Buffalo and Blue Cheese Lil Smokies:

I would be lying if I told you I love watching the Superbowl. Sports have never been my thing. However, I am actually a fan of Superbowl Sunday. Growing up, my aunt would host a big party. Nowadays, my brother typically throws some sort of get-together.

Because of this, the Superbowl has always been an occasion to hang out with family and friends (some of whom I haven’t seen since the holidays). Plus, there is the added benefit of tons of delicious food including lil smokies!

What Are Lil Smokies?:

Over the years, I’ve come to love the game-day staples such as wings, potato chips, dips of every kind, and of course, Lit’l Smokies. To me, those bites of goodness are essential to complete the party food round-up. In the past, I’ve wrapped them in bacon and simmered them in a delicious sauce in a slow cooker, but this year I wanted to try something a little different.

So, I decided to combine them with two of my favorite things: buffalo sauce and blue cheese.

Delicious, right? I told you!

Okay, now I’m warning you. This is where things are going to get a little weird. A really good weird, though. Remember how our parents told us not to play with our food? Well, today I’m throwing that advice right out of the window.

As you probably figured out, I don’t actually watch the Superbowl, except for the halftime show. (And the commercials, you gotta love the commercials!) Anyway, this year Bruno Mars and the Red Hot Chili Peppers will be taking the stage (a far cry from last year’s Beyonce, but I’ll take it).

Over in my humble kitchen, however, IBC and the Lit’l Smokies will be taking the stage.

Yes, I created this adorable mini-band out of Lil Smokies and crescent rolls.

I’m all about the finishing details when it comes to entertaining and I’m pretty sure my little edible band will make quite the impression. What do you think?

As you can see, I made a tiny microphone out of sliced carrots and toothpicks. I even crafted a guitar. Plus, some paper straws, bakers twine, and washi tape make a banner for the stage. Too cute, right? I should point out that one of the band members is none other than Jabba the Hutt. He plays a mean guitar.

It’s all about the presentation, isn’t it?

Ingredients

  • 1 package Hillshire Farm Lil Smokies
  • 1 can (8 ounces) crescent rolls
  • 1/2 cup blue cheese crumbles

Buffalo Dipping Sauce

  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 6 tablespoons buffalo wing sauce
  • 4 tablespoons blue cheese crumbles

Instructions

  • Begin by preheating your oven to 350 degrees F.
  • Open the can of crescent rolls. Using the perforations on the dough, divide into 8 triangles. Cut each triangle, lengthwise, into three pieces.
  • On the larger end of the triangle place a Lil Smokie and add a little of the blue cheese crumbles to either side. Carefully roll up the dough around the Lit'l Smokie and the blue cheese crumbles. Then, place them on a cookie sheet about 1 inch apart.
  • Bake 15 -18 minutes until golden brown.
  • For the Buffalo Dipping Sauce, combine all ingredients in a medium sized bowl. Whisk until smooth and well blended.

  1. Very delicious but my only comment is that the amount of sauce was out of proportion to the number of piggies. Way too much sauce left over after they all disappeared. I would halve the sauce ingredients even if you double the recipie.

  2. Great recipe! You can never go wrong with beef Lil’ smokies! I made this recipe for today, Superbowl Sunday, and once my ‘mature’ group of friends had completed the drinking game Edward Forty Hands, they didn’t last long! The next time I make these, I will either cook them a few minutes longer, they could have been a bit more crispy and the sauce while completely delicious separated as the afternoon went on. Maybe an immersion blender or an electric beater would help next time. Overall, big hit and super easy!

  3. Wow. Just wow. I am blown away. I may not be a “hot dog person,” but goodness gracious, now I’m hungry. AND impressed!!! Michael, it was so delightful to meet you at Alt – how cool is Garance Dore?!?! – and I will look forward to staying in virtual touch!

  4. Michael, I just discovered your blog through a friend, and I have to say, this space is gorgeous!

I love your little sausage band (did that come out right?) and I’ll definitely be following you from now on.

  5. I would definitely not be able to have those too close at hand . . . I can see them disappearing in a matter of seconds! My husband is from Buffalo, so we’re all about the sauce-and-blue-cheese combo ’round these parts. I’m also not a sports fan, but I’ll take any occasion to hang with friends and indulge in delicious snacks! 🙂

    1. Oh my goodness. It was so challenging to make these and not nibble on every one … or dunk my whole face into the buffalo dipping sauce.

      xo Michael

  6. You crack me up with your “Lit’l Smokies Band”! I have been trying to come up with something new and different to take to a Superbowl party and I’ve just found it! This looks delicious! Thanks so much….now, off to the store to get the ingredients.
