Sitting at my makeshift desk, I took this photo with my cell phone at about 4:30pm today.

As you can tell, there is a lot going on around here. A package delivered today still sits in the entryway where it immediately became a catch-all for paint samples. My dining room table is full of random remnants of a post I worked on all day yesterday (coming soon) and stuff I quickly shot pictures of this afternoon before the sun went down. (Are these shorter days getting on anyone else’s nerves?) A bag of garbage (It may or may not contain a pizza box.) is just chillin’ out with the vacuum. I guess I’m just keepin’ it real today and showing you that things aren’t always picture perfect around here.

But now on to some pretty things. Here is what ‘s happening around IBC Headquarters.

You may have noticed in the picture above that one of the walls in my office has a new color. As I mentioned previously, it’s Lighter Mint from Sherwin-Williams. I’m really loving this color.

There is a part of me, however, that may be a teeny-tiny bit nervous about it. Nonetheless, I’m not passing judgment until everything is painted and I start pulling the furniture and accessories together.

Just this afternoon I started painting the wall above the fireplace with this cheerful color. It is Larchmere from Sherwin-Williams. Again, this is a strong color and it instantly makes me happy when I walk into the space. It’s just so unexpectedly wonderful. I’m excited to see this room coming to life.

In other news, I took a tiny break from work and painting to hit up my local resale shop and one of my favorite antique shops. I was so glad I did!

At the antique shop, I found a pair of brass birds. They immediately reminded me of this pair. At half the price ($7 a piece) I scooped them up. I think they will be fun on a mantle or side table.

I also bought this large glass jug. About a month ago, Melissa of The Inspired Room created a lamp out of a jug. I’m hoping to do the same thing. I think the slight blue / green color of the glass will match my office perfectly. It was a steal at $25.

I also fell in love with the color and shape of this glass bowl. It was $12. Once my office takes shape, I hope to put together a little collection of colored glass. This piece will be a great start to this new collection. Oh, and the candle in the picture behind the bowl is from Anthropologie. I’m literally obsessed with the scent which is Tobacco Almond. I know that sounds really strange, but I can’t get enough of it. Plus the jar is super adorable.

After that I headed over to the resale shop and almost peed my pants. First, a little backstory. About two years ago I saw a similar set of these plates / mugs at Goodwill and couldn’t decide if I wanted them. I ended up passing on them. About two weeks later, an issue of Country Living arrived and these exact plates were featured in the magazine. They were valued around $40 per set. With the hope they’d still be at Goodwill, I crossed my fingers, dropped everything, and drove there. Sadly, they were gone.

I was elated when I saw a set of six of the very same plates and mugs at the resale shop today. (And I cannot for the life of me think of what this style of dish is called. If anyone knows, please leave a note in the comments.) They are called Candlewick Luncheon Plates. To top it all off, this shop was having a 50% off sale on all plates. I walked out of there with the six plates for $5. Get. out. of. town! Patience pays off I suppose. I think these are going to be amazing for holiday entertaining. From cookies and milk to veggies and dip – these will certainly come in handy.

And last, but not least, I’m taking part in my first Google+ Hangout tomorrow. The amazing folks at RedEnvelope asked me to join them for this fun event as they relaunch their signature red gift box. Several other style inluencers will join me. We will be talking gifts, style, and the joy around giving and receiving the perfect gift. You can read more about it here or join the event here. The fun starts tomorrow, October 18, at 1pm EST. Hope to see you there!

That’s it for me today. I’m going to go clean up this mess I made and maybe get another coat of paint on my fireplace wall.

I love both colors. They remind me of the beach. Soothing. I can practically feel the breeze and smell the salt water. And, I love your 2nd hand finds, especially the plates. Score!

    • Michael Wurm, Jr. at

Thanks! Yes, the colors would work great for a beach-inspired look!

My Mom had 36 of these exact snack sets. Growing up she used them for baby and wedding showers. When she passed away, 9 years ago, my sister and I donated them to her church.

    • Michael Wurm, Jr. at

Wow! What a fabulous collection. I’m sure the church really appreciated that donation!

They’re luncheon plates! My great grandma had that exact set. My favorite part is the little dip on the corner which is where you were to place your cigarette. LOL

    • Michael Wurm, Jr. at

Thanks for the tip! I used that to search eBay and found them!! Thank you! And I did investigate the plates and totally see the cigarette holder. How times have changed!

Hi Michael. Wow your headquarters looks like my headquarters right now. LOL I am in the middle of painting and I have stuff everywhere (I am getting sick of the mess though). Love the jug you found. I just made a lamp out of a glass bottle I just found too and it was a fun project. Can’t wait to see how your new space turns out.

I hear you Kristi. I’m totally sick of the mess too. I still have painting to do, but I plan on cleaning things up around here ASAP.

Love your new colors and I chuckled with delight when I saw your plates. They are depression glass luncheon plate sets. I snapped up 24 of them in perfect condition about 5 years ago at Goodwill for $0.25 each. Did you notice the ashtray on one end of the plate? I don’t remember all the details, but I believe they were made by Anchor Hocking in the 1930’s. I will try to find my info on them, but you might try searching Anchor Hocking luncheon sets. I use mine constantly, not just for entertaining, but even to just sit down with a sandwich at lunch by myself. They just make me happy! I hope you enjoy yours as much as I do mine, Michael. Good find!

Thanks for all of the information Kris! So super helpful. I was able to find some more information on them. They are fabulous!

Ashtray is next to the cup holder with cigarette rest on plate rim. You can clearly see it in your photo!

    Good morning Michael
I love your paint colors and my jaw dropped when I saw the two brass birds you found at an antique shop because my parents had those same two birds when I was growing up! Now I want to check with them to see if they still have them somewhere and ask if I can have them! I can’t believe it! I would love to get them and put them on my mantel and tell everyone to look at your website because you have the same ones! So excited and really hope my parents still have those birdies! I think my mom may have gotten them at a Home Interiors party years ago. I will have to ask.
Thanks for all the great posts. I absolutely adore you and your blog!
Have a wonderful day and weekend!
    Lisa

Aren’t those birds great!? How fun that our parents decor is sort of back in fashion. But then again, I guess some things never really go out of style. Thank you so much for your kind comments and sweet words.

LOVE your finds! The candlewick luncheon plates are to die for! Good for you!

Love that paint color and cannot wait to see your finished room.

And PS – Eureka owes you a commission because after seeing yours I am going to go check it out. Better than Dyson? I hope so! xo

    • Michael Wurm, Jr. at

Haha. Thanks so much. I’m actually in the market for a new vacuum and I’m actually looking at a Dyson, so that was not a product placement. Haha! Glad you are loving the colors! I am too!

Thanks for sharing your mess! ๐Ÿ™‚ Now I know I’m not alone!

Love the paint colors. I’m planning to start painting our sun porch today and the color is similar to your fireplace wall. I’m excited!

Love those plates too…I think my grandparents have those. Maybe I should put my name on them! ๐Ÿ˜‰

    • Michael Wurm, Jr. at

Haha. You’re definitely not alone. If you could only see the rest of the space. Good luck with your painting progress!

I love the paint colors. I can’t wait to see the finished product! Since following you I have had more fun decorating than ever! I gave up on trying to find things that were “matching” and started picking up things that are fun and true to me. I was recently given my grandmothers rolling pin. I feel like SpongeBob with Neptunes golden spatula (lame reference, I know, but my tv was high jacked years ago). Anyway, I am on a mission to find a way to display it. I always come to IBC before going treasure hunting or starting a project for my inspiration. Love your work!

    • Michael Wurm, Jr. at

This is so awesome Terri! I can’t tell you how much I appreciate this comment! I totally agree too. You have to pick up the things you love. Because if you love it – you’ll find a place for it in your home. Thanks!

I love your wall colors! Your gold accessories will look great against them. It seems that shades of white and gray for walls is trendy right now, but I see those rooms and crave color. My last house had purple walls (think Monica’s apartment in Friends) and I was so in love with them. Now I have yellow walls in my great room with one royal blue accent wall. I say if color makes you happy, go for it! I can’t wait to see your finished room.

    • Michael Wurm, Jr. at

Carrie, I agree. I love white / gray walls for their versatility, but a splash of color is always welcome. I’m glad I took the risk here. I can’t wait to finish this space to. I feel like it will never be done though! Haha.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: those new office colours are knockout out. SO good.

P.S. You should see my apartment at the moment. Hot mess about covers it! ๐Ÿ˜‰

Have a good weekend and hope you manage to get some you time. I just went to see the movie Captain Phillips – well worth a watch if you have the chance!

    • Michael Wurm, Jr. at

Thanks a million Will! I’m pretty excited about the transformation too. I just can’t wait to have it FINISHED! Captain Phillips? Never heard of it. Off to google the trailer! Thank you again.
