If you can believe it, I finally chose the curtains for my master bedroom. And this pretty much sums up my feelings on making that decision …

Even though you probably already saw my decision in the feature image above, I thought we’d celebrate my choice with a song. All together now – “Because you know I’m all about that gray, ’bout that gray. No navy. I’m all about that gray, ’bout that gray. No navy. ”  Yes friends, gray was the winner. Well, sort of. (Oh, and if you don’t understand the above GIF and song, check out this video.)

Yes, I ultimately decided on the gray velvet curtains from West Elm. Based on your votes, however, gray was not the winner. On both Instagram and the blog, the blue chevron was the top choice. I totally get it. I loved those curtains and felt they really worked in the space. Then why didn’t I choose them? Let me explain.

First, the velvet curtains seem to be better quality. I think they will stand the test of time. Plus, they add a richness to the room. The blue chevron curtains were less expensive, but they were made from a thinner, possibly lower-quality fabric. Also, while I liked the pattern, I was concerned that I might quickly tire of it.

Secondly, based on my plans for the room, I felt the color and pattern of the blue curtains would fight with the rest of the design. I want to keep the space as peaceful as possible. With a neutral, solid curtain, I can have more fun with patterns when it comes to accessories, rugs, bed linens, etc.

Finally, I got a pretty sweet deal on these bad boys. Originally priced at $79 per panel, I got them on sale for $69 per panel. Plus, I had a 15% off coupon for my birthday month and $100 in Design Dollars for using my West Elm card. Total cost was $252 for all six panels for a total savings of almost 50%. Love that!

So what do you think?

If you’re still on the fence, hopefully as the room redesign progresses, the reasons for my choice will make sense.

I also wanted to point out that the rings and clips are temporary. I just wanted to get the curtains hung. Eventually I will sew some sort of ring to the back of each panel – similar to how my previous curtains where hung on this forged nail rod (which you can learn how to make here.) Once that is done, the curtains will hang much nicer as well.

I did give the panels a quick steaming with this Wrinkles-Away Steamer that I borrowed from my grandma. To my surprise, it worked very well despite its age. – I’m guessing it’s older than I am. Of course, many things were well-made back in the day. I was also super stoked to see that you can still buy the steamer on eBay. Ha! Take that expensive steamer systems. The curtains aren’t perfect because I have zero patience, but I felt the wrinkles needed some attention so folks don’t think I’m a total animal.

Oh, and while we are here, this is my closet with clothes in it. It’s working so nicely. I even have a little space to grow. I’m now on the hunt for new baskets for the top since these actually belong in my office.

Slowly but surely, these rooms are coming together. Next week, I might put together a mood board to share some of my ideas for decorating the space, Stay tuned.

The gray really pulls the room together. I like!

I voted for the navy, but I was basing that on the unfounded assumption that they were the focal point of the room. You’re right, the gray look fabulous, and will definitely allow you more creative freedom with other accessories! Very nice choice; they look.. well, choice!

    Cheers!

Yes! I voted for the grey and want them for my guest room re-do. Hope I get a good deal too:)

I was very against the gray when you did the voting and wasn’t sure at first when I started reading this post. However, somehow you’ve swayed me by the last picture. Either it does look great (and I do like it now, really!) or else I am very feeble-minded and easily convinced of things. ๐Ÿ™‚

Sue – aww! Thanks for your honesty! Glad you are grooving with the gray now. ๐Ÿ™‚

Love your choice! I did vote for grey! You will have more flexibility with down the road with pillows etc. ….sometimes less is best! Now you can pop a chevron pillow! Love it! ๐Ÿ™‚

YAY!!! I voted grey & it looks fabulous…even better with pics from around the room. Your window treatments in the room read more as an architectural element with these…and not a decor element.

I’ve got some amazing grey velvet 26″x26″ pillows in rotation, and I’m now inspired to bring those out and experiment with some of the elements/ideas you present. Thanks.

Two thumbs up gor the grey! In my opinion (and notwithstanding what a previous commentator wrote) the grey is a wonderful foil for the browns in your room , but what’s really stunning is that fabulous lampshade of royal blue juxtaposed with the velvety grey curtain – awesome! BTW I too am a long-time fan of Sarah Richards (and I’ll bet she would have voted for the grey as well).

  • Mimi Blue at

Oops – make that Sarah Richardson!

The gray is perfect. Your colorful shirts look very eye catching. They wouldn’t go as well with the blue chevron. Nope, the gray is perfect.

I absolutely love this! Where did you find the wood blinds? I’ve been looking everywhere for a pair that color
