shapes.

Can I add more vegetables to this dish?

Of course! Vegetables like bell peppers, spinach, or mushrooms are great additions. They add color, texture, and extra nutrients to the meal.

For a creamier texture, you can increase the amount of heavy cream slightly or add a dollop of cream cheese or ricotta during the final few minutes of cooking. This will give the dish a richer, more luxurious sauce.

How can I store and reheat leftovers?

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days. To reheat, simply microwave or warm it in a skillet over medium heat. You might want to add a splash of broth or water to moisten the pasta while reheating.

What other proteins can I use instead of chicken apple sausage?

Chicken, shrimp, tofu, or even a different type of sausage like Italian or chorizo can be great substitutes. Each protein brings its own unique flavor to the dish.

  1. My family loves this. I omitted the apples because we are more savory than sweet and did cream of chicken soup for creaminess mostly because I didn’t have the cream. I served with broccoli & cauliflower on the side and fresh bread with apple butter. Also we had nice prosecco wine. My family which includes my picky child and 90 year old Mother said this was a keeper dinner, no complaints!

  2. I can’t believe I didn’t reply sooner as this has been a once a month recipe for the past three years! I use pepper jack cheese and celllentani pasta, otherwise I follow the recipe to a tee, it’s so tasty and my husband loves it too!

  3. This recipe is delicious! It has a great blend of flavors that all come together; sweet, mild spicy, and cheesy goodness! My boyfriend loved it and I passed it along to my family to try! Thank you for sharing this!
